Introduction The recent uranium discovery at Theano point, lake Superior, is probably a rediscovery of the first reported Canadian uranium occurrence. A description of material from the original discovery was published in 1847 by J. L. LeConte, and many attempts have been made to relocate the deposit. Such attempts have in the past been unsuccessful because of vagueness in the original description of the locality. Besides being a prospect that seems to merit development work, the Camray discovery is important because it reaffirms the occurrence of pitchblende in the eastern part of the Precambrian shield. Much staking followed the announcement of the discovery, and some additional finds have been reported. Location The Camray discovery is at the shore of Theano point, lake Superior, about seventy miles north of Sault Ste. Marie (see Figure 1). It is in township 29, range XIV, district of Algoma. The showing is two miles from Highway No. 17, and is reached by a rough trail that leaves the highway at mileage 72.9 from Sault Ste. Marie. There are no towns of any size nearer than Sault Ste. Marie.

"1. INTRODUCTIONTo say that the environment will be a dominant issue in the 1990' s is an understatement. A world-wide ""green revolution"" is taking place not only with the general public and politicians, but in the boardrooms and plant facilities of corporations around the world. There is probably not a plant manager who has not been requested by his corporation to assist in some way on environmental issues by providing advice and strategy, by dealing with customer or community concerns, by considering environmental matters in transactions, by developing new environmental compliance policies and requirements, and so on.There are, in the author's view, three main challenges for the mining industry in the environmental area in the 1990's. This paper will discuss each in turn. The first challenge is the concept of ""sustainable development"". Whatever the meaning of this much-debated phrase, we are rapidly moving beyond the buzzword, and into the specifics. It will clearly impact on the way we manage our companies, our communities and our personal lives.The second is the challenge of personal liability; particularly for officers, directors, supervisors and managers of the corporation. For example, in Ontario today, a good percentage of prosecutions for pollution offences are against individuals, usually managers and supervisors, in addition to the prosecutions against the corporation itself for the same offence. In all likelihood, prosecutions will increase in number and will increasingly be directed at individuals. A corporate president has already served a jail term for contempt of court related to his corporation's breach of a court order related to sewer by-law offences. Although the case is on appeal, another president has become the first officer in Canada to be sentenced to jail for violation of an environmental protection statute. Other corporate officers and directors have recently been charged with breach of their duty under Ontario's Environmental Protection Act."

"The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin. In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. Design for safety is critical to metallurgical plants, due to the inherently dangerous nature of their processes. Two significant areas of concern are: 1. preventing catastrophic process failures that cause damage or injury; and 2. operational safety that directly affects those working in or living near the plant. Process safety involves human behaviour, but the designer can eliminate or control hazards by engineering approaches, and control impacts through the design of the operating procedures. The tools available to guide safe facility design include bowtie analysis, hazard analysis, and hazard and operability studies. Clean plant design principles can guide the design process to address in-plant occupational health and safety issues. Auditing and review is a key part of the overall design process.

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. The haulage cycle is the sequence which a haulage vehicle must first arrive at the loading area, then turn around and reverse into position. Once it is loaded, the vehicle leaves and travels to the unloading area, where again it must turn around and back up to unload. The cycle is repeated over and over again. The Vector Neutral truck is a rubbertired, self-propelled hauling vehicle designed such that it eliminates the requirement to turn around and back-up to either load or unload. Vector Neutral Truck Cycle: 1.) Travel from the load station to the dump station. 2.) Stop and dump load. 3.) Travel from the dump station to the load station. 4.) Stop and load. The Advantage is in the Difference: 1.) Shorter distance traveled. 2.) Fewer brake and steering actuations. 3.) Easier to automate. 4.) Easier to adapt for remote control operation.

This paper deals with the nickel smelter and refinery concepts Outokumpu has applied at Harjavalta and several other plants. Also other process routes and modifications developed and tested by Outokumpu during the recent years are highlighted. Outokumpu started nickel production in Harjavalta in 1959. Until 1995 the Flash Smelting - Peirce-Smith (PS) converting route was applied. High grade nickel matte from the converting step was further refined by means of leaching and electrowinning to produce cathode nickel. In 1995 the nickel production capacity was increased from 17 000 t/a to 52 000 t/a based on the Direct Outokumpu Nickel Smelting Process (DON). In the DON process PS converting is eliminated and high grade nickel matte with low Fe-content is directly produced in the flash smelting furnace (FSF). Metal values from the smelting slag are recovered in the electric furnace (EF) as iron containing Ni-matte. The DON process can be operated with either two matte concept, where high grade FSF matte and EF matte are produced, or a single matte concept, where EF matte is recycled to the smelting furnace and thus only one type of high grade matte is obtained. The additional refinery capacity at Harjavalta is based on hydrogen reduction producing.

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

"Nickelhütte Aue GmbH is specialized in the recycling of waste materials containing non-ferrous metals. We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. Our production is based on synergy effects due to the combination of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy. As an example we can mention our heat recovery system and internal recycling of by-products. "The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."

"This paper describes the design of an SABC grinding circuit using CEET technology applied to grindability data produced from testing 100 samples and distributed across the blocks of a mine plan using a geostatistical approach. The data distribution required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the 130 million ton Ruby Creek orebody together with a mine plan of about 11000 blocks to be mined during the proposed 18 year life of the mine. The mill design was then made with consideration for the estimated hardness of each block in terms of both SAG and Ball milling with allowance for annual periods when the ore is harder to grind. Operating specifications were selected to achieve an optimum of capital and operating costs through use of the CEET program. The geostatistics assigned the statistical error that arises from having a limited amount of sample testing data to the hardness estimate of each block of ore in the mine plan. The final design could then include a quantification of risk and determination of safety factors based on the accuracy of block hardness estimates and CEET model fitting.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional approach to plant design involves the extensive testing of a single large composite sample or a small number of composite samples that are reputed to represent the ore body. It is accepted that the tests used can accurately measure in the laboratory the grindability of the sample by a process representing that to be used in the plant. The size of equipment required to achieve a specified throughput and product size is then calculated from one of a variety of models that have been developed by metallurgists over years of trial and error. Since these tests and models are tried and tested, they are accepted as reasonably precise; however during the operation of the resulting plant the design is sometimes found to be inadequate. It is then suspected that the flaw in the design process lies in the samples not being sufficiently representative of the ore body, since using only a single or small number of composite samples does not recognize the variability of the hardness of the ore, nor does it allow for the lack of precision in the hardness value used in the design.This paper outlines a design procedure suited to an orebody that is described by a geostatistical analysis of a reasonably large number of small samples of drill core. The analysis required the identification of the location of the sample points and a geological plan of the orebody, together with a mine plan of the blocks to be mined during the proposed life of the mine. The mill design was then made using the estimated hardness of each individual block with an allowance for annual fluctuations in the grindability of the ore. The geostatistical analysis assigned a statistical error to the hardness estimates of blocks and of each production year such that the final design included risk estimates and safety factors based on the possible errors that arise from having a limited amount of sample data (Kosick et al. 2002)."

Higher prices for natural gas or oil have motivated the copper industry to reexamine the modes of oxygen and oxy-fuel burner usage at operating plants. With rising energy costs and the growing importance of environmental protection, burner usage and burner operations have become the focus of several investigations and optimization efforts. One possible approach to lower energy usage is through combustion using tonnage oxygen. When such oxygen is used, the flame temperature increases and operational efficiency is improved. As well, with the correct technology, due to the presence of lower levels of harmful substances such as NOx in the off gas, there is improved environmental performance. As regards copper production, furnaces are employed for both concentrate smelting or for melting and casting operations. The use of tonnage oxygen in concentrate burners for smelting provides for a higher thermal efficiency. For furnaces employed for melting, air-operated burners may in fact have an initial advantage because a long radiant flame is typically generated, thus providing for a higher degree of heat transmission. This paper describes the new experimental burner chamber of Messer Austria GmbH which provides for testing of the combustion of natural gas with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and the use of special water cooling ducts that simulates a metal charge during melting, The operational effectiveness of the burner is determined from temperature and off-gas analysis data. "Characterizing the spatial distribution of rock stresses is a challenge, especially in the geologically complex environments typically found at most metalliferous mines. Therefore, instead of focusing, specifically, on the task of making stress measurements, the engineer should instead attempt to develop a better understanding of the interaction between stress, mining geometry and rock mass behaviour. This paper demonstrates such an approach using a Canadian Shield hardrock mine case study, in which geomechanical models are used to relate stress, mining geometry, and rock mass properties to observed excavation response, and numerical modelling is used to better quantify this interaction.IntroductionUnderstanding how the mine geometry, field stresses and rock mass interact to produce the observed rock mass response to mining can be a significant challenge. Consider our present ability to quantify the basic geomechanical design input data. Mine geometry is normally quantified in more detail than is required for analysis purposes. Our understanding of rock mass strength and stiffness is far from complete, but established procedures do exist to obtain estimates of these parameters based on index and laboratory testing data and field mapping. Our ability to quantify field stresses is probably the most limited, in part because stress measurements are difficult and expensive to carry out, and in part because the stresses vary to an unknown degree from point to point within the rock mass. The engineer must, therefore, consider whether or not stress measurements are justified and, when they are, where the average stress state needs to be quantified and how many of which type of measurements will be required to determine the average stresses.Such was the case at Ansil mine, a massive sulphide deposit in hard rock located at a depth of more than one kilometre in the northern Québec portion of the Canadian Shield. The Ansil orebody was relatively rich, but small, with the potential for significant stress-related problems. As a result, geomechanical design had to be done carefully from the start – there would be little opportunity to modify the mining strategy once production had begun, and the economic consequences of stope dilution and rock mass instability would be severe. An extensive stress measurement campaign was carried out, but the determined stress magnitudes were unexpectedly low. The designers were, therefore, faced with a dilemma:"

"Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. The year 1948 saw the successful application of DuPont’s “sand mill” for pigment grinding. Subsequent years have led to the development of different types of stirred mills spanning a number of industries that require fine and ultrafine grinding. In the context of the mining industry, smaller grain size and other mineralogical characteristics have motivated the need to grind finer. In order to address this need, the interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years as can be illustrated by the large body of literature published over this same period of time. The typical observation reported in the literature is that in certain circumstances stirred milling is significantly more efficient than ball milling. Despite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills. The aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of how power and energy is affected by stirred mill impellor design and mill operation. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the power models found in the literature followed by a general description of DEM and CFD stirred mill models as well as the insights that can be drawn from them. Finally, a generic stirred mill power model will be presented and applied to different stirred mill types in order to develop some insights into the differences between different mill types. The paper will close with a discussion on some of the challenges that these models have and how future research might contribute to overcoming them."

Water-cooled parts of submerged arc furnaces are potentially dangerous, especially if molten matte or slag contacts the water. Explosion hazards and metal run-outs generate high costs for production loss and repairs - not mentioning the possible loss of human life. This paper reports about practical results of wear measurement on intensive water-cooled tap-holes and spray-cooled side walls. On the one hand an embedding technology has been developed, that is used e.g. in water-cooled copper tap blocks or copper side wall coolers. Second the application of the sensor installation on the inner side of a water-cooled steel shell will be discussed. The fibre-optic sensor is fed through a specially arranged piping system and measures numerous temperatures over its entire length. By using the thermal conductivity of the installed refractory materials the lining thickness is calculated. The practical installation of the sensors will be discussed and the results of the wear measurement will be compared to the theoretical FEM calculations. The highly sensitive and accurate temperature measurement, as well as the recalculation of the impact of differences in the cooling water temperature, allows the exact determination of the remaining lining thickness. The discussed technologies offer efficient and safe monitoring of tap-holes, side walls and other endangered parts of pyro-metallurgical smelters.
