The concepts of geostatistics are commonly difficult to understand for students, even for those with a strong mathematical background. A main problem is certainly the link between the variation of the parameter value in space or time, and the calculated experimental semivariogram as a function of the interdistance, but over the entire area. Another problem is to differentiate between directional and omnidirectional semivariograms and the way they have to be interpreted. Furthermore first time users of geostatistics often do not want to struggle through different books with the whole geostatistical background before using it. Too often this leads to using geostatistics as a black box with all the risks linked to it. That is the main reason that we developed some interactive tools based on the free public domain software R. We aim by developing three different modules to assist individual first time users, but also regular students and teachers to get a feeling of the importance of the various aspects in conducting a good geostatistical study. The modules show directly e.g. the impact of deleting, moving or adding data points, of changing parameters of the semivariogram model and of the geometrical parameters during kriging. The first module allows making the link between the variation of the parameter values in one direction and the calculated experimental semivariogram, and this for different given datasets. The second module covers two dimensional datasets and apart from calculating the semivariogram values, models can be fitted to the calculated data. A distinction can be made between omni-directional and directional semivariograms, including the effect of the tolerance on the angle and lag-distance. The third module focuses on ordinary kriging of point values in two dimensions. The aim of the interactive tools developed is limited to educational purposes only, i.e. to visualize some basic concepts for different pre-selected types of spatial variation. They do not intend to do a geostatistical study on a certain dataset (for this purpose there exists already a broad spectrum of good software packages). The original intention of developing the three modules was aimed at users with no or a limited amount of geostatistical experience. However, these modules seem also very useful to remain critical for experienced users. One should never forget that in a real application one does not have a complete view of the phenomenon studied. Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54' North, longitude 158" 17' West; and latitude 23" 42' North, longitude 163° 45' West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

"Recent land-use decisions in British Colwnbia, and the publication of a report on compensation for expropriations of resource interests, have highlighted the nature of land use policies. Landuse decisions, such as the creation of large new parks, raise three principal issues which have implications for how land-use policy is conducted and how it impacts on the mining industry. The first is the identity of the parties advocating different land-use policies and their motives for doing so, the second is the changing nature of benefits derived from land, and the third is the change of property-rights regime which is devised to accommodate the (changing) benefits from using land and natural resources, as well as the interests of the different parties involved.Involved Parties and BenefitsThe process of establishing or modifying property rights depends on the interest groups involved. Three distinct categories, each with distinct incentives which can influence the process, must be distinguished: private claimants, politicians and bureaucrats (Libecap, 1989).The first groups claim rents and management powers through asset ownership. They may be incumbent owners seeking enforcement of the status quo, new claimants seeking redistribution of assets, or third parties who depend on the distribution of assets (e.g. lenders, labour suppliers and contractors). Some infonnal property arrangements can be negotiated within the group whereas others requires action in the political arena through lobbying politicians for (re)allocation of property rights and influencing bureaucrats for favourable administrative decisions. The second category is politicians, who direct the powers of the state to change or enforce property rights. Both incwnbents and office-seekers fall in this category and their actions and opinions are shaped by their constituencies and financial backers. However, not all causes can be championed and trade-offs have to be made, resulting in decisions that maximize political benefits. The third category of parties in the process is the bureaucrats. The power to manage has been delegated by politicians but bureaucrats also have opportunities and incentives to further their own interests. These can include maintaining or expanding jurisdictional turf or increasing operating budgets (Libecap, 1989)"

"The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

"The through-put and energy efficiency of an autogenous (AG) grinding mill are adversely affected by variability in rock size and rock competency. This applies to both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous (SAG) grinding circuits. In this paper we focus on an approach to overcome the problem of inconsistent mill through-put related to variability in mill feed size and rock competency. The focus is on ores containing hard, competent rock. This approach consists of preparing feed to an autogenous mill that contains 20% coarse media rock and 80% of material crushed to pass 37 mm. Results of pilot-scale testing for two iron-ores will be presented to show that a 10% to 12% reduction in unit energy consumption is possible with prepared feed, compared with feeding the mill with conventional primary crusher discharge.INTRODUCTIONIn the past 30 years or so, autogenous grinding and semi-autogenous grinding have been the comminution technologies of choice for most mining and mineral processing operations. These technologies saved both capital and operating expenses associated with the installation and operation of multi-stage crushing and screening plants required for conventional rod mill – ball mill circuits. However, SAG and AG are inherently inefficient in terms of energy consumption, especially for very hard ores. In cases of hard ore, changing characteristics of rock fed to the mills causes wide fluctuations in mill capacity, which contributes to the inefficiency. Rising electric power costs make this the most expensive unit operation used in the extraction of valuable minerals from an ore. The objective of the concept discussed here is to reduce the energy consumption in AG grinding for hard ore and eliminate the use of large-diameter steel grinding balls that are required for SAG grinding"

"The Quesnel Trough is underlain by a thick sequence of mainly Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic volcanic-clastic and sedimentary rocks that lie between the highly deformed Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in the Omineca Geanticline to the east and the Upper Paleozoic Cache Creek Group in the Pinchi Geanticline to the west. Broad areas of the Trough between Kamloops and Williams Lake are covered by Eocene volcanics and sediments and by Miocene-Pliocene plateau lava. Granitic intrusions were apparently mainly confined to two major episodes; one about 200 m.y. ago (coeval with the Guichon batholith) and one about 100 m.y. ago. In addition, the region includes small granitic and syenitic intrusions, some porphyritic, that may be all or partly still younger. Exposures in the region are generally small and scattered, obscured by widespread, not necessarily thick glacial deposits. This, together with the extensive Tertiary cover, makes prospecting difficult. The part of the Quesnel Trough discussed here is the direct northwest-ward extension of the copper-rich Kamloops-Merritt-Princeton region. It contains the Boss Mountain molybdenum mine, related to a breccia zone induced in a batholith of the oldest group by a younger intrusion, and the Cariboo Bell copper deposit in Lower Jurassic volcanic-elastic rocks and syenitic intrusions. The Gibraltar deposit, in a 200-m.y. intrusion, is within the Pinchi Geanticline close to the margin of the Trough. Molybdenum prospects are mainly restricted within or near the 100-m.y. granitic rocks. Copper prospects, on the other hand, are most prominent in the volcanic-elastic rocks and in the 200-m.y.-old granitic rocks, although they can also be spatially related to younger intrusions. Copper thus has a wide potential distribution.The writers believe that the region is deserving of careful and comprehensive exploration by directly applying the knowledge and techniques developed in the important producing areas to the south. All of the major pre-Tertiary geological elements seem to have potential for mineral deposits; none should be ignored. A thorough knowledge of the thickness and distribution of the Tertiary rocks and the development of geophysical methods to ""see through"" them is of particular importance."

Further, the Canadian company that invests abroad a host of complex rules. This month, Tax Notes examines some of the major Canadian tax considerations confronting the Canadian company that wants to invest abroad. IntroductionCanadian-based mining companies are investing abroad more than ever before. These foreign investments trigger a complex set of tax rules that are distinct from the rules that apply to Canadian investments. In most cases, careful tax planning is mandatory if the company's tax liabilities are to be minimized. This article summarizes the main tax considerations that need to be taken into account with respect to a mining investment outside Canada.Branch Versus SubsidiaryOne of the first questions that arises in connection with a prospective foreign investment is ""Should we invest directly (that is, in a branch operation), or should we invest through a foreign subsidiary?"". In the case of a branch operation, the Canadian company owns and operates the business directly - that is, the foreign business assets are part of the Canadian legal entity. In the case of a foreign subsidiary, the foreign business operation is owned and managed by that subsidiary. The tax treatment of a branch and a subsidiary can be quite different."

"INTRODUCTIONThe proper selection of carbon for a gold carbon in pulp (CIP) circuit involves careful evaluation of several physical, chemical and economic factors. A series of evaluations are required to maximize gold recovery at the lowest capital and operating costs, whether the carbon is selected for an existing gold mill circuit or a new mill under design.Although evaluation may proceed through various stages, it is the intent of this paper to outline some of the preliminary testwork that should be carried out to screen potential carbons for a particular application.An examination of the specification sheets supplied by the various carbon manufacturers may indicate some desirable properties on which to make cursory selection. This exercise by itself will not provide the basic data needed for selecting the best carbon for a particular ore pulp and metallurgical circuit. The necessity of further metallurgical evaluation is indicated by the fact that different carbons perform differently depending on the physical and chemical nature of the leach pulp. In the case of an existing mill, actual leach slurries using mill water are available and should be used for testwork. In the case of new mills, leach pulps must be prepared to simulate the proposed circuit.Five coconut shell activated carbons were obtained from various suppliers, all reported to be 6 x 16 mesh carbons recommended for CIP circuits. A metallurgical evaluation was made utilizing two leach pulps with significantly different characteristics. This paper describes the test procedures utilized and the results obtained from the testwork."

Indoor localization has gained importance as it has the potential to improve various processes related to the lifecycle management of facilities and to deliver personalized and location-based services. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based systems, on the other hand, have been widely used in different applications in construction and maintenance. This paper investigates the usage of RFID technology for indoor localization of RFID equipped movable assets during the operation phase of facilities. The location-related data on RFID tags attached to fixed assets are extracted from a Building Information Model (BIM) and can provide context-aware information inside the building which can improve Facilities Management (FM) processes. The paper proposes a new approach to use received signals from available reference tags in the building attached to fixed assets to locate movable assets. The approach uses signal pattern matching and clustering algorithms for localization. As a result, a user equipped with an RFID reader is able to estimate the location of target assets, without having access to any Real- Time Location System (RTLS) infrastructure. A case study is performed to demonstrate the feasibility of proposed methods.

In the last 30 years numerous mining plants have been developed in North America but only a handful of these have required freezing the area where the shaft was sunk. The most recent mine shaft to be sunk using this technique is located on an island off the coast of Louisiana. The project required the input and skills of numerous people in several companies, including the owner, engineers and contractors. The Cote Blanche installation is one of several mines in the area which extract salt from a dome which extends under the Gulf of Mexico. The geology of this area is, however, markedly different from others in the region because there is approximately 460 ft of water logged soil above the salt dome. Because it is not possible to sink a shaft in ground that is this soft, the overburden where the shaft is located must be frozen before excavation can take place. The Cote Blanche mine is a producing facility which was built in 1958 by the Carey Salt Company. The original facility included a 14 ft diameter production shaft and a 7 ft-8 in diameter service/ventilation/escape shaft. This system was installed by The Cementation Company. In 1996 the owner decided to improve both the mine ventilation and production hoisting system by installing a third shaft. This shaft would be designed to extract 650 tons per hour from a depth of 1600 ft and provide 500,000 cfm of ventilation to the mine at a maxium design pressure of 4 in WG. These parameters resulted in a requirement for a 16 ft finished inside diameter concrete lined shaft and a headframe designed as a pressure bulkhead. Because the mine would operate from one level only, the most efficient hoisting system for the application was determined to be a ground mounted koepe running on rope guides. With these criteria fixed Cote Blanche embarked on a program which would see construction start in June 1998 with the first salt produced in February 2001 at a cost of $US18M. The major players in the design and construction were G.L. Tiley & Associates Ltd., BLM Bharti Engineering, Freezewall Inc., Phillips Mining, Geotechnical and Grouting Inc., Don Hart Consulting and Dynatec International.

"Equity Silver Mines Limited owns and operates an open pit silver 111ine located 37 km southeast of Houston in the Omineca District of British Columbia, Figure l. The property is approximately 300 km west of Prince George and 417 km east of the Port of Prince Rupert. This is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the five largest silver producers in the western world.Equity is a subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, which owns 70 of Equity's issued and outstanding Common Shares. Placer was responsible for financing and developing the property and now provides general management and administrative services.All mining is by open pit methods, using three 1600 P&H shovels, eight 45 t Caterpillar and three 77 t Wabco trucks, three 40R rotary drills, two D8 dozers, one 9888 front-end loader and other ancillary equipment. We are now phasing out the Southern Tail pit and bringing the Main Zone into productior; see Figure 2.Comminution in the concentrator is achieved via primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers followed by rod and ball mills. The flotation circuit, with Southern Tail ore, produces a concentrate containing between 3 000 and 6 500 g of silver per tonne, 201 copper, and 25 g of gold per tonne. Running Main Zone ore, concentrate grades will decrease to about 4 500 g of silver per tonne, 17% copper, and 18 g of gold per tonne. Design milling capacity is 5 300 tpd, which is often exceeded.The flotation concentrate contains relatively high levels of antimony and arsenic. Because of these impurities Equity was unable to obtain economically acceptable long-term sales contracts for flotation concentrate. For this reason a leaching process was developed, and a plant designed, built and placed in operation. Due to the complex and unique technology involved, many start-up problems were encountered but by March 1983 the leach plant was considered ""fully operational."" This paper describes some of our progress and problems in bringing the Equity leach plant through its start-up period."

"ANSTO Minerals and Northern Minerals have been working together since 2012 on the process flowsheet development for the Browns Range project for the recovery of the heavy rare earths (Dy – Lu, + Y). Initial efforts were directed toward defining the most efficient and direct flowsheet for the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS), issued in June 2014, then towards the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), issued in February 2015. These goals were achieved by undertaking comprehensive laboratory and continuous piloting programs. Further improvements to the flowsheet following the DFS have been made. This publication provides an overview of the evolution of the process flowsheet based on these laboratory and piloting programs from the PFS through the DFS and beyond.INTRODUCTIONNorthern Minerals Ltd (Northern) has been working on developing their flagship project at Browns Range for the recovery of the heavy rare earth elements (HRE, Dy – Lu, + Y). The project is located in the north of Western Australia as shown in Figure 1. The Total Mineral Resource at the project is currently estimated at 8.98 Mt @ 0.63% total rare earth oxides (TREO) comprising 56,663 t of contained TREO using a cut-off grade of 0.15% TREO. Of the Total Mineral Resource, 58% is classified as Indicated Resource, with the remainder in the Inferred Resource category.The deposit is characterised by breccia-hosted, hydrothermal, HRE-rich, xenotime mineralisation. The main gangue mineral associated with the xenotime is quartz. The distribution of rare earths (RE) observed for the xenotime mineralisation at Browns Range is presented in Figure 2. Extensive test work has shown that the xenotime can be readily beneficiated to between 20 – 40% rare earth oxide (REO) using a process consisting of crushing and grinding, followed by magnetic separation and flotation steps. Continuous piloting of this process was conducted on ~80 t of trench-sourced ore in late 2013 at SGS Perth, to produce ~2 t of ~20% REO mineral concentrate (MC) for hydrometallurgical testing. The composition of the MC produced during piloting is presented in Table 1."

"Mathematics, process theory, process practice and computer applications are the main disciplines that contribute to developing useful techniques for computer simulation of mineral and coal processing plants. As in any multidisciplinary effort, communication or transfer mechanisms must be developed to facilitate the flow of experience between participants of different backgrounds. These mechanisms include written reports, verbal communications, workshops and transfer of computer programs. The SPOC project at CANMET is devoted to computer simulation and as such has addressed, or will address in the near future, problems inherent to methodology transfer. The first major output of the project was the material balance program, MATBAL2, which has been acquired by over 30 organizations. Program documentation, industrial workshops and summer student programs have been used to effect the transfer. This experience is discussed and the future outlined.IntroductionComputer simulation has become a common tool in many different fields of human activity during the past two decades, as illustrated in Figure 1. The total number of articles abstracted in Chemical Abstracts under the general subject entry of “Simulation"" has been following a pseudo-exponential growth since 1972 and was approaching 5000 in 1980, whereas no such entry was even used prior to 1967. This represents over a dozen papers published daily on the subject and should continue to grow to higher figures. Still, progress toward accepting modelling and simulation in mineral and coal processing has been very slow. It will be shown later that this slow acceptance is a cause rather than a consequence of the limited success of the various attempts made so far to draw unambiguous benefits from simulation applications. The real cause of the difficulties in fully accepting the new methodology lies in the multidisciplinary aspect of modelling and simulation, which does not suit the traditionally conservative approach that prevails in designing and operating large and costly processing plants."

Une faille majeure, la faille Harricana, passe de façon subconcordante au contact de ces deux ensembles.La minéralisation aurifère, de 2 à 5 m d’épaisseur moyenne, est liée a une zone carbonatée, comprise entre des tufs felsiques, argilites et sédiments chimiques (éponte inferieure) et des argilites carbonatées (éponte supérieure). Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. L’or est en fines particules associées directement à ces grains de pyrite de texture cataclastique.Deux modelés ont été for mules jusqu' a présent pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: une thèse syngenetique (Barnett et a/.1982) et une thèse épigénétique (Wyman et al. 1986). "Numerous processes co-exist for metal extraction and for metal removal from effluents of mining operations. Each process enjoys an economic advantage, including environmental cost and benefit, if utilized in a specific situation. This applies equally to biohydrometallurgical processes. This paper will analyze four types of biohydrometallurgical processes for their economic and environmental attributes: biooxidation of refractory gold, extraction of copper from sulfide, metal removal from effluents by active sulfate reduction, and metal removal by the use of wetlands. By examining the economic and environmental advantages of these processes, generalizations can formalized and it becomes possible to define niches of application where biohydrometallurgy can be considered. Our analysis shows that biohydrometallurgy can be efficient at small scale, be more environmentally friendly than conventional technologies and is relatively easier to operate. The higher financial risk associated with unproven technologies at the commercial scale is being eliminated as biotechnology-based plants are put into production.IntroductionBiotechnology can be described as the rational exploitation of the activities of living cells or parts thereof, requiring an integrated multidisciplinary approach between biological and technical disciplines. Microbiology, biochemistry, botany, molecular biology, chemistry and engineering all contribute to practical applications in the extraction, manufacturing and service industries, and in environmental management. Considerable commercial success of biotechnology has been achieved in several sectors, including health care, agriculture, forestry and aquaculture.Over the past 40 years, industry, research organizations, government laboratories, and universities in a large number of countries have participated in investigating the utilization of biotechnology applications in mining. Today, several technologies are used commercially in well understood and engineered systems which can be grouped under the term biohydrometallurgy. Many more technologies have been demonstrated at laboratory or pilot plant scale. Although initial developments and commercial applications were aimed at metal extraction, the dramatic increase in environmental awareness, the practice of sound environmental management demanded by more stringent regulations over the past decade, and the need for low cost treatment in perpetuity, has led to serious investigation of biotechnology for environmental control. In addition, increasing power costs, lowering of ore grades, and decreasing commodity price in real dollar terms require the use of highly efficient and competitive extractive technologies."

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). "The mid-Cretaceous Seagull batholith intruded Mississippian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and Jurassic(?) granitic and ultramafic rocks within the Omineca Crystalline Belt in the Yuk on Territory near the British Columbia boundary. Leucoerotic fluorine- and boron-rich granites of the batholith exhibit many textural variations from aplite to pegmatite, but are dominated by a coarse-grained seriate unit and a fine-grained porphyritic unit.Four distinctive tin vein occurrences within and near the batholith are described, the most interesting of which is the MC showing of quartz-calcite-chlorite-cassiterite veins in intensely fractured zones of sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three other showings occur within the batholith:J) the EC showing of quartz-fluorite-cassiterite-sulphide veins with prominent muscovite-illite alteration;2) the DU showing of quartz-hematite-fluorite-sulphide- sulphide-cassiterite with considerable manganese staining and sericitic alteration; and3) the VAL showing of quartz-tourmaline-cassiterite-fluorite-arsenopyrite veins with little associated alteration.Most cassiterite occurrences are within easterly-trending, vertical structures and all occurrences are thought to represent parts of a single system. These mineralogical and physical variations are apparently related to the distance from the upper contact of the batholith.For the Seagull batholith, Rb-Sr isotopic data give a 100±1.4 Ma isochron age that is concordant with the K-Ar model age from biotite of 101±4 Ma. Initial Sr isotopic ratios for the batholith are high at 0.712, indicating an old, sialic crustal source for this pluton. This initial ratio is similar to values for granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits in the Yukon Territory. The high initial ratio for Sr, the high Si02 content, the high s/I index, the presence of normative corundum. leucogranitic composition and associated lithophile-tungsten mineralization demonstrate that the Seagull batholith is probably an S-type granitic body. This factor is significant to regional exploration jar tin and tungsten in the Canadian Cordillera."

"Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (I 956-1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and thereby significantly inhibit acid generation have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited' s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on ""Fix Dmacs"" technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.IntroductionCost-effective management of multiple tailings management areas distributed throughout a 35 km watershed requires the application of leading-edge environmental technologies. Long-term monitoring, care and maintenance costs must first be minimized through the application of decommissioning technologies that inhibit acid generation and minimize the release of contaminants from the sites. On-going operating costs must then be controlled through the application of environmental management strategies that optimize the allocation of resources while ensuring compliance with regulatory and Company environmental requirements.Using sites in the Serpent River Watershed as an example, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of water covers as a decommissioning strategy to inhibit acid generation. In addition, the Telemetered Environmental Operating Control System and Regional Environmental Information Management System are reviewed as examples of the application of environmental technologies to the management of environmental programs."

"Brunswick Mining has investigated grinding media optimization for the purpose of improving the flotation feed and regrind product size distributions to enhance metal recoveries. The paper presents findings in the on-going testing of various sizes and shapes of grinding media. Breakage rates are used as an aid to assess the effect of grinding media. Results of empirical and phenomenological analyses demonstrate the importance of adequate selection of media sizes on the milling operation.INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mine near Bathurst, New-Brunswick. The No. 12 ore body is an extremely fine grained volcanogenic massive lead, zinc, copper, silver, iron sulphide body between two metamorphosed sedimentary and felsic volcanic rock units. Pyrite content is about 60% with 20% non-sulphide minerals, mainly silica and chlorite. The operation is currently processing 10,500 tonnes of ore per day in conventional crushing, grinding, differential flotation and dewatering circuits. Details on the circuit can be found elsewhere (e.g. Hendriks and Ounpuu, 1985; Grant et al., 1991).The mill has operated for more than 25 years and despite the past milling experience, there has been much disagreement as to the required grind size. Since 1964, fineness of the flotation feed ranged from 60% to 80% passing 400 mesh (37µm) and averaged slightly over 71%in1992. Results from mineralogical analysis (Petruk and Schnarr,1981; Coleman, 1988), Brunswick metallurgical laboratory (Grant et al., 1991; Shannon et al., 1992) and Lakefield pilot plant tests (Hendriks, 1984; Hendriks and Ounpuu, 1985) clearly indicate that improved metal recoveries can be achieved by an increase in the fineness of grind, and more specifically by maximizing the amount of material in the 15-25µm range."
