Shipping and stevedoring industry is going to witness a massive increase in the amount of containers to be handled while land constraints become more critical. Offshore transfer operations hence offer a preferable solution to deal with the surge in cargos rather than to expand the port outwards. Recently, there has been increasing research interests on offshore crane automation. Suspended cargos in a ship-mounted crane system are caused to swing due to the vibratory motion of the ship induced by ocean waves, which can lead to collision between cargos and deck. Therefore, it is vital for offshore crane systems to satisfy rigorous requirements in terms of safety and efficiency. This paper presents the modelling and control development for offshore boom crane systems. A second-order sliding mode control law is proposed for trajectory tracking and sway suppression control, making use of its capability of actuator chattering alleviation while achieving high tracking performance and preserving strong robustness. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov sense. Simulation results indicate that the proposed controller can significantly reduce the effect of disturbances coming from gusty waves and other dynamic loadings.

For many years, copper cathode quality has been a priority for end consumers, since it affects the variety of products that can be obtained from them. From the beginning, physical and chemical quality of the wire bars was controlled, as this product was used to obtain wire rod and other forms of copper by wire drawing. At that time, all the electro refined cathodes were melted and casted as wire bars. Subsequently, in the 80’s, with the introduction of continuous casting furnaces, it was possible to directly produce wire rod from cathodes. From then on, cathodes quality standards were consistently increased, by the introduction of uniform criteria, among which we can identify ASTM and British Standards as well. Also, producers began to use more demanding internal standards than the existing specifications, in order to differentiate their cathodes as high quality products among customers. Today the physical aspect of cathodes, including nodules, cracks, sulfates, or others, is the first element used by end customers to assess their quality. This paper aims to show a brief vision of the evolution of quality specifications for products used to manufacture copper wire. INTRODUCTION From the beginning of refined copper production for industrial purposes, mandatory minimum quality conditions were established. These quality conditions were used as the main element to determine prices and discounts of the respective sales contracts. Reviewing the copper development history, we can appreciate that its quality requirements had been constantly evolved, so that currently refined copper has an extremely high quality standard, that allows its direct use in the production of ultra-thin cables and other products applied in the industry. In each stage, refined copper production has fostered the development of technology used in their treatment. Similarly, cathode processing technology has been evolving to minimize treatment costs in order to generate a wire rod for several uses, ranging from power cables to super conductors. In this sense, to the already known type of fusion processes of the Southwire or Asarco type (capacities over 80 kt / year), wire rod production processes of the Upcast or Rautomead type (capacities between 20-50k t / year) have been added. They immediately deliver oxygen-free wire rods. In both cases, we can conclude that the clients' requirement had evolved from a chemical criteria focus, to considering more subjective aspects, such as visual control as the first stage of inspection.

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. "The flotation performances and adsorption mechanisms of a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) to malachite, cassiterite and wolframite were investigated by micro-flotation tests and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The micro-flotation results indicated that compared with styrene phosphonic acid (SPA), diphosphonic acid (DPA), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), HPA exhibited excellent collecting power to the three oxide ores. In addition, HPA showed superior selectivity against hematite, tourmaline, feldspar and quartz. The results of XPS analysis demonstrated that HPA reacts with active species (M) on metal oxide by formation of P-O-M or P-M bonds.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, flotation has been the main process for separation and recovery of valuable minerals from complex ores (Mei, 2013; Zhou, 2014). One of the key requirements in flotation process is to increase selectively the surface hydrophobicity of the targeted minerals by surfactant (known as collector in flotation) adsorption so that these mineral particles can preferably attach air bubbles in a slurry or pulp (Bai, 2004; Hankins, 2004). To anchor a solid surface selectively, special functional group are designed to adjust the interaction between the surfactant and the active sites of solid surfaces (Wu, 2006; Huang, 2014).Organic phosphorous compounds have strong affinity toward metals or metal oxides because they form more stable metal complexes than metal carboxylates (Pazik, 2001; Zheng, 1998). In mineral engineering, phosphorous compounds have been exploited as metal extractants and flotation collectors (Alguacil, 2002; Sun, 2008). Ni (2012) and Zhang (1998) introduced diphosphonic acid (DPA) as an effective collector for flotation of fersmite and niobite. Liu (1999) found styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) was a superior collector for flotation recovery of finely disseminated rutile ores. Gruner and Bilsing (1992) thought SPA was one of the best collectors for flotation recovery of cassiterite which could obtain a high-grade concentrates of more than 40% with high recovery values. Bulatovic (1999) investigated the flotation performances of phosphoric acid ester (PAE) to perovskite, ilmenite and rutile and found that PAE was an impactful collector for selective flotation of titanium minerals from complex ores in the presence of petroleum sulfate. However, a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) as a flotation collector for recovery of titanium ores were hardly reported in the previous literatures."

Arsenic is a metalloid which has attracted great environmental scrutiny in recent decades. Moreover, its control and deportment is becoming increasingly important in the metallurgical processing of modern complex ores and concentrates. As such the authors of this publication have a combined professional experience of well over 100 years in the study and hydrometallurgical treatment of arsenic. Hence, this paper will cover arsenic fundamentals along with a review of technology for removal, fixation and stabilization. Finally, an application of industrial Alkaline Sulfide Leaching (ASL) of a copper enargite concentrate will be elucidated.

The Eco Ridge deposit is located in the Elliot Lake mining camp in Northern Ontario, Canada. Between 1955 and 1996, the area produced more than 138,000 t (300 million pounds) of U3O8 and very significant amounts of thorium and heavy rare earths. Based on the NI 43-101 Preliminary Economic Assessment by Roscoe Postle Associates (RPA) dated June 2012, and the economic review by RPA as announced in Pele Mountains’ Press release dated September 12, 2013, the Eco Ridge Mine Project would extract and process 46 Mt of material to produce about 19,000 t (42 million pounds) of U3O8 and about 65,000 t of rare earth oxide (REO) over a 14-year life. This paper discusses process optimization studies including beneficiation and hydrometallurgical testwork. The proposed modified flowsheet includes the flotation and processing of 1) a pyrite concentrate, 2) a dominantly light rare earth elements (LREE) concentrate, 3) a concentrate containing most of the balance of the uranium and heavy rare earths (HREE), and 4) a relatively inert tailings.

The system of mining statistics for Canada, as it exists today, represents the result of long years of progress, first by the Geological Survey, later and more comprehensively by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines, and now by the Mining Branch of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics-all supplemented by the very comprehensive reports published by the several provincial departments of mines. It is the purpose of this paper briefly to state the development and present status of Canada's statistical service, more particularly in regard to information on mineral production, and to show that in its evolution continuous progress has been made in the elimination of factors tending to duplication and overlaping, with the result that the construction of an adequate statistical service has been carried out with the least possible expenditure of .public funds. For the purpose of this discussion, the subject of mineral statistics may conveniently be considered from two points of view. The technical difficulties in obtaining satisfactory and complete data from the variety of industries represented in the mining fields of Canada must be apparent to all. Methods of record-keeping are almost as numerous as mines and even the larger concerns which maintain elaborate records for their own information, often find it difficult to compile the statistical reports required of them, because the specific form of inquiry differs from the method in use in their offices.

Afin de mieux valoriser ce type d'inforrnat ion, nous avons été arnenés à expérimenter et à mettre en oeuvre des techniques multivariables adaptées au traltement d'une information semi-quantitative en utilisant le principe d'un codage logique préalable. La structuration des résultats de la Gaspésie a conduit à l'élaboration de cartes de synthèse qui constituent un support nécessaire à l'interprétatlon des répartitions plus ponctuelles des minéraux "utiles" sur le plan de la recherche minière.

"Factors affecting the extraction of gold are of a mineralogical nature. Knowledge of the mineralogy of the ore or metallurgical product to be treated, if appropriately combined with the metallurgical test work, may improve gold recoveries. .This paper outlines the mineralogical techniques f or the study of gold ores and metallurgical products and describes the gold mineralogy in relation to its metallurgy. An effective plan for studying refractory and other difficult ores, combining metallurgical test work, chemical analysis and mineralogy and capable of giving positive results over relatively short periods of time, is suggested.IntroductionFactors affecting gold recoveries are of a mineralogical nature and include (i) the gold-bearing minerals, (ii) their grain size and, particularly where the grain size is very fine (10 microns in diameter and less), (iii) their host minerals and (iv) the association these form with the gold-bearing minerals.Mineralogical studies of gold ores and metallurgical products containing gold in economic amounts (today down to 1/10 of one ounce per tonne or 2.84 ppm) are difficult and time consuming. Mostly because of such reason, metallurgical testing (test work) is usually done simply by trial and error without understanding the causes for failure or success.Mineralogical studies, if appropriately conducted and combined with the test work, provide an efficient mean s of improving recoveries through the understanding of gold losses derived from the use of the wrong technique for separation. The information they provide is therefore the first step in the development of recovery techniques, for those ores where the test work alone failed to produce positive results."

"The construction of large. high-power electric furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology . New developments in the design and operation of electric furnaces have been spurred by the escalating cost of electric power and increasingly stringent environmental constraints. Key areasofprogress include the application of high voltage to enhance furnace productivity; the installation of novel furnace cooling elements and robust binding systems to extend furnace life; development of process schemes to reduce power consumption by preheating and prereduction of the charge; and environmental control improvements for handling fine dusty feedstocks, and for furnace sealing.This paper reviews these developments and outlines a systematic approach for their application in the custom design of new or retrofit electric furnace facilities.IntroductionThe use of electric smelting furnaces has continued to progress during the last decade. Electric furnaces offer high throughput capacity and productivity. "The Direct Chill (DC) casting process uses water to extract heat from molten aluminium and helps to control the solidification process. Many factors such as the water flowrate, water distribution around the mould and water impingement angle have significant impacts on the solidification process. It has been noted that the chemistry variation of the cooling water is also an important factor that has a major impact on the presence of defects on the ingot. A significant change in the water quality can produce defects on the ingots such as cracks, bleedouts, or runouts. Understanding the impact of water quality variation on ingots is therefore essential to ensure good ingot production and reduce defects. This paper aims at describing a new approach to follow the variations of process water quality over time. It is an original and innovative method, which is still under progress. A water quality and stability index (WQSI) is under development to evaluate changes in the water composition based on water physico-chemical parameters. The index is calculated by comparing each of the actual parameters with historical values previously modeled by a statistical law. It is a dimensionless number having an adjustable weight factor for each parameter. The positive or negative contribution of each parameter, with respect to the water cooling capacity, is taken into account to calculate the WQSI. The current selection of parameters is based on knowledge from the literature as well as on empirical experience. When the developed tool will be mature, it could be used to track water variations upon time and anticipate problems, enabling proactive actions to ensure good ingot production.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, the impact of water chemistry on heat transfer, during DC casting, has been of great interest in the aluminum industry. Several papers have been published to demonstrate the correlation between water chemistry and heat transfer (Yu, 1985), (Gildemeister, 2014). Although numerous studies do present the effects of water parameters (i. e. hardness, conductivity, oil, and grease…) on cooling capacity under controlled experimental conditions, they do not reflect the strong interactions between the parameters and variations present in a casting center. Wells and Cockcroft also demonstrated that laboratory based studies are not fully representative of real heat transfer in an industrial casthouse, there are too many factors involved (Wells, Li, & Cockcroft, 2001). In this context, it becomes very difficult to obtain a quantifiable relationship between the capacity of water to cool the ingot and ultimately the performance of the cast."

"The North Star and Don Jon copper deposits lie beneath the waters of Thompson Lake, which is 12 miles east of Flin Flon, Manitoba. The deposits were discovered during the years 1949 and 1951 by diamond drilling done in the vicinity of pyritic showings on the shores of two small islands in the lake. The Don Jon ore body lies 1, 700 feet southeast of the North Star orebody and is connected with the North Star mine workings by a crosscut on the 600-foot level (Figure 1 ).Production began on January 1, 1955, at a combined rate of 200 tons per day. The ore is trucked, on 24 miles of highway, to the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited mill at Flin Flon.Regional GeologyRocks in the Thompson Lake area are Precambrian volcanics, ranging in composition from andesite to rhyolite, with related tuffs and breccia. These rocks have a general north-south trend and are steeply dipping. The area is part of the Lac Aimee fault block, which probably is the southward extension of a south-plunging syncline now thrust some miles to the north. This regional deformation has produced many subsidiary zones of intense shearing and crumpling. It is in two of these zones of shearing and drag-folding that the orebodies occur. The only recognizable intrusive is a narrow diorite sill which trends northeasterly near the west shore of Thompson Lake.The North Star MineA pyritic showing, carrying some chalcopyrite, was discovered around the year 1930 on the west side of a small island near the west shore of Thompson Lake. This ground was included in a group of claims acquired by the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co., Limited in 1947.In the years 1949 to 1951, a diamond drilling program outlined a copper sulphide orebody. This ore zone comes to surface beneath the lake, about 300 feet north of the pyritic showing on the island."

The basic studies on the surface properties and flotation characteristics of ilmenite were made by electrophoretic, adsorption, contact-angle and floatability measurements. The isoelectric point of ilmenite is found to be at pH 5.6. By combining the results of electrokinetic studies and adsorption measurements, a clearer picture of the ilmenite-solution interface was observed. These findings were correlated with the floatability of ilmenite obtained by Hallimond tube tests. The general flotation characteristics of ilmenite are compared with those obtained for magnetite and rutile. It is indicated that the above three minerals, namely, ilmenite, magnetite and rutile, have very similar surface properties and flotation characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to make an effective separation of these minerals by flotation. However, it is found that sodium orthophosphate acts as a selective depressant for magnetite in anionic flotation. Therefore, close pH control of the pulp in the presence of the phosphate ion enhances the possibility for a successful separation of these minerals.

With the ongoing development of copper smelting technology, the improvement of environmental emission control and achieving an automated continuous copper pyrometallurgical process have become the key development goals for copper smelting. The double bottom blowing continuous copper smelting process combine bottom blowing smelting (SKS) and bottom blowing converting (BCC) process and fire refining as “three-connected furnaces” arrangement is a pyrometallurgical process independently developed by China’s ENFI which can continuously produce copper from raw material through to anodes. This technology can improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental emissions for the overall copper smelting and converting process. This paper discusses the engineering characteristics and production practice of the SDIC Jincheng Metallurgical Project, which operates SKS smelting and BCC converting process with “three-connected furnace” arrangement for the first time in the world. Advanced engineering concepts and tools were used to optimize the configuration during the project engineering stage. The operation shows that the process has good environmental performance, reduced energy consumption and high level of automation, which is a new choice for copper continuous smelting process. INTRODUCTION One of the most important developing trends for the overall copper smelting process is to develop a continuous operation. Continuous copper smelting can maximise energy efficiency in copper concentrate and make full use of the rich heat treatment system. Cold charge and a part of low-heat-generating materials, which are processing with additional equipment in traditional copper smelting process, can be processed with rich reaction heat in continuous copper smelting and converting process to achieve good economic benefits. Yuan and Wang (2017) noted that SKS+BCC copper smelting process can reduce the secondary SO2 emissions compared with discontinuous copper smelting process, which required transportation of melted matte by matte ladle and may cause secondary pollution. The continuous copper smelting process can also reduce the generation of intermediate cold materials.

The efficiency of water use is a top priority for the global minerals industry, especially in regions with limited freshwater supplies. In these areas, the freshwater shortage has prompted mining companies to search for alternatives to freshwater sources. Seawater has been proven to be a potential water source for mineral beneficiation and metal extraction processes. This study compares chalcocite leaching behavior with ferric chloride to that with cupric chloride. We carried out leaching tests with a highly pure chalcocite sample in jacketed reactors under fully controlled pH and solution potential. The effect of chloride concentration, oxidant concentration, and temperature on copper extraction was quantified in both cupric and ferric chloride systems. In the ferric chloride system, increasing ferric concentration showed a positive effect on the first stage of chalcocite leaching. In the second stage, increasing temperature markedly enhanced copper extraction. In the cupric chloride system, chloride concentration presented a considerable effect on both the first and second stages of leaching, while temperature had a remarkable effect only on the second stage. The findings of this study would be beneficial to mine operations aiming to replace fresh water with seawater for heap leaching of chalcocite. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing operations/plants are normally operated adjacent to mines which are often located in remote and arid area, such as northern Chile, southern Peru and Australia with limited access to fresh water (Liu, Moran, & Vink, 2011, 2013). Water scarcity in these areas has prompted mining companies to invest in sustainable technologies to reduce the water use and/or increase the water use efficiency. One of the current sustainable approaches in mineral processing operations is to replace fresh water with seawater. Seawater is now being increasingly used for mineral beneficiation and metal extraction processes (Hernández et al., 2015). Another application of seawater could be for heap leaching of copper secondary sulfides, mainly chalcocite. However, the high concentration of chloride ion in seawater may significantly affect leaching kinetics of copper sulfide concentrates and ores (Watling et al., 2014). Therefore, it is essential to develop a fundamental understanding of the leaching of chalcocite in chloride media.

Development of new SF6 alternative cover gas with low global warming potential is strongly desired for melting and casting of magnesium alloys. We have tried to apply several kinds of HFC and HFE gases with low potential from 30 to 950 as protection gases to AZ91D alloy melt in the temperature range of 650 to 800°C. As a result, protective film consisted of MgF2 and MgO is formed on the melt surface and ignition-proof effect is sufficiently obtained at all the temperature ranges even when flow rates of mixed gases containing CO2 as a carrier gas are almost the same as those using SF6 gas. Reduction of global warming potential exceeds 98% at 650°C and 89% at 800°C in comparison with a mixed gas of CO2 and SF6.

Equipment and processes must be designed, operated and maintained as required to assure safe and efficient mineral processing.INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry must contend with many challenges to attain and maintain a competitive position in today's global market. Canadian Mineral Processors play a vital role in meeting the challenges and achieving optimum mineral productivity.Ongoing technology developments and improvements continue to be imperative to maintain a viable mineral processing industry. The efficient implementation of technology developments requires a safety conscious, skillful and productive work force.In addition to technical and human resources, challenges may also include governments, labour unions or environmental advocates who at times may appear to be misguided or unrealistic. Canadian Mineral Processors must not allow themselves to be overwhelmed by these apparent obstacles but must use their demonstrated ingenuity to achieve successful solutions.It should be recognized that the majority of the Canadian work force are, in fact, a potentially talented and skillful people with ambitions to excel. "Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine’s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine’s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations.INTRODUCTIONHaile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that has delineated over 62 tonnes (+2M ozs.) of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2 ppm (0.06 opt). This paper provides a brief history of the property, a summary of metallurgical testing, description of the process flowsheet and discusses design considerations.HISTORY1827 – 1837Gold was discovered in creek beds on the Haile property in 1827. The property was owned by Benjamin Haile, and the first few years of production came from placer mining. After gold was discovered in schist beds to the sides of the streams, Haile expanded the operation by leasing 18 meter-square (50 ft.) plots to local planters. These planters used slaves to work the small excavations in the agricultural offseason. The gold ore was taken to arrastras where the free gold was liberated and recovered. The excavations were above the water table, generally less than 18 meters (60 ft.) down, and it was noted then that gold could be found embedded in sulfides and difficult to extract."
