"In this study, the vapour phase reduction of titanium tetrachloride conforms to the traditional Kroll chemistry, but employs argon as an inert carrier gas and requires a higher reaction temperature of 1150°C to 1250°C. A vapour phase reaction is advantageous because titanium is the only condensed phase present, and the metal can be collected free of magnesium or magnesium chloride, in marked contrast to the titanium sponge produced by the conventional Kroll process. The yield of metallic titanium from the reaction was determined as magnesium additions ranged from 36% to 168% of the stoichiometric requirement. Yields of over 99% were obtained when an excess of magnesium was present. Although the collection efficiency was low, metallic titanium was collected at the reaction site, where all other species were present as vapours. Magnesium and chlorine concentrations in the collected titanium were less than 0.3%.IntroductionA proposed method (Curlook, 1987) for titanium production has been investigated as an alternative to the conventional Kroll process (Kroll, 1940). The advantages of the new process include a simplified means of recovering the product metal, and a potential for lower overall energy consumption and greater product purity. A higher reaction temperature for the reduction of titanium tetrachloride results in a vapour phase reaction, rather than the conventional liquid phase reaction. Extraction by organic solvents is a chemical process in which metal species in the aqueous phase react with an organic reagent to form an organometallic com- plex, thus, the metal species leave the aqueous phase and enter the organic phase from which it can be stripped back in the aqueous phase to obtain a pure and a concentrated solution. The metal in the organic phase is not bound to carbon atoms as in organometallic compounds but to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or hydrogen by a co-ordination (dative) bond (Habashi, 1999).Solvent extraction was used for the first time in hydrometallurgy in connec- tion with the special and urgent materials requirements of nuclear energy during World War II. A plant was constructed in the United States for the preparation of high-purity uranyl nitrate solution. In this plant, the yellow cake (a high-grade sodium or ammonium uranate) was dis- solved in HNO,, and uranium was selec- tively extracted by ether then stripped by water to give a concentrated solution of pure uranyl nitrate. This was gradually followed by developing methods for other high-priced metals such as plutonium, thorium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, boron, beryllium, and molybde num. The second step took place in the 1960s when solvent extraction was applied for the first time to extract a rela- tively cheap metal-copper. Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from mine wastes is one of the most environmental challenge currently facing the mining industry. AMD is the result of the natural oxidation of sulphides exposed to air and water. When mining wastes have the potential to produce AMD, these reactive wastes have to be managed to meet existing environmental regulations. The LTA site (property of Barrick Gold Corp.) contains sulphide tailings that have the potential to generate AMD. The closure option Barrick selected was to construct a multilayered cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE). The main objective of this CCBE is to prevent the production of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from the tailings stack covering an area of approximately 60 ha. Since its construction in 1996, the cover has been monitored to evaluate its performance. Two of the measured parameters are volumetric water content and matrix suction. This paper presents some of the main results from the monitoring program that started seven years ago. The results show that the cover is largely able to maintain a high degree of saturation (greater than 85%) in the moisture-retaining layer. The actual performance of the CCBE on the flat surface of the 60 ha site is even better than expected at the design stage. The area that requires more specific attention with the LTA cover is the influence of slopes that can reduce the performance of the CCBE during dry periods. However, these effects seems to be local and do not significantly affect the overall performance of the CCBE to mitigate the production of AMD at the LTA site.

Smelter slags contain valuable metals such as Co, Ni and Cu in proportions of less than 1 wt% along with about 40 wt% of Fe and 15 wt% of Si. Although aqueous SO2 is a versatile lixiviant for transition metals, dissolving the slag in aqueous SO2 produces solutions in which Co and Ni concentrations are lower than that of Fe due to the low metal/ Fe ratio in the slag. To develop the options for increasing Co and Ni concentrations the solubility of slag in aqueous SO2 was studied experimentally and theoretically using OLI, a software package for simulating electrolytes chemistry. The modeling results correlated well with experimental results. The model suggested that the species dominating the system was FeSO3, which would precipitate out as FeSO3.3H2O when the concentration of Fe+2 reached 1.22 molal and the concentration of S032- was beyond 1.4 molal. In the experiments the influence of pH and solids loading were studied. The leach solution obtained after dissolution of slag at 50% solids loading had a pH of 1.85. On raising the pH to 3, precipitation occurred. Analysis of the solution collected after the addition of alkali showed over 50% reduction of Fe, Co and Ni. XRD analysis revealed the precipitate to be of amorphous nature due to the silica present. The analysis confirmed that the precipitate was mainly FeSO3.3H2O. The paper also discusses the potential impact of the slag on the environment.

"In mills, metallurgical efficiency is important in every step of the operation through to the tails. Different problems which hinder metallurgical efficiency exist in different mills. One such problem occurred in the Bralorne mill at the tailings end of the circuit, where the washing efficiency of the filters was so low that serious losses in dissolved gold occurred.The new cyanide plant at Bralorne went on stream in August 1961. Test work done showed that: a flowsheet of grinding in water, jigging, thickening, agitating, followed by double filtration, gave satisfactory results and was more economical than a counter current plant. Two filters, 141 x 161, with approximately 700 square feet of filtering surface on each, were purchased and installed in series. Test work showed that this was ample filtering area for 500 tons per day.When the plant started up a density of 45% solids was maintained in the agitators, and a 20 ounce cotton dl1ck was used on the filters. Vacuum was between 23 - 25 inches. Under these conditions the filters would not work and only picked up a very slight skim of pulp. Various speeds were experimented with, 4 minutes per revolution being the most efficient. At this speed the thickness of the pulp on the filters increased to about 1/8”• It was therefore quite apparent that, under these conditions, the filters would not handle very much tonnage and the mill tonnage would have to be reduced drastically until the problem was solved."

"The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from underground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12851 g/t (375 oz/T) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.In the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/T) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however, indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results.The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this data base, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

The consolidation of soil material is central to many types of engineering analysis. Problems such as the building of highway structures, landfills, or buildings over saturated soft clays require application of such theory. It has been found in industry that the application of consolidation theory has lagged significantly behind the theory which has been developed some time ago. The application of small-strain saturated consolidation theory was first proposed in a 1D form by Terzaghi. Although this theory has been available for some time it?s implementation into software packages in 2D and 3D forms has been slow due to inherent complexities in the coupling equations. The flow and stress equations are also inherently somewhat unstable and this further complicates software implementation. Of particular interest in the mining industry is the consolidation of uranium tailings. One such disposal method that has been utilized is the subaqueous deposition of uranium tailings in large pit structures. When performing such deposition the calculation of consolidation rates is central to determining final pit capacity and expected life. Consolidation software can be successfully used in such cases in order to determine pit filling rates. The primary complexity, however, is that tailings are typically deposited in slurry form and therefore the potential deformations are large. Large-strain consolidation theory is therefore required in order to properly solve the deformations over time. This paper presents the use of a large-strain consolidation analysis in order to predict long-term filling rates in a uranium tailings pit.

"Abstract - The size, morphology, surface texture, per cent mineral inclusions, and bulk chemistry (Ag and trace elements) of placer gold particles vary systematically according to transport distance from source rocks, as indicated by a case study from the Pioneer district in Montana, and data from the literature.Placer gold samples show a rapid decrease in mean and maximum particle length, and a gradual increase in flatness index (F.I. = length + breadth/2 X thickness) from about F.I. = 2 in bedrock deposits, to as much as F.I. = 45 over transport distances of several tens of kilometers. Primary mineral inclusions (mainly quartz, sulfide minerals, and iron oxides) are mostly lost within 10 km to 20 km of fluvial transport; this loss of quartz and trace metals causes a major change in bulk chemistry of placer gold samples. Following the loss of inclusions and the development of flakes, edges of flakes are folded and the mean number of folded edges in a sample increases with distance. When viewed under the electron microscope, surface textures of placer gold particles also become progressively more pitted with distance.Analysis of placer gold particles can be used to help evaluate placer source-area problems (placers with no known hard-rock gold deposits). For example, coarse placer gold containing abundant inclusions indicates a proximal source. On the other hand, an abundance of thin flakes is evidence of a long transport distance and possible reworking from older gravels. Placer gold characteristics can therefore provide information on distance to mineralized source rocks."

Abstract - The often complex, erratic, and localized nature of gold is a common feature of many vein-style gold deposits. This style of mineralization is often referred to as being nuggety or possessing a high-nugget effect. As a result of these complexities resource estimation is difficult and in general, only Exploration Results can be provided or an Inferred Mineral Resource estimated from surface drilling data alone. Underground development, further drilling, and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Resources. Tonnages can generally be estimated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because it is commonly highly erratic and discontinuous in nature. The dependency of higher confidence Resource categories on development information may create a Catch 22 situation, with funding for such development often depending on the prior definition of at least Indicated Resources. There are no easy solutions to these challenges posed by high-nugget effect deposits, and it is important when classifying and reporting not to downplay the uncertainties often associated with Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates for such deposits. However, in common with all deposit types, if the principles that underpin the estimation, classification, and reporting procedures are borne in mind and common sense applied, most issues can be satisfactorily resolved. This paper discusses the classification and reporting of Mineral Resources for high-nugget effect gold vein deposits within the framework of the JORC Code (JORC, 1999).

"Flotation is a complex and highly multivariate process. Using the conventional OFf (one-factor-at-a-time) technique, the optimization of flotation circuits through laboratory or plant testwork is difficult, time-consuming and therefore, expensive and often results in marginal improvements. The optimal operating conditions can be more efficiently estimated when a systematic approach like SDE (Statistical Design of Experiments) is taken.The concentrator of Noranda's Brunswick Mining Division (near Bathurst, New-Brunswick) is well known for the complexity of its differential copper-lead-zinc flotation circuits. One of them, the chalcopyrite-galena separation (or CuSep) circuit, is impacted by more than 20 variables.Statistical Design of Experiments (SDE) techniques were applied at the laboratory scale to improve the performance of Brunswick's CuSep circuit. Screening tests were conducted using Fractional Factorial designs while optimization tests were carried out based on Response Surface Modelling techniques like the Central Composite design. Every series of tests, without exception, revealed new information and process insights which led to significant circuit performance improvements in the plant So far, the metallurgical gain may be as high as four percentage points of copper recovery (in the CuSep circuit). Potential cost savings of expensive consumables (steam, activated carbon) have also been identified but will require additional circuit modifications before being realized.IntroductionIn spite of its apparent simplicity, flotation is a complex three-phase (solid, liquid and gas) separation process. Fundamentally, it is a highly multivariate process. Industrial flotation circuits are commonly affected by 10 or more process variables."

"The utility of high-density stream sediment and stream water sampling to the exploration for silver deposits was investigated by the study of the epithermal Ag-Au base-metal prospect at Lagalochan in western Scotland. The geology of Lagalochan is dominated by a calc-alkaline Caledonian intrusive complex emplaced into Dalradian Supergroup rocks (Harris et al., 1988a). The complex consists of subvolcanic porphyrytic rocks associated with intense hydrothermal alteration and brecciation. Early Cu-Ag-Mo-rich mineralization is found in the core of the complex with later Pb-Zn-Ag-Au-As-Sb-rich mineralization toward the margins (op. cit.).Stream sediment sample analysis spatially resolved the Cu-rich and Ag-rich mineralization. Ag and Cu anomalies relative to local background values were found in all size fractions analyzed (-125µm, +125 µm, +180 µm, +250 µm) but the more pronounced anomalies were found in the -125 µm fraction. The coarser fractions generally revealed more erratic but longer dispersion trails. The separation of Cu-rich and Ag-rich mineralization is also apparent in the distribution of relatively high dissolved Cu and Ag in stream waters, particular when expressed relative to the solute load as Cu/TDS and Ag/TDS.The mineralization at Lagalochan is indicated by Ag, Cu and Pb stream sediment and water concentrations that are anomalous with respect to local backgrounds, but are difficult to distinguish from regional backgrounds. This emphasizes the further potential of high-density stream water sampling,in particular, as a viable geochemical exploration tool on a sub-regional scale for epithermal depositsin relatively unpolluted upland terranes."

"A gravity concentration process has been applied to ores from the Clogau Mine, north Wales, the Tyndrum deposit, central Scotland and an alluvial ore from Leadhills area of Scotland. In the case of the Welsh ore and the alluvial deposit the gold grains in the concentrate and tailings streams have been characterised in terms of their three dimensions.In the case of Welsh ore, the thickness of a gold grain has been shown to be the single most important factor in determining behaviour in a gravity concentration operation. Six indices were used to quantify the overall geometry of the gold grains and those which incorporate a thickness term have proven to be effective in predicting the destination of gold particles within the concentration circuit. It is proposed that the most simple of these, the Heywoods flakiness ratio, has potential for the control of milling operations as an alternative to the established practice of characterising the size of the mill discharge.The effect of grain geometry on the recovery of fine gold has been studied using Tyndrum ore. The recovery of gold by gravity concentration increased from 20% to 70% when the criteria used to design the milling operation was the prevention of over grinding of gold grains.The destination of alluvial grains in the concentration circuit did not show such dependence on shape, and this has been attributed to the effective classification of all the gold grains in the sample by fluvial action producing a population of similar geometric characteristics."

This survey continues the long tradition of providing a snapshot of operating data from industrial electrorefineries. It is a supplement to previous surveys that were performed in 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. Analyses of current data and historical trends are presented. Examples of innovations to reduce costs, improve productivity, and improve quality are provided. In general, refineries continue to increase productivity while treating anodes with more impurities. INTRODUCTION This manuscript analyzes global survey data provided by operating copper electrorefineries. This paper continues a series of surveys of copper refining tankhouses that started in 1987 (Schloen, 1987, 1991; Schloen & Davemport, 1995; Davenport et al., 1999; Robinson et al., 2003; Moats et al., 2007, 2013, 2016). In this installment, data collected from 2015 and 2018 will be presented and analyzed. The 2015 survey data were presented at Copper 2016 in Kobe, Japan. This survey will continue the analysis of previous data to illustrate long term trends in copper electrorefining, which were originally presented at the Davenport Symposium in October, 2014 (Moats, Robinson, & Wang, 2014). Refineries who supplied surveys are listed in Table 1. Cathode production data from 2015 and 2017/18 (from surveys presented in 2016 and 2019) are provided to indicate which plants provided surveys and when. This manuscript presents operating data for ~6.5 million tonnes of copper production, which represents 30–35% of the world’s copper electrorefining production. "High Pressure Grinding Roll (“HPGR”) technology is applied in a broadening range of minerals processing applications for relatively wet or moist materials. HPGR grinding of dry material or involving drying and air classification is more common, for example in cement manufacturing. A number of minerals processing plants are also operating with dry material, either due to process reasons, such as considerations of preceding or subsequent process stages, or as dictated by local conditions of arid areas and scarcity of water. The present world-wide expectation of decreasing availability of water supply urges us to look for alternatives that minimize water consumption.Recently established and envisaged future HPGR applications with dry ores have indicated that the technology of dry crushing and classification as practiced in cement and limestone grinding can be applied in minerals processing. Moreover, dry technology could very well be applied for generating a final fine product at sizes near or below 100 microns, as may be required for beneficiation by, for instance, flotation, magnetic separation or tank leaching.Dry HPGR grinding requires special attention in maintaining suitable process economics, when considering power input in grinding, drying and classification. In some cases, HPGR capacity and roll surface wear life may be negatively affected by a lack of moisture in the feed.This publication summarizes some of the features of, and experiences in dry HPGR applications. This includes design aspects of the classification system and discussion of the wear protection of the roll surfaces. The paper also includes examples of operational experiences of dry practices in minerals processing and cement plants."

"A support system for large ground convergence conditions or burst-prone ground must contain holding elements (rockbolts, cable bolts, etc.) that are strong yet capable of sustaining large deformations, i.e., they must absorb as much energy as possible. Steel wire rope anchored in a borehole by a friction bolt provides these desired yield characteristics if the frictional anchorage is placed deep enough into the rockmass, i.e., in non-yielding rock or beyond the expected depth of rock ejected during a rockburst. Pull-out tests were conducted on wire ropes anchored by inflated Swellex bolts to assess the feasibility of this support concept. The test results demonstrate that a Swellex bolt generates a frictional anchorage that allows the wire rope to slide at high loads and to absorb significantly more energy than either a Swellex bolt alone, or a cement-grouted cable.The rope/friction bolt combination can be engineered to provide the desired energy absorption and allowable deformation by varying the installed lengths of the friction bolt and the rope. For yielding rope support, the contact length between the rope and Swellex bolt must be short enough to ensure that the rope can slip well before its tensile capacity is reached. A safe maximum overlap length is about one metre for the wire rope used in this testing. When used as support in the backs of drifts, a swaged button on the ropes end must be used to ultimately mobilize the full rope capacity thereby protecting against gravity-driven falls of ground."

"While not taking issue with the general thesis expressed in Dr. Ridge's analysis of the role of genetic concepts versus observational data in ore exploration (Ridge, 1983), the criticism could be offered that the author tends to slight the importance of conceptual (i.e. theoretical) models in mineral exploration.As a general rule, observational data in science lacks significance and utility without a theoretical construct to organize those observations. Theory in turn dictates what observations are made-and which ones are judged important. Thus, for example, prior to the elaboration-and acceptance- of the current model for volcanogenic base metal deposits, the structural aspect s of these deposits were most closely observed and studied by explorationists. The nature of the enclosing rocks and any attendant alteration was given minimal attention, and certainly didn't figure prominently as an exploration guide.Similarly, the importance of alteration features to exploration for porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits was only perceived when a theoretical model was developed to account for these aspects. Indeed, many of these porphyry copper deposits were regarded as epigenetic vein deposits by geologists of an earlier era observing and examining on a different physical scale-and with a different theoretical bias.In constructing and evaluating such conceptual models, explorationists primarily rely on observation data and proximate associations; speculative thoughts as to ultimate provenance or crustal evolution clearly play a subordinate role, as Dr. Ridge argues. This, however, should not obscure the fact that concepts and theories do indeed exert a major influence in mineral exploration."

The development of specific risk-based methodologies to guide and prioritize clearing decisions in countries contaminated by Unexploded Ordnance and Land Mines (generically defined as Explosive Remnants of War: ERW) either at country-wide scale or road-network-scale was used in an unexpected way when a large mining company asked Riskope (www.riskope.com) to develop a multi-modal transportation network risk assessment plan, which included ocean going vessels, ports, wharves, railroad, trucking and other modes of transportation. What had been a first-in-the-world attempt in the humanitarian landmine clearing industry turned out to be extremely useful and equally innovative in the extractive corporate world. Instead of a country contaminated by man-made hazards such as Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) we were now dealing with a very complex multi-modal transportation system afflicted by all sorts of potential hazards from quakes to climate change, sabotage to labour strikes, and vulnerable infrastructures to potential energy crises. Interestingly enough the method developed to deal with ERW risk based clearing was also capable of solving the transportation risk evaluation problem, after necessary customization. This paper shows how ?out of the box? thinking and industry cross dissemination can bring significant evolution and a competitive edge even to unexpected areas of the world-wide mining industry. The results of the logistic system risk assessment shed new light on the management of the system, changed the way insurance coverage was purchased, and led to significant potential cost reductions in a period of global recession.

"The Fox Mine has been producing copper/ zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978all production was derived from longhole open stopes. In June 1978, a trial stope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both stopes and pillars at Fox Mine.When production blasting was started in the first stope, the biggest problem encountered was the production of large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas as a result of secondary sulphide dust explosions. This gas generation resulted in lost production time and caused minor damage to underground installations to the blast level, and to the headframe. Sulphur dioxide generation has been noted in secondary drawpoint blasts and, on rare occasions, in drift rounds.This paper discusses the occurrence of the sulphur blasts and the practices and precautions used to prevent their reoccurrence at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox minesite is located 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. With production startup in 1970, Fox Mine is owned and operated by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited.The Fox orebody occurs as a large lenticular zone of semi-massive sulphides approximately 1,500 feet long and 15 to 100 feet wide running east and west. "This paper covers the development of the property to its present production level of20,000 tonnes per day from the Valley Mine. It will also review the analysis of various case studies for the expansion of the project to its full potential, and discuss the impact of the recent structural change in the copper market on the development of a large low-grade deposit such as Valley.IntroductionIn 1964 Cominco participated, along with a number of other companies and individuals, in the formation of Valley Copper Mines Ltd. This company was formed in order to facilitate exploration on a large number of mineral claims held by these parties in British Columbia's Highland Valley, approximately 400 km northeast of Vancouver (Fig. I). Cominco 's ownership of Valley Copper was gradually increased over the years bot h through shares gained for exploration expenditures and through shares purchased on the open market. By the mid- 1970sCominco' s interest in Valley Copper exceeded 80%.ExplorationExploration from 1964 to 1969 led to the discovery of a massive porphyry copper depo sit now known as the Valley orebody. A claim boundary divided the deposit with 80% of it on Valley Copper claims and 20070 on claims held by Bethlehem Copper which was already mining adjacent copper orebodies. During the period when the Valley ore body was discovered, exploration by other companies resulted in the discovery of the large Lornex and Highrnont deposits nearby. The stage was now set for the Highland Valley to become an important copper-producing area (Fig. 2)."
