One fundamental requirement for surface and underground rock engineering is the ability to characterise the rock mass. An accurate characterisation of the rock mass allows rock engineers to optimize designs safely and economically. A number of classification systems have been developed in the past 50 years to help characterise rock masses such as RMR, Q system, Rmi, and several others. The challenge in developing rock characterisation schemes is often practicality, i.e. creating systems with relatively simple inputs for the everyday practitioner. A second challenge is the degree of subjectivity often inherent in commonly used classification systems. These challenges are especially exacerbated in weak rock or densely jointed rock masses. This paper introduces a new approach to characterise densely jointed rock mass using artificial neural networks and principal component analysis, based on principles commonly used in the geotechnical engineering of rock fills and waste rock dumps. Thirteen input parameters are dimensionally compressed using principal component analysis. Using a global database with more than 100 case histories, an artificial neural network is developed to conduct the rock mass characterisation. The advantage of this approach is less subjectivity as commonly used engineering (quantitative) terms are put to use. A further advantage is that given that the method is site-data dependent, it allows for ‘fine tuning’ of the model for a specific site.

This paper discusses the short bed ion exchange technique for the removal of metal contaminants from copper electrolyte bleed streams. Processes for the selective removal of sulfuric acid, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, and iron will be discussed. A case study outlining the performance history of a short bed system for sulfuric acid removal followed by a two stage selective precipitation system producing a nickel carbonate by¬product at the Phelps Dodge Mining Company El Paso operation will be presented.

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Data are presented on the extractant behaviour on toxic metal removal from spent hydroprocessing catalyst, produced at the North Atlantic Refinery plant in Newfoundland and Labrador. Aliquat 336 was selected due to its potential capabilities for the separation of cobalt, molybdenum and nickel from the leachate extractant produced by aqua regia. The solvent extraction process was statistically modeled using central composite design (CCD), and the numerical optimization was conducted to achieve the optimum point for toxic metal recovery for the extractant.

This paper describes the advantages/disadvantages of electron beam freeforming using two different types of filler metal: (1) brazing paste and (2) solid wire. Sound buildups were obtained from both filler metal. The freeforms produced with the brazing paste showed a certain level of porosity, which was reduced by successive melting. In comparison, the solid wire buildup was practically free of pore. When compared with the solid wire filler, the brazing paste produced narrower buildups but a larger scattering of the width.

In this paper, three novel surfactants containing double reactive centers(-CONHOH and –CONH-), double hydrophobic groups were designed and synthesized as collector for separation of diaspore and aluminosilicate minerals, such as N-(4-(hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutyl)octanamide (HA-8), N-(4-(hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutyl)decanamide (HA-10) and N-(4-(hydroxyamino)- 4-oxobutyl) -dodecanamide (HA-12). The adsorption mechanism of N-(4-(hydroxyamino) -4-oxobutyl)alkylamides (HA) onto diaspore was also investigated by FTIR spectra, zeta potential measurement and DFT. The flotation results demonstrated that three collectors all exhibited superior collecting power to diaspore and selectivity against kaolinite and illite, and could effectively realize flotation recovery of diaspore from bauxite ores contained aluminosilicate minerals under neutral conditions. Moreover, HA-12 was a superior collector than other two collectors for bauxite separation. The results of XPS, FTIR spectra and zeta potential illustrated that at around pH 6.0, HA might chemisorb on diaspore surfaces through Al-O coordination bonds formed by binding its –C(=O)NHOH or –C(=O)NH– chelate groups with aluminum atoms on diaspore surfaces. HA’s unique properties, such as characteristic bond patterns onto diaspore surfaces, double hydrophobic groups, and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between neighboring HA molecules coated on diaspore surfaces, rendered it to be a superior flotation collector for diaspore.

Copper sulfide is the main mining resources in Chile, and most of this metal is obtained via pyrometallurgical extraction in seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country. In 2002, 1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper were produced, with a notorious environmental impact due to the large amount of slag generated, including transportation and disposing problems. Therefore, there is a great interest in finding alternative uses in order to give additional value to the slag. This is a total project development concept, which consider residues as new resources where new components could be obtained, improving sustainability in mining activities and also ensuring clean production processes. Thus, the present work shows a review of copper slag characterization as well as several ways of utilization, including compact material for road and railway installation, part of admixtures in concrete.

"The process of arriving at the size and grade of· (a) a newly discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors' experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings ""The Four Cs"". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process. IntroductionThe key issue of ore reserves is that they are intended as, a clear-as- possible statement of metal in place in a mineable orebody. Precise, widely understood definitions help convey understanding of the figures, but accuracy requires careful geological input before the calculation is made and a definition is applied. Many recent new mining operations in Canada have experienced serious shortcomings between original ore reserve figures and what was mined. This suggests deficiencies in the actual tonnage and grade calculated in advance of production. The authors suspect that much of the problem is due to a less-than-adequate outline of the orebody before calculating reserves for production or alternatively, treatment of grade and thickness data without regard to an orebody outline. Careful consideration of mineralization and ore continuity is one of the most important aspects of ore geology. Ore reserve calculation should be more than a mathematical exercise."

Supported gold catalysts were prepared by Direct Anionic Exchange on an alumina support and tested during the reaction of CO oxidation and of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (C1 to C3). The catalysts showed high activies over a range of concentrations and temperatures compatible with an application to automotive exhaust cleaning. Furthermore, a complete resistance to thermal ageing at 600°C in the absence or presence of water was observed due to the obtention of strongly anchored nanosized gold particles during the preparation step.

It deals mainly with the long tailing and concentrate lines. This paper describes the slurry pumping practices in the mills of the Ontario Division.The PumpsWe have in our Sudbury area mills most of the available types of slurry pumps, in sizes from one inch up to twelve inches, a total of about 400 pumps. The rubber-lined, horizontal shaft pump is; most numerous. However, for certain applications, the hard-metal pump is essential, and is becoming more popular for general mill service. Two types of vertical shaft pumps are used. There are a few diaphragm pumps on small thickeners, but the larger thickeners have centrifugal pumps either directly connected to the under-flow or with one pump handling several gravity underflows. We have not used piston or plunger pumps in our mills."

"Chalcedonite is an unique rock due to the relatively small area of its occurrence. It also possesses multi-raw-material features therefore it should be given a special protection aiming at its complete and optimal utilization. It is the natural sedimentary rock and the only mine in Poland, located in Inowlodz, where the opencast mining from “Teofilow” deposit is carried out.Chalcedonite mainly consists of cryptocrystalline and microcrystalline chalcedony together with small amounts of autogenous and detrital quartz. The chalcedony itself is a fairy common mineral and many forms of its occurrence is known, some of them are semi-precious minerals. Among the most popular ones following can be found: agate, bloodstone, onyx, carnelian, chrysoprase. Many countries own chalcedony deposits: Australia, Brazil, India, Canada, Namibia Russia, South Africa. However chalcedony in its pure form does not occur in the mentioned chalcedonite rock. The pores, which take usually from 5% to 25% of volume and have sizes smaller than 0.5 mm, are the characteristic feature of all chalcedonite forms. The paper presents some crucial problems of its processing together with most significant directions of its applications. New method of chalcedonite enrichment based on densimetric separation (patented in Poland) is presented. Results of investigation show that the obtained products can increase quality of concrete and filter grits."

High Definition Scanning (laser scanning) is a proven technology that is accurate to within 6mm in 50m (¼? in 150?). It can capture in excess of one million 3D point measurements in an average 2 hour scan. It has numerous applications including brown-field retrofits, bridge measurement and analysis, verifying as-built conditions, and crime scene investigation. We most commonly use it for plant design to capture current site conditions, so as to prevent interferences and problems before construction begins. All vital information is captured in the first site visit, which limits the need for extra field trips.

"This paper examines the application of blasthole sloping to narrow vein mining in Canada, for ore deposits where widths are less than two metres. While the technique has now been utilized for more than ten years, it remains in the experimental stage and on-site testing is necessary for its adoption at new mining operations or in differ¬ent geological settings. It is intrinsically a safer method than other narrow vein methods in current use.The investigation describes the main operating parameters for mines recently surveyed. The criteria for method applicability are defined and the problems encountered are studied. It is concluded that blasthole sloping for narrow vein mining is a viable modern method which promises to gain popularity and that emerging fragmentation technology and blasting research can be used to further increase applicability of the stoping method."

Dispatch systems have been used for open pit mining since the early 1980?s but similar systems do not widely exist for underground mining. There is a need for developing dispatch systems for underground mines, particularly highly automated operations such as block caving. An innovative method, Agent Based Modeling (ABM) for a dispatch system for a block caving operation, is proposed in this paper. The model is based on a particular behaviour observed in social insects. The focus of the ABM dispatch system is adaptability with respect to changing operational conditions and effective integration of maintenance modules with the operation. The paper will show the advantages of this innovative method compared to existing similar systems.
