The steadily growing demand for metals and their price increase at metal exchanges make the mining and utilization of marine mineral resources like polymetallic nodules, manganese crusts or sulfide deposits in the near future a viable option to potentially increase the supply of base and precious metals. For a country with low potential to mine land-based resources like Germany, the industrial recovery of metals from marine mineral resources could lead to a decreased dependency on imports. In this study, seafloor massive sulfides from the German license area in the Indian Ocean (Kairei field, Southern Central Indian Ridge) are treated to recover copper and precious metals. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the transferability of existing metallurgical techniques to the raw material of deep-sea massive sulfides. As a starting point to process this unconventional resource, samples from the Indian Ocean are chemically analyzed and mineralogical characterized. A comparison is carried out between the samples and land-based copper resources, to highlight the potential which lies in mining the deep-sea floor. This paper will show the general possibility of applying a two-stage pyrometallurgical process, based on a concentrate smelting operation, followed by a converting operation in lab-scale to the provided samples of massive sulfides. Generated slag from the concentrate smelting and the converting operation are investigated by X-ray diffraction to determine the mineralogical composition. The two-stage pyrometallurgical process is investigated by the thermochemical modelling tool FactSageTM 7.2 to evaluate the phase distribution of relevant elements between the metal, matte, slag and gas phase. The thermochemical boundaries of the pyrometallurgical process are therefore set and the results of the thermochemical study can be used as an indicator for the efficiency of an up-scaled process and the generated amount of side-streams, which need to be further treated or circulated back into the process. INTRODUCTION Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) are the third kind of discovered deep-sea minerals besides ferromanganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Sharma, 2017). They occur in water depths around 250–4,000 m (Koschinsky et al., 2018). SMS are characterized by a high base metal and sulfide content. They were created by fluid circulation and hydrothermal convection over time (Han et al., 2018). Commonly, areas rich in SMS are associated with hydrothermal vent fields on the seafloor (Keith et al., 2018).

A low carbon-chain trithiocarbonate ((NaOOC)CH2SCSSNa), known as Orfom® D8, was tested as an organic depressant in the differential flotation separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite in the presence of sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX) or potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX). Flotation studies show that Orfom® D8 depressed chalcopyrite while molybdenite remained floatable. A study of the mechanism of adsorption indicated that Orfom® D8 adsorbs on chalcopyrite through its trithiol (CS -) functional group via both chemisorption and Orfom® D8-metal complexation. The Orfom® D8 depressant is selective and does not form any Orfom® D8-molybdenite bonds. Thus, the combination of the depressant in the presence of either collectors depressed the chalcopyrite and floated the molybdenite. Fundamental parameters of the Orfom® D8 including pKa determination as well as possible decomposition products of the depressant are reported. This study includes an economic case illustrating why using Orfom® D8 can be beneficial. INTRODUCTION Depressants are incorporated in mineral flotation units in the minerals processing industry to make or keep certain minerals selectively hydrophilic. Most reagents used are inorganic and include, for instance, sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS) which is the major reagent used for depressing sulphide minerals, particularly those containing copper, iron and lead. However, the issues with its use include high toxicity, tendency to explode, strong odour, and high consumption due to required high dosages as well as its tendency to oxidise in air. The latter can be overcome by conducting flotation in inert atmosphere such as nitrogen and recycling of the flotation process water. The use of more novel depressants that are essentially organic including homopolar reagents with hydrophilic functional groups on both ends of its structure adsorb onto a target mineral surface with one polar end, the other polar end orients into the bulk solution making the surface hydrophilic and thus, ensuring that the desired mineral does not float. The stringent environmental and safety regulations being implemented in recent times mean that the search for more environmentally friendly chemical reagents is a must have. The use of organic depressants for flotation systems such as Cu-Mo sulfide bulk concentrates has become increasingly important because of the health, safety and environmental issues surrounding the use of inorganic depressants. Nagaraj et al. (1983) investigated the Cu-Mo sulphide flotation system using a structure-activity study of depressants. They found that a major advantage of organic depressants is the ability to tailor-make organic molecules to suit many requirements and thus, eliminate the guess work approach that was predominant in the industry.

"In the present study, the reduction behavior of composite pellets comprising of iron oxide, synthetic graphite and slags were investigated in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Two different types of slags indicating silicate base and aluminate base slags were chosen to examine the effect of slag chemistry on the reduction behavior of pellets. Slag composition of binding materials has influences on the reactions occurring in composite pellets during direct reduction. In-situ high temperature visualization approach was used to observe the slag / iron / carbon interactions at 1773K (1500°C). The off-gases were measured by means of infrared analyzer to determine the reaction rates of the pellets. Different physical appearances during the in situ reaction inferred a strong correlation between the slag composition and internal reactions. In addition, compression tests were conducted to examine physical strength of the pellets. This investigation was carried out to establish feasibility of physical property control of pellets by selecting optimum slag compositions of binding materials INTRODUCTIONCurrently, most of the iron ore mines have facilities that make an ore more usable for the blast furnace operation by improving its physical properties (e.g. pelletizing and sintering). However, during the process, a large amount of fuel is supplied to indurate materials which consequently deteriorate energy efficiency and produce more CO2 emission. Along with increased interests, direct reduced iron (DRI) making process; simply without coke oven or sintering process, has opened the era of clean and environmental friendly iron making process. While some of the established DRI technologies such as Midrex and HYL were restricted to certain locations where natural gas is abundant, coal based technologies using Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF) such as FASMET and ITmk3 have been developed with regardless of expensive fuel deposit. In addition to the direct use of pulverized non coking coal and fine iron ore, RHF process also has advantages of utilizing waste materials such as EAF dust, biomass and recycled plastics. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the coal utilizing technologies as the unprocessed coal and the waste materials contain huge volatiles and ashes. Although recent investigations on volatiles in a RHF process (Sohn and Fruehan, 2005, 2006) have indicated the benefits of coal in terms of iron oxide reduction and have shown feasibility of multi-layer process, carbon composite pellets still have disadvantages because of its weak mechanical bonding strength. As the mixed system with carbon and oxides generates intermediate gases (e.g. CO and CO2) between solid particles, it is difficult to keep its physical state without the help of binding materials. In this reason, industries have been tried to use various binding materials such as bentonite, kaolinite and Portland cement. However, they are still struggling to find out new materials that provide not only sufficient mechanical strength but also metallurgical properties, such as porosity, reducibility and swelling throughout the reduction reaction. Recently, Canadian researchers (Aota et al, 2006) observed enhanced mechanical strength of pellets by using high alumina cement as a binder and concluded that the method could be used to recycle EAF dust as well, but in depth mechanism of reinforced strength has not been concerned. Most of the ashes coming from binders formulate certain type of slag during the reduction process due to its incombustibility. Thus, observation and regulation of slag property is an essential for the control of carbon composite pellet. Yet, only a little thermodynamic consideration from the perspective of slag chemistry has been adapted in the iron and steel making industries as ash has been easily ignored for its tiny proportion. "A study was undertaken to develop a flowsheet for treating a high grade silver/gold ore body by cyanidation, CCD and Merrill Crowe precipitation, with tailings detoxification to meet stringent limits for cyanide and thiocyanate concentrations in the final discharge. In one of the flowsheets examined, free cyanide in the final leach liquor was recycled to the mill where it was hoped that it might react beneficially with fresh ore to reduce the cyanide makeup by an equivalent amount. However, laboratory results suggested that most of the cyanide recycled to the mill reacted with iron forming a soluble ferrocyanide complex. This would have had a negative impact on cost, not only because the cyanide recycled to the mill could not be claimed as a credit, but also because the presence of ferrocyanide in the final tailings meant copper sulphate had to be added to the SO2/air cyanide detoxification process to precipitate the iron cyanide. In an alternative flowsheet that was examined, recycling of cyanide to the mill was abandoned, and this allowed the milled slurry to be pre-aerated in a single mixing tank before cyanidation. During alkaline pre-aeration, any ferrous ions that are generated in the mill are oxidized to ferric ions, which, unlike ferrous ions, are inert in cyanide solution. This significantly reduced cyanide consumption and lowered costs in the detoxification of the tailings. In this paper, the cost implication of these two circuits is compared.INTRODUCTIONMost of the gold that is produced by hydrometallurgical processes is recovered by cyanide leaching. The reason for that lies in the superior thermodynamic stability of the gold cyanide complex and the favorable economics this confers on the process (Fleming, 2014). However, the gold in most of the gold-bearing ores processed is a very minor component, and therefore, the leaching response is often dominated by that of the host minerals.Many gold ores treated by the cyanidation process contain iron minerals. Cyanide reacts readily with some iron minerals forming ferrocyanide as one of the compounds. Ferrocyanide is stable when solutions are exposed to air and does not retard the dissolution of gold. In fact, it has been claimed that potassium ferrocyanide in the presence of oxygen is a weak solvent for gold (Hedley & Tabachnick, 1958). The main problem with the formation of this compound is the consumption of cyanide. Ferrocyanide contains six molecules of cyanide for each atom of iron {Fe(CN)64-} so the wasteful consumption of cyanide is greatly increased by its presence. Thiocyanate is also often produced during the reaction of certain iron sulphide minerals with cyanide, and contributes to the wasteful consumption of cyanide. In addition, environmental regulations in certain countries demand that thiocyanate be removed from the tailings, and this adds significantly to the cost of tailings treatment."

"In 1993, trials of two innovative applications of liner support involving the replacement of bolts in the ground support system were undertaken at Inco mines. The first trial involved an evaluation of the effect of dynamic loading on mesh-reinforced boltless shotcrete in a sub-level cave mining area on 2400 level at Stobie Mine. The second trial involved an evaluation of the MIROC Mineguard spray-on liner as a replacement for bolts and screen support, or as a replacement for screen support alone, in a topsoil heading of a bulk, VRM (vertical retreat mining) stope on 3240 level at Lower Coleman Mine.In the Stobie Mine trial, an uppers retreat heading was supported using a two-pass system. First, shotcrete was applied 2 inches thick, followed by pinning of mesh screen to the back and walls. A second pass of another 2 inches of shotcrete was then performed. For recovery of the ore zone, a vertical slot was created using a Borepak blind boring machine. The uppers rings were blasted, one or two rings at a time, starting at the slot and retreating out of the heading. During blasting of the production rings, blast monitoring was used to record the ppvs (peak particle velocities). For a series of 5-ring blasts, the maximum ppvs were measured to be 0.4 m/s (16 in./s) with a maximum charge weight per delay of357 kg (800 Ib). Six 5-point convergence measurement stations were set up and after each blast the total rockmass convergence was measured using a tape extensometer. Although a maximum displacement of 100 mm (4 in.) was measured, the shotcrete still managed to provide some support junction. A support damage assessment was also done to try and relate blast vibration to effectiveness of the mesh reinforced shotcrete liner. This trial demonstrated the effect that blasting has, on a support system, and it also demonstrated the necessity of having the mesh reinforcement properly placed within the shotcrete."

Despite the claims of energy efficiency and the considerable development that has gone into dramatically extending rolls? life and facilitating rolls? change-out, in the six years since the last SAG conference, only a few HPGR operations have entered the realm of mineral processing. Risk barriers to the take-up of new equipment or processes are: a massive increase in materials handling issues as well as in the number of pieces of equipment required, low total circuit potential energy savings, and similar or higher capital costs. An alternative route is to make use of the complementary strengths of the HPGR and SAG in hybrid circuits. Minimising materials handling issues, providing an ideal balanced feed to the AG or SAG mill, and improving controllability through shifting grinding load as the RoM feed changes, are all potential major advantages to this approach. Conceptual circuit layouts, based on real measured ore and equipment data, are presented here to illustrate the potential production upside, the reduction in operating costs and the reduction in the physical and energy footprints.

Most of the secondary and low grade zinc raw materials cannot be treated successfully by either conventional roasting - leaching - electrowinning (RLE) process or even by atmospheric direct leaching process. The problems arising especially from high impurity content of these raw materials can be effectively solved by implementation of the solvent extraction process. The utilization of solvent extraction process has been demonstrated by Outotec with raw materials like Waelz oxide, crude zinc oxide and zinc containing concentrator tailings. Based on batch and continuous test work it has been shown that SHG quality zinc can be produced even from the lowest grade raw materials. Impurity control in the solvent extraction process has been examined. The solvent extraction process is the key feature of the whole zinc plant for such raw materials. However, design of the entire zinc process including neutralization and bleed treatment is important for optimization of investment and operation costs of the plant. Very careful evaluation of the zinc process with modern simulation tools is essential. The optimized Outotec zinc process ensures a sustainable and profitable process containing minimal effluent and requiring little residue treatment.

"During the summer of 1968, the author was employed in the Research Department of Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years, Dofasco has been conducting a program for developing more efficient control of its basic oxygen steelmaking process. The author was thus able to obtain a variety of viewpoints from both research engineers and furnace operators. He also had access to extensive literature dealing with BOF control schemes underway at other major steel producers. This paper describes the present state of developments in BOF steelmaking control.The necessity for efficient BOF control is pointed out. To appreciate the variables to be controlled, a brief outline of process fundamentals is included. Technical aspects of present methods of practical control are examined in detail; the relative merits of dynamic over static control models are emphasized. Finally, it is shown how an effective dymic-optimizing control scheme serves as the basis for closed-loop computer control of the process."

Versa Power Systems solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks operate at intermediate temperatures 700 ? 800 °C allowing the use of metallic interconnects. Thermal expansion good matching with other stack components and cost restriction led to selecting ferritic stainless steels as interconnect material. Analytical tools and techniques were developed to understand the ferritic stainless steel behavior at high temperature while exposed to dual environment. Analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) have provided valuable information towards describing interconnect degradation in a variety of testing conditions. Several examples are presented to demonstrate interconnect oxidation and its relation with SOFC testing results.

Several occurrences of disseminated galena, including a former producing mine, are found in Pennsylvanian fluviatile sandstone of the Salmon River Basin, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Detailed study of the distribution of these occurrences has revealed that highest galena concentrations are found in sandstone overlying channel-shaped depressions in felsic basement rocks. These buried depressions, in turn, correlate in position with modern streams in areas of basement exposure. This correspondence suggests that the latter are at least partially controlled by an exhumed Pennsylvanian topography. If this is correct, then several other streams in the area, lying on basement, may be used to locate possible undiscovered lead deposits in sandstones of the Salmon River Basin.

"The use of microprocessors in metallurgy is currently increasing at a very fast rate. A large number of companies are offering systems ""off the shelf"" which are aimed at the data acquisition and process control market. There are two main drawbacks to these systems: first, they are usually quite expensive, and second, they are not completely compatible with the target metallurgical application. An alternative is to develop a microcomputer-based system "" in lab "".A dedicated microcomputer system has proved to be very useful in many metallurgical research applications(1,2)). However, in this system the analog input signals had to be transferred over long distances , and significant noise was introduced despite the use of shielded cables. In order to overcome this problem a network of low pass-filter s was designed and built. The usage of the abovementioned system brought the need to digitize the analog signals in-situ and transfer the digital signals, which are much less susceptible to noise over very long distances. This distinctly different design philosophy has become a reality with the evolution of microprocessor technology over the last few years. This design philosophy is utilized in this development."

"The stabilization of tailings has been a matter of concern to the Mining Industry for many years. In earlier times, when mines were small and only high grade ore deposits were mined, the problem was not a great one. But, more recently - during the last 30 to 40 years - the increased world demand for various metals, combined with the vast strides that have been made in the improvement of metallurgical extraction processes, have resulted in the development of lower grade ore bodies.About 30 years ago The International Nickel Company started experiments to stabilize the surface of the tailings and prevent them from becoming a dust source under certain weather conditions. The use of chemicals to form seals, covering with crushed stone, mulching with straw and some early seedings were some of the stabilizing methods tried. Results were either unsuccessful or impractical economically.In 1954 a series of experiments to establish vegetation on the tailings began. Varying degrees of success were achieved but however unsuccessful a particular scheme turned out, the attempt to find a solution was never written off. As we look back, we realize that the first significant break-through came as the result of three test plots planted in the spring of 1957. Each plot covered an area of approximately one-third of an acre. One plot was successful and persisted until it was covered up by the expansion of the tailings area in 1961.In 1960 a review of all our test plots to that date was carried out to assess the factors which effect the chance of grass being established."

"Detailed studies have been conducted on the dispersion of uranium in stream waters and sediments around various types of mineralization and hitherto unexplained anomalous areas in the Okanagan Valley and Highland region of south-central British Columbia. These studies were part of the jointly funded and planned Federal-Provincial Uranium Reconnaissance Program of the Geological Survey of Canada and the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. Statistical analysis of regional data indicates that U in stream waters and sediments varies considerably for different rock types, thus affecting data interpretation. In addition, the data demonstrate a poor correlation between U in stream waters and their associated sediments which can be largely accounted for by variations in climate and water and sediment composition. Regional trends in the distribution of U can be explained in terms of the above secondary factors as well as primary metallization phenomena.Significant correlations between U and F, and U and Mo can be explained by certain magmatic and mineral-forming processes. U shows little correlation with other base metals.The dispersion characteristics of U in the vicinity of Miocene "" basal type "" mineralization ; uraniferous pegmatite terranes, anomalous lineaments in granitic terranes and high-background volcano-sedimentary areas are discussed. Highly anomalous U concentrations in waters and sediments may not always be indicative of mineralization, and guidelines for interpretation require a sound knowledge of the geological and secondary processes operative in the area."

"Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres.The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 19505 and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. In recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors. There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

The Zinifex's Hobart Smelter uses the paragoethite process to remove dissolved Fe(III) from concentrated zinc leach liquors. This produces a residue consisting primarily of 6-line ferrihydrite (a hydrated Fe(III) oxyhydroxide), several insoluble components derived from the calcined zinc concentrate neutralization agent and other precipitated phases, such as jarosite and silica. The precipitation of 6-line ferrihydrite in the paragoethite process was studied using a laboratory-scale continuous crystallizer, and the conditions were selected to limit high levels of dissolved silica and jarosite. This approach allowed the reactor pH and the rate of precipitation to be correlated with residue solid-liquid separation, particle size, morphology, residual zinc and sulfate concentrations, and phase formation (e.g., goethite, jarosite, schwertmannite, and 2- and 6-line ferrihydrite). These studies delineated the mechanism of 6-line ferrihydrite precipitation in the kinetically controlled paragoethite process, and its inter-relationship with goethite and jarosite precipitation under conditions where 6-line ferrihydrite is favoured. Unexpectedly, the generation of a more crystalline goethite precipitate with larger "primary" particle size did not produce a residue of improved properties, as bulk aggregates dictate the physical properties of the residue and not the crystallinity. Furthermore, it is difficult to precipitate 2-line ferrihydrite or schwertmannite under existing paragoethite process conditions.

"The principles involved in the use and application of mathematical models as an aid to the development of advanced process control computer systems are described briefly. This is followed by a brief survey of known models of this kind for the simulation of mining industry processes.The main part of the paper describes a dynamic model of the flotation process developed by Canadian General Electric. Using flotation rate constants for each species of mineral and gangue, the model provides a numerical solution of the differential equations describing cell behaviour. The cell mode] is used repeatedly as a subroutine in the •over-all-plant model. The features of the cell and plant models are described.Simulation runs from the plant model show stream .assays and other indications of plant behaviour printed typically in 1-to 10-minute steps for several hours of •Operation following typical disturbances such as changes in feed rate or reagent addition rate. "The High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant for nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide production at Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) in the Philippines has been in operation since 2005 with a capacity of 10,000 t/year of nickel. Subsequent to the commissioning of the second plant in 2008, the production capacity increased to 22,000 t/year of nickel (Llerin et al., 2011). CBNC’s annual nickel production reached more than 24,000 tons of nickel in 2014. The concepts to achieve this capacity are the high availability and the reciprocally flexible operation of both plants. The availability depends on some factors, such as the control of impurities in the process and the equipment condition, to mention a few. In the HPAL process, it is not only the autoclave operating conditions that affect nickel extraction but also the impurities in the ore greatly influence it. The major element in the ore is iron and most of this iron is precipitated as Fe2O3, while the rest remains as Fe2+ or Fe3+ sulphate in solution. These ions in solution reduce the availability, so it is important to control the formation of iron ions by controlling the impurities in feed ore as well as the HPAL conditions. This paper presents the general HPAL process and the behaviour of impurities, focusing on iron behaviour in the HPAL process.INTRODUCTIONCoral Bay Nickel Corporation ProfileCoral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) was founded on April 2002, as a joint venture of four companies; namely, Mitsui Corporation (18%), Sojitz Corporation (18%), Nickel Asia Corporation (10%) and Sumitomo Metal Mining Corporation (SMM) with a controlling stake of 54%. Aside from its capital share, Nickel Asia Corporation also supplies the ore and limestone for the High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant located in Rio Tuba, Philippines, as shown in Figure 1 (Tsuchida, 2008). The objective of the CBNC project is to produce 22,000 t/year (original design) of nickel and 1,500 t/year of cobalt, as sulphide, by the treatment of nickel laterite ore which is a low grade nickel oxide ore in the Philippines (Mines and Geosciences Bureau, 2014). The sulphide product has been exported as a raw material to the SMM Nickel Refinery in Japan for 30 years. The product of this plant, a mixed (Ni/Co) sulphide, is shipped to the SMM’s Nickel Refinery in Niihama, Japan. SMM Corporation provides the technology and management personnel to the plant. Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

The paper deals with three case studies: (a) the handling of wet concentrates (5 to 8 per cent moisture) through feed bins; (b) the handling of the same product in rail cars; and (c) the handling of dry concentrates (less than 0.5 per cent moisture) through feed bins. In each case, the paper discusses the problems of rat-holing. In each of cases (a) and (c), there is a discussion on the consequent extreme variations of feed rates coming from the feeders, making automation of process control difficult to impossible. Currently available bin-flow theory and flow property tests are used as aids in redesigning the bins. The paper concludes with illustrations of the final results after the redesigned hoppers were installed and tested. There is also a discussion on the advantages of the new mass-flow bins on adjacent feeder performance.
