The Uranium Province of Lagoa Real is located in the mid-south region of Bahia State, Brazil. Uranium is the only mineral wealth, occurring mainly in the form of uraninite. The region has been searched for uranium since 1971 and 35 anomalies were detected, distributed over 1200 km2. Seven are now taken as deposits, accounting for reasonably assured resources of 100.000 tons of U3O8. This paper describes the geological aspects of the area, the exploration and mining activities done so far by the state company INB and the perspectives for the near future, when a raise in the country?s uranium demand is expected.

The McClean Lake Mill is located approximately 850 kilometres north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and is operated by Orano Canada Inc. (Orano). The mill was designed to process high grade uranium ores, and a multi-year expansion was completed in 2014 to increase its production capacity to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum. The mill also underwent various upgrades to allow it to safely transition from processing low grade ores to high grade ores from the nearby Cigar Lake Mine. During the metallurgical test work on the Cigar Lake ores, it was identified that some ore zones of the deposit have a propensity to generate hydrogen gas during acid leaching. Hydrogen is a volatile and explosive gas, which poses obvious safety concerns in the leaching circuit. Uranium processing is further complicated by the fact that an oxidant in the form of oxygen gas or hydrogen peroxide is required to regenerate iron in the leach, which further increases the risk posed by hydrogen gas. During 2013 Orano and its consultant Hatch designed and engineered several novel upgrades to the leaching circuit to mitigate the risk of hydrogen gas evolution in the process. Best in class technology was utilized in addition to control and operating strategy changes to ensure the leaching circuit could be safely operated with ores that evolve hydrogen gas. This paper reviews the design concepts and modifications implemented on this unique and challenging project, and also provides an update on the operational reality of hydrogen in the circuit gained through five years of operational experience with hydrogen evolving ores.

General Summary THIS paper attempts to describe in a preliminary and general manner the nature of certain copper discoveries now being developed by Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, in Holland township, in the interior of the Gaspe peninsula. Some copper mineralization appears to have been known here at the time of the earliest French explorations, was rediscovered in 1921, and has been under intermittent development by Noranda Mines since 1938. In the last two years discoveries have enhanced the picture so that the deposit now promises to develop into one of the important Canadian copper producers. As ideas are constantly changing with continuing development, any picture given now is very partial and tentative and must be subject to future revision. The nature of these copper occurrences differs from others known in eastern America. In many respects they have unique features but they are most closely akin to some copper deposits found away from the intrusive rocks in the porphyry copper districts of the western United States. The most important orebodies are replacement deposits in a limestone horizon in which the ore gangue is converted to skarn. These lie at considerable distances from any known intrusive but seem to have been derived from a buried stock of granite that intrudes the sedimentary rocks of Lower Devonian age. This intrusive has produced alteration effects in the overlying rocks that may afford a key to locating other ore areas in the Peninsula.

A considerable part of the sulphuric acid requirements of the Aluminum Company of Canada's Arvida smelter comes from the burning of 180-200 tons per day of zinc '"'sulphide concentrates in a 22-ft.-diam-eter fluidized bed roaster. The plant and its operation were fully de-scribed in a publication that appeared about ten year ago (1). A simplified flowsheet of the roasting and gas-cleaning sections of the plant is given in Figure 1. The wet zinc sulphide concentrates are un-loaded into a pug mixer, by means of a Pay loader, and mixed with water in a mixing tank to make a slurry of 80 per cent solids. The slurry is transferred to a .feed tank and then introduced into the roaster at a point four feet above the constriction plate, which is the height of the settled bed of zinc calcines. Several inorganic reagents and organic polymers were tested as depressants in the single mineral flotation of ultrafine iron oxide and hydroxylapatite with Dowfroth 250 as a frother. It was observed that the inorganic reagents and the low molecular weight polymers generally caused dispersion of the ultrafine particles, and consequently their recovery into froth products more or less equaled the recovery of water. On the other hand, the high molecular weight polymers caused different degrees of flocculation of the ultrafine particles, and their recoveries were much lower than the recovery of water. These observations pointed to a need to re-define flotation depressants in fine particle flotation. The traditional definition of a flotation depressant, i.e., to make particle surfaces hydrophilic by forming a hydrophilic film and/or by removing collector and activator coatings, is sufficient for relatively coarse particles. However, to prevent fine and ultrafine particles from floating, a successful depressant should not only make the particles hydrophilic, but also enlarge the particle sizes so that they do not enter the froth product by mechanical entrainment. Polymeric depressants are ideal for these purposes. The different schemes to use polymeric depressants in the selective flotation of fine and ultrafine particles were discussed These schemes involve the integration of the polymeric depressants into other size enlargement processes such as shear flocculation, oil agglomeration, etc., for hydrophobic particles.

A FEW years ago the writer had the privilege of examining a piece of apparatus in the Forest Products Laboratory of McGill University which engaged his attention. The Forest Products Laboratory has an excellent installation of wood-grinding machinery, and the officials in charge were naturally interested in acquiring means for estimating the fineness of various wood grinds. The problem was referred to Dr. O. Maass ( l ). Dr. Maass designed a piece of equipment to measure the surface of a wood grind and derived an equation applicable in calculating its value, as follows : After inspecting this apparatus, the writer was disposed to believe that, with some modifications, Dr. Maass' ingenious idea might be utilized to measure the surface of mineral powders. Obviously, some difficulty would be found in maintaining an even suspension of mineral particles of high specific gravity compared to that of wood pulp. The writer will not bore the reader with a description of the various machines built and tried out. Some of these were satisfactory enough to obtain some valuable information, and to bring to light a difficulty which threatened to bring the investigation to an abrupt ending. For the mineral quartz, it was found that Kin the formula above stated was not a constant.

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007. The mineral claims covering the Dumont deposit are currently held 98% by RNC and 2% by Ressources Québec.The Dumont project is located in the province of Quebec in the municipalities of Launay and Trécesson approximately 25 km by road northwest of the city of Amos, 60 km northeast of the industrial and mining city of Rouyn-Noranda and 70 km northwest of the city of Val d’Or."

The Bachelor Lake gold deposit occupies an ESE-trending, SW-dipping, silicified shear zone with hematitic alteration. It transects NE-trending, steeply dipping Archean volcanic formations and the O'Brien granite. Major W-SW and N- NE-trending faults have affected the ore zone and the emplacement of the granite intrusions. Movements along the WSW set may have opened the fractures filled by the mineralization. Gold is generally associated with pyrite. Its source, whether a granitic pluton or a volcanic sequence, is undetermined, but the granite probably provided the concentrating mechanisms through heat and hydrothermal solutions.

The Ontario Committee on Taxation is making a comprehensive study of taxation in the Province of Ontario, and in this connection has received representations concerning mining taxation from a number of interested parties. Some of the more important recommendations on mining taxation are reviewed in this article. THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission's development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

The aim of this paper is to show the results of the study that relate the variations of the bismuth content in the Caraíba Metais' electrolytic copper with the main electrolysis' process variables as electrolyte flow rate and temperature, anode's impurities content, electrolyte composition, current density, etc and their combinations and factors like cathode washing, blend of materials entering rod plant's furnace, analytical methods, shot-circuit inspection, etc. Also, the methodology considered arsenic, bismuth and antimony mass balance in the electrolysis and their electrolyte's molar ratio relations as well as bibliographic references of refineries that operate in similar conditions. The results showed the circumstances with the major probability of causing bismuth content increasing in the electrolytic copper and the main operating conditions that have to be fixed for having less bismuth variation and lower content in the electrolytic copper.

"During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."

Abstract - The Archean Superior Province craton and the Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen are major geological sub-divisions of the southern Canadian Shield and account for much of the metallic mineral production of North America. The Superior Province experienced a mainly Archean history involving several cycles of volcanism, plutonism, and tectonism, primarily in the Neo-archean but also including Meso-archean and Paleo-archean cycles as well. Superior Province consists of northern and southern high-grade gneiss sub-provinces and a broad central region of alternating greenstone-granite and metasedimentary belts. The sub-provinces may represent tectonic terranes assembled in the Archean by accretion processes similar to those of some Phanerozoic orogens. Most of the mineral deposits, including VMS, intrusion-related, and lode gold deposits occur in the greenstone- granite sub-provinces where they were formed in an interval of 100 million years or less around 2.7 Ga. The Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen comprises supracrustal sequences deposited in fault-controlled epicratonic and rifted margin settings developed on and about the Superior craton. Deposition of the ~2.4 Ga Huronian Supergroup and its paleoplacer uranium deposits in the eastern Penokean Orogen, and their pre-2.2 Ga deformation, were probably unrelated to the deposition of the ~2.1 Ga Marquette Range and Animikie groups and their major taconite iron formations in the west. However, these sequences were deformed together during the ~1.85 Ga Penokean Orogeny which resulted when an assembly of island arcs containing VMS deposits, the Wisconsin magmatic terrane, collided with the Superior block and its Paleoproterozoic cover. The Sudbury structure with its world class Ni-Cu-PGE ores was also formed at this time, possibly triggered by meteorite impact. Metallogenic patterns in the Paleoproterozoic rocks were controlled by a complex interplay of factors including tectonically controlled variations in deposition and deformation, distribution of mineralization in the Archean basement, and oxyatmoversion, the transition from anoxic to oxygenic atmospheric conditions that occurred during the deposition of these sequences.

Sumitomo Toyo Copper Smelter and Refinery was commenced in 1971, and its production capacity of sulfuric acid was 550tpd at the beginning. In 2001 Toyo Copper Smelter and Refinery projected to expand its copper production capacity to 450,000tpy, and now the project is still in progress. To achieve this expansion project, 4,000tpd of sulfuric acid production capacity is necessary to the acid plant. So as a part of this project, the construction of the new converting and absorbing line and the improvement of the existing converting and absorbing line were carried out from 2001 until 2005. Then the production capacity of these 2 lines has already reached the target, 4,000tpd of sulfuric acid. Moreover, at the design of the new line, we adopted several latest technologies and materials in order to construct the world's leading acid plant. Basing on the operation performance of the new line, we have improved the existing line in 2005. Predicting the geomechanical response of the shale gas material during hydraulic fracturing operation in the field needs better understanding of their geomechanical behaviour under laboratory testing. Anisotropy is considered as a critical factor during investigation and analysis of deviated boreholes, borehole stability, stress-strain and strength behaviour, generation and propagation of fracture and fluid flow. In this study, compressive elastic modulus (Ec) of the Montney shale has been investigated in two perpendicular directions: unconfined compressive strengths test was conducted on the Montney sample to measure its Ec in the vertical direction. This value then was compared to the Ec value in the horizontal plane (i.e. foliation plane) which was previously measured throughout a Brazilian test by Keneti and Wong (2011). From the results, the representative values of Ec in the vertical and in the horizontal directions were found as 25 GPa and 40 GPa, respectively. Computer tomography technique was also employed for the experimental data interpretation.

In 2016 at Głogów Copper Smelter KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., after shutting down the shaft furnaces new FSF was launched. Currently, it is the only smelter with two direct to blister flash smelting furnaces in operation. The main difference between the vessels are the dimensions and production capacity. The new furnace design output is about 30% higher compared to the old flash smelting furnace working for 40 years. The paper presents a comparison of both FSFs operation, differences in technology and the way to optimize the process to maximize efficiency. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. is the only company in Poland (eastern part of Europe) that extracts and processes copper ores. It is located in the south west of Poland and this region is called the "Copper Basin”. KGHM PM S.A. consists of three underground mines: Lubin, Polkowice-Sieroszowice, Rudna, concentrator plants, a tailings pond plant, three copper plants: Legnica, Głogów and Cedynia wire rod plant in Orsk. The publication relates to the operation of the furnaces in Głogów (the plant in Głogów consists of Głogów 1 and Głogów 2 which form integrated smelting and refining facilities). In 2016, after closure of the shaft furnaces technologies in the Głogów 1, a new FSF commenced operation. The simplified process flow sheets are given in Figure 1 and 2. Technological schemes are similar, but due to the differences in them, they will be discussed separately. Głogów 1 Enriched ores are discharged and directed to the feed preparation plant. Delivered concentrates are built up on the three bedding aisles in appropriate proportions. The concentrates are distributed in even layers in one of the three aisles. Aisle emptying is done with a blending machine which cuts across the concentrate layers and collects thus blended material, sending it via belt conveyors to a storage bin. From the cross- blending machine and conveyor assembly, the mixture of concentrates is directed to drying in the steam dryer. Part of the charge is directed to the FSF and part to the roaster for carbon elimination. Known in the world roasters are used to eliminate sulfur compounds or arsenic. In the case of KGHM deposits, the aim of the process is to reduce the energy value of the feed by eliminating carbon and converting sulfur from sulfide to sulfate. Changing the nature of exothermic to endothermic material is crucial in the case of furnace operation with design performance. Roaster is a separate furnace with an innovative character.

"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

Introduction Core drilling of the bituminous sands of northern Alberta has been carried on by the Mines and Geology Branch, Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of the Director, W. B. Timm. This was part of the Dominion Government's wartime investigations, which included an agreement with Abasand Oils, Limited, for the study of commercial possibilities of obtaining oil from the bituminous sands. The drilling programme, commenced in 1942 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, was continued in 1943 and subsequently by Boyles Bros. under contract with the Mines and Geology Branch. Several areas have been investigated and one of these, the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, ' herein described, is of special importance in that it contains a sufficiently rich and large deposit of bituminous sands and bitumen beds to warrant consideration of commercial developments for the production of oil. The Steepbank Area, East Side of Athabaska River The Steepbank area, on the east side of Athabaska river in township 92, about twenty-two miles north of Fort McMurray, was selected for drilling in 1942 because previous investigations by Ells indicated it was one of considerable promise both from the standpoint of having reasonably rich bituminous sands under relatively light overburden and also having an excellent tailing disposal and plant site for large-scale operations in proximity to Athabaska river. The drilling done in 1942 and 1943 was largely exploratory, and, when it was found that the southerly part of township 92 had only low-grade material, closer drilling was done in 1944-45 in the richer, more northerly part.

Surface limitations and a need for more direct transportation routes require serious consideration be given to the development of underground construction works in geotechnically unfavourable conditions. Due to geographical and logistical limitations, the construction of these underground works is restricted to difficult ground conditions that require temporary pre-support before excavation in order to avoid tunnel collapse or severe surface settlement. One type of pre-support is the umbrella arch system, which has been gaining popularity due to cost and time commitment in comparison with other pre-support systems (e.g., ground freezing). The umbrella arch system has been employed with significant frequency around the world, yet without a complete understanding about the mechanical response of the system. As such, literature has found the temporary support system to be both under and over designed with regard to safety and/or economical impact. The authors of this paper have made three major contributions to increase understanding of the umbrella arch system and to help optimize the design process. Firstly, the authors have developed nomenclature in order to categorize and define umbrella arch elements and systems, which also stimulated the creation of the empirically driven Umbrella Arch Selection Chart. Secondly, the authors have established a design methodology that is primarily based on advanced numerical modelling techniques to aid in the optimized design of the umbrella arch arrangement for site specific conditions. Thirdly, the authors have developed a semi-analytical model for umbrella arch systems employed in squeezing ground conditions by incorporating elastic foundation theory as well as convergence confinement theory. These three major contributions to such a widely employed tunnelling pre-support system will be introduced and explained in detail, and will include discussion of how each is incorporated in the complete tunnel support design process and throughout the construction and monitoring phase of a project.

The structural changes which take place in polycrystalline copper under the action of alternating cycles of torsion stress were studied, using the optical microscope and the X-ray dif-fraction camera, and an attempt was made to correlate them with changes in the shape of the cyclic stress-strain curve. It was found that the period of work-hardening was less than one per cent of the fatigue life, and that persistent surface marking, which are assumed to be incipient or actual microcracks, occur upon completion of work-hardening. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed considerable grain distortion at the completion of work-hardening in specimens cycled at a high strain amplitude. This distortion became progressively less as the strain amplitude de-creased. Mechanisms for the completion of work-hardening and the formation of microcracks are discussed.
