Thick westward prograding clastic wedges were deposited along the margin of ancestral North America from Mid-Proterozoic to Mid-Paleozoic time. Periodic rifting and tectonic subsidence resulted in the formation of starved sub-basins along this otherwise passive continental margin. These sub-basins host important sedimentary exhalative barite-zinc-lead-silver deposits. In northeastern British Columbia, a thick succession of Paleozoic basinal facies clastic rocks is preserved within the northwest-trending Kechika Trough. Within the trough, sedimentary exhalative barite and barite-sulfide deposits occur in starved basin sediments of Middle Ordovician, Early Silurian, and Late Devonian age. The last are the most economically sigrrificant and are hosted by carbonaceous cherty argillites and siliceous shales of the Middle to Late Devonian Gunsteel Formation of the Lower Earn Group. The largest deposit, Cirque, has reserves in excess of 35 million tonnes averaging 100J0 (Pb +Zn) and 47 g/t Ag. Other potentially significant deposits include Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mt. Alcock, Fluke, Pie and Elf. Stratiform barite deposits are also common, particularly near the basin-to-shelf transition zone. The Late Devonian barite-sulfide deposits typically are zoned: interlarninated barite-sphalerite-galena-pyrite occurring near suspected vent areas grades outward into bedded barite. Laminated beds of pyrite typically occur in hangingwall siliceous shales, particularly above the inferred vent zone. The apparent absence of epigenetic stringer sulfide zones and footwall alteration implies that the deposits were formed from ponded brines at relatively low temperature. Away from the main deposits, the favourable stratigraphic interval is marked by the presence of thin beds of nodular and laminated barite and thin laminae of pyrite. Thin tuff beds also occur locally in this stratigraphic interval and are evidence for a Late Devonian volcanic event. A paleogeographic reconstruction of the Kechika Trough in Late Devonian to Mississippian time suggests that the barite-sulfide deposits formed in third-order starved basins between uplifted, northwest-trending horst blocks that were capped by shallow-water carbonate banks. The presence of intraformational breccias suggests that fault movement accompanied barite-sulfide precipitation. This tectonic activity may have allowed the escape of heated, overpressured metalliferous brines from permeable reservoirs within the sedimentary pile. Sedimentary exhalative deposits formed where these brines were exhaled as buoyant plumes onto the seafloor, cooled, and ponded in anoxic seafloor depressions.

Other screen openings and configurations have been tried and the screen has been by-passed to change the cloth ""on the fly"". These attempts resulted in fibres (usually wood) to report to #1 Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) tank, where the fibres are trapped in the CIP launder screens, and downstream carbon handling screens causing serious blinding problems. "Once all the hullabaloo about Finance Minister Wilson's April 27 budget died down (or was it an April 26 budget?), the pain of the budget papers began to sink in. Individuals and corporations will have to dig deeper and pay more taxes - and government will continue to dig deeper and spend more. The irony of the situation is that higher tax rates actually make flow-through shares more attractive as a tax-deferral investment - a bittersweet ""bravo"" for the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONFor the first time in Canadian history, a major budget address has taken two days to deliver. Of course, it's not a case of long-windedness, but rather a case of a hastily called press announcement on April 26 in response to a budget leak, followed by a formal budget speech on April 27.The general reaction of the business community to the budget was to the effect that the tax hikes are acceptable, but the government's failure to curb spending is less than acceptable. Mr. Wilson's reported response indicated that the government had never promised to cut spending, and that increased government spending would actually benefit the country. That age-old debate will doubtlessly continue for generations.In any event, three noteworthy components of the budget papers are:• Personal income tax rates increase effective July I, 1989;• A ""large corporations tax"" (in effect 'a corporate ""minimum tax"") is effective July I, 1989; and• Federal sales tax increases are effective from June 30, 1989, to be replaced by a national sales tax in 1991.A brief overview of these and other budget proposals follows."

Prior to installation of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) a series of laboratory tests were carried out to determine the design parameters and also determine key performance indicators (KPIs) for the industrial unit. The design parameters derived from the lab test work were then scaled up to estimate the industrial capacity of the HPGRs to be installed. These parameters include specific power draw, specific throughput, and specific force, rolls speed, product size distribution and wear rate of the rolls. This paper compares the performance of the scale-up procedure against the installed industrial size HPGR. Overall, the specific throughput of the industrial size HPGR is higher by a minimum of 30% compared to the expected scale-up value. As a result of the high specific throughput, the specific power draw and grind sizes are below the scale-up expectations in the commercial application. The impact of these factors also contribute to a lower than expected wear rate on the industrial rolls. Installed rolls achieved a service life in excess of 18,500 hours relative to the target of 6,850 hours predicted from the laboratory testing.

The efficiency of the froth flotation process has long been known to be strongly dependent on particle size. For sulfide minerals, good recoveries are typically achieved in industrial flotation circuits for particles in the 30 to 200 µm size range. Particles outside this critical size are typically lost in industrial operations and rejected to tailings streams due to inherent constraints associated with the physical interactions that occur in the pulp and froth phases of conventional flotation equipment. In response to these limitations, a series of experimental studies were conducted to determine whether particles previously lost as tailings could be economically recovered using a suite of novel flotation technologies developed for upgrading ultra-coarse and ultra-fine particles in the industrial minerals industry. For the case of ultracoarse particles, a fluidized-bed flotation system called the HydroFloatTM separator was tested. The data obtained using this novel flotation device in both laboratory- and pilot-scale trials showed that good recovery of previously lost sulfide values up to 850 µm diameter could be achieved. Similarly, for ultrafine particles, a high-intensity cavitation-based column cell was tested. This technology, which utilizes highshear contacting of slurry and gas, was capable of recovering valuable ultra-fine sulfide that were previously lost due to the low capture efficiency of conventional flotation processes. The objectives of this article are (i) to describe the unique operating principles of these two advanced flotation technologies and associated ancillary classification equipment, (ii) to present laboratory- and pilot-scale experimental test data showing the metallurgical benefits of the proposed novel flowsheet for sulfide tailings processing, and (iii) to provide a generic cost-benefit analysis of the proposed system for recovering lost values in existing sulfide tailing streams.

Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuelcell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies. This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering green house gas emissions. This article outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as the operation of fuelcells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world?s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuelcell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions, is also presented. There is also an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation.

ABSTRACTThis paper describes the main testing procedures that should be carried out to evaluate the capacity and capability of the service brakes on the large-size diesel-electric trucks now in common use at open-pit mining operations. Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. The general trend in the minerals industry is towards the processing of fine grained, disseminated mineral deposits. This has led to an increase in the number of fine/ultra-fine grinding installations using stirred media mills. The challenge is that both the equipment type and the mineralogy of the deposit have an effect on specific energy consumption. Fresnillo PLC recognized this issue and addressed it by providing samples for testing in a laboratory regrind system. The objective of the test program was to determine the specific energy required to achieve a product size of 10 µm (P80). A specific energy plot was generated for both a lead and zinc flotation concentrate. It indicated that 34 kWh/t and 51 kWh/t were required for the two samples (Pb and Zn respectively). This difference highlights the effect of mineralogy on the energy required for fine grinding. The regrind feed and products were submitted to a range of basic mineralogy tests to quantify the mineral differences that could have changed the specific energy requirements. These tests provided general mineralogy, documented optical textures, and provided particle size microscopy. The lead concentrate was found to contain significant amounts of silicates in addition to the dominant sulphide, pyrite. The zinc concentrate was determined to be mostly sphalerite with minor amounts of quartz, chalcopyrite, pyrite and galena. The material testing results illustrate the importance of basic mineralogy studies in conjunction with comminution testing to determine specific energy consumption.

Rock mass characterisation is a critical component of effective stope design. Unexpected excessive stope dilution or uneconomic stope sizes can be the result of rock mass characterisation that is not representative of actual stope conditions. Comprehensive characterisation of the rock forming the stope hanging wall, back, ends and footwall is best done by a rock mechanics or ground control expert, however, this is time consuming and is often limited by available access. There are two general approaches for characterising a stope hanging wall for dilution estimating. Detailed classification and mapping data can be collected in local areas where good exposure is available. Personnel, exposure and time are usually not available to do a thorough analysis for all stopes. The stope hanging walls are then broken into lenses or domains and similar conditions are assumed for each area. The second approach consists of using readily available data such as RQD. Other rock mass properties which influence hanging wall behaviour are estimated based on back analysing a few case histories. Stope design is then based on the variability of the one parameter, such as RQD, that is consistently measured for the rock mass surrounding the ore body. This paper presents a third approach which looks, in depth, at the interpretation of geological core logging data for rock mass characterisation. Several rock mass properties that influence stope design, such as joint alteration, rock mass strength, joint spacing and orientations, have been linked to data collected by the mine geologists. This drill hole logging data was calibrated against underground mapping and used to back analyse the dilution prediction for mined-out stopes.

The environmental assessment of historical mining sites contaminated with various inorganic species, as also the determination of remediation targets require a better knowledge of pollutant-bearing phases. The objective of this paper was to investigate the operational fractionation of arsenic (As) in an As contaminated (ca. 3 wt%) soil collected from a gold mining site in France, where mining activities and smelting processes of gold ores took place until 2004. Single and sequential chemical extraction procedures were performed to evaluate the potential mobility of As according to the fractions to which it was associated in the contaminated soil, and also the part of As sorbed onto soil particles. These procedures used provided information on the nature of As fixation processes in the mining soil studied. Results showed that As appeared mainly sorbed (ca. 72%) with iron on the soil particles, in particular amorphous iron oxyhydroxides. These results confirmed a potential risk of arsenic mobilization under acidic and/or reducing conditions, which frequently occur in mining environment. This research evidenced the importance of the knowledge of As-bearing phases to better predict the mobility of this pollutant and in turn improve the management of As contaminated sites.

The Ni-rich Epidote Zone of the Fraser Mine at Sudbury is characterized by alteration assemblages rich in epidote, actinolite and magnetite which are roughly concentrically zoned and up to hundreds of meters in length. These zones form discrete areas within the igneous Footwall Breccia below the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The assemblages grade from epidotized Footwall Breccia matrix,through actinolite-bearing rocks with few vestiges of original Footwall Breccia textures, into the most intensely altered rock, a magnetite-rich facies. Pentlandite, pyrrhotite and pyrite are the dominant sulfdeminerals; chalcopyrite is minor. The strongest geochemical differences compared to original Footwall Breccia occur where epidote and actinolite dominate the alteration assemblage (EPDZact facies). The most intense alteration facies are typifed by low Cu/(Cu+Ni) values of <0.1. Strong positive correlations exist between Ni and Co, Cu and Au, and among Ir, Os, Ru and Rh. Chondrite-normalized Ni - PGE -Au - Cu plots display an overall increase in all elements from the least to the most intensely altered facies except for Au and Cu. As the proportion of actinolite increases in the EPDZact facies, the chondrite-normalized profles fatten considerably due to low Au and Cu contents. Abundances of Ni, Ir, Ru and Rhalmost ubiquitously increase with degree of alteration. In contrast, Cu, Zn, Ag and Au contents are low in almost all facies. It is suggested that saline hydrothermal fluids moved through the Epidote Zone formation and became more oxidized as they reacted with the Footwall Breccia and with footwall units, including ultramafic rocks. As this trend continued, magnetite-rich zones eventually developed. The occurrence of calcite locally in these magnetite-rich zones suggests that the pH of the fluid increased, causing Cu solubility to drop as activity in the hydrothermal system waned. Sudden changes in fluid composition such as this may have been due to an influx of fluid from bounding ultramafic rocks. Hydrothermal activity was focused along the margins of footwall ultramafic units. Individual hydrother-mal cells may have formed in the Footwall Breccia along pre-existing structures or sulfde concentrations. Metals may have been scavenged from sulfide-bearing Footwall Breccia and possibly Sublayer rocks. Nickel and some PGE were deposited in the Epidote Zone, whereas Cu, Au and Ag continued out-ward into the footwall where they were deposited as Cu-rich footwall veins. Backfilling has become an integral process in underground mining operations, with varying cost-effective forms of application. This study is a part of an overall investigation into the backfill practices at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM). The mine is well-diversified in terms of backfill methodologies and practices. The mine employs different fill methods such as cemented and un-cemented rock fill, slag fill, and cemented hydraulic fill (or a combination of them) in order to fill the voids created by mining activities. The history of backfilling at CCNM has been dominated by cemented and un-cemented slag fill. Each fill method requires operating and engineering guidelines for a cost effective quality control system. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the backfill methods and applications, operating guidelines, and engineering requirements at CCNM.

"The property of McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, is in the east-central part of Rouyn township and about 6 miles east-southeast of the town of Rouyn. It includes 35 claims, the group of 5, staked originally, and 30 claims acquired in later years. The Rouyn-Val d'Or road and the Noranda Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railway both pass within a few hundred feet of the mine.The group of claims in which the mine occurs was first staked in 1922, but gold was not discovered until August 1932 when a schistose zone including veins of quartz carrying considerable free gold was laid bare in a stripped area in the northeastern part of claim R.11604. Diamond drilling undertaken in 1932, and continued into 1933, shouwd that the gold extended for at least 1,000 feet along the strike. A 3-compartment shaft was sunk to 418 feet in 1933. A mill having a capacity of 50 tons a day was constructed in 1934, and enlarged to 150 tons in 1935. Production began in 1934 and continued without interruption to June 1944. Except for a few diamond drill holes, there have been no operations on the property since that time. The maximum depth of the mine workings is 1,50) feet. A total of 368,013 tons of ore having a value of $3,946,752 and an average grade of $11.04 was mined during the years of operation.GEOLOGYThe ore mined from the property occurred within the south limb of an eastward plunging syncline of volcanics and sediments cut off on the north by the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault. Because the rock formations within the syncline have been severed from those outside with which they were originally continuous, their correlation is based almost wholly on lithological similarity. They include an irregular middle zone of conglomerate and greywacke underlain by north and south bands of andesite agglomerate and andesite tuff, in which lenticular bands of pillowed andesite are included."

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

"Place Dome Canada&apos;s Detour Lake Mine is a low-grade gold producer located in northeastern Ontario. Production is targeted for 2850 tonnes of ore per day. As reserves and mining areas continued to be found below and far to the west of the shaft (Fig. 1), it became necessary to review and upgrade the materials handling facilities. This paper deals with the selection, design and construction of an underground crusher and conveyor system capable of handling up to 450 tonnes per hour from the lowest existing level in the mine.BackgroundThe Detour Lake mine site is accessed via secondary Highway 652 which runs northeast out of Cochrane, Ontario. The road consists of 200 Ian of hard top followed by 100 Ian of well maintained gravel to the mine site. A 1500 m airstrip is maintained at the mine site for emergency use. Prior to 1991, the workforce was flown to and from the mine site. Crews were now bused to the site from Timmins. Remnants of a winter road exist to the southeast which at one time ended in La Sarre, Quebec. This was the route used to haul bulk items during the construction period and early production years.A town site has not been established at the site for the current operations. Instead, a rotational scheme is being utilized whereby most personnel will work seven days on site followed by seven days off site. For some employees, however, the work week is termed as a four/three schedule where they work 42 hours between Monday at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with the following three days off. All surface employees and maintenance employees underground work 12-hour shifts. All underground employees work a lOV2-hour shift. Supervisors work a similar schedule as their crews, however, other staff may overlap their rotation during the week.A five-compartment shaft was sunk in 1984 from surface to the 610 m elevation. Shaft stations were established at the 120 m, 260 m, 360 m, 460 m, and 560 m levels. The cage compartment consists of a single deck, 4O-man cage in balance with a counterweight. The cage hoist is an Ingersoll-Rand 10H and is regulated to travel at 4.1 m/s. Two 9 t skips operate in balance at a travel speed of 7.1 mls. The skip hoist is a 3.05 m drum Nordberg. Both hoists are automated to function without a hoistman during normal skipping and cage service runs."

"A process is proposed for the treatment of phosphate rock for the recovery of uranium and the lanthanides. The process assures the production of phosphatic fertilizers without polluting the environment with radioactive material.IntroductionWhile many processes for uranium recovery from phosphoric acid produced by the H2S04 route are known and utilised commercially, little is known about uranium recovery from phosphoric acid produced by the HN03 route1. Advantages of the latter route are both the elimination of the gypsum disposal problem, and the possibility of radium disposal in a controlled way2. Further, the lanthanides originally present in the rock can be recovered if the nitric acid route is used; they will be mostly lost in the gypsum produced by the sulphuric acid route3. In the present work a scheme for the recovery of uranium and the lanthanides from phosphate rock without interfering with the normal route for fertiliser production is proposed using HN03 as a leaching agent. Attention was also given to uranium decay products and their separation so that they might not contaminate the fertiliser4. Further, an attempt was made to defluorinate the leach solution in order to upgrade the fertiliser and at the same time recover the fluorine5. Rapid analytical methods for the determination of uranium, radium, and lanthanides in phosphate rock were developed6,7."

"The Premier mine; owned by Silbak Premier Mines; Limited; is 14 miles from Stewart at the head of Portland canal. Development of the property began in 1918; and since chat time a very large amount of gold and silver as well as some lead and copper have been produced from the mine.The area in the vicinity of the mine is underlain by greenstones tuffs, and sediments of Mesozoic age, belonging to the Bear River formation of the Hazelton group. These rocks are intruded by a stock 2 miles in diameter, composed of orthoclase porphyry and called the Premier porphyry. It sends numerous sill-like and dyke-like tongues into the Bear River formation, and is intruded in turn by a granodiorite outlier of the Coast Range batholith. The orebodies occupy fractures and fracture or shear zones. Primary ore consists chiefly of pyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with some chalcopyrite. The upper 300 feet, or locally 600 feet, contained presumably secondary silver minerals."

Lonmin RoM ball mills are treating two types of feed ore produced by conventional mining and mechanised mining methods. It was reported that reduction in mill throughput was observed when treating the mechanised mining ore. Detailed grinding surveys were conducted for troubleshooting. Ore samples were collected for breakage characterisation using a JKRBT based on different particle density components. XRD analysis was conducted to investigate the association of minerals with density components. The plant surveys and the breakage characterisation tests all suggested that the two mining methods did not significantly affect either the ore breakage properties or the RoM mill performance. Instead, the mill discharge open area exerted a remarkable influence on mill throughput. The RoM ball mill operated at Lonmin K4 Concentrator has been proven to be a versatile mill that performed stably with variations in feed size distribution and feed ore changes by different mining techniques. The reasons are elucidated by the multi-component breakage characterisation and the plant surveys data.
