Mining companies in communities without other large employers often encounter dependent or defiant stakeholder attitudes, sometimes simultaneously. Less often they also see some slip into social dissipation or advance towards sustainable development. This paper presents a four-quadrant framework that shows how patterns of social capital foster these four reactions. The two dimensions defining the quadrants are the social capital levels (a) between the company and each stakeholder, and (b) among stakeholders themselves. Examples from the Antamina mine in Peru illustrate a social capital measurement system that can predict these reactions and help the community chart its path towards sustainable development.

Recently, micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their numerous advantages over larger tubular and planar SOFCs. These include excellent thermal shock properties giving rapid startup/shutdown capability, a high volumetric power density compared to larger tubular SOFCs, and reduced sealing problem compared to planar SOFCs. In order to screen cathode materials for micro-tubular SOFCs, the perovskite cathodes were deposited, using a variety of methods, on 10.5 mol % yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) tubes. Their electrochemical properties were then evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods, based on a three electrode configuration, and with the reference electrode position carefully optimized. The oxygen reduction reaction kinetics at the cathode/electrolyte half cell were then investigated in detail.

Further increase in gas turbine engine temperature necessitates continuous development and advancement to thermal barrier coatings. While tremendous effort has been devoted to developing new thermal barrier coating materials and processing methods in order to decrease the thermal conductivity, limited attention has been paid to radiative thermal transport through coatings. It is the purpose of this study to develop a new layered coating structure that can be used to effectively reduce the both radiative thermal transport as well as thermal conductivity, and to demonstrate the mechanism and effectiveness of the proposed multilayered structure. Mathematical modeling based on the multilayer quarterwave stack and simulation results are presented.

Australia has a number of uranium deposits, but they vary significantly in their mineralogy, grade and textural characteristics. Therefore, information from traditional (or conventional) sources regarding the fundamentals of leaching the uranium and gangue minerals is not always applicable when studying particular ores. Empirical studies on particular ores can be effective in understanding leach systems and can lead to improvements in process design, but there remains a lack of fundamental understanding which is necessary for ongoing process optimisation as ore bodies continue to vary. ANSTO Minerals has undertaken a program of work to address some of the fundamental questions of uranium leaching, including the unexpected impact for some ore types of leaching at high oxidation potential.

As a consequence, technology providers tend to focus on automating repetition and complexity, resulting in software that improves individual productivity while failing to address the interdependency of mining functions. For this reason, technology vendors like Gemcom are following partnership approaches with their clients, engaging corporate and operational stakeholders to better understand mining business objectives. This presentation examines some of the approaches that help foster the development of solutions that leverage the information produced during mine operations to improve downstream process control and tactical decision support.

Often, properties exhibit a composite of these categories.The most problematic to value are properties or deposits that are not economically exploitable at the time of the valuation due to a lack of exploration, insufficient grade or tonnage, poor mining conditions, or the imposition of socio-economic, environmental, or legal constraints.Various acceptable methods of valuing the range of all such mineral properties or deposits are reviewed. We report rare earth element (REE) recovery using immobilized Serratia biofilm depositing metal phosphate via a robust enzymatic mechanism. Activity was approximately halved at pH 3.5 and restored at pH 5.5. REE(III) was recovered selectively against Th(IV) but the method was non-selective between different REEs (La, Y, Eu, Nd). Biofilms were active for a year (half life of ~ 3 months). The activity of aged biofilm was enhanced by pre-nucleation (‘priming’) with NdPO4 prior to onset of flow-through conditions. The use of different ‘priming’ metals and bacteria via a combinatorial approach revealed some REE selectivity through the selective exclusion of specific REEs.

Development of new SF6 alternative cover gas with low global warming potential is strongly desired for melting and casting of magnesium alloys. We have tried to apply several kinds of HFC and HFE gases with low potential from 30 to 950 as protection gases to AZ91D alloy melt in the temperature range of 650 to 800°C. As a result, protective film consisted of MgF2 and MgO is formed on the melt surface and ignition-proof effect is sufficiently obtained at all the temperature ranges even when flow rates of mixed gases containing CO2 as a carrier gas are almost the same as those using SF6 gas. Reduction of global warming potential exceeds 98% at 650°C and 89% at 800°C in comparison with a mixed gas of CO2 and SF6.

Duckbill mining is probably the simplest method of loading coal mechanically at the face in underground mines. It is a means of reducing the amount of physical labour required to produce a ton of coal. In effect, it is merely shaker conveyor mining brought up to date with the addition of a self-loading head or 'duckbill' on the end of the conveyor line. Any mechanical device used to load coal is a means of supplanting the human muscles as the medium for getting the coal off the floor into the transportation equipment. There can be no argument with the conclusion that a man can lift so much and no more. He can load more tons of coal on a low conveyor, because the lift is less, than he can in a pit car two, three, or even four feet high. Thus it follows that, if the lifting operation is entirely eliminated, the man should be able to produce even more coal. A mechanical operation is essentially a multiplication of physical strength. Although there are various ways in which coal can be loaded at the face by mechanical means, there is, perhaps, none more adaptable than shakers equipped with duckbills. This is particularly true for thin seams and in mines having heavy, tender top conditions which require close timbering. However, as we are discussing duckbill mining, we will make no further reference to any other type of equipment. The first, and to date the only, mine in eastern Canada to adopt a system of mechanical loading at the face is the Franklin mine of the Bras d'Or Coal Company, Ltd., at Bras d'Or, N.S. An experimental Goodman shaker conveyor with a self-loading head, or duckbill, was installed in this mine in 1940. Since that time other units have been placed in operation so that, today, this mine is completely mechanized. The method of operation 1s room-and-pillar. The operation is carried on in a 42-in. seam, which lies 420 feet beneath the Sydney Main or Harbour seam in the Sydney Mines basin. The slopes bear N.25 30'E., dip 10 per cent seaward, and are about 6,000 feet in length. The physical conditions of this seam do not make it particularly adaptable for complete mechanization as it contains a large amount of foreign material, such as clay intrusions or wash-outs and iron pyrites. These clay intrusions, known locally as 'troubles', vary in thickness from a few inches to as thick as eighteen feet and usually replace the coal to the full height of the seam.

"This paper discusses the author’s work on international law norms of consultation with Indigenous communities and examines unexpected corporate stakeholder impacts on these norms. Customary international law, which governs the area, does not traditionally refer to corporate conduct. This paper surveys several sources on developing international law on consultation obligations; it also discusses the impacts these norms can have on corporate stakeholders in the mining industry. Finally, it asks how interactions of corporate stakeholders in this area can indirectly impact future law and suggests implications for different business models in the mining sector.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article traite du travail de l’auteur sur les normes de consultation avec les communautés autochtones contenues dans le droit international et examine les impacts inattendus des parties prenantes sur ces normes. Le droit coutumier international, qui gouverne ce domaine, ne réfère traditionnellement pas à la conduite des sociétés. L’article analyse plusieurs sources traitant du développement de nouvelles lois internationales sur l’obligation de consulter; il traite aussi des impacts que ces normes peuvent avoir sur les parties prenantes dans l’industrie minière. "As part of a larger investigation on generation of fines from mining activities and their effect on downstream operations, ore samples from Onaping area stockpiles of Falconbridge Ltd were studied. Batch flotation tests were conducted on the stockpile samples and fresh ore samples to explore the effect of stockpiling on grade-recovery performance. Head grade and particle size distribution of the samples from stockpiles were adjusted so that the samples compared are similar to each other. In additional tests, fresh ore samples were blended with stockpile samples at various percentages, representing 27.4, 50.2 and 81.5% of stockpile samples.The samples from stockpiles produced inferior nickel grade-recovery curves compared to fresh ore. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, while pyrrhotite from stockpiled ore became highly floatable, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite.In the case of blending, there was generally insignificant difference in the nickel grade-recovery between fresh and blended samples when the blending cases involved 27.4 and 50.2% stockpile samples. However, an increase in pyrrhotite recovery was observed for both blending cases. At 81.5% blending case, degraded grade-recovery was significant primarily due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. There was a small, but noticeable amount of nickel loss for this case. However, for lower ratios of blending this loss was negligible.The increase in pyrrhotite recovery was partly attributed to its activation by Cu and Ni ions. Formation of a significant amount of elemental sulphur was also apparent from analysis of stockpiled samples. It can be concluded that pyrrhotite is mildly oxidized under stockpiling conditions while part of the pentlandite undergoes a more severe oxidation."

The research and characterisation for compositional, physicochemical, structural, electrical and flotation properties of various pyrite samples for a copper-zinc sulfide ore was carried out. Various methods were used during the research, such as optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), phase emission analysis, routine chemical analysis, auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), back-scattered electron images (BSE), potentiometry, and instrumental neutron-activation analysis, flotation. Analysis of obtained results established the interrelation between impurity structures and concentration of electric charge carriers in minerals, Butyl xanthate sorption and flotation yield of pyrite. The research concluded that pyrite samples differ by morphology, micro defects of structure, concentration of donor and acceptor impurities (Co, As, Sb, etc.) and conductivity parameters (thermo-electrical force, specific resistance and concentration of charge carriers The peculiarity of pentagon-dodecahedral pyrite is the high concentration of electric charge carriers (electrons) and the more negative surface potential (by 25–75 mV) in comparison to cubic pyrite. The surface of cubic varieties is more active, therefore it is oxidized in alkaline lime medium much faster, than the surface of pentagon-dodecahedral varieties. This phenomenon is caused by high reaction ability, irregular jointing and defects of cubic pyrite. This promotes the increase of calcium ion sorption on its surface and the decrease of Butyl xanthate sorption. According to this, an increase in alkalinity (lime medium) from a pH of 10.0–11.5 leads to an increase of gold content reporting to the tail of bulk flotation. Gold content is increased from 0.58 g/t (?? 9.5) to 1.9 g/t (?? 11.6), which represents an increase in gold recovery of 24.68 to 79%, respectively.

Nevsun Resources Ltd. Bisha Mine Project is a gold and base metal development project in the Gash Barka region of west-central Eritrea. The project has the potential to be one of the largest industrial developments in the country, and Eritreans have no experience in modern mining. Nevsun recognized early that the success of the Bisha Project would require meaningful consultation and engagement with all levels of Eritrean society. Meaningful engagement required not only full disclosure, but also capacity building from government officials at all levels to other stakeholders who live in the nearby communities. This paper describes the approach used to develop capacity and to help introduce a modern mining culture in a country without previous experience in mining.

"The permeability and specific storage of rocks and sedimentary layers deep underground are critical parameters for issues related to the buried evaluation of natural gas and oil, CO2 aquifer storage, various kind of waste storage and so on.The Shirahama sandstone of the Wakayama prefecture, Kii peninsular in central Japan, consists mainly of quartz grains with no cracks and rock fragments that are aggregations of various kind of minerals. The quartz grains have an average size of about 150 micron. The pre-existing pore sizes were distributed dominantly at approximately 1 micron, and the total porosity was about 13%.During the hydrostatic compression test, we measured permeability of Shirahama sandstone by Transient Pulse test for three mutually perpendicular directions. Permeability of Shirahama sandstone remained fairly constant while increasing the effective confining pressure. Permeability anisotropy was observed slightly in the normal and two parallel directions to the bedding planes.We used micro focus X-ray CT with high resolution of 10 micron to visualize and measure the voids space information in Shirahama sandstone. Three-dimensional data were obtained in the intact and stressed sandstone simultaneously. Pore structures and grain boundaries were clearly distinguished. Pore closure and grain movement were clearly observed with increasing confining pressure. Micro focus X-ray CT is an effective tool to visualize and measure the geometrical information in rocks.Three-dimensional medial axis (3DMA) method was introduced to quantify the flow-relevant geometric properties of the voids structure in Shirahama sandstone using µfocus X-Ray CT data. The number of connecting path between two faces, tortuosity and the shortest path distribution within an arbitrary region of Shirahama sandstone specimen were analyzed. Geometrical information on the number of connecting path shows reasonable correlation between permeability anisotropy and mutually perpendicular directions normal and parallel to bedding planes. In addition, we introduced numerical simulation of fluid flow of pressurized Shirahama sandstone by LBM, to discuss the permeability change caused by pressurization on effective confining pressure. We obtained the detailed distributions of fluid pressure and fluid velocity in relatively narrow voids space more than 10 µm. It was confirmed that pressurization effect on permeability caused by the decrease of the connecting path and the shortest path between arbitrary faces, and then caused a complex condition on fluid pressure and fluid velocity."

The development of contact angles on highly polished ?uraninite surfaces, using sodium oleate and dodecyl ammonium acetate as collectors, has been studied at different collector and hydrogen ion concentrations. It was found that sodium oleate in acidic media (up to a neutral: PH) and dodecyl ammonium acetate in neutral and alkaline media give good contact angles. It appears that the combined forms of these collectors, viz., oleic acid and free amine, are more important in effecting contact. W ITH the emergence of uranium as a strategic metal in the last fifteen years, considerable effort has been directed toward the commercial recovery of uranium from its ores. This has resulted in the development of a uranium technology. It is only in recent years, However, that fundamental data regarding the floatability and surface properties of uraninite and ?pitchblende have been elucidated by different methods. "Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. Vale Inco?s Coleman Mine 153 Orebody is a narrow vein deposit with a dip that varies from 30 to 70 degrees. It has a strike length of 1200-feet and the current mining extends from the 4250 level to 5100 level. The primary mining method is mechanized cut-and-fill although drift-and-fill is also used in wider sections of the ore zone. The ore body is divided into six main mining horizons with an average of three mining blocks on each cut. There are some interesting rock mechanics challenges related to mining upward from the 4550 level and these challenges are increasing as the mining front progresses toward the 4400 level. The mining of the 4550 block is currently at cut 13 whereby the crown pillar thickness is approximately 60-feet. Significant factors including increased stress levels in the crown pillar, the change in the orebody dip at this level and a recently indentified geological structure in the footwall, have all combined to introduce seismic activity in the footwall of 4550 level. Closer studies revealed a consistent trend of seismicity that was further examined with core logging and Acoustic TeleViewer technology. The data from these assessment tools disclosed a geological structure that is influencing the mining environment. This paper reviews the seismic analysis for the 4550 level mining zone and the subsequent procedures used to locate the new geological structure. The paper also discusses the key mining practices used to successfully mine cut 13 of 4550 level and briefly reviews the studies that are underway to up-date the mine design for continued extraction of high-grade ore in a safe and productive manner.

"There are a number of nitrate-containing wastewater sources, as concentrated as 30 wt % NO3 and as large as 2000 m3/day, in the nuclear fuel cycle. The biological reduction of nitrate in waste water to gaseous nitrogen, accompanied by the oxidation of a nutrient carbon source to gaseous carbon dioxide, is an ecologically sound and cost-effective method of nitrate waste disposal. These nitrate-containing wastewater sources can be successfully biologically denitrified to meet discharge standards in the range of 10 to 20 g N(NO3-)/m3 by the use of a fluidized bed bioreactor. The denitrification bacteria are a mixed culture derived from garden soil; the major strain is Pseudomonas. In the fluidized-bed bioreactor, the bacteria are allowed to attach to 0.25- to 0.50-mm-diam. coal fluidization particles, which are then fluidized by the upward flow of influent wastewater. Maintaining the bacteria-to-coal weight ratio at approximately 1:10 results in a bioreactor bacteria loading of greater than 20,000 g/m3,This paper describes the results of a bio denitrification R&D program based on the use of fluidized bioreactors capable of operating at nitrate levels of up to 7000 g/m3 and achieving denitrification rates as high as 80 g N(N03-) per day per litre of empty bioreactor volume. IntroductionThe discharge of wastewater containing nitrate at concentrations greater than stipulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) creates an environmental hazard and constitutes a civil and/ or criminal legal liability.(I.2) At present, we have three options: (1) recycle and reuse of nitrate streams the total economic and technical balance should be Closely examined; (2) use of an alternative acid, which may pose an entirely different set of problems ; or (3) disposal of nonreusable nitrate sources by an environmentally acceptable procedure."
