"The first-principles method was employed to study the adsorption of hydroxyl calcium (CaOH+) and hydroxyl (OH-) on hematite and quartz surfaces. The calculation results suggested that OH- preferred to interact with the active Fe sites on the hematite surface, whereas OH- adsorbed on the quartz surface by weak hydrogen bond. Though CaOH+ could easily adsorb on the hematite and quartz surfaces by the formation of Ca-O bond, the covalence formed on the quartz surface was apparently stronger than that on the hematite surface, meaning a stronger and more stable adsorption. CaOH+ adsorbed on quartz surface was mainly through the interaction of O-2p and Ca-3d states, and this interaction on hematite surface was weaker.INTRODUCTIONIron Increase and Silicon Reduction Technology (Yu & Duan, 2002) of hematite is mainly through the reverse flotation (silica is floated away from the iron concentrate). There are two ways to achieve this (Houot, 1983). One is to collect quartz by cationic collector directly; the other is to activate quartz by lime and then collect it by anionic collector. There are two main different views with respect to the mechanism of quartz activation: mono-hydroxyl compound theory (Fuerstenau, Rice & Somasundaran, 1965; Fuerstenau & Palmer, 1976) and surface hydroxyl precipitation theory (Hu & Wang, 1988; Wang & Hu, 1990). The former indicated the formation of the mono-hydroxyl complex is one of the two criteria of quartz flotation. The later theory, on the other hand, suggested that surface precipitation is the adsorption of active species of metallic ion on quartz surface. However, most of those researches are based on the solution chemistry of flotation and little is done at the microscopic level.In this paper, by the help of first-principles calculations, the adsorption models, bonding conditions, Mulliken charge populations and adsorption energies of hydroxyl and calcium hydroxyl ions (OH- and CaOH+) on hematite (001) and quartz (100) surfaces were investigated to find out the lime activation of quartz at atomic level, which is significant for the researches of quartz activation theoretically and practically."

"This paper presents an objective model for the estimation of fire risk potential of an underground coal mine panel by the bord-and-pillar method of mining where extraction is carried out by depillaring with caving. The fire risk rating procedure for the estimation of fire risk potential involved in the panel is described in detail. The model developed thereof is tested with the field data collected from different collieries across the country along with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness of the model. Some results showing the validity of the model are also cited here. Introduction The occurrence of fire in underground coal mine panels is quite common in India and elsewhere. These fires cause extensive loss of resources.Although substantial work has already been done by different research organizations, the problem has not been fully eliminated.The causes of panel fires depend not only on the spontaneous heating susceptibility of coal, but also on the extraneous conditions created in the panel due to the mining operations. From the studies done so far by various organizations, it is apparent that two types of parameters associated with spontaneous heating of a coal mine panel exist: intrinsic and extrinsic. Parameters related to the nature of coal, i.e., its physicochemical characteristics, petrographic distribution and mineral make-up are intrinsic, while the extrinsic parameters are related to the atmospheric, geological and mining conditions such as scope of leakage of air into the panel, wetness of mines, heat dissipation capacity of the panel, gassiness of seam, geological disturbances, method of extraction, size of panel, etc.Banerjee (1982) identified twenty-two mine parameters such as spontaneous heating susceptibility of coal, method of mining, geological disturbances, quality of overburden, degree of consolidation of coal mass, scope of accumulation of coal fines, etc. that can influence spontaneous heating in underground mines. He used the terms “high” and “low” for fire risk rating of each of these parameters. Since this approach is oversimplified, it can not determine the exact fire risk potential of an underground working."

"In recent years, an increasing number of mines in mountainous terrain have examined the possibility of placing mine waste rock into stream valleys. Pressure to utilize stream valleys as a primary location for waste disposal has increased at many of the mines currently under development or expansion. As the number of environmentally and economically ideal wastedumping sites is limited, consideration must be given to utilization of stream valleys. This raises concerns about maintaining water quality in streams passing through or beneath the dumps and potential detrimental effects to dump stability. Commonly, the flows in the streams tend to be flashy, reflecting localized intense storms and rapid runoff in steep-sided slopes within the watershed. These conditions pertain particularly to British Columbia, which is characterized by mountainous terrain and periodically intense precipitation events.The method of conveying flow through a waste dump depends on a number of geotechnical and hydrological factors, including the size, durability and transmissivity of the rock and the design stream flood flow. This paper describes the approach to the design of waste dumps in stream valfeys developed at several mines in British Columbia."

"The mining industry is facing serious long- and short-term challenges relating to uncertain commodity prices, environmental pressures, and margin compression due to rising energy costs. Energy issues, formerly treated as an operating cost, are changing as executives search for longer term solutions to deal with uncertain fossil fuel prices and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, mining executives are increasingly willing to consider introducing a proportion of renewable energy (RE) systems into the mine energy mix. This paper examines how RE can be successfully integrated at mine sites, as well as some of the benefits and barriers to their wider adoption.RÉSUMÉ L’industrie minière fait face à de sérieux défis, à long et à court terme, en raison de l’incertitude des prix des matières premières, des pressions environnementales et des compressions de la marge bénéficiaire dues à la hausse des coûts de l’énergie. Les questions énergétiques, auparavant considérées comme un coût d’exploitation, changent alors que les cadres cherchent des solutions à plus long terme afin de prendre des mesures pour contrer les prix incertains des combustibles fossiles et les émissions des gaz à effet de serre. C’est pourquoi les cadres miniers sont de plus en plus disposés à considérer l’introduction d’une proportion de systèmes d’énergie renouvelable dans l’équation énergétique de la mine. Le présent article traite de la manière dont les énergies renouvelables peuvent être introduites avec succès aux sites miniers ainsi que quelques-uns des avantages et des barrières à leur application à une plus grande échelle."

Dans le but de voir si une région comme la Gaspésie, qui a subi la derniere glaciation , se prête avantageusement à la méthode de prospection alluvionnaire, environ 800 concentrés de minéraux lourds furent prélevés dans les districts électoraux de Matane et de Gaspé-Nord. Les différentes phases minérales présentes dans les concentrés ont été examinées à la loupe binoculaire. Afin de mieux valoriser ce type d'inforrnat ion, nous avons été arnenés à expérimenter et à mettre en oeuvre des techniques multivariables adaptées au traltement d'une information semi-quantitative en utilisant le principe d'un codage logique préalable. La structuration des résultats de la Gaspésie a conduit à l'élaboration de cartes de synthèse qui constituent un support nécessaire à l'interprétatlon des répartitions plus ponctuelles des minéraux "utiles" sur le plan de la recherche minière.

So far, a large number of algorithms have been developed for the optimization of pit limits, most of which follow deterministic rules. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced, which follows a probabilistic logic using the Markov chain process. The algorithm is implemented on a transition matrix that corresponds to the 2D conventional economic block model of the mining area. The probability of mining a block is proportional to the desirability it may provide. Applying this algorithm, the probability of mining each block is obtained, and finally, the optimum pit limits are defined as the pit, which provides the highest probability of mining. In order to validate the proposed model, a numerical example is given and the results of the algorithm are compared to those of a dynamic programming algorithm. A 2D analysis of the problem is discussed in this paper. Although dealing with 3D problems requires larger size matrices, the optimization method is the same and the algorithm does not need any smoothing.

The carbon steel casings of Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) in a co¬generation plant were found to have developed cracks that originated on the inside surfaces. The HRSGs receive hot exhaust gases from the primary Gas Turbines (GTs), which are fuelled with pipeline natural gas. The GTs was initially operating without any suppression of nitrogen oxides (NOx). After being in service for about two years, some of the cracks were found to have penetrated right through the 1/4 in. thick casings. The casings are fitted with insulation on the inside (hot gas side). Examination of steel samples cut from the casing walls revealed (i) fine cracks propagating through the steel from the inside surfaces, and (ii) the presence of relatively large amounts of nitrate ion on the inside surfaces. It was concluded that the nitrate ions originated from nitric acid that was condensing on the relatively cool walls of the casings behind the insulation. Nitric acid was formed in the GT exhaust gases by the combination of water vapour (formed from combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel and from moisture in the combustion air) and nitrogen oxides (formed from nitrogen and oxygen in the combustion air).

Cameco's Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) started commercial uranium ore production in 2015. Initial mining was focused in areas of the ore body with relatively low concentrations of elements of concern (EOCs). As mining progressed into areas of the ore body that were richer in EOCs, some statistically significant behavior of certain analytes was noted in the water treatment circuits. It was ultimately found that the CLO ore body natively hosts numerous alkyl arsine compounds in addition to inorganic arsenide minerals. The alkyl arsines were found to be recalcitrant to typical adsorption on ferrihydrite, with the degree of recalcitrance associated with the degree of alkylation. A number of changes to the process circuits and water balance were performed and planned in order to inhibit the transport of alkyl arsines from the ore stream into the process water stream, and to optimize the overall site water usage. In some instances, the interactions of equipment in conjoined circuits of the process had controlling effects on the behavior of the overall circuit. Work continues to iterate upon the capital design features in order to further tighten the water balance, and to optimize water usage and operating costs.

Worldwide, we estimate that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual production of steel at a rate of 5 tons per second. Several techniques are used to protect against corrosion. Among these processes, Cathodic protection, which is regarded as the best technique to assure the protection of steel, works against this phenomenon. This is achieved either by a system of reactive anodes, or by the technique of impressed current protection or other techniques. Before any installation of cathodic protection, a preliminary study and pre-evaluation of certain parameters must be made. In the present work, we will present an example of dimensioning of an installation of cathodic protection by imposed current of a pipeline using solar energy, where we discuss the following items:•,Evolutions of the potential as well as current along the pipeline and their respective expressions deduced from the laws known as telegraphists;•,Range of protection (potential of protection along the pipeline);•,Influence of the isolation resistance of the coating on the range of protection;•,Effect of the aging of the coating and its influence on the current of protection."

Microwave (MW) energy has been used widely for several decades for communications, food processing, wood drying, vulcanization of rubber and medical therapy. Recently, this technology was found to be capable of successfully sintering ceramic and metallic powder materials, with the advantages of reducing soaking times and sintering temperatures. Unlike conventional heating, MW radiation works through the absorption of the microwave energy by a material placed in an electromagnetic field within the microwave cavity. A far more efficient heating process is produced due to the unique ability of microwaves in selectively heating a pecific part of the material with desirable dielectrical properties. This exploratory research was initiated with the objective of locally sintering the thermal barrier coating of gas turbine components using MW radiation. This novel technique may allow repairing of the component without subjecting the entire piece to unnecessary elevated temperatures and reduction of process time and cost. Y ttria stabilized zirconia was used in this study and sintering was conducted using a multimodal 1.2 kW microwave facility. Three configurations of heating setup were experimented and the preliminary results will be discussed in this paper.

There are great gaps in our knowledge, particula rly with re pect to gold in very high temperature fl uids generated at near Moho depths. But uch flu id may play an important part in Archaean pluton associated lode gold deposits whe re ultra high temperature fluids, rich in C02-CO-COS, may be associated with magma underplating and crustal assi mil ation processes (sag subduction) associated with very den e ult ramafic magma . Other environment with great potential include those of major thru t fau lt and strike slip fa ult s where large quant ities of fluids are mobilized .

LOCATION The Goudreau gold area in Ontario extends from a point a short distance south of the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway, at Lochalsh, in a south-westerly direction to the Magpie river. It crosses the Algoma Central & Hudson's Bay railway at Goudreau station, 177 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie. The area is roughly 25 miles in length by 6 miles in width. The potential gold formation is much more extensive but little prospecting has been done outside of the limits mentioned. The actual continuous area of Keewatin formation, in which gold has been found, is one of the largest in Ontario. ACCESSIBILITY Probably no mining area in a similar stage of development has had the excellent transportation facilities which Goudreau enjoys. This field is traversed in part by the main lines of the Canadian Pacific and Algoma Central railways. The Provincial Government has constructed 22 miles of road through the heart of the camp. Sixteen miles of this road is suitable for motor car traffic and several cars and trucks are in constant service.

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. "Monometallic zinc mineralization associated with marbles of the Grenville Supergroup in the Mont-Laurier Basin of Quebec is found to be stratiform and to occur (1) within limited zones of dolomitic marble and (2) more precisely along contacts between these marbles and adjacent metaclastic units. Massive sphalerite with accompanying pyrrhotite and pyrite is the prime exploration target, and commonly gives rise to good geochemical anomalies, but generally weak and ambiguous geophysical responses. Disseminated sphalerite in dolomitic marbles may signal proximity to interesting massive mineralization, although, due to weathering, this broadly disseminated mineralization may not be detected easily on outcrops. It is concluded that the western and possibly the eastern margin of the Mont-Laurier Basin constitute favourable areas for continued exploration.IntroductionThe Grenville Supergroup marbles of Ontario, Quebec and New York State host numerous occurrences of zinc mineralization (Fig. I) , several of which have been periodically mined since the beginning of this century (Fig. 2). The Balmat Edwards district of New York is the giant of this depo sit-type, with the production since 1915 of some 20 million tons of ore grading 10% zinc, and acknowledged current reserves of approximately equal tonnage and grade. At present, there is renewed interest in the potential for similar mineralization throughout the Grenville Supergroup, and this paper outlines some of the geological, geochemical and geophysical guidelines that may be employed in the search for new ore. The geologic guidelines are derived especially from lithologic and stratigraphic features which survived intense, multiphase deformation and metamorphism.Although major portions of the extensive Grenville Supergroup hold potential for zinc mineralization, the present study is confined to a known zone of mineralization in the Mont-Laurier Basin of Quebec. Concurrently, we are compiling information on the regional metallogeny of the basin so that our conclusions can be applied to areas of similar Grenville Supergroup host-rocks elsewhere."

The 1806 zone is part of a Au-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit at the Rambler Camp on the Baie \/erte Peninsula, northwestern Newfoundland, and is characterized by high Au grades (3.97 g/t), relatively low Cu and Zn grades (0.60 wt% Cu, 1.17 wt% Zn), and moderate Ag grades (27.83 g/t) at ca. 0.37 Mt ore. Gold and Ag occur as electrum and different Ag varieties including Ag-Hg ± Au alloys, miargyrite, and pyrargyrite that occur often in close proximity to electrum. Additionally, Ag-, As-, Sb-, and Sn-bearing sulfosalts are frequently observed and usually close to electrum. These textural relations strongly favor a syngenetic/magmatic origin for the 1806 zone, despite having a metamorphic overprint.

As a consequence, technology providers tend to focus on automating repetition and complexity, resulting in software that improves individual productivity while failing to address the interdependency of mining functions. For this reason, technology vendors like Gemcom are following partnership approaches with their clients, engaging corporate and operational stakeholders to better understand mining business objectives. This presentation examines some of the approaches that help foster the development of solutions that leverage the information produced during mine operations to improve downstream process control and tactical decision support.
