The computer simulator of slag cleaning in an electric furnace is based on a set of mathematical models describing heat liberation, the rate of slag reduction and gravitational coalescence of matte and metallic copper inclusions. The simulator consists of a mass and heat balances as a frame, in which the kinetic equations of the slag reduction and phase separation are incorporated. Friendly user-screen interface allows for dynamic control of process parameters in real time together with simulation of typical operations, such as furnace charging with liquid slag, solid reverts and coke, tapping out of the slag and matte, motion of electrodes and control of the transformer. The batch, semi-continuous or continuous process can be simulated. The process parameters are displayed and continuously recorded for further analysis. The computer simulator is a powerful tool for process optimization, training of furnace operators and the design of new slag cleaning installations.

DURING the past fourteen months, dust surveys have been made at thirty-six mines in the Province. These surveys are made to determine the concentration of dust in the mine atmosphere, the flow of air through the mine, the methods adopted to prevent the generation of dust, and the measures taken for its elimination. When high concentrations of dust are encountered, suggestions are given for its prevention ?and elimination wherever possible. Dust sampling is absolutely necessary to determine the effectiveness of any measure taken in the prevention and elimination of dust in the mine workings. Consequently, more time has been spent on this phase of the work than on any other. The apparatus used is the Devers circular konimeter and Zeiss microscope. At various mines, the Zeiss konimeter is used, and the dust counts taken by the two instruments have given results that are closely comparable; so much so that either instrument can be used with confidence and the results obtained will compare in accuracy with those obtained by the methods used in Ontario and South Africa. Before the Workmen's Compensation Act Amendment Act was passed in November, 1936, most of the mine operators were already keenly interested in the prevention of silicosis. This interest has been intensified at all the mines, and measures have been adopted to decrease the amount of dust in the mine atmosphere. Several operators have spent a large amount of time and money in bettering these conditions, and have met with decided success. Practically all others are adopting the known methods of prevention, suppression, and elimination of dust, that apply to their ?particular mines. To prevent the production of dust in underground workings should be the first, as it is the most important, aim, especially during the time the men are underground. An atmosphere free of dust cannot be obtained, but measures can be adopted to lower the concentration that is found? in the average mine.

"IntroductionON THE LAST DAY of December, 1951, a half-century of steel production was completed in the open hearth department of Dominion Iron & Steel, Limited, in Sydney, Nova Scotia.During that period, almost every known variation of basic steel making practice was used in working out a steel making process which would overcome the difficult metallurgical problems imposed by the use of Cape Breton coal and Wabana ore.This paper is presented as a brief review of these steel making practices, setting forth the fundamental metallurgical factors involved in their success or failure.Establishing the IndustryThe story of steel production at Sydney is closely interwoven with that of coal. The steel industry owes its inception to a desire on the part of the Dominion Coal Company, which was incorporated in 1893, to improve its marketing position by increasing sales of slack coal and providing a year-round demand for its product. Accordingly, the Dominion Iron and Steel Company, Limited, was incorporated on March 30th, 1899, with Mr. H. M. Whitney -who was President of the Dominion Coal Company -as its first President. The new Company was given powers to manufacture and process iron and steel, and to mine all minerals, including coal.A strong inducement to the industry was the bounty offered by the Dominion Government for the production of both iron and steel."

CI is not a ""program"". It is a way of doing business that concentrates on improving the system rather than finding fault and being resigned to the status quo.CI focuses on involving all employees in the decision making process and tapping their expertise to improve every facet of the business. In the past, many solutions were simple ""band-aid"" fixes treating the symptom, only to see the problem resurface again. With CI, solutions endeavour to address the root cause of problems and eliminate them permanently. Fires and explosions are not likely to originate in clean gobs above pillar faces steadily driven through a solid panel in order to effect a complete extraction. As. to the storage which such a process implies where the market is intermittent, its cost will never equal that of abandoning large pillars in a fully developed property. Much less will that cost, thanks to the big sizes obtained, ever approach that of cleaning wet and dirty crushings robbed at great expense from small pillars exposed to many years of roof pressure. Even thick seams under bad roof may be fully extracted without the help of filling material. Fatal accidents from falls of roof owing to the great height of excavations, losses in coal, and the danger from fire, have compelled operators in South Staffordshire, England, to discontinue the stall-and-pillar system at one time supreme in the district, and to successfully adopt the following plan: A retreating' longwall is run along the top coal, as the first working; the bottom coal is taken in the same manner, after the fallen roof has become sufficiently consolidated to allow the mine to be reopened. A similar plan is suggested in this paper in order to deal with the outcropping and pitching seams found in the Kootenay measures.

The dissolution behaviour of ilmenite in acid solutions has been studied by many researchers to improve the leaching efficiency. Most studies which utilized natural ilmenite from different origins resulted in different reactivity due to the alteration caused by the weathering process. Previous researchers have suggested that the greater reactivity shown by some ilmenite samples towards sulphuric acid may be a result of the mineral being relatively unaltered. In the present study a rotating synthetic ilmenite disc of 2.2 cm diameter was subjected to leaching studies in hydrochloric acid. The dissolution rates of iron and titanium from synthetic ilmenite were determined in hydrochloric acid solutions (4 M to 9 M) over a temperature range of 50 to 80°C. Results show that the rate of dissolution of both iron and titanium increased with the increase in acid concentration. However, the rates decreased with time and obeyed a parabolic rate law indicating the blockage of the surface by an insoluble product. The rates of dissolution of both iron and titanium were higher in the presence of SnCl2 and remained unaffected with time indicating the reductive role of SnCl2 which inhibits the formation of surface blocking solids. Application to natural ilmenite is also discussed.

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. Ces dernières sont les roches hôtes du diamant. Three dimensional (3D) seismic exploration has been carried out since the 1980s in the mining district of China, where it has been playing an indispensable role in the high yield and efficiency of coal mining. Unlike oil exploration, this technique uses high density seismic acquisition technology. In recent years, it has focused on wide azimuth 3D seismic acquisition. Evaluation of geometry moved away from depending on folds, azimuth and offset, toward being based upon a focus-ray beam. Conventionally, coalfield 3D seismic interpretation focused on time domain and was based on kinematics information, which is only suitable for less complex geological conditions. To achieve high-resolution processing for the complex topography and structure in coalfields, data processing shifted from poststack to prestack. The means to improve the accuracy of interpretation for complex geological conditions are 1) integration of multiple attributes and multiple disciplines, 2) combination of seismic and geological data, and 3) comprehensive combination of time domain and depth domain data. With the demand for lithological exploration, high-resolution data processing must also take into account the requirements of preserving amplitude in seismic data. Seismic attributes technology, seismic inversion technology, and dynamic tracking interpretation are key techniques in 3D seismic exploration. They greatly improve interpretation accuracy, produce better results in the goaf space description of the coal-bearing strata and coal seam structure, and effectively reduce exploration costs under complicated geological conditions. Therefore, these techniques will be the primary means employed in the future to deal with coalfield complex structure and lithological exploration.

"Ventilation is an essential component of any underground mine, playing a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, and a mine’s continuous operation. At a time when mining companies are increasingly having to move to deeper underground operations in pursuit of high-grade ore-bodies, the search is on for more efficient ventilation systems that will allow mining to be carried out at even deeper levels whilst ensuring the protection of workers and the maximisation of productivity through temperature management and the lowering of energy costs. Mining companies today are looking for innovative ways to deliver new technologies and procedures to enhance their mine’s profitability. Energy consumption by mine ventilation systems is higher than ever due to stringent specifications of underground equipment (primarily combustion engine emissions), air quality standards and mining at deeper levels which all require more powerful ventilation systems. With energy costs associated with operating ventilation systems being a mine’s second-highest cost of production after labour, finding the optimal ventilation solution is critical to a mine’s performance. Proper fan design remains a major factor in reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), which means that there are compelling reasons for making use of comprehensive factory testing at full power before fans are dispatched to site to simulate the mine’s current and future design requirements, and thus verify the fan’s effectiveness in ‘real’ conditions.INTRODUCTION A primary mine fan is considered the heartbeat of the entire mine ventilation system, drawing fresh air from the surface and providing a safe environment for miners. A ventilation system’s lack of performance often leads to a reduction in acceptable air quality levels for underground working operations and can potentially have an adverse impact on production rates."

"The Drumbo Mine is a new gypsum mine located at exit No. 32 of Highway 401 between Woodstock and Kitchener, Ontario. The flat-lying 6-foot (1.8-metre) bed of gypsum is near the base of the Silurian Salina Formation, about 380 feet (116 metres) below surface. The mine is owned and operated by Westroc Industries Limited. A shaft, 12.5 feet (3.81 metres) in diameter, was drilled and then lined with a liner-sinking technique new to this continent. The shaft was completed in the fall of 1977. Gypsum production was started in December 1978, employing a conventional room - and - pillar method of mining.Historical BackgroundA brief mention of gypsum in the Drumbo area is included in a survey of the Ontario gypsum industry by Guillet. This occurrence was discovered in 1958 when National Gypsum conducted some widespread diamond drilling. Western Gypsum Products Limited acquired leases in 1960 and concentrated a drilling program in Blenheim Township near the village of Drumbo; 79 holes were drilled in an area of 1900 acres (770 hectares). Mining rights were then acquired for 170 0acres (690 hectares). A test shaft, 44 inches (1.1 metres) in diameter, was drilled to obtain a 50-ton (45-tonne) bulk sample. This opening will be used as an emergency escape way and for ventilation.Westroc Industries Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPB Industries, has its head office at Mississauga, Ontario and operates gypsum board plants at Mississauga, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Montreal. Other gypsum mines are at Windermere, B.C. and Amaranth, Manitoba."

Canada, with one of the largest continental shelf areas in the world, has done little to evaluate its offshore unconsolidated mineral resources which include heavy minerals (gold, chromite, rutile etc.) and industrial minerals (silica sand and aggregates). During glaciation much of the continental shelf was covered with an ice sheet and later subaerially exposed with the result that glacial, glaciomarine and fluvial processes deposited sediments that may contain heavy minerals derived from onland locations. With rising sea-levels, beach and nearshore processes may have served to concentrate heavy minerals by winnowing and removing the lighter mineral components. These potentially valuable resources can be found with suitable exploration techniques such as seismic profiling and bottom sampling. Gold deposits are known to exist off the coast of Nova Scotia, and on the basis of form er beach mining, gold deposits probably occur off Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Large deposits of silica sand occur near the Madeleine Islands and it appears likely that supplies of marine aggregates are present close to urban markets or sites of future mega-projects such as oil field developments. This paper, which is based upon a review of literature and consultation with members of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources' Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining (DCOM), is the first step in assessing the Canadian offshore f or its resource potential with respect to quantified deposits, known and speculative mineral occurrences. Although this is a subjective evaluation, the potential appears promising. A more detailed resource inventory is required to provide a more certain assessment.

Since the very beginning of Polish copper mining, special consideration of sink shaft techniques through highly saturated Cenozoic rocks was required. Shaft freezing has been chosen as a method to consolidate these rocks. Due to the rock mass structure and water inflow potential, shaft sinking without freezing was considered dangerous. In the course of time, rock mass freezing technology and experience were evolved and this technology became safer and more reliable. New techniques appeared not only in the technical method of freezing, but also in the matter of designing. Computer aided techniques allow engineers to make a detailed analysis and view of freeze wall development. Nevertheless it is important to determine basic thermal rock properties. In this paper, the evolution of knowledge and engineering experience taken in Polish copper mines and current knowledge level in that matter were shown.

"Safety and health issues are and have been in the last decade a very high priority item with all parties involved in the Canadian mining industry. As a result of this high level of concern for workers' safety and health, Canadian mines are at the leading edge of environmental control technology. For the most part, the occurrence of pollutants in mines is unavoidable. Dust from mining operations, airborne radiation, gases and heat from the strata as well as gases and particulate from diesel engine emissions will undoubtedly be found to some level in most Canadian mines. A lot of work remains to be done, however, in order to bring all Canadian mines at the same level of proficiency when it comes to safety and health. Also, more work is needed in order to maintain our status as world leaders in this field.CANMET's Mining Research Laboratories (MRL) in Elliot Lake and Bells Corners, Ontario, with the cooperation of the mining industry, have contributed to improving environmental conditions in underground and surface mining and milling operations. The extent of collaboration and efforts vary widely from long-term, multi-million dollar projects between several interested parties to smaller projects involving one laboratory and a single mining operation. This paper gives examples of such collaborative efforts and potential future directions as they apply to: mine ventilation analysis using tracer gas techniques, optimization of mine ventilation network efficiency using real-time monitoring and controlled recirculation (heat saving), respirable dust and radiation sampling and control techniques, diesel emission control using regenerative ceramic filters and, finally, the control of sulphide dust explosions and resulting sulphur dioxide production."

Fluidized bed technology has been widely applied to mineral and metallurgical processes. Over the years, modeling of fluidization technology has progressed to a level at which basic design parameters can usually be defined based on empirical correlations. In addition, scale-up considerations have become better understood, and significant advances have been made in the area of computer simulation. Despite these advances, fluidization is a complex phenomenon, and modeling tools remain limited in their ability to simultaneously model both fluidization and chemical process parameters. As a result, almost all mineral and metallurgical applications of fluidized bed technology require pilot testing prior commercial scale design. This paper outlines pilot plant testing requirements and process development considerations for development of low technical risk commercial designs.

"IntroductionBasal Proterozoic quartz-pebble conglomerates are found both west of Elliot Lake, in Duncan, Jarvis and Aweres Townships, north of Sault Ste. Marie and to the east and northeast of Sudbury, Ontario. Locally, while well packed and pyrite-rich, they carry little to no uranium. Locally, they carry gold. These features generally are ascribed to variations in the source areas of the rocks.In two other areas of Canada, similar basal Proterozoic units contain quartz-pebble conglomerate beds with uranium.Sakami LakeLocation and HistoryThe Sakarni Lake uranium deposit is found in a narrow, northeast-trending, Archean greenstone belt located 95 miles southeast of Fort George, on James Bay, and 240 miles north of Matagami, Quebec (Fig. 1).The deposit was detected by Inco in 1971, during an airborne EM survey which carried a newly developed Inco spectrometer system flown at 450 feet. Ground investigation, in 1972, resulted in the discovery and sampling of quartz-pebble conglomerate which yielded assays as high as 0.19% U3O8.Extensive field exploration was conducted between 1972 and 1975. Sixty-five diamond drill holes, to a total of 13,969 metres, served to define the extent and economic potential of the conglomerates which extend over a total strike length of about eight kilometres."

Mill circumferential speed, the number of passes of pulp through the grinding chamber, media type, size and filling ratio were investigated in an attempt to determine how to effectively grind copper concentrates in a stirred mill. The stirred mill product fineness was enhanced to some extent by decreasing media size, high media filling, and an increased number of passes of the pulp through the grinding chamber. Shape also plays a major role in grinding media effectiveness, with spherically shaped media producing a finer size. The fineness of the product increases with increasing power consumption but the method of energy transfer is very important in energy utilization. The effect of the mill parameters on copper flotation was evaluated. Copper recovery was influenced by grinding media size, mill speed and the number of pulp passes through the grinding chamber.

The project to rebuild the smelting furnaces at the Anglo American - Barro Alto ferronickel smelter, located in Goias, Brasil, was initiated in September 2013. To optimize the capital cost, while maximizing furnace integrity and robustness, a design basis giving flexibility to ore composition variation was developed in order to ensure sustained nameplate production. The resulting capital efficient, fasttracked project execution was accomplished through the creation of an integrated project team of Anglo American and Hatch through FEL 3 and FEL 4 phases of the project. The integrated team addressed the project challenges through a cooperative and versatile approach, created by access to knowledge, experience and systems in both Anglo American and Hatch. The team could operate at an optimized speed of execution, as demonstrated in the FEL 3 and FEL 4 completion durations, as well as efficiently mitigating any risks of increasing cost or delaying schedule by utilizing lessons learned and team knowledge from Anglo American on the original green-field project and Platinum smelters and Hatch on similar reference ferronickel furnace rebuilds. Other critical drivers of project cost minimization and revenue loss/generation (considering production revenue of each furnace) are scheduled durations for construction, commissioning and ramp-up. The integrated team commenced construction, commission and ramp-up planning almost one year in advance of the shutdown and this paper will discuss the strategies developed to reduce risks and optimize the construction schedule to mitigate revenue loss and optimize ramp-up time to sustained operation at nameplate capacity.

"The Apex Mine is currently scheduled to be brought back into production by Hecla in the first quarter of1990. Its projected productivity rate will be exceptionally high for a small underhand cut and fill mine.The ore mined at the Apex Mine occurs within a pipe-like structure as a series of iron oxides containing both gallium and germanium, plus significant amounts of silver, zinc, lead, and copper.Ground conditions in and around the ore zone have dictated that unique approaches be utilized. To date, these have included a prototype 0.5 cu. yd diesel LHD, and the use of fibrous shotcrete in 4ft by 7ft headings, and the first pneumatically-placed cemented backfill in North America. Above all else, it is the combination of new technologies with a small and dedicated workforce which has allowed for the successful development of this ore body.IntroductionThe Apex Mine is an example of the typical small underground project. It has high grade, but low tonnage and is deposited in poor ground. In such cases, conventional planning and thinking generally results in an uneconomical evaluation and negative production decision. Fortunately, some unconventional thinking was allowed to take place during the planning and evolution of the Apex Mine development. The result now serves as an example of how such unconventional thinking can lead to the type of innovations described below.The job necessitated the development and use of new equipment and materials to execute a highly flexible underhand cut and fill mine design/pneumatic backfill concept, that must be constantly modified as different than assumed conditions become evident in and around the ore zone."

DR. G. W. RAMSEY (l): A study of our non-treatment silicosis autopsy material for the years 1940-43 inclusive, in addition to the common findings of fibrosis, nodules, and emphysema, shows marked thickening of the alveolar walls. This change is due to one or more of the following factors: congestion, edema, accumulation of both small and large monocuclear cells within the interstitial tissues and large monocuclear cells attached to the lining membrane of the alveolar sacs. This alteration in the alveolar walls, we believe, is one of the most important factors in producing impaired pulmonary function. Comparison of our first autopsy material of a case receiving twenty aluminium treatments beginning June, 1943, shows a striking change in the alveolar walls. In all areas free of silocotic nodules and fibrous tissue, the alveolar walls approach normal thickness and are free of cellular deposits. No change was noted in the old processes and none was expected. We believe that these changes in the alveolar walls were brought about by the aluminium therapy and that they constitute a major factor in the improved pulmonary ventilation noted in treatment cases.
