"These guidelines, implemented in 2003, were recommended by the Diamond Exploration Best Practices Committee established by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. The guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results.“The guidelines are referenced in the Companion Policy of NI 43-101 with a statement that disclosure regarding the reporting of diamond exploration sampling results should conform to them.”Reporting GuidelinesThe following guidelines have been recommended by the Diamond Exploration Best Practices Committee established by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. These guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results.In respect of these guidelines, Diamond Exploration Results are results derived from the initial activities undertaken to investigate a diamond bearing prospect or deposit, to generate tonnage, grade and value estimates that cannot be classified as a Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve. They do not address the earlier stage reporting of geophysical, geochemical or kimberlite indicator mineral results.Public reports of Diamond Exploration Results relating to mineralization not classified as Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve must address the confidence limits of the result and contain sufficient information to allow a considered and balanced judgement of the significance of the results.The objective of these guidelines is to assist public companies and consultants in making appropriate disclosure of diamond exploration results by reporting in a manner which is:Uniform within the diamond exploration industry; Consistent with reporting from other industry sectors .Comprehensive .Unambiguous .The guidelines are not prescriptive. Materiality is the overriding principle that determines the information that should be disclosed. However, where a company or consultant deviates from the guidelines, the disclosure or technical report should state the extent to which the guidelines have not been followed, and the reasons for the deviation.The guidelines do not in any way replace jurisdictional reporting requirements (For example, the requirement for Canadian reporting issuers to comply with Canadian Securities Administrators National Instrument 43-101 by having technical disclosure endorsed by a Qualified Person as defined in that legislation)."

"A series of tests was conducted on Carol Lake iron ore, which contains about 38 wt % hematite and 19 wt % magnetite, to establish a flowsheet for high weight yield by spirals. A pilot plant was run in parallel with the IOC concentrator to simultaneously test two flowsheets on the same feed material. The IOC concentrator processes the ore by treating it directly in a spiral circuit, whereas the pilot plant used a laconite flowsheet which had a low intensity magnetic separator (LIMS) at the front of the circuit. The LIMS produced a non-magnetic (hematite-rich) product and a magnetic (magnetite-rich) product prior to treating the ore in two separate spiral circuits. The results from about 150 tests were evaluated by chemical assays and materials balancing techniques, and a selected test was evaluated by the image analysis and materials balancing technique.The image analysis and materials balancing evaluation showed that a higher hematite recovery was obtained by the hematite spiral circuit than by the IOC concentrator spiral circuit, and a slightly lower magnetite recovery by the magnetite spiral circuit than by the IOC concentrator spiral circuit. Furthermore the hematite recovery by hematite spirals was higher than the magnetite recovery by magnetite spirals. The better hematite recovery was achieved because a higher liberation is obtained for hematite than for magnetite, and the hematite in the Carol Lake ore has a narrower grain size range than magnetite. Consequently, better spiral control can be maintained when processing a hematite-rich spiral feed, than when processing a magnetite-rich spiral feed. Since the feed to the IOC concentrator spiral is a mixture of hematite and magnetite, an intermediate hematite recovery is obtained by the IOC concentrator. INTRODUCTIONA study of characteristics that affect recoveries of hematite and magnetite from the Carol Lake ores of the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), was carried out in connection with a project on designing a flowsheet for maximum weight yields. A pilot plant using a taconite flowsheet was run in parallel with the existing IOC concentrator which uses a classical iron ore flowsheet. About 150 tests were run to compare iron recoveries and weight yields by the spirals in the two flowsheets. Better iron recoveries were indicated for the taconite flowsheet, but the results were not consistent and the reasons for the observed differences were not apparent. The material from one test (Test 61), which gave better iron recoveries for the taconite flowsheet, was evaluated by the image analysis and materials balancing technique. A suite of samples was taken from 5 points in the IOC concentrator and from 8 points in a pilot plant (taconite flowsheet). The samples were analyzed to compare the behaviours of the Carol Lake hematite and magnetite in the spirals of the two flowsheets. The results provided a sound basis for further tests in designing a high weight yield flow sheet."

Digital photogrammetry allows rapid, remote measurement of millions of points, thus providing an unprecedented amount of spatial information. Research is being conducted to explore practical applications of digital photogrammetry for monitoring, surveying and mapping in surface mines. The performance, accuracy and operational ease of digital photogrammetry are discussed and practical aspects of conducting digital photogrammetry surveys are reviewed. Case histories from coal, diamond and limestone mines are presented.

Falling asleep at the wheel of a moving vehicle is not only dangerous but avoidable. It is implicated in up to 30% of all road fatalities in general and up to 65% of mining incidents involving haulage trucks. These types of crashes normally result in serious injury and/or fatality due to the lack of breaking that occurs. However, when a 300 tonne haul truck has a sleep related crash it is not only the safety of the driver that has a high price but also the commercial impact on the mines? productivity and efficiency. We have been developing our ASTiD technology which stands for the Advisory System for Tired Drivers to seamlessly integrate in to Modular Mining?s Dispatch system to provide real-time early warning fatigue risk management. The benefits being driver shift optimisation, sustained productivity and of course less accidents. By monitoring the drivers alertness levels in real-time using ASTID, the Dispatcher becomes empowered to make critical, management decisions that will ultimately prevent serious injury or loss of life and the driver gets to stop when he needs to and not just when he is supposed to. Few persons ever stop to consider how vital an influence minerals, and especially metals, have had upon human history, how they have affected the every-day life of the individual or how at different periods they have altered the course of nations and determined their progress. Students and writers of history have dealt very fully with political history and have given us a great deal of detail about the careers and policies of kings, parliaments and nations, but frequently have not touched the economic causes that have been the real forces influencing the development and carrying out of these policies. So far as minerals are concerned there is no single work from which one can get a concise and consecutive account of the growth in the use of minerals, nor of the diverse ways in which the. geographical distribution, the .search for, the development and the use of mineral resources have affected human progress from the beginning of man's history. The reason for this is quite plain, and when one takes a little time to think of it he begins to appreciate the magnitude of the job and he will realize that the story of minerals and mineral resources touches a tremendous range of human activity, not only of mining .and metallurgy, but the whole field of agricultural and industrial growth, of exploration and colonization, transportation and commerce, monetary system, commercial policy, in short, almost every phase of economic life.

In recent years, there has been a heightened interest in the hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores and concentrates (especially copper sulfide ores and concentrates) mostly in the USA and Chile. Currently, hydrometallurgical operations account for about 30% of the primary copper production. In the present research, the leaching phenomena of IOCG (iron-oxide hosted copper-gold) ores and concentrates were studied. The IOCG ore, which is characterized as having a predominant amount of magnetite with fine chalcopyrite, is currently the center of attention for new copper resources. Heap leaching of IOCG ore is desirable because of its low cost. However, the leaching characteristics of the ores and concentrates and the mechanisms of copper leaching require investigation. This study defines the factors, which affect the leaching operation, such as the ORP, pH and oxidizing agents. Based on these results, the optimal leaching conditions are provided for pilot column leaching test and ultimately, commercial operations.

"Starting January 1, 1987 employers, employees, and other taxpayers are confronted with a new set of rules dealing with the taxation of travel and housing benefits relating to isolated posts in Canada, and tax deductions relating thereto. The new rules may not be the simplest in the world, but they are reasonably fair and at least offer a hitherto unknown degree of certainty as to how such allowances are to be treated. IntroductionThe first shoe fell on February 26, 1986 when Finance Minister Michael Wilson' s first budget presented the framework for the future tax treatment of travel and housing benefits (so-called ""northern allowances"") provided to residents in remote regions of Canada. The second shoe fell some ten months later on December 22, 1986 when the Minister of Finance filled in the earlier announced framework with detailed rules. We now have a complete picture of the tax treatment of northern allowances. Here is what the picture looks like with effect from January 1, 1987.According to Revenue Canada, the net housing benefit to employees will be equal to the value of the accommodation provided, less any rent they have paid. In major centres such as Yellowknife and Whitehorse, having a developed rental housing market, the benefit amount will be based on the fair market value of the rental accommodation in that location. In other areas, employers will be required to value the housing benefits and, to assist employers, Revenue Canada has provided the following guidelines: Common shelter- $100 per month including the value of subsidized utilities Apartment! duplex-$270 per month excluding the value of subsidized utilities, or $400 per month including the value of subsidized utilities House-$450 per month excluding the value of subsidized utilities, or $650 per month in- c1uding the value of subsidized utilities.The amounts established as the values of accommodation will be adjusted annually after 1987 based on the housing component of the Consumer Price Index."

"The localization of orebodies by geological structures is well demonstrated at the Copper Mountain mine of southwestern British Columbia. These extensive deposits; owned and workd by the Granby Consolidated Mining; Smelting and Power Company; are at Princeton; abo!lt 150 miles east of Vancouver and 40 miles north of the International boundary. The geology of the deposits and the surrounding district is described by the present writer in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey of Canada; pub1ished in 1934.The main geological feature is a gabbro stock, elliptical in plan, with a major axis about 5 miles in length extending in a northwest-southeast direction. The stock varies in composition from syeno-gabbro (gabbro plus orthoclase) through diorite and syenite to a core of syenite pegmatite. All the members contain orthoclase, which ·increases greatly in amount toward the centre, but all are devoid of quartz. The stock has been injected into a steeply folded series of volcanic flows, breccias, and tuffs that strike more or less parallel with the major axis of the stock. On its northeast side the stock is flanked by a band of fairly coarse volcanic breccia of andesitic composition and ·having fragments up to several inches in length. Where this breccia is tangential to the stock it is both dynamically and chemically metamorphosed to a marked degree, and within the zone of this metamorphism are enclosed the copper deposit~. The ore consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, and a little magnetite occurring as disseminated grains and small veinlets in the metamorphosed breccias. The only gangue minerals are orthoclase, albite, oligoclase, and biotite. The two most common vein minerals, quartz and pyrite, are conspicuously rare or absent. The dynamic metamorphism has produced two well-defined structures, namely, a strong schistosity parallel with the curved vertical contact of the stock and a very striking set of small, straight, nearly parallel open fractures that stand nearly vertical and at right angles to both the schistosity and the stock contact. These are called the ore fractures."

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

"Some improvements are carried out for elasto-plastic model by taking the shear dilation effects and relaxation effects of deep rocks into accounted. The high pressure equations of states with Mie-Grüneisen form are also introduced to describe the relation of pressure-volumetric strain. Numerical simulations of free field responses for deep underground explosions are conducted by using the user subroutines which compiled by means of the secondary development functions of LS-DYNA9703D codes. It is indicated that the dynamic responses of free field are well simulated based on this improved elasto-plastic model, and the analytical results are in good agreement with the data of U.S. Hardhat nuclear test.INTRODUCTIONDynamic behaviors of deep rocks for underground explosions are obviously different from that of shallow underground explosions and have aroused great attentions of international experts who work for rock engineering. The dynamic models of deep rocks could be roughly divided into classic elasto-plastic model and fracture damage model according to different theoretical foundation. M. E.Kipp and D. E.Grady et al. are the outstanding representatives who engaged in the researches of fracture damage mechanics. Researches of dynamic problems for geomaterials were carried out by C.C.Grigorian and the conclusion that incompressible elasto-plastic medium model could not be used to solve the problems of closed underground explosion was derived, and therefore C.C.Grigorian model was proposed. In this model, C.C.Grigorian assumed that the average hydrostatic pressures and the densities of medium had one to one relationship, and the path of loading or unloading is different from each other. For shear deformations, analytical solutions of the problems were derived according to the model which was slightly different from Prandtl-Reuss model, the constitutive equations were closed by Mises-Schleiher constitutive model. However, the analysis showed that there were two inadequacies in C.C.Grigorian model. Firstly, the shear dilation effects of fractured medium after wave front could not be considered. Secondly, the relaxation characteristics of the rocks in fractured region were not taken into account."

"The stability of underground structures made (especially) in jointed rock mass is of the utmost important to designers, engineers and operators. Rock bolting is generally being practised to reinforce excavation walls and roofs by minimizing the movement of rock joints. This study proposes a new analytical model for the prediction of displacements, axial load and shear stress of a fully grouted rock bolt intersected by single or multiple rock joint(s). The governing equations for rock bolt are derived based on the assumption that shear force generated by slippage along the bolt-grout interface has a linear relationship with respect to the relative displacement at the interface. The proposed model is novel compared to the existing literature in the sense that it accounts for rock kinematics as an enriched sum of a continuous part (elastic) and a discontunous (jump) part due to the presence of joint planes. The complete solution of the bolt displacement, axial load and shear stress is derived as a function of the rock displacements, and, it comprises of Heaviside and/or Dirac delta functions in the solution space due to the jump at the intersection point(s) of bolt(s) and joint(s).Our novel solution is able to predict the elastic behavior of a grouted bolt, subjected to opening of the joint planes in pull-out test and also in excavated tunnel. These two cases also serve as benchmarks for grouted rock bolts with multiple joints and can be used for validation of numerical and experimental models. Further, the solution is applied to analyze the behaviour of grouted rock bolt as well as cable bolt installed in circular tunnel, with variations in rock joint(s) opening displacement, shear stiffness in the boltgrout interface and locations of the joint planes. Results indicate that for a specified grout stiffness, the maximum axial load developed in the bolt for discontinuous distribution of rock mass displacement is significantly higher than that of the continuous distribution of rock displacement. This paper provides an analytical interpretation of bolt beaviour considering multiple joint planes with variable joint opening displacements. The results obtained via the analytical method are in line with the corresponding investigation done by other authors. Thus, our analytical treatment can be used to understand bolt behaviour in realistic situations."

On this occasion, however, the President of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, our good friend Dr. H. J. Fraser, has been our host at the enjoyable reception preceding this Institute Luncheon, which luncheon was sponsored by our official host, The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, one of our .constituent bodies.

"Abstract - The Minas de Oro Cu-Au skarn and replacement deposits are located in the highlands of central Honduras, 90 km north-northwest of the capital of Tegucigalpa.The deposits formed in Cretaceous volcano-sedimentary rocks following the emplacement of an early Paleocene granodiorite to dacite intrusive complex. Three types of skarn (Type IA, IB, and IC) and a low-temperature replacement mineralization (Type II) are recognized. Type IA skarn consists of massive brown-green andradite and lesser magnetite and pyroxene. Type IB skarn has magnetite + hematite as the main constituent and garnet <50%. Type IC skarn comprises >50% pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite with interstitial garnet or pyroxene. Au and Cu occur in potentially economic concentrations in all skarn types while other metals such as Ag, Pb, Zn, and Mo are locally present in significant quantities. The highly variable distribution and nature of the skarn deposits is controlled by: (1) intrusive activity, (2) composition of host rocks, (3) faulting and fracturing, and (4) attitude of host carbonates.Type II Au-Cu-As mineralization occurs in calcareous sandstone and conglomerate 2 km distal from skarns and comprises clots of Cu sulfides hosted within a zone of brecciation and quartz flooding. Garnet and/or magnetite skarn is not present and the mineralizing event appears to have been a low-temperature replacement type.The similarity of coeval Au-Cu-Fe skarns in central Guerrero, southern Mexico to Minas de Oro skarns, and the similar local stratigraphy is consistent with the generally accepted theory that the Chortis block originated from southern Mexico and during the Tertiary moved southeast to its present position."

"One of the most significant developments in environmental law has been the development of mandatory project review processes, at both the federal and provincial levels.FederalWhile, in the past, project review processes have, f or the most part, been spelled out in guidelines, the guidelines have not had the force of law. All that has changed, particularly at the federal level, with the Federal Court decisions commonly referred to as the Old Man River and Alameda and Rafferty Dam cases. These decisions, taken as a whole, are authority for the proposition that the Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order, SOR 82-487 is a law of general application, not a mere guideline which may or may not be applied. This federal environmental assessment process first provides for a screening, and, depending upon the results of the screening process, the possibility of a public review. This federal process only applies, however, when the proposal is being undertaken by a federal department, or where the Government of Canada makes a financial contribution, or where federal lands are involved, or where a federal licence or permit is required.Bill C-78, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, will replace the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order once it has been passed by Parliament. Currently the bill is being widely discussed, both between governments as well as public interest groups.ProvincialOn the provincial scene, there are three project review processes, one concerned with new mines, the second with energy projects and the third with all other major projects. The most recent initiatives taken by British Columbia are twofold. First, the Mine Development Review Process which was in the form of a guideline, has been replaced by the Mine Development Assessment Act. Second, the Major Project Review Process has been formulated and is to apply to four main categories of major projects:1. Pulp and paper production;2. Mineral smelting and refining;3. Chemical products; and4. Major ports and marinas.Energy projects are governed by the Energy Project Review Process which is legislatively mandated under the Utilities Commission Act."

"This paper briefly reviews some of the gravity research done at McGill University and current Canadian operating practices, with emphasis on results of interest for operators. The following topics are addressed: security, economics, predicting recovery, circuit optimization, unit selection and final upgrading. Emphasis is placed on the Knelson Concentrator.The topic of security and economics are addressed jointly, in terms of the place of the gravity circuit in the mill flowsheet. Actual plant experience is drawn upon to identify potential problems and actual solutions.Predicting primary recovery is linked with a characterization of the ore, the choice of a circuit, and the fraction of the bleed used. Factors such as feed preparation, preliminary upgrading, fraction of recycle treated, ability to recover fines and location of the bleed are discussed.Final upgrading is achieved almost only by tabling and smelting. This can lead to fine gold recovery problems when more effective units are used upstream. "The Kiruna Electric System is an all electric ramp haulage system developed for underground mining. This electric truck haulage system is currently operating on three continents. This paper will review the technology of the system, existing installations as well as the economical benefits to the mining industry. The system was designed and developed to extend and exploit the economical advantages of ramp haulage. Performance information is provided. IntroductionThe Kiruna Electric System has been the subject of a number of technical papers over the past sever al years. During that period, the content of the presentations has changed from concept and theory to prototype testing to description of installed and operating systems.The intent of this paper is threefold:1. to present a brief review of the technical features of the Kiruna Electric Systems;2. to review the existing installations with performance data; and3. to provide a description of on-going developments within the Kiruna Electric Program during 1991.The Kiruna Electric is a high capacity ramp haulage system for underground mining operations due to an All-Electric Drive System, including two heavy duty electric traction motors. "A procedure f or constructing a grinding mill dynamic model is proposed. This model is used in a dynamic simulator of are grinding circuits. The simulator is designed for flexible flow sheets involving different grinding mills and particle classifiers and is able to accept several single variable PID control loops. The dynamic model is validated on a laboratory ball mill, and calibrated to an industrial installation. The simulator is used for characterization of grinding circuit dynamic behaviour and tuning of control strategiesIntroductionThe ore grinding operation is a critical step of the ore preparation process because it is the last comminution stage before the separation of minerals. The properties of the ground minerals to be concentrated, control the quality and efficiency of the separation process. This is why it is important to control properly the operation of the last grinding stage, commonly constituted of a closed circuit ball mill with classifier . To provide an adequate fine product, the grinding operation should compensate for the perturbations of the feed characteristics (size analysis, grindability, etc.). The main objective is to maintain a constant size distribution for providing stable operating conditions to the separation units. Simultaneously another usual objective is to operate the grinding circuit at a maximum capacity.Automatic control applied to grinding circuit s is the appropriate approach to improve its operation. Most frequently average optimal operating conditions are determined from steady -state performances of the circuit , and the automatic control is used for stabilizing the operation at selected values of the process variables . In the traditional approach, one or several single input! single output (SISO) control loops are implemented and empirically tuned. Advanced control practices&apos;!&apos; are based on a quantitative analysis of the circuit dynamics, which could also give a basis for the tuning of conventional SISO 100ps(2)."
