"Wholly owned by the Coniagas Mining Company, the oldest continuously listed mining company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, St. Andrew Goldfields is located on Hwy. 101 approximately 30 miles east of downtown Timmins, Ontario. Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. "This study describes the strain behavior in vertical shaft lining (VSL) embedded in thick soil deposits and its application in assessment of concrete deterioration. The observed strain in VSL continuously decreased companied by a sinusoidal fluctuation due to the influences derived from negative skin friction (NSF) and temperature. The increase in strain increment between peak and trough at each year and compressive strain level as the servicing time continued and VSL depth increased implies that the concrete strength was attenuated, and this attenuation was significantly dependent on the existing compressive strain level in VSL. The reliability of the proposed approach was validated by Schmidt Hammer Technique (SHT) – based concrete strength, and is applicable in concrete assessment and then fracturing prediction of VLSs in thick soil deposits.Concrete strength, Field monitoring, Strain behavior, Vertical shaft liningINTRODUCTIONOver 100 VSLs in Southeastern China subjected to an unpredictable fracturing as shown in Figure1, and there are over 1,000 VSLs embedded in thick alluvium su?ering from challenges of damaging and potential fracturing (Cheng, Yang, Zhou, Li, & Hu, 1993; Zhou, Cui, Lv, Huang, & Chen, 1999; Li & Li,2005). Therefore, a reliable assessment of these VSLs is significant to the normal servicing of mine shafts and the recycle of underground space when these mine shafts were closed.The continuous increasing of NSF induced by the drainage of water–saturated deposits well interpreted such extensive fracturing phenomenon, and it is universally regarded as the governing indicator to determine the VSL stabilization (Cheng et al., 1993; Zhou et al., 1999). Based on this recognition, the fracturing prediction and VSL strengthening according to the field monitoring on hydrogeological characteristics, servicing environments, and mechanical behaviors of VSL were carried out (Zhao, Zhou, Zhong, Zhu, & Liang, 2009; Liang et al., 2009; Xie, Lv, & Wu, 2014). As known, the compressive strain level in VSL and the in–situ strength of VSL concrete were the main factors to perform such fracturing prediction. However, the existing studies in literatures were limited to the strain accumulating or releasing behaviors (Zhao, Zhou, Zhao, Kuang, & Hu, 2017), and lack of considering the VSL concrete strength and its attenuation. In this reported study, the in–situ monitoring data on the strain in typical VSLs and the VSL elevations between 2004 and 2014 were initially analyzed. Then, an observed strain behaviors–based approach was developed to quantitatively evaluate the VSL concrete deterioration."

Information exchange for mine process optimization is essential. Today, modern mining equipment uses the IREDES standard to exchange production plans and reports for easy management and storage. To gain further benefits from process optimization, a mine wide access to real-time information is needed as e.g.: The current status of a machine, operational details etc. Presently, real-time data exchange systems are developed by machine producers. Each machine producer uses its own way of gathering, managing, and storing production data. These proprietary mining processes increase the complexity of cross platform data exchange and management for mines which involves machines produced by different vendors. Casting and unifying the data requires much effort. For this purpose, ?IREDES On-line? currently is being introduced. The standard defines an open, web based method for the exchange of volatile real time machine information. Two different principles are used: Web Services for cross platform information exchange within the IT world and the optional OPC UA for use with automation and process control systems. With such a standard information from machines of different vendors may be managed by using one common platform without spending the effort for dedicated interface development. Additionally, information management and storage will become straight forward since all the data are of the same format. The IREDES On-line standard utilizes the latest IT technologies as well as the knowledge and experiences gained from the previous IREDES standard. The paper explains the benefits, the use, as well as the technical design of the standard and gives application examples from the practice.

Particle shape characterisation has an important role to play in mineral processing, to clarify effects of shape on rheology, equipment wear rates, comminution, classification, sizing and flotation. However in industry, shape characterisation is not routine, and the most commonly used shape descriptor in the field (circularity/ angularity/ sphericity) is not invariant. This study aims to investigate shape measurements for a fine particulate ore sample measured with different analytical devices. Two Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy devices with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (FEI QEMSCAN® and Zeiss Mineralogic®), and a camera based image-sizer using dynamic image analysis (Retsch CAMSIZER® XT) were compared. Each device was used to analyse the shape characteristics of specific particles in both a coarse sample (–212/+150 µm) and a fine sample (-53 µm) of UG2 platinum ore. Circularity and Roundness frequency distributions obtained from the three devices were then compared. For selected individual particles, circularity showed higher variability than roundness, and the sample circularity distributions obtained by the three devices were completely different. It is clear that circularity data from different studies relying on different devices should not be compared on an absolute scale. The shape parameter roundness was found to be a more robust descriptor than circularity, and it can give a stronger indication of a particulate sample’s shape characteristics on an absolute scale. However, there were still significant differences in the roundness measurements obtained by the CAMSIZER XT and the two Auto-SEM devices, which was attributed to the dissimilar mechanisms of image capture.

"Fatigue and corrosion fatigue measurements were carried out on five commercially available metals -four steels and an aluminum alloy -which are used as structural materials in mine shaft conveyances. In the corrosion fatigue measurements, drain waters collected in the shafts of three different Canadian mines were used as corrodents. The mine waters had been selected on the basis of their relatively large differences in acidity and/ or composition.It was found that the corrosion fatigue strengths of the four steels were similar, despite their differences in tensile properties, and that the type of water used in the tests had little effect on the results. Mild steel showed the highest and most consistent values of the damage ratio (ratio between the corrosion fatigue and the plain fatigue strengths at 107 cycles). The corrosion fatigue behaviour of the aluminum alloy (ASTM Type 6061-T6) was found to differ markedly in the three mine waters. A high damage ratio (i.e., superior performance) was shown in a mine water in which the corrosion attack was uniform; much lower damage ratios were shown in waters which produced localized corrosion attack. Corrosion rates were too low to be deter-mined conveniently by conventional weight-loss methods, but calculations from polarization curves provided a rapid demonstration that corrosion rates were distinctly lower in the mine water which produced high damage ratios."

Air cooled crackable and conventional forged steel specimens were tested under reversed push-pull conditions to examine the effect of shot-peening on their high cycle fatigue behaviour (-106 cycles). The steels were tested in the normalized as well as shot-peened conditions. The results showed that shot-peening smooth specimens had little effect on the fatigue limit of the air cooled forged steels and the detrimental effect of the rougher peened surface was not apparent. Microhardness profiles indicated that the shot peening produced a gradient of compressive residual stresses that was greater than that of the loading stresses, suppressing the anticipated beneficial effect on fatigue life. Crack initiation was more likely to occur below the surface. The results indicate that the surface roughness was not a significant factor in controlling the fatigue lives, since they were essentially the same for the non shot-peened and shot-peened steels.

Since the early 1990s, the Canadian mining industry has been increasingly defined by the signing of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) between mining companies and Aboriginal peoples. While these agreements are intended to complement the legal system, they also serve to establish the legitimacy of mining projects and to encourage the harmonious integration of these projects into their social and environmental contexts. Beyond their practical implications, what are the effects of such agreements on the ability of Aboriginal communities to access the institutional space where the authorization of mining projects and the conditions of their implementation are decided? Can we view IBAs as a preliminary step towards the operationalization of the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent? This paper aims to explore the potential of IBAs as a sustainable solution to the legitimacy issues that result from the implementation of the formal regulatory framework governing mining activities in this jurisdiction. We highlight what constraints and opportunities the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA) engenders for local communities and draw attention to the ways in which the negotiation of the Raglan IBA and the environmental evaluation processes act upon each other. We find that certain structural problems - and problems of legitimacy ? related to mining in Northern Quebec cannot be solved by the sole signature of an IBA, which suggests the need for caution when considering such agreements as a panacea. The Raglan case demonstrates that IBAs, like other modes of regulation relying on the direct interface between companies and communities, would benefit from a stricter framework and more explicit ties with official regulation channels.

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

"Conveyed coal flows have been diverted on the basis of real time ash analysis since the 1980s. Many coarse particle separation methods are available through screens, jigs, heavy media separation, particle sorters, to name a few, however bulk diversion requires a representative, continuous analysis to ensure diversion decisions can be made with confidence. Sensors also need to be able to provide measurements at useful time increments so that small tonnages can be diverted for maximum selectivity. Particle separation typically requires high capital costs and there are limitations either in throughput tonnage or particle size or both. Few techniques are able to provide robust and representative analysis of conveyed flows in a useful time basis. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis provides multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials and has been proven in the minerals industry since 2003. This paper outlines the success of this technology in minerals applications in iron ore, phosphate rock and most recently in copper-gold ores, including its use in bulk diversion.INTRODUCTION Naturally occurring quality variability, or heterogeneity, in mineral deposits enables separation and recovery of the valuable components through mining and processing operations. There are distinct advantages in processing the minimum quantity of material to achieve the highest possible yield. Unfortunately, declining ore grades has resulted in larger scale operations and a subsequent loss in selectivity for mining operations. As limits are approached on the practical size of equipment, there is more motivation to investigate alternative solutions. Mining companies are subject to increasing social resistance to growing waste disposal requirements in addition to higher energy and transport costs. Major savings are available by reducing the quantities of material processed where pre-concentration can be effectively applied at early stages in the process. One of the simplest ways to pre-concentrate is to measure the bulk material and reject waste soon after mining so that minimal expense is incurred and that only higher quality material is sent to processing operations. This bulk sorting can occur within the mining operations and has major benefits through energy and other consumables savings. This paper discusses the application of real time analysis technologies suitable for bulk sorting within the minerals industry. Technology that has proven representative for conveyed material bulk analysis and its successful applications to date is explained. Analysis using a sensing technique is only one component of a successful bulk sorting process; the importance of effective diversion systems and a bulk sorting strategy are also discussed. The bulk sorting stage may be one component of a system that could include additional downstream technologies such as particle based sorting systems on a diverted stream."

STEEL ROPE WIRE is one of the more specialized commodities among the many grades of highcarbon steel wires. In its production there are many metallurgical aspects of interest from the steelmaking on through the final stages of wire drawing. We produce rope wire in an integrated mill com prising all the operations from the blast furnaces to finished wire drawing in the wire mills. Steelmaking is carried out with close control on hot metal, selection of scrap, and fluxing materials. The basic open hearths are of 170 tons capacity. Steel is teemed into 19 1/2 in by 19 1/2 in big-end-down molds and is hot-topped with the use of clay refractory hot-tops. The weight of this ingot is 6,900 pounds. All high -carbon steel ingots are charged hot into the soaking pits and are then rolled through the blooming mill in 16 p asses to a bloom ax~ in. by 41/2 in. and approximately 65 feet long. Necessary bottom and top crops are taken on the bloom as it passes from the blooming? mill to the billet mill. The still hot bloom is continuously rolled through the billet mill in . 5 passes to a 2 3/8 in. square. Billets are cut to 32 feet in length by a flying shear and then allowed to cool on the hot bed.

"Abstract -Mineral deposits and prospects of the Pan African Saldanian orogenic belt in the south­ western Cape Province South Africa, are reviewed. Despite the entire absence of operating base or precious metal mines in the area, this study has established at !east four metal associations that offer enticing exploration potential .The poly-phase deformed, low-grade metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary Malmesbury Group constitutes a complex, poorly understood supracrustal sequence that has been loosely subdivided into the Tygerberg, Swartland and Boland tectono-stratigraphic terranes by northwesterly trending fault zones. Syn- and post-tectonic granitoids of the Cape Granite Suite selectively intruded these terranes. Early S-types preferred the Tygerberg terrane whereas the later I-types dominate the remaining areas. Anorogenic A-type granites, however, occur in all three domains. Known metallization is directly or indirectly related to the intrusives, yet syngenetic deposits are conspicuously absent from the supracrustals. Four metal associations have been identified.•,Cassiterite-wolfrarnite (± Au, Cu, Mo, Fe-sultides) in quartz and quartz/aplite veins hosted by tourmalinized and locally greissenized S-type granite. Similar exo-granitic veins occur in proximal metamorphites.•,Juxtaposed disseminated, stockwork, breccia and vein style Cu-Mo-Fe-(Au)-sultide mineralization hosted by matie to intermediate intrusives of high K calc-alkaline, 1-type affinity.•,Cu-Mo-Au-sultides hosted by hydraulic breccia pipes, stocks and veins occurring in anorogenic A-type alkali feldspar granites and amphibole quartz syenites.•,Scheelite with minor Cu-Mo-sulfides and Au-associated with endo- and exo-skarns spatially related to I-type monzogranite, granite and alkali feldspar granite .The first three associations occur along the Yzerfontein-Helderberg-Zone, a 180 km lineament in the Tygerberg terrane, a zone exploited by syn-, late- and post-tectonic intrusives and their related mineralization. The fourth association is typical of the Boland terrane. The spatial and temporal relationships between the various metal associations is interpreted as the result of sequential intrusion of relative early high level S-type, followed by intermediate level I-type and finally anorogenic A-type granitoids during the evolution of a contracting continental margin arc and its inner arc. This plate tectonic setting suggests subduction in an easterly direction underneath the Kalahari craton. The spatial configuration of the various terranes at the present erosional levels is the result of rifting and significant differential vertical displacement following cessation of subduction, a terminal tectonic event possibly synchronous with intrusion of the A-type granitoids.Near surface preserved roof zones and cupolas of both S- and I-type granitoids in the Tygerberg and Boland terranes, respectively, render these areas extremely prospective for Sn, W, Mo and Au mineralization. The presence of intermediate to mafic volcanics, a diversity of calcareous lithotypes and favorable plate tectonic setting of the Malmesbury Group suggest potential for the thus far elusive VMS, MVT and Sedex base metal and minor precious metal deposits."

"The degree of uncertainty associated with a natural diamond resource is important to quantify from the time of discovery through the production lifetime. Data collection occurs during the discovery, exploration, delineation, and production or recovery phases. Quantifying the relationship between data and uncertainty is an important component of project valuation. The value of data is measured as their potential to reduce uncertainty if they are collected. A method is developed using Monte Carlo simulation for predicting resource uncertainty and valuing data during critical phases of development, particularly discovery and exploration. The technique is applied to diamond pipe deposits.RÉSUMÉ Il est important de quantifier le degré d’incertitude associé à une ressource diamantifère naturelle, depuis le moment de sa découverte et durant toute la durée de l’exploitation. La collecte de données se fait durant les phases de découverte, d’exploration, de délimitation, et de production ou de récupération. La quantification de la relation entre les données et l’incertitude est une composante importante de l’évaluation du projet. La valeur des données est mesurée en tant que leur potentiel à réduire l’incertitude si elles sont recueillies. Une méthode a été développée qui utilise la simulation de Monte Carlo pour prédire l’incertitude de la ressource et évaluer les données durant les phases critiques du développement, surtout celles de la découverte et de l’exploration. INTRODUCTION GOLD-BEARING placers of Alaska and the Yukon Territories are buried under a layer of permanently frozen alluvial overburden, or 'muck', which varies in depth from twenty to one hundred feet. The placers, and the decomposed bedrock layers upon which they are deposited, are also permanently frozen. During the summer, surface muck which is exposed to the sun will thaw, but only to a depth of a few feet. To reach a valuable deposit, the frozen overburden must be either penetrated with shafts, or stripped from the deposit entirely. In either case, before the placer can be mined, it must be thawed. At modern dredging operations, the frozen muck is stripped from the placer by powerful jets of water from hydraulic giants. The placer, and several feet of decomposed bed-rock, are then thawed by forcing water through narrow pipes which have been driven into the deposit. Other methods of thawing frozen placers were used extensively during the early years of the Klondike 'gold rush', but experimentation later proved that creek water at its natural summer temperature was a more effective and economical thawing medium than any other which had been used. EVOLUTION OF COLD WATER THAWING Early prospectors of the far north reached placers by digging shafts through the frozen muck. They then thawed the placer sand and gravel by building wood fires at the bottom of the shafts.

The Stillwater Mining Company operates an integrated mines, mill, smelter and base metals refinery complex in Montana, USA for the production of a high-grade platinum group metals (PGM) bearing concentrate, nickel sulphate crystal and cathode copper from the PGM-containing nickel-copper converter matte. The complex was constructed in stages over several years, starting with the mine and the mill, followed by the smelter and finally, a base metals refinery, which was commissioned in 1996. Due to the relatively small quantity of matte production, a straightforward refinery process was initially selected to extract the base metals, which reported to a mixed nickel-copper solution for further treatment off-site, and yielded a high-grade PGM concentrate suitable for treatment in a PGM refinery elsewhere. Subsequently, as a result of increased matte production, the process was modified to separate the nickel and copper, and to produce a nickel sulphate salt and cathode copper. This paper describes the design and operation of the original and the modified processes utilized in the base metals refinery (BMR).

Northern Australia has been home to uranium mining for over 70 years, more or less continuously. In the early days, post World War 2, there was little effort made to remediate workings at the end of operations. The three “campaigns” of uranium mining (1951-55; 1960-70; and 1979-present) are all now in various stages of remediation. This includes not only the large legacy site at Rum Jungle but also smaller fields like the South Alligator Valley, as well as contemporary works at Nabarlek and the ongoing closure at Ranger– Australia’s longest operating uranium mine. This paper briefly describes some of the past remediation activities before providing an update on the Ranger closure programme and future timetable.

Abstract - The basis of the tomographic velocity imaging technique is briefly described and an application of the method to detect and image a cross-section through a chromite pod is presented. Using the chromite application as an example, the relative costs of tomographic data acquisition and processing are compared with those of diamond drilling to obtain similar resolution. A number of different tomographic survey configurations and the potential role of the method in surface and underground exploration are discussed.

The thermodynamics of the reactions taking place are examined with the aid of equilibrium diagrams for the Pb-O-S system. Based on investigations of chemical, mineralogical and differential-thermo analyses of intermediate products of different desulphuration degrees, an attempt is made to explain the mechanisms of the reactions in the smelting shaft of the KIVCET furnace. The differences between this and other direct lead smelting processes are demonstrated by these thermodynamic and kinetic considerations. Proceeding from these results, the practicability of direct lead smelting processes is discussed with reference to the composition of the primary feed materials to be processed. This comparison also considers the behaviour of minor metals, the products obtained and their characteristics in respect to further treatment. For assessing the operating costs, the over-all energy consumption is considered taking into account various price relations between electric energy and fuels/reductants. Based on the peculiarities of the various processes, an attempt is made to compare the necessary means of meeting the pollution control requirements. The paper concludes with reference to the criteria and problems involved in comparable evaluations.

"Les réultats obtenus dans les sols sur quatorze aires d'essai et six cheminements régionaux dans I'A bitibi-Témiscamingue indiquent clairement qu'il existe des variations régionales importantes dans les teneurs en éléments traces de l'horizon A1 formé sur l’épais recouvrement glacio-lacustre de cette région. Les anomalies obtenues correspondent à celles qui ont été décelées lors de précédents levés des eaux souterraines et du till de base.Selon les critères d'évaluation utilisés, treize des quatorze aires d'essai ressortent comme anomales dans Ie contexte abitibien; dix de celles-ci sont tres anomales. Ceci suggère fortement qu'un levé régional de sols, fondé sur une approche multi-éléments, identifierait entre 70 et 90 % des cibles géochimiques reconnues par des échantillonnages en profondeur. Les résultats d'un échantillonnage systématique effectué sur une région de 1000km2 viennent aussi appuyer cette hypothèse. Conséquemment, les sols formes sur les sédiments glacio-lacustres sont un médium très utile pour inventorier de grandes regions recouvertes par ce typ e de sédiments.L 'horizon A1 est Ie plus utile pour ce type de levé parce qu'i1 est facil e d échantillonner, qu 'it assure une plus grande constance du typ e de matériel échantillonne et qu'il contient des teneurs accrues.De multiples mécanismes de dispersion géochimique ont joué des rôles d 'importance variable pendant et après la mise en place des sédiments glacio-Iacustres. Les plus importants sont la pression hydrostatique, la diffusion chimique et électrochimique ainsi que la bio-accumulation.
