"OPENING REMARKS Yesterday and today we have heard some very interesting papers on operating matters and some of you are probably wondering what we are now doing talking about Communications in Plant Design. Let me tell you! Before the techniques we have heard being discussed can be used, there has to be a properly operating plant. It is certainly a fact that many mineral processing plants achieve only limited success and a number of them can even be said to be failures. Some of you sitting here are probably living with operating problems that are clue to errors in the design.If the histories of these problem plants are examined, it will be found that in many cases, the necessary skills were available during the period of the plant design. There was extensive operating know¬ledge together with a full range of project expertise. Why then the failures? In a substantial number of cases it can be traced to the old, old problem of communications. As plants get bigger, money costs more and smooth startups become more important, it becomes less and less economic to fix up any design errors during plant operations.During our careers in mineral processing, nearly all of us will be involved in at least one plant design and I feel that it is as well if we understand some of these communication difficulties that can lead to a problem plant. There is little point in us being experts in mineral processing if the knowledge we have acquired doesn't somehow get incorporated into the plant.I would, therefore, like to present this short paper that mentions a few of the significant communication problems that can occur during the design of mining and mineral processing plants, together with some thoughts on answers to these problems."

The major fluorite producer in British Columbia was the Rock Candy Mine, inactive since 1942. Other deposits of economic interest include the Rexspar deposit, in which fluorite is associated with uranium and rare earth mineralization, and the Eaglet and Liard River occurrences. THE former Rock Candy fluorite mine, located 26 km north of Grand Forks, is the only major past producer of fluorite in British Columbia. The deposit was in production from 1918 to 1929 and again in 1942; total output was about 36,000 tonnes with average grade between 22 and 32 per cent CaF2. The fluorite body occupies a steeply-dipping vein structure, approximately 175 m long and up to 12 m wide, in porphyritic syenite. The chief vein-filling minerals are quartz and fluorite with local small len ses of barite. Fluorite content decreases with depth and the deposit becomes silicified. The Rexspar (or Birch Island) fluorite deposit is located 130 km north of Kamloops. The deposit is complex with rare earth elements and high uranium values, but !1uorite mineralization forms an independent zone adjacent to the uranium orebodies. Fluorite is present as fine-grained impregnations and as breccia cement in strongly schistose or brecciated alkali feld spar porphyry. Reported reserves are 1,088,000 tonnes of 22 per cent CaF2 or 450,000 tonnes of 29 per cent CaF2. 268 Another potential deposit of fluorite is Eaglet, situated on the north side of Quesnel Lake. Fluorite occurs as a stock work with scattered veins and irregular lenses up to 20 centimetres wide and as impregnations in altered Proterozoic Kaza Group feld spathic gneiss over an area of 1,500 metres by 500 metres. To date (1983) approximately $2 million have been spent on the exploration of this property and reserves of 18.8 mimon tonnes grading 11.59 per cent CaF2 have been outlined . A group of significant occurrences is known from north of Liard River Hot Springs Park , where fluorite occurs in small zones up to 17 m thick along the interface between Middle Devonian Dunedin Formation limestone and Middle Devonian to Mississippian Besa River Formation argillite. Fluorite, associated with witherite, barytocalcite and barite, is present as replacement bodies, breccia fillings and minor veins.

"Wollastonite (CaSiO3]) is experiencing increased usage in a variety of applications, such as fillers in paints, plastics and resins, as an extender to replace both non-fibrous and fibrous materials (e.g. asbestos), and in the glass and ceramics industries. Significant new deposits of wollastonite have been discovered in Marmora Township, about 175 km northeast of Toronto. The geological setting of these large-tonnage. High grade deposits has recently been investigated to assess the possibility of their development. A preliminary study of the chemistry, as well as the mineralogy of six occurrences is presented. Based upon this information, it is suggested that several of the deposits have an excellent development potential.INTRODUCTIONWollastonite is an anhydrous calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3), with a theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2; the calcium may be partially replaced by iron, manganese, magnesium, and strontium. Commonly associated minerals include diopside, tremolite, idocrase, grossularite andradite, quartz, and calcite. Wollastonite forms as a contact metamorphic mineral within impure limestone near intrusive bodies of granite, or other acidic rocks, as the result of metasomatism of calcareous sedimentary rocks, or by the crystallization of certain magmas (e.g. carbonautes). Generally, the reaction of calcite with silica to produce wollastonite occurs when siliceous hydrothermal fluids from a granitic intrusion or primary silica in the limestone/marble react with calcite in limestone at temperatures between 450°C and 600°C."

While the general public has little knowledge or appreciation of either the mining or explosives industries, modern civilization could not exist without them. They are to-day the key industries of the world. In common with many other industries the demands of the war greatly stimulated the production of explosives and the research necessary for such increased production. Production, supplies of all kinds, munitions of all sorts and then again production, practically regardless of cost, were the first reactions to the imperative war demands of the governments of the world. Following the war there was a momentary lull, then first gradually but with quickening acceleration, particularly in a recent slump, the situation was reversed - cost and not production was the dominant factor. Some industries readjusted themselves very rapidly and completely. Others were but partially re-adjusted and others again only carried out the process of deflation in certain departments. The explosives industry in Canada has not only thoroughly deflated itself, but has learned to apply to commercial disruptive explosives, the best, most efficient and most economical methods of manufacturing developed during the war. As a consequence, miners have at their disposal to-day better and more different kinds of compressed energy than ever before in all the long history of mining.

THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. "Mining of low grade deposits along with the necessity to design and operate process plants requiring high throughputs presents unique metallurgical environmental and sustainability challenges that need to be addressed to reduce project risks, improve project economics and to sustain the profitability of operations over the life-of-mine.Some of the key challenges include poor recovery of valuables and concentrate quality issues due to complex mineralogy and high ore variability, water scarcity and quality issues, high energy costs, complex environmental issues including tailings management, high capital and operating costs, worldwide constraints on resource availability, complicated regulations in emerging economies, changing demographics of mining operations with ever-changing cultural or community issues and the urgent need for a better assessment of project viability to reflect the dynamics of present mining scenario. Developing breakthrough solutions to these problems is the key to success of any new project and maintaining profitability of a mining operation. An integrated multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving is crucial along with the need for a more lateral thinking, strategic partnerships and collaboration involving the right players. This paper presents some of the key findings based on experiences from a large number of challenging projects and operations focused on solving complex metallurgical problems.IntroductionThere is a plethora of challenges in developing new ore bodies. The metallurgical complexity of these deposits has increased significantly due to the need for mining lower grade ores along with the presence of deleterious elements that have environmental and processing implications. In addition, many of the mining projects are capital intensive due to high throughput requirements to be economical along with the need for building infrastructure due to remote locations, while operating costs steadily increase due to high reagent, energy and labour costs, increased state royalties and community obligations, to name a few of the key factors. There is also scarcity of water in many regions requiring the use of sea water or brackish water, which has both environmental and metallurgical implications. The shortage of qualified technical manpower adds significantly to the woes of many mining companies. Considering these multiplicity of challenges, it has become imperative for many mining companies to be innovative in addressing these issues."

Cobalt mostly occurs as a minor, but valuable, constituent in most nickel and a few copper ores, however it is not generally found alone in commercially viable deposits. Its concentration and extraction are therefore intimately linked to the recovery of the primary metals and the major task for the metallurgist is to extract cobalt of commercial grade from a much larger mass of either nickel or copper and sometimes both. With a particular focus on Vale Inco?s operations, this paper provides a brief overview of the mineralogy of the main deposits being currently exploited that contain cobalt as a co or by-product. The concentration and then extraction to metal are reviewed and some advances released into the public domain are discussed.

"There are a number of important dates that must be disclosed when a Qualified Person (QP) is preparing a technical report for securities purposes. The dates are discussed in NI43-101 and the Form of the Technical Report, NI43-101F1. •,Effective date of the technical report •,Possible revision date of the report •,Effective date of mineral resources and mineral reserves •,Date of the personal inspection (site visit) •,Signature date of the date report (execution date) •,Date of the certificate of the QP •,Date of the consent of the QP The effective date of the report is basically the cut-off date for the information that is included in the technical report. The effective date should be close to the signature date. If there is too long a period between these dates, the QP runs the risk of new material information becoming available and then the technical report would no longer be current. The effective date is disclosed on the title page of the report and on the signature page. If a technical report needs to be revised to correct problems or disclosure deficiencies identified by the regulators, the QP will normally need to include a revision date on the title page of the report to distinguish the revised version from the original version. In these circumstances, the regulators will request that the original date of the report remain on the title page and the revised date will be below it. When a technical report must be revised, the QP must resign and date the signature page of the report and provide a new certificate and consent."

Sev_eral dozen si lica occurrences have been reported from various parts of Brit ish Columbia. Some represent hydrothermal veins or parts of pegmatite bodies; other are recrystall ized sandstones. Several vein type deposits were mined for smelter flux and as a source of white chips for stucco dash and simi lar products. Some quartzites were studied as potential sources of high-grade silica for ferrosilicon and silicon metal production. The province's only production of silica for ferrosilicon has come from a pegmatitic quartz plug near Oliver in southern British Columbia. Its reserves are now practically depleted.

Corus Umuiden, formerly Hoogovens, was the first steel plant in Europe after Voest to introduce oxygen steelmaking. In the decision-making process contacts with Dofasco in Canada about the production of formability steel grades were crucial. In developing oxygen (LD-) steelmaking high liquid steel output rates had to be combined with accurate process control. For ingot casting static models with input control and sampling during interrupted blowing were sufficient to deliver liquid steel within the required carbon, phosphorus, sulphur and temperature windows. Computers were introduced to perform the complicated charge calculations. Continuous casting called for strict control of composition and temperature at process end point and made predictable timing crucial. Dynamic control was introduced based upon sub lance measurements and waste gas analysis. Reliable disposable measurement sensors were developed in a concerted international action. Dissolved oxygen at blow end deteriorated the quality of low carbon aluminium killed steel grades. Blowing gases through the converter bottom improved process kinetics, resulting in lower carbon-oxygen products, yield increase and better phosphorus removal and generated new families of hybrid blowing processes. Introduction of secondary metallurgy facilities such as argon stirring stations, vacuum degassers and ladle furnaces relieved the demands for strict BOF end point control. Desulphurisation of hot metal became standard practice. In regions with scrap shortage hot metal desiliconisation followed by dephosphorisation, was introduced in the blast furnace cast house and hot metal transfer ladles. Later redundant converter vessels were used for pre-treatment, resulting in a two-stage process. The fundamentals of oxygen steelmaking are described and a vision on the future is presented.

"The ore-element patterns in regional lake sediment geochemical survey data from four areas of Newfoundland containing granite-related mineralization reveal characteristics which can be used to identify mineralized granitoids. The St. Lawrence Granite with its fluorite deposits, the Ackley Granite with molybdenite mineralization, the Grey River tungsten lodes and the newly discovered Mo- W mineralization at Granite Lake, Central Newfoundland, have all been included in the regional lake sediment geochemical surveys, which now cover about 90,000 km2 of the Island of Newfoundland. The lake sediments over these mineralized granites show diagnostically high values of Mo, F, Pb, Zn and, in three of the four cases, U, together with locally high Ag and Cu values. Furthermore, these ore-metals display a distinctive zoning pattern about the intrusives, which can be related to the classical ore-metal zoning patterns developed about many types of mineralized granitoids.IntroductionGranitoids in Eastern Canada are receiving renewed interest as potential hosts of tin, tungsten, uranium and related mineralization. Although a number of mineral deposits and showings have been known from a few granites (sensu lato) in the region for many years, granites had generally received little attention as potential hosts of metallic mineralization until the recent resurgence in interest in the mineral potential of these rocks. In Newfoundland, where granitoid rocks underlie about 30070 of the land area, petrologic data are available from some granites, particularly those in eastern Newfoundland (Strong et al., 1974; Strong, 1980), but in southern and southwestern Newfoundland the data base is sparse, and indeed in many cases individual plutons are not delineated on the geological maps of the area . Most of the available data on Newfoundland graniotolds have been summarized by Strong (1980), who gives a general assessment of their mineral potential by comparing their physical, mineralogical and petrochemical attributes with mineralized granites elsewhere in the world."

"THIS IS THE THIRD of the consecutive Annual Forums on Grinding that were instituted by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The first was on the subject of Ball Milling (Transactions, Volume LX, 1957) and the second on The N on-Cataracting Ball Mill (Trans-actions, Volume LXI, 1958). From the discussions at these forums it was evident that one of the most important factors affecting the efficiency of grinding is the shape of the liners. In order to make a study of liners in use, it was •decided to seek the co-operation of operators across the country by sending out questionnaires requesting basic information. Additionally, these operators were urged to set down briefly any pertinent information on the subject acquired through experience and experiments at their own particular plants. A compilation and analysis of these data were to form a basis for discussion at the Forum on Liners at the Annual Meeting in Montreal, April, 1959. The response of the milling fraternity to this solicitation was most gratifying, and clearly indicated the importance attached by the operators to the effect of liner design upon overall grinding performance."

"IntroductionTHE PROPERTY of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines. Limited. comprises fifty-eight claims located between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships of the Patricia portion of the District of Kenora. The mine is seven miles •by road from the hamlet of Red Lake. This latter centre is .connected to the Trans-Canada Highway at Vermillion Bay, Ontario, by provincial highway No. 105 which has a total length of one hundred and thirteen miles.The Madsen property went into production on August 11th, 1938, with a milling plant rated at 300 tons per twenty-four hours. Changes made in the crushing plant during October, 1938, allowed a •finer feed to be delivered to the mill and increased the milling •capacity to 400 tons per twenty-four hours. During 1948, steps were taken to add an additional 400-ton capacity unit to the milling plant. This latter work was completed by May, 1949, giving the present total milling .capacity of 800 tons per twenty-four hours.It was realized in the early 1940's that, eventually, considerable material suitable for backfilling in the mine would be required. As there were no large deposits of gravel or sand anywhere near the mine, officials of the Company considered it advisable to investigate the feasibility of using mill tailings for mine •backfill. Since Madsen mill tailings contain approximately 80 per •cent of minus-200-mesh material, it was not considered practical to use them for underground backfill without first removing the finer material. as the slimes present in a product of this fineness would without doubt preclude any drainage whatsoever. Table I gives a sizing analysis of Madsen mill tailings and Table II a quantitative chemical analysis of the ore."

"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

"Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Le gisement est situé dans une séquence de tufs felsiques à grains fins interlités de roches sédimentaires (membre de Little Falls, au sommet de la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. La partie massive et la semimassive s’étendent du nord au sud sur 525 m et ont un pendage de ~45°E; le gisement est continu sur 600 m en angle de chute et son épaisseur varie de 2 à 20 m. L’importance de cette découverte tient à ce qu’elle est un exemple d’un gisement à fort tonnage nouvellement découvert à une faible profondeur dans un camp minier mature, i.e., un camp ou l’on ne croyait plus qu’il était possible de trouver un gisement près de la surface. Ceci ouvre la porte à la possibilité d’autres découvertes dans cette partie du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. L’Ovoïde comprend trois types de minerai. "Phase equilibria in the ‘Cu2O’-‘Fe2O3’-SiO2 system, the base slag system in copper production, were recently determined. However, the addition of MgO, commonly present in the slag, drastically changes the phase equilibria in this system. The present study focuses on the phase equilibria in the ‘Cu2O’-‘Fe2O3’-MgO-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic copper.Recently, an experimental procedure has been developed that resolved a number of experimental difficulties. This procedure has been successfully applied to characterise several complex industrial copper slags. It includes a high-temperature equilibration followed by rapid quenching and electron probe X-ray micro-analysis (EPMA). The methodology was adapted to the present system and used to determine the liquidus at SiO2 saturation and in contact with high-MgO phases in between 1100 and 1250 °C in Cu2Orich slags.The results indicate a maximum solubility of MgO in the system at 1200 °C of 5 wt%. The boundary line between tridymite and spinel lies 3-4 wt% closer to the SiO2 apex for every 2 wt% MgO added. These new data on the high-copper slags are important for optimisation of the direct-to blister"
