"Xanthate is a sulfide collector that has been widely used in flotation for almost a century. It is inexpensive, easy to synthesize and apply, and produces good metallurgy in the right applications. However, a major drawback of xanthate is that it decomposes easily and generates CS2 gas in transportation, storage and operation, which can be harmful to human health. Also, excessive xanthate in tailings pond leads to toxicity of the process water and potential damages to aqua-life systems. New regulations in Ontario require that the TWA (time-weighted-average) value of CS2 in the work place is below 1 ppm, which is 1/10 of the previous limit. The stringent regulation may eventually sweep other regions of Canada with the increased awareness of healthy working conditions and environment protection. Therefore, it becomes very important to find xanthate replacements which will be “green”, i.e., environmentally friendly.In this research work, a systematic procedure is used for collector evaluation using the Sudbury nickel sulfide ores from Vale’s Ontario operations, starting with the collector properties (MSDS) evaluation, followed by batch flotation tests, miniplant tests, plant trials and economic evaluation. It is found that the most promising xanthate replacement is dithiocarbamate.INTRODUCTIONSulfide mineral flotation has been practiced since the early 20th century. Its industrial importance is well recognized as mineral concentrates from flotation can be economically smelted and refined to provide primary metals. Collectors play a vital role in froth flotation. There are reagents possessing both a polar group that binds them to the mineral surface and a nonpolar group that is oriented away from the surface to attach air bubbles. The introduction of xanthate as a sulfide collector in 1925 was a remarkable development in froth flotation (Keller, 1925). It is low cost, easy to synthesize, water soluble, simple to control in application. Most importantly, it has strong capability and usually good selectivity for sulfide mineral flotation, which have been keeping its application prominent for almost a century."

Located North of Williams Lake British Columbia, Gibraltar Mine is the fourth largest open pit Copper mine in North America. Gibraltar commenced Copper concentrate production in 1972 with a mill throughput rate of 30,000 tons per day. A series of expansion projects, including installation of a second SAG mill with variable speed drives in 2013, has increased mill throughput to 85,000 tons per day. Over the past 24 months, Gibraltar Mine in partnership with Spartan Controls has executed several advanced process control programming projects culminating in the implementation of a Continuous Speed Controller (CSC) for the most recently installed SAG mill. This paper covers development and results for the SAG mill speed controller. INTRODUCTION In January 2016, the price of Copper fell below $2.00 USD per pound, the lowest price in 7 years. Gibraltar Mine faced a significant challenge; how to maximize profit in an environment where capital spending was not an option. An opportunity was quickly identified to improve performance through increased automation and advanced control of the grinding processes. Beginning in March 2016, Gibraltar Mine partnered with Spartan Controls to introduce Advanced Process Control (APC) to the grinding circuits. The collaboration between metallurgical and process control engineering disciplines proved to be effective for achieving gains in throughput, reliability and productivity for the mill process. The Gibraltar milling facilities include 2 grinding-flotation plants for concentration of chalcopyrite ore with throughput rates of 58,000 tons per day (Concentrator 1) and 38,000 tons per day (Concentrator 2). Each of the two concentrators has a 34’ diameter SAG mill powered by 2 GE 4800 kW synchronous electric motors. For SAG 1 (in concentrator 1), power is transmitted through 2 Eaton Airflex clutches. For SAG 2 (in concentrator 2), the motors are driven by 2 TMEIC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). All programming is done using DeltaV, which Gibraltar uses as its Distributed Control System (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

"Mining operations generate an enormous amount of data that is difficult to organize, analyze and act on. These data require an extremely broad range of experts to investigate and manage the cross-disciplinary information. The data collects in paper files, diverse databases, historians, stand-alone applications, and excel files. This collection of sources represents everything from monthly, weekly, or daily inputs to real-time feeds or sporadic unscheduled entries. With the operational complexities ever increasing and fewer engineers per mine, an efficient operation is becoming more and more challenging. Engineers are typically burdened with data collection, clean up, and administrative efforts leaving very limited time for engineering assessment and/or optimization analysis. Often optimization becomes limited to the analysis of equipment uptime through existing field automation systems. A great portion of the field data is tucked away in historians seldom reaching those engineers who might leverage the data. Few mine operators have the time or budget to re-architect their operations data collection or management practice, so solutions must enable improvements without requiring expensive or time-consuming implementation. This presentation highlights examples where the aforementioned challenges are addressed using a solution framework designed to enable: 1) data integration and connectivity, 2) monitoring and opportunity recognition, and 3) engineering workflow automation. The initiative extends the concepts and success proven in the automation market segment to all disciplines across the mine operations. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry by its very nature spends a great deal of its capital on equipment maintenance and replacement. In addition, periodic shutdowns due to equipment failure are typically very costly in terms of interrupted operations. Keeping mining equipment running at peak performance and avoiding costly shutdowns can make a huge difference in the overall return from mining operations. Today, information can be make available that can go a long way towards spotting equipment issues and permitting timely intervention to avoid costly unplanned shutdowns. That said, gathering all of the information from numerous points on many different pieces of equipment necessary to enhance overall equipment effectiveness presents its own daunting issues."

"Mercury is introduced into the Bayer refining process as a trace element in bauxite. During the digestion stage, a portion of the mercury is extracted which partitions between the flash tank off-gas, vapour condensate and bauxite residue streams. A technology or treatment that stabilises mercury in the solid phase during digestion would prevent environmental management issues that may arise from the presence of mercury in condensate and non-condensable gases. This study examines the effect of process additives on the deportment of mercury under Bayer digestion conditions. Bauxite digestion experiments were conducted in batch autoclaves in the presence of additives. Process liquor was analysed for mercury content using a thermal desorption technique. Pyrite and copper hydroxide were evaluated for their suitability as additives.INTRODUCTIONMercury is an ancient metal characterised by electrochemical nobility, volatility, low solubility in water and a liquid state at room temperature (Holleman and Wiberg, 2001). The biogeochemical cycle of mercury is complex. Elemental mercury may enter the atmosphere due its volatility, where it can be transported long distances. After settling and adsorption to sediments, methylation is catalysed through microbial metabolism (Qureshi et al., 2009). Methylated mercury species are potent neurotoxins, and bioaccumulation of mercury is well documented, particularly in seafood (Kozin et al., 2013, Pan et al., 2014, Pollman, 2014). Environmental regulations for mercury emissions are becoming increasingly stringent (UNEP, 2015). Considerable research has already been performed and technologies developed for the remediation of mercury in wastewater and the trapping of mercury from industrial stack emissions. Wastewater technologies usually target ionised mercury using adsorbent, ion exchange and complexation mechanisms (Krishnan and Anirudhan, 2002, Li et al., 2015a, Chiarle et al., 2000), while stack emission technology is dominated by impregnated activated carbon adsorbents (Gao et al., 2013, Zheng et al., 2012). Related developments include piezoelectric amalgamating sensors for in line detection of gaseous elemental mercury in industrial stack emissions (Kabir et al., 2015, Sabri et al., 2011). There is a paucity of research regarding removal of mercury from the Bayer process."

"This paper describes a series of wear-resistant ceramic materials which have been successfully used in the mineral processing industry in Canada. Applications include use with metallic ores, coal, potash and asbestos, and in other processes where wear degradation is of major concern. The paper will also deal with considerations involving the selection of the different ceramic materials available. It will cover the installation of ceramic materials on support structures under varying process ' conditions, as well as the other physical and chemical factors which have to be taken into account.IntroductionIn the mineral processing industry, large volumes of ores tailings and other materials are handled. The abrasive nature of most of these materials results in extensive wear to both handling and processing equipment.Wear ratios versus cost, production losses due to down time and wear-resistant material suitability for a given application all demand particular attention when viewed against the need for increased efficiencies in existing processes. As a consequence, a very active continuous search for materials with improved wear resistance has been carried out for many years.In this search, starting about 20 years ago, dense ceramic materials were tested and evaluated in certain applications, notably in the iron ore and asbestos operations in Eastern Canada. As a result of substantially better performance both in continuous extended life and ultimate economics realized , wear-resistant ceramic applications developed progressively in many other processing applications, replacing traditionally used materials.In the vast majority of wear-resistant ceramic applications, considerable extended life over previously used materials was established. This invariably was not just a fractional increase but, in most cases , in factors of double, triple and often all the way up to 18 and 20 times the life of alternative materials used previously. In certain applications, extended life could not be measured and appears to be indefinite.Obviously, as a result of such experiences, the progressively wider use of wear-resistant ceramic materials is now an established trend."

"In recent years, computer based ""expert systems"" have been taking on large complex tasks for which no exact algorithmic solutions are feasible; tasks previously reserved for human experts requiring empirical knowledge, judgment, experience, developing a ""best solution "" by the use of plausible reasoning. Mining method selection is an appropriate area for the application of an expert system because extensive and detailed knowledge is required to make a ""best"" interpretaion of frequently ambiguous geological information. The expert system model presented here would enable users to apply expert knowledge to the evaluation of methods for coal deposits mineable by underground methods. IntroductionIn an increasingly complex and specialized world, human expertise spanning scientific, economic, social and political issues plays an increasingly important role in all branches of engineering. This is especially true of mining engineering. The number of scientific and professional disciplines involved in mine planning and evaluation, illustrates the problem. A conservative list includes geology, geophysics, geotechnics, hydrology, mining, environment, and economics.Engineers are almost obliged to be experts in at least one of the above disciplines if they are to handle the volume of information required in the planning process. Although computers have become indispensable tools in many endeavours, there is continued reliance on the human expert's ability to identify and synthesize these diverse factors, to form judgments, evaluate alternatives , and make decisions . This is especially true with regard to problems that are not easily amenable to precise formulations.The precious resource of human expert is also fragile and transient. The departure of a crucial expert from an organization ma y cause serious dislocations. Senior experienced people impart their knowledge of younger colleagues, but the demand for their talent may not leave sufficient time for such educational efforts. "The object of this paper is to outline a computerized net cash flow approach for practical cutoff grade determinations. A cutoff grade carries not only geological but also economic value, in which costs are balanced against revenues. For different situations, cutoff grades are a 'standard of value' that are determined for the purpose of classifying economic or uneconomic mineral reserves in a specified time frame. In a constantly changing technical and economic environment, the decision to develop or maintain a mining operation at its best economic potential, requires an appropriate cutoff grade strategy, a strategy consistent with short- and long-term operational and corporate objectives and one based on realistic marketing and metal prices forecasts. The use of a project evaluation computer program, in combination with specific corporate net cash flow requirements, shows the most promising and flexible team approach for cutoff grade optimization.IntroductionThe recent recession has had a devastating effect on the Canadian mining industry. Exploration and mining R&D expenditures have been critically reduced and now are believed to be below healthy levels. Ore reserves, mine life and cutoff grades are careening in several directions because of low base metal prices, relatively high costs and sensitive precious metal prices.These conditions demand an improved understanding of the terms ""ore"" and ""cutoff grades"" as they are applied to the planning process and day-to-day operations. ""Ore"" or 'ore reserves"" is a dynamic concept, reflecting a cumulative effect of changes in geological, technical and economic conditions in terms of material which can be mined at a potential profit. By contrast, if economics are not the primary consideration, the term ""mineral reserve"" or ""mineral inventory"" should be used to describe the mineral deposit. For different situations, cutoff grade is ""a standard of value"" determined for the purpose of classifying mineral reserves as economic or uneconomic in a specified time frame. The question of mining at average reserve grade or low-grade material during high metal prices is of paramount importance for cutoff grade strategy."

Simulation tools are preferred for evaluating complex systems due to its ability to mimic reality and quickly evaluate many different what-if scenarios and find global solutions. A simulation model is capable of representing variable and dynamic disturbances that are typically encountered in day-to-day operations; this is where spreadsheet models or linear programs fall short because they cannot account for the dynamic behavior and relationships. The simulation model used for this work was developed by Xstrata-Nickel (previously Falconbridge). The simulation tool is very flexible and can be used to simulate different mining and development methods. The scope of the modeling included production mining, geology, equipment fleets, equipment maintenance and random failures, manpower, shift schedules, and cycle activity times. A case overview of the 170 Orebody will be presented along with the challenges associated with data collection for the model inputs. Results and lessons learned will also be discussed.

Since its commercialization thirty years ago, the Recoflo® short bed ion exchange process has been extensively utilized for the recovery of a wide variety of acids and metal salts. In addition to a reduction in resin bed height from 200 cm to 300 cm to 15 cm to 60 cm, the process has a number of features such as utilization of fine mesh resins in a compressed bed which together make it ideal for a number of applications. The process has been extensively exploited, for example, in the metal finishing industry for recovery of valuable chemicals from electroplating, anodizing, etching and pickling wastes. More recently, it has also been applied in the primary metals industry for purification of copper electrolytes and metals recovery from leachates. The paper discusses several of these applications and some of the issues that were found to be key to their success.

For many years, sulfuric acid producers all over the world have been forced to meet ever more strict environmental regulations to reduce SO2 emissions. The sulfuric acid industry has implemented new solutions in order to comply with the new lower SO2 emissions target. Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) has responded to this challenge by continuously improving the range of VK sulfuric acid catalysts and providing tailor-made catalyst solutions to meet the demands of the sulfuric acid producers for lower SO2 emissions. Reducing emissions through catalysis: requires less capital than installing a scrubber, requires no additional process chemicals, generates no waste or by-product to dispose of. In 1996 Topsoe introduced VK69, a cesium-promoted vanadium catalyst, designed for operation in the pass(es) after the intermediate absorption tower in double absorption plants. The high activity of VK69 allows for a more than 50% reduction in SO2 emissions from existing double-absorption plants. Topsoe currently has more than 110 installations of VK69. To comply with the still more stringent regulations being placed on the sulfuric acid industry to lower SO2 emissions, Topsoe has developed a new sulfuric acid catalyst designated VK-701 LEAP5™. This catalyst was introduced to the market in 2010. VK-701 LEAP5™ is based on a novel technology which circumvents the internal transport deficiencies of existing commercial sulfuric acid catalysts and thereby offers exceptionally high activity in strong, SO3 rich gases. Sulfuric acid plants have used this catalyst to meet emissions requirements lower than previously believed possible with a catalyst only solution. This paper will present examples on how to reduce emissions by implementing a tailor-made catalyst solution using VK69 and VK-701 LEAP5™.

"Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. Previous results related to the sulfuric acid digestion of SmCo5 are presented somewhere else [2]"

During the 90?s Atlas Copco and LKAB developed a pioneering fully automatic long hole production drilling system based on the Atlas Copco Simba W469 drill rigs. These drill rigs have since then drilled about 8.000.000 drill meters at the LKAB Kiruna and Malmberget mines. In 2005 LKAB ordered three new Atlas Copco Simba W6 C, to complement Simba W469s still in operation. These new Simbas are based on the latest generation computerized drilling technology have proven to meet the expectations of LKAB and now form a base for future automation in Kiruna and Malmberget mines. This paper will present experiences from the introduction of Simba W6 C in LKAB Kiruna and Malmberget mines. The paper will also elaborate on the latest developments in remote access and remote control technology making it a common automation option available for all computerized Atlas Copco drill rigs.

Programs for new and existing properties and for properties which may be purchased will be outlined and potential solutions to problems will be discussed. In addition to the compliance aspects of operations, due diligence will be discussed.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe impact of mining projects on the environment is an area of major concern to the public, governmental agencies and mining companies. Due to the ever increasing pressure on the government by special interest groups and the public, governments have implemented legislation to control potential environmental impact of mining, from the exploration phase through to close-out. By not planning for environmental issues during all phases of a mining operation, unavoidable delays and retrofitted environmental programmes will be expensive and cause projects to be delayed, which, ultimately, may cause the abandonment of a mining prospect. Most jurisdictions require at least one full year of background environmental data. Therefore, many thousands of dollars are wasted as construction is interfered with or held up due to data collection. This may be avoided by a thousand dollars worth of sample being collected and analyzed early in the project."

"Chemical and biological aspects of the formation of acidic effluents from sulfide waste materials are discussed. Test procedures to determine the acid producing potential of waste materials, as well as the characteristics of such acidic effluents, are presented. Practical applications of the test procedures are discussed with reference to predictior of environmentally unacceptable drainage and to estimation of metal recovery by dump leaching.INTRODUCTIONNatural leaching of sulfide minerals, exposed to the atmosphere, has been occurring for geological time. For centuries, man has been aware of the acid drainage originating from coal workings, copper mines and waste dumps. With the advent of the technical sciences, the processes involved in acid mine drainage production were considered to be solely chemical in nature. However, in 1947, it was shown (1) that a specific microorganism, called Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was responsible for acid mine drainage from coal workings. It was demonstrated that under suitable conditions - this bacterium oxidized pyrite and marcosite in the coal to ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Numerous studies have subsequently demonstrated that - under suitable conditions - Thiobacillus ferrooxidans can attack most sulfide minerals, producing weak sulfuric acid, oxidizing ferrous to ferric iron and solubilizing other metals present (notably copper and zinc) as their sulfate salts."

Operations and Maintenance departments have long had an adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Lean Production however has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance, and are now adopting Lean throughout the organization. Modern management initiatives like these explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in the realms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments however is information systems. Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the way needed. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many variables have lead to systems problems which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the ?plant tree?) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final ?bridging of the gap?.

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. The basic system is quite simple. It consists of five main elements, as shown in Figure 1, which are:1. Prime Mover - generally an electric motor.2. Hydraulic Pump - fixed or variable positive displacement type such as a piston or vane p.mp which displaces a constant amount of fluid for ead1 revolution - this unit converts mechanical energy of the prime mover into fluid energy.3. Rockbursts are a major hazard in deep hard rock underground mining and tunneling. To date a significant number of rockbursts still defy conventional explanations. A review of rockburst case histories in the literature has shown that pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading are prone to rockbursting in situations where they are least expected under conventional knowledge of rockburst causes. Despite the evidence of the effects of shear loading on underground infrastructure, and the frequency of their occurrence, little is known about how this loading mechanism causes such large magnitude events and extensive damage. In this paper analytical and numerical modeling are used to understand the behaviour of pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading. The numerical modelling results show that pillars under shear loading are less confined than their equivalents in loaded in pure compression in the same geologic environment, and are therefore more brittle and weak. For tabular excavations under shear loading, the behaviour depends on whether such excavations are continuous, co-planar or offset with rock bridges. Analytical results based on slit theory show releasable potential energy in tabular excavations increases nonlinearly with excavation half-span. The study results are important for the safe and economic extraction of orebodies under shear loading.

This paper presents the conceptual design of a magnetically-levitated skip for use in an underground mine. A skip is used to move rock from an underground mine to its surface processing facility. Conventionally the skip is raised and lowered by cables, similar to an elevator. In a magnetically-levitated skip, the cable is replaced with a linear induction or synchronous motor to provide propulsion and levitation. Removal of the cables in a magnetically-levitated skip provides many advantages over a conventional system including the ability: to negotiate corners, to travel vertically in the shaft as well as horizontally to the mining face, and to move a very large volume of material using multiple skips in a small shaft. A magnetically-levitated skip is a safer, more environmentally-friendly, productive alternative to conventional skipping. It has the further advantage to decrease haulage distances for underground vehicles.

"This presentation reviews three continuous centrifuge separators, the Falcon-C, Kelsey Jig and Multi-Gravity Separator, two units with possible synergies with centrifuges, the In-Line Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor, and two centrifuge prototypes, the continuous Knelson and the Altair Jig. Typical applications, potential problems, promising synergies and general concentration mechanisms are discussed. A general discussion on the sources of information, the nature of the fluidization water flow, test work for potential centrifuge separations and the early life cycle of new technology, using centrifuge separators as an example, follows. The semi-batch Knelson Concentrator has probably received the most exposure, but it is rather because of the shear number of units sold than the width and breath of its applicability. It excels at recovery very dense minerals in very small concentrations, and has become a workhorse of the gold industry. Falcon’s Super-Bowl comes a distant second, with very similar applications. A number of copycats are available, and are generically identified as “Knelsons.” This presentation will not address these units explicitly, but as possible synergies."
