"Refractory materials are essential for all high-temperature applications in industry. Depending on the position in the furnace and specific process requirements, refractories are produced from several raw materials, such as dolomite, magnesite, bauxite, graphite or chromite. Most of these raw materials are not rare but strict quality requirements limit the producers of refractories to only a few deposits in the world. Thus, raw material supply is a critical factor for the production of refractories and accounts for 40-50 % of the total costs of refractories.A possible way to lower dependency on raw material supply is recycling of spent refractories. Main challenge in recycling is the separation of different brick types from each other and the removal of impurities, such as steel or slag. The European FP7 project REFRASORT aims to apply sensor-based sorting for separation of spent refractories. Sensor-based sorting is known from food industry, recycling and mineral processing and has proven its reliability. Nevertheless, some adjustments are necessary compared to applications in mineral processing because of other sensor-types and a higher number of products in one sorting step. This paper presents the results of feasibility tests for sensor-based sorting of refractories with near infrared spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Both sensors showed the potential to identify different brick types but the most promising results were obtained using LIBS technology. INTRODUCTIONRefractories are solid, ceramic products, which can sustain temperatures of more than 1500°C, without losing their stability or shape. Bricks of refractories have to withstand corrosion in contact with liquid steel or slag. Various high temperature applications, such as the production of glass, steel, copper or cement, require high quality refractories. The quality requirements of refractory bricks are strict, because small impurities can lower the thermal strength significantly."

SIGMA MINES is situated in the township of Bourlamaque, Abitibi County, Quebec. It is a gold producer, and presently treats an average of 1,200 tons of ore per day, at a grade of approximately 0.18 oz. per ton recovered. The mill started operations in March, I937, at a rate of 300 tons per day. This was increased to 800 tons in I940, and to 1,000 tons by I943. The rate was cut back during the war years, but was brought back up to capacity by I948. The mill tonnage was in-creased to the present 1,200 tons per day in I960. The underground workings are serviced through No. 2 Shaft (Figure 1), which, with 24 operating levels, extends from surface to a depth of 3,317 feet. When depth exploration was decided upon, two possibilities were considered: (a) deepen the main shaft by1,000 feet; (b) put down a winze for the same distance.

Introduction All mining operations produce rock dust. Inhalation of rock dust, particularly if it has a high silica content, causes silicosis. Silicosis is, therefore, recognized as a hazard of the mining industry and has been made compensable throughout most of Canada. Most of the dust in any mining operation is caused by rock drilling and blasting operations and the movement and transportation of broken rock. Dust from blasting cannot be eliminated, but it can be controlled by means of increased ventilation, the use of water sprays, and the control of blasting hours. Dust from ore movement can be reduced by keeping the broken rock in a moist condition at all times. The dust from the rock drilling operation has been found to be the most difficult to control. Concentrations of dust caused by rock drills in stopes can usually be reduced to the safe minimum of 300 particles per cubic centimeter (p.p.c.c.) by diluting the air with increased ventilation. In development headings, where the machines are more confined, this is not always practicable. Therefore, the dust must be eliminated at its source. This paper deals with the reduction of dust from Leyner machines by adopting improved designs.

"SINCE the .Canadian Chemical Company has no direct connection with mining operations, and I have had no experience with mining, there is little I can tell you that you do not already know. However, we have had considerable experience with certain types of metallurgical problems and I would like to discuss with you some of these problems and their solutions by our metallurgists.In order to acquaint you with the type of plant and processes to be employed at Edmonton, I would like first to take a few .minutes to trace briefly the history -of the Canadian Chemical Company's affiliate, The Celanese Corporation of America. In the early •part of the twentieth century, two young Swiss brothers, Camille and Henri Dreyfus, received their P.h.D. degrees in chemistry. They were extremely interested in work which was being carried on at that time to find a suitable synthetic fiber that could compete with natural fibers, both quality and price-wise. Early man-made fibers were both coarse and hard to dye. The Doctors Dreyfus• poured all their earnings into research and ultimately developed cellulose acetate filament. During World War I, the Dreyfus brothers were invited to the United States to produce cellulose acetate 'dope' for airplane wing coverings. Dr. Camille Dreyfus built the first American plant for fiber production at Cumberland, Maryland, in 1924.Due to resistance of textile mills to the new fibers, Celanese was forced to set up its own dying, weaving, and finishing mills to prove the new materials. Through the years, however, this operation has •been retained primarily for fabric development purposes,.. with the majority of the acetate being sold to other textile mills."

The Nak?azdli First Nation and the municipality of Fort St. James are located in the Stuart Lake/Nak?al Bun area and are not unfamiliar to mining. These northern British Columbian communities have been associated with the historic Pinchi Lake Mercury mine and today are closely linked with British Columbia?s newest mine, the Mt. Milligan mine. Prior to the construction of Mt. Milligan, community health and social service providers were concerned about potential impacts that would occur from new mineral development activities. This concern has led to a partnership between the above communities and researchers with expertise in the area of mining and health. This paper describes: the current mining and health environment with a focus on British Columbia; mining trends in the Stuart Lake/Nak?al Bun area; the current community-based health research project funded by the Vancouver Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and; a suite of community-based health recommendations to mining companies on key issues to consider when developing projects near municipalities and Aboriginal communities in Canada, based upon one of the newest mines under development in Canada.

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. The prime object of the expedition was co determine the presence or absence of the copper-bearing Keweenawan basalts.

"High costs, both in terms of human resources and financial costs, have long been the end result of accidents involving vehicles which continue to occur too often throughout our industry.For example, radio remote control LHDs too often seriously injure their operators in underground operations. Costly efforts are required by mine owners to provide safety bays and platforms from which their operators can work safely. In open pit operations, large heavy haulers have too frequently backed over vehicles or turned into vehicles unfortunate enough to be situated in their large blind spots. These are just two examples of situations that have occurred again and again under similar circumstances.Meanwhile, electronic methods of detecting proximity to vehicles have continued to develop. The time has come for the industry to think “outside the box” to evaluate whether many of these new methods can solve these recurring problems.This note takes a look at various types of proximity detection technologies that are in use today in other industries, and discusses the various potential applications within our industry."

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. Mine planning is the foundation of value for a mining company. Good mine planning requires solid understanding of the ore body, rigorous standards and processes, robust and useful information technology and skilled people. Life of mine planning is key to identifying strategic direction for any mine and short range mine planning is key to delivering forecast and budget expectations. Mine planning at Kinross has been identified as a critical success factor and initiatives are being prepared to improve the quality of our plans and to build bench strength in our teams. The Kinross Way for Mine Planning (KWMP) has been developed and implemented to establish the standards to ensure a strong business foundation. This paper briefly describes the process used to develop the KWMP and presents a selection of mine planning best practice initiatives at Kinross mines.

"Cameco operates the high-grade McArthur River uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan, and is constructing the high-grade Cigar Lake uranium mine. Cameco has studied the concept of underground milling of high-grade uranium ore. Compared to conventional milling on surface, the underground milling scheme appears to offer significant cost savings and a lower environmental impact. "A major consideration in the design of high capacity tiedown anchors for dam, bridge and tower foundations is the tensile resistance of the rock mass to pullout, typically as a result of overturning moments or hydrostatic uplift. Rock mass pullout capacity for installed anchors is developed from the tensile strength and fracture propagation properties of intact rock, the orientation and physical properties of the discontinuities and anchor confinement at depth. The typically assumed, but generally conservative, design approach is to calculate anchor pullout capacity using the dead weight of a uniformly shaped inverted “cone” with an assumed initiation point and breakout angle. In some cases, some tensile or shear strength is considered across the area of the assumed pullout cone, however, these strength estimates are based primarily on based on limited historic testing data, empirical relationships for rock mass strength developed for other applications, and engineering judgement.As an alternative to the current foundation anchor design method, this paper presents a new approach to the rock cone pullout problem using Discrete Fracture Networks (DFN) combined with numerical simulations. The simulations presented in the paper investigate the influence of fractures in a synthetic rock mass on ultimate anchor strength. In addition, the global influence on fracture network statistics on rock mass pullout failure is also discussed and it is contended that some of the aleatory and epistemic uncertainty inherent in the design of rock anchors can be reduced by considering fracture statistics in anchor design."

The Division is concerned with physical methods as applied to geo-logical research and mapping. An at-tempt is made to describe long-term goals, illustrated by examples of projects in the fields of aeromagnetic interpretation, palaeomagnetic re-search, Pleistocene and groundwater geophysics, seismic surveying, electromagnetic research and instrument development. Cooperative projects in surveys and research, with universities, private companies and provincial organizations, are frequently undertaken. An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view. HISTORY OF THE DIVISION M AGNETIC, electrical, seismic and gravity methods, as a means of extending the geologist's sphere of observation beyond the head of his hammer, came into wide-spread use for the first time after World ?war I. Small pilot scale experiments have shown that it is possible to almost fully eliminate the minor elements (ME), namely As, Sb, Bi and Pb contained in smelter dusts by vacuum calcination of mixtures of the dust with sulphidizing agents such as dirty copper concentrate or elemental sulphur at 900 °C and 80 +/- 30 Pa for 90 minutes. The products of this calcination are a residue comprising a purified mixture of copper containing compounds along with the gangue constituents and a high sulphur condensate comprising a mixture of the minor element compounds. In particular, the Cu:ME ratios of the concentrate and dust were increased from 250 and 50, from 28 and 12 and from 36 and 8 to roughly 3000, 3000 and 100 for the calcine, for Bi, As and Sb, respectively. It has also been calculated that (i) the copper content of the vacuum calcine may be recovered by feeding it into a Peirce-Smith converter during its slag blow, and (ii) the resulting recycling could increase the minor element treatment capacity of a smelter by 100 % while also reducing the blister As content by a factor of three. The experimental results are briefly discussed and a treated dust recycling option is examined. Example operating conditions are presented and available commercial technology for the vacuum calcination of the mixtures is reviewed.

The cobalt production of the Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited was supplemented, from May, 1962, to June, 1964, by processing 3,500 tons of a calcined cobalt-nickel concentrate. This paper describes the reduction roast -aqueous sulphuric acid leach process and the operating practices employed in recovering cobalt, nickel and copper from this oxidized by-product of a lead-copper operation. Incorporated in this paper is a description of how this process was integrated with the existing ammonia leach -hydrogen reduction process for the recovery of nickel and with the soluble cobaltic ammine process for the recovery of cobalt. Introduction T HE Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has recently completed ten years of operation utilizing the ammonia leach process for the recovery of nickel, cobalt and copper from sulphide concentrates, matte and other materials amenable to this process. A continuing development program, along with the expansion of certain facilities, has enabled the refinery to attain a production rate of 31, 000,-000 pounds of nickel per year by hydrogen reduction. This represents an increase of approximately 85 per cent over the original design capacity of the plant.

HUATE® New Style Elutriation Electromagnetic Separator is an equipment to obviously upgrade magnetite. The slurry is fed into separation area through feeder. Generated by excitation coil, the working magnetic field distributes specially in separation area. Under the combined effect of the background field, excitation and demagnetic field and gravity, the mineral particles float downwards in the form of magnetic chains, and interact with the rising water. The gangue, non-magnetic particles, lean intergrowth,etc will be discarded as tailing via overflow tank and pipe. While the magnetic will be discharged from concentrate pipe. Compared with traditional elutriation equipment, it adopts new technologies in removing impurities, operation, large-scale, process simplification, water-saving, remote control, etc. It optimizes the comprehensive beneficiation index, expands its application scope, reduces resource wastes and increases economic benefits.INTRODUCTIONMagnetite accounts for a comparatively great proportion in various iron resources. As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

"For decades, writers have expressed concern about impending shortages of professionals for Canada's minerals industry. Even under the present difficult economic circumstances, it is anticipated that the supply which will be available will not be adequate to meet the requirements in certain key areas including mining and petroleum engineering. It is evident that, unless further initiatives are taken, shortages will exist for some time.In this paper, the writer reviews information which relates to both the demand for, and the supply of, persons with advanced-level education in minerals-related disciplines. In particular, a summary is made of the information regarding supply which has been collected by the CIM General Committee on Education for many years.In concluding, the writer expresses some personal opinions regarding imbalances between demand and supply and offers some recommendations for future actions.IntroductionLast year, in a paper which was presented at the Annual General Meeting of the CIM in Calgary, the writer presented a review of the situation regarding professionally educated manpower for the minerals industry, and concluded that indications were that the gap between demand and supply was widening and that the situation could be expected to continue. Since that time, the deterioration of the nation's economy has caused an appreciable reduction in demand. Simultaneously, a further annual survey by the CIM has shown that the numbers graduating in certain specializations, notably geology and some of the technologies, are rising very rapidly. One of the great concerns of educators at present is that adequate opportunities may not exist for all of those who are now graduating.The danger of the present situation, then, is that a momentary lack of opportunities may cause potential students to choose alternative careers . Because of the lead-time which is involved, it is very possible that this could result in greater shortages during a period of economic recovery or expansion. Action must be taken to ensure that adequate numbers will be attracted to the industry, and this applies particularly to those who have already made the career decision and who are enrolled in minerals-related programs."

Introduction In northern Ontario, refractory clay is found on four rivers of the James Bay watershed: the Abitibi, the Mattagami, the Missinaibi, and the Moose. The clay all belongs to the same geological formation ( the Mattagami of Lower Cretaceous age) , and occurs within a structural depression or 'basin', the boundaries of which have never been defined but which appears to cover at least 1,500 square miles of territory. The recently constructed James Bay extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway crosses the northeast end of the basin at the Onakawana lignite field, which by rail is 126 miles north of Cochrane, 605 miles north of Toronto, and 60 miles southwest of Moose Factory. Smoky Falls, the northern terminus of the railway owned by the Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company, Limited, is 7 miles south of one other point in the basin, i.e., the outcrops of refractory clay, sand, and kaolin at the foot of Long rapids on the Mattagami river. Smoky Falls is 50 miles north of Kapuskasing. In a very early report(l) , Dr. Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada, described '"light coloured marl in horizontal beds" from the Missinaibi river, and noted that the lignite also occurring in the river was probably :associated with the marls. This was undoubtedly the Cretaceous refractory day. Other early writers noted the occurrence of fire-clays, but it was not until Joseph Keele(2), of the Geological Survey, visited thee region in 1919 and studied the clays that their real significance was known.

"The Institute of Applied Geology, Manila, Philippines, is jointly sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippines Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund). It provides, in its fourth year of operation, an interesting example of international cooperation in mineral development. Objectives include: (1) the training of mining engineers in modern techniques of mineral exploration; (2) assisting government and industry in discovering new ore deposits; and (3) providing the basis for the establishment of an economically oriented graduate school of geology at the University, the first of its kind in the country. Training of engineers requires roughly one full year, which is divided between academic study and actual field practice. Lecture and laboratory instruction include courses at university level designed specifically to up-grade those aspects of the geological sciences that are required by mining engineers now qualifying as mineral exploration engineers-economic geology, applied geochemistry, geo-physical exploration, petrology and structural geology. The field training involves direct participation in actual mineral exploration projects arranged with the co-operation of the Bureau of Mines and private interests engaged in mineral development and production. The system works well in practice, and the Institute staff and trainees were responsible for outlining new evidence of economic mineralization. It is also apparent from the application of the exploration methods available to the project -geological mapping, air photo interpretation, magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, self potential and gravity surveying as well as geochemical prospecting -that, under the humid, tropical, mountainous conditions in which the practical program was conducted, air-supported geochemical prospecting with attendant reconnaissance geological mapping affords the most economical and effective approach to mineral exploration for at least some of the deposits characteristic of the region."

Construction and mining worksites pose unique challenges to workers and equipment operators due to their dynamic and unstructured nature. Narrow haul roads, crowded work spaces and presence of workers and equipment in close proximity, combined with large blind spots and overall poor visibility afforded to operators lead to collisions and run-over-type accidents between equipment, workers, and other entities that may be present on the jobsite. Operations that involve machine-infrastructure interaction, particularly in the case of concealed infrastructure such as excavation and drilling lead to unintended strikes between the equipment?s end-effect or and the infrastructure. Such accident-prone scenarios can be avoided by providing operators with real-time feedback and warnings using 3D visualization and proximity monitoring of the entities present in the equipment?s vicinity. Thus the jobsite in the real world is abstracted and represented in a 3D virtual world. However, this requires the ability to create a seamless link between real-world sensors present on the equipment and/or the jobsite and the virtual environment. This paper describes a non-restrictive acquisition allocation framework that allows position and orientation sensor streams from construction and mining job sites to be used for updating 3D virtual scenes in real-time for providing vital collision avoidance warnings to equipment operators.
