Introduction The recent uranium discovery at Theano point, lake Superior, is probably a rediscovery of the first reported Canadian uranium occurrence. A description of material from the original discovery was published in 1847 by J. L. LeConte, and many attempts have been made to relocate the deposit. Such attempts have in the past been unsuccessful because of vagueness in the original description of the locality. Besides being a prospect that seems to merit development work, the Camray discovery is important because it reaffirms the occurrence of pitchblende in the eastern part of the Precambrian shield. Much staking followed the announcement of the discovery, and some additional finds have been reported. Location The Camray discovery is at the shore of Theano point, lake Superior, about seventy miles north of Sault Ste. Marie (see Figure 1). It is in township 29, range XIV, district of Algoma. The showing is two miles from Highway No. 17, and is reached by a rough trail that leaves the highway at mileage 72.9 from Sault Ste. Marie. There are no towns of any size nearer than Sault Ste. Marie.

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. "The asbestos orebody is contained within ultrabasic rocks of Precambrian age, being located in the continuous permafrost zone of the Quebec Ungava Peninsula, some 300 miles north of the tree line at approximate latitude 61'49' and longitude 73°58'.The asbestos deposit is at the western tip of a folded ultrabasic sill complex which trends northeast and covers an elliptical area 4.5 miles wide by 15 miles long. Locally. the asbestos occurs in. a completely serpentinized dunite rock. The principal rock types in the vicinity of the ore-body originally consisted of dunite, peridotite and pyroxenite, all of which have experienced at least two periods of alteration, so that no fresh rock now remains.The main ore zone in the open pit is approximately one quarter mile in length, 150 to 200 feet in width, and plunges at 25 to 30 degrees in a northeast direction below surface, to a vertical depth of at least 1,200 feet, Consider¬able tectonic activity resulted in favourable structural conditions which culminated in the formation of the ore zone in its present form.The deposit consists principally of cross-fibre ""gash type"" veins which vary in length from several inches to several feet. The principal fibre vein direction is parallel to the dip of the enclosing serpentinized dunite and sill complex.Some of the problems encountered during diamond drill¬ing in permafrost are briefly discussed."

"The Copper Canyon property is located in the Galore Creek area of northwestern British Columbia. Porphyry copper-gold mineralization on the property is notable for its high gold content and close spatial relationship with a distinctive suite of high level syenitic and monzonitic intrusions, and pseudoleucite-bearing volcanic country rocks. The style of alteration and mineralization is similar in many respects to the nearby Galore Creek deposits.The current geological resource of 32.4 million tonnes grading 0.75% Cu, 1.17 g/ t Au and 17.1 g/t Ag is insufficient to support a mining operation, but definition of additional reserves combined with improved transportation infrastructure in the region may change this in the future. The climate, topography and proximity to an active glacier indicate that the most likely production scenario is an underground bulk mining operation, with the ore being milled offsite.IntroductionThe property is located at 57°07' North latitude, 131 °21' West longitude, on NTS sheet 104G/ 3W, approximately 160 km northwest of Stewart and 90 km south of Telegraph Creek (Fig. 1). The Galore Creek camp and airstrip are located 6 km to the west. Current access to the property is via helicopter either from Galore Creek, or from the Bronson Creek airstrip 32 km to the south-southeast.The deposit occurs within the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains, on the north side of the east fork of Galore Creek, which flows northerly into the Scud River and thence westerly to the Stikine River.Topography is rugged. In the deposit area, elevations range from 1130 m to 1750 m. Valley glaciers and permanent snow and ice fields are characteristic of the region at these elevations, and at its southern limit, mineralization is truncated by the East Fork Glacier.The property is entirely above the treeline, and except for areas of moraine cover and talus slopes, outcrop is abundant."

"The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."

In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. The haulage cycle is the sequence which a haulage vehicle must first arrive at the loading area, then turn around and reverse into position. Once it is loaded, the vehicle leaves and travels to the unloading area, where again it must turn around and back up to unload. The cycle is repeated over and over again. The Vector Neutral truck is a rubbertired, self-propelled hauling vehicle designed such that it eliminates the requirement to turn around and back-up to either load or unload. Vector Neutral Truck Cycle: 1.) Travel from the load station to the dump station. 2.) Stop and dump load. 3.) Travel from the dump station to the load station. 4.) Stop and load. The Advantage is in the Difference: 1.) Shorter distance traveled. 2.) Fewer brake and steering actuations. 3.) Easier to automate. 4.) Easier to adapt for remote control operation.

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin. "This paper describes the design of an SABC grinding circuit using CEET technology applied to grindability data produced from testing 100 samples and distributed across the blocks of a mine plan using a geostatistical approach. The data distribution required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the 130 million ton Ruby Creek orebody together with a mine plan of about 11000 blocks to be mined during the proposed 18 year life of the mine. The mill design was then made with consideration for the estimated hardness of each block in terms of both SAG and Ball milling with allowance for annual periods when the ore is harder to grind. Operating specifications were selected to achieve an optimum of capital and operating costs through use of the CEET program. The geostatistics assigned the statistical error that arises from having a limited amount of sample testing data to the hardness estimate of each block of ore in the mine plan. The final design could then include a quantification of risk and determination of safety factors based on the accuracy of block hardness estimates and CEET model fitting.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional approach to plant design involves the extensive testing of a single large composite sample or a small number of composite samples that are reputed to represent the ore body. It is accepted that the tests used can accurately measure in the laboratory the grindability of the sample by a process representing that to be used in the plant. The size of equipment required to achieve a specified throughput and product size is then calculated from one of a variety of models that have been developed by metallurgists over years of trial and error. Since these tests and models are tried and tested, they are accepted as reasonably precise; however during the operation of the resulting plant the design is sometimes found to be inadequate. It is then suspected that the flaw in the design process lies in the samples not being sufficiently representative of the ore body, since using only a single or small number of composite samples does not recognize the variability of the hardness of the ore, nor does it allow for the lack of precision in the hardness value used in the design.This paper outlines a design procedure suited to an orebody that is described by a geostatistical analysis of a reasonably large number of small samples of drill core. The analysis required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the orebody, together with a mine plan of the blocks to be mined during the proposed life of the mine. The mill design was then made using the estimated hardness of each individual block with an allowance for annual fluctuations in the grindability of the ore. The geostatistical analysis assigned a statistical error to the hardness estimates of blocks and of each production year such that the final design included risk estimates and safety factors based on the possible errors that arise from having a limited amount of sample data (Kosick et al. 2002)."

"Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. The year 1948 saw the successful application of DuPont’s “sand mill” for pigment grinding. Subsequent years have led to the development of different types of stirred mills spanning a number of industries that require fine and ultrafine grinding. In the context of the mining industry, smaller grain size and other mineralogical characteristics have motivated the need to grind finer. In order to address this need, the interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years as can be illustrated by the large body of literature published over this same period of time. The typical observation reported in the literature is that in certain circumstances stirred milling is significantly more efficient than ball milling. Despite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills. The aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of how power and energy is affected by stirred mill impellor design and mill operation. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the power models found in the literature followed by a general description of DEM and CFD stirred mill models as well as the insights that can be drawn from them. Finally, a generic stirred mill power model will be presented and applied to different stirred mill types in order to develop some insights into the differences between different mill types. The paper will close with a discussion on some of the challenges that these models have and how future research might contribute to overcoming them."

Design for safety is critical to metallurgical plants, due to the inherently dangerous nature of their processes. Two significant areas of concern are: 1. preventing catastrophic process failures that cause damage or injury; and 2. operational safety that directly affects those working in or living near the plant. Process safety involves human behaviour, but the designer can eliminate or control hazards by engineering approaches, and control impacts through the design of the operating procedures. The tools available to guide safe facility design include bowtie analysis, hazard analysis, and hazard and operability studies. Clean plant design principles can guide the design process to address in-plant occupational health and safety issues. Auditing and review is a key part of the overall design process.

"Nickelhütte Aue GmbH is specialized in the recycling of waste materials containing non-ferrous metals. We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. Our production is based on synergy effects due to the combination of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy. As an example we can mention our heat recovery system and internal recycling of by-products. "The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."

This paper deals with the nickel smelter and refinery concepts Outokumpu has applied at Harjavalta and several other plants. Also other process routes and modifications developed and tested by Outokumpu during the recent years are highlighted. Outokumpu started nickel production in Harjavalta in 1959. Until 1995 the Flash Smelting - Peirce-Smith (PS) converting route was applied. High grade nickel matte from the converting step was further refined by means of leaching and electrowinning to produce cathode nickel. In 1995 the nickel production capacity was increased from 17 000 t/a to 52 000 t/a based on the Direct Outokumpu Nickel Smelting Process (DON). In the DON process PS converting is eliminated and high grade nickel matte with low Fe-content is directly produced in the flash smelting furnace (FSF). Metal values from the smelting slag are recovered in the electric furnace (EF) as iron containing Ni-matte. The DON process can be operated with either two matte concept, where high grade FSF matte and EF matte are produced, or a single matte concept, where EF matte is recycled to the smelting furnace and thus only one type of high grade matte is obtained. The additional refinery capacity at Harjavalta is based on hydrogen reduction producing.

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

A practical simple method is proposed to estimate the tensile strength (st) of strong brittle rocks from the strength ratio of R= sc/st = 8 sc/sci, where sc is the uniaxial compressive strength and sci is the crack initiation stress in an uniaxial compression test. 8 is the Griffith strength ratio and the term sc/sci accounts for the difference of crack growth or propagation in tension and compression in uniaxial compression tests. sci can be reliably obtained from volumetric strain measurement or acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. With the strength ratio R determined, the tensile strength can be indirectly obtained from the result of uniaxial compression tests. In addition, a practical estimate of the Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi is presented and it is suggested that mi = 12 sc/sci can be applied to strong, brittle rocks in high confinement zone and mi = 8 sc/sci can be applied to low confinement to tension zones. It is found that the predicted tensile strengths and Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi using this method are in good agreement with test data. The rock strength parameters like st and mi, which require specialty tests such as direct tensile (or Brazilian) and triaxial compression tests for their determination, can be reasonably estimated from uniaxial compression tests.

A novel separation process for detoxifying cadmium-containing residues arising from zinc hydrometallurgical processes has been developed. An initial investigation indicated that a high concentration of zinc in the sulfate solution can be effectively separated from cadmium by solvent extraction with P204 (di(2-ethylhexly)phosphoric acid, D2EHPA). The mixture of sulfuric acid and ammonium citrate ((NH4)3C6H5O7) is thus used to extract metals from the residue at room temperature. Copper in the leachate is recovered by solvent extraction (SX) with LIX 973. Cobalt in the raffinate from the copper SX process is recovered by precipitation with a-nitroso-ß-naphthol. The results show that more than 50% of the copper and virtually all the zinc, cadmium and cobalt in the residue can be leached under the experimental conditions used here. Virtually all dissolved copper and cobalt can be recovered in the subsequent solvent extraction and precipitation processes. The presence of (NH4)3C6H5O7 could significantly facilitate the extraction of zinc by D2EHPA in the subsequent separation of zinc and cadmium. More than 97% of the dissolved zinc can be recovered through a two-stage counter current solvent extraction process. After separating copper, cobalt and zinc, cadmium can easily be recovered from the solution either by cementation with zinc powder or by electrowinning, while the purified solution can be recycled back to the leaching process.
