"Stillwater Mining commenced mining operations at Nye, Montana in 1987 for the recovery of platinum and palladium. Exploration identified that the J-M Reef extended for 43 km. In 1998 Stillwater Mining made the decision to develop the East Boulder mine complex, located approximately 13 miles from the Stillwater mine complex at Nye, to increase production. This paper describes the design, construction, and start-up of the East Boulder process plant.INTRODUCTIONStillwater Mining Company have been producing Platinum and Palladium from their Nye, Montana operations since 1987. The mine production from Nye had been increased in stages with mine production being delivered through several portals and one vertical shaft.The deposit is narrow veined which prevents the application of bulk mining methods and thus limits the production capabilities.In order to increase the production of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) Stillwater made the decision to access the ore from the J-M Reef from the East Boulder site. The East Boulder mine site is located about 21 km (13 miles) from Nye, however as shown in Figure 1, the travel distance is closer to 188 km (114 miles). Distance, on strike, and space availability at Nye precluded the expansion of the Nye concentrator to handle the increased mining rate and supported the decision to install a new concentrator at East Boulder."

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. Ces travaux, financés par la division minière de CAMIRO et la mine Brunswick, consistaient à tirer violemment sans aucune face libre, et à laisser en place, un pilier de sulphures massifs au sud-ouest du niveau 1000 m. Cet article décrit l’approche et la démarche conceptuelle utilisées pour tenter de maximiser les fractures dans le pilier visé, tout en minimisant les dommages collatéraux à des infrastructures critiques se trouvant dans les environs immédiats. Les opérations de chargement des explosifs et les résultats du tir — en termes de ses performances, telles qu’évaluées par de l’équipement de monitoring rapproché des vibrations de tir, d’observations visuelles, et de son impact sur les contraintes de terrain locales — sont également discutés."

The application of titanium alloys is limited to 550°C due to their poor oxidation resistance. It is known that the addition of niobium decelerates the oxidation of titanium alloys whereas elements like vanadium do not improve titanium’s oxidation resistance. The underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. In the present study, different binary titanium-niobium and titanium-vanadium alloys as well as commercially pure titanium were investigated. Oxidation experiments were carried out at 800°C up to 288 hours followed by metallographic analyses to study the oxide layer morphology as well as the microstructure at the interface. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mappings were used to identify possible changes in the distribution of the alloying elements. In addition, micro-focused hard X-ray experiments were performed to layer-wise analyse the phase composition in selected samples. As expected, the niobium containing alloys show a better oxidation performance compared to commercially pure titanium and the titanium-vanadium alloys. The oxide layer consisted of TiO2 and Ti2O3. Depending of the niobium content, a niobium-rich layer developed below the metal-oxide-interface minimising oxygen diffusion into the titanium matrix. Based on these results, the minimal niobium content needed for improved oxidation resistance was identified so that alloys of technical relevance can now be developed.

Ground source heat pumps are used to heat or cool building and heat water supply. Such heat pumps use the earth as a heat source or sink to efficiently provide or store thermal energy. For example, a ground source heat pump typically requires less then a third of the electric or fossil fuel energy of a conventional heater. Ground source heat pumps could therefore help reduce the energy consumption of active mines where low-grade geothermal resources are abundant. In most heat pumps, water or a water-antifreeze mixture having a temperature ranging from -6.5 to 43.5 °C is circulated through a heat exchanger at a rate of 0.000033 to 0.000067 m3/s (2 to 4 L/min) for each kilowatt of heating/cooling capacity. The groundwater that is continuously pumped to drain mines could be used to operate heat pumps. Water feeding a heat pump can alternatively circulate in a close loop network of pipes buried underground or installed in a surface water body. Retention water ponds, tailings and waste dumps commonly found at active mine sites could provide excellent environments to install the close loop system. Further research will help take advantage of the unexploited geothermal resources associated with actives mines.

Synthetic fuel is a liquid hydrocarbon fuel synthesized from unconventional resources, such as tar sands, heavy oil, coal, and oil shale. These unconventional resources are immense and will be a major energy source for the 21st Century as the availability of conventional crude oil and natural gas declines. The authors review the available global distributions, production data, research frontiers, and current research organizations involved in tar sands, heavy oil, coal, and oil shale. Tar sands and heavy oil is mainly deposited in Canada, Venezuela, and the United States. Oil shale reserves are found in United States, Jordan, China and Australia. Coal occurs in United States, Russia, China, Canada, and Australia. Major research and development efforts are focused on reserves identification, transportation technologies, production cost modeling, bitumen extraction process improvements, coal liquefaction technologies, elimination of pollutants, greenhouse gases, and safeguarding human health and the environment. This review forms a major source for educating the public about these important energy sources, and the need to develop environmentally sound technologies and policies for their extraction.

The Lac Otelnuk iron property is located in the Province of Québec in the Northern Labrador Trough. The Labrador Trough is an extensive geosyncline of Proterozoic rocks, unconformably underlain by Archean gneisses. The Lac Otelnuk iron property hosts two significant magnetite iron-formation taconite deposits that outcrop, are sub-horizontal and are known to extend for at least 25 kilometres along strike. The host sedimentary rock package that includes a cherty iron formation is weakly metamorphosed to greenschist facies.

In order to derive the population distribution of gold nanoparticle morphologies as a function of size, highresolution electron microscopic (HREM) observations and structural analyses were done for over 4000 particles (3-18 nm) grown by an inert gas aggregation (IGA) source using helium. To obtain structural features threedimensionally and not to skip high-contrast images, twenty photos were taken for each particle by changing tilting angle of a specimen holder in combination with the through-focus procedure. For the reliable structural determinations, HREM images and their tilting sequences were directly compared with multislice-simulation results for icosahedral, decahedral and face-centered cubic morphologies, and finally the population distribution of each morphology was obtained as a function of size. In the present sample, icosahedral particles were dominantly populated over the whole observed size range and decahedral particles with non-spherical truncated bi-pyramid shape were secondly dominant. Even though a large number of sampling has been done, few crystalline particles were observed.

The QCM Mount-Wright mine and concentrator complex produces about 14 M tonnes of iron concentrate annually. Approximately 9.5 M tonnes of this concentrate are used to produce iron ore pellets at four different silica grades: Three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the realization of two projects where the acquisition of new process equipment led to an improved pellet plant iron recovery, a better flexibility and to lower operating costs as well as to the production of fine iron ore concentrate from the Port-Cartier tailings pond. Typical 4.8 % SiO2 concentrate is processed to achieve required pellet silica content. This is obtained with the aid of hindered settlers or hydraulic classifiers, screens, whims and, lately, spirals. The increasing demand for low silica iron ore products resulted in a greater need for upgrading. The Pellet Plant upgrading capacity being limited, more and more iron units were lost. Base on test works results and economic evaluations, QCM engineers figured out a way to increase efficiently their upgrading plant capacity and go back in the pond gather what has been lost in recent years of operation.

CHROME ore, which is used in Canada in the production of ferro-alloys, in a variety of refractories, and indirectly in many chemical industries, is both commercially important and scientifically interesting. The sight of chromium metal is familiar to all of us in the home, the office, the automobile. Chromium is synonymous with armaments: it is understood to be one of several essential metals in tanks, which played an important role in the defeat of France in the spring of 1940. Chromium, in other forms, comes into our daily lives by way of paint and leather, of the familiar green ginger-ale and beer bottles, and more indirectly in every pound of steel produced in the .Dominion. Necessary to our civilization in peace and war, the ores of chromium occur in many corners of the earth. This paper attempts to describe the chemical constitution of chrome ores, their world distribution, and the various chrome products and their industrial applications in Canada.

CONSIDERING the nature of this audience, I perhaps, in addressing you on the subject of air transportation as related to the mining industry, should speak with tongue in check or at least with some reservation. I know full well that many of you, veterans in the great mineral development in Canada, are perhaps more conversant with the overall aviation picture than I, for aviation to you has been the means to an end, and in many instances has been part and ?parcel in the success of your particular projects, in the form of the initial means of transport. I feel, however, that we in this room today have somewhat parallel geographic interests - yours in relation to what is in the ground, mine in the air - and also in the forests and in the streams - aviation, hunting, and fishing - things which have occupied my attention practically all my adult years. In the light of what has gone. before, and in view of present developments, I think you will agree with me when I say that I do not think there could be a more intriguing pursuit than playing a hand in rolling back Canada's tremendous northern frontiers, even if, at this stage, we have made but slight impression on the untold opportunities which lie in our wide-spread, undeveloped areas.

The attention of the world is being focused on the spectacular rise of elemental sulphur production in Alberta. In the short space of a decade, production has increased from less than 10,000 long tons, in 1952, to al-most 1,000,000 long tons in 1962. Moreover, 1963 sulphur production is expected to rise by 50 per cent to approximately 1,500,000 long tons, and further increases are forecast for ensuing years. The reason for this dramatic in-crease in elemental sulphur production, particularly in the last year or two, is that Alberta elemental sulphur is recovered in association with the production of sour natural gas. When very large volumes of natural gas began moving to U.S. markets in the latter part of 1961, the resultant increase in sour gas production led to a marked increase in the production of sulphur. Consequently, Canada, mainly on the strength of sulphur produced in Alberta, will soon become the second largest producer of sulphur in the Free World

"This paper describes the results of full-scale testing of several multi-layered wood crib configurations that were tested in the Bureau of Mines mine roof simulator in cooperation with the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory and Cape Breton Development Corporation of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Nine different crib configurations currently being used as wood packwall supports for advancing longwall applications in Canada were evaluated. Configuration parameters understudy included the aspect ratio (height-to-width relationship) and percentage of solid material used in the crib construction. Test results and generalized wood crib behaviour are discussed in detail. Recommendations are made concerning crib constructions to maximize strength and stability. A cost benefit analysis of multi-layered wood crib configurations is made. A comparison of laboratory results and underground observations of several wood packwall supports in the Sydney coalfield suggest in situ load capacity is less than that measured in laboratory testing. Reasons for the apparent decrease of in situ load bearing capability are described.IntroductionA cooperative effort was undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL) to evaluate the behaviour of gateside packing materials used in advancing longwall mining applications in the Sydney coalfield. As part of this effort, full-scale tests were conducted on wood packwall supports in the Bureau's 3-million pound (13.3 MN) active load frame.Nine different pack configurations were evaluated as part of this study. The wood packwall supports were multi-layered crib constructions from 6 in. (0.15 m) by 6 in. (0.15 m) cross section timbers using timber s 30 in. (0.75 m) and 60 in. (1.5 m) in length . The percentage of solid material in the crib constructions varied as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. A summary of crib constructions is provided in Table 1."

This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. One of them is Lac Dufault which was established in 1964.Lac Dufault is located 15 km north of Rouyn-Noranda, in what is known as Noranda volcanic centre, in northwestern Quebec. "The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. The introduction of high-nickel anodes to CCR in 2006 resulted in an increase of nickel in anodic slimes. Removal of the nickel in these slimes to below 3.0% is necessary in order to prevent slag viscosity problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical step. A lower specification of 0.5% was chosen in order to minimize Ni losses to the slag and to recover this nickel as NiSO4. A 2-stage autoclave process, which was patented by CCR in 1992, was chosen to treat the high nickel slimes. Laboratory and plant?scale tests were performed in 2004 in order to validate the results of this process with the present slimes. These results along with corrosion tests were used to design two brick-lined autoclaves. These autoclaves were installed in October 2006 and successfully commissioned within 8 weeks. A "Design of Experiment" test program was performed in 2006 on an alternative autoclave process that reversed the cycles in the patented process. The effects of temperature and acid content were modeled using the results. The alternative process will be validated with the new autoclaves.

The rate of new mineral discoveries in Canada has been declining in the last two decades. In response to the challenge and to stagnating investments in mining-related R&D, twenty Industry partners, supported by PDAC and Natural Resources Canada, established in 2010 the Exploration Innovation Consortium (EIC). This Consortium seeks to promote the discovery of new resources in Canada through coordination and sponsorship of industry-focused innovative and collaborative research and technology development, as well as training and education in mineral exploration. The two main themes of the integrated R&D program focus on exploration targeting in Deep and Mature Environments and in Remote and Covered Terranes.

A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. In particular, there has been a great deal of activity in connection with the pelletizing method of agglomeration. Magmatic-hydrothermal deposits rich in magnetite and/or hematite form a broad group that includes monometallic Fe deposits and polymetallic (mainly Cu and Au) deposits. They show a considerable variation in deposit characteristics, but share the genetic processes of magmatic differentiation and related hydrothermal activity in intermediate to felsic melts, and in some cases involve brines and/or meteoric waters during mineralization. They include several world-class deposits. They range in age from Proterozoic to Recent, and form important metallogenic districts in Scandinavian, Canadian, Brazilian and Australian Shields, Circum-Pacific regions, and in China, Iran and Turkey. Monometallic deposits have been important sources of iron in the past and still contain significant resources of the metal, e.g., the Kiirunavaara deposit in Sweden. The giant Olympic Dam Cu-Au-Ag-U-REE deposit was discovered in 1975, and since then explorationists have focussed on search for analogues worldwide. This has brought to light a number of economically important new deposits and prospects, including examples in Canada. The discoveries have in turn prompted considerable research on individual deposits and the group as a whole. This short paper is an attempt to summarize the main aspects of the group from the literature cited in Gandhi and Bell (1996), and from the papers published recently in two milestone volumes on these deposits, edited by Porter (2000 and 2002).
