"There has been a major evolution of mineral processing technology in the past decade. The evolution has been driven by recognition of broad environmental changes which have impacted various areas of the world. Numerous government regulations have required many mining and mineral processing organizations to introduce changes to reduce the undesirable effects on the environment; many mining companies have voluntarily introduced new technologies and practices which surpass the limits imposed by the regulations. Surprisingly, some of the 'new' technologies are modifications of concepts developed decades earlier. Gravity separation technology is in this category.Mineral Deposits Limited, an Australian company, has been a world leader in the development of mining concepts, reclamation practices and equipment technology that is environmentally suited to today's requirements. This paper relates to equipment used for gravity concentration and electrostatic separation systems, including Reichert cones, spirals, and electrostatic separators. The basic devices and technologies were developed more than forty-five years ago, but use of the systems was quite limited until environmental and conservation practices were recognized and introduced. Spiral concentrators, for example, were patented in the mid-l940s by I.B. Humphreys in Denver , Colorado. The two types of spirals marketed (the Model 24A for minerals and the Model 24C for coal) remained essentially unchanged until expiration of the patents. During this early period most spirals were used in iron-ore wash plants on the Mesabi Range to recover fine iron which previously had been discarded. About the same time sand mining plants in Florida incorporated spirals to recover titanium minerals and zircon from lowgrade beach sands. The Labrador Trough opened new opportunities for spirals when hard-rock iron-ore deposits were developed; approximately 10 000 Model 24A Humphreys spirals were installed between 1958 and 1966. About 5000 spirals of this model are still operating in the same capacity, in spite of the fact that extensive improvements have since been made in gravity separation technology."

"While thiocyanate (SCN-) is used in a number of industrial processes (production of polyacrylonitrile filaments, synthesis of agricultural chemicals and certain metallurgical solvent extraction and flotation circuits) it is recognized more as an undesirable by-product associated with ' the metallurgical industry. Thiocyanate is present at low concentrations in some waste streams from the iron and steel industry. Of particular significance is the formation of thiocyanate during cyanidation of gold and silver ores, concentrates, tailing s and residues. The thiocyanate levels present in the resulting effluents may range from a few mg/I to several thousand mg/I.At present, thiocyanate does not appear to be as hazardous in the environment as cyanide (CN-) at the same concentration although its interaction with other species and resulting decomposition of products may be unacceptable. Of course the presence of thiocyanate in the leaching circuit and ultimately in the effluent streams may add considerably to the oxidative requirments of any non-selective treatment process for cyanidation wastes.With respect to the thiocyanate as it relates to the cyanidation process, two aspects are evident. Thiocyanate forms and persists in the cyanidation circuit resulting in a ""fouling"" condition with subsequent loss of leaching activity. In order to reduce or control this problem, it is common practice for some mills to discharge daily as much as 20% of the barren leach liquor. Besides contributing to fouling of the leach liquor the formation of thiocyanate represents an irreversible loss of reagent cyanide. It is noteworthy that in some present or proposed mill practice reagent cyanide loss through thiocyanate formation may reach 50%(1). The purpose of this paper is to discus s the application of controlled electrooxidation of thiocyanate with the view of suggesting a process for regenerating cyanide from waste thiocyanate(2). The paper describes the important theoretical aspects and presents experimental data obtained for thiocyanate electrooxidation using both small and large scale electrochemical reactors. Some economic conclusions are presented."

"Mining is a very water intensive industry. As such, the industry has become dependent on applying alternate sources in efforts to minimize the impact on the locally available fresh water. Sources such as recycled water, sea water, and even acid mine drainage have been applied at some limited applications, while other mines may not even have the option of fresh water available in their region. However, the different sources of water will have varying concentrations and types of soluble salts and suspended solids, which can lead to dramatic differences in mineral processing when comparing these types of waters. Water quality is known to affect bubble generation and strength, mineral surface charge, and even reagent coordination properties. This paper focuses on the exploration of how water quality and soluble salts affect the flotation of iron and titanium containing minerals from feldspar, and the design of flotation collectors for optimal performance in this water.INTRODUCTIONFeldspar is defined as a tectosilicate mineral with the generic structure of MAlxSixO8, where M represents the cation (Celik, 2001). Feldspar is most often found naturally occurring with quartz, iron containing minerals (i.e mica), and titanium containing minerals (i.e. rutile). The alumina component of feldspar is of interest to glass making, while the alkali metal component is of interest to ceramics (Vidyadhar, 2002). In glass making, the alumina is known to improve product hardness, durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. In ceramics, the alkalis act as a flux; a flux lowers the melting temperature of the mineral mixture, and assists in connecting the other components present in ceramics. Quartz is stated as having a negative effect on the melting point of the feldspar. Although quartz is typically not removed during the feldspar applications in the glass industry, it needs to be reduced for the ceramics industry. Iron and titanium based minerals are known to have negative effects on color and quality of the products in both glass and ceramics. Thus, these “contaminants” must be reduced to a certain product specification via feldspar beneficiation (Table 1)."

"Refractoriness in Carlin-type gold ores results mostly from fine locking of gold in pyrite, locking in various gangue phases, notably quartz, and a ""preg robbing"" condition attributed to organic carbon. All three conditions may occur in any given deposit, including Newmont &apos;s Carlin and Gold Quarry deposits in Nevada, where types of ref ractoriness occur locally in minor amounts.Measurements of specific gravity, water absorption and screen size distributions of gold in alteration rock types from Gold Quarry show transitional changes from siliceous cherts through decreasingly silicified and increasingly argillized siltstones.Low permeability of siliceous ores contributes to ""size dependent"" refractoriness in cyanidation test work. Colligative physical and chemical measurements demonstrate that silicified cherty ores are difficult to grind, poorly permeable, and less amenable to cyanidation. Refractoriness in pad or column leaching of coarsely crushed siliceous siltstones and cherts is shown to correlate with interrelated measurable mineralogic and physical parameters.IntroductionMetallurgical treatment of variably amenable and refractory types of gold ore may be guided by both analytical and mineralogic data on the interlocking of gold (microscopic an d sub- microscopic) in assorted gangue/sulphide phases. Most oxidized ores from the Carlin gold mine, north of Carlin, Nevada, are amenable to direct cyanidation. The permeability of most oxidized ores from Carlin coupled with the fine size of the gold < 1.5 um) yields rapid extractions and high recovery without fine grinding.Small portions of the Carlin ore body, and also the nearby Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry orebodies, are less amenable to cyanidation, and are classified as refractory. Refractory conditions may be attributed mostly to the association or interlocking of gold with pyrite and /or microcrystalline quartz or chert, and also by the adsorption of leached gold by deleterious forms of carbon, termed ""preg-robbing"" carbon. Each of these conditions are described and defined, with emphasis on a form of silica-locking, which has been referred to as "" size dependent"" refractoriness."

"Grinding at Giant Yellowknife is done in two stages. The first stage consists of two ball mills in closed circuit will: mechanical classifiers, the classifier overflow goes to flotation. The tailings from this flotation circuit are separated into slime and sand portions, the slimes go to an additional flotation circuit while the sand portion goes to the secondary grinding mills.Milltronic automatic sound control units were installed on each of the two primary ball mills and put into operation September 3, 1966. After about two months adjustments to the control units the operators were taken off the grinding circuit on November 1, 1966. The operators duties were taken over by the automatic control units while miscellaneous work was taken over by the helpers in the mill. The labour saving by the installation is approximately $2250.00 per month.After a short period of operation it was apparent there was a slight change in grind. The screen analysis of the primary classifier overflows for the period May to August 1966 averaged 62.23% minus 200 mesh while for the period September to December 1966 averaged 62.0% minus 200 mesh. This is a slight coarsening of the grind. The change in the primary grind has manifested itself also in the screen analysis of the final grind. Before automation the final grind was 80% minus 200 mesh, while after automation it was 7 5% minus 200 mesh. A change of grind was also noted in the flotation concentrates. Before automation the screen analysis of the concentrates was 35% plus 200 mesh and 50% minus 3 25 mesh. A ft er automation it was 35% plus 200 mesh and 47 .5% minus 325 mesh. In other words the grind got coarser or perhaps we should say there was less overgrinding. Another significant change took place in the assays of the slime and sand portion of the primary flotation tailings. It was usual under manual control for the slime portion to assay higher in gold than the sand portion. The reverse is now true."

"In China, more than 90 percent of titanium resources are reserved in vanadic titano-magnetite deposits. In this type of ore, the same elements such as Ti, Fe, Ca, Mg exist on surface of both ilmenite and titanaugite (the gangue mineral) because of isomorphism, which makes selective flotation difficult. Therefore, how to enlarge the floatability difference between these two minerals has always been a research emphasis and still needs to be studied further. In this paper, the pre-treatment methods using ultrasonic wave were proposed. The results indicate that ultrasonic treatment shows beneficial effect to enlarge the floatability difference, and the effect will be strengthened by extending the ultrasonic treatment time or increasing the ultrasonic power. The mechanism was investigated through infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR) analysis. Collector interacts with Ca and Mg which results in titanaugite flotation, after ultrasonic treatment, the dissolution of Ca and Mg is intensified, which leads to the lack of active points on mineral surface, so the floatability of titanaugite is depressed. Meanwhile, collector mainly interacts with Fe which results in ilmenite flotation, and the present of ultrasonic might promote its oxidation (Fe2+ to Fe3+), so the floatability of ilmenite after sonication is increased.INTRODUCTIONUltrasonic is the sound wave with frequency of 2 × 10-4 Hz~2 × 10-9Hz. Since the first International Symposium of Sonochemistry in 1986, the application of ultrasonic wave is more and more extensive. In researches about mining and metallurgy, various investigators have shown that intensive acoustic fields can modify the state of a mineral, leading to chemical or dispersive effects. Generally, the effect of ultrasonic vibration depends upon the nature of the mineral and also the way ultrasonic wave is applied (Celik, 1989; Ozkan, 2002). In addition, ultrasonic treatment usually plays roles of removal of reagents adsorbed layer from minerals and emulsification of flotation reagents when it is used in flotation (Nicol, Engel, & Teh, 1986; Slaczka, 1987; Djendova & Mehandj, 1992; Farmer, Collings, & Jameson, 2000; Gurpinar, Sonmez, & Bozkurt, 2004)."

"Difficulties in the flotation of Inca's ultramafic ores at the Thompson Mill are related to the presence of serpentine slimes and some floatable rock minerals. Serpentine slime coatings depress pentlandite recovery while rock flotation decreases concentrate grade. Carboxy methyl cellulose (CMG) has been shown to promote sulphide flotation and to reject floatable rock.To improve ultramafic ore flotation, CMC addition in the rougher stage was studied in a laboratory scale column. Batch tests were conducted in the lab and followed up with continuous testwork at the Thompson mill. At 0.5-1.0 g CMG per kg ore, pentlandite recovery is increased by 5-10% in rougher flotation, pentlandite/rock selectivity is improved and pentlandite/pyrrhotite selectivity is unaffected.IntroductionAt Inca's Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson Mill, primarily by froth flotation. The sulfide ores are contained within the Thompson Nickel Belt and currently there are two operating mines, Thompson and Birchtree. Sulphide mineralization in both mines is simple, consisting of pyrrhotite (both monoclinic and hexagonal), pentlandite, and minor chalcopyrite. Both deposits are hosted by metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks with variable ultramafic rock associations. Ultramafic rocks are mostly serpentinites: magnesium rich rocks composed predominately of serpentine. There is little serpentinite at the Thompson mine, while mineralization at Birchtree is closely associated with significant ultramafic rocks.Excellent recoveries of pentlandite (Pn) and chalcopyrite (Cp) are achieved at the Thompson Mill when processing ore from the Thompson mine. In treating the ultramafic associated Birchtree ore, nickel recoveries are some 6 to 8% below that achieved with Thompson ore. Furthermore, a typical concentrate from Birchtree ore contains more rock and is higher in MgO content. The presence of rock in the concentrate is related to free floatable rock species as well as rock locked with sulfides. The reason for the difference in flotation responses of these two ores has been the subject of on-going re-search."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"

Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

"Waste dump development at the Fording River Operation s in British Columbia began in 1971. In 1981, several unique as well as unplanned situations provided an opportunity to study water flows through waste dumps.The key to the drainage is naturally segregated rock sizes .created by end dumping from the crest of a pile. The largest size material accumulates at the toe. Flow rates along the base of the studied dumps varied from 2,800 to 13,500 m3/day or 0.032 to 0. 156 m3/s (1.2-5.5 cfs}. Sediment concentrations in the water ranged from 1 to 1,800 mg/I.This paper describes water flows through dumps of varied lithology and maturity. The results suggest that neither long-term water flow nor contained sediments in small streams are jeopardized when crossed by end-dumped fills.IntroductionThe Fording River Operations are located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 115 km north of the United State s and 10 km west of Alberta, within the medial range of the Rocky Mountains. All production is carried out at elevations ranging between 1,600 and 2,200 m above sea level.The property is within a continental climatic zone, with temperature extremes of - 40°C in January to +35°C in July. The average annual precipitation of 335 mm of rainfall and 390 cm of snowfall feeds the numerous seasonal, small drainage courses along the Fording River valley.Since start-up in 1971, 149 million bank cubic met res of waste from truck-shovel and dragline mining have been placed in numerous dumps or ""spoils"". The dumps were developed to the point that several unique situations could be studied. During the peak run-off period of May-June 1981, water flow studies were performed on dumps of varied lithology and maturity. This paper describes the results of the study."

"Mercury is introduced into the Bayer refining process as a trace element in bauxite. During the digestion stage, a portion of the mercury is extracted which partitions between the flash tank off-gas, vapour condensate and bauxite residue streams. A technology or treatment that stabilises mercury in the solid phase during digestion would prevent environmental management issues that may arise from the presence of mercury in condensate and non-condensable gases. This study examines the effect of process additives on the deportment of mercury under Bayer digestion conditions. Bauxite digestion experiments were conducted in batch autoclaves in the presence of additives. Process liquor was analysed for mercury content using a thermal desorption technique. Pyrite and copper hydroxide were evaluated for their suitability as additives.INTRODUCTIONMercury is an ancient metal characterised by electrochemical nobility, volatility, low solubility in water and a liquid state at room temperature (Holleman and Wiberg, 2001). The biogeochemical cycle of mercury is complex. Elemental mercury may enter the atmosphere due its volatility, where it can be transported long distances. After settling and adsorption to sediments, methylation is catalysed through microbial metabolism (Qureshi et al., 2009). Methylated mercury species are potent neurotoxins, and bioaccumulation of mercury is well documented, particularly in seafood (Kozin et al., 2013, Pan et al., 2014, Pollman, 2014). Environmental regulations for mercury emissions are becoming increasingly stringent (UNEP, 2015). Considerable research has already been performed and technologies developed for the remediation of mercury in wastewater and the trapping of mercury from industrial stack emissions. Wastewater technologies usually target ionised mercury using adsorbent, ion exchange and complexation mechanisms (Krishnan and Anirudhan, 2002, Li et al., 2015a, Chiarle et al., 2000), while stack emission technology is dominated by impregnated activated carbon adsorbents (Gao et al., 2013, Zheng et al., 2012). Related developments include piezoelectric amalgamating sensors for in line detection of gaseous elemental mercury in industrial stack emissions (Kabir et al., 2015, Sabri et al., 2011). There is a paucity of research regarding removal of mercury from the Bayer process."

"In 1987 the only knowledge available of the Ansil orebody was that it was high grade, deep and relatively small . High stresses were also anticipated because there had been rockbursts during shaft sinking and destress blasting had been necessary (Fig. 1). From the design, through the development and now in the mining stage, rock mechanics and microseismic monitoring have been used to maximize recovery and safety and minimize dilution. Examples are given of the use of a microseismic monitoring system in the early stages o f mining. This paper also presents a review of the mine&apos;s in situ stress measurement campaign, cable bolting practice and backfill procedure.The Design PhaseAfter the initial mapping and classification work, preIiminary numerical modelling was performed using assumed stresses of ov = oH and oH = 3ov• The empirical Mathew&apos;s analysis was then used to optimize stope dimensions based on geomechanics data available at the time (Bawden et 01., 1988; Falmagne, 1987; Potvin et 01., 1988). Because of high stresses predicted by numerical modelling and a brittle, strong and relatively unfractured host rock which was believed to be rockburst prone, it was decided to mine without temporary or permanent pillars. However, in order to satisfy production rates, the orebody had to be broken up into two horiwns separated by a triangular pillar (Fig. 2). The final mining sequence is shown in Figure 3.The Development PhaseAt this point, based on work accomplished to date, including mapping and observations from drifting and modelling, the following problems were identified: (1) flat backs in the hangingwall andesite were thought to be highly stressed; (2) flat backs in weak massive sulphide ore would also be subjected to high stress and be difficult to support; (3) the felsic dyke was noted as a "" stress raiser"" , because activity increased as drifts approached it; and (4) chlorite coating of joints in the hangingwall was thought to be an important factor in reducing their stability."

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

"This paper describes the development of a process flowsheet designed to provide high dewatering rates and to bring about savings in tailing disposal costs. The flowsheet comprises a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener arranged in closed circuit. The mill tailing, after pulp density adjustment, is fed to the hydrocyclone which yields two products. The underflow product is sent to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflow product, together with the settling cone overflow, goes to the thickener which, with the aid of flocculants, gives a clear effluent and a relatively dilute underflow. The latter combines with the original mill tailing to form the hydrocyclone feed. Solids finally leave the system in the settling cone underflow which can reach pulp densities of up to 78%, making it suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.Some discussion is included for the selection and sizing of equipment required for this process. INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings which forms an added burden in milling practice, often with little or no return. It is, therefore, desirable to conduct this process as economically as possible. One way of reducing costs would be to increase the rate of dewatering so that savings can be made in the size of dewatering unit s which would lead to lower capital and operating expenditures.A common method of dewatering mill tailings is gravity sedimentation which is frequently carried out with the aid of flocculation. In most cases, flocculation greatly enhances the sedimentation process, but only until a pulp density of 50% to 55% is reached in the settled material.Centrifugal sedimentation in hydrocyclones can provide high pulp densities rapidly, but does not result in a clear effluent.This paper outlines a suitable combination of gravity and centrifugal sedimentations that results in an over-all high rate of dewatering. The system developed produces a material of high pulp density while at the same time giving clear effluent."

"Black calcium cyanide is utilized mainly as a reagent for gold extraction. It is produced by reacting calcium cyanamide, sodium chloride and calcium carbide at temperatures in the range of 1200°C to 1400°C in a smothered arc furnace. The equivalent sodium cyanide content of the product is in the range of 45% to 50% and the calcium cyanamide conversion efficiency is in the range of 90% to 95%. Since black cyanide contains impurities such as salt and lime and also because the conversion efficiencies are below 100%, the product contains unwanted materials which significantly increase the shipping costs.The impurity content of the raw materials can not be lowered without increasing their cost and/or the processes to produce them, and therefore the present research was focussed on studying those factors which affect the cyanide grade. The major variables investigated were: the heating rate, the reaction temperature, the salt to cyanamide ratio, the nitrogen content of the calcium cyanamide, moisture additions and calcium carbide additions. It was found that each of these variables had a significant effect on the product grade. The highest cyanide content of the product was obtained for salt to cyanamide mass ratios of 0.55 to 0.60. The salt reduces the decomposition rate of the cyanide and, therefore, at low salt to cyanamide ratios and at higher temperatures, the product grade is decreased. It is likely that the salt evaporates at the higher reaction temperatures and this decreases the cyanide capacity of the melt. High heating rates minimize the residence time and thus salt evaporation is reduced and higher grades can be obtained. As expected, the cyanide content increased with the nitrogen content of the cyanamide. Calcium carbide additions resulted in an increase in the product grade. The presence of small amounts of moisture in the charge caused a significant decrease in the cyanide content of the black cyanide. An equilibrium reaction is postulated in order to explain the black cyanide process and in particular the effect of calcium carbide on the product grade."

"The Red Dog deposit of the western Brooks Range, Alaska was discovered in the 1970s. Two mineralized areas are present, the Main and Hilltop deposits. With indicated and inferred reserves of 77 million tonnes of 17.1% zinc, 5.0% lead and 82 g/ tonne silver, the Main deposit of Red Dog represents one of the world&apos;s largest zinc-lead deposit s. Since serious evaluation by Cominco commenced in 1980, a better understanding of deposit geology has been gained through 10 715m of diamond drilling and concurrent geologic, geophysical and geotechnical studies. The Red Dog deposit is of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian or Early Permian age, and straddles a redox transition in fine-grained and chemical sediments of the Red Dog structural sequence.The Main deposit has been modified by regional Mesozoic thrust faulting and isoclinal folding, resulting in complex interrelationships between silica rock, sulphide rock and barite. Multiple lines of evidence suggest the Main deposit contains both a syngenetic stratiform and a replacement component. Ore fluids were probably derived by regional lateral movement of brines through a coarse clastic footwall aquifer, then upwards along block faults to the site of the Red Dog deposit.Historical PerspectiveThe region in the vicinity of the Red Dog deposit (Fig. 1) was first prospected by J. W. Kelley in the late 1880s (Orth, 1967). The first coordinated inland exploration was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1910-1911 and 1923-1926 (Smith, 1913; Smith and Mertie, 1930). The earliest reports of zinc-lead mineralization in the region include reference to samples collected at unknown locales by Eskimo prospectors (Anderson, 1944). In 1955 stratiform pyrite was discovered 19 km west of Red Dog by I.L. Tailleur of the U.S. Geological Survey (Tailleur, 1970). The first reported visit to what is known as Red Dog was by I.L. Tailleur in 1968, who was field checking a colour anomaly noted by B. Baker, a local bush pilot (Tailleur, 1970; Moore et al., 1986) ."

The bath smelting process is one of the key techniques applied in the current copper smelting production, which includes bottom-blown and side-blown furnaces differently from the direction of gas injection. Liquid matte and slag form the bath in the smelting furnace. To better understand the fluid dynamic of the bath and further optimise the operational efficiencies in the smelting furnace, physical simulation of the bath in the horizontal cylindrical reactor was investigated. The mixing behaviour and wave motion of the bath in the bottom-blown and side-blown furnaces have been studied systematically. The mixing time is reduced with increasing gas flowrate and height of the lower layer, while it increases significantly with increasing the height of the upper layer. The wave motion in the furnaces can be suppressed with the presence of the upper layer, but the bath with a lower density generates higher wave amplitude. Overall, in comparison to bottom-blown mixing, side-blown mixing shows better mixing efficiency and lower wave amplitude. In addition, the plume eye and splash phenomena occurred in the bottom-blown furnace have also been studied. INTRODUCTION The bath smelting process is one of the principal techniques used in the current copper making industry. The bath smelting techniques have some advantages of high smelting efficiencies, low capital costs, low energy consumptions and reduced dust generations. From the direction of gas injection, the bath smelting techniques can be classified into five general types: (1) top-submerged blown, e.g. Ausmelt and Isasmelt; (2) top-suspended blown, such as Mitsubishi smelting; (3) top direct-to-copper smelting, such as Outokumpu smelting; (4) submerged side-blown, such as Noranda and Teniente smelting; (5) bottom-blown, such as Dongying Fangyuan bottom-blown copper smelting furnace (Schlesinger et al., 2002; Zhao, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Perez-Tello et al., 2018). In many metallurgical processes involving bath smelting situations, the objectives of agitation are to accelerate the bath homogenization inside the bath which makes a significant contribution to process efficiency and product quality. Extensive mixing studies have been performed for ladle refining and tundish associated to steelmaking processes through water physical models. Mixing time is the parameter used to quantify the efficiency of mixing in the liquid bath and the first empirical equation predicting mixing time was proposed by Nakanishi, Fujii and Szekely (1975). Later on, more systematic studies have been carried out on ladle mixing and researchers realized that the geometry of the vessel could also have a significant impact on mixing (Khajaviand & Barati, 2010). However, the investigations using ladles which are vertical cylindrical vessels, cannot be directly used in the study of mixing behaviour in horizontal cylindrical reactors. Understanding the fluid dynamics inside horizontal cylindrical bath smelter is useful from the industrial perspective. Recently fluid dynamics of horizontal cylindrical smelter related to copper smelting have been studied by the authors’ group (Shui et al., 2015a, 2015b, 2018a; 2018b; Xu et al., 2018, 2019).

Differing thermal histories in and around a weld can lead to differences in grain size, phase composition and morphology of precipitates; mechanical properties will vary accordingly. Hardness testing gives limited information and the machining and testing of tensile and/or impact specimens that would reveal these variations (which may occur over very small distances) is not practical. Therefore, in this investigation, shear punch testing was applied to measure the variation in the room temperature mechanical properties of a welded pipeline steel.

In 1970, the Government of Saskatchewan instituted a program aimed at resolving the dilemma of excess productive capacity over the market demand which existed for potash produced in Saskatchewan. The two primary elements of the program were prorationing of potash production to market demand and a minimum selling price. The paper reviews the factors, both local and international in nature that led to the introduction of the program. The licensing mechanics and the operation of the program, along with the changes that have been introduced in two and one-half years of operation, are discussed. Attention is given to the results of the controls as they affect the industry and the province. Also discussed is the outlook for Saskatchewan potash in world markets.

Wall control at the Pipe Open Pit is of primary importance in ensuring the long-term stability of the operation, while keeping costs to a minimum. Blasting techniques have been adapted to the variations in competence and structure of the wall rocks. A portion of the perimeter wall is being developed in incompetent peridotite . A recent change in pit slope design provides a wide safety berm on alternate benches. A support program which consists of pinning the crests of wide berms with vertical reinforced concrete dowels and horizontal bolting of walls shows evidence of increasing the stability of the pit walls. This paper describes the blasting and support techniques which are contributing to successful wall control in the Pipe operation.
