has been no commercial production of either perlite or pumice in British Columbia. Several promising occurrences are known to exist but their development has been delayed due to difficult access and / or remote locations. The Empire Valley perlite deposit is located 120 km east of Clinton. The deposit appears to be a flat-lying volcanic flow 50 to 70 m thick that is part of an Eocene rhyolite and dacite volcanic assemblage. The Francois Lake perlite deposit occurs on the north shore of Francois Lake where perlite is part of a rhyolitic volcanic sequence. The exposure of perlite is about 13 m thick and is considered to be Eocene or Oligocene in age. The Uncha Lake perlite deposit is located about 5 km south Industrial Minerals in Canada of Uncha Lake. Perlite appears to be intercalated with porphyritic rhyolite flows that are comparable to those at Francois Lake. Showings are widespread but poorly exposed and thicknesses are unknown. The Mount Meager pumice deposit is located in the Lillooet River valley at the base of Plinth Mountain. Coarse pumice agglomerate forms a large talus slope that is undercut by the river. Unsorted, angular fragments up to 50 cm in diameter are intermixed with up to 30 per cent of sand and silt-sized particles. The exposed zone is about 200 m long and 50 m high; it is being considered as a source of lightweight aggregate.

The main purpose of this publication is to present relevant advances in processes and technologies of importance for consideration in the design of new refineries and the modernization of existing refinery facilities. Operation at current densities of between 300 A/m2 and 350 A/m2 is already part of the criteria customarily implemented on recent projects. This is due in part to the development of permanent cathode technology. In recent years, this technology has also been integrated with process control and automatic electrode handling and preparation machines. The combined implementation of these technologies has the advantage of enabling the process to be monitored, thus assuring traceability and allowing greater knowledge of the process to accrue.

Gold has received a growing interest as a catalyst for the selective oxidation of organic molecules using oxygen under mild conditions1. In the liquid phase application small gold particles (2.5-7 nm) deposited over different solid supports can be used but, like many other noble metals, their catalytic activity depends upon the nature of the support and the preparation metod2-5. In particular, gold on carbon is the preferred catalyst for the oxidation of the alcoholic 2-7 and the aldehydic7-9 groups and one of the best preparation method is the immobilisation of colloidal particles2-5,8,9. Suggested application of gold catalysis in fine chemicals production, tested on laboratory scale preparations, is reported in table 110. In order to produce more efficient catalysts for the liquid phase oxidation and to derive new insights into the reaction mechanism, we have made a comparison among catalytic systems based on different metals. The first effort was to test the activity, if present, of naked metal particles and then to study the influence of various materials commonly used as a support.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

Powder metallurgy (P/M) technique is known for its capability of producing near-net-shape parts. Its specific characteristics have resulted in low cost and eliminated of many secondary machining. However, more and more P/M parts do require additional operations to fulfil their complex geometric features and surface roughness. Many of the machining factors that influence the machinability of cast and wrought steel parts, such as cutting speed, feedrate, coolant, tool geometry and shape, are also considered in the machining of P/M components. The special feature in P/M structure is the porosity that can decrease the machinability and shorten the tool life. Different variables have been considered in the machinability of P/M materials. Densities and the free machining additive manganese sulphide (MnS), are the two main factors of material composition, which dominate the P/M machining performance. Machining process is the main method that generates the desired working surface of machining components. This paper will discuss the metallurgical structure of the powder metallurgy components, their physical properties and possible issues when encountering machining operation. Turning operation has been tested in this investigation to show the relationship between the cutting speed, federate, cutting forces and chip formation. This investigation also discusses how the free machining additive, manganese sulphide, affects the P/M structure and machinability in order to understand how the metallurgical structure can affect the machining operation and, how to obtain the optimised surface results.

"Minntac is a taconite mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located near the town of Mountain Iron, Minnesota, U.S.A. It is totally owned and operated by USX Corporation and represents its largest source of domestic iron units. Minntac began producing fluxed pellets in 1988 and has produced both acid and fluxed pellets since then. This paper compares the acid and fluxed pellets produced at Minntac. It reviews modifications that have been made to the plant flowsheet and discusses areas recognized for improvement since the beginning of fluxed pellet production. It also comments briefly on the performance of Minntac fluxed pellets in USX blast furnaces and the future of fluxed pellets at Minntac.IntroductionMinntac was built in three steps with each step designed to produce 6 million long tons of acid pellets per year. The actual production has varied though. Figure I shows the production by year at Mirmtac. Step I began production in 1967, Step 2 in 1972 and Step 3 in 1978. Mirmtac produced 16.5 million tons in 1979 but only 3.5 million tons in 1982 when the facility was shut down for six months because of the lack of demand for pellets. Since the initial start up, Mirmtac has produced over 200 million long tons of pellets. Until 1987, all the pellets produced were ""acid"" pellets. In 1987, equipment to produce ""fluxed"" pellets was installed and tested. In 1988, full scale production of fluxed pellets began."

"The design of carbon-in-pulp (CIP), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) adsorption circuits has essentially remained unchanged since the early days of the carbon process for gold recovery. For CIP circuit the pulp residence time is traditionally fixed at one hour per contactor with a carbon concentration of between 15 and 20 grams per litre, and the counter current carbon transfer rates are in the region of 15% pulp recycle. For CIL, the pulp residence time is usually three hours per contact or, with lower carbon concentrations ( 5 to 10 grams per litre).The drawbacks of using the counter current CIP/CIL adsorption circuits are discussed using modeling developed for CIP/CIL plant design. Counter current CIP/CIL, circuits are then compared with the carousel method of adsorption circuit design.The use of equipment suitable for the carousel approach is discussed which is, the AAC cylindrical and pumping (MPS) screens, the AAC pump-cell plant and launder designs.Finally, two plants at the Vaal Reefs Gold Mining and Exploration Company that use carousel adsorption circuits, namely the Vaal Reefs No. 1 Gold Plant, a CIL plant with stepped contactors, and the Vaal Reefs No. 2 Gold Plant, a CIP using a very short residence time (AAC pump-cell) are discussed."

In this paper, the synergism in erosion-corrosion process occurring in oil sand wastewater transportation caused by the interaction of mechanical and electrochemical factors was experimentally investigated. The erosion-corrosion tests were conducted with A1045 steel in synthetic slurries comprising tap water and silica sand. The material loss due to corrosion-enhanced erosion was assessed with the chemo-mechanical model developed by the authors recently. The results indicate that the material loss produced by corrosion-enhanced erosion at the open circuit potential can be formulated as a linear function of logarithm of corrosion current density. The wastage caused by the erosion-enhanced corrosion was analyzed based on the concept of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The material loss induced by the erosion-enhanced corrosion is approximately a linear function of overall erosion rate measured in synthetic slurries, indicating that erosion-enhanced corrosion could be reduced by adopting surface strengthening techniques to improve the resistance to the plastic deformation in surface layer.

"Since the late 1970s, a major R&D program has been under way in Canada to assess the concept of disposing of nuclear fuel wastes in deep plutonic rock. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd . (AECL), a federally-owned corporation, has been given the responsibility of directing this research (Rummery et al., 1983).The Underground Research Laboratory (URL), constructed in a granite pluton 15 km east of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba (Fig. 1) is a major component of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. A diverse geotechnical experimental program is being carried out during both the construction and operating phases of the URL. This program involves detailed geological mapping, rock mechanics and hydrogeology studies, and geophysical surveying, to characterize the rock mass surrounding the shaft, and it has been described by Simmons et al. (1983). As part of the construction-phase program, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys are being carried out during excavation, in an attempt to delineate fractures both ahead of the excavation and behind the walls of the excavation. This paper presents the results of surveys performed during shaft excavation and describes a procedure for plotting the data.Ulricksen (1982) cites examples of radar surveys to evaluate surficial deposits, such as peat, sands and gravels, and cavity detection in subsurface hard rock. Fowler (1981) used radar for fracture and clay vein detection in coal seams.In Canada, pioneering work in GPR has been done by Annan and Davis since the mid-seventies (Annan and Davies, 1976). Their work concentrated on problems relating to permafrost in the Arctic ."

"Reconnaissance geochemical mapping, based on the chemical analysis of waters, stream, and / or lake sediments had its origin in geochemical prospecting surveys carried out in New Brunswick during the 1950s. More recently, reconnaissance geochemical surveys carried out by government agencies for mineral resource appraisal purposes have been seen as a special case of regional geochemical mapping which is carried out with the aim of describing geochemical patterns f or elements which may he interpreted for mineral resource appraisal, environmental or geological purposes. The interpretation of pal/ ems on regional geochemical maps is based on the concepts of landscape geochemistry, in this paper, the regional approach 10 geochemical mapping is described with reference to an experimental regional geochemical survey which was completed in southwest Ontario during 1981-82. "While not taking issue with the general thesis expressed in Dr. Ridge's analysis of the role of genetic concepts versus observational data in ore exploration (Ridge, 1983), the criticism could be offered that the author tends to slight the importance of conceptual (i.e. theoretical) models in mineral exploration.As a general rule, observational data in science lacks significance and utility without a theoretical construct to organize those observations. Theory in turn dictates what observations are made-and which ones are judged important. Thus, for example, prior to the elaboration-and acceptance- of the current model for volcanogenic base metal deposits, the structural aspect s of these deposits were most closely observed and studied by explorationists. The nature of the enclosing rocks and any attendant alteration was given minimal attention, and certainly didn't figure prominently as an exploration guide.Similarly, the importance of alteration features to exploration for porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits was only perceived when a theoretical model was developed to account for these aspects. Indeed, many of these porphyry copper deposits were regarded as epigenetic vein deposits by geologists of an earlier era observing and examining on a different physical scale-and with a different theoretical bias.In constructing and evaluating such conceptual models, explorationists primarily rely on observation data and proximate associations; speculative thoughts as to ultimate provenance or crustal evolution clearly play a subordinate role, as Dr. Ridge argues. This, however, should not obscure the fact that concepts and theories do indeed exert a major influence in mineral exploration."

"The Pierre Beauchemin gold deposit, situated 15 km NW of Rouyn-Noranda, produces an average of 1050 tonnes of ore a day. Reserves are 1.2 Mt grading 5.6 g/t Au. The deposit, located in a shear zone within the Flavrianpluton, in the Blake River Group, is hosted by four major rock types: meta-trondhjemite, meta-tonalite, hybrid rocks and meta-diorite (the prefu; ""meta-"" is omitted thereafter). The trondhjemite, tonalite, and metamorphic hybrid rocks are spatially distributed as a series of sub-horizontal tabular sills that form a genetically related group. Early fractures that permitted either the emplacement of pre-diorite felsic dikes or the formation of a visible alteration caused by early fluid circulation might have been developed in response to initial strain created during regional deformation. These fractures were precursors to the emplacement of diorite and the development of major shear planes. Sub-horizontal north-trending en échelon diorite lenses are observed at the mine. Together, these diorite lenses constitute larger scale diorite zones which are observed at the scale of the pluton. The diorite zones are interpreted as evidence of an episode of sub-vertical extension sustained by the layered trondhjemite, tonalite and hybrid system. The anisotropy created by the less competent sub-horizontal en échelon diorite was an important factor. In shear zone development and subsequent mineralization. The tonalite and diorite accommodated further defomation and developed the main N030°/40° ESE shears along with the spatially associated N060°/50°-60° SSE, and the N000°/10°-40° E shear zones. The N000° shears are interpreted as refracted or deflected equivalents of the N030° shears. The combined shears compose the Eldrich shear system which trends approximately N030°/40° ESE and has had a general reverse movement with a minor sinistral component.Gold mineralization occurs in all four major rock types as en échelon sigmoidal shaped lenses associated with the major N030° deformation system. The distribution of ore lenses can be divided into two categories: The first category occupies sub-horizontal diorite zones. The lenses trend N-S, dip 100 40° E, and are associated with shear zones, sub-horizontal fractures or tonalite-diorite contact planes. The second category of lenses is found in felsic granitic rocks; the lenses trend either N0300!40°ESE or N060°/50°-60° SSE. Local hydraulic breccia zones are observed near ore zones occupying felsic granitic rocks. These breccias may have resulted from high fluid pressures brought upon by confinement as a result of impermeable zones in an anisotropic tonalite-diorite system."

Non-energy raw materials are vital inputs for the EU?s economy and maintaining fair and undistorted access to these materials for EU industry and citizens is increasingly difficult. Within the EU, exploration and extraction have to face increased competition for different land uses and a highly regulated environment. While the EU is currently dependent on the importation of many metals, the overall potential for mining and quarrying in Europe is strong. In spite of this, the land area available for extraction in the EU is constantly decreasing, turning access to land into a key challenge for the extractive industry. The EOMINERS project aims at contributing to demonstrate how to improve the EU capacity in implementing new mining sites and their societal and environmental acceptability. The overall aim of EO-MINERS (Earth Observation for Monitoring and Observing Environmental and Societal Impacts of Mineral Resources Exploration and Exploitation) is to bring into play EO-based methods and tools to facilitate and improve interaction between the mineral extractive industry and the society in view of its sustainable development while improving its societal acceptability. EO offers a unique opportunity to collect necessary spatial parameters that play a key role for better assessments of mining-related environmental and societal impacts. It could enable the development of means to identify the site-specific environmental and societal footprints of mineral resource extraction and to determine their respective significance. This understanding of global and cumulative footprints along a causal chain is needed in order to target policy measures. In this way the expected reduction of environmental and societal footprints in the mining sector can be most effective for the environment and more cost-efficient for public authorities and commercial operators. The project first defined environmental, socio-economic, societal, and sustainable development indicators and criteria that can possibly be dealt with using EO techniques. After an analysis of policies related to the environmental and social footprint of mineral industries, project expertise and stakeholder interviews (national and on-site) as well as site investigations led to the establishment of a list of indicators to be monitored, either directly or indirectly, through accessible parameters. Development of EO-based monitoring tools is then carried out over three demonstration sites: the lignite open pit of Sokolov in Czech Republic, the Mpumalanga coalfield centred on the town of Emalahleni (previously Witbank) in South Africa, and the Makmal gold mine in Kyrgyzstan. From these developments, it is subsequently intended to contribute to the development of generic, standardised EO data integration schemes, in particular in view of characterising affected ecosystems, populations, and societies and prepare indisputable documents that will make the basis for a sound ?trialogue? between industry, governmental organisations, and stakeholders. This paper discusses results obtained after three years into the project, focusing on product development over the demonstration sites and their relevance to the observation and monitoring of environmental and societal footprints of the extractive industry.

"Abstract - Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, an important base-metal deposit type in China, occur widely in submarine volcanic districts of variable magmatic affinities. These VMS deposits range in age from Archean to Mesozoic, but most are in Proterozoic and Paleozoic sequences. More than 60% of VMS deposits formed in the Paleozoic, the most important metallogenic eon. Three important Paleozoic VMS-metallogenic provinces include Northern Qilian, Sanjiang and Altai provinces. The Proterozoic constitutes the next important era, but with no VMS deposits in the middle Proterozoic. VMS deposits associated with the Proterozoic volcanic rocks occur around the Yangtze Platform and in the western Kunlun-Qinling. The Triassic is third in importance, with VMS deposits concentrated in the Sanjiang Tethys. The Archean has only one VMS deposit, on the northern margin of the Sino-Korea Platform.Five distinct compositional classes of Chinese VMS deposits have been distinguished: Cu, Cu- Zn (or Zn-Cu), Cu-Fe, Zn-Pb-Cu, and Pb-Zn (-Cu). The Cu, Cu-Co, and Cu-Zn types of deposits occur sporadically from the Archean to Paleozoic, and are closely associated with mafic and ultramafic volcanic sequences. The Zn-Pb-Cu and some Cu-Zn type deposits are restricted to the Paleozoic and Triassic, and are hosted by calc-alkaline felsic rocks in bimodal basalt-rhyolite sequences, whereas Cu-Fe and Pb-Zn type (except for the Laochang deposit) deposits are restricted to the Proterozoic and occur in calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. As large quantities of marine mafic volcanic rocks were deposited in western China, Cu and Cu-Zn deposits are major types of Chinese VMS deposits.Chinese VMS deposits formed in a wide range of paleo-tectonic settings and depositional environments, such as island-arcs, rifts, aulacogens, and ocean ridge hot spots. Among these, the rift and back-arc environments are the most important, containing about 60% of Chinese VMS deposits. Aulacogens are a subordinate environment where most of the Proterozoic VMS deposits formed. The oceanic ridge and hot-spot systems are common in the tectono-magmatic domains in China, but contain only a few small Cu and Cu-Zn type VMS deposits.The Chinese VMS deposits have usually been influenced by both deformation and metamorphism to various degrees, resulting in changes in the shape and metal distribution. Seven representative deposit styles have been recognized: sheets, sheet plus strata-bound stringer, cyclically zoned deposits, mounds, mound-like deposits, strata-bound stringer-disseminated, and stockwork-disseminated deposits. The formation of these various styles of deposits is controlled by several key factors, such as lithology and permeability of the host rocks, focused or unfocused discharge, temperature and chemical composition (e.g., salinity) of hydrothermal fluids, as well as depth of seawater."

"Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. Smelter slags contain valuable metals such as Co, Ni and Cu in proportions of less than 1 wt% along with about 40 wt% of Fe and 15 wt% of Si. Although aqueous SO2 is a versatile lixiviant for transition metals, dissolving the slag in aqueous SO2 produces solutions in which Co and Ni concentrations are lower than that of Fe due to the low metal/ Fe ratio in the slag. To develop the options for increasing Co and Ni concentrations the solubility of slag in aqueous SO2 was studied experimentally and theoretically using OLI, a software package for simulating electrolytes chemistry. The modeling results correlated well with experimental results. The model suggested that the species dominating the system was FeSO3, which would precipitate out as FeSO3.3H2O when the concentration of Fe+2 reached 1.22 molal and the concentration of S032- was beyond 1.4 molal. In the experiments the influence of pH and solids loading were studied. The leach solution obtained after dissolution of slag at 50% solids loading had a pH of 1.85. On raising the pH to 3, precipitation occurred. Analysis of the solution collected after the addition of alkali showed over 50% reduction of Fe, Co and Ni. XRD analysis revealed the precipitate to be of amorphous nature due to the silica present. The analysis confirmed that the precipitate was mainly FeSO3.3H2O. The paper also discusses the potential impact of the slag on the environment.
