The Brisco Barite Mine lies 70 km south-southeast of Golden, British Columbia. Barile mineralization occurs in a northstriking brecciation zone within Ordovician-Silurian Beaver/ oot dolomites and quartzites. Brecciation was caused by faulting related to the Mount Forster-Steamboat Fault. The main barite vein occupies a fault zone and is up to 12 m wide and over 250 m long. It is light grey to white, fine grained and compact; BaSO4 content is 9/. 70 per cent. Production started in 1945 and has continued to the present. Barile originally was removed from an open pit; later, an adit, begun in 1957, reached more than 240 m along the vein, 15 m below the pit floor. Today ore is hoisted from a decline resting some 37 m below the pit floor.

In the western part of the Chapais syncline (Abitibi-east, Quebec), the lava flows belonging to the Haliy Formation separate in two distinct sequences. The basal sequence contains prophyri tic metabasalts of calc-alkaline af f inity overlain by porphyritic metatrachyandesites and metatrachytes of alkaline to shoshonitic affinity. The upper sequence contains porphyritic metabasalts similar to those of the basal sequence along with highly potassic metaandesites trending to a subalkaline affinity. A geochemical study of trace and REE elements established that the composition of these lava flows results from a mixing or contamination process. The primitive tholeiitic liquids which are enriched in LREE were modified by the addition of a crustal contaminant enriched in Y, Zr, Th and K20. The magmatic liquids resulted from successive steps in the admixing process, evolved by fractionated crystallization. The mechanism of gradual admixing seems to be the major cause of the observed ea le-alkaline characteris ties and may also be the cause of the alkaline to shoshoni tic affinity in those lavas. The tendency to differentiation by fractional crystallization reveals the tholeiitic character of the primitive liquids.

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. La distribution chaotique des lithologies, la présence de brèches magmatiques, et la quasi-absence de litage rythmique suggèrent un environnement magmatique dynamique perturbé par l’introduction de nouveau magma. Au 31 décembre 2001, les ressources mesurées et indiquées s’élevaient à 159 millions de tonnes titrant 1,55 g/t Pd, 0,17 g/t Pt, 0,12 g/t Au, 0,05% Cu, et 0,05% Ni, pour une teneur de coupure de 0,7 g/t Pd. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. "Noranda's Brunswick Mining Division, near Bathurst, New Brunswick, processes 10,500 TPD of complex Cu-Pb-Zn bearing ore. Brunswick uses conventional rod and ball milling techniques to achieve a flotation feed size of 75% passing 400 mesh. Over a two year period, testwork was performed using a Marcy pilot plant ball mill to assess the impact of several key variables on secondary grinding efficiency. Four graded mill charges were used to compare balls and slugs at 25 and 29 mm sizes. Data was evaluated by determining grinding rates using a commercially available steady state simulator. Results were critical in Brunswick's efforts to achieve finer grinds while minimizing cost per tonne.IntroductionBackgroundThe Brunswick orebody is an extremely fined grained volcanogenic massive lead, zinc, copper, silver, iron sulphide body between two metamorphosed sedimentary and felsic volcanic rock units. Pyrite content is about 60% with 20% non-sulphide minerals, mainly silica and chlorite.Size reduction at Brunswick is performed by three separate parallel lines consisting of rod mills, primary and secondary ball mill circuits, all in series. The line 3 grinding circuit is presented in Figure 1."

"This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. From Quebec, the nickel concentrate is sent by rail to the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury and on the reverse rail haul, nickel matte from the smelter is sent to Norway via Quebec."

The CANMET Western Research Centre (CWRC) has developed a hydrocyclone model simulation of dewatering and fine particle separation circuits. The simulation is based on an existing empirical model. Utilizing a cyclone manufacturer’s published data, some modifications have been developed and integrated into the model. Feed stream characteristics, cyclone mechanical dimensions, and operating conditions are used in the CWRC modelling simulation. The computer results are presented in 3D graphs and corresponding 2D maps showing the cyclone mass recovery, percent solids by mass in underflow and overflow, and cut size as functions of the cyclone apex diameter and cyclone throughput (i.e., inlet pressure or pressure drop). Results of the computer simulation have been used in the economic feasibility and design of several dewatering circuits in oil sand plants.

The application of underground pre-concentration technology to narrow vein mining has the potential to change the entire economics of bulk mining methods when used in narrow vein situations. The rejection of waste at or near the face means that a higher-grade ore can be sent to surface. The waste rock can be reused directly as backfill. Swelling of the muck through blasting means that only 60 to 65% can be used as fill. Planning and scheduling of the fill usage is key to the success of this method. Through the use of simulation and system analysis, this paper examines the planning and scheduling implications of underground pre-concentration when applied to traditional narrow vein mining methods (cut-and-fill /drift-and-fill, longhole, AVOCA). It considers the logistical factors that represent potential system bottlenecks that are key to understanding the correct implementation and control strategies.

During the operation of a mineral processing plant, the unit processes are investigated by analyzing the data extracted by means of stream sampling. The data structure is identical to the time series form. Data analysis is a crucial step in understanding the plant performance. To control the plant performance efficiently, it is very important to avoid sampling errors, which is impossible. However, it is possible to minimize these errors. The factors influencing these errors are divided into two categories: material properties illustrating its heterogeneity, and sampler features. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of the material composition variation on sampling errors, and to compare our evaluation method with that of Gy. Note that the stream mass flowrate is assumed to be constant during the sampling process.

Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomical. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.
