Faced with decreasing ore grades and harder ores, many mines today are forced to become more efficient with their approach to processing. Variability in ore hardness, mineral liberation, reagent consumption, sliming, and leach responses are all a function of the minerals present and their concentration. Modern semi-automated X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses using Rietveld refinement techniques, in conjunction with high speed quantitative Near Infrared (NIR) analyses, provide reliable quantitative mineralogical ore profiling. By the implementation of XRD with NIR, mining, milling and leaching operations no longer need to be dependant on visual estimates for GeoMetallurgical Modeling and are provided with a valuable forecasting and production control tool. This paper will illustrate the development, plant implementation and application of XRD and NIR at several copper operations.

Waste-rock piles from metal mining operations are comprised of large surface deposits of unsaturated, coarse-grained soil and rock. The unsaturated condition and heterogeneous, coarsegrained nature of these deposits make them difficult to monitor or characterize. Key parameters that must be evaluated include; volume-mass relationships (e.g. water content, air content, porosity, density, degree of saturation, grain-size), transport properties (e.g. air-permeability, gas diffusion, hydraulic conductivity), geochemistry (e.g. solids, gas, and fluid phases) and soilatmospheric fluxes (water and gas). This paper describes some of the techniques that have been developed to characterize waste rock piles for uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan. For each technique, the method of measurement is described, and preliminary field data are presented and discussed.

Lack of skilled workforce in mining industry during the current decade has been a serious concern for most mining organization globally. At the beginning of this decade the major envisioned difficulty was related to generational breach of mining professionals. By 2003, mining industry recover from a low metal prices cycle following by a worldwide mining investment boom in 2005 that triggers a talent war among mining companies that was not only limited to professional level but skilled operators as well. Despite world?s economy collapse in October 2008, impact on mining industry was small comparing to other industries and appears to show evidence of healing. Under this context, fundamentals that have been driven lack of skilled workforce for the mining industry in previous years still valid. Starting in 2007, Minera Argentina Gold SA - Barrick Veladero, subsidiary of Barrick Gold, initiated an innovative selection and training program for candidates without exposure to mining. Following our corporate social responsibility mandates, Barrick Veladero decided to change its hiring process entirely, concentrating on selection and training of local people with no experience rather than hire experienced mining operators. This paper shares Barrick Veladero experiences on its hiring program, challenges faced, and current results.

Positron-Emission-Particle-Tracking (PEPT) has enabled the non-invasive observation of charge and slurry transport in model mills under operational conditions. We use high quality PEPT data to infer that the charge motion can be effectively described by a non-Newtonian granular fluid. An improved theory for slurry transport, including inertial effects, is presented.

The stone is white, poorly consolidated, and consists of rounded quartz grains of high natural purity. It is an important supplier of silica in Western Canada for glass, fiberglass, foundry and other industrial uses.

This paper briefly describes the current state of underground coal gasification (UCG) processes globally and in the Slovak Republic. Recent results of laboratory and technical tests are presented. In addition, on site measurements have added new knowledge of UCG technology. A series of laboratory tests based on physical models shows promise for managed UCG process control.

"Flotation of fine (< 10 µm) minerals is a challenge exacerbated by the emerging practice of fine grinding flotation feed to better liberate targeted minerals; however, the ability of conventional flotation cells to float liberated fines remains questionable. The Gold Ore solution using Mach reactors was tested at Mintek, South Africa, and showed an ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor, a projected recovery improvement of 4% for the Mach-reactor case, and final concentrate grade twice that of conventional flotation. Theory, pilot plant results, and key aspects of plant design, supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning, are discussed.RÉSUMÉ Le procédé de flottation de minerais fins (< 10 µm) pose de grandes difficultés, lesquelles sont aggravées par la pratique émergente de l’alimentation du circuit de flottation avec des mailles de broyage très fines pour mieux libérer les minéraux ciblés ; la capacité des cellules de flottation classiques à flotter les fines de minerais libérées reste cependant discutable. La solution proposée par la société Gold Ore, qui utilise des réacteurs Mach, a été testée à Mintek, en Afrique du Sud ; elle affichait une augmentation d’environ 180 % du facteur kfast développé par M. Kelsall dans son modèle de flottation, une amélioration prévue de la récupération de 4 % dans le cas du réacteur Mach, et une teneur finale des concentrés deux fois plus importante que celle obtenue avec la flottation classique. "Mine tunneling applications are sensitive to the leakage and friction performance of ducting systems. Improvements in performance can help project economics through reduction in drift height, booster fan spacing, fan electrical power requirement, and deferral of ventilation raise construction. Semirigid plastic ducting has enjoyed significant adoption in mine tunneling in recent years. This paper explores technical properties and performance aspects of this relatively new material application.INTRODUCTIONUnderground mining projects are sensitive to mine development cost and schedule to meet first production—both of which are defined to a substantial extent by mine access construction. The very nature of mine access development requires driving accesses into new areas and even mechanized and automated tunneling methods require ventilation. Until underground airways are connected, allowing a flow-through circuit, ducted ventilation is required to establish ventilation within any single-access (i.e.: dead-end) heading. See Figure 1 as an example of ducted ventilation. Improving performance of ducted ventilation systems impacts project cost and schedule in several ways:For drifts whose height is defined by overhead clearance above haul trucks or tall equipment, smaller diameter ducting will decrease heading size.With higher ventilation flows, activities can be less ventilation-constricted; secondary headings can be worked without restriction, which improves schedule.Given the ability to provide more air for a given fan power, blasting gasses can clear the face and mine more quickly so crews can return to work more quickly - allowing higher advance rates.Lower electrical costs – both due to lower power consumed by fans and with the requirement for fewer electrical stations to power booster fans."

"Une recherche debutee en 1987 tente de cerner divers éléments ayant un impact sur la productivite miniére, de facon à améliorer la planification des operations souterraines. II a été possible de recueillir jusqu&apos;à trente variables dans sept opérations minières differentes du Nord-Ouest québécois. Cette présentation rend compte de quelques résultats préliminaires obtenus à l’une d&apos;entre elle. Entre autres, elle montre comment une association entre une analyse de régression multiple et un logiciel d&apos;optimisation (OPTIMUL) peut servir à une application particulière de la planification d&apos;une opération minière du Québec. Plus spécifiquement, la présentation montre comment une quantité appropriée de ANFO et de TOVEX peut maximiser la quantilé de minerai cassé, minimiser les couts de sautage ou encore minimiser les coûts d&apos;explosifs par tonne de roche cassée, en se basant sur une série de contraintes réalistes provenant de la mine.ABSTRACTA study, underway since 1987, tries to evaluate factors affecting mines&apos; productivity. Information has been collected from seven underground mines in Quebec and this paper shows preliminary results from one. In particular, it shows how a combination of multiple regression analysis, mathematical programming and a set of realistic mine constraints can be used for a particular application of mine planning. More specifically, the paper shows a parallel between maximizing production of tons of broken are, minimizing explosives costs or minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are by an appropriate selection of ANFO and TOVEX quantity of explosives. Finally, the paper shows that minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are is the best alternative to follow providing a special optimization program can be set up."

The geochemical interpretation of results of statistical analysis of published multi-element stream sediment data from southwest and northern New Brunswick is presented. Element concentrations in southwest New Brunswick are low and comparable to element concentrations in background areas in northern New Brunswick. Deposits of copper and nickel are indicated in southwest New Brunswick. Anomalous element concentrations occur in several areas in northern New Brunswick and the elements most commonly associated with these anomalies are Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Ag; and also Mo, Wand Sb. Bedrock geology greatly influences element concentrations and may cause false anomalies. Manganese has a pronounced effect on the dispersion patterns of Co and also Zn, Mo, Pb, As, Ba and Ni. Nickel and Cr are strongly sympathetically related and this association is independent of bedrock type.
