Se describe el desarrollo del sistema y los provechos derivar se presenta.AbstractThe grinding circuit at Selbaie consists of SAG mill and ball mill closed circuit grinding. The SAG mill motor current is used to control throughput. This system stabilizes the circuit but does not actively optimize circuit performance. An expert system was developed to aid the optimization of the circuit by manipulating the set-points of existing PI control loops. The system was implemented with the Comdale /C expert system package and has been on line since May 1992. The expert system has resulted in a net increase in tonnage of 7tph and a decrease in annual grinding media costs of $210,000. The system development is described and the benefits derived are presented."

"Mine Doyon, in collaboration with CRM's Process Control Division, improved the control strategy at the SAG mill I Ball mill grinding circuit. The project aimed at increasing operation stability and throughput. First, a needs analysis was achieved in order to define the control philosophy and to upgrade the process control equipments and instrumentation. The stabilizing control strategy has been developed and implemented successfully using single loop PID controllers. The monitoring feature as well as the rule based supervisory control strategy were implemented on 486PCs running Process Vision and COMDALE/C softwares. Main features of the control strategy are described in this paper while results are presented and discussed.RésuméLa Mine Doyon, en collaboration avec le service de contrôle des procédés du CRM, a optimisé la stratégie de contrôle au circuit de broyage. Les objectifs du projet étaient !'amélioration de la stabilité de !'ensemble de !'opération et la maximisation du tonnage usiné. Une analyse de besoins a été réalisée pour concevoir la philosophie de contrôle et déterminer les ajouts a apporter a I 'instrumentation et au systeme de contrôle. Une stratégie de contrôle à deux niveaux, integrant stabilisation et supervision, a été developpee et mise en opération. La regulation est réalisee par une combinaison de contrôleurs Moore de type PID. Le monitoring et la stratégie de contrôle a base de règles soot implantés sur des micro-ordinateurs de type PC/486 avec les logiciels ProcessVision et Comdale/C. Les principaux aspects de Ia stratégie de contrôle sont décrits dans cet article et les résultats obtenus soot présentés et discutés."

Increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) is expected to lead to new development and expansion in industries processing and or recycling REE. For some industrial operators, sending aqueous waste streams to a municipal wastewater treatment plant, or publicly owned treatment works (POTW), may be a cost effective disposal option. However, wastewaters that adversely affect the performance of biological wastewater treatment at the POTW will not be accepted. The objective of our research is to assess the effects of wastewaters that might be generated by new rare earth element (REE) beneficiation or recycling processes on biological wastewater treatment systems. We have been investigating the impact of yttrium and europium on the biological activity of activated sludge collected from an operating municipal wastewater treatment plant. We have also examined the effect of an organic complexant that is commonly used in REE extraction and separations; similar compounds may be a component of newly developed REE recycling processes. Our preliminary results indicate that in the presence of Eu, respiration rates for the activated sludge decrease relative to the no-Eu controls, at Eu concentrations ranging from <10 to 660 µM. Yttrium appears to inhibit respiration as well, although negative impacts have been observed only at the highest Y amendment level tested (660 µM). The organic complexant appears to have a negative impact on activated sludge activity as well, although results are variable. Ultimately the intent of this research is to help REE industries to develop environmentally friendly and economically sustainable beneficiation and recycling processes.

"To better understand the wear process of various materials that may be used as blades on snow removal equipment, the first step is to evaluate the influence of the load applied and the moving speed on road wear rates of one type of steel and three types of polymers. While the behavior of steel conforms to Archard&apos;s law, wear rates of polymers increase to a power of ex of the load applied according to a model implying that the wear of these materials is due to fatigue. The wear rate of some of the polymers varies considerably in terms of speed, unlike the steel. The wear resistance of some of these polymers outclasses the steel tested as long as the speed is not too great. They, therefore, present interesting alternatives for snow removal on more fragile surfaces such as sidewalks and zone made of inter-block slabs.IntroductionSince the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, the massive use of machines has brought with it a number of different problems regarding wear. Snowplowing roads, parking lots and sidewalks is an activity that generates enormous expense in a country such as Canada. To better understand these wear processes and in the hope of stimulating new approaches designed to reduce the costs related to this sector of activity, this paper presents the behaviour of several materials (steel, polymer and rubber) as they wear on an asphalt-fines matrix surface lubricated with water. Also discussed is the effect of various parameters such as the load applied and speed."

The methods, their adaptation to local conditions, their evolution, dilution control and recovery of mineral reserves will all be dealt with.The recovery of the B zone crown pillar under 40 m of till that was originally saturated with water, is of particular interest.Future underground development and production start-up of the A-2 zone, organization of mining operations, mechanical services, group incentives and safety practices will also be given.IntroductionThe underground deposit of B zone is not very deep. A 300 m shaft provides access to the mine. In addition , exploitation sublevels are developed every 20 m and are linked by a service ramp. The overburden located on top of the deposit is 40 m thick and is composed of a very dense till.A detailed work plan was initiated to permit mining under the overburden. To do so, it was imperative that efficient methods be developed. At a time when an accident at the Belmoral Mine shook the mining world , it was a task to convince provincial authorities that it was safe.While B zone was being mined , development began in the A-2 zone deposit which has recently been put into production (Figs. 1 and 2).The intention of this paper is to provide an outline of the mining method s and their particular aspects. To do so, some of the mine services are described and a brief outline of the under ground department is provided."

It has always been necessary, therefore, to demonstrate to the investor of capital that production of a saleable commodity is both technically feasible and economically viable. The instrument typically used to make these determinations is the feasibility study .Traditionally, mining companies have been rather conservative in their approach to financial management. Until about thirty years ago, the capital required to develop a new mine was most frequently provided by internal corporate cash now and virtually all of the necessary technical and economic studies were performed &apos;in house&apos;. Under these circumstances, there was little standardization as to what constituted an acceptable feasibility study, and even less as to what constituted an acceptable measure of economic viability."

"Crystal phase of copper-containing slag regulation by the slag viscosity, cooling speed and cooling method, where the slag viscosity is related to the temperature and alkalinity. According to the mineralogy properties of a copper-containing slag, experiments of crystal phase regulation and flotation were conducted. When the copper-containing slag that adding a small amount of calcium oxide was cooled slowly at a rate of 3°C/min and about 1050°C n a cinder inclusion system, the viscosity of slag can be remained under 0.25 Pa·S and more than ??% of copper particles that the grain size is larger than 20 ?m in slag. The whole flow of flotation experiment was carried out to recover copper from the copper-containing slag with crystal phase regulating and the copper concentrate grade was ?????%, the recovery efficiency of copper was 94.18%.INTRODUCTIONChina's annual output of copper slag is more than 6 million tons, the current total has reached 80 million tons. It is equivalent to 640 thousand tons of copper metal with the copper grade of 0.82%. Most of the smelting slag were storage. It is not only occupy the land and pollute the environment, but also make a huge waste of resource (Alp, Deveci, & Süngün, 2008; Carranza, Iglesias, Mazuelos, Romero, & Forcat, 2009; Gorai, & Jana, 2003), therefore, it is good way to achieve copper slag resources by the effective recovery of valuable component from copper smelting slag, which is an important measure of the current process of copper smelting slag and implement the central authorities to vigorously develop the circular economy, improve the recycling of resources, increase copper production of intensive development (Zhou, et al., 1994; Zhang, Zhang, & Wang, 2005). Currently, researches on comprehensive utilization of the coppercontaining slag made a much progress (Wei, 2004; Liu, Gai, Yang, Sui, Li, & Fu, 2008; Liu & Zhu, 2008; Zhang, 2010; Sun, Chen, & Tang, 2012; Qin, Wang, Ren, Wei, Peng, & Gu, 2012). Flotation is one of the most effective method to recover the copper from smelting slag, which has the features of low cost and high efficiency (Song & Liu, 2001; Zhang, Wang, & Li, 2012). But the copper particles in the copper smelting slag distribution is very uneven, and the thickness of the material is very serious. The copper content in the micro level is higher, the size of copper sulfide ore is less than 0.043 mm, which leads to the difficulty of the monomer dissociation (Tossavainen, Engstrom, Yang, Menad, Lidstrom, Larsson, & Bjorkman, 2007; Moustakas, Mavropoulos, Katsou, Haralambous, & Loizidou, 2012). In this study, according the process mineralogy of a smelting copper slag, the crystal of smelting copper slag was optimized by controlling the temperature, alkalinity, cooling rate and cooling method, which makes the fine copper mineral particles in the copper slag crystal further, and can be used to meet the particle size requirements of flotation, thereby enhancing the flotation of copper."

The fair market value of an exploration property is determined by its potential to host a mineral deposit. This potential is gauged by the results of previous exploration, exploration stage, meaningful past expenditures and remaining targets that are not yet tested. Values of exploration properties can be viewed as distinct points in a three-dimensional space defined by orthogonal axes, namely: Exploration Stage (x-axis); Cumulative Expenditures (y-axis); and Property Value (z-axis). In general, these values are estimated by applying activity factors on previous exploration expenditures, e.g. an activity factor of 100% for an active property with good potential and a factor of 50% for an active property but past expenditures have not upgraded the property. At certain periods, a market factor may also be applied to reflect the activity of mineral property acquisitions. For properties that do not exhibit any exploration potential, only nominal values are applied.

Newmont?s Phoenix mine started production in March of 2006. Due to the extreme hardness of the ore, the mill has struggled to meet throughput projections. Grinding studies showed that optimizing the existing circuit would not achieve budgeted throughput. These studies also showed that the pebble crusher was being underutilized due to the inability of the SAG mill to break the rock. The concept was developed to supplement the feed to the existing pebble crusher with a secondary crusher. Models of this process looked favorable so a portable crusher was installed to test the process. The temporary crusher was successful at increasing the throughput by 7% and based on the operating data, plans are currently being developed to install a permanent secondary crushing system in front of the SAG mill. This paper will review the results from the test crusher and the flow sheet for the permanent secondary crusher.

Air cooled crackable and conventional forged steel specimens were tested under reversed push-pull conditions to examine the effect of shot-peening on their high cycle fatigue behaviour (-106 cycles). The steels were tested in the normalized as well as shot-peened conditions. The results showed that shot-peening smooth specimens had little effect on the fatigue limit of the air cooled forged steels and the detrimental effect of the rougher peened surface was not apparent. Microhardness profiles indicated that the shot peening produced a gradient of compressive residual stresses that was greater than that of the loading stresses, suppressing the anticipated beneficial effect on fatigue life. Crack initiation was more likely to occur below the surface. The results indicate that the surface roughness was not a significant factor in controlling the fatigue lives, since they were essentially the same for the non shot-peened and shot-peened steels.

Strainbursts in brittle rock are common to deep underground mines. The state of stress at the boundary of mine openings is dictated by a biaxial stress/loading condition. This paper reports the results of a series of biaxial compression tests carried out on 100 mm cubic samples of norite rock, under different horizontal-to-vertical stress ratios. The results indicate that the biaxial compressive strength is considerably higher than the uniaxial one. It is found that the norite sample behaviour under biaxial loading mirrors field behaviour where shearing and progressive spalling of the opening boundary are observed prior to strainbursting. Sample failure is initiated by rock spalling at the sample free faces, i.e. in the plane of biaxial loading. Finally, it?s the out-of-plane shear failure mechanism that causes the sample to collapse. Shear failure takes place violently and abruptly and is accompanied with considerable audible noise.

The surface deformations induced by reservoir dilations can be measured using tiltmeters and these measurements can be used to infer reservoir level volume changes by solving an inverse problem. Preferred approach to solve such an inverse problem is to consider more tiltmeter measurements than the number of unknown variables considered in the inverse problem. However, sufficient number of measurement points is not always available due to economical and practical issues. This paper proposes a new approach to circumvent this problem. The new approach entails generation of pseudo surface deformation data by curve fitting tiltmeter measurements using a mathematical function, which delineates three-dimensional characteristics of surface deformation profiles. Then a three-dimensional inverse problem is solved using pseudo surface deformation data. This method is useful in inferring reservoir volume changes with high areal resolution when the number of available measurements is not sufficient to acquire the desired areal resolution.

"THIS DEPARTMENT is unique in that it operates in the production stream and also provides an essential service. Its operating function consists of scheduling an ore train to haul 10,000 tons per day over 17.1 miles of track and switching all incoming and outgoing rail equipment on 2.2 miles of track at the minesite and 6.2 miles of track at the metallurgical site. The service it provides is traffic control of all incoming commodities and all outgoing concentrates, metals and acid by rail and truck, even extending to port and ship control for overseas shipments (Fig. 46). "The current theory of how explosives fracture rock offers no explanation for the improvements in fragmentation and the reduction of fly rock and back break which occurs when an adequate inter-row delay time is used. Nor does it explain why fragmentation improves with rectangular drill patterns where the hole spacing may be as much as four times the hole burden.A new theory of rock fragmentation is proposed which builds on the existing theory. It offers rational explanations for the many blast effects which the current theory does not address and the need for adequate timing delays between rows.
