"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. "Reporting of the gold production during a month implies to estimate the mass of gold that is processed by a mill, recovered as dorés, lost to the tailings and the change of gold inventory within the plant equipments. Carbon in pulp and/or carbon in leach tanks may contain gold inventory as large as 72 000 g (2 200 troy oz) of gold which needs to be estimated from measurements obtained from sampling the material contained in a tank. Sampling and analysis introduce measurement errors that could be systematic and/or random. This paper examines the effect of measurement errors on the estimation of the gold inventory and on the variation of the inventory in the carbon in leach tanks of the Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited Lapa concentrator. Results of the analysis demonstrate that the inventory is measured with ±10% reproducibility, while the variation of inventory used for mass balance is known with ±300% reproducibility.INTRODUCTIONThe preparation of a production report implies to reconcile measured data with the constraint of material balance over the considered period of production. The sampling and data reconciliation problems were recently reviewed by Morrison (2008) and Jansen (2009a; 2009b). Typically a production report is prepared to cover a period over which the mass conservation hypothesis can be considered valid. In gold processing plants, the change of inventory can seldom be neglected and plays a significant role in material balance calculations. This is particularly true for circuits using carbon adsorption, where the complete cycle of carbon is measured in days.In a 2000 t/d gold ore processing plant, the inventory can be as large as 140 000 g of gold in gravity concentrator bins, carbon in pulp tanks and in the electrolysis circuit. This is equivalent to the mass of gold that fed the circuit during 10 days of operation with 7 g/t feed assays. The change of inventory may therefore strongly impact the production figures and especially the plant recovery at the end of a week or a month. Despite the financial impact associated with gold inventory, few publications are devoted to the subject. Bruington (1991) and Morrison (2008) discussed the problem and stressed the need for the development of reliable methods to estimate the gold inventory in carbon in pulp or carbon in leach circuits."

"Concentrate dewatering operations have a significant influence on the economics of base metal beneficiation. The expenditures f or energy and labour per tonne of product are high. The relatively low efficiencies of standard techniques present inducements for process modifications. Development efforts at several Noranda concentrators led to process changes which improved productivity, namely, agitated pulp storage in large vessels, process automation and pressure filtration.IntroductionA program was initiated in 1968 with the aim of improving utilization of manpower and equipment in dewatering operations. The following considerations motivated us in this effort: Firstly, filters and dryers had traditionally been operated continuously and in step with grinding and flotation circuits. The demand for labour and equipment operating time was fixed and was not determined by the rate of concentrate production.Secondly, dewatering equipment had usually been designed to handle the concentrate tonnages which were produced when mill feed grades were high; therefore the equipment operated at less than capacity when treating ores of average metal content. The first goal was the separation of the flotation process from concentrate dewatering by development of a practical storage system for concentrate pulps . A second objective was the gradual introduction of dependable automatic controls. The steep increase in energy costs after 1973 added urgency to the search for dewatering processes which were highly energy efficient."

Cemented Paste Backfill has proven to be of critical importance to the operation of a number of Canadian mines, primarily due to the rapid backfilling rate this method permits. In order to improve the efficiency of this backfill system (i.e. optimize binder contents, fill fence design, and the employment of two stage filling strategies) there is a requirement to better understand its geomechanical behaviour. In response, in-situ experiments have been conducted in long-hole stopes to quantify the evolution of total earth pressures and pore pressures at a series of instrumented points within both the core of the backfill and close to fill fences. The deflection of fill fences as a result of paste loading has been measured and additional instrumentation has also been employed to measure cement hydration, negative pore pressures, and blasting induced vibrations within fresh and cured paste backfill. Installing geotechnical instrumentation within an open long-hole stope can be an extremely complex procedure and this paper details the methods that have been successfully employed. Preliminary results are presented, and the pressures induced by backfill with differing binder contents, at a number of different in-stope locations are considered.

"The natural and man-made realities on either side of the Atlantic are different. Therefore, a large part of the other side' s knowledge and experience cannot be transferred easily. In the following, the author will attempt to describe some of those developments in the German hard coal industry which may be of particular interest to readers on this side of the Atlantic.The area of the Federal Republic is quite small, especially if compared with a country as large as Canada. On a territory the size of the maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Germany holds coal reserves roughly corresponding to the total Canadian reserves. More than 20 billion tons of hard coal down to a depth of 1500 m, and more than 30 billion ton s of brown coal of lignite are technically and economically extractable acording to current technology.However, not only are Germany's coal resources more concentrated; the country is also densely populated, and there are dense networks of railroads and highways All components of the so-called infra-structure are available everywhere, be it electricity, any machinery or personnel. Public opinion is likely in favour of an increased utilization of coal.The coal industry is well developed through a long evolution covering centuries. As a consequence, there is an effective and intensive cooperation of numerous bodies and institutions concerned with coal mining, from government agencies including the inspectorate to suppliers, trade union s, producing companies, to jointly operated management and research organizations. In the Federal Republic, hard coal is mined in deep mines only, and lignite in general, only from open-cast pits. There is a complete organizational and geographic separation of hard and brown coal in Germany. Because the Federal Republic holds only insignificant mineral oil and very little natural gas deposits, coal is essentially the only and consequently the most valuable source of energy."

The primary crusher is a key component in the comminution process applied in open pit mines. A collaborative research project between the University of British Columbia and Highland Valley Copper (HVC) was conducted aiming at understanding gyratory crusher liner wear in the overall context of the crushing process. This paper presents an analysis methodology applied to data collected using a laser-based tool for assessing wear in gyratory crushers. Data from the wear measurements was correlated with crusher production information such as current draw and throughput. As a result of the knowledge developed during this work, an innovative way to evaluate crusher liner profiles was created and new mantle profiles were designed. This led to a reformulation of HVC’s standard liner management policy with a resulting estimated annual savings of 13% in total crusher liner cost and a 15% reduction in liner replacement downtime.

"At the moment climatic conditions are a primary problem of the exploitation of copper ore. The efficiency of preventive actions in order to improve climatic conditions is connected with the knowledge of changing air in underground excavations. This article demonstrates the analysis of types of ventilation dams which are used in sealing abandoned areas on the maintenance of climatic working conditions in excavations has been conducted at the exploitation in Polish copper ore mines. INTRODUCTION The basis for mining activity performed by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. is mining copper ores from the deposit lying at depths between 600 and 1,200 m below ground level. Activity has continued since 1963. The copper ore deposit is mined in ‘Lubin’, ‘Rudna’ and ‘Polkowice-Sieroszowice’ mines, where difficult climatic conditions occur. The major factor moulding the climatic conditions in headings is the original temperature of rocks, being the result of geological conditions of the lying of the deposit and the existing geothermal degree. In the faces of present opening-out and preparatory headings, driven from mining areas of ‘Rudna’ and ‘Polkowice-Sieroszowice’ mines in order to open out deeper parts of the deposit, the original temperature of rocks reaches 45°C. Excluding the original temperature of rocks, the following are additional factors affecting the deterioration in the climatic conditions: • thermal properties of deposit rocks, • employed room-and-pillar mining systems, which are characterised by a large surface of exposure of rocks, • using self-propelled mining machines with diesel drive, • a high concentration of mining works, • setting up high-power electrical equipment in headings, • complex structures of mine ventilation networks, • a limited number of ventilating shafts, • constantly longer air-transport routes, • a significant accumulation of water increasing the humidity of supplied air. According to the valid Polish provisions (§21, 2013), the primary criterion of assessment of a climatic hazard is the occurrence at a workstation in an underground mining heading of an equivalent climate temperature of more than 26°C, which temperature is determined according to the following dependence:"

"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments. A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including respectable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects. Reflecting the observation of a wide range of views regarding the subject of inflation, this paper will-address the impact of five different approaches to inflation on the evaluation of a single Canadian mining project."

"The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

"The complexity of a modern flotation circuit makes it susceptible to disturbances such as changes in feed, ore mineralogy, equipment degradation, poor measurements and faulty instruments. Good measurements and a robust control system are critical to create and maintain a stable and optimum flotation process.This paper focuses on the development and implementation of process control applications in the flotation circuits at Xstrata Nickel’s Strathcona Mill ( referred to as the mill hereafter ) in Sudbury, Ontario. Following the path of ‘stabilize-improve-optimize’, basic controls to stabilize process variables such as flotation cell pulp level, air and reagent addition rates, cleaning-column feed and wash-water rates have been established. Factors such as best practice in pulp level and valve position measurement, feedforward control and the application of an appropriate control philosophy, have contributed to the significant reduction in process variability. For instance, standard deviation reduction of 79% for the Ni impurity in the column Cu concentrate grade was experienced and is shown. The variability reduction of the flotation circuits’ key process-variables paves the way to further improve and optimize flotation performance. A grams-per-metal unit reagent addition control scheme has been improved upon, particularly for different operating scenarios and better robustness. In addition, following significant stabilization of the primary controls and columns feedrates, Cu/Ni separation cleaning-column bias-control (cascaded to the wash-water rate) and hold-up control (cascaded to air flowrate) have been developed and tested. This strategy – from stabilization to optimization - is expected to achieve a more consistent control of final concentrate grades and improve recoveries.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is considered the most important and value-added process in the milling metallurgical plant and is still undergoing continuous evolution to treat greater tonnage and different ores (Wills, 2006). Starting over three decades ago, with the advent of on-line slurry content analysis devices, flotation automatic control has received persistent interest and a large number of applications have been reported (Thwaites, 1983, 1986 ; Mckee, 1991). Bergh and Yianatos (2011) reviewed different aspects of process control in flotation circuits and have evaluated the applicability of model predictive control to the process. Mckee (1991) analyzed the difficulty in developing lasting/robust process control applications for flotation circuits and stated that the path of stabilization-refinement-optimization would more likely lead to successful flotation circuit process control. Best practice on column process control was discussed by Bouchard, etc. where a multi-layered approach was proposed, provided that the measurement of column process variables ( i.e. bias, froth depth, hold-up, etc. ) are measured reliably (Bouchard & Thwaites, 2008). Wills (2006) stated that the best practice for flotation automatic control starts with fulfilling basic control objectives, such as stabilized flotation cell level, air flow, pH, reagent flow etc., before considering more advanced, or even optimal, control of metallurgical targets, which are more closely linked to economic performance."

"Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) is a Canadian-based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico. In 2010, AEM produced its first gold bar in Nunavut, Canada as it started its Meadowbank operation. It is also in 2010 that AEM acquired the Meliadine property, which is located 25 Km North of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The Meliadine gold project is an advanced exploration and development project, comprising of workers camp, underground and open mines, a processing plant and all the services facilities and infrastructures required to sustain operation in a remote arctic environment.Pending formal board approval, production start-up is planned for Q3 2019 and the process flowsheet is based on an ore processing rate of 1.1 million dry tonnes per year (3,000 dry tonnes per day from underground mining) for the first three years, and 1.98 million dry tonnes per year (5,000 dry tonnes per day from both underground and open pit mining) for the remaining years at 92% process plant availability.To the end of 2015, more than 45 metallurgical test programs have been conducted on the Meliadine deposits. Based on the results of these programs, an optimal gold circuit was designed, comprising of crushing, grinding, gravity separation and cyanide leaching with a carbon-in-leach circuit (CIL), followed by cyanide destruction and filtration of the tails for dry stacking. The assumed gold recovery for the reserves averages 96.0% at a 7.44-g/t gold average mill feed grade."

However, with cyclones the term is usually used for the fitting which is attached there to control discharge of the underflow stream.Note that the cyclone need not be so mounted that the apex is the lowest point, although that is the most common method. The Intec Process is a generic process for the production of pure base metals and precious metals from sulphides concentrates derived from copper, nickel, zinc and lead ores. The development program for the Intec Process initially focussed on the treatment of copper concentrates, (the ?Intec Copper Process?), and more recently of zinc concentrates, (?the Intec Zinc Process?). Developed and proven in Sydney, Australia at a cost of US$15m over the last ten years, the Intec Copper Process is now ready for commercial application. The knowledge gained during the development of the Intec Copper Process has been applied to the Intec Zinc Process, which utilises the same basic chemistry to produce high purity zinc ingot from metallurgically complex zinc sulphide concentrates containing lead, copper, iron, silver and gold. The demonstrated ability of the Intec Zinc Process to treat low grade mixed zinc/lead/copper concentrates, including those with high iron and manganese levels, holds out the real prospect of overcoming major metallurgical hurdles that have long affected the zinc industry. The Intec Zinc Process consists of the three consecutive circuits of leaching, purification and electrowinning. The leach circuit is of single stage configuration with a series of reactors to which concentrate and lixiviant are fed. Purification consists of cementation and precipitation by pH adjustment. Electrowinning employs an electrolytic cell very similar in design to that of the Intec Copper Process, but differs in that a conventional plate cathode is produced. During electrowinning, the same mixed halide species (BrCl2 -, HalexTM) that is integral to the Intec Copper Process is generated in solution at the anode and exhibits powerful leaching characteristics capable of directly leaching the sulphide concentrate feed. The need to roast the concentrate prior to leaching, as is practised in the conventional Roast/Leach/Electrowin (RLE) process, is thus eliminated whilst a range of by-products (notably lead, copper and precious metals) can be extracted in the simple, single-stage leach. This paper describes the Intec Zinc Process; the technology, predicted economics and its environmental aspects.

"AbstractAttention is drawn to the ventilation problems arising from the use of diesel vehicles underground, especially in view of the fact that diesel fumes in combination with other pollutants may be more harmful than diesel fumes alone or the other pollutants alone.Means for minimizing the harmful effects of using diesels underground are listed, and the quantities of air' required in mines in which diesel-powered vehicles are used are discussed. Mines are classified in three categories on the basis of severity of ventilation problems, and statistics are given for these categories.Details of the various components contributing to total ventilation needs are given, and the ventilation needs of individual mines in the three categories are listed. A description is given of the principles according to which main ventilation coursing is planned and the selection and siting of main fans is discussed.General Considerations in the Use of Diesel-Engined Vehicles UndergroundIN ORDER to reduce physiological hazards, present and latent, to workers in mines in which extensive use is made of diesel equipment underground, it is important that mine ventilation systems reduce the concentrations of rock dust, diesel fumes and particulate matter as rapidly as possible to an acceptable level in all parts of the mine.There is some evidence that the long-term effects of a combination of the above pollutants are greater than those of anyone of them alone, which makes the problem even more pressing."

The existence of quarries near or even within the boundaries of urban centres is the cause of many environmental problems, despite their significant contribution to the cities’ development. Hence, the question arises as to how quarrying activities can be compromised within the spirit of sustainable development in big cities. In the case of Athens, two dominant, though opposite opinions have been formed. The first argues that all quarries must be forced to suspend their activities as soon as possible; the second presses for the continuation of quarrying. Consequently, the question is transposed on the dilemma between improved environmental conditions and economic development. This paper demonstrates that if a complete redesign is employed to specific, nonvisible quarrying sites, the continuation of quarrying activities is acceptable. It is a good compromise between the economical demand and environmental protection.

"High demand for metals is driving the exploitation of lower grade and more complex orebodies. These projects are often the initiatives of junior mining companies with limited financial resources. In addition, existing operations seek to enhance revenue from their existing metal recovery operations, through the production of value-added by-product metals and chemicals. Typically, hydrometallurgical circuits, often with novel chemistry, are required to exploit these new ores, to produce the multiplicity of products that will make a marginal project economical, or to increase the product range of an existing operation. Often, the mineral processing engineer is given the task of coordinating the development of a back-end hydrometallurgical flowsheet for their mineral processing project. This paper discusses the objectives that companies have when they commission the operation of a hydrometallurgical pilot plant. The paper goes on to enumerate some of the principal differences between mineral processing and hydrometallurgical pilot plants and the effect these have on the design, operability and potential pilot plant outcomes. Important factors include working with chemically reactive solutions and pulps, elevated temperatures operation, changing rheological properties of slurries, the complexity of integrated circuit flowsheets with long hold-up times and multiple recycle streams, and the need in some cases for extreme attention to purity and cleanliness. Examples will be drawn from the extensive experience base of SGS Minerals Services at the Lakefield site, in piloting both mineral processing and hydrometallurgical process flowsheets.INTRODUCTIONWe are currently experiencing a period of strong growth in the demand for metals. This in turn is turning the spotlight on a great many smaller mining companies and mining promotion ventures trying to tap into the rising metal demand. Some of these companies want to develop their properties and recover metals while others want to develop to the point that a major company will take an interest, or in some cases buy them out completely.With the heightened interest in metals, many orebodies that have been known about for years are being reconsidered for exploitation. Often, the reason they have not been developed to date is because of difficult metallurgy and marginal grades leading to marginal economic viability. In both cases the key that unlocks the resources is often the application of a novel metallurgical flowsheet, often a hydrometallurgical flowsheet."

"IntroductionCanada has been one of the world's leading producers of uranium since atomic energy first became of practical importance in 1942. Indeed, prior to this time, between 1933 and 1940, Canada produced significant amounts of pitchblende, as a source of radium, from the Eldorado Mine at Great Bear Lake*.Uranium was first reported in Canada, however, in the middle of the 19th Century in the vicinity of Theano Point on Lake Superior north of Sault Ste. Marie. In the early 1900s, uranium-bearing minerals were reported in Quebec north of the St. Lawrence River and in pegmatites in Quebec and eastern Ontario. In 1930, G.A. LaBine and E.C. St. Paul visited an occurrence of cobalt reported by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1900, and brought the Eldorado Mine into production in 1933, as noted above, producing, in the main, silver and pitchblende.In 1942, developments in atomic energy were such that the Government of Canada, at the behest of Great Britain and the United States, requested that Eldorado, which had been closed in 1940, be re-opened to produce uranium for the Manhattan Project. In September, 1943, all discoveries of radioactive minerals were reserved to the Crown and their staking by private interests was banned. In January, 1944, the government nationalized Eldorado and formed a Crown corporation, the present Eldorado Nuclear Limited, to take over the assets. That year marked the formal beginning of uranium exploration in Canada.The Period 1944 to 1948In 1944, the Crown Corporation and the Geological Survey of Canada began exploring for uranium deposits, largely in the areas of Great Bear Lake and Lake Athabasca. In that year, A. W. Joliffe of the Survey visited properties on the north shore of Lake Athabasca near Beaverlodge Lake and recommended that Eldorado acquire claims in the area. In 1946, P. St. Louis and E. Laurum, prospectors working for Eldorado, found the pitchblende veinlets that led to the Ace Mine. Shaft sinking began in 1951, and production, through a carbonate leach plant, began in 1953.Continuing drilling on the Eldorado claims led to the Verna ore bodies, some 6,000 feet northeast of Ace, on which shaft sinking started in 1954."

Diesel locomotives for underground haulage have been used in coal mines in Continental Europe for twenty-five years or more. In Great Britain, it was not until 1935 that permission was granted to use them in gassy coal mines, but since that time they have been employed in increasing numbers both in gassy and non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Their use underground in coal mines in the United States is still prohibited and the same was the case in Canada until 1946, when permission was granted to operate a Diesel underground in the Adanac mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, at Bellevue, Alberta. The locomotive used here is a 50 h.p. Hunslet Mark II. More recently, a 100 h.p. Diesel was placed in operation for underground haulage at No. 18 Colliery of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, in the Sydney coalfield, N. S. Thus, on this continent, Canada has been a pioneer in the use of these locomotives underground in coal mines and there is no doubt that more and more of them will be employed as time goes on. We feel, therefore, that the following notes concerning their design and performance, which we have received from the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will be of interest to our members.
