Many factors affect the forge ability of steels. One of the major factors is chemical composition.' This article discusses the individual effects of alloying elements and the effect of the resultant modification of microstructure onforgeability. INTRODUCTION T HE use of alloy steels is expanding considerably and the fabrication procedures for such alloys are becoming more complex. An attempt is made in this article to describe the effect of alloying elements on the hot-workability of steels. Most of the data reported here are taken from the studies of Ihrig, Clark and others (Refs. 1-4). Chemical composition is not the only controlling factor. Grain size and surface condition of the material, forging temperature, and speed of deformation are also important. Certain conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of various alloying elements on the hot-work-ability of forging stock. The results of hot-twist tests are considered useful in this connection as the number of twists to failure has been taken as the level of forgeability at a particular temperature. From the characteristics of the new (1976) electronic components and units that are being marketed, the author has tried to foresee the types and the performances of the near-future slope-monitoring equipment. Much-improved sensors, instruments and systems for pit use can now be developed - sun-powered telemetry remote stations are feasible, very sensitive as well as precise and drift-free liquid level inclinometers will be available, new techniques for distance measurement with lasers obviate the need for atmospheric corrections and the latest generation of desktop calculators have become easily programmed minicomputers. Thus, it is realistic to assume that fully automatic pit-slope monitoring systems will be operational in the foreseeable future.

"Activated carbon is used to recover gold in solution from various gold circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes; however, the characteristics and durability of the activated carbon can vary. Handling this medium poses challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuit discharge. Additionally, adsorbed gold on carbon fines can be lost to the discharge. The studies in this paper aim to standardize laboratory methods for testing activated carbon qualities specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, platelet content, wet attrition resistance, gold kinetics, and gold loading. L’étude portait sur la composition granulométrique, la teneur des plaquettes, la résistance au frottement humide, la cinétique de l’or et l’adsorption de l’or, à savoir la capacité du charbon actif à adsorber l’or sur une période spécifique. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on reducing gold loss to tailings. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes. Granular activated carbon (Figure 1) is widely used for gold extraction from slurries containing gold-cyanide complexes. This activated carbon—produced from charred coconut shells—is well suited because of its adsorption kinetics, gold-loading capacity, attrition resistance, and ability to be reactivated. The extraction process using activated carbon technology involves adsorbing gold from an aqueous leachate; the gold is dissolved using a cyanide salt and consequently a dicyanoaurate(I) ion (Au(CN)2–) is formed, as noted in equation 1."

"The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of southeastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). This pegmatite body was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from, its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANGO) in 1967 and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco is currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Beryl co Inc. of Boston, and the Province of Manitoba. (Williams and others 1978, Burt 1979, Burt and others 1982), continued until the end of 1982, when, due to falling demand and prices, operations were suspended.During the 1970's Tanco had investigated the potential of the lithium orebody; carrying our research into both the concentration of the ore and into the production of lithium chemicals. However lithium chemicals were in an over-supply situation, due in part to the production from Chilean brine deposits (Buckley, 1983), and Tanco' s own plans were put into abeyance. The potential alternative market, the direct use of concentrates in the glass and ceramics industry, did not at the time justify the cost of constructing a new plant."

"During the period 1958-1980 seven deep shafts were sunk from the surface in the UK. From 1977 until 1989 sixteen deep shafts were sunk in the UK, all concrete lined. Subsequently from 1989 up to the present day no deep shafts have been sunk in the UK, a period of 30 years. Developments in the design and construction of deep shaft linings in the UK therefore were predominantly carried out throughout the period 1977–1989. This knowledge is recorded in several published papers by the author over that period which will be referred to in the paper. INTRODUCTION The paper includes a review of past precedent for the design of deep shaft concrete linings in the UK and sets out the principles for future designs, including the design load to be adopted and Factors of Safety (SFs) to be used in the design. Hydrostatic pressure increases with depth from the surface and therefore the concrete lining must increase in thickness and strength throughout its depth to resist the pressure. High strength concrete mixes were developed to enable economic linings to reach greater depths and these will be detailed. The ground conditions to sink through in the UK consist of predominantly competent (self-standing when excavated) rock, which can be water bearing, and hence a hydrostatic pressure resisting lining is required. The paper describes the construction measures needed to produce a dry shaft by way of pour length, joint detail, backwall grouting and joint sealing details. PAST PRECEDENT FOR UK DEEP SHAFT SINKING AND LINING Seven deep shafts were sunk from the surface in the UK from 1957–1977 over a 20-year period (Auld, 1987). These are listed in Table 1. Three shafts were for British Coal, two were for Cleveland Potash Ltd and two were for the Central Electricity Generating Board. The British Coal shafts were 5.486 m and 7.315 m internal diameter to depths of 550 m and 780 m, respectively. At 5.5 m internal diameter and a depth of 1150 m, the two Boulby Mine shafts for Cleveland Potash Ltd are currently the deepest shafts in the UK. The two Central Electricity Generating Board shafts of 5 m and 10 m internal diameter, to depths of 255 m and 440 m, respectively, were ventilation shafts for a pumped storage scheme. Six of the shafts were sunk by Thyssen (GB) Ltd and one by Cementation Mining Ltd."

"IntroductionThe published information concerning treatment of uranium ores has been very limited as far as Canadian ores are concerned. Such information has dealt mainly with refining processes for concentrates or rich ores, designed to recover radium rather than uranium; these methods could not be economically applied to low-grade ores.The purpose of this paper is to describe treatment possibilities for some of the .ores that have been treated at the Mines Branch, and .to show how the character of these ores influences methods and results.What is a Uranium Ore?Prospecting for uranium has been extremely active during the past two years and a great many occurrences of radioactive minerals have been recorded. Such prospecting has been based to a large extent on the use of the Geiger counter in the fie1d. This equipment is an invaluable aid when the results are properly interpreted.Most definitely, indications of high radioactivity do not always prove the presence of a valuable orebody. First we have to determine:(1) Is the radioactivity due to uranium or to thorium. There is no immediate market for thorium.(2) Can the uranium in the ore be economically recovered.Chemical analysis is the most exact method of determining uranium content, but a fair estimate of the uranium, and also of the thorium, content can be made from the difference in gamma and beta activity. The Mines Branch guards against misinterpretation by determining both beta and gamma activities and, if more than a minor amount of thorium is indicated, then a Chemical analysis is made."

"The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig is a gravity separation device which utilizes the principles of the conventional mineral jigs but with the additional feature of being able to vary the apparent gravitational field. This is accomplished by utilizing the specific induced movements of the conventional jig within a centrifuge.Pilot plant trials have been underway since July 1988 to evaluate the potential applicability of this technology to various process streams at Rio Kemptville Tin.The grade/recovery relationships for samples treated in the jig were consistently better than results obtained from tables. Recoveries of more than 90% were attained at concentrating factors ranging up to 20. When compared with electrostatic separators, the jig achieved equivalent metallurgical results in a two stage process, without the expensive requirement of filtration and drying. Recoveries exceeding 96% were achieved with final concentrate grades averaging higher than 60% tin.INTRODUCTIONMineral jigs have been used for hundreds of years. Many different types have been developed, and each one has numerous variations. In recent years, the idea of applying centrifugal forces to conventional jigs has been put to practical tests and today a number of units are in commercial production. In principle, by enhancing the apparent gravitational field, it should be possible to recover finer particles by overcoming viscosity and surface effects which tend to limit existing gravity devices. In addition, it may be possible to use gravity to separate minerals with much smaller specific gravity differences."

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. THE Ontario Refining Company, Limited, wholly-owned subsidiary of The International Nickel Company of Canada, refines the entire blister copper output of the latter's Copper Cliff smelter. Prior to 1936, the blister was cast in 460-lb. cakes at the smelter, loaded on open cars, and transported by rail to the refinery, a distance of approximately 1 1/4 miles. Here the cakes were transferred to the plant narrow-gauge system, charged to furnaces, and re-melted. This procedure necessitated the operation of holding furnaces and casting machines at the smelter -extensive re-handling-and melting down of a cold charge at the refinery. Transfer of the copper in molten form direct from converters to anode furnaces promised a considerable reduction in costs, and this possibility was investigated. As a result, a portable holding furnace, or hot-metal car, was designed and constructed. It was placed in operation in July, 1936, to be followed a year later by three additional units of slightly modified design. Figure 1 shows the original car, and Figure 2 the lacer type. With four cars in service, operations were placed on an all 'hot-metal' basis.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans released copper from -400-mesh chalcopyrite at a rate of 54 mg/I/hr. Any flotation chemicals remaining on the concentrate did not inhibit the leach rate. Zinc rougher tailings were also leachable. With bacteria, 75 per cent of the zinc and 68 per cent of the copper came into solution. In the sterile controls, only 16 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the copper were released; 100 per cent of the copper and 36 per cent of the zinc were leached from pyrite cinders through the action of bacteria, and 17 per cent of the copper and 10 per cent of the zinc were solubilized in the sterile controls. Less than 0.027 per cent of ~he iron came into solution. The majority of the copper in a converter slag was acid-soluble, but a reverberatory slag responded to microbiological leaching. About 62 per cent of the copper came into solution, compared to 12 per cent in the sterile control. The various factors influencing the rate and extent of microbiological leaching are discussed.

"Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, northern Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that processes a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. Mine production began in 2014 and is expected to achieve production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year. The ore is trucked to the Humboldt Mill, where both a Ni and Cu concentrate is produced.XPS Consulting & Testwork Services (XPS) has assisted the team at Eagle since 2013. Prior to start up, the ore was piloted at the XPS lab in Sudbury, Ontario to demonstrate the concentrator flowsheet and establish flotation operating strategy. XPS consulting metallurgists worked closely with the Eagle team during the commissioning of the plant providing troubleshooting, sampling, metal balancing expertise and support. Finally, a series of monthly composites over a 6 month period was submitted for mineralogical characterization to assess plant performance, identify opportunities for improvement and to provide a baseline for the future operation.Lundin’s investment to test the ores ahead of mining and to team with XPS’s experienced mineral processing engineers to help commission the plant has led to the plant achieving concentrator production targets shortly after startup. The commitment to training and implementation of best practices, and a culture where ongoing testing is the norm, puts the Eagle Operation on sound footing for future operation.INTRODUCTIONLundin’s Eagle Mine is a subsidiary of Lundin Mining located in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 2 hours to the Humboldt mill.The ore is an ultramafic hosted high grade Cu Ni deposit and exists as either massive or semi massive sulphides. The high resource grade of Cu (2.49%) and Ni (2.93%) make this a valuable ore source. (Owen & Meyer, 2013) A metallurgical team was put together by Lundin to ensure the mill was designed and commissioned to optimize metallurgy in the shortest time from this valuable deposit. The commissioning plan targeted commercial production by Q1 2015."

This paper deals with the problem of caving, which occurs in varying degrees in blast holes before loading. It is shown that the distribution of the amount of caving in materials may be described by a gamma density function. A decision model to determine the optimal depth of over-drilling 'in order to minimize the expected additional cost per hole is described. Two different policies are discussed. In addition, charts which permit the mine operator to realize significant savings have been drawn for different actual situations.

ONLY IN THE Province of Saskatchewan is natural sodium sulphate found in Canada in amounts large enough to make recovery economically sound. Geologists have estimated that the numerous deposits within the Province contain upwards of 200 million tons of Glauber's salt. There are twenty-one deposits in the Province which contain 500,-000 or more tons and about two dozen with lesser amounts. The first recorded production of sodium sulphate in Saskatchewan was in 1918. The company concerned, and others that attempted to develop the industry in its early stages, were unsuccessful. Their failures were caused by two main factors -lack of knowledge of efficient operating methods and the unstable market situation for the finished product. Today, the situation is changed in both respects and the product, commonly referred to as 'saltcake", is a very important chemical requirement of many industries throughout the world. Before proceeding with remarks on manufacturing methods it should be stated that, although this is a general paper on the manufacturing methods and end uses of the saltcake produced in the Province, the writer is, of course, more familiar with the plants operated by Saskatchewan Minerals than with other operations and perhaps may be excused for dealing more particularly with the plants of that Compa11y.

"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Froth flotation is used to produce nickel and copper concentrates. As is the case at other operations, the presence of magnesium is detrimental to the flotation products. In the past year, the exploitation of a new deposit has increased magnesium in the feed. Thus, it has been challenging to meet the required ratio in the final nickel concentrate. In search for a consistent solution for this problematic, an empirical flotation simulator making use of selectivity curves was developed. The circuit was expressed as a system of linear equations, which considered the distribution of copper, nickel and gangue minerals in the different streams. The relative quantities of each mineral are given by the separation efficiency curves of the various banks in the circuit. Three sources of data were used to calibrate the simulator: historical plant data (metallurgical balance), infinite dilution bench-scale flotation tests, and direct sampling of flotation cells. The calibrated separation curves were used to predict the recovery of the different species based on a single mineral recovery. Validation of the simulator showed good fit for the valuable minerals. The simulator was then used to infer the optimal operating conditions of the flotation circuit to optimise magnesium oxide content of the nickel concentrate. Simulation of two re-arrangements of the circuit gave a promising solution with a Fe:MgO ratio 2.42 times higher than the minimum value.INTRODUCTION Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Drawing from the experience of nickel, copper, aluminum and mineral borates, this paper illustrates the business value that the mining, minerals and metals industry as a whole can gain from applying life cycle assessment (LCA) to products and operations. Through the use of case studies, the paper explores how companies and industry associations have used LCA to their advantage: from evaluating capital investments, meeting customer information needs, supporting new product applications, and developing credible marketing information on the environmental performance of their products. It also explores the dynamics of LCA adoption and integration within companies, and provides recommendations to further strengthen institutionalization of LCA.

"A hybrid methodology is proposed to improve the accuracy of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) concentrations simulated in a ventilation network model by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). DPM, as a primary concern for underground hard-rock mines, has been studied in two dominant numerical models, ventilation network solvers and computational fluid dynamics. Ventilation network solvers are efficient, but they are not able to provide three-dimensional DPM concentration contours and only accept area-average DPM data as input. CFD simulations are time-consuming, but generating DPM concentration results with high accuracy. Besides, both monitoring points and planes can be created in a CFD model, which can take both point data and area-average DPM data as input. The hybrid methodology is intended to combine the advantages of the two by using the CFD results to update the network model results at key locations. A field study was conducted in a dead-end heading in an underground gold mine in the United States. Real-time DPM monitors were used to collect data. A CFD model and a network model were built for the experiment area. The CFD model was calibrated to the experimental data. In the study presented here, results from a calibrated CFD model are converted to equivalent diesel emission rates in the ventilation network model at a shared outlet. The hybrid methodology is used to provide better input for the network model. INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation system is one of the most important parts for an underground mine. It not only provides fresh air to the personnel but also helps clear the contaminants generated from the diesel-powered equipment. For most underground metal and non-metal mines, diesel particulate matter is the main contaminant. It is also the focus of this paper."

We have been in business 129 years and like most of the coal mining companies in the United States, since 1969 the majority of our safety improvement efforts had been driven by compliance with the various versions of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act and the supporting federal regulations. In 2004 Peabody Energy management came to the understanding that in order to achieve our goal of zero incidents, that focus must change. This paper will describe the elements of the journey we began at that point to make the transition to a behavior and systems-based approach to safety management and our efforts to win the minds and hearts of our employees. This journey is undertaken with the goal of making safety truly a way of life for all Peabody Energy employees.

"This paper presents the learning from Alcoa Po9os de Caldas Smelter in Brazil, after several energy restrictions resulting from the failures of three rectifier units at its power switchyard. Starting on December 27th, fuses and diodes failed in three rectifier units of Potline #1, causing a long and dangerous power interruption. Even after current was reestablished, amperage was only 70% of the line target leading to a bath freezing process that lasted for around 48 hours. The process engineering team played with several potroom parameters as pot resistance, bath and metal levels, alumina feeding and bath chemistry in an attempt to minimize impact on the potline metal output and energy consumption. As it will be illustrated, the first battle was to keep the pots running on a ""survival"" approach. After that, several changes took place on the procedures used to run at reduced current which were considered rather successful. Finally, some recommendations will be given to foresee and prevent transformers and rectifiers from undesirable failures."

Introduction The papers that follow deal with recently completed major improvements in practices at the Sullivan operations in Kimberley. The papers have been prepared by members of the Consolidated Engineering Staff and outline the construction programme which has been in progress for the past three years, entailing an expenditure of some millions of dollars. Four major operational changes have been brought about in the mine and concentrator. They are: (1) A change in backfill procedure for filling stopes below the 3900 level. (2) A 12,000-ton,per-day sink-float plant at the concentrator. (3) A new haulage system from the mine to the concentrator. (4) A completely new crushing plant and ore storage facilities located underground. A brief outline of the background and history leading up to this overall project will be given to show how each started as an independent betterment and how they were finally co-ordinated into one major programme. The first of these, namely, the necessity for backfilling stopes below the 3900 level, was the most pressing problem. All filling to date bad been done above the 3900 level, where mining was carried on in an irregular pattern of open stoping. Stopes below the 3900 level were first opened in 1940 and are being worked on a regular pattern of panel sub-level open diamond drill stopes. The two areas are separated by a sill pillar traversing the entire length of the vein at the 3900 level elevation.

The ability to continuously monitor the air quality within a mine has become instrumental in becoming a low cost producer. The many considerations involved in monitoring air quality include sensor type, hardware placement, as well as data storage medium. BESTECH has had the opportunity to gain insight into these air quality monitoring considerations through deployments of NRG1-ECOTM, a minewide energy consumption optimization system. This paper explores the particular challenges overcome through these installations, and provides a set of guidelines for mines that want to maximize data capture while minimizing costs. It provides a view of additional benefits of air quality monitoring, such as ventilation control, reporting and trending.
