At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-8n-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated minerali.zation. In a zone closer to the host rockgranite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted sub-angular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magmatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagmatic, low-temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magrnatichydrothermal and hydromagrnatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

A cell-level nonlinear dynamic model of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) based on physical diffusion principles is built in this note. It demonstrates that reactant diffusion processes from gas flow bulks to triple phase boundaries (tpbs) play an important role in the dynamic behaviors of SOFC. The simulation shows that under certain condition, the effect of the double layer capacitance may be neglected. The phenomenon of slow rise of voltage in current interrupt experiment may be explained by the dynamic behaviors of partial pressures in the vicinity immediately above tpbs.

"This paper reports solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) carried out using a microfluidic device and considers the REE loading limit of the organic phase under laminar flow. The microfluidic device contacts aqueous and organic phase streams for a precisely defined contact time (subsecond resolution) and then separates them for offline analysis. Experiments are reported examining the effect of contact time on extraction. We focus on three REEs: one ‘light’ (Nd), one ‘mid’ (Dy), and one ‘heavy’ (Yb) REE, which are extracted using Cyanex® 572. It appears that loading limits may be locally exceeded in the organic phase near to the liquid-liquid interface, where third phase deposits are observed. Third phase formation was also observed close to the liquid-liquid interface in two-dimensional confinement, showing similar third phase adsorption on glass plates. It is also shown that, under microfluidic flow, a typical first ‘split’ between heavy REEs and light REEs can be carried out without exceeding loading limits.INTRODUCTIONMicrofluidic solvent extraction has emerged as a useful tool for studying extraction of metals in a mineral processing context (Ciceri, Mason, Harvie, Perera, & Stevens, 2013; Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2011; Kriel et al., 2015; Mason, Ciceri, Harvie, Perera, & Stevens, 2013; Priest, Zhou, Klink, Sedev, & Ralston, 2012; Priest et al., 2011). The main advantages are the extremely well-defined and tunable flow behaviour, large surface-to-volume ratios, short contact times, and minimisation of sample and reagent amounts. Two main flow configurations have been studied to date: droplet-based and co-flowing streambased extraction. In the former, droplets are formed at a microchannel junction (usually a T-junction or flow-focusing junction) and flow downstream as plugs or ‘free’ droplets. In our case, stream-based extraction, the chip is a plate (often glass) with embedded microchannels (i.e. with cross-sections of tens of micrometres) that carry the aqueous and organic phases in contact without forming droplets. Thus, these chips play the role of a mixer in a conventional mixer-settler and phase separation takes place by branching the streams or collection in a vessel at the chip outlet. Stream-based extraction requires stable streams that are usually supported by a particular channel geometry (e.g. guide structure or small ‘pillars’) or surface chemistry, and flow parallel bounded by the liquid-liquid interface(Aota, Nonaka, Hibara, & Kitamori, 2006; Hibara et al., 2005; Hibara et al., 2002). Phases are disengaged downstream at a Y-junction, which is a qualitative difference between microfluidic and bulk extractions."

"Milling circuits play an important role in achieving the desired product; tonnage, size distribution and properties, since they are directly linked to the comminution energy consumption for the whole process. A grinding model with a mathematical simulation was developed for an open milling circuit with a scalped feed from a hydro-cyclone. The circuit was optimized by determining the optimal conditions in terms of energy consumption which would produce a floatable product having a desired size range (i.e. -75 +9 µm) for a platinum-bearing ore. The simulation results showed an operating region comprising the best combination of the ball filling and mill speed to achieve the highest production of a floatable size class, with the minimum energy consumption.INTRODUCTIONBall milling is usually conducted in closed circuits in order to achieve a desired product size without material overgrinding. The technological importance of optimising milling circuits cannot be overemphasised (Toneva and Peukert, 2007). Previous work has brought significant insights into the benefits of modelling milling circuits (Austin et al., 1984; King, 2012; Toneva and Peukert, 2007). However, the ability to model these circuits is dependent on the performance of the classifiers and the fidelity of the grinding mill model used compared to the actual circuit (Toneva and Peukert, 2007). Austin et al. (1984) identified five types of milling circuits as shown in Figure 1 namely; the grinding circuits employing mill in an open circuit, normal closed circuit, reverse closed circuit, open circuit with scalped feed, and, the combined closed circuit. Depending on the presence of the first classifier, the second, or both as well as their corresponding loops (streams), the combined circuit (e) can reduce to; an open (d), a normal closed (b), an open circuit with scalped feed (c) or a reverse closed circuit (a). In the case of an open circuit, the mill is operated without being directly influenced by a classifier. The normal closed circuit does not have the first classifier and therefore the make-up feed is the actual feed stream. Conversely, the reverse closed circuit keeps only the first classifier. The open circuited with scalped feed has only the first classifier but does not have the second one. The overflow stream from the classifier is mixed with the mill product to form the final product for the downstream process."

Cobalt occurs together with copper in the southern African copper belt, and a large portion of this cobalt ends up in copper smelting slags, mostly dissolved in oxide form. It is possible to achieve high recoveries of cobalt by reductive smelting of the copper slags, using some form of carbon as a reducing agent in an electric furnace. For example, a 40 MW DC arc furnace was operated at Chambishi Metals in Zambia from 2001 to 2008, and demonstrated cobalt recoveries of around 80% from slag to an iron-rich alloy containing copper and cobalt. The alloy was atomized prior to leaching. With the recent increase in demand for cobalt (and the resulting high metal prices), there has been increasing interest in this process route. There is also an alternative hydrometallurgical process for recovering the valuable metals from the slag. The choice between these process options requires a trade-off between capital and operating cost and environmental acceptability. This paper examines the potential for cobalt recovery from slags, and outlines various process options. INTRODUCTION Cobalt has had a number of important uses in society since antiquity, and its principal use has changed dramatically over time. Since at least 2250 BC, cobalt-based pigments (cobalt blue) have been widely used to colour manufactured goods such as glass and pottery. Later, cobalt became known for its magnetic and wear-resistant properties and high-strength alloys, and most of the cobalt produced was consumed in the production of cobalt-based superalloys. The greatest recent growth in cobalt demand is due to it being essential to the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in consumer electronic devices and increasingly to drive electric vehicles. Cobalt is usually produced as a by-product of copper or nickel. The copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia supplies most of the world's cobalt production. In 2018, the DRC was expected to produce 90 000 tons of the world total of 140 000 tons of cobalt (Shedd, 2019). This paper focuses on the southern African copper industry, and specifically the cobalt that is able to be produced as a co-product from this. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN COPPER SMELTING Copper deposits in South Africa have been documented since at least 1685, when the Cape governor, Simon van der Stel, ‘discovered’ the 'Copper Mountain' at Springbok. South Africa's first public commercial mining company (imaginatively called the 'South African Mining Company') was established in Cape Town in 1846, to exploit the rich copper resources that were believed to exist in Namaqualand.

We have developed a 76Cu-3Si-21Zn alloy "ECOBRASS®" containing no lead. When 3% Si is added to a 78Cu-22Zn alloy, kappa and gamma phases participate uniformly in the alpha matrix. When being machined, stress concentrates on these hard phases, namely kappa and gamma, and thereby lowering the required cutting force and yielding segmentalized chips without lubricant. Kappa and gamma phases transform into beta phase under high temperature, which makes it easier to extrude and/or forge the alloy. When 0.08% P and 50 ppm Zr are co-added, the grains of ECOBRASS® castings are refined significantly to become as small as several dozens of micrometers. The grain refinement by the co-addition of P and Zr improves castability, tensile strength and elongation of ECOBRASS® castings. Meanwhile, the lead leachate from an ECOBRASS® water meter, field-tested in pH 6.8 drinking water for one year, was less than 5 ppb without correction. No indication of dezincification corrosion was observed, either. ECOBRASS® is equally suitable for rods, forgings and castings, and makes it possible to produce a complete set of plumbing parts (valves, faucets, etc.) by its own. This way, not only improving recyclability, ECOBRASS® also realizes size and weight reduction due to its good corrosion resistance and high strength.

"Inco has shifted part of its traditional extractive research effort at its J..Roy Gordon Research Laboratory in Mississauga toward new, value-added products. Most of the effort is being expended on new Ni powders for batteries and new Ni-coated products which will be produced in Inco's carbonyl nickel refineries. New products under development are Ni-coated powders, Ni-coated fibres and ultra-fine Ni powders. Other new products for advanced material applications include controlled expansion composites, NiGOLD strip, Thermal barrier coatings on Inco alloys, and plasma coatings.Research and Corporate Strategic ThrustsThe newest strategic thru st of the company is to increase the value of the primary metal products. These new products are to be in addition to any new alloys or downstream alloy fabrication.Historically Inco has had the highest research expenditures in the extractive metallurgy field in North America. This has resulted in many new processes including flash smelting , matte separation, fluid bed roasting, pressure carbonyl refining and cobalt electrowinning which have contributed to establishing Inco as the lowest cost nickel producer. The recession of the 1980s caused a restructuring of Inco research and corporate goals .As shown in Figure I, from 1975-1982, i.e. pre-recession, Inco spent around 33 million dollars per year on research. Some 48070 of that sum was spent in Corporate Laboratories in Sterling Forest in the United States and in the United Kingdom , mostly on alloy associated research. A further 10% was spent on alloy research at the alloy production facilities in Hunting- ton, West Virginia, and Birmingham and Hereford in the United Kingdom. On extractive research, 13% was spent by process technology groups at the plant s, 20% at the pilot plants in Port Colborne and 9% at the J. Roy Gordon Research laboratory.The relative research expenditures (Fig. 2) have decreased so that today they are at the same level as 1975-80. The research as a per cent of sales has been cut from 2.2% to 1.2% of normalized sales. A normalized sale price of $4.00/lb Ni was used in the 1988 figures. This was partly achieved by closing Corporate Laboratories. Most of the essential alloy research was moved to producing plants and total alloy research is now 27%.A new thrust initiated in the 80s was mining research which now accounts for 20% of research expenditures. Over a period of the past five years this research has doubled the mining productivity in Inco. The pilot plant expenditures have been cut in half. One entire research station at Port Colborne was converted into a platinum group metals intermediate refinery. The decrease in pilot plant expenditures has been compensated by full scale plant trials devoted to the S02 abatement program at Sudbury."

"In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and as such they perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is ineffective in recovering very fine ( <15 µm) or flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the: preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 µm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm3 ), especially from coarser gangue. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this presentation is to describe the mode of operation of two Canadian centrifugal concentrators, the Knelson and Falcon. It is hoped that it will prove informative to prospective users in the selection, testing and optimization for applications of either machine. The work is based on testwork both in Canadian mills and at McGill. I am indebted to many colleagues at these locations. Appropriate references will be made to articles further describing the work, either already in the open literature or in preparation.Although this work is meant to be more practical than scholarly, it is appropriate to begin by considering how the two units achieve selective recovery. This will become useful in establishing a suitable testing methodology, which will then be described, and interpreting typical results. In the last section I will attempt to define appropriate applications for the two units. This is a thankless task, as I am likely to miss some applications or to make projections based on partial results, as much of the work is still in progress. In deference to the reader and both manufacturers, areas where reasonable doubt still remains will be identified."

Abstract - BHP Minerals discovered the Archean lode gold ULU deposit on the western margin of the High Lake Volcanic Belt in 1989. The greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks on the property are folded into a 5 km-long anticline. There is a close spatial association of Au-As zones to the trace of this F2 ULU anticline. The largest of these auriferous zones, the Flood zone, is localized at the core of the fold. The southeast-trending Flood zone consists of several anastomosing lenses that have been traced for 435 m on surface. Overall, it dips steeply (70° to 80°) to the southwest and has been intersected to depths below 600 m. The hosting high-iron tholeitic basalt displays a lower amphibolite mineral assemblage of ferrohornblende + plagioclase + ilmenite with accessory quartz and epidote. Alteration minerals include biotite, chlorite, hornblende, actinolite-tremolite, and potassium feldspar (microcline) with minor calcite, epidote, tourmaline, and titanite. The highest gold values occur where brecciated basaltic wall-rock clasts are replaced by acicular arsenopyrite + quartz + K-feldspar. BHP Minerals completed 54,783 m of both exploration and resource development drilling before selling the ULU property to Echo Bay Mines in 1995. Development of ULU as a satellite deposit to Echo Bay’s Lupin mine began in 1996. A -15% ramp was extended to the 155-meter level, and 16,011 m of underground drilling were completed before the decline in gold prices forced a suspension of activities at ULU in August 1997. The current owners, Wolfden Resources Inc., drilled 18,569 m in 2004 to increase confidence in the resource blocks. Following this drill program, a revised resource calculated by an independent consultant determined that the ULU deposit contains an inferred/indicated mineral resource of 1,130,000 t grading 11.34 g/t gold (373,748 oz) to the 360-m level. The portal was re-opened in 2005 and a prefeasibility study is underway.

"Hudson Resources Inc. (Hudson) has defined a major resource of high purity anorthosite (calcium feldspar) assaying about 30% Al2O3 at the White Mountain (Naajat) deposit in Western Greenland. Extensive beneficiation and evaluation testwork has shown that the material can be simply beneficiated to produce a feed material ideal for the production of low-alkali E-glass used for making glass fibre. An offtake agreement is in place with a major US fibreglass manufacturer and, subject to the mine construction schedule, shipments are scheduled for late 2016 or early 2017. In parallel with the E-glass program, Hudson has completed an initial program of metallurgical testwork which shows that the White Mountain anorthosite can be processed by hydro- and pyro-metallurgical processes to yield either smelter-grade alumina (SGA), suitable for conversion to aluminium metal, or a high purity, chemical/specialty-grade alpha-alumina (CGA) commanding a premium price. The process includes dissolution of the anorthosite in hydrochloric acid, HCl sparging to precipitate aluminium chloride hexahydrate (ACH), recycle of the ACH filtrate to leaching with a bleed stream processed for HCl regeneration from CaCl2, and two-stage calcination of the ACH to regenerate HCl and produce SGA and/or CGA. Calcium silicate and amorphous silica are marketable by-products. This paper discusses the White Mountain anorthosite deposit; the process testwork completed to develop production processes for SGA and CGA; production plans, and indicative economics.INTRODUCTIONHudson Resources Inc. (Hudson) holds a 100% interest in the Naajat Exploitation Licence in Western Greenland that cover the White Mountain high-calcic anorthosite deposit. Anorthosite is a calcium aluminosilicate of slightly variable composition but generally containing about 30% Al2O3. The alumina content is similar to that in bauxite and anorthosite has long been studied as a feedstock for the production of alumina. Other potential uses include feedstock for the high-end fiberglass (E-glass) industry and as a filler for use in paint and plastics."

"INTRODUCTIONI have been asked to make available our method of determining the ""Live Inventory"" within a gravity type thickener. The ""Live Inventory"" being that tonnage compatible with the optimum underflow density that satisfies the process requirements.One prerequisite of the calculations is the proper determination of the final pumpable underflow density. A further requirement is that, prior to shutdown, the thickener has been operated properly, particularly that it has not been operated for storage capacity.Until recently I had few chances to check the method. However, I was most fortunate to have had a recent opportunity covering several months on a 300 ft diameter thickener at a plant in the U.S.A., wherein the method was tested and verified many times. The method proved accurate in that our calculated tonnage checked with the actual dried physical inventory of the drying facility.At the precise moment that the feed to the thickener was shut down, a per cent solid determination was made at the critical place and the tonnage in ""Live Inventory"" determined. Let us say that at the moment the thickener U&apos; Flow solids was 20%. The thickener then was allowed to cperate until the U&apos; Flow solids dropped below 20%, at which time the thickener was deemed to be relieved. Anything much less than 20% was not suitable to the subsequent centrifuge operation.Most large metallurgical thickeners have a configuration of three slopes at the thickener ""bed"". These slopes are dictated by the raking blades and are shown on the manufacturers&apos; erection drawings. The first slope is from the outer periphery and generally takes up a distance of about 60% of the radius, the second slope generally taking up the remaining 40%. Within this 40% area, there is usually another slope taken up by the cone on ""B"" type thickeners or an actual steeper inner slope on ""C"" type thickeners."

"Tumbler Ridge, Canada&apos;s newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town&apos;s ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

"The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition f or new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps, Saskatchewan. The findings suggest that such initiatives could result in substantial excess capacity and the dissipation of monopoly rents. In summary, given the market structure of the industry, it is unlikely that the employment and economic effects associated with industry expansion will offset the loss in national welfare attributable to rent dissipation.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to discuss the potential impact of inter-provincial competition for new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. The ramifications of such competition are potentially severe: given that the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which we purportedly possess a significant degree of market power(1), it is important that sound supply management practices are followed. "Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. "The Santa Rita mine is located in north eastern part of Bahia in Brazil and is owned and operated by Mirabela Mineração do Brasil Ltda. Typical SABC circuit was designed as the preferred option for the 4.0 mtpa (500tph) to produce a P80 of 125um for flotation. Although the SAG was originally designed to operate with conventional radial pulp lifters, later it was fitted with Outotec’s Turbo Pulp Lifters – TPL (Latchireddi, 2005). The milling circuit commenced commissioning on the 24th of October 2009 and the milling circuit achieved the nameplate capacity within days. with small and relatively simple measures to rectify. Since commissioning, the SAG mill has been working in fully autogenous grinding (FAG) mode with no balls (in contrast to the estimated 10% ball charge) and has been consistently treated up to 650tph.This paper examines the comminution design process, the operating philosophies, start-up experiences, post commissioning optimization and future development works. Open pit optimization forms the basis of mine design, production planning and construction of mine facilities. The negative effects of this phase may include substantial reductions in ore recoveries, relocation of waste dumps and surface infrastructure, extraction of unwanted waste, with a cumulative effect on mine value reductions. As a result, this area has received significant research focus using linear and dynamic programming, heuristic, genetic and stimulation algorithms and the graph theory. These algorithms are derived from rigorous mathematical models, but they are built on the assumption that all the periodic production capacities are extracted at the time of analysis. This assumption weakens the models because mining occurs over significant time period. In order to develop a comprehensive model that accounts for the timing of material extraction, the current models, which are built on the economic block value (EBV) concept, must be modified to account for time. In this paper, the authors develop a model of the optimization problem using the 2-D Lerchs-Grossmann?s optimization algorithm. This model is used to investigate the effect of periodic discounting on the optimal pit layout design by designing an integrated pit optimiser (IPO) that incorporates ?production scheduling?. IPO uses the ensuing discounted economic block value (DEBV) as a basis for the pit optimisation process. The time-dependent model is compared with a time-independent model. The results show that discounting has no effect on the optimal pit contour although the reported pit value is overstated if the EBVs are used instead of the DEBV. The authors, however, believe that this conclusion may not be general and could have been influenced by the nature of ore body geometry and the proposed mining strategy.

The “Mill Redesign Project” was completed on time, under budget and delivered the promised improvement in recoveries.This paper describes the methodology of the Mill Redesign Project team, details of the process improvements and the critical success factors that helped the team deliver on its promises.With a payback of under one year, the Mill Redesign Project will play a key role in ensuring a competitive edge as Inco embarks on its second century of operation. IntroductionIt is not uncommon in milling operations to encounter a crisis. That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. Flowsheet and process changes are attempted and abandoned. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. Regardless, the metallurgist can sit back and bask in the apparent success of his or her endeavours.Less common is when a problem is carefully diagnosed, a team put together to explore all avenues and recommend a path of action that is implemented on time, on budget and immediately delivers on the promises which are sustained over time. Abstract - Cu-Ni-PGE footwall ore deposits were studied in the McCreedy East and Whistle mines along the North Range, and the Lindsley and Little Stobie mines along the South Range of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The footwall ores in these localities differ from typical magmatic Fe-Ni-Cu- PGE deposits in the Sudbury mining camp: they have higher Cu/Ni ratios, higher PGE content, veinlike appearance and ubiquitous association of ore with hydrous silicates. Results of comparative fluid inclusion petrography and microthermometry of footwall ores indicate that high temperatures (300°C to 480°C) and heavy-metal rich saline (up to about 40 NaCl equivalent wt% salinity) fluids were associated with the formation of the PGE-rich footwall ores at moderately high pressures (around 2 kbars). However, several, possibly independent fluid circulation stages were also found at the different localities and there also are differences in detailed characteristics for ore-forming fluids especially comparing data from the North Range and the South Range. Thus, in addition to the high temperature and salinity of fluids, there are local variations in the nature of hydrothermal processes. These differences may be related to the diverse origin of fluids (magmatic, metamorphic, and formational brines) and their differing extents of interaction with the compositionally different footwall lithologies.

The various microstructural factors that influence the creep resistance of y-titanium aluminides are presented and discussed. Titanium aluminides have potential for a variety of intermediate temperature applications in both gas turbine and reciprocating engines. While it is well established that the &apos;fully lamellar&apos; titanium aluminide microstructure offers superior creep properties, the particular influence of lamellar morphology, third phase precipitation, and grain boundary structure in controlling both the primary and tertiary creep behaviour is presented. The results are primarily based on tensile creep experiments undertaken using several titanium aluminide intermetallic compositions processed via powder metallurgical techniques, investment casting and Bridgman directional solidification. The results indicate that lamellar structure and precipitate formation have a major impact on primary creep, while microstructural degradation through both lamellar and precipitate coarsening influence on the onset of tertiary creep leading to fracture. The results are used to design a creep resistant microstructure produced by directional solidification and the effectiveness of this designed microstructure is demonstrated through 10,000 hour creep tests.
