Why the need for proactive loose detection? ?? Past history of ground falls in Saskatchewan mines prompted research into new techniques for ground control. ?? Traditional tools for ground assessment (i.e. visual inspection, sounding with scaling bars) are not proactive and can often be time consuming. ?? In the period 1970-1995, a number of hydro metallurgical processes to treat copper concentrates to overcome the pollution problem due to S02 emission in smelters were developed. Pilot and commercial scale plants were built and operated for some time, but eventually all were abandoned a few years later. It is constructive to examine why these processes were abandoned after so much expenditure of funds and effort, so that errors should not be repeated in the future and lessons from the past are learned.

Mining has looked to utilize onboard data systems in our mobile mining fleets to compliment these processes. Combining the two concepts build the concept that Rio Tinto refers to as asset health. These programs can generate a cost shift between $20,000 and $100,000 per piece of equipment annually. Even with the documented savings many operations struggle to justify the systems, why?

"Preg-robbing has been known for many years, where increased losses are suffered because dissolved gold is removed from solution by adsorption onto carbonaceous matter. In direct cyanidation circuits it is reasonable to conclude that the preg-robbed gold is either in a gold cyanide [Au(CN) - 2, AuCN] or metallic [Au°] form. However, in circuits with a pre-oxidation step possibilities increase and multiply even further because of water recycle streams containing apparent and not-so-apparent gold ligands. It is in these circuits where speciation of sorbed gold, i.e. the identification of the gold compound, is useful. The importance arises from the fact that proper identification of the sorbed gold species can be used to determine how, when, where and why gold was removed from solution, thereby identifying the exact cause of the problem and providing clues as to how it may be rectified.INTRODUCTIONTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt ever to speciate gold preg-robbed by carbonaceous matter using a surface sensitive microbeam technique. This approach enables the direct determination of gold species sorbed on carbonaceous particulates, opening an entirely new field in the understanding of the chemistry of gold sorption on carbon. The reasoning behind this effort was to add to the current knowledge of the detrimental effect chloride ions have on gold recovery by the pressure oxidation and in particular why in the ensuing CIL step, gold is not being desorbed from the surface of the carbonaceous particles (Table 1)."

The ACACIA Reactor - Introduction What is it? The Acacia Reactor is a fluidized bed high intensity cyanide leaching system. Purpose for its existence? The Acacia Reactor was developed to treat high grade gold concentrates generated from primary gravity concentration systems. Why intensively cyanide leach a gravity concentrate? Current secondary upgrading processes, such as tabling, create significant losses of fine gold that is initially recovered in the primary gravity concentration units. Additional benefits include improved security and a reduction in health hazards associated with calcining.

It then uses a hypothetical case of a company which has a property it wants to develop to list the sectors within the . Federal Government that would have to be consulted in order to obtain federal financial assistance. The methods of harvesting copper from stainless steel mother plates has been investigated from fundamental and operational experience perspectives. At least five different harvesting techniques have been identified that have different effects on product quality, current efficiency, current distribution, growth morphology and ease of stripping. Each method is examined from fundamental principles to understand what occurs during the harvesting process and why the particular effects are manifested. Experience from plants operating the harvesting method is provided to show that the fundamental understanding is relevant. Best practice harvesting method and harvesting management are described.

ABSTRACT: Milling operations in northern Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin have produced uranium continuously since 1975. During that period, the Athabasca Basin has been one of the world’s premier uranium camps, yielding more than 660 million lb (299,370,964 kg) of U3O8. In this paper, the author describes former and current milling operations and discusses why and how the milling process has changed and developed over the past 35 years. The author’s considerations for the future of uranium extraction in the Athabasca Basin conclude the paper.

The paper uses two hypothetical, but typical, situations to show that hydraulic rock drilling equipment has very significant economic advantages over pneumatic equipment both in drifting applications (even in the situation where advantage is not taken of the high productive capacity of the hydraulic drill) and production drilling applications. Other factors, including the non-economic advantages and the disadvantages of hydraulic drilling, are discussed. The paper concludes with a brief analysis of why the Canadian mining industry has been slow to take advantage of this apparent broadly advantageous advance in rock drilling technology.
