"The binary Fe53Mo47 and ternary Fe54Mo30P16 coatings have been electrodeposited from citrate-based electrolyte on mild steel (MS) substrates. The electrodeposition has been conducted for 6 hours at 20 mA cm-2 and 30°C. The electrochemical tests were carried out in chlorate solutions containing 300 g L-1 NaCl and 4 g L-1 K2Cr2O7 at pH 6.4 and 80°C. A number of surface characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD and EMP were used to study the microstructure of the alloys. The electrocatalytic activity of these coatings was investigated using steady-state polarization and galvanostatic technique. This study revealed that the Fe-Mo-P coating could be considered as a promising cathode material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed an important decrease of hydrogen overpotential for Fe-Mo-P alloy as compared to that of Fe-Mo and especially MS which is a traditional cathode in chlorate industry. The HER overpotential for Fe54Mo30P16 at current density of 250 mA cm-2 was decreased by 30% in comparison to that of MS (1029 mV), and by 16.5% to that of Fe53Mo47 coating (857 mV).INTRODUCTIONSodium chlorate is used for manufacturing of several daily consumption products. This chemical is mainly employed for the production of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) that is a bleaching agent used in the pulp and paper industry. "IntroductionDuring and since• the war, it has been my privilege to work closely with those in Canada who are responsible for the vital raw materials needed in our co-operative atomic energy programme. The understanding which has developed between our two groups in this all-important enterprise has been a great source of pleasure. We in the United States are aware of the importance of the contribution made by Canada to this project, and we look forward to continuing our mutually advantageous relationship.The impact of World War II, and the decision by Canada, Great Britain, and the United States to join in a programme for the development of atomic weapons, created a sudden and immense demand for uranium minerals. Early in the raw materials programme, it was evident that sufficient raw materials to fulfill war-time atomic weapon requirements could be secured from three sources: the rich pitchblende deposits of the Eldorado , mine at Great Bear lake; the Shinkolobwe mine in the Belgian Congo; and as a by-product of the vanadium industry of the Colorado Plateau in the United States. In the early part of the programme, therefore, our joint efforts were directed toward obtaining immediate maximum production from these localities. The contribution made by Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944), Limited, both in supplying and refining raw materials, was and continues to be of vital importance.In addition, it was also obvious from the first that in this programme, as in any mining enterprise, exploration activities directed•toward the discovery and development of new sources of uranium ore were essential if production were to be maintained over an extended period of time. In order to satisfy obvious security requirements during the war, it was necessary to proceed with this exploration programme, both in Canada and the United States, as secretly as possible. With the end of the war, and the revelation that an atomic weapon had been developed, however, secrecy in exploration was no longer required. The important thing was to get on with a broadened exploration programme."

For SOFCs, composite cathodes comprising an electronically conducting electro¬catalyst (e.g. LSM) and an conically conducting electrolyte material (e.g. YSZ) are considered to improve the electrochemical performance by extending the active reaction zone to regions beyond the electrolyte-electrode interface, as in the case of conventional cathodes. Interpretation of experimental data for composite cathodes, however, is complicated by the mixed conducting behaviour which results in local overpotential distributions throughout the composite cathode. These local overpotentials depend on many factors, such as the composition, particle size, porosity and thickness of the cathode. Reliable experimental data obtained from composite cathodes requires carefully crafted microstructural parameters in order to minimize the overpotential variations. A mathematical model of a composite cathode was developed using coupled differential equations describing transport and consumption of chemical species, oxygen ion and electrons. Simulations under various oxygen concentrations were used to obtain the reaction order of the oxygen reduction reaction. An apparent po2 dependency was then extracted from the predicted Rp vs P02 data. It was found that this p02 dependency can be significantly influenced by the micro-structural parameters of a composite cathode, primarily due to local overpotential distributions.

In this study, 3.1 mm thick Ti-5553 (Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr) butt joints were autogenously welded using a 4 kW continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. The effect of welding speed and defocusing distance on the weld quality was investigated in terms of the surface morphology, welding defects, microstructure and hardness. Welds with full penetration were achieved at a defocusing distance ranging from -1 mm to 0 mm and welding speeds from 2.25 to 6.0 m/min. Underfill and porosity were the two main defects most frequently observed but within the optimum process window these defects could be maintained to meet aerospace specification tolerances. The fusion zone (FZ) consisted entirely of retained beta with a refined dendritic morphology. Compared to the bimodal alpha (a) + beta (ß) microstructure of the base metal (BM), the dissolution of the a phase was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ), which led to an 11 % decrease in hardness from the BM to the FZ. To determine the tensile properties of the welded samples, an automated 3D deformation measurement system was used to measure the local strain in the weld region. The yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased with increasing welding speed with a highest joint efficiency of 75 % being achieved, albeit with a concomitant reduction in the ductility.

BIOX® has been successfully demonstrated over the past 2 decades for the recovery of gold from refractory sulphide concentrates. To date 12 successful BIOX® plants have been installed in 8 countries spanning 4 continents with the 13th installation currently nearing completion in the Philippines. In 2010 BIOMIN introduced the ASTER™ process for improved water balances in commercial BIOX® applications by supporting tightening environmental legislation on water usage and availability in both arid and tropical regions. Previously, a common challenge for BIOX® plants was the inability to recycle thiocyanate containing water due to the low tolerance of the organisms. ASTER™, a biological thiocyanate and cyanide destruction process, renders a non-toxic solution for re-use in BIOX®. Two commercial ASTER™ plants are in operation with the 3rd ASTER™ plant under construction in the Philippines. A 3rd BIOMIN technology, specifically developed for double refractory ores is available for implementation. The HiTeCC process has shown considerable success on ores where competition from disseminated carbon has rendered ineffective gold recoveries. Through HiTeCC, gold is desorbed from the carbonaceous matter by manipulating the ionic strength and temperature of conventionally treated CIL product. One Australian commercial plant utilises HiTeCC while a 2nd installation is set for commissioning 4th Quarter 2014. BIOMIN’s premier solutions for refractory gold processing are described herein.

"The extractive metallurgy of gold ores is largely driven by their grade and mineralogy. The concentration of gold in the crust is extremely low and highly variable, resulting ore variability in many gold and copper-gold deposits. More importantly, gold in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface gold), making gold ore processing extremely challenging. Geometallurgy is a technique to document variability within an orebody and quantify and evaluate the impact of many factors including geology and mineralogy on grinding, flotation, leaching and metal recovery processes. The objective of gold geometallurgy is to reduce and minimize the technical risk in project evaluation, plant design, mine planning and production forecasting through geometallurgical modelling, representative sampling and subsequent systematic mineralogical and metallurgical testwork. Gold deportment study is a powerful tool in characterization of various gold ores. Effective and quantitative gold deportment results are critical and useful for predicting gold recovery and building geometallurgical models of gold ores. This paper provides an overview of geometallurgy fundamentals and applications in gold processing, with a focus being on the ore characterization and gold deportment study.INTRODUCTION Geometallurgy is an inter-disciplinary approach which links the geological, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics to the metallurgical performance of an orebody. Combined with mine planning, it has been used in scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, process design and optimization of gold, copper-gold, copper-moly, nickel and iron projects among others (Williams & Richardson, 2004; Dobby, Bennett, Bulled, & Kosick, 2004; Bulled, 2007; Bulled, Leriche, Blake, Thompson, & Wilkie, 2009; Kormos, Sliwinski, Oliveira, & Hill, 2013; Muinonen, Sciortino, Korczak, & St-Jean, 2013; Leichliter & Larson, 2013; Leichliter, Jahoda, & Montoya, 2013; Hatton & Hatfield, 2013; Baumgartner et al., 2011, 2013; Hoal, Woodhead, & Smith, 2013; Zhou, 2013). The goal of a gold or copper-gold geometallurgical program is to characterize and understand the metallurgical variability of an orebody, such as comminution, gravity, flotation and cyanidation parameters and metal recoveries, and to build a geomet model which can be used to assist in mine planning and to predict the plant performance. In any geometallurgical program, representative sampling is the key to ensure the results of a geometallurgical study will reflect future performance once the plant is commissioned. Geometallurgy compliments, but does not replace, the traditional mineralogical and metallurgical approach during the development and operation of a gold or copper-gold project. Geometallurgy is a methodology for testwork design and a framework for mine planning. The first part of this paper provides an overview of geometallurgy fundamentals and application in gold ore processing."

"AS THE TITLE implies, this paper will deal with the unusual rather than the standard practices as employed . at the property of North Rankin Nickel Mines, Limited. Fortunately •the mining, with the exception of permafrost conditions, and the milling practices, are the normal approaches dictated by the size, type, and character of the orebody. The unusual aspects are linked directly or indirectly to the isolated location and are •principally ancillary requirements or services covering a broad range from climate to supplies and from finance to entertainment. It is our intent to cover the more salient points of interest together with a brief description of the general operation.To understand the primary motivation of the mine, it must be made clear that North Rankin was conceived as a foothold in the Canadian North, that region embracing 40 per cent of the Dominion which ex-tends north of the commercial tree-line and which includes nearly 50 per cent of the Precambrian Shield, our mainstay of Canadian mining. Secondly, this project was born in an atmosphere of premium sales in the nickel markets, assuring a rapid pay-back of the heavy •capital expenditures. And finally, it has •been coddled through the stark reality of a competitive metal market with the hope and trust that the experiences and achievements will lead over the bill to a bigger and better mine in this virgin territory. This is the briefest story of the mine's history, but it pays tribute to the many people who, in thirty years since .discovery, have championed this project."

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. "An integrated nickel flash smelter is operated with Peirce-Smith converters at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. To improve the partitioning of arsenic between slag waste and matte product, an option to modify the slag–matte chemistry by addition of CaO was analysed. A combination of plant sample analysis, high-temperature laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modeling was carried out to evaluate the process options. The high-temperature experiments involved the re-equilibration of industrial matte-slag samples at 1225 °C and P(SO2) = 0.12 atm, rapid quenching in water, and direct measurement of phase compositions using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LAICPMS). A private thermodynamic database for nickel sulfide smelting and converting was used together with the FactSage thermochemical software package to assist in the analysis of the distribution of elements between slag and matte as a function of CaO addition. The thermodynamic predictions combined with experimental data obtained in this study can be used to characterise the effect of CaO fluxing on the slag–matte thermochemistry during the nickel sulfide converting.INTRODUCTION At the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS), nickel sulfide concentrate is processed in an Outotec-type flash furnace to produce nickel matte containing +47 wt% Ni. Separation of nickel matte and waste slag from the flash smelting is enhanced through settling in the electric arc -heated zone attached to the flash furnace. The flash furnace matte is further processed in a Peirce-Smith converter to produce Ni-rich matte containing +66 wt% Ni (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011). Iron silicate-based slag is used in the converting process at KNS. Most of the arsenic is contained in the final matte and very little of the arsenic partitions into the slag. Previous work by Font et al (Font, Hino, & Itagaki, 2003) shows that the distribution ratio of arsenic between calcium ferrite slag and nickel-matte (LAsslag/matte) is significantly higher than that between iron silicate slag and nickel-matte, where LAsslag/matte = (wt pct As in slag)/{wt pct As in matte} (1)"

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have many key applications in traditional and advanced technologies. A shortage of several critical REEs is expected due to the discrepancy between the availability of REEs from REE deposits and the REE demand from the market. REE recovery and separation from secondary resources such as uranium wastes and recycled materials might help balance the shortfall in a cost-effective way. This paper presents data concerning the recovery of heavy REEs (HREEs) from uranium raffinate. It also discusses the design, commissioning, and operation of a solvent extraction pilot plant for the separation of REEs.RÉSUMÉ Les éléments des terres rares (ÉTR) trouvent de nombreuses applications importantes dans les technologies classiques et de pointe. On prévoit une pénurie de plusieurs ÉTR critiques en raison des divergences constatées entre la disponibilité des ÉTR provenant de gisement d’éléments des terres rares, et la demande d’ÉTR sur le marché. La récupération et la séparation des ÉTR à partir de ressources secondaires telles que les déchets générés par le traitement du minerai d’uranium et les matériaux recyclés pourraient contribuer à équilibrer cette pénurie de manière rentable. REE oxalate precipitation can effectively remove Fe, Al, Ca, Si, and other impurities by taking advantage of the solubility difference between REE oxalates and impurities in the acidic solution (Xu, 2005)."

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. In Canada, although some research on extraction metallurgy is carried out by the universities and by government, the primary responsibility for the research necessary to the mining industry rests on the industry it-self. Automation is coming more slowly to the mining industry than to others, partly because of the problems of instrumentation. Operations research methods are, however, coming into use. Some new developments in the extraction of aluminum, in iron and steel, in pyrometallurgy and in pressure leaching of nickel, copper, zinc and lead are briefly outlined. Mention is made of uranium and the reactive metals. The importance of the by-product metals, notably antimony, bismuth, gallium, germanium, indium and tellurium, in the development of the electronics industry is also mentioned. The trend toward co-operative research by groups of producers, to develop markets for their products, is noted. In conclusion, there are a greater number of trained scientists, as well as larger amounts of scientific knowledge, available to the mineral industry than ever before, and, if properly used, this will result in great benefits to the industry and to Canada.

In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation?s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

Iron ore fines are by-products of iron ore mining operations. Unlike iron ore lumps, fines cannot directly be used in conventional iron making processes, and consequently large quantities accumulate around the world. Pelletizing and sintering can be used to convert iron ore fines into agglomerates or briquettes for processing with lump ore, but these techniques are energy intensive and produce greenhouse gases. This research investigated the extraction of iron from iron ore fines using acetylacetone (a ß-diketone) as an environmentally friendly alternative process for fines utilization. A 2k factorial experiment design was used to identify the significant extraction variables. It was found that the reaction temperature and solid to liquid ratio had significant effects on the extraction process. The extraction kinetics were studied at different temperatures and the highest iron extraction (97 %) was obtained after 48 hours at 413 K and 0.025:1 (g:mL) solid to liquid ratio for a particle size range of +106 to -150 µm. The extraction products were easily separated from the unreacted acetylacetone by flash distillation and iron(III) acetylacetonate crystals were recovered. An economic evaluation showed that selling the crystals was profitable. Alternatively, the crystals can be reduced with hydrogen to iron particles and acetylacetone (for reuse).

As a branch of Operations Research, decision making is a widely used application in both science and social sciences. There are many different methods developed to solve decision making problems in the literature. In this study, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is performed for the selection of reclamation project selection in an open pit mine and the optimal solution of the problem is investigated. Different reclamation project alternatives are prepared for an open pit mine, which continues to its production activities in magnesite sector in Turkey. The data obtained from Magnesite Cooperation is used in the application of the method. A decision-making process is prepared as considering the project alternatives for the purpose of selecting the most suitable reclamation project. The entire criteria that affect the decision-making process are identified and transformed into a hierarchical structure. The problem is solved by using Fuzzy AHP method developed according to this structure. It is found that Fuzzy AHP is a method that may help decision-makers in solving different decision-making problems in mining.

THE Ross mine, a subsidiary operation of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, is situated near the north end of lot 1, concession 2, Hislop township, Ontario. The property comprises the north half of lot 1, concession 2, and the south one-third of lot 1, concession 3. It is readily reached by a good motor road from the village of Ramore, 7.5 miles to the southeast on the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway. The-mine has been developed to a depth of 900 feet and the current daily production rate is about 260 tons. From the inception of operations in March, 1935, until December 31st, 1942, 455,720 tons of ore with a total value of $4,169,-316 have been milled. The silver to gold ratio of 1.48 to 1 is unusually high for Ontario gold mines. The deposit is interesting because the relationship between hydrothermal metamorphism and three successive stages of fracturing and mineralization is marked with considerable clarity. During the past seven years, detailed geological maps of the mine have been kept up to date, many thousands of feet of diamond-drill core have been logged, and numerous thin and polished ore sections have been studied. The present paper describes the structure and mineralogy of the orebodies.

Volatile gold prices in the face of rising costs for mining and refining is causing the mines to look for new ways to reduce costs and increase recoveries. This task is complicated by the fact that the gold in hereto unexploited reserves is associated with increasingly complex ores - either preg-robbing, refractory, associated with high concentrations of copper, or all of the above. Ion exchange resins can play a significant role in this quest for improvement. Although ion exchange resins have been used in Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries for the recovery of gold for many decades, it is still not widely used in the Western World. Synthetically manufactured ion exchange resins can be tailor-made to suit the chemical and mechanical characteristics of a specific application. As such, ion exchange resins can be used in a variety of solution matrices (e.g. cyanide, thiosulphate and acid), and process designs (recovery from clear liquor after solid-liquid separation or directly from the leached pulp). In this paper, a number of applications are discussed along with a review of recent developments in ion exchange technology.

"Modem aluminum smelters are facing significant operating cost pressure. Key methods used by smelters to manage this pressure are automation and production-information systems to optimize processes, manage quality, anticipate problems and reduce operating costs. In 2002, Aluminerie Alouette Inc. began its Phase II Expansion project, and retained the joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and Hatch (SLH) as its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) team. Alouette had the distinction of being one of the most efficient aluminum smelters in the world. Alouette already understood the importance of systems integration in project delivery. For Phase II, key objectives were identified to ensure ""a state of the art"" integrated architecture that would support Alouette's production goals to integrate the existing facilities with the expansion, to form a single efficient facility and meet project schedule and budget targets. Achieving those objectives within the context of a large project often creates major challenges due to the nature of the traditional EPCM delivery model, which relies on several vendors and third-party-systems integrators. In this case, an integrated Alouette-SLH team was made responsible for all aspects of the systems integration, taking over the task from most suppliers. The integrated team was responsible for delivering an automation system and plant-wide-production IT system for the new facilities while accommodating migration for the existing systems. Through the use of rigorous methodology and advanced state of the art technology, the IT and automation strategy led to significant value creation and is recognized today as one of the key factors of the project's success. The primary results were: fast and efficient start-up of facilities, due to quality programming and implementation; a plant able to operate as a single entity; automation and IT systems delivered before time and under budget; standard programming methods implemented throughout the plant; and reduced and simplified maintenance."

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTIONThe process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. "Air parameter monitoring systems, regardless of gasometrical protections, provide a significant number of measurement data. The obtained data broadens the knowledge on processes taking place in underground workings and shows the relationships and influence of machines and technological processes on the variability of ventilation parameters in the areas of longwalls. Nowadays, computer simulation methods are increasingly used to reproduce the flow of air and methane mixture in the area of longwalls equipped with shearers. The paper presents the results of a research experiment covering a long-term observation of a longwall area during mining with a shearer using sensors from the mine's monitoring system. Data from sensors for methane concentration, pressure and velocity were used and additional ventilation measurements were taken to determine the parameters characterising the air flow in the area. The influence of different machine cycles in the longwall on the changes of air parameters in the area of the longwall was shown. A numerical model of the ventilation area was developed and the computer program VentZroby was used for the calculations, which allows for the simulation of the process of ventilating the area of the active longwall during the extraction of coal with the use of a shearer and haulage of the run-of-mine. Computer simulation of the influence of the shearer's operation and the methane inflow associated with the distribution of the mixture of air and methane was carried out. The results of the simulation were compared with the data recorded by the monitoring system’s sensors during the measurement experiment. Comparison of the recorded methane concentration courses with the results of a computer simulation of the air and methane flow conditions in the mining area showed changes in the gassiness. INTRODUCTION Studies carried out in the Polish and global mining industry show that methane is an obvious factor in limiting mining production due to the loss of continuity in the operation of longwall complexes in hard coal mines under methane emission hazard (Schatzel et al., 2008). In addition, methane hazards have a significant impact on the safety of the operators of machinery in the longwall. The requirements of Polish regulations and the practice of safe operation of mining longwalls require correct determination of gas concentration, volume flow, as well as pressure and temperature of the flowing air. As part of the research undertaken in the Budryk (Wasilewski, 2010) and Bielszowice (Dziurzynski et al., 2009) mines to assess the methane hazard in the longwalls and workings in the vicinity of the longwall, research experiments were carried out, during which air parameters were recorded by the mine monitoring system and additional testing equipment in different cycles of shearer operation."
