Demand for both gem and industrial diamonds is very strong. Synthetic production supplies industrial uses, but synthetic gems remain inferior and expensive, so the large gem market is supplied by mining. Several major mines have been depleted, and the market is receptive to new sources of high quality gems. Canada's Precambrian terrane, extending across the Canadian Shield and under the Phanerozoic cover of the Plains and Hudson Bay, has excellent potential for diamonds, but exploration conditions are difficult due to recent glaciation. Early world exploration relying on recognition of diamond in alluvial sediments was adequate to launch pre- 1900 production from India, Brazil, and Africa. Exploration success in Canada, as was the case in Russia and other more recently discovered sources, however, had to await large investments in effort supported by advanced science and technology. Canadian exploration in many ways is similar to that in other regions, relying on analysis of tectonics, indicator minerals, geophysical surveys, and multiple stages of drilling and sampling. Very different from other regions, however, is Canada's surficial environment, in which recent glaciation has caused fresh indicator minerals to be transported hundreds of km. Exploration accelerated in Canada after 1960, first in Ontario and the Arctic Islands, then in Saskatchewan in 1988, and most importantly after the Chuck Fipke - Stew Blusson discovery at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, in 1991 that led to the billion-dollar BHP - Dia Met Ekati Mine that opened in 1998. In 2003, production from Ekati will be supplemented by that from the similar and nearby Diavik Mine of Rio Tinto and Aber. These mines will bring Canadian output to over 10% of world supply, and will position Canada with Botswana and Russia as world leaders in production of high quality gem diamonds. There could be other mines as well, as sites across the Arctic and in the south from Alberta to Québec are being explored by an array of companies, including De Beers, other majors, and several juniors.

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. Physical Conditions Great Britain The physical conditions in the mines investigated in Great Britain are similar to those found in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, with the important difference that many of the coal seams visited were interspersed by a large number of heavy faults, making the development of a continuous face operation difficult, and in many cases the life of a unit development was exceptionally short, adding to unit cost; but in spite of these difficulties, a great deal has been accomplished in the application of mechanical loading units in a number of the mines in the areas visited. The coal-bearing measures, as in Nova Scotia, consist of shales and sandstones, and in some sections mussel bands overlie the coal seams making roof conditions difficult'. In several mines, the main roof consisted of weak shale bind, being held by a coal roof of varying thickness. This shale bind had a tendency to flow when the coal roof was broken. The floor, in some cases where cutter loaders were operated successfully, consisted of weak, flaky shales with very little resistance and a tendency to disintegrate into powder when broken. The depth of cover under which these mines were operating varied from 250 feet to 2,340 feet, with an average of 1,700 feet. The coal seams varied in height from 3 feet to 8 feet 6 inches, and the gradients from level to 33 per cent. The seams vary in hardness, but all-with the exception of one seam, the 'Morrison Busty'- presented a cutting problem similar to that found in Nova Scotia. The structure and cleavage of the coal was well defined and uniform. Some of the seams visited were gassy, ?but the temperature of the workings generally was not in excess of 70°F.

"Industrial minerals include a group of more than fifty minerals which are marketed into almost all the sectors of industry; they are the backbone of many manufacturing industries. Table I shows major end-uses for industrial minerals in manufacturing sectors. At Energy, Mines and Resources, industrial minerals are divided in three major categories: (I) agro chemicals and chemicals, (2) construction mineral s, and (3) ceramics and specialty minerals. A listing of the major groups of minerals is shown in Table 2. Agro-chemicals and chemicals are sold on the basis of their chemical content and purity. Construction minerals or structural minerals are distinguished by their performance as low cost and bulky commodities. Ceramics and specialty minerals are performance-specific and are sold for their property on imparting functions on end-products. Industrial minerals have unique characteristics that are useful in many stages of processing; from crushed size to micronized fillers a single mineral ca n serve a broad range of industries because of its intrinsic properties."

Calcium, magnesium, bromide and iodide extraction from formation waters for use as industrial minerals has occurred in several countries, but not yet in Canada. Potential commercial brine fields exist in th e Upper Devonian Beaverhill Lake Formation of so uthern Alberta, and the Middle Devonian Elk Point Subgroup of north-central Alberta, f rom which calcium, magnesium and bromide are potential products. Iodide contents in fo rmation waters f rom the Upper Cretaceous Belly River Formation and the Lower Cretaceous Viking and Bow Island fo rmations in central and southern Alberta are at the lower range limit of commercial iodide-bearing formation waters elsewhere in the world. Available information is insufficient 10 outline potentially commercial areas in Alberta, but such info rmation can be most easily obtained f rom test borings for shallow natural gas. Lithium is not now produced commercially f rom formation waters but its content should be monitored in view of f uture increased demand for this metal.

Brown, senior tax partner of Price Waterhouse, Canada, to the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in Dallas.IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to tell a story-and it is a story with a moral. The first thing to recognize is that, with depressed metal prices and weakening western economies, high taxes, in and of themselves, are not really the cause of the Canadian mining industry's present doldrums. However, the character and level of mining taxes in Canada has had a profound influence on the development of the industry over the past decade, and the expectations of what the future holds for mining men in Canada will equally play an important role in the future development of the Canadian industry. Our tax system has, in the past, served as a negative and destabilizing influence in the mining industry: it has contributed to a major short-fall in investment commitments and hence in the contribution which the mining industry can make to the Canadian economy, and the adverse effect on the industry of previous high marginal tax rates was made far worse by the confusing, contradictory and perverse nature of the tax system itself."

A new heat transfer technology --- termed Thermopump technology has been developed. This technology originates from conventional heat pipe configurations but has now evolved into its own class of heat transfer units, which we refer to as `Thermopumps (TP)'. A key feature is that Thermopump technology can be applied to high temperature / high heat flux environments where conventional heat pipe technology fails. Moreover, when implemented in less demanding applications where heat pipes appear to operate, Thermopump units have been found to function more smoothly and reliably. This paper will introduce Thermopump technology and several applications of this technology in steelmaking and refining will also be discussed. In addition, this paper will focus on three classes of applications: 1) waterless, non-consumable, high efficiency Thermopump oxygen lance and/or burner for EAF's, 2) Thermopump ladle lance for the desulfurization process, and 3) Thermopump cooling panels for furnace walls and roofs. Facilities equipped with Thermopump technology are expected to he better than the current corresponding ones in terms of increasing productivity and energy efficiency while at the same time lowering operating costs.

The La Caridad copper smelter, located in Nacozari, Mexico, have started a multi-year plan to reduce sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions into the environment. In 2014 the smelter completed a voluntary plant-wide SO2 process emissions inventory as part of the smelter’s proactive environmental stewardship policy. In turn, this triggered the development of several environmental projects to alleviate these emissions. A strategy consisting of improved capture efficiency of the sources with greatest impact has been followed to maximize cost-effectiveness. The reduction of secondary emissions from the Teniente Converter, as well as of primary and secondary emissions from the Peirce-Smith Converters have been key areas of priority. Additionally, a new system to capture and recover particulate matter from the Anode Refining Furnaces off-gas is also in the process of being implemented. This paper presents an overview of the work developed behind this effort and the smelter’s vision towards a greener future. INTRODUCTION The La Caridad copper smelter is owned and operated by Metalurgica de Cobre S.A. de C.V. (a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico). Currently, the smelter has a production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of anodic copper per year. The smelter is coupled with a 300,000 t/y electrolytic refinery. Other by-products (such as precious metals and sulfuric acid) are also generated as part of an integrated process. The original smelter started operating in 1986 with one Furukawa concentrate dryer, one Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF), two slag cleaning electric furnaces (SCFs), three Peirce-Smith Converters (PSCs), two Anode Refining Furnaces (ARFs) and one casting wheel. In 1997, a plant expansion project was concluded with the installation of one steam dryer, one Modified Teniente Converter (MTC), one additional ARF, one additional casting wheel, and the electrolytic refinery [1]. Over the years, the smelter management has implemented numerous environmental projects to alleviate SO2 and particulate matter (PM) emissions. The smelter process gas handling system captures the process gases from the FSF, MTC, and the three PSCs. The process gases are cleaned and conditioned and sent to the two acid plants. The first acid plant (with a capacity of 226,000 Nm3/h, wet basis) was commissioned in 1988 to process the FSF and PSC off-gases. A second acid plant (with a capacity of 195,000 Nm3/h, wet basis) was commissioned as part of the smelter expansion project [1]. The PSCs also have a secondary gas handling system with a dedicated baghouse and stack. The Furukawa dryer off-gas reports to a dedicated electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for dedusting before venting via a local stack. Process gas from the two SCFs, along with hygiene ventilation from various sources inside the smelter (including matte and slag tapping hoods from the FSF) report to a baghouse-based gas handling system and vent to atmosphere via a local stack. The original ARFs do not have an off-gas handling system, however, each ARF has a post- combustion chamber which naturally vents the process gases to the atmosphere via a dedicated stack.

"The magnetic separation removal rate of pyrite could be improved effectively by increasing the susceptibility of pyrite. The electromagnetic characteristics and absorption response performance of high-sulfur fine coal were studied in strengthening the susceptibility of pyrite. In the process of treating the sample through the microwave, electromagnetic energy could be converted into heat energy due to dielectric loss and magnetic loss. The RL(dB) was evaluate the performance of absorption response of coal. The microwave improved the susceptibility was in ultra-high frequency region, which is the most natural resonance. The absorption fine coal to microwave was strengthened and microwave energy was improved by adding the magnetite powder with double loss characteristics as the microwave absorber. The dielectric properties and permeability characteristics of the fine coal trend were investigated by maxing magnetite powder. The microwave absorption in different coal thickness was surveyed through the reflection of energy loss.INTRODUCTIONMicrowave desulfurization is one of the most important research directions (Haque, 1999; Makul, Rattanadecho, & Agrawal, 2014; Su, Tang, Zhang, Jing, & Bai, 2014). The working principle of microwave absorption response can be briefly described as the interaction of the sample with microwave energy, which will result in the microwave energy converting into heat energy loss (Keangin & Rattanadecho, 2013). For specific samples, the polarization effect includes multiple polarization mechanisms(Meikap, Purohit, & Mahadevan, 2005). Different polarization mechanisms have different occurrence time and dominant mechanisms. Meantime, energy consumption will be occurred during the process of polarization effect (Chelgani & Jorjani, 2011; Rowson & Rice, 1990) . The absorption of microwave energy in the fine coal is a process of electromagnetic response (Znamenácková, Lovás, Mockovciaková, Jakabský, & Briancin, 2005). Microwave transfers the electromagnetic waves into the heat energy by microwave dielectric loss and magnetic loss for achieving the absorption of microwave energy in the treatment of samples (Lee, Kim, Kim, Chung, & Kim, 2004). The additive magnetic medium is Fe3O4 belonging to microwave energy absorber of double loss medium (Uslu, Atalay, & Arol, 2003)."

"Previous work has shown that the strengthening Al-Mn alloys with copper leads to the formation of an undesirable reduction in recrystallized grain size. In this study the mechanisms of strengthening and recrystallization behavior in a continuously cast automotive heat exchanger fin stockof Al-1.1wt%Mn-0.5wt%Fe-0.3wt%Si with a0.3wt%Cu addition were investigated. Metallurgical analysis revealed that the Cu strengthening was dominated by the formation of dispersoid particles, while solid solution strengthening decreased with the Cu additions. This result is attributed to the decrease in the amount of Mn solid solution. The post brazing recrystallized grain size was reduced compared to that not containing Cu. It is postulated that the Cu addition leads to a decrease in the amount of Mn in solid solution which leads to a finer grain size. This effect is attributed to Mn in the aluminum matrix inhibiting boundary migration but allowing other grains to grow during heat treatment. The results are rationalized based on particle stimulated nucleation (PSN), wherein dispersoid particles are more likely to become active recrystallization nuclei during the heat treatment. The increase in the number of active dispersoid particles with Cu addition is correlated to the recrystallized grain structure.INTRODUCTIONImprovements in properties such as strength, braze ability and corrosion resistance in thermal fin stock alloys are all means to gain improved efficiency in heat exchangers particularly in automotive applications. While Al-Mn alloys dominate automotive heat exchanger fin stock alloy, even small chemical compositional changes can profoundly influence these properties (Kawaharaet al., 2004; Yoshino et al., 2009). The microstructure (particularly the grain size and shape) also plays a key role in determining the product performance and hence the thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) must also be considered. The casting method (typically conventional direct chill, DC, or continuous casting) significantly influences the properties in no small part due to the very different TMP routes that are used. Continuous casting is generally favored for fin stock applications as its higher cooling rate (which can be 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than DC casting) leads to finer as-solidified intermetallic particles and an increase in super-saturated solid solution elements (such as Mn)that are known to improve fin stock performance such as strength, braze ability(Okiet al., 2008)."

However, this productivity is now, more than ever, dependent on the continued operation of the equipment. A prolonged breakdown of a critical component can have a significant effect on companies' bottom-line results. As more technologically sophisticated equipment is introduced, maintenance costs become an increasingly important factor for mining companies.Fortunately, sound modern management principles are being used more often in maintenance departments. Progressive maintenance managers are turning to computers to help manage the myriad of details associated with running a maintenance organization.Some maintenance departments in larger mining operations would find it difficult, if not impossible, to operate at current productivity levels without their computer systems. "The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

This work concerns the identification of weak zones in the structure of a rock mass endangered by outburst of gases and rocks in the Rudna copper ore mine at greater depths (approximately 1200 m). A special methodology has been undertaken for the recognition of that threat in the wake of an outburst in the mine in 2009. No similar phenomena have been previously recorded in KGHM Polska Miedz copper ore mines. The research described in this paper was carried out in the new part of the deposit prepared for mining. Geophysical methods were used: seismic tomography and borehole ground penetrating radar (BGPR), along with particular identifications using geological engineering methods. In the researched area, Permian layers of sandstone and shale clay (Weissliegendes formation) and of Zechstein dolomite (top of Rotliegend formation) and anhydrite occur in the copper ore deposit. The rock layers are characterized by variable thickness and intensity of mineralization, varying internal structure, and local fracturing containing different gases and water. It is assumed that accumulation of gases occurs in the tectonically fractured dolomite. The study was focused on the recognition of the structure and properties of the dolomite layer lying directly within the roof of excavations. The first tests were performed with seismic tomography for the recognition of anomalous changes in the elastic properties of the rock mass. The results of these studies were used to design a control borehole for a detailed geological engineering assessment and BGPR surveys with 100MHz antennas. Seismic tomography enabled the identification of changes in Pwave and S-wave velocity, the Vp/Vs ratio, dynamic Poisson's ratio and dynamic Young's modulus. It was clear that seismic anomalies required verification by other methods. The BGPR survey was performed in a specially designed borehole, passing through the selected seismic anomalies. While the borehole was being drilled, the outflow of gases was identified, with varying amounts of CH4, CO2, and H2S detected, as well as water outflow. The results of BGPR confirmed the location of a reservoir of water and gases, about 30 m in length, found in layer of dolomite. The direct cause of the BGPR anomaly was assumed to be intensive fracturing, a greater content of clay material in the dolomite, and the presence of water in the fractured zone. The BGPR image was correlated with information on lithology, fracturing based on the RQD index and additional information acquired during drilling about water and gases surveys and other symptoms. The achieved results also showed a very strong correlation between the location of the zone containing gases and water and the anomalous S-wave velocity and field of dynamic Poisson?s ratio, and to a lesser extent other seismic parameters. It was found that the other measured seismic anomalies may be of the same nature as those identified in the control borehole and accordingly will require the implementation of detailed identification. The performed tests have also shown the usefulness of geophysical methods to identify geodynamic hazards under the geological and mining conditions of the copper ore deposit in the Rudna mine.

"Considering overgrinding in a grinding process, the grinding characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a HPGR and a conventional CC were comparatively studied. The major properties including particle size, grinding kinetics and grinding technical efficiency (Et) were investigated. Individual size distributions (ISDs) of -2.0mm in a HPGR product showed a more significant “double-peak” characteristic than a CC product. As a result, HPGR products were finer and had a wider full-size distribution because of the greater proportion of fines. The parameters m and zi in m-th order grinding kinetics were analyzed by the partial-derivative method and the critical time tc(tc = exp (1/ zi)) was obtained. zi mainly affected the breakage rate when t < tc; otherwise, m mainly affected the breakage rate. In these tests, tc was considerably higher than the grinding times, and HPGR products yielded a higher zi-value than the CC product for the same sieve size. This indicated that HPGR products had a higher breakage rate and needed a shorter grinding time for a certain grinding fineness. Et was calculated by simulating the size distributions of batch grinding products. HPGR products gave a lower Et at a decreasing rate than the CC products for -2.0 mm feed and -0.5mm feed, and then showed a slightly higher Et for -2.0+0.5 mm feed. This indicated that overginding in HPGR full-size products was more serious under the condition of coarse grinding, whereas the efficiency was higher and overgrinding weakened significantly in HPGR coarse products because of screening-out fines. Based on the above research, a new process of “ultra-crushing in HPGR – classified grinding” was advanced, reducing ores tonnage into first stage ball mill significantly, improving grinding efficient and weakening overgrinding in the whole grinding process.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, comminution accounts for a substantial portion (approximately 60~70%) of the energy consumed in plants. As an ultra-fine crushing equipment,the application of the HPGR for industrial comminution has been paid close attention because of its low specific energy, low steel consumption, high capacity and high ratio of reduction, among others (Schonert, 1998; Norgate & Weller, 1994; Fuerstenau & Kapur, 1995). HPGRs comprise two counter-rotating rolls that draw feed material into the roll gap. One roll is fixed to the mainframe, while the other movable roll is mounted on slides and positioned by hydraulic rams. The specific pressing force (SPF) (i.e., total force divided by projected roller area) is typically in the range of 3~9 N/mm2 depending on the application, while pressures of up to 1000 N/mm2 have been measured within the operating gap (Maxton , Morley, & Bearman , 2003)."

"In South Africa most of the large gold mines operate between 1500m and 4500m below surface where reef is accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration. Due to the complexity of the ventilation networks used to ventilate these mines and the potential disastrous consequences associated with underground fires, it is of utmost importance that these mines are managed in such a way that underground fires are prevented. However, if they do occur the fires are managed to firstly prevent the loss of life and secondly protect the infrastructure and viability of the mine. The aim of this paper will be to: • Discuss current SA mining legislation regarding underground fire prevention and control. • Examine these fires from a risk management perspective by means of a bowtie assessment. • List and discuss the major Threats and Consequences as determined by the bowtie assessment. • Discuss the various prevention and consequence controls for deep level underground fires. • Examine how to effectively run an emergency control room. From this, a practical way of designing, implementing and managing an underground fire management system is explored. Lastly, the paper identifies new technology and ways of thinking and how these can be used to combat underground fires. INTRODUCTION The orebodies of South African gold mines are generally narrow tabular structures that vary in thickness between 0.8m and 1.2m with an inclination of between 200 and 700. This, coupled with depths of between 1500m and 4500m, as well as the unpredictable geology, creates unique challenges and significantly impacts on mine designs and mining methods. In general, gold bearing reefs are accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration (Figure 1). Mining is very labour intensive with very limited mechanisation opportunities and this increases the risk to human life if an underground fire occurs. On 16 September 1986, one of the worst mining disasters in SA mining history took place when 177 mineworkers were killed at Kinross Mine. An acetylene tank sparked flames that swept through the mining tunnel igniting plastic covering on the wiring and the flames also set fire to polyurethane foam. The burning plastic combined with polyurethane and the toxic fumes that filled the shafts caused the miners death. This incident was a stark reminder of the serious consequence that underground fires can have on human life as well as the crippling financial and asset impact for the mining companies. Over the past thirty years, the SA mining industry reduced the number of mine fires significantly by replacing normal timber support with fire retardant treated timber, alternative support systems such as backfill and elongate support and many other fire prevention initiatives. Although the number of fire incidents and number of fatalities due to fires does not show a direct correlation because of various factors, the controls put in place against fires has had an impact on the number of fire and explosion fatalities (Figure 2)."

Zinc and its alloys have been extensively used as replacements for Cadmium coatings in aeronautical and automobile industries. Zn alloys with low Co or Fe have been highly investigated but coatings with higher amount of Co are very difficult to achieve due to anomalism associated with these coatings. Anomalous Zn-Co-Fe alloy is a relatively recent addition to the family of Zn alloys. It is found that the addition of Fe in the electrolyte assist in overcoming the anomalism. In this research Zn-Co-Fe alloys especially with higher amount of Co (>15%) and Fe (~1%) are investigated, after overcoming the anomalism associated with its deposition, and the corrosion resistance is compared with pure Zn and Cd. It is found that an increase in Co to higher than 25 % accounts for a shift in the OCP to a level near Cd yet keeps it electronegative to steel. The coating shows superior corrosion resistance, in terms of its sacrificial and barrier properties in 3.5% NaC1 as compared to Zn and Cd.

"It is very important to reveal the lime dissolution mechanism in steelmaking slag, to promote its dissolution without calcium fluoride, which is now almost forbidden for use in most industrialized countries. In this research, the purpose was focused on the development of an experimental method to measure the mutual diffusivity of Ca2+ under the condition of lime dissolution into slag. By forming diffusion couples using a ""vacuum slag aspirating technique"", the method was established. The following mutual diffusivities of Ca2+, in CaO-SiO2-FeO slag systems, imitating oxygen steelmaking slag, were determined using this method:4.1*10-10 m2/s at 1400°C for 27wt.%CaO-53wt.%SiO2-20wt.%FeO slag,4.3* 10-10 m2/s and at 1400°C for 20wt.%CaO-40wt.%SiO2-40wt.%FeO slag, and 1.3*10-10 m2/s at 1250°C for 20wt.%CaO-40wt.%SiO2-40wt.%FeO slag.It was also verified that, if the basicity and ferrite content of the bulk slag are low, then a calcium silicate film forms on the lime surface, and drastically deters the lime dissolution."

"Even though acid mine drainage is an old problem, particularly in coal mining areas, its appearance in the form of a major environmental hazard in the hardrock mining districts of Ontario was unexpected. The yellow and amber coloured wastes that characterize an acid mine drainage situation were first noted by the Ontario Water Resources Commission in the uranium mining Elliot Lake district. Problems of a similar nature were also noted in the copper-lead-zinc camp at Manitouwadge, the nickel camp at Sudbury and at numerous isolated base metal properties, both in and out of the Province of Ontario.Without exception, when acid mine drainage type effluents were evident, the specific companies involved worked sulphide or sulphide-associated ores. Without exception, the ore bodies contained quantities of iron sulphide (in various mineralogical forms) and, without exception, the milling circuits serving these operations were such that the iron sulphides were rejected to the tailings areas as waste.Once in a tailings area and after a varying period of time, iron sulphides react to form water soluble salts which, when discharged in the effluents from the tailings area, can affect stream chemistry and stream ecology.It is not unusual that the minerals pyrite, marcasite and pyrrhotite (all iron sulphides) react to form a stable oxide under atmospheric conditions. The law of stability of rocks and minerals, for instance, states that rocks and minerals are stable only in the environment of their formation and, as the environment surrounding them changes, the rocks and minerals tend to change to other species which are relatively more nearly stable under the conditions of the new environment (a). Under atmospheric conditions, iron oxide exhibits a greater stability than iron sulphide."

This paper begins with a short history of air compressors, emphasizing their "roots" in the mining industry. It then describes the types of compressors available, including reciprocal, the various rotary positive-displacement compressors, and the centrifugal. The advantages and disadvantages of selecting a certain type of compressor over another are enumerated, considering customer requirements and operating costs, among other factors. Guidelines to operation and maintenance are discussed, including installation, monitoring and maintenance procedures. Finally, the paper addresses itself to future trends, with special attention being given to the system concept, the increasing use of rotary compressors, power consumption, reliability, packaging and noise attenuation.
