Remote sensing technologies have been applied to numerous fields and already benefited those in improving efficiency and recognition accuracy. Change of streamflow can be devastating to residents living along riversides. Still it is difficult to detect such deathly change in large area scale by traditional field surveys. The research aims at provision of detecting streamflow change using a mathematic method based on remote sensing technologies. The scope is on remote sensing stream images taken during the invasion by Typhoon Morakot, bringing one of the major catastrophes to Taiwan. An algorithm was adopted to deal with streamflow recognition on RGB images. The algorithm is capable of yielding change measured by meters and illustrates how main streams shift. An practical example for the Baolai area surrounded by Laonong stream shows that the streamflow moved 88 meters (36 pixels) toward the downtown area during the invasion by Typhoon Morakot. In addition, the results highlight all dangerous zones (scouring zones) for residents to prevent further potential damage.

The importance and necessity of gas hydrates deposits development followed by natural gas extraction is considered in the present paper. Analysis is given to world sources focused on methane hydrates formation conditions. Information covering the most perspective gas hydrate deposit of the Black Sea is presented in the article. Two most common methods of gas hydrates development ? thermo stimulation and inhibitor injection are analyzed presenting their comparative characteristics. Basic scientific trends and developments of underground mining department in the field of gas methane extraction from gas hydrates are scrutinized. Schemes and methods of natural gas hydrates development are shown together with formulas, parameters and factors influencing the extraction process. Also the analysis is given to the possibility of gas hydrates formation from methane-air mixtures of degassing wells from coal mines of Ukraine. Improved experimental unit for gas hydrates formation under laboratorial conditions is presented with its basic characteristics. General conclusions and basic tasks requiring further research are given in the end.

The McGill Bubble Size Analyzer, with the original image-capturing device (digital video camera), has a proven record for measuring bubble size distributions that are relatively narrow, such as in mechanical cells with frother. However, some problems arise when dealing with bubble size distributions characterized by a bi-modal shape and wide range of sizes such as found in some flotation columns. To measure wide bubble size distributions it is necessary to increase both the resolution to image the small bubbles and the viewing area to include the large bubbles. This can be done using a digital still camera: digital still cameras can have higher resolution than the digital video cameras currently used and with the proper lens the viewing area may be increased without resolution loss. The digital still camera approach was used to measure bubble size distributions in flotation columns at different operations in Chile. A comparison with typical bubble size distributions generated with mechanical cells is presented.

A variety of practical tests have been tried in the mining industry to determine the support properties of mine roof bolts. Such tests include torsion wrench readings, hammer blow tests and the use of plates with built-in tension indicators. This paper gives some details of pull tests with a hydraulic jack, as carried out in coal mines of western Canada. M A~Y criteria exist for establishing the efficiency of roof bolting, and the one adopted de-pends on the nature of the problem and on the individual leanings of the investigators. Consequently, sufficient studies have not been made from a common viewpoint or under similar geological and techno-logical conditions to compare these methods of evaluation. However, regardless of whether certain tests provide sufficient factual data to form a basis for theoretical research on bolting or not, many of these tests can and do provide a positive means of judging the suitability of chosen roof bolting techniques and equipment under definite geological conditions.

The Al-Zn-Mg alloys have been known to be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which is based on intergranular cracking arisen from hydrogen embrittlement (HE). The mechanism of HE has not been fully understood yet. In order to elucidate the mechanism of HE, we need to investigate the behavior of hydrogen in the alloys. In this paper, behavior of hydrogen in an Al-5.8%Zn-2.4Mg alloy was investigated by means of hydrogen microprint technique, a method to visualize location of hydrogen emission from specimen surface as silver particles. One side of the tensile test pieces was electrolytically polished and then covered with photographic emulsion. Hydrogen was pre-introduced into the test pieces from opposite side by cathodic electrolytic charging for 30min. Then, the test pieces were stretched with continuing the charging. After that, the specimen was fixed, rinsed, dried and observed with a scanning electron microscope. As a result, silver particles were observed on some grain boundaries.

The use of roof bolting gave promise of substantial economic benefits to Continuous Miner operations at Michel Colliery. As the first step in the adoption of bolting, 142 anchorage tests, employing six types of anchor shells, were made in three mines. Significant differences were found in the anchorage capabilities of the various shells and the various roof rocks. Introduction S PORADIC attempts at roof bolting had been made at Michel Colliery over a period of ten years. Results were indifferent or inconclusive. A concerted effort was not made, because a compelling need for bolting did not exist. By 1962, however, the advent of Continuous Miners had brought a new significance to roof bolting and, at the same time, the increasing price and scarcity of mine timber made bolting materials more competitive in cost. A fresh appraisal of bolting, therefore, became justified and necessary. The potential benefits of roof bolting at Michel are several.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. "Pyhäsalmi Mine in Finland has a long history of continuous process development. The concentrator processes Cu-Zn-sulphide ore with high recoveries. An on-line flotation simulator has been developed to maintain and further improve the flotation performance. Consisting of a flotation kinetic dynamic model, and interconnected with process control software, the simulator can be used for training new control room operators in various scenarios. For daily operation, the model parameters are continuously adapted to take into account the changing process conditions. On-line simulator tracking the process can provide the process operator new information in several ways: a) values of unmeasured process variables are obtained by displaying the corresponding simulator values, b) predictions of future process states and outputs are calculated and displayed, c) information of changing process parameters can be used as an indicator of e.g. change in the processed ore type. This paper describes the adaptive simulation system and its usage at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator.IntroductionPyhäsalmi massive sulphide orebody is located in central Finland. Operation of the mine started in 1962 and it is currently producing copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and sulphur (S) concentrates. The concentrator control and optimization system has a long history of successful continuous development during the past decades (see e.g. Huuskonen & Moilanen, 2010). An on-stream analyzer has been a part of the automatic process control since 1968 (Lähteenmäki, Miettunen & Saloheimo, 1999). First control algorithms based on a flotation mathematical model were developed in 1971 (Koivistoinen & Miettunen, 1985). In 1990’s the development of a froth machine vision systems started (Kaartinen, 2009; Kaartinen, Roine & Hätönen, 2009). More recently Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy has been involved with several national development projects dealing with particle size distribution measurements (Kaartinen & Tolonen, 2008), spectral analysis of flotation slurries (Haavisto, Kaartinen & Hyötyniemi, 2008), and dynamic simulation of flotation processes. The latter topic is further elaborated in this paper."

The electrokinetic (EK) technology for dewatering of two tailings from the uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan is studied in bench scale experiments. The study includes four phases: 1. Characterization of two uranium mine tailings; 2. Assessment of voltage loss on the coated Ti anode and water interface. 3. EK cell test series to measure electrokinetic permeability (ke) of two tailings; 4. EK dewatering test series to study electrokinetic enhanced gravity dewatering on two tailings samples. The results have demonstrated that both tailings responded positively to the EK process. For the tailings containing gypsum, the EK dewatering should be a short term process (within one hour) with anode conditioning (pH adjustment). The tailings containing clay minerals responded well to EK dewatering, in which pH adjustment is optional and will further enhance the EK flow. Both tailings as tested have low hydraulic conductivity and are particularly suitable for EK dewatering and consolidation.

Field tests have been conducted to investigate the characteristics of flow and physical chemistry of acid mine drainage(AMD) in the Hwangji-Yuchang settling pond in south Korea. pH and ferrous concentration of AMD flowed in the settling pond is 6.79 and 25.5 mg/l, respectively. As a results, we found that the ferrous oxidation reacted strongly around the inlet of the pond and the distributions of physicochemical properties is depended on flow characteristics and ferrous oxidation rate of AMD.

Recent times have been extremely difficult for the resource sector, but it is crucial for our industry to maintain personal connections through good and bad times. These interactions include technical exchanges, and this is at the heart of MetSoc’s service to its members. The theme of this 53rd Conference of Metallurgists is Prosperity Through Process Advancements. There are thirteen symposia at this year’s conference mainly focused on processing from extractive fields, to materials and the environment. Supporting these topics are the plenary, poster session, and trade show plus opportunities for socializing at functions like the opening reception and the awards banquet.Many people have contributed to this conference, from the authors and presenters to the organizers and the generous sponsors. They are all gratefully acknowledged for their quality work over the last two years. A particular thank you to our student volunteers whom we hope will take advantage of their time at COM to network and to learn about this exciting industry.Again, thank you for being a part of this exciting conference of metallurgists. This paper discusses Air Liquide's patented SPALTM (Surface Protection Air Liquide) technology and process for the inerting of coreless induction furnaces using cryogenic liquid gas. Air Liquide Canada Inc., in collaboration with Riverside Brass and Aluminum Foundry Limited (Riverside Brass), conducted plant trials to demonstrate the applicability of the SPALTM technology for copper-based alloys. Results showed that with SPALTM, Riverside Brass benefited from a significant increase in metal yield as the level of dross formation was drastically reduced. Together with the many other benefits of this technology, SPALTM demonstrated to be a non-negligible cost-effective solution to reduce metal production costs. In an effort to optimize the argon flow, different flow rates were used and the oxygen level above the metal bath was measured to pinpoint optimal flow. The results of metal yield, charge mix, dross formation, and melt temperature are compared with and without argon. The metal yield improvements are dramatic and calculated net savings are presented hereunder.

The objective of the Canadian International Development Agency program is to facilitate the efforts of the people of developing countries to achieve self-sustainable economic and social development in accordance with their needs and environment. The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines (BCMEM) is the executing agency for the four-year Peru Minerals and Metals Public Sector Assistance Project which began in December 1998. The primary beneficiary is the Ministerio de Energía y Minas del Peru (PMEM). The project is designed to address mine health & safety, environmental management and mineral resource information. Project activities currently underway include joint development of: an inspection system, a mine rescue system, an enhanced and e-Commerce capable mineral information website, environmental guidelines for industry and standardized ministry evaluation criteria for environmental impact assessments and closure plans. In addition, reports on management options for mineral concentrate transportation, storage and handling, and on mine reclamation security policy have been delivered at workshops.

The various microstructural factors that influence the creep resistance of y-titanium aluminides are presented and discussed. Titanium aluminides have potential for a variety of intermediate temperature applications in both gas turbine and reciprocating engines. While it is well established that the 'fully lamellar' titanium aluminide microstructure offers superior creep properties, the particular influence of lamellar morphology, third phase precipitation, and grain boundary structure in controlling both the primary and tertiary creep behaviour is presented. The results are primarily based on tensile creep experiments undertaken using several titanium aluminide intermetallic compositions processed via powder metallurgical techniques, investment casting and Bridgman directional solidification. The results indicate that lamellar structure and precipitate formation have a major impact on primary creep, while microstructural degradation through both lamellar and precipitate coarsening influence on the onset of tertiary creep leading to fracture. The results are used to design a creep resistant microstructure produced by directional solidification and the effectiveness of this designed microstructure is demonstrated through 10,000 hour creep tests.

Arguably the SMC Test® has become the most popular laboratory hardness test in the world with over 17,000 tests having been completed to date, covering over 650 different ore bodies. It is now routinely used in design, optimisation and orebody profiling projects. The test is unique in that from relatively small amounts of drill core it simultaneously provides parameters that are used in simulation modelling of AG/SAG and crushing circuits as well as work indices that are used in power-based equations for predicting the specific energies of AG/SAG/Crushing and HPGR circuits. The very large data base that has been accumulated has provided the opportunity to study the differences in variability from deposit to deposit. This paper describes and discusses the trends that have become apparent from the study of this data base. Recommendations for appropriate selection of sample numbers are also made which are based on these trends.

The long term management of acid generating tailings at mine closure is a common issue, however, management of ARD is significantly impacted by local conditions, including climate. Acid generating tailings, over time, will produce acid rock drainage (ARD) if left exposed to water and air, which both contribute to the sulphide oxidation process. The long term closure of tailings storage areas is a concern from both environmental and engineering perspectives, with long term acid generation and dam stability the main risks. Several approaches can be taken to minimize ARD from tailings facilities using cover systems. Three tailings facility cover case histories, in areas of net positive water balances, were investigated using unsaturated flow modelling software to determine the long term potential for limiting ARD by increasing saturation of the tailings and decreasing oxygen ingress. Each case study demonstrates the importance of integrating the tailings dam engineering into tailings cover closure design. Model predictions are compared to measured saturation levels to assess the accuracy of the calculations.

"FOREWORDThe International Nickel Company of Canada has built four ore concentrating plants since 1950. The fifth and largest is now under construction. In each successive plant, the level and type of instrument control and sophistication of control techniques have increased as experience was gained. The type of control progress is illustrated in Fig. 1.At Frood-Stobie the high degree of instrumentation and the level of control were made possible by the constant evolution of techniques and improved instrument hardware technology. We have established in practice concepts that are sound, although many modifications to instrument sensor types and locations 1-rere often necessary. It is generally true that at other existing Inco mills, it is possible to run ""all manual"" for protracted lengths of time because of operator availability and dependence. The Frood-Stobie Mill is the exception, and it is the degree of reliability of the instrumentation hardware and level of maintenance that has made this possible."

High sulphur carbonaceous materials like petroleum coke and rubber tyre are unsuitable as reductants in ironmaking because part of the sulphur is transferred to the reduced metal. Globally, while large amounts of petroleum coke are produced annually from the industrial processing of crude oil, billions of end-of-life rubber tyres are held in landfills and stockpiles. This work therefore investigates the potential feasibility of utilising these high sulphur carbonaceous materials as reductants in ironmaking without transferring the sulphur into the reduced metal. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing end-of-life rubber tyre (RT), petroleum coke and blends of RT/petroleum coke and petroleum coke/high density polyethylene (HDPE) were heated under argon atmosphere in a horizontal tube furnace. Reduced pellets were analysed after 10 minutes of reduction for their sulphur content. The results showed that sulphur-free metallic iron can be successfully synthesized using RT and petroleum coke as reductants. The level of desulphurisation depends on the nature of blending of the carbonaceous materials.

Electronic Product and Process Management [EPPM] systems provide the capability to establish and map information flow between different parties in a construction project as well as model project processes. Much of the information relating to processes and their structure, the actors that operate them, and the data associated with each instance of a process is encapsulated within workflows. The wealth of information contained in an EPPM system can be exploited to extract knowledge that can provide significant cost benefits to construction companies. Workflows provide an ideal medium for the capture of knowledge over the course of a project lifecycle. We demonstrate how this knowledge may then be used to analyze workflows and determine metrics that establish the suitability of workflows to construction processes. We present a conceptual approach to measure the performance of a workflow, its constituent components and evolution, which may be used to lay the foundation for establishing paragon workflows suited to classes of construction activities.
