"The paper presents the approach taken by Craigmont Mines to grinding circuit control. A detailed description is given of a fully automatic control system which bases its control actions on the continuous measurement of particle size in the cyclone overflow stream. The control system holds a specified particle size in the cyclone overflow, and grinds rod mi 11 ore feed at increased rates. The principles of operation of the system used for continuous measurement of particle size are described, end the improvements in mill throughput and copper recovery over several months of continuous operation are presented.INTRODUCTION Craigmont Mines Limited is located in the south-western interior region of the province of British Columbia, approximately 230 road miles north-east of Vancouver, and ten miles west of the town of Merritt. A moderate climate, good roads and service facilities provided by the Canadian Pacific Railway, Inland Natural Gas Company, and the B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, have provided a very favorable mine and plant site.The preliminary metallurgical design of the Craigmont mill was based on the test results of samples obtained from the original 2500' level drift during 1959. Pilot plant runs and other research testing for design pur¬poses were conducted at the Canadian Exploration Ltd. Laboratory, at Salmo, B.C. The design flowsheet was altered in progressive stages from 2,000 to 3,000, and finally 4,000 tons per day as the ore reserves became better defined. Construction work on the 2,400' level mill site commenced in late 1960. The official opening of Craigntnt Mines Limited took place on September 15, 1961, a little over two years from the time of the metallurgical assessment of the original ore samples.Mill throughput to date has varied widely both on a daily and a monthly basis, due to the varying hardness of the mine ores. The grindability af the ore appears to be related to the oxide iron content, which varies from lows of 9% to highs of 20%. Daily tonnage has ranged from 5,000 tons per day with 10% iron in the feed, to 6,000 tons per day with 20% iron feeds."

Recently, there is growing trend to build the high-rise and install curtain walls. Following this trend, we developed robot for building wall cleaning work, which moves along Built-in guide rail of building. Because it moves attached at building wall for cleaning work, it can be seriously affected by potential threats, like earthquake, strong wind, malfunction, and construction error of built-in guide rail. In order to cope with those threats actively, this paper presents the Fail-Safety system. The building wall cleaning robot consists of two moving system: The Horizontal Moving System which mainly do maintenance work, and The Vertical Climbing System which transport the horizontal moving system floor by floor. We apply the Fail-Safety system to these systems. The Fail-Safety system consists of sensors to detect external situation, and, with information of sensors, give instruction for what to do. This robot system is installed with four kinds of sensors: shock sensor, infrared ray sensor, laser sensor, magnetic sensor. First, shock sensor detects external shock during cleaning work. When shock sensor detects big shock, the robot returns to starting point to inspect how damaged it is. Second, infrared ray sensor detects damage of built-in guide rail. It is to prevent destruction of robot caused by moving along damaged rail. Third, laser sensor gives notice about where obstacle is. It is for robot to avoid crash with obstacle and decrease damage. Fourth, magnetic sensor detects magnetic points, which are installed in rail at regular intervals, and helps robot to find its position, based on location of magnetic points detected. If robot is damaged by external shock and its encoder, which gives information of location to it, is not working, magnetic sensor will give information of robot?s location to robot. And then, robot regulates its velocity depending on position of it, and safely returns to starting point. The Fail-Safety system in this paper is for building wall cleaning robot to sense external threats, and prevent getting worse. Applied to this active protection system, making safe environment of maintenance work is possible for robot system.

Introduction The Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is on the Alberta side of the Crowsnest pass, twelve miles from the Alberta British Columbia boundary-line. Here, five coal seams of Lower Cretaceous age are found in the Kootenay formation. They outcrop on the north and south slopes of the valley, with strike approximately N.30°W., paralleling the main range of the Rocky mountains, and dip about 40 deg. westward. Of the five seams, only two, designated No. 1 and No. 2, have been worked to date. On the West Canadian Collieries property, No. 1 seam ranges in thickness from thirty feet to nil. Generally, it has a hard, strong conglomerate roof. No. 2 seam is separated from No. 1 by forty-five feet of shales and sandstones. It has a thickness of eight to thirty feet.

This paper relates cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) risk management theory to actual coal enterprises in China. The 3 phases of M&A are preparation, implementation and integration. By using the Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy evaluation methods, we will try to establish a model to assess risks of the cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises. We then apply this model to the case of Yankuang Group acquisition of the Felix Company and receive the assessment results. There are significant reasons for quantitative research on risks of cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises, such as effective prevention and risk-aversion, and facilitation of cross-border M&As.

This can only be achieved by utilizing three of Cassiar's most important resources; i.e., people, time and money. "This paper will initially outline the specific types of copper castings used in blast furnace iron production. Tuyeres, tuyere coolers and stack cooling plates will be discussed in some depth, with particular reference to their dimensional configuration and purpose.Following this, the failure of such cooling members will be discussed, with special focus on tuyeres. Tuyeres are the most common casting which often requires replacement. Reasons for failure and its effect on operations will also be included.The latter sections of the paper will deal with the strict specifications demanded by ironmakers regarding copper castings. The justification for such rigid demands will be explained through the material presented earlier in the paper.IntroductionThe modern 5000-tpd blast furnace, worth millions, is a large capital investment to be sitting idle. Consequently, ironmakers strive to minimize the loss in iron production and revenue from furnace downtime. Two major causes of downtime are furnace relines and shutdowns to replace damaged tuyeresor tuyere coolers. Copper ancillaries are important items in the production of iron. They are consumable items, therefore they contribute to the campaign life or to the downtime in blast furnace production.Several combinations of lining and cooling systems have been used with varying degrees of success. Blast furnace refractories have evolved from ceramic to carbonaceous linings. The Russians and Japanese have successfully introduced stave-cooled furnaces that may have several forms, such as evaporative cooling. Stelco has two furnaces which use the Russian-designed cast iron system. However, this paper will be confined to the use of copper cast cooling members in a conventional internally cooled furnace.Figure 1 is a schematic cross section of the E blast furnace. The three major sections of a blast furnace-the stack, bosh and hearth-are identified. Further, the locations of the various copper members are indicated. This furnace produces an average of 5300 tons of hot metal per day."

"Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours ' retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surface disposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. This increasing demand requires not only largescale mining and processing of conventional and complex uranium ores, but also leads to the consideration of new and nonconventional sources of uranium, e.g., black shales, phosphate rocks, granite, sea water and fossil-fuel ash."

"At Vale's Thompson Nickel Refinery, the copper and arsenic in the nickel electrolyte are removed by precipitation using H2S, generating a sulphide precipitate containing about 40% Cu, 8% Ni, 2 to 4% As and 30% S. This residue has been typically stored in impoundment ponds within the plant site. Various options for reprocessing it have been investigated over the years. One of the options involved oxidative pressure acid leach, whereby over 95% Cu, Ni and As were extracted. More recently, an atmospheric alkaline sulphide leaching process for selective removal of 70 to 90% As was developed and mini-plant tested. After alkaline sulphide leaching, the dissolved arsenic is precipitated as stable basic ferric arsenate (BFA) with the addition of ferric sulfate, while the low-arsenic Cu/Ni sulfide is suitable for processing in Vale's operations elsewhere in Canada.INTRODUCTIONVale’s Thompson Nickel Refinery was commissioned in 1961 and currently it has the capacity to produce about 56,700 tonnes per year of electrolytic nickel as cathode slab and rounds products. A sulphate and chloride mixed electrolyte is used in the Thompson refining process and it typically contains 75 to 85 g/L Ni, 50 to 60 g/L Cl, 90 to 120 g/L SO4 2-, 25 to 30 g/L Na and 8 to 9 g/L boric acid. The main impurities in the Thompson anolyte are copper, cobalt, arsenic, iron and lead.The simplified Thompson electrolyte purification flowsheet is shown in Figure 1 (Oliver & Wrana, 2009, Goble & Chapman, 1986); it consists of precipitation of copper, arsenic and lead with H2S, followed by nickel replenishment with ground matte and acid and removal of cobalt and iron with Cl2 and NiCO3."

"7.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter addresses the joint venture and examines a number of general concepts of the joint venture relationship. Chapter 8 looks at some specific concepts related to the provisions of a joint venture agreement, which are equally applicable to a shareholders’ agreement or other contractual relationship. The term “joint venture” is used because the author is a common law solicitor (a matter of convenience for which apologies are offered to civil law readers), but it should be noted that, in many aspects, the legal structure of an entity is irrelevant. It is the relationship of the parties, be they venturers or shareholders, that is important, and the areas of concern are surprisingly similar (except for terminology).The details of the joint venture relationship and agreement could fill several books. Accordingly, this chapter and the next focus on selected topics that appear to have caused problems or confusion or to be the basis for disputes. If the owner wanted to move on, he could sell his property outright and use his stake to look elsewhere.As logging and mining camps were opened, the development of better roads and railways made access easier. Entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to make money by assembling large parcels of land and working them as a single operation. In order to do this, some owners who were not ready to sell out had to be convinced to do so through more attractive offers"

"AbstractThe Cardium formation of northeastern British •Columbia •contains an erosional unconformity that becomes progressively more severe northward until, •at Liard river, the stratigraphic hiatus eliminates the underlying Lower •Cardium sandstone, the Kaskapau formation, and the upper Dunvegan sandstones. The area of unconformity roughly coincides with the distribution of the continental facies of the earlier Dunvegan formation. Along Wapiti river, the zone fossil Scaphites ventricosus Meek and Hayden is found in the Bad-heart member of the overlying Wapiabi shale; Scaphites :preventricosus. Cobban marks the base of the Wapiabi shale; Scaphites cf. corvensis •Cobban is found in the middle shale member of the •Cardium formation. The log of the Red-Willow No. 1 well shows close similarity to the outcrop sections south of Wapiti river. The Cardium formation is mainly late Turonian in age. Two other pre-Cardium Turonian sands of north-eastern British Columbia are named the Wartenbe and Tuskoola sands.IntroductionTHE Upper Cretaceous Cardium (Bighorn) sandstone formation of the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia carries within its formational limits an erosional unconformity. The unconformity decreases to the southeast, becoming in immediate shoreline regions, now under the plains, a minor diastem. Such diastems, or stratigraphic intervals of non-deposition, occurring in the shallow unda-zone are paralleled in the deeper portions of the unda-zone by the phenomena of sub-aqueous winnowing. '.This winnowing and re-working •at critical depths creates sand areas with porosity."

Reducing SAG Mill feed size has been a major trend in recent years. ?Mine to mill? strategies have reduced blasted-rock size, and in a growing number of operations reducing the primary crusher CSS and/or adding additional crushing upstream of the SAG mill have reduced rock feed size. While reducing feed size will increase SAG mill throughput, issues arise in terms of retaining charge in the mill, exposing the shell lining to impact damage, and maintaining milling performance should the pre-crush system shut down. This paper reviews the past experience on pre-crushing for SAG mills and provides an analysis of liner design (in particular grates and shell liners) for pre-crushed feed.

DELN ITE Mines Limited is located in Deloro township, on the west end of the south break of the Porcupine Camp. Mining operations are currently being carried out on the downward extension of a system of quartz veins in an andesite zone. This zone has been followed from surface to the present bottom level of 5,250 feet. The changing mineralogy of the vein system has involved an increase in tourmaline content from the surface downwards, so that the veins at the lower levels are composed of dark brown quartz-tourmaline. The drilling problem presented by these extremely hard veins was partially alleviated by the development and adoption of a one-inch drill bit. All blast-hole drilling is now done with the one-inch bit, without any difference in hole spacing.

"As part of the Namew Lake project a mill was constructed to treat 1900 tpd of ore grading approximately 0.90% CU and 2.45% Ni to produce copper and nickel concentrates.Nickel occurs mainly as pentlandite and violarite while copper occurs as chalcopyrite. Two main ore types are present1 lower grade disseminated sulphides in a talcose ultramafic gangue and a higher grade solid sulfide with a granitic breccia matrix.Primary crushed ore from underground is treated on surface in a conventional closed circuit crushing plant using 2-stage cone crushing. Crushed ore is conveyed to storage and then fed at a controlled rate to a grinding circuit employing a rod and ball mill with hydrocyclone classification. Rougher flotation separates and cleans nickel and copper sulfides from waste materials followed by a high lime separation circuit to separate the minerals into final concentrates. Dewatering is achieved through use of high capacity thickeners and pressure filters prior to delivery to a loadout area. The crushing and milling control is highly automated.Plant design was based on metallurgical samples obtained from drill cores. After the first year of operations, plant results compared favourably with design projections.INTRODUCTIONThe Namew Lake Project is a joint venture partnership between Outokumpu Mines Ltd. (Canada) and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (60%). The project included construction of a mine and milling complex to treat approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of copper-nickel ore grading o.91% and 2.44% Ni. Known reserves are estimated at 2. 65 million tonnes. The deposit is located approximately 65 km south of Flin Flon (120 km by road) and about 5 km east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. The decision to construct a concentrating facility was made June 15, 1987 and construction started a week later. The facility, designed for 1900 tonne per day throughput, was ready for commissioning in September 1988. Outokumpu Engineering of Finland was chosen to prepare metallurgical flowsheets, select and develop plant layouts, and provide construction management. Kilborn (Toronto) contributed detailed engineering for civil, structural, mechanical and electrical components and outokumpu Equipment of Canada, the design, the supply, and commissioning of the instrumentation package. Hudson Bay undertook the initial metallurgical test work and preliminary design work."

"In 1994 McGill and INCO (Sudbury operation) initiated transfer of technology originally developed to detect level in flotation columns to thickeners. A conductivity probe was installed in a concentrate thickener to monitor the mud-line and solids load. The probe consisted in a vertical tube with 32 equally-spaced electrode rings connected in pairs to give 31 conductivity cells. Conductivity was measured as a function of depth (so-called conductivity profile) from which the mud line and % solids could be inferred. The probe was installed in October 1994 and has been successfully detecting profiles since then. This communication includes a description of incidents and experiences during this technology transfer process including: probe installation and start-up; software modifications to accommodate operating conditions and operators' needs; calibration procedures to adjust to changes in performance as a consequence of long term use; and preliminary observations on the last stage, still in progress, signal interpretation and use to facilitate operation, particularly by providing early reaction to upstream disturbances.IntroductionThickening is one of the basic unit operations in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy used to separate suspended solid particles from a solid-liquid dispersion by gravity settling. As the dispersion enters the thickener, the solids settle and clarified water overflows the top. A thickener, which may be continuous or batch, is basically a large vertical cylindrical tank provided with devices to feed the dispersion and to remove the settled solids. The tank provides residence time for the particles to settle. The dispersion enters the thickener through the feedwell whose function is to dissipate the momentum of the feed stream and to create relatively quiescent conditions around the entering point. Rotating rake arms move the settled solids towards the discharge point located at the bottom centre of the tank.There are normally three distinct zones in a thickener: a top layer of clear water, a middle layer called a sedimenting zone in which particles are settling, and a bottom layer called a compression zone in which particles are pressed together as a consequence of the weight of accumulated particles. Proper operation of a thickener requires two simultaneous conditions: no solids in the water overflowing the top and the target solids content in the underflow pulp. To achieve these conditions is difficult because sensors for detecting the sediment line (interface between clear water and sedimenting zone) and the solids content in the compression zone are not commercially available."

The introduction of the National Instrument (?NI?) 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects has led to some very specific requirements to reporting a Mineral Resource estimate for mineral projects to the public. There are elements of the Mineral Resource estimate that are based on the qualified person (?QP?) completing the work to accepted industry practices and applying their relevant experience. There is no document that defines what is considered the accepted industry practices. There are guidelines provided by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (?CIM?) but, in general, the industry practices are dynamic and often different QPs will estimate the same mineral project in different ways. This sometime happens on exploration projects as they proceed from one study to the next. The focus of this paper is to provide a review of some of the current practices that are published in Technical Reports (Preliminary Assessment to Feasibility studies) with respect to classifying a Mineral Resource as Inferred, Indicated and Measured and the grade interpolation and modeling methods, data support (i.e. geological drill hole spacing) and validation methods employed.

"Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticle suspensions were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. Experiments involving both clean model mineral suspensions and complex ultramafic nickel ores confirmed that conventional water-soluble molecular flotation collectors such as xanthate could be partially or completely replaced by hydrophobic nanoparticle flotation collectors. The ability of nanoparticles to induce flotation was demonstrated by floating hydrophilic, negatively charged glass beads with cationic polystyrene nanoparticle collectors. Electrostatic attraction promoted the spontaneous deposition of the nanoparticles on the glass surfaces raising the effective contact angle sufficiently high to promote the adhesion of beads to air bubbles. As little as 10% coverage of the bead surfaces with our most effective nanoparticles could promote high flotation efficiencies, whereas conventional small molecular flotation collector requires ~ 20% or higher coverage for a good recovery. Surface functionalized nanoparticles enhanced the ability for nanoparticle collectors to selectively deposit onto surfaces of the desired mineral particles in the presence of gangue. For example, poly (styrene-co-vinylimidazole) nanoparticles were designed to selectively deposit onto nickel mineral (pentlandite) in the presence of Mg/Si slime. Flotation tests of ultramafic nickel ores at Vale with these nanoparticle collectors have shown improvements in both pentlandite recovery and selectivity. On-going work includes attempts to identify specific applications where nanoparticle flotation collectors might be cost effective.INTRODUCTION Most mineral processing operations include multiple stages of froth flotation to concentrate and isolate the desired product. Before flotation, chemical collectors are routinely added to ground ore slurries, selectively binding to mineral-rich particles, increasing their hydrophobicity thus promoting selective flotation. (Fuerstenau, Jameson, & Yoon, 2007) Conventional collectors are surfactants with a short hydrocarbon tail and a head group, such as xanthate. A typical conventional collector is potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), which is a small molecule with an extended molecular length of about 1 nm. Critical characteristics of a good collector include the ability to selectively adsorb onto desired mineral surfaces and to lower the water/mineral surface energy. Despite the extensive role of flotation in mineral processing, some ores are difficult to process by flotation. For example, ultramafic nickel sulfide ore containing both valuable pentlandite and large quantities of unwanted Mg/Si slime [primarily serpentine, (MgFe)3Si2O5(OH)4] responds poorly to flotation. (Mani, Xu, Quinn, & Stratton-Crawley, 1997) Fibrous hydrophilic Mg/Si slime usually masks the surface of pentlandite (known as “slime coating”) due to electrostatic interaction (Edwards, Kipkie, & Agar, 1980) and dramatically depresses pentlandite flotation. Consequently, new approaches are required for processing these difficult ores."

"The majority of Ontario's limestone and dolostone production comes from a few Paleozoic carbonate units. In eastern and central Ontario, Ordovician rock units, which are the main sources for production, include the Oxford, Gull River, Bobcaygeon, Verulam, and Lindsay Formations. They are predominantly utilized for aggregate and cement manufacturing, with the Bobcaygeon Formation being used as a source of building stone. Along the Niagara Escarpment, the Silurian Lockport, Amabel, and Guelph Formations are sources for the limestone industry. The largest tonnage of rock extracted by the industry comes from these Silurian units, especially the Lockport and Amabel Formations. These units are used primarily for aggregate, although they are also a source for lime. In southwestern Ontario, the Silurian Bertie Formation and Devonian strata, represented by the Bois Blanc Formation, Onondaga Formation, Detroit River Group, and Dundee Formation, contribute to Ontario's production of lime, cement production and crushed stone. The Detroit River Group (Lucas and Amherstburg Formations) is the main source of the lime and cement produced in the province.Northern areas, which may become significant sources for the industry, include Manitoulin Island, the Lake Timiskaming area, and the James Bay Lowland. IntroductionThe Engineering and Terrain Geology Section of the Ontario Geological Survey has undertaken a geological inventory of all active and abandoned limestone and dolostone quarries in Ontario. This geological study, combined with a commercial study of active quarries carried out by the consulting firm of Derry, Michener, Booth and Wahl, will provide an up-to-date report on the industry in the province and will be published by the Aggregate Resources Section of the Ministry of Natural Resources. This report will follow the format and style of D.F. Hewitt's Ontario Department of Mines Industrial Mineral Reports and Circulars (Hewitt, 1960, I964a, 1964b, 1964c; Hewitt and Vos, 1972). Examinations of the quarries were carried out by geologists in the Paleozoic I Mesozoic Geology Subsection of the Engineering and Terrain Geology Section, and include, in addition to the authors, R,R. Wolf, V.A . Mazur, and D.K. Armstrong in the summer of 1986."

Controlled thermolysis of gold(I) complex, [Au(C13H27COO)(PPh3)], at 180 °C for 5 h under an N2 atmosphere affords the new type of monodispersed spherical gold nanoparticles capped by myristate and a small amount of PPh3 ligands (average diameter 23±1.5 nm), in spite of no use of solvent, reducing agent and stabilizer. Much attention has been paid to the preparation and structure determination of transition metal nanoparticles, because of their widespread use in technological applications.1 In general, the chemical reduction of metal salts and organometallic complexes2 by the use of reducing agent is carried out to prepare gold nanoparticles. In some cases, a large amount of solvent and stabilizers such as surfactants,3 polymers4 and ligands5 are used to prevent agglomeration of particles and control the particle size. For instance, Brust et al. reported a two-phase reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the presence of dodecanethiol as stabilizer to prepare gold nanoparticles.6 On the other hand, O?Brien et al. recently reported an one-phase preparation of gold nanoparticles by the reduction of AuCl4 - by NaBH4 in the mixture of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and octadecylamine which act as both solvent and stabilizer, but this procedure also needs reducing agent.7

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. L’Échancrure de Cobalt est un large domaine de roches sédimentaires clastiques d’âge Paléoprotérozoïque qui reposent en discordance sur la ceinture de roches vertes d’Abitibi d’âge Archéen. La Diabase de Nipissing, mise en place vers 2219 Ma et qui constitue un réseau de sills et de dykes d’importance régionale, est présente dans l’ensemble de l’échancrure et constitue la roche-hôte principale des systèmes de veines aurifères-polymétalliques de la propriété Merico-Ethel, près de la bordure nord-est de l’Échancrure de Cobalt. Ces veines à minéralisation aurifère et polymétallique constituent un système de veines de calcite-quartz sécantes d’orientation principalement est-ouest et à pendage fort qui se sont formées peu de temps après la cristallisation de la Diabase de Nipissing (à ~15 Ma près, d’après les âges Pb-Pb). La minéralogie de la minéralisation est complexe; elle consiste typiquement en sulfures, en arséniures, en métaux natifs (or et argent) et en hématite spéculaire, préférentiellement concentrés à l’interface entre les silicates et la gangue de calcite. "The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanochemical activation by planetary milling as method to enhance the recovery of cerium from rare earth ores. For this purpose, a weathered ore was first ground by planetary milling and then leached by sulfuric acid. The influence of planetary milling was investigated by assisting the experiments with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) in cerium LIII-edge and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry to measure the concentration of cerium dissolved by leaching. Results showed that, by increasing the grinding time, although the particle size of the specimen increased due to agglomeration, the recovery of cerium significantly increased. This finding clearly indicated that a smaller particle size actually hinders the recovery of cerium. In particular, XAFS analysis revealed that the longer the grinding time, the more tetravalent cerium could be converted into trivalent cerium and such conversion, also called mechanochemical reaction was beneficial to the recovery of cerium. Based on the obtained results, it was confirmed that approximately 70% of cerium could be recovered by mechanochemically activated leaching of rare earth ores.INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements comprising lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Since REEs have various unique physical and/or chemical properties, they have become essential materials for advanced application (Adachi, 2015). REEs used in industry are usually supplied as rare earth minerals. In the last decades, flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation and leaching have been widely applied to recovery of REEs from rare earth minerals like monazite (Archana, Rekha, Manis, Jitendra, & Jin, 2015). Among these operations, leaching has been widely studied in the recent years to improve the state of the art (Archana, Rekha, Manis, Jitendra, & Jin, 2015; Xiao, Feng, Huang, Huang, Chen, Liu, Wang, & Long, 2016; Farzaneh, Fereshteh, & Ahmad, 2017). Aiming to enhance recovery of REEs from rare earth minerals, a possible advancement of leaching technology could be the mechanochemically activation of the ore by high-intensity milling (Alorro, 2016). In the mechanochemical activation, an improvement of the leaching performances can be achieved through high-intensity milling operations which result into a dramatic decrease of the mineral particle size with a consequent improvement of the physical kinetics of leaching. Furthermore, the high mechanical energy provided to the sample during milling can determine the rupture of the crystal structure of the mineral, thereby transforming it into a more leachable form."
