"The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."

History Due to its strong affinity for oxygen, aluminium as an element was isolated only after many other rarer metals had been prepared and studied. It was just over one hundred years ago that two scientists, Hans Christian Oersted and Friedrich Wohler, produced the first few pellets of aluminium and determined its physical properties. These early investigators used metallic potassium as a reducing agent. Later, St. Claire Deville, by using sodium instead of potassium, improved the yield in the reduction and produced some pounds of aluminium. From a figure of about $110 per pound in 1855, the price had fallen to about $4 per pound by 1886. In that year, a very important discovery was made independently by Charles Martin Hall in Oberlin , Ohio, and Paul . Heroult in France. Stated in its simplest terms, the discovery of Hall and Heroult was that aluminium could be produced by electrolyzing a solution of the oxide in molten cryolite. The application of the Hall-Heroult process made the metal immediately available in commercial quantities and, by 1900, the price had fallen to 23 cents per pound. The growth of the industry in the past fifty years is well known, and is outside the scope of this paper. It is, perhaps, not generally known that aluminium was first produced in Canada at Shawinigan Falls in 1901. Since that time, production has been continuous at one or more smelters in the Province of Quebec. The largest of these smelters, which is also the largest aluminium smelter in the world, is at Arvida, Quebec, on the Saguenay river. A large power potential and access to ocean shipping were the two principal reasons for the establishment of aluminium production facilities in the Saguenay district. It is interesting to note that the aluminium industry, as a large user of power, took an active part in the early industrial development at Niagara Falls and Shawinigan Falls, and is now repeating the process in the Saguenay valley.

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. Atara mixers have been installed with successful performance in full scale tanks containing nickel-copper concentrate slurry (Falconbridge) and gold cyanide leach pulp (Dome"

"An acidification circuit was installed and operated at the Agnico-Eagle Silver Division refinery in Cobalt, Ontario, for treating ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution with the purpose of recovering its cyanide and metal values. The acidification circuit was designed from parameters determined experimentally at CANMET. Available refinery equipment was assembled according to a flowsheet developed by Agnico-Eagle Mines. The process produced a regenerated cyanide solution containing >15 g/L of free cyanide, which was used for leaching gold ore at another Agnico- Eagle operation. It was estimated that the value of the recovered cyanide offset the treatment cost. BackgroundThe Silver Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines needed an economic and effective method for disposing of ~300 m3 of a concentrated cyanide waste solution that had remained in the plant after the operation was shut down in 1989. As a result of extensive recycling and evaporation, the solution had become practically saturated with metals, cyanide, thiocyanate, sulphate and other components, and was, therefore, an environmental liability for the company. A partial analysis of the solution is presented in Table 1. Initially, the use of cyanide destruction methods was considered by Agnico-Eagle, but the estimates indicated a considerable cost with no credits to be gained. A research project carried out by CANMET showed that a simple procedure consisting of acidification, filtration and reneutralization was the most attractive option, because it enabled the recovery of a substantial portion of the cyanide. Furthermore, the metals would be recovered in the form of a solid precipitate. The research showed that conventional AVR was not applicable because of excessive cyanide degradation and low HCN volatilization obtained with this particular solution (Riveros et al., 1996). This paper describes the procedure used to treat the concentrated cyanide waste solution and the operating practices of the large-scale acidification circuit run at the Agnico-Eagle refinery."

"According to the geometrical characteristics of triangular meshes, Triangular Mesh Split Model (TMSM) based on a finite element method is proposed to simulate cracks propagation of fractured rock. With TMSM, stress intensity factors at the tip of cracks are obtained by far-field contour integral. Meanwhile, vector cross multiplication is adopted to fix the cracking unit, and maximum circumferential stress criterion is used to determine the crack propagation angle. Then crack dynamic propagation simulation is realized through local mesh split or node movement at crack tip. With this method, the crack can split apart a unit or extend along the mesh boundary, so the crack could extend along an arbitrary path and is not restricted by the initial mesh. The applicability of the mesh split algorithm is verified by the crack propagation examples of wing crack and multi-fractured rock mass with holes. The results show that this method not only has higher accuracy of fracture parameters calculation, but also can accurately simulate the crack initiation and propagation of rock under complex stress state such as tension, compression and shear. In addition, the far contour integral is introduced to determine the crack tip stress intensity factor and there is no need to reconstruct a singular element at the crack tip or to intensify the meshes. Compared with the existing mesh reconstruction algorithm, this method significantly improves the computational efficiency.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, rock is neither the full continuum, nor entirely discrete body, but rich in geological defects, such as joints and cracks. A large amount of geotechnical engineering practice shows that most fracture of rock is closely related to the internal joints, cracks and crack expansion (Horii et al., 1985; Wong et al., 1998). Although the classical theory of fracture mechanics established the theoretical foundation of crack initiation, propagation, so far it is still extremely difficult to characterize the propagation of airfoil-typed crack and the interference problem of multiple cracks. Up to now, the micromechanics mechanism research of crack propagation of fractured rocks has still been a hot research topic of rock fracture mechanics."

Abstract Canada has opened up a geological province in ?Western Canada which offers a new .stimulus to oil exploration geophysics. The problems of instrumental technique, interpretation, and logistics involved in the exploration of this new territory are presented in this paper and some of the efforts being undertaken to overcome them are discussed. The scope of this programme, its possible trend and extent, especially when viewed .against the background of the exploration effort in the United States, is touched upon. Introduction The science of earth physics was first applied to the search for oil on this continent some twenty-five years ago when torsion balance and refraction seismic methods were initiated in the Gulf Coast area of the United States. Since that time advances in the various branches of the science have been sporadic as new fields for their use opened up in the search for deep salt domes as well as less well-defined geological structures; in the application to well logging as part of the exploitation of petroleum; and in underwater surveys, aerial surveys, etc. In the present paper, attention has been concentrated only on the Western Canada plains area because of the recent remarkable growth of geophysics as an oil finding technique in this region. The other prospective oil areas of the West Coast and the Eastern Provinces of Canada are at present of minor importance, although they will undoubtedly receive increasing consideration in the future as accessibility to markets becomes a major factor and more improved geophysical and geological techniques are developed. A vast province in Canada, covering some 655,000 square miles of prospective oil territory (approximately one-half of the prospective oil area in the United States), has provided the new sphere of activity for geophysics (see Figures 1 and 2). Included in this area are immense inaccessible, uninhabited frozen regions which pose a new problem in logistics and operational techniques.

THE ultimate purpose of the Chemical Manufacturer is to produce consumer products which can be sold to customers. Such production and sales can be continued only if the operations yield a profit to the manufacturer and if the products meet the requirements o the consumer--bath parties to the transaction must be satisfied. There are vast numbers of consumer products, made by chemical pro-cesses. The production of some of these ultimate products may involve the use of several intermediate chemicals, applications of few or many different processes, and the utilization, somewhere in the series of operations, of a variety of raw materials. On the other hand, some ultimate products have a very simple chemical history between raw materials and end products. There are no chemical products in use which are completely independent of the mineral industry. For many, the association is direct and obvious; for others, it may be indirect and even obscure. Analyses of the process and raw-material ancestry of a very large number of consumer products would suggest that many products are derived from Industrial Mineral products directly, that there are many in which the connection is indirect, and that there are only a few products with which industrial minerals are not in some way or other associated. The vast majority of the more important chemical products, and especially the basic chemicals from which other products are made, are directly dependent for their production upon Industrial Minerals or their derivatives. In the preceding part of this paper, for each raw material mentioned some references have been made to the leading chemical products based on this material. This, however, is only part of the story, because in most cases the consumer product can be made from any special raw material mentioned only by the use of other materials or chemicals made from them. The production of consumer chemicals is really possible only through an intricate interlocking of processes, materials, and apparatus.

"Rare Earths have become critical for our energy and materials driven society. While primary production must ramp up to fill growing demands, the recycle of these strategic elements must also be initiated. This paper will outline the potentials of and metallurgical technologies employed for Rare Earths recycle from various secondary sources.INTRODUCTIONWhen investigating the recovery of rare earths from secondary sources it is necessary to understand the nature of the sources to be processed. As of 2009, the USGS reports the distribution of rare earths by end use, in decreasing order, was: chemical catalysts 22%, metallurgical applications and alloys 21%, petroleum refining catalysts 14%, automotive catalytic converters 13%, glass polishing and ceramics 9%, rare earth phosphors for computer monitors, lighting, televisions 8%, permanent magnets 7%, electronics 3%, and others 3% (USGS, 2011). Additionally, it is reported that the amount of recycling was quite small and consisted primarily of rare earth magnet scrap, although with the sharp increase in the price of rare earths, and the potential shortage in supply, focus in this area is continually growing. Thus, the opportunities, whether realistic or not, are extremely vast in the recycling of rare earth containing materials. The following subsections will present methods proposed for the recycling of rare earths based on the feed material type.RECYCLING OF RARE EARTH MAGNETSCurrently, investigations are ongoing in the area of recycling production scrap and end-of-life materials in the rare earth magnet industry. The following techniques illustrate potential methods for the recovery of rare earths from secondary RE magnet sources.Recycling of Rare Earth Magnet Sludge by Selective ChlorinationDuring the production of neodymium magnets, a by-product of production is the so called “magnetic sludge”. This by-product contains high amounts of neodymium, thus a process for the recovery of Nd has been proposed. In this process the Nd present is selectively chlorinated/distilled by the addition FeCl2 via the following reactions."

"In this work, the effect of pre-strain rolling on the annealing behavior of friction-stir welded 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was studied. To this end, the as-welded material was rolled to 10 or 20 pct. of thickness reduction prior to the standard post-weld T6 heat treatment. Three rolling directions were the 3-mm thick sheet were considered: along the welding direction, perpendicular to the welding direction, and at the angle of 45° to the welding direction. At relatively low pre-strains (10 pct.), the annealing behavior was found to be very sensitive to the rolling path, and rolling along the welding direction was most effective in suppressing abnormal grain growth. On the other hand, increasing the pre-strains to 20 pct. of thickness reduction inhibited abnormal grain growth irrespective of the rolling path.INTRODUCTION Heat-treatable wrought Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used due to attractive combination of strength, ductility, excellent corrosion resistance and low cost (Polmear, 2006). To provide the optimal balance of mechanical properties, these materials are typically commercially available in appropriately work- and precipitation-hardened conditions (Polmear, 2006). During conventional fusion welding, however, the prior strengthening effect is totally lost due to elimination of the work hardened structure and dissolution of the strengthening precipitations. An innovative friction-stir welding (FSW) technology may partially overcome this problem. Due to the solid-state character of this process, which involves very large strains, the welded material is characterized by fine-grained microstructure with moderate-to-high dislocation density, and thus the prior work hardening effect may be preserved or even enhanced (Threadgill et al., 2009; Mishra & Ma, 2005). However, heat input associated with FSW inevitably leads to dissolution and/or coarsening of strengthening precipitates, thus giving rise to the undesirable material softening. In an attempt to restore the strength of the friction-stir welded material, the standard T6 post-weld heat treatment has been applied, but this approach was found to lead to abnormal grain growth (Malopheyev et al., 2016; Mironov, 2013, Mironov et al., 2015)."

"The Red Rose mine is in the Rocher Deboule mountains about 8 miles east of Skeena Crossing and a like distance south of the town of Hazelton; the most northerly settlement on the Prince Rupert line of the Canadian National railway and 177 miles northeast by rail from Prince Rupert. The mine workings are on the north side of Balsam or Red Rose creek; a tributary of Juniper creek that drains via Kitseguecla river into the Skeena near Skeena Crossing. A truck road 11 miles long extends from Skeen a Crossing (elevation 650 feet) to the Red Rose mill (elevation 4; 100 feet). The mine workings lie between 5; 600 and 6; 300 feet above sea-level. Mine and mill are connected by a 1-mile aerial tramway and a tractor trail.The Red Rose claims were staked about 1910 by prospectors attracted to the district by the construction and near completion of the railway between Prince Rupert and Jasper. For a number of years interest centred in prospecting a sheared zone exposed in a ravine between elevations of 5,425 and 5,825 feet. Several adits were driven and some high gold assays were obtained in vein quartz in the sheared zone, but this work did not develop sufficient ore and the property finally closed down. In the early twenties of this century tungsten minerals were discovered in the northern extension of the vein, but nothing was done to test this deposit. Finally, in 1940, spurred by the wartime demand for tungsten, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada drilled the tungsten-bearing vein, and although results were none too encouraging, underground work was begun in June 1941. The latter work disclosed substantial amounts of ore. A small mill, subsequently enlarged, began operation early in January 1942 and by the autumn of 1943 some 1,194,000 pounds of tungsten concentrate had been recovered. Mining ceased in November 1943 because of orders from the Metals Controller that no more shipments would be permitted."

"This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. (Burstall et al, 1953, Davison et al., 1960, Tataru, 1973, Laskorin et al. 1978, Hosking, 1984, Riveros and Cooper, 1987 and Palmer et al., 1988)The main incentive for this work was the fact that resins have several characteristics that are quite different from carbon, which make them potentially more attractive substrates for the recovery of gold. Expanding world economic prosperity, probable peaking of conventional petroleum production in the coming decades and environmental concerns require efforts to increase the efficiency of, and the development of alternatives to, petroleum-based fuels used in automotive transportation. In January 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and the U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) of the "Big Three" traditionally-USA-based automakers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors, formed the Freedom Cooperative Automotive Research (FreedomCAR) Partnership to fund high-risk, high-payoff research into advanced automotive technologies with the potential for eventually lowering the USA&apos;s nearly complete (95%) dependence on petroleum, 55% imported, for its transportation fuels. FreedomCAR replaced the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) which existed from 1993 to 2001. In January 2003, the energy-supply industry joined with the FreedomCAR Partnership forming the FreedomCAR and Fuel Initiative (FC&FI) to develop the technologies needed for the mass production of fuel-cell vehicles using hydrogen as fuel and the infrastructure needed to deliver the hydrogen to the consumer. The goal is to enable the automotive and energy-supply industries to make commercialization decisions in 2015 on large-scale introduction of such vehicles and on developing the infrastructure beginning in 2020. In addition to work on fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure, the FC&FI conducts research on technologies with the potential for nearer-term energy efficiency and environmental benefits, such as new engine concepts, lightweight materials, and engine-electric hybrid propulsion systems. Lightweighting is seen as crucial for shorter and for longer term benefits because hybrid and fuel-cell powertrains are expected, at least in the early stages of adoption, to be heavier and more costly per unit of power than the standard internal-combustion, gasoline- or diesel-fueled powertrains they replace. Research and development (R&D) on casting of aluminum automotive components were major parts of the PNGV and R&D on casting of magnesium automotive components have been and are so under FreedomCAR. This presentation will review those efforts.

"IntroductionThe Canadian mining industry is under immense pressure to compete with foreign mine operations. The very survival of the Canadian mining industry is threatened by lower ore grades, environmental pressures, high cost of labour, unfriendly tax laws toward exploration and the increasing cost of new technology. In order to compete in the world market, Canadian producers and their suppliers are rethinking age old customer-supplier relationships in favour of preferred supplier relationships which can improve the profitability and enhance the competitive position of both partners.This paper attempts to redefine partnerships with suppliers in the context of a ""win-win"" objective. It will outline the measurable benefits to both partners through a representative product which highlights the keynote structure of any successful supplier partnership The Status Quo...Mines all over North America are plagued with the same recurring questions, ""Who has the best product for my operation at the lowest price... How do we know a product will perform to a supplier&apos;s projections after the sale...What do we do if the product fails to perform as expected?"" These questions have been asked by underground mining operators for decades but rarely have long-term solutions with measurable results been achieved.The LHD industry is one example of the status quo where partnerships will provide large gains toward technological advancement, reducing mobile equipment costs. The underground mining industry is out of sync with their surface counterparts in the open pit business.Partnerships with suppliers in the open pit world are not only a standard practice but a culture which has existed for decades. Open pit operators enjoy concepts which fix their mobile equipment costs for the life of the mine and hold the equipment supplier accountable for performance and fleet economics for 60 000 service hours and longer.Manufacturers are attempting to transfer this culture into the underground mining industry. Figure I illustrates the significance of a capital driven decision."

"Discrete transfer functions which use the grinding circuit feed tonnage to predict mass flowrates at reagent addition points in a flotation circuit were calibrated using a dynamic grinding/flotation circuit simulator. Predicted mass flow values are multiplied by reagent addition ratios to obtain actual reagent flow. The transfer functions are currently integrated into the distributed control system of Les Mines Selbaie.IntroductionThe development of adequate tools for the control of flotation processes is a continuous challenge. Since the early 1970s there have been numerous publications dealing with practical aspect of control of flotation processes. Most plants use a combination of feedback and feedforward controls to reduce the effect of the following flotation process disturbances (McKee, 1991):• changes in throughput;• changes in feed grade;• changes in particle floatability (size, liberation, surface oxidation ... ); and • deliberate changes of setpoint;Feedforward control manipulates variables such as reagent and/or air flow rate to attenuate the effect of disturbances such as changes of feed rate and mineral content. The feed forward strategy is driven by measurements of these disturbances. Feedback control is used to maintain process variables to targeted set-points of concentrate or tails grades. The feedback control action is driven by deviation from the set-point, caused by a deliberate change of set-point or disturbances.This paper proposes a method to improve feed forward control schemes by the addition of a simple model for solids transportation. The feedforward strategy considered in this paper is the ratio type, in which the manipulated variable is changed according to a predefmed ratio between this variable and the measured disturbance. A typical example is the ratio of the reagent addition to mass flow of ore.The paper reviews the state of the art in feed forward control strategy applied to flotation processes and describes the method used for predicting mass flow rates. The last section shows an application of the method in the Les Mines Selbaie flotation circuit."

"Recently, a number of major mining companies seemed unable to find a president from within the industry, and were searching outside the industry. From this, one could conclude that managers within the industry are either not being prepared or are not preparing themselves for presidential responsibility. Opinions were sought from a number of senior executives, to attempt to define the skills a prospective president should acquire and what actions a company could take or that a prospective president could take to acquire these skills.This paper contains summaries of the opinions obtained, along with the author&apos;s comments. The paper also describes the actions some companies are taking and the actions that an aspiring president can take to prepare himself for corporate management.IntroductionA manager is promoted up the management ladder when the manager&apos;s superiors believe that he is capable of handling a more senior position. Normally, the manager acquires this credibility by outstanding performance in his current management post, whether it be in a junior management (supervisory) or in a vice-presidential capacity.In most instances, the skills required for promotion can be acquired in the current position or, at worst, the abilities exhibited in a candidate&apos;s current role will convince his superiors that the necessary expertise for the more senior position can be acquired on-the-job. This is particularly the case when the new skills are felt to be an extrapolation of the old skills.However, in the case of appointment to presidential rank, there appears to be a need for new expertise which often is not acquired in normal management progression or, at least, boards of directors of some mining companies seem to believe this to be the case. The objective of this paper is to attempt to define the new skills that should be acquired by a manager who aspires to be the president, and to describe what actions might be taken by him to acquire them."

The testing procedure used was a combination of those used in the U.S.A. and the U.K. Subsequently, certification was granted to fire resistant electric cables (1974), fire-resistant mine duct material (1976) and fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (1978).Until recently, the testing procedures were copied from either the U.S. or the U.K. However, since the founding of the new Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Steering Committee for Electrical/Mechanical Mine Safety in 1981, these requirements have come under the close scrutiny of new CSA technical committees who will attempt to adopt or change the existing procedures to meet Canadian needs. This paper outlines the existing test requirements and attempts to predict how they will appear after ""Canadianization"" by the CSA committees.IntroductionFires in underground mines have always been considered more serious than in other locations because of the confined space and limited atmosphere. A fire can make escape difficult or impossible if it is blocking all of the routes to the surface. Also, the products of combustion from an underground fire can asphyxiate anyone not having self-contained breathing apparatus.In an underground coal mine, the consequences of a fire can be even more serious because of the presence of methane and coal dust in the atmosphere (which can explode) and because the coal itself is combustible.For these reasons, the inspection authorities having jurisdiction over underground mine s in Canada are quite concerned about the flammability of any materials that are used in quantity in the underground environmentAs early as 1957, the Canadian Explosive Atmospheres Laboratory (CEAL) was asked to certify conveyor belting as fire-resistant. This is because many miles of this material are used in underground mines in Canada and, as it generally travels through the mine, it is a perfect vehicle for spreading a fire."

"For the last three decades, the application of network planning has provided a basis for a formal and general approach to the discipline of project management. For fixed activity duration, a very simple algorithm commonly known as critical path method (CPM), gives the length of time required for the total project as well as indicates the activities which are vital to the completion of a project. Project Evaluation Review Techniques (PER T) on the other hand, generalize the above approach to recognize uncertainty in the activity durations by allowing them to be random variables. One of the misleading aspects of current "" PER T"" solution method is, however, the implication that there is a unique critical path. In general, any number of paths could be critical, depending on the particular realization of the random activity durations that actually occur. In this case, simulation can be utilized to estimate completion time of a project.In this paper, the concept of criticality indexing is discussed, and a simulation model application which defines the critical path based on the criticality indexing concept, to a longwall development - extraction network, is presented. The model also provides suitable scheduling of resources based on the resource constraints and smooth s out period-t o-period assignments. "Conventional belt conveyors offer an economical method for transporting materials at inclines approaching 18 degrees. Sandwich belt conveyors may be used to transport materials at high angles, to 90 degrees, while maintaining the most positive features of conventional conveyors, that is, (1) proven conventional conveyor components. (2) high-speed operation, (3) high-single lifts, (4) continuous cleaning of the smooth surf aced belts, and (5) easy, quick repair by hot or cold vulcanizing. The present discussion deals with the evolution and development of sandwich belt conveyors to satisfy the operational requirements of the open-pit mining and materials-handling industries.A look at the limitation s of conventional shallow angle conveyors reveals the conveying angle at which a cover belt is needed. The relationship between conveying angle and hugging pressure by the cover belt is developed mathematically. A study of past and current developments reveals that the Loop Belt and Beltavator are significant advances in the state-of -the- art. The vertical radius of curvature constraints are discussed in detail and the constraint equations are developed. Criteria for future development is established as a basis for evolutionary developments in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors. The use of intermediate drives in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors is investigated.IntroductionIn connection with U.S. Bureau of Mines funded–study relating to continuous haulage from deep open-pit mines, the authors had occasion to study extensively, the use of high-angle conveyors as a means of hauling mine products continuously from the pit while maintaining optimum mine slopes to minimize total excavation. The many possible high-angle conveying methods investigated included skip hoists, bucket ladders, pocket belts, fin belts, cleated belts, sandwich belts, pipe belts, screw conveyors, slurry pipe lines, and others. The sandwich belt high-angle conveyor appeared to be the most operationally-appropriate and economical solution for the mining industry. The present paper presents the theory, historical development, state-of-the-art, and evolutionary developments in sandwich belt high-angle conveyors."

"The slurry density (pulp percentage of solids) and the size of the grinding media are often used for the optimization of an operating ball mill. In many cases a change of ball size is made at the slurry density used with the original ball size. But is the optimum slurry density changing with grinding media size? Laboratory grinding tests were conducted to answer that question and results indicate that more than likely there is no need to adjust mill slurry density when adjusting the size of a grinding media in a ball mill. Full scale behaviour could be different because slurry density affects the slurry transportation through the mill and the classifier operation.INTRODUCTIONOre preparation begins with a fragmentation step that liberates valuable minerals or exposes mineral surface to the environment. The size reduction step of a mineral processing operation is energy demanding and the optimisation of this process should always be an objective for the plant metallurgists. Various approaches could be considered for improving the operation of a grinding circuit. For a close grinding circuit an adequate tuning of the classifiers operation may lead to substantial savings (McIvor, 1988). Once a grinding mill is in operation, few variables remain to be considered for process optimization. The ball charge is usually maintained to achieve a target power drawn by the grinding mill motor. The rotation speed is seldom considered (McIvor, 1983; Bazin and Lavoie, 2000) as a change of mill speed usually implies a costly pinion change. If the liner and lifter configuration is critical for SAG and AG mills (Latchireddi et al., 2005), few discussions are available for ball mills (Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 1985; McIvor, 1983). The mill feed size distribution can also be adjusted but this implies changing the upstream processes, which transposes the optimization process to another level. Modification to grinding media shape is a possible avenue (Cooper et al., 1994), but it remains that slurry density and grinding media size are probably the most frequently considered variables for the optimization of a ball mill."

This paper presents the development of a demand reduction and responsive strategy capable of reducing the electrical power demand, particularly during peak conditions. The work presented includes a case study of a UK colliery. Areas explained are the equipment installation at the mine; the development of the demand reduction strategy including the load profile database and prediction optimisation model. Some live production data from the power meter installation at the mine is also presented.
