Underground mine planning practices are typically manual and time consuming and will often produce sub-optimal solutions due to the application of generic rule-of-thumb assumptions or ?tried and tested? choices. The development of computer-automated tools for underground mine planning enable a wide range of scenarios to be considered rapidly in arriving at an optimised solution, subject to input assumptions. We have applied these tools to demonstrate ?optimised? solutions that challenge industry standard practices. Further, we have incorporated grade and price/cost uncertainty into these tools to gain an understanding on how the consideration of uncertainty may further alter strategy selection. Finally, we enable the tools to dynamically adjust cut-off grades in conjunction with the evolution of prices/cost.

"The development of the Cerro Verde, Amplats Mogalakwena and Boddington projects over the last few years has helped to establish the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in comminution circuit designs in large-scale hard-rock applications. The increasing acceptance of this innovative and sometimes controversial technology has had the natural effect of prompting many other new projects to examine HPGR as an alternative to the established, usually SAG-based, comminution circuit design approach.At the current stage of development of the technology, HPGR-based circuit capital costs are generally higher than for the equivalent SAG-based circuit, so that HPGR must offer sufficient operating cost benefits to offset the additional capital costs over an acceptable pay-back period. It is usually necessary to undertake comprehensive project-specific trade-off studies to quantify this effect.This paper describes the processes involved in the execution of a typical SAG-HPGR trade-off study, from the preliminary assessment of ore characteristics and project criteria, through testwork, circuit modelling, equipment selection and cost estimates, to a project-economics comparative assessment of the options. The trade-off study determines both the technical feasibility of the respective technologies and their commercial viability in the given project setting.The paper concludes with a cautionary note to the effect that, while HPGR has many potential benefits, it is not a panacea, and that, for some ore types and project conditions, the more established conventional technologies are often more appropriate."

"A new process for treating scheelite for the production of tungstic tri-oxide is described. The novelty of the process resides in that an ion-ex-changer is used to convert sodium tungstate to either ammonium tung-state or tungstic acid.The process consists of a conventional hydrochloric acid leach of the scheelite concentrate, and the dissolution of the impure tungstic acid thus produced with sodium hydroxide at pH 8. The sodium tungstate solution is clarified and passed through a column of Dowex 50Wx8 ion-ex-change resin to exchange the sodium ions for either hydrogen or ammonium ions, both being suitable. The tungsten-bearing column effluent is evaporated to crystallize the tungsten as ammonium tungstate; the crystals are washed with nitric acid and water and decomposed by heat to pro-duce tungstic trioxide of high purity.Ninety-six per cent of the tungsten in the concentrate may be re-covered as tungs tic trioxide (W03), and the reagents consumed are 0.7 g HCl, 0.41 g NaOH and either 1.73 g NH.Cl or 225 g HCl per gram of tungsten."

"The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

"In the present research, a deposited brown coal fly ash was used as raw material for geopolymer. The reactivity of the fly ash was altered using mechanical activation, which is one of the promising methods to improve bulk and surface reactivity. The mechanical activation experiments were carried out in a high energy density mill using 5 m/s circumferential speed, and various residence times (1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 60 min). The effect of mechanical activation on particle size distribution was measured by a laser particle size analyzer and structural changes using FT-IR. Geopolymer samples were prepared from mechanically activated fly ash with an alkali solution. The progress of geopolymerisation was monitored using an Isothermal Conduction Calorimeter. The heat flow curve obtained indicated that reactions were more prominent and started much earlier in the mechanically activated samples. This observation is further supported by the compressive strength results which also improved in geopolymers using mechanically activated fly ash. Based on the obtained results, it can be inferred that mechanical activation is a possible way to enhance the reactivity of fly ash and consequently properties of resulting geopolymers.INTRODUCTIONCoal fired power plants generate fly ash and slag in huge amount worldwide, about 780 million tons/year (Heidrich et al. 2013). Due to the relatively low utilization rate, enormous quantities of these wastes are landfilled in ponds. The fly ash is the finest grained particle fraction of the solid ash, which is transported with flue gas, and removed by electrostatic or bag filters. The fly ash has pozzolanic activity, it does not react with water, but in the presence of calcium hydroxide solution hardens and solidifies, producing a reaction product practically insoluble in water (Opoczky, 2001). The most important property of the fly ash regarding geopolymerization is its reactivity, which depends on the chemical and phase composition, the dispersity (specific surface area, particle size distribution), and the morphology of the fly ash particles, and determined by the physical properties and chemical composition of the fly ash. Geopolymers concerning their chemical structure are polysialates, where the sialate (silicon-oxoaluminate) network is built up from the bonds of Si-oxide and Al-oxide by sharing oxygen atoms (Davidovits, 1988)."

Exploration strategies have traditionally considered felsic gneiss complexes of the Canadian Shield sterile. This paradigm is challenged with the discovery of extensive granulite-facies Cu-Au, Fe oxides-bearing hydrothermal systems in the 1.4 Ga Bondy and 1.5 Ga La Romaine volcano-plutonic complexes of the Grenville Province. Early identification of magnetite-rich units in association with meta-exhalite and pelite-like units was key to targeting the search for mineralization, protolith information and indicators of pre-metamorphic hydrothermal activity during regional surveys of these frontier terrains. Textural evidences for a volcano-plutonic setting were found. There remained, however, numerous impediments to the recognition that the ubiquitous magnetite-laden units and associated aluminous gneiss were hydrothermal in origin. Many metamorphic reactions form magnetite at the amphibolite to granulite facies transition, and hydrothermally-leached rocks resemble metapelite or migmatitic restite, while carbonate alteration zones may look like marble or calc-silicate rock. Non-typical metamorphic mineral assemblages, modes and colours arise when hydrothermally-derived rock types are metamorphosed. These effective markers served as tools for reliable field identification of hydrothermally-altered rocks. In our case-studies, we traced pre-metamorphic hydrothermally-driven Fe-oxide precipitation in association with sericitization, albitization, pyrophyllite alteration, chloritization, and B enrichment by mapping unusually high contents of (1) magnetite or hematite, (2) biotite, (3) albite, (4) sillimanite, (5) orthopyroxene or phlogopite with cordierite, and (6) tourmaline or kornerupine. The unveiled garnetite, tourmalinite, and aluminous gneiss had assemblages that vary according to metamorphic grade and composition. To assess if high mode of Fe-Mg-Al phases resulted from partial melting (restitic residue) or metamorphism of hydrothermal rocks, we compared leucosome mineral assemblages, shape and amount with that expected of in situ partial melting reactions. In both areas there is no compelling evidence for these units to be restites. In contrast, the presence of lapilli in garnet-cordierite-sillimanite gneiss, though extremely rare, constitutes conclusive evidence for extreme pre-metamorphic high-sulphidation alteration of a volcanic protolith, while Fe-oxides or sillimanite-bearing nodules and veins record a less pervasive alteration. Geochemical research on element mobility and mass balance calculations further testified of an hydrothermal origin for these gneisses. The magnetite-rich units, together with calc-silicate rocks, garnetite, hornblendite, albitite among amphibolite, provided effective guides to sites of fluid discharge and led to the discovery of Cu and Cu-Au showings. With the presence of highsulphidation alteration, these features suggest early Cu-Au VHMS-type alteration halos within a predominantly felsic composite volcano-plutonic arc setting for both case-studies. Evidences for subsequent F-driven orthomagmatic fluid activity are also present.

Modern underground mines operate fleets of mobile production equipment including drill jumbos, long-hole drills, load-haul-dump machines, trucks and bolters. Their availability has a substantial impact onto production cost and thus onto mine profitability. Through appropriate collection of pertinent data and information, use of adequate performance measures and their analyses, mine operators can identify the most promising and cost effective opportunities to get more from their equipment and to reduce the overall cost. This paper presents results of the study aimed to review and analyse means and measures used to quantify equipment availability and its contributing factors (reliability, maintainability and maintenance support) in several Canadian underground mines. It overviews current reporting procedures, sources, quality and quantity of the data and information collected as well as examines performance measures and their definitions used by the surveyed mines. Problems concerning data acquisition as well as meaningfulness and usefulness of the above mentioned metrics are also discussed. The paper concludes with some suggestions and recommendations concerning several aspects of equipment availability assessment. It is believed that the latter may become a more useful tool for mine operators in their efforts to reduce production cost than it seems to be the case at present.

The general recycling process of tungsten scrap to produce tungsten raw materials (tungstic acid, ammonium paratungstate (APT) and WO3) have been carried out by the oxidation, milling, sodium-fusion, dissolution, and extraction processes. Many studies on the high temperature oxidation of tungsten scrap have investigated various aspects such as swelling kinetics, fracture resistance, and the effect of alloying composition. However, the accelerating factors on the scrap oxidation rate during oxidation were not considered here. In general, oxidized products were fused with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide to produce Na2WO4. Later in the process, solid Na2WO4 was dissolved in water. This process required considerable reaction time and was a costly process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to increase the solubility of solid oxidized products to produce Na2WO4 solution by hydrothermal reflux method. Na2WO4 solution was used to produce CaWO4 and H2WO4 by general chemical reactions with calcium chloride and hydrochloric acid. Ammonia solution was also added to the tungstic acid to produce APT. In this study, the effect of ammonia addition on the APT precipitation process was investigated in detail.

Boliden Harjavalta has operated a copper flash smelter since 1949 thus the smelter celebrates 70th anniversary of flash smelting in 2019. This paper shortly describes the historical perspective of the smelter and gives an update of the current operational issues and process modifications made during the recent years. The plant has carried out several major investments lately providing a firm view on the future. A new landfill area for the final slag was commissioned in 2018. A modernization of the concentrate storage area, a new acid plant and a debottlenecking project of the smelting line have been recently commissioned. At the same time, the tankhouse capacity will be expanded. This paper focuses on smelter modernizations. INTRODUCTION Boliden is a metal company operating mainly in northern Europe with core competencies in the fields of exploration, mining, smelting and metal recycling. Boliden Harjavalta, located in Finland, is part of the Smelters Business area of the Boliden Group and operates a copper and nickel smelter with related sulphuric acid plant in Harjavalta, and a copper refinery in Pori. As a short historical review, Harjavalta’s history may be dated back to the year 1910 when the Outokumpu ore body in eastern Finland was discovered. By the end of 1913, a copper mine was in operation and a copper plant based on Hybinette process was ready for commissioning. Due to difficulties in metal recoveries and throughput the Hybinette process was permanently shut down in 1929, and 100% of the mining production was sold as concentrate abroad. As the mine production increased steadily, a decision of a new smelter was made in early 30’s. In 1936 Outokumpu’s copper smelter based on electric smelting was commissioned in Imatra. The smelter was dismantled and transferred to Harjavalta during the final stages of the Second World War. The copper refinery started in Pori already in 1941 and the first copper anodes were cast in Harjavalta in 1945. First sulphuric acid plant started operation in 1947. Due to the post-war shortage of electrical energy, the plant metallurgists initiated a major development work to start exploiting the latent heat of concentrates. Thus, the flash smelting method was developed in Harjavalta and commissioned in 1949. Ten years later, flash smelting was also applied for nickel concentrates. Table 1 summarizes major historical and technical milestones of Harjavalta. The history of flash smelting is described in details in another paper of this conference (Jåfs et al., 2019).

"The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Abitibi greenstone belt of Northwest Quebec, Canada. The mill operates presently at a throughput of 8,250 tpd with gold grade varying between 1.8 and 2.2 g/t. The ore is very high in gravity recoverable gold (GRG) at about 92% and as such a significant emphasis was placed on the gravity circuit. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with about 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. Over the course of the first several years of production, several gravity audits were carried out. In 2009, a complete gravity audit was completed, including ore, classification, Knelson Concentrators, and the gold room. In 2011, an audit was undertaken of the flotation circuit to determine the efficiency by which GRG is floated. Large samples of flotation feed and tails were collected and process for GRG content. This allowed a link between gravity and overall recovery to be made. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold"

"This paper describes the benefits and disadvantages of fully autogenous grinding when compared to grinding with steel grinding media. The study is a real case study based on a low tonnage, high grade mining project in a remote location in a developing country. The study compares the capital and operating costs of using either SAG mill, Ball mill, Crusher (SABC) or fully autogenous (AG) grinding circuits and produces an economical analysis of the project for both options. The economics have been developed for the overall project, including mining, processing, environmental and the infrastructure as well as for the additional cost of constructing a fully autogenous grinding circuit instead of the original plan of a SAG Mill, Ball Mill circuit.The paper also describes the development of the autogenous grinding circuit at Outokumpu Oy, Pyhäsalmi mine. This experience was used to design the autogenous grinding circuit for the case study. Pyhäsalmi Concentrator has over 30 years of experience in operating autogenous grinding circuits and therefore provides a sound base for the new circuit design.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ore using steel grinding media is currently the most commonly used method in the mining industry. Autogenous grinding, ore replaces iron media, is also common especially in Europe and Africa. Iron ore industry in North America uses autogenous grinding in primary and/or secondary stages extensively. In gold, copper and other base metal industries, autogenous grinding is not as common, although there are operations where pebble grinding is or has been used in the secondary grinding stage. There are many variations of autogenous grinding in use in the mining industry. These variations include different mill sizes, mill length to diameter ratios, ore lump sizes, screening and pebble crushing configurations."

"Zn-Pb sulfide mineralization at Abbeytown mine and Twigspark quarry comprise the only known car¬bonate-hosted base metal sulfide deposits in the Sligo syncline, northwest Ireland. Limestone sedimentation occurred uniformly throughout the region during the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) as observed by field relationships and lithofacies; however, petrographic and stable isotope evidence indicate that host-rock dolomitization occurred under different conditions at localities to the west and east of the Ox Mountains inlier, suggesting significant uplift and geologic isolation of these areas prior to dolomitization. Localized fluid flow systems are thought to be responsible for sulfide mineralization and associated epigenetic carbonate cements. West of the Ox Mountains inlier at Abbeytown, evidence of three geochemically distinct fluids are observed: (1) a lower-temperature, lower-salinity fluid (70°-130-°C, 4-9 wt.% equiv. NaCl); (2) a lower-temperature, higher-salinity fluid (70°-140°C, 15-24 wt.% equiv. NaCl); and (3) a higher-temperature, moderate-salinity fluid (165°-220°C, 8-14 wt.% equiv. NaCl). Similar fluid types were observed at the Twigspark deposit. The source of the higher-salinity fluid is likely seawater evaporated to near the point of halite precipitation. The higher-temperature fluid is thought to have been derived from deep circulation of basinal brines. It is speculated that mixing of the higher-salinity fluid with the high-temperature fluid was vital for ore formation at Abbeytown because fluid inclusions in sphalerite have homogenization temperatures and salinity values that fall along a mixing trajectory of these end member fluids. Also, areas where the high-salinity end member fluid is absent are barren of sulfides. Less complex fluid systems are indicated for sites east of the Ox Mountains inlier where no sulfide mineralization was observed. Data from base metal sulfide prospects in northwest Ireland indicate no connection with the regionally extensive flow system thought to be responsible for Zn-Pb deposits throughout the Irish Midlands.Les minéralisations en sulfures de Zn-Pb de la mine Abbeytown et de la carrière Twigspark sont les seules gîtes de métaux usuels à encaissant carbonaté connus dans le synclinal de Sligo, au nord-ouest de l’Irlande. Ces carbonates se sont déposés d’une manière uniforme dans la région au Carbonifère inférieur (Mississippien) tel que l’indiquent les relations de terrain et les lithofaçiès; les données pétrographiques et d’isotopes stables indiquent toutefois que la dolomitisation de l’encaissant s’est faite sous des conditions différentes aux localités situées à l’ouest ou à l’est de la boutonnière des Ox Mountains, ce qui suggère un soulèvement et une isolation géologique significative de ces secteurs avant la dolomitisation. L’action de systèmes de circulation locaux sont considérés être à l’origine de la minéralisation sulfurée et des ciments carbonatés épigénétiques qui leur sont associés. À Abbeytown, à l’ouest de la boutonnière des Ox Mountains, on note les effets de trois fluides géochimiquement distincts: (1) un fluide à basse température peu salin (70°-130°C, 4-9% poids équivalent NaCl); (2) un fluide à basse température fortement salin (70°-140°C, 15-24% poids équivalent NaCl); and (3) un fluide formé à plus haute température et salinité modérée (165°-220°C, 8-14% poids équivalent NaCl). "This paper aims at enriching a homogenization-based anisotropic damage model for hard rocks under complex loading. A new damage criterion is proposed to capture material strain softening. Within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we are particularly concerned with two strongly coupled dissipative mechanisms: frictional sliding and damage by microcracking, which usually take place at cracks within cohesive geomaterials under compression. Focusing on the representative elementary volume containing multiple crack families, the free enthalpy of the matrix-cracks system is obtained. Importantly, a back-stress term is involved in the local stress applied to microcracks. This back stress plays the hardening/softening role in the friction criterion which is formulated at local scale. Strain hardening owns to the accumulation of frictional shearing and dilatancy while strain softening is caused by crack growth. The multiscale damage model is used to simulate laboratory tests on the Westerly granite under true triaxial compressions. INTRODUCTIONWhen subjected to compressive loads, hard rocks present nonlinear mechanical behaviors and induced material anisotropies. In that process, two main dissipative mechanisms have been largely identified: damage by crack growth and frictional sliding along closed crack faces, which are usually strongly coupled to each other on crack scale. Theoretical investigations have shown that the damagefriction coupling analyses allow explaining a large number of experimental phenomena involved in brittle or quasi-brittle materials. Concerning constitutive modeling, the standard Eshelby’s solution-based homogenization procedure for heterogeneous materials was recently applied successfully to describing the mechanical and poromechanical behaviors of cracked frictional solids."

The competitive pressure, the increasing energy costs and the environmental regulations impose substantial challenges to the definition of power plants serving industrial facilities. Primary mining and metallurgical facilities have even greater challenges because they are often located remotely, where the fuel supply can be a problem. The absence of a power grid imposes challenges on the reliability and quality of the electrical energy supply. In addition, the facilities usually require thermal energy too, not only electricity. This paper outlines these types of issues that have to be considered when defining a cogeneration plant integrated with a remote located industrial facility. It is addressed to the ?users? of cogeneration facilities rather than to ?generators.? The focus is on analyzing various site-specific design considerations to pre-screen the feasible cogeneration alternatives and minimize the number of options to be analyzed from the economics viewpoint. This approach could substantially reduce the engineering effort and schedule during the feasibility phase of the project. Part 1 of this paper (Berkley, 2003) provides a basic understanding of cogeneration plants of various types to establish a common language. Part 2 outlines and analyzes specific issues that could be of help in the definition of cogeneration installations for remotely located industrial facilities, with a focus on mining and primary metallurgical plants.

"Over the last few decades, the emphasis on affordability and reduced cost of ownership has necessitated the development of innovative processes to carry out repairs in aero engine components. Conventional weld and braze repairs have evolved into advanced, sophisticated processes using state of the art knowledge in lasers, robotics and materials technology. This paper illustrates past and present scenarios in an attempt to illustrate progress that has been made in this area. The problems encountered in the past have been detailed along with the solutions that have been developed and commercially implemented to address these issues. Apart from technical progress, this presentation also addresses the progress made in business approaches and in Certification/Regulatory issues surrounding aero engine repair. Progress in Technology Repair technologies have also been the embryo from which new and revolutionary manufacturing technologies have evolved as well. Electron Beam Free Forming and LENS are examples of how a completely new manufacturing concept can evolve what was originally only a process to join metals. The current and future potential of these spin offs is discussed providing examples of application. While several problems have been solved over time with the implementation of advanced repair technologies, the demands of the industry have created new challenges. "The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is temporally and spatially related to the emplacement of a late Cretaceous granodiorite-tonalite stock in southeastern British Columbia and contains an estimated 49 million tonnes grading O.I9% MoS2- No metal zonation patterns are apparent, with the exception of peripheral tungsten skarn, and exploration was guided largely by geological interpretation. It is typical of the granodiorite, or fluorine-poor type of molybdenum deposit. Molybdenite is contained within a quartz-feldspar vein stockwork and coeval dissemination in igneous (and less commonly metasedimentary) hosts. In general, molybdenite is strongly associated with alkali feldspars, but in detail it is intimately associated with incipient muscovite replacement of albite and K-feldspar; veins that lack feldspars are also typically barren of molybdenite. These textures suggest that fe/dspathic alteration (and precipitation in veins) was an important precursor to mineralization, and the occurrence of similar textures elsewhere (e.g. Henderson) suggest that early feldspathic alteration is important to the genesis of molybdenum deposits in general. Molybdenite deposition at Trout Lake was preceded by contact metamorphism, skarn and potassic alteration, and was overprinted by muscovite-ankerite (phyllic) alteration. Only moderate temperature changes are recorded by the metamorphic and alteration mineral assemblages (350°C to 450°C}; however, with time, fluids became increasingly more acidic and enriched in C02- In light of the intimate molybdenitemuscovite intergrowths, the decrease of pH probably exerted a major control on mineralization.IntroductionGranite-hosted molybdenum deposits can be classified in terms of the composition of the related intrusion, e.g., the granodiorite and granite types of Mutschler et a!. (1981), or the calc-alkaline, alkali-calcic, and alkalic types of Westra and Keith (1981). They have also been classified on the basis of their fluorine contents (Theodore and Menzie, 1984) with the fluorine-rich and -poor varieties roughly corresponding to granite- and granodiorite-type deposits, respectively. For economic reasons, most exploration and research has concentrated on the high-grade/large tonnage granite-type of deposit, exemplified by Climax. F1uorine-poor, granodiorite-type deposits are, however, the most common type in Canada and have been mined in the past (e.g., Endako). In this paper, the authors summarize the research that has been carried out on the fluorinepoor Trout Lake deposit (Boyle and Leitch, 1983; Linnen, 1985; Linnen and Williams-Jones, 1987; 1990) and use what has been learned to develop guidelines for the future exploration of fluorinepoor, granodiorite-type molybdenum deposits."

"Pitting corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in groundwater with a ternary inhibitor mixture (phosphonic acid + bivalent cation + various surfactants) was studied with different environmental variables such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and chloride ions. Critical pitting potential and corrosion potential were calculated for these test media using electrochemical techniques. Under the tested condition, the localized corrosion resistance of 304 SS was determined and the results are discussed. IntroductionPitting corrosion of metals and alloys is a major cause of failure in chemical processing desalination plants, scrubber for flue gas desulphurization (FGD) plants, water storage tanks and pipelines, petroleum refineries, etc.Heat exchangers and condensers in inland thermal and nuclear powerplants utilize groundwater as a coolant, but materials of construction are generally prone to localized corrosion.Localized corrosion attack can be initiated when the passive film on the metal is disrupted. The presence of certain aggressive anions such as chlorides (Cl-) can migrate to the actively corroding area and stabilize pitting corrosion. Attention has been focussed on improving the resistance of stainless steel against localizedcorrosion in aqueous environments.One of the most accepted methods of avoiding corrosion is by the addition of chemicals (inhibitors). Over the past two decades, some phosphonic acids have been explored due to their good corrosion inhibition efficiency and low toxicity (Fang et al., 1993; Karman et al., 1998; Rajendran et al., 1998; Gopi and Rajeswari, 2000a). Bivalent cations like Zn2+ are often applied as additives to inhibit the metal dissolution (Sekine and Hirakawa, 1986; Aruna Bahadur, 1998)."

"When confronted with the difficult decisions on advancing an exploration project to the feasibility and construction stages, it is important to know how various regions of the ore body will react in the milling and concentration processes. While bench scale test work is common and inexpensive, the results and information provided are somewhat limited due to the difficulty in accurately predicting the effects of recirculating middling streams or gradual changes in solution chemistry.Conventional Pilot Plants, processing 100 to 1,000 kg/hour of sample ore, provide the detailed engineering data required to develop a final process flowsheet and to size the equipment. They are, however, expensive to set-up and operate, and are really only viable for major projects that are well advancedIn the latter part of 1999, the Mineral Development Center at CVRD (MDC) purchased a new piece of mineral processing equipment which can run continuous flotation tests using drill core samples. To evaluate its performance, and to compare it with conventional testing methods, various types of flotation tests were carried out using two different types of copper ore. The limitations and advantages of open circuit and locked cycle bench tests, as well as the Mini Pilot Plant and the Conventional Pilot Plant were evaluated.Open circuit tests carried out at the bench scale only provide basic information. More complete and trustworthy information is obtained, in terms of the recirculation of flows and reaching a permanent and stable flotation regime, as the dynamics and complexity of the tests increases. The data obtained showed that the MPP’s metallurgical performance was equivalent to that of a conventional pilot plant."

"Recent fluid inclusion and stable isotopic studies in the Bousquet mining district have identified spatial and temporal trends in mineralization temperatures and isotopic compositions of vein forming fluids. These studies indicate that mineralizing temperatures were lower during sterile vein formation (T=200-300°C) than during auriferous vein formation (T = 300-400°C), and that 8 80 values of minerals in sterile veins are lower by 1-3 %o than in associated auriferous veins. In addition to these small differences in 8 80 within individual mineralized zones, a trend of increasing 8 80 values of vein minerals is identified from west to east across the district, with 8 80 of vein minerals increasing by4-6%o. Quantitative evaluation of potential causes of the observed oxygen isotopic shifts suggests that the best explanation for these trends is the derivation of the mineralizing fluids from an isotopically inhomogeneous terrain in which the fluid isotopic compositions are controlled by the isotopic compositions of the host lithologies due to high rock/water ratios in these source terrains. This inhomogeneous source terrain is interpreted as consisting of the Blake River Group volcanics (low 8 80 component) and the adjoining Kewagama and Cadillac Group sediments (high 8 80 component).The genesis of the hydrothermal fluids is attributed to crustal heating during metamorphism, with the fluids representing metamorphic dewatering products and/or fluids incorporated during deposition and burial of the host lithologies. Ductile deformation of the fluid source regions impeded fluid migration during metamorphism; the ultimate release of the mineralizing fluids is attributed to the penetration to depth of vertical structures (fault and shear zones) during brittle deformation of the crust under waning metamorphic conditions. Release of fluids caused by this puncturing of the closed hydrologic source regime produced a localized zone of lowered pressure, drawing fluids from adjacent lithologies toward the fault zones, feeding further hydrothermal fluid upwelling. Au mineralization resulted from chemical processes related to cooling of the hydrothermal fluids and/or interaction with lithologies encountered during fluid migration; the level of crust at which Au deposition occurred likely migrated upward with the thermal anomaly caused by hydrothermal fluid upwelling, eventually reaching the level of current exploitation. Cessation of fluid flow along the vertical structures is attributed to inadequate recharge of the hydrothermal systems as fluid contents were depleted in the lithologies proximal to the vertical structures and/or sealing of the structures by mineral deposition."
