"In an attempt to address the issue of rising labour costs, and to improve productivity, a laser-based system to guide underground LHDs and trucks has been developed. This comprehensive system is known as the Opti-Trak system.Essentially, the vehicle is equipped with front and rear-mounted lasers which scan a reference strip mounted on the drift back. The vehicle follows this reference strip and in addition, based on reflective bar codes mounted beside the reference strip, initiates certain functions (i.e. dump cycle, speed change, brake check, etc.). Any programming that is drift-specific is handled by the positioning of the reference strips and bar codes. Consequently, the vehicle can easily travel to many different haulageways or branches, providing the reference strip and bar codes are in place.The advantages of this system are an immediate elimination of haulage operator costs and an increase in available hauling time to 7 hours out of an 8-hour shift as compared to the typical 5Y2 out of 8 hours that a manned haulage system offers.This paper describes the Opti-Trak system and the benefits to be realized from automation of mine haulage requirements."

This paper outlines the principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and the depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined. Introduction T HE purpose of this paper is to outline the principles of friction hoisting, to describe the components and to show the advantages of multi-rope friction hoisting. Some calculations are made to show that the power requirements and the initial costs of friction hoists are less than those of conventional drum hoists, once a certain depth of shaft has been reached. The use of multi-rope friction hoists is gradually superseding the employment of the conventional drum hoist in many parts of the world. It results in heavier payloads from deeper levels, an increase in shaft safe-ty and a more compact installation for protection against adverse weather conditions. Lost time and services caused by electrical equipment breakdown or cable faults can often be substantially reduced by the use of direct-current high-voltage testing as a maintenance tool. This paper discusses the relative merits of alternating-current versus direct-current testing, pointing out the advantages in size and cost of equipment and more definitive results achieved through the use of D.C. General principles of direct-current high-volt-age testing, types of testing, methods of performing the actual test and interpreting the results are explained. ?The value of insulation resistance measurements and their relationship to high-voltage testing is discussed. Pinpointing the physical location of a cable defect using a fault locator or thumper is described. Reference is made to several organizations that have effected considerable savings with high-voltage test programs. The Tribag copper deposit is one of the rare examples of mineralized breccias in the Canadian Shield. The breccia is a pipe-like body, and consists of granitic, diabasic and volcanic fragments embedded in a vuggy, quartz-carbonate matrix. The mineralization is essentially chalcopyrite and pyrite, with minor molybdenite, sphalerite, galena and other sulphides. The main ore zone is saddle-like in shape, and is enveloped in a zone of chloritization, sericitization and clay-mineral alteration. It is suggested that the breccia is of the diatreme type. Introduction T HIS paper is based on eighteen months of field work, including surface and underground geological mapping and core logging, and on the survey of relevant literature. No significant amount of laboratory work has been done as yet. Location and Access The Tribag Batchawana property is located 40 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, about 10 miles east of Lake Superior. A 17-mile, all-weather road connects the property to the Trans-Canada highway to the south, and 4 miles of a 12-mile road remain to be completed to link it to the Algoma Central Railway to the northeast.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. The cleaning of copper smelting slag requires magnetite and cuprous oxide reduction. The slag reduction with coke, injected coal powder or bunker oil is strongly endothermic and requires heat generation by fuel combustion or the use of electric energy. The reduction of fayalitic slag with calcium carbide is slightly exothermic and the formed calcium silicate modifies the slag. Thus, the additional energy is required only for covering furnace heat losses. Results of crucible scale tests showed the rate of slag reduction approximately five times higher in comparison of the slag reduction with coke under the same conditions. It seems that the effect of exothermic reaction and slag modification with CaO at the reaction interface results in very high rate of slag reduction. Industrial scale tests carried out in the Anglo-American Chagres Smelter demonstrated the possibilities of effective reduction and cleaning of the slags from a flash smelter and Peirce-Smith converters in a Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace. The slag reduction was carried out without any reductant or stirring gas injection, simply by calcium carbide charging through a furnace mouth, and was very fast.

Process optimization of heating and physical separation for Cobalt (Co) recycling from spent lithium ion battery (LIB) was investigated. LiCoO2 in spent LIB was transformed to LixCoO2 which was more easily decomposed than LiCoO2 by heating. Coexisting materials of aluminum and carbon, and sealed atmosphere of the LIB promoted LixCoO2 decomposition. In an atmosphere of Argon, 95 % of LixCoO2 in the spent LIB was decomposed to 76 % of Co oxide and 19 % of Co metal in 10 min at 823 K; a lower temperature than the theoretical value for LiCoO2. The Co oxide and Co metal exhibited magnetic properties and could be recovered by wet magnetic separation. Furthermore, slow heating was effective for grain growth of Co oxide and Co metal. At 2 K/min rate of heating, average grain size of Co oxide and Co metal were 239 µm and 28 µm respectively, whereas at 30 K/min they were 190 µm and 15 µm respectively. Therefore, separation efficiency for Co recovery by wet magnetic separation was increased when spent LIB was slowly heated at 2 K/min.

Unknown goafs and roadways of abandoned coalmines can be a great water inrush hazard for coalmine workers. Consequently, advance detection of such hazards is of great importance. By detonating seismic charges in underground coal seams, we can collect seismic data using a surface survey line, which is located across the ground projection of the underground shot point. This experiment was conducted in a coalmine in Shaanxi Province, China. After surface elevation compensation and travel time adjustments, we accurately determined the position of the goaf boundary along the survey line based on the wave velocity anomaly on the seismic record. Then we used a scattered wave imaging technique to enhance the energy of the scattered waves that are generated when the coal seam roof slide wave (refracted wave when the incident angle bigger than the critical angle) hits the roadway, thus confirming location of a geological discontinuity (roadway). This experiment shows that the coalmine ground seismic method, employing an underground explosive charge and a surface seismic array, has the ability to detect an abandoned roadway and goaf in advance of coal mining, thus can improve worker safety.

Carbonyl nickel powders of irregular particle shape and low a11parent density are used extensively in the production of porous nickel electrodes for nickel-cadmium storage batteries and hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells employing alkaline electrolytes. Such porous nickel matrices are at-tractive for these intended applications as they are relatively inexpensive, are corrosion resistant, have good electrical conductivity, can be welded to form electrical contacts, have a long life (as demonstrated in alkaline storage batteries), and are rugged and vibration and shock resistant. This paper describes a feasibility study concerning the production of porous multi-layer nickel electrodes by the pressing and sintering of stacked layers of green-powder rolled nickel sheet. Background H AUSNER (1) conveniently listed nine different powder compaction processes used for forming metal powders into useful shapes. These are shown in Table I. There are additional powder metallurgy processes; however, most of these are combinations of two or more processes listed in the Table. A study of the literature revealed that every powder compacting process, with the exception of isostatic pressing and explosive forming, has been evaluated or is being used for the manufacture of porous metal electrodes.

Microwave (MW) energy has been used widely for several decades for communications, food processing, wood drying, vulcanization of rubber and medical therapy. Recently, this technology was found to be capable of successfully sintering ceramic and metallic powder materials, with the advantages of reducing soaking times and sintering temperatures. Unlike conventional heating, MW radiation works through the absorption of the microwave energy by a material placed in an electromagnetic field within the microwave cavity. A far more efficient heating process is produced due to the unique ability of microwaves in selectively heating a pecific part of the material with desirable dielectrical properties. This exploratory research was initiated with the objective of locally sintering the thermal barrier coating of gas turbine components using MW radiation. This novel technique may allow repairing of the component without subjecting the entire piece to unnecessary elevated temperatures and reduction of process time and cost. Y ttria stabilized zirconia was used in this study and sintering was conducted using a multimodal 1.2 kW microwave facility. Three configurations of heating setup were experimented and the preliminary results will be discussed in this paper.

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. Titanium alloys have found increasingly wide range of applications in aerospace, chemical, medical, sporting, power generation, oil and gas extraction industries mainly due to the low density, high mechanical property characteristics, biocompatibility, and excellent corrosion resistance. In the manufacturing routes of their finished products, welding has been a key technique used and always been a main concern requiring the stringent compliance to the well defined process. Conventionally, gas tungstenarc (TIG), gas metal-arc (MG), plasma arc, and electron beam welding processes have been used to weld titanium alloys. Nowadays, laser beam welding has provided great challenging applications for titanium alloys due to the low and precise heat input, deep and narrow fusion zone, small heataffected zone, low thermal distortion and high productivity. At the NRC Institute for Aerospace Research, some R&D work has been undertaken for titanium alloys using laser beam welding process. These investigations have mainly concentrated on optimizing the welding process as well as understanding the fundamental process-structure-property relationships. In this invited keynote presentation, the research progresses obtained and the main issues encountered in laser welding of titanium alloys will be briefly summarized.

The lignite deposits of the Kozani-Ptolemais-Amyntaio basin in western Macedonia (North-West Greece) present a difficult modelling problem. Each deposit consists of several thin lignite layers ranging from a few centimetres to a few tens of centimeters in thickness, and thin intercalated sterile layers of marly limestones, marls, clays, and sands. These layers are practically impossible to model individually due to fast lateral transition of lignite layers to humus clay and vice versa and the lack of reliable and detailed stratigraphic correlation, leading to compositing methods being applied prior to any interpolation and modelling. The complexity of the deposit is further increased by the presence of a number of faults. This paper presents the modelling and estimation procedures applied during the most recent study of the South Western Field ? a new deposit that is considered for development and lignite production over the next years and will support the operation of a new power station in the area. Special focus is given to drillhole database structuring, fault modelling, stratigraphic correlation, mineable lignite intervals compositing, and resource estimation. The use of specialised mine planning software in all stages of modelling and estimation is thoroughly explained.

Until recently, the fire protection systems used to protect mining equipment were based on generically designed, off the- shelf concepts. These systems were reliant on single agent approaches and were generally comprised of a series of small twenty or thirty pound chemical canisters that would discharge their contents when triggered by thermal detection means. As the equipment grew in capacity, the logic used to increase the protection was to add more chemical canisters to the system. Hydraulic excavators and large-scale mining trucks grew dramatically in size into the 1990?s and beyond; with this growth came the increase in major losses due to fire. This was evidenced throughout this period, and continues to be of great concern today. During this presentation you will learn of the significant changes that have come about as a result of this history. Today, dual-agent products, infrared detection and unit-specific, engineered systems are the primary phrases used when discussing how to best protect this equipment from fire loss. This session is a must for anybody looking to optimally protect their equipment assets and for those looking to renew and/or secure new insurance for high value equipment in the future.

The Fe assay values from the diamond drill-holes within a magnetite deposit of magmatic origin are utilized in this study. Only assay data from the unoxidized magnetite mineralization was utilized. The data from the overlying hematite mineralization zone was not used. A threedimensional block model estimated using ordinary kriging (OK) is used for analysis purposes. To estimate the non-linear standard deviations (s) and the confidence intervals (CI) of block estimates a discrete Gaussian variogram model is used in this project. The change-of support coefficient (rv) and the block-support correction are used in the ?block-anamorphosis?. A new calculated value of rv is 0.7283, implies that its influence in the block-anamorphosis is not significant. The CIs are calculated from the block-gaussian variables; then back transformed to the raw values. At 95% probability, the CI for the kriged block estimates of Fe values are calculated using Gaussian kriged estimates of the Fe and the corresponding standard deviations (Gaussian). The results indicate that the block estimates with a high influence from relatively small amount of samples can be identified as high-risk estimates.

"This paper describes a process that can provide high rates of dewatering and that has the potential of bringing significant savings in tailing disposal costs. It involves a three-stage, closed-circuit operation employing a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener. The mill tailing, with adjusted pulp density, is first fed to the hydrocyclone. The underflow from the hydrocyclone goes to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflows from the hydrocyclone and the settling cone are sent to a thickener which, with the addition of a flocculant, gives a clear liquid effluent and a dilute underflow which is recycled back to the hydrocyclone. The underflow of the settling cone is a material with as high as 78% pulp density and is suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings and forms an additional cost item in milling operations. Cost-cutting measures are therefore desirable in this area as in any other stage of milling. One way of achieving this is through increased rate of dewatering which would require smaller dewatering units with correspondingly lower capital and operating costs."

Due to the growing share of electrical cars, the use of lithium ion batteries significantly increased. Recycling of these batteries is essential to safely dispose hazardous materials as well as to recover valuables (Cu, Ni, Co, etc.). In order to optimise the recycling process, accurate information is required on the slag phase equilibria for battery smelting. The slag is a multi-component system containing alumina from the battery cases, silica and lime from fluxes, and manganese and lithium from the electrode materials. The present study accurately determined the phase equilibria in the "MnO"-Al2O3-SiO2 sub-ternary system at metal alloy saturation. Particular attention was given to the accuracy and reliability of the final results by highlighting the different reaction pathways, mass transfer- and reaction mechanisms taking place in the system during experiments. This attention enabled improved experimental methodology and measurements. Based on the present study, further measurements will be undertaken in the quaternary "MnO"-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 system at low "MnO" concentrations, which closely represents the future recycling industrial slags.

"In order to avoid pollution of water in Flemming Brook and Little River, which drain the area in which the Brunswick No. 12 Mine and Concentrator are located, the company has gone to considerable expense in preparing tailings storage and effluent setting ponds. The attached drawing gives a plan of the six settling ponds together with elevations of the dikes and the effluent weirs.All original dikes for the six ponds were constructed from humus-free clay and rock material, which was obtained, preferentially, by excavating from within the dike area. Run-off water, precipitated on the outside slopes of the dams will drain off without contacting the tailing material. A ditch was made north of the dam site to deflect surface run-off to the east into a branch of Flemming Brook.A secondary dike, made from tailings, has recently been erected on No. 1 and No. 2 tailings pond inside and above the earth-filled dike which serves as a roadway. Run-off from the tailings dikes will be retained inside the ponds by ditching between the roadway and tailings dike into ponds 4 and 6."

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase.

Abstract - The Nui Phao W-F-Cu-Au-Bi deposit is located in one of the poorest regions of northern Vietnam. The deposit is currently undergoing a pre-feasibility study by Tiberon Minerals Ltd., with a view to developing what would be the largest WO3 mine and one of the five largest fluorite mines in the world. The project is being planned in close compliance with World Bank and national guidelines for environmental and social protection. Development of the mine is anticipated to bring the following benefits: remediation of serious pre-existing environmental conditions (natural and anthropogenic heavy metal contamination and acid rock drainage); provision of employment and training, and thereby wealth, to local communities; significant tax and royalty payments to government, which will be reinvested as social spending; and development of municipal and industrial infrastructure to build sustainable post-mining communities. The role of governments at all levels is critical in guiding and facilitating this process. This paper was written prior to development of the mine, and relays the intentions of the developers. Future studies will be needed to evaluate the degree of attainment of sustainable development objectives, both during mine operation and after closure.
