This paper deals with the practical problems as sociated with blasting a heated pillar remnant. This pillar remnant was the final stage in the blasting of a multi-stag e pillar blast. Production from the previous stages had produced burning sulphide ore, resulting in high rock temperatures in the final unblasted stage. This is an account of how, under difficult conditions, the pillar remnant was blasted.

I HAVE considerable hesitation in preparing and presenting this paper. These machines have been such an intimate part of my own experiences and predilections for such a long time that J would find it difficult to tell the story in an impersonal way. They have had several attractions for me. They were needed for the study of the fundamental features of modern milling, size analysis and accurate batch concentration of the very fine particles. I had been a millman once, a real operating millman, and, when I became academic". I always had the craving to link the academic laboratory with the field, as Rittinger and Richards had done. My first milling experience was with a small concentrator at a tin mine in Bohemia, forty-seven years ago. There was no assay office and the testing of our tailings was by means of a "Vanning Shovel", introduced from Cornwall by Captain Josiah Thomas, the great Josiah of Dolcoath, some fifteen years previously. This was a most effective instrument and it has always been a puzzle to me that it has not been more universally used by millmen. Later, at Freiberg, on the other side of the Erz Gebirge from the tin mine, I was introduced to the "Sichertrog", made out of wood shaped something like a very shallow boat or an elongated saucer, a most effective piece of apparatus when. the difficult technique of handling it was once achieved. Later, in the Slocan in British Columbia, my partner, the late Maurice Bucke, used a short length of flat trough or launder suspended by four wires, with which he got very satisfactory results as a small batch concentrator. In the University laboratory we had frequent need for something of this kind, and many efforts were made to solve the problem. With W. E. Johnston, we were working on the problem of gold-bearing telluride ores, which called insistently for a separation of the very fine telluride particles which existed only in minute quantities in the Kirkland Lake ores. Under this spur there finally developed the Superpanner, which is a mechanized combination of the Vanning Shovel, the Sichertrog, and the Maurice Bucke suspended launder.

"Significant increases in mill liner life and plant availability can be achieved by following guidelines that have evolved from over twenty years of practical experience with autogenous grinding (A0) and semi-autogenous grinding (SA0) mills. A0 and SA0 mill liner functions, performance criteria, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures are reviewed. Operating practices that can lead to accelerated wear and breakage are discussed.IntroductionEfforts to improve the performance of liners for autogenous grinding (AG) and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills began as soon as the modern, large-diameter versions of these comminution machines were first intalled in commercial plants twenty years ago . While concentrators with conventional circuits were typically running at 95010 or better mill availability, many of the new autogenous and semi-autogenous circuits were struggling to achieve 80% availability. Liner maintenance, which involves not only material and labour costs but also loss of production, was quickly identified as one of the major reasons for downtime.Today, liner designs and materials have evolved to the point where virtually maintenance-free liner life of two to three years is possible in autogenous mills and one year in the more severe operating conditions encountered in semi-autogenous mills. Of concern, however, is that hard-won lessons from the past sometimes seem to be forgotten or ignored during the design of new mills and the operation of existing mills. As liner suppliers, we are often confronted with performance problems that could have been avoided by applying well-publicized guidelines for liner design and materials selection.This paper provides an overview of AG and SAG mill liner functions, criteria for evaluating performance, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures. Also, operating conditions that can lead to accelerated wear and liner breakage are discussed in detail."

Subsequent to a campaign of pilot-kiln trials of firing bio-oil and natural gas, scale-up to commercial lime kilns was made using an in-house mathematical kiln model. Both dry limestone and lime mud kilns of 3.5 m OD. by 100 m length were used for bio¬oil firing simulations. Comparisons were made against natural gas firing on the basis of specific firing rate, off-gas volume, energy consumption and overall lime quality. Model simulation results indicate that conversion from natural gas to bio-oil with no productivity loss will increase energy comsumption by about 7.5% and total off-gas volume by about 8%. Alternatively, a 6% decrease in productivity would be expected if off-gas volume is maintained constant. The calculations are sensitive to deviations in the lower heating value (LHV) used in the simulations. A 5% increase in the LHV of the bio-oil, which could result from a 3% decrease in the moisture content, reduces the energy penalty to 2% coupled with a slight reduction in off-gas volume.

"The development and operation of the milling circuits treating the different Selbaie orebodies are discussed in this paper. The project is reviewed from metallurgical evaluation through construction to present operating status. The current flowsheets are described, with discussion of some unusual features.IntroductionThe Selbaie concentrator commenced initial production in August 1981, treating underground B zone copper ore in a single 1500 t/d circuit. Throughput was increased to 1650 t/d in 1985. The mill was expanded in 1986 to treat ore from the A-I zone open pit; an independent circuit was added to selectively treat 5000 t/d of copper-zinc ore. Current total mill throughput through both circuits averages 7200 t/d with the production of approximately 270 t/d of copper concentrate and 230 t/d of zinc concentrate.This paper describes the stages involved in bringing the project from initial laboratory testing to its current status as one of the most important producers of silver, copper and zinc in Quebec and a major employer in the region."

The properties required for a com-pound to form useful thermoelectric materials are described. Uranium compounds which might have these properties are reviewed. Several of these compounds have been prepared and fabricated into compacts. The apparatus used for hot pressing, and for the measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, is described. Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. THE efficiency of thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling is determined by their figure of merit, Z = a2 a/K, where a, a and K are thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, respectively. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). "Melt quality is crucial for both continuous and shape casting of light alloys and in order to improve it, removal of excessive inclusions, accumulated impurities and unwanted gases becomes necessary. To address this problem, a new multi-purpose high shear liquid metal treatment technology, based on intensive melt shearing by a rotor/stator unit, has been developed. The device ensures achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition and an efficient dispersion of gas and solid phases in the melt with minimal disturbance of melt surface, and can be used, among other things, for de-gassing and de-ironing of Al-alloy melts. Efficient degassing is achieved by dispersing each argon bubble into many small ones, which significantly increases the overall surface area of the bubbles and the time they remain in the melt capturing hydrogen before reaching the surface. This allows using much lower inert gas flow and mixing times than conventional rotary degassing. When applied to Al-alloy scrap, with accumulated iron, the high shear melt treatment speeds up the nucleation and growth of primary Fe-rich intermetallic particles, allowing a faster removal rate. Therefore it reduces processing times, increasing recycling productivity, and facilitates full metal circulation of secondary Al-alloys.INTRODUCTION Aluminium and magnesium alloys are widely considered in various industrial sectors for the purpose of weight saving (Polmear, 1995). In particular, they are used in the automotive sector, where components are mostly manufactured by high pressure die casting (HPDC) because of its simplicity and relatively low cost, but efficiency and mechanical properties are quite low compared with other processes. To date, the main focus to overcome this problem has been for improving the HPDC machinery (Dahle, 2001) but little attention has been paid to the opportunities of controlling the nature and quality of the molten metal supplied to the die. In this way, liquid metal treatment, which involves a variety of physical and/or chemical processing methods to improve melt quality prior casting, is crucial for both continuous and shape casting products."

The paper ' reviews the different sampling trains that can be used for the two major criteria for respirable dust and some of the sources of error in this dust assessment technique.IntroductionIt may be stated simply that the measurement of airborne dust in the working environment is done for one or two reasons: namely, for engineering control purposes and! or to evaluate the potential for toxicological insult arising from the inhalation of dust particles.This paper reviews the progress made in the development of dust-assessing instruments, particularly the gravimetric types designed to meet British and U.S. dust criteria , and discusses the limitations in their use for this purpose."

Coal is the mainstay of Indian energy supplies. The many-fold increase in demand for coal puts a huge pressure on augmenting production, primarily from opencast mines. The increase in production necessitates heavy blasting in overburden and coal benches of opencast mines, which poses numerous challenges in carrying out blasting operations techno-economically. Presently, the consumption of industrial explosives and accessories in Coal India Limited (CIL) has touched a whopping figure of $350 million USD per annum and CIL will be spending approximately $1 billion USD between 2012?2013 to 2014?2015 for procuring explosives and accessories. This paper discusses some of key challenges faced in various mines of CIL during blasting, where blast instrumentation at the mine level will prove to a harbinger for practicing blasting engineers. Presently, the problem of scattering in surface detonators and down-the-hole detonators affects the blast performance significantly by increased blast induced ground vibration and reduced fragmentation. The paper discusses a case study carried out at Umrer opencast project of CIL to investigate the effect of scattering by using blast simulation techniques (i.e., JKSimblast) and observing the actual blast results with the help of a high-speed camera and multi-channel high frequency data acquisition systems. The fragmentation assessment was carried out by adopting Digital Image Analysis techniques and using the granularity software viz. Wipfrag. The blast instrumentation in the case study mine resulted in improvement in fragmentation of 12.76% and a direct savings in explosives cost of 28%. Geophysical techniques such as the seismic survey method have been used at Umrer Project, CIL to characterize the rock mass using the Multi Channel Analysis of Surface Waves system for selecting the explosives technoeconomically. The minimum deck thickness for mines of CIL using drill cuttings as decking materials should be 10 D, where D is the drill diameter. The estimation of blast performance on the basis of prescribed Powder Factor (i.e., kg of explosives per m3 of rock) is technically unscientific as the criterion of a good blast depends on many factors (i.e., good heave, loose muck, muck profile angle, ease of digging, uniform fragmentation). The present paper proposes a new methodology for techno-economic evaluation of blast performance. The new methodology involves four significant factors viz. specific energy consumed by the loading equipment, charge factor, productive yield and diggability index for assessing blast performance. The use of user-friendly, accurate, reliable, rugged and handy instruments in blasting will significantly improve mine productivity, equipment efficiency and economics. The improvement in blast performance, even by 1%, will provide a significant savings of $3.5 million USD per annum to CIL. It may be concluded with high degree of confidence that blast instrumentation at the mine level will influence the mine productivity and economics.

IN THE operation of most mines, hoisting ropes, made of steel, play a very important part in the conveying of men and material between surface and the underground workings. It is obvious that, in order to maintain a maximum degree of safety, certain restrictions must be placed on the loads that may be carried by hoisting ropes, as well as on other factors that may affect the life of the rope. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest ?a new method of defining the necessary restrictions. The three main stresses in a hoisting rope are the static stress, bending stress, and dynamic stress. Crushing stresses, which are also present, are largely indeterminate and may best be allowed for by proper grooving of drum and sheaves, by adequate inspection of cross-over points, and by limiting the number of layers on the drum. They will, therefore, not be considered in this analysis. In the ?recent Ontario regulations, the limiting conditions for the main stresses are specified separately. The static stress is limited by setting a minimum static safety factor of 5.0 The dynamic stresses are allowed for by specifying a minimum capacity factor of 8.5, which has the effect of increasing the safety factor required at smaller depths in a uniform manner. The bending stresses are limited by calling for a drum-dia./rope-dia. ratio of at least 60 for ropes up to 1 inch in diameter and 80 for ropes greater than 1 inch in diameter. One disadvantage of this method is that the controls are too rigid and do not allow the operator sufficient freedom of action within safe limits.

"Today technical electro-refining processes for copper exclusively use sulfuric acid, for silver refining nitric acid electrolytes are used. Sulfuric acid is characterized by very good chemical and electrochemical stability, good conductivity and low cost. The disadvantages of sulfuric acid are the precipitation of fine-grained cathodes with smooth surfaces only by using additives like glue, thiourea and chloride. In case of silver the electrolyte is electrochemical unstable and bears the risk of the formation of toxic NOx when pH is too low. A second disadvantage is the form of electrodeposition of silver as dendrites with their removal from the bottom of the Möbius cells.This paper reports the results concerning the application of an alternative electrolyte in copper and silver electro-refining. At first the electrolyte was characterized by the determination of current density potential curves. Electrolysis experiments were performed in laboratory scale using technical anodes for copper and synthetic anodes for silver. During the copper tests the solubility of contaminations from the anodes and the amount and chemical composition of the anode slimes were determined. Moreover the influence of current density, electrolyte temperature and the effect of several additives on the precipitation and chemical purity of the cathodes were investigated. In all experiments cell voltage as well as anodic and cathodic polarization was measured and current efficiency and specific energy consumption were calculated. A comparison with the results with those of tests using conventional sulfuric acid electrolyte shows the advantages and disadvantages of both systems, additionally the technical application chances and limitations for the new electrolyte. This electrolyte enables the precipitation of smooth copper cathodes with low silver and sulfur concentrations even at lower temperatures without any additive. For silver refining the electrodeposition of compact silver sheets is possible, that can be stripped comparable to those in copper electro-refining."

"The PSI-200 is a rugged, innovative, and easy to install on-stream size analyzer. Its calibration is simple and can be done on-line, during operation. Two measurements are displayed on the panel, which are expressed as percent passing a selected size, or as any statistical diameter. These two measurements are given as two continuous 4-20 mA output signals. Operation alarms are displayed on the screen or are given as digital output signals.The PSI-200 has been used in various applications at Lakefield Research. Particle sizes ranging from 10 µm to 450 µm have been monitored successfully, with an accuracy of 1- 2%. Having the size measured continuously and reliably, optimum conditions have been established for the grinding circuit, resulting in a superior quality in pilot plant testing.INTRODUCTIONThe challenge of any operating plant is to optimize product quality, maximize throughput and minimize operating costs. The importance of particle size measurement at a grinding circuit is well recognized. Monitoring continuously the particle size and keeping the product as uniform as possible is crucial to the whole mill operation regardless of the nature of the operation.Various techniques and instruments have been developed over the years attempting to give reliable on-line size analysis data. The operating difficulties and the reliability of these equipment still present major drawbacks and none of them proved to be widely accepted.PSI-200 is a relatively new on-line analyzer. The operation is simple and of low cost and the maintenance required minimal. It measures particle size and it displays two parameters of the solids size distribution, either weight fraction of passing a certain size or any statistical diameter. Two analog outputs can be sent to a process control system and through a supervisory control loop the correct action can be taken to maintain the desired particle size (perhaps adjust the feed rate to the grinding mill)."

The Right Hon. Viscount Long, late Secretary of State for the Colonies, in his inaugural address to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in London last June said: "I am more and more? convinced by every day experience that the development and strengthening of the Empire must depend upon individual effort and action, and that it is useless to look to Governments for assistance." I am inclined to agree with Viscount Long, to this extent, that the initiative must come from individual effort, but Government assistance is necessary to put the results of that effort and action into effect. It is perhaps fitting at a gathering of this kind to remind ourselves of the part the mining industry has played, not only in the development of the British Empire but in the world at large, in the promotion of modern civilization. We do know that all human progress has been coincident with the early discoveries in the recovery and treatment of metals and, as the centuries have passed, the human race has become more and more dependent on these sciences as factors of all progress, and no nation has ever become powerful and prosperous that has lacked adequate mineral supplies, or having these, has allowed them to be exploited by other nations.

The paper reviews the back-ground leading to the invention, discusses the process chemistry and historically tracks the commercial development. Engineering and cost considerations are presented.IntroductionThe year 1994 was particularly significant in terms of the technical and business development of the INCO SO2/AIR cyanide destruction process. The year marked a decade of service to the world mining community since INCO acquired the Canadian patent in 1984. In that time period, the technology had become widely recognized as the state-of-the-art process in the field of cyanide detoxification and today we enjoy the distinction of having licensed the process at over 50 project sites worldwide. The application for the process has mostly been in the mining industry in precious metal recovery plants where it offers treatment for a wide range of waste streams such as: CIP/CIL slurries, Merrill-Crowe barren bleed solutions and/or re-pulped filter cakes, tailings pond water recycle or discharge, make-up water to flotation circuits and feed to underground backfill plants. The process also applies to the treatment of high cyanide rinsewaters from metal plating shops. More recently the process is being applied to the rinsing and abandonment of heap leach pads where it has proven to be a very cost-effective application of the INCO process. The distinct advantages that have led to the success of the process are the ability to work on slurries as well as solutions and the significantly low cost of sulphur dioxide products. The process is safe and easy to manage and uses all forms of SO2(liquid, gas or salts) which gives the process tremendous versatility with respect to geographic application. "The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However , high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives.IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million . Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R ."

"The Canadian Exploration Incentive Program (CEIP), which was announced by the federal government on May 3, 1988, promises to maintain the viability of flow-through shares as a financing mechanism which has proven to be so crucial to the health of the junior exploration sector. This month, Tax Notes examines, the main features of CEIP, which will come into play on January J, 1989. IntroductionOn May 3,1988, the Honourable Marcel Masse, Minister of Energy Mines & Resources, and the Honourable Gerald Merrithew, Minister of State (Forestry and Mines) announced the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program (CEIP). Under CEIP, the federal government will make cash payments to eligible applicants equal to 30% of eligible exploration expenses. CEIP payments will be available with respect to both mineral, and oil and gas, exploration. In essence, the program will replace the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) presently applicable to mineral exploration, and the Canadian Exploration and Development Incentive Program (CEDIP) which is presently available to the oil and gas exploration sector.This paper discusses briefly the main features of CEIP insofar as the program will affect mineral exploration. The comments herein are based on the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program Act which received Royal Assent on July 21, 1988, and on a discussion paper which was released by EM&R in May 1988. The bulk of the rules relating to the program will be in the form of regulations which have yet to be finalized. It is understood that EM&R would like to have the regulations in force by October I, 1988, when the oil and gas portion of CEIP becomes effective. (The rules relating to mineral exploration will become effective January I, 1989)."

"This paper deals with the varions methods for the rapid Joading of unit trains which are being: used by ore procossors to move their product to dock-s1de storage facilities or their ultimate customer. Some of the techniques that have been used include (1) volumetrie loading, both in motion and static, (2) batch weighing into moving cars and (3) batch weighing into cars that have been stopped. Particular emphasis shall be placed on the two systems now in use at the Adams Mine facility of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation and at Cliffs of Canada's Sherman Mine. Typical ""turnaround"" times, loading rates, types of cars, weighing accuracies, material handling concepts and maintenance considerations shall be discussed."

WE should indeed feel proud and satisfied with the accomplishments of our great mining and metallurgical. industries during the past quarter of a century, for they have vastly exceeded those of any previous period of like duration. 1 feel that Canadians, and particularly those in the mining industry, should know more concerning the important role our industry will be called upon to play in the present war. Our Empire metals will be an outstanding factor in this conflict. Every man connected with the industry, from the lowest paid labourer to the highest official, can feel proud that his every effort results in more and more production of those metals which will help to give the Empire supremacy. He can feel assured that, by sticking to his job and by putting his whole heart into his work, he is making a contribution towards winning the terrible struggle in which our Empire and our gallant French allies are engaged. These two great peoples will have ro bear the brunt of the task of ridding the world of the menace of those who would set up force. and might in the place of right and justice in the settlement of international affairs. As the present European crisis developed, it became evident that they, alone, would have to accept the challenge and fight the enemies of Democracy to ensure the survival of the small nations of Europe and, indeed, of the great democratic powers themselves. The acquisitive eye of the German leaders had looked far ahead and they had realized that the eastern European states, already reeming with population, were no solution to Germany's space problem; but they thought that these states could be gobbled up one by one, each in turn strengthening Germany's might until it could successfully challenge France and England. No glimmer of doubt dimmed their vision. The two great democracies once subdued, they could proceed to seize Canada and the United States. This clone, they would have an abundance of room to expand, as well as those resources-grain, timber, cotton, nickel, iron, lead, zinc, copper, gold, silver, sulphur, oil-which German statesmen have always coveted. Von Ribbentrop, von Alvensleben, Bernstorff, and many others have made exhaustive studies of our resources. German rulers had been told that the French would not fight and that the British could not. They knew of the rust on the British war machine. There was no cloud in the sky; their fond dream was at last robe fulfilled.

In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered.
