THE Hamilton Works of The Steel Company of Canada is a fully integrated steel plant with an annual capacity of three million tons. Located on the south shore of -Hamilton bay, it is in the centre of Hamilton's industrial belt. The heavy concentration of industrial activities found in this area, accompanied metallurgical well-known sources of pollution which are normal to urban areas is creating a pollution problem which concerns both industry and the general public. The Steel Company of Canada has recognized this problem and, accordingly, has adopted the policy of integrating suitable pollution control devices into its new installations. Much effort is also being expended to control the emissions of air contaminants from the existing equipment. At the Hamilton Works, there are two main sources of metallurgical dust emissions to the atmosphere -the Open Hearth furnaces and the Sinter Plant. Two commonly estimated fractal dimensions, called b and D values, represent statistical characteristics in the distribution of magnitude sizes (b) and spatial hypocenter locations (D) of microseismic events, respectively. We postulate that the values of b and D are related to specific stress regimes. Through different case studies of fluid injection into an oil/gas reservoir or geothermal field, we infer that the measured temporal variation in fractal dimension b is most likely due to significant changes in the local stress regime. The fracture dimension D indicates the spatial clustering of events. The distribution of these events can vary with time because of stress perturbations that (re)activate fractures whose direction favours their movement under a specific stress regime. Thus a combined statistical study of these two dimensions can help infer the variations of local stresses in a reservoir.

Purpose It is the purpose of this paper to describe the application of underground conveyor systems to the transportation of ore in the Sullivan mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of "Canada, Limited, at Kimberley, British Columbia. General Applications Conveying has been recognized as a means of underground transportation for a great number of years but only during the past fifteen to twenty years has there been any extended application of the method to underground metal-mine operations. Coal miners became conveyor conscious before metal miners. Probably one reason for this is the fact that there are more flat coal seams than flat orebodies. A second reason is that coal is light and is a less abrasive material than most metallic ores. The vast improvements made in belt construction during the past few years, together with improvements in mechanical conveyor equipment, have gone a long way in making this form of transportation attractive to the metal miner. In new mines being opened today, or in major extensions to older mines, the possibilities of conveyor transportation should receive serious consideration. There may not be any widespread application of the belt conveyor as a replacement for the conventional hoisting and locomotive haulage. Where there is an application, tl1e saving in cost can be appreciable and many operating ad-vantages gained because of ease in operation.

The ACACIA Reactor - Introduction What is it? The Acacia Reactor is a fluidized bed high intensity cyanide leaching system. Purpose for its existence? The Acacia Reactor was developed to treat high grade gold concentrates generated from primary gravity concentration systems. Why intensively cyanide leach a gravity concentrate? Current secondary upgrading processes, such as tabling, create significant losses of fine gold that is initially recovered in the primary gravity concentration units. Additional benefits include improved security and a reduction in health hazards associated with calcining.

Ombrotrophic Sphagnum peat bogs have a characteristic signature on both colour injrared film (750 nm to 3,000 nm response) and Daedalus injrared line-scanner images (thermal infrared 3 to 5 microns and 8 to 14 microns response). This remote sensing method was used to survey bogs in southeast Manitoba to delineate targets for surface exploration. Target bogs all have a surface growth of Sphagnum; underlying dead Sphagnum ranges from 1 to 6 m thick. Large Sphagnum reserves exist in the Caribou cluster of bogs, and in /979 a bog first identified by infrared sensing was brought into production.

"An adequate level of R & 0 is crucial to achieve gains in productivity and to strengthen Canada' s position in an increasingly competitive world ." So stated Finance Minister Jean Chretien in his April 10, 1978 budget speech, on announcing a new measure designed to increase the productivity of Canadian industry and to assist in the creation of new technology. The effect of the new measure, which permits an income tax deduction of 150% of certain research and development (R & D ) expenditures , can reduce the after-tax cost of a marginal dollar 's worth of such expenditures to as little as 20 cents . This article discusses the income tax treatment of R& D expenditures in general, and describes in particular the income tax incentives which relate to R& D.

"IN 1975, Nova Scotia produced 1.8 million tons of coal with a FOB mine value of $47.6 million. Of this total, about 30 per cent or 600,000 tons was coking coal and the remainder was steam and industrial-grade coal. The Nova Scotia Power Corporation consumed 630,000 tons in three generating stations and 570,000 tons were sold to Sydney Steel for making coke for its steel operations. Exports, principally to Great Britain, comprised 370,000 tons in 1975 in addition to the 300,- 000 tons shipped to other provinces for use by cement and pulp and paper companies. In 1975, just over 100,000 tons of coking coal were imported into the province from Alberta. Before 1975, low-volatile coking coal was traditionally obtained from the United States. In 1975, production came from seven individual mines and one project involving reclamation from mine dumps in Pictou County. Of the seven producers, four are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, a federal Crown corporation; the remaining three are small independent mines, but, even though small, they are sizeable contributors to the economies of their local areas. After 101 years of continuous operation, Devco's Princess mine was closed in 1975. The Nova Scotia coal industry, in terms of value, accounted for about half of total mineral production in 1975. The industry provides jobs for 3,000 men and women. It is also significant that in 1975 Nova Scotia produced about 6.5 per cent of Canada's total coal production of 28.3 million tons. "INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

Mineral and energy resource consumption were continuously reduced by process improvements as chemical understanding was developed and applied. During the past two centuries, technological improvements increased human productivity that was accompanied by social advances and labour saving products; however, these sometimes proliferated to endanger sustainability, e.g., automobiles. In the steel industry, precisely controlled rolling of HSLA steels required little extra mineral consumption but reduced weight and heat-treating energy. Continuous casting of slabs reduced scrap compared to ingots and energy for the homogenizing soaking pit. Al alloy extrusions were improved by retaining the strengthening in the near-surface substructure, of high strength textures and of press quenching that is suitable for direct age hardening. Continuous bar casting of Al-0.65Fe, coupled with rod rolling and followed by wire drawing with only a final recovery anneal, yielded electrical wiring for households to replace less plentiful Cu and later for light-weighting use in autos and aircraft Looking backwards, the 1970 decade saw the first oil crisis and inspired Ottawa to undertake a campaign to develop an energy strategy that would decrease dependence on imported fuels. One significant undertaking under Energy Mines and Resources was the organization of industrial energy conservation, managed by each industry association,that collected detailed current statistics and set the goals for a 2-year campaign. The metal producing industries, as compared by E.C.N. Perryman to about 7.2 exajoules (EJ) for the nation, consumed about 0.8 EJ, being about one third of all heavy industries. While manufacturing consumed 30.2% of total energy, it created 87.3% of total national dollar value. Within the industrial envelope, smelting and refining utilized 28% (0.67 EJ, mining beneficiation 6.7%, 0.16 EJ); there was a significant contribution to exports: 80% of iron ore and 70% of aluminium in 1973. A general concern was that decreases in ore grade would lead to a rise in energy expenditures countering benefits from processing efficiency.

"A central composite experimental design was used to determine empirical relationships between the operating variables of a ball mill and the characteristics of the ground products. The independent variables selected for the study were the work index and size distribution of the feed material, the feed rate and the pulp density. The measured responses included product size distribution, product surface area, viscosity of pulp discharge, weight of dry solids in mill, mill time constant and emitted sonic vibrations. The ball mill was operated continuously in open circuit during each experimental run.Multivariable regression techniques were used to derive linear empirical models from the experimental results. Of the four factors studied, the grindability of the feed material significantly affected every measured response. The size distribution of the ground product was affected significantly by the feed rate and the size distribution of the feed, but not by the pulp• density. Feed throughput capacity and pulp density were significant to the viscosity of the pulp discharge, the weight of solids in the mill and the mill time constant. Significant first-and second-order models are given for the above relationships. The relation-ships between the characteristics of the sonic vibrations of the operating mill and the various dependent variables have not as yet been established."

Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company is on the east side of Howe sound, some twenty miles north of-Vancouver. The camp is served by two settlements, one at Britannia Mines townsite, approximately three miles from the water's edge at an altitude of 2,100 feet, the other at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound. The first discovery of copper ore on the property was made in 1888, but it was not until 1905 that production started. From that year until the end of 1944, production had totalled 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,126 ounces of gold from six orebodies, known as the Victoria, Empress, No. 5, Fairview, Bluff, and Jane. No. 8 orebody, with which this paper is concerned, was discovered in 1937 by diamond drilling from the 4100 level, some 300 feet above sea level. Development of this orebody to the end of 1944 had included the sinking of a shaft from the 4000 to the 5250 level, and a limited amount of stoping. This work has delimited the orebody from the 3800 to the 4950 level and has indicated upwards of 1,000,000 tons of copper-zinc-gold ore. It is planned to commence production in the near future, while continuing exploration of the orebody at depth.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. "In 1969, the Environmental Science Division of James F. MacLaren Limited received authorization from The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited to carry out a water quality monitoring program in the Lake Shebandowan region of Ontario, where a new base metal mining and milling complex was expected to go into operation in 1972. The objective of the program is to establish base-line water quality characteristics. Fully realizing their corporate responsibility to minimize the effects of the proposed activities on the environment, Inco decided that it would be desirable to establish a program by which any change in the quality of environmental waters will be detected before detrimental conditions ensue, permitting prompt corrective measures to be taken. The program has been in progress for over two years. The waters are sampled and analyzed four to six times per year. Sampling stations are located in Lake Shebandowan and on the adjacent Gold Creek - Matawin River system. On-site analyses and measurements are made of flow, dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH. Samples also are collected for later analysis in the laboratory. These samples are analyzed for a wide range of chemical and biological characteristics. The paper discusses the extent of the sampling program, the techniques utilized and the value of such programs in maintaining the quality of the environment."

"Since 1999, COREM (formerly the Centre de Recherche Minérale) has conducted and coordinated research and development activities for a consortium of mining companies that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive research. In particular, COREM’s “In Situ Optimization Group” is involved in the development and implementation of modem information technologies related to process optimization and control.The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of such technologies applied to mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer to the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM’s members and are grouped into three main modules:- R&D Module: research and development in universities and research centres;-Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support;- Training Module: education of new engineers in universities and continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops.This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project, presents its main objectives and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are outlined, the first applications at COREM’s member plants are presented and, finally, future developments are discussed."

"The automotive industry is under a constant pressure to reduce the weight of vehicles in order to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. As such, there is an ever-growing demand for high strength and high ductility steel grades to meet the need for lightweight automotive components. Over the past decade, the production and application of 2nd and 3rd generation Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) as a lightweight material in automobiles has gained significant popularity due to their exceptional mechanical properties. However, the production cost of these high manganese steel remains high, partially due to the need of large amounts of ferromanganese as alloying material in standard steelmaking processes.The current study introduces a new and cost-effective technology for the production of medium- and high-manganese steels, where self-fluxed micro-pellets of manganese ore will be used as the source of manganese that can be injected into the steel bath. Prior to injection, these pellets are subjected to a pre-reduction process using a mixture of H2 and CO gases, where partial metallization of iron and manganese will occur. Direct injection of the pre-reduced micro-pellets provides less volatilization/emission and higher recovery of manganese, and is capable of producing AHSS with 6–18 wt% Mn.INTRODUCTIONAutomakers are constantly searching for lighter, stronger and cheaper materials in an effort to create safer and more fuel efficient vehicles. The introduction of aluminum alloys and polymer composite materials for automotive applications has been carving into what is traditionally one of the most profitable markets of the iron and steel business. The steel industry responded with Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS)—a family of manganese containing steels which exhibit exceptional strength and ductility."

The original JKMRC AG/SAG mill model was developed over 30 years ago and has been upgraded a number of times since then, with the current published version being the Variable Rates model that is now over 15 years old. Since this model was developed further enhancements have been derived, some of which are applied in-house and some which have yet to be incorporated. The published and the commercially available model in JKSimMet is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul with a vastly extended data base for model evolution and validation. Improvements developed within the AMIRA P9 project, in-house development and a number of collaborative projects, are being incorporated into the upgraded model structure. Enhanced capabilities will include: power-based breakage rates scaling; a far wider mill filling range (from 10% to 40%) that exhibits peak in throughput as mill filling increases; higher ball loads; improved pebble discharge function; improved slurry discharge function incorporating important mill design and operational influences; and the new size dependent breakage function. The model will also be able to accommodate some influence of liner design and multi-component ores (blends of hard and soft components). This upgrade is still a work in progress but substantial changes have been made to date. This paper presents some of the new improvements and their influence on the predictive capability of the model.

"On August 3, 1888, German Patent No. 43977 entitled ""A Process for the Production of Aluminum Hydroxide"" was issued*. The discovery which led to the patent was made by the Austrian chemist Karl Josef Bayer (1847-1904) (Fig. 1) who was at that time in Russia, and the process became known as the Bayer Process in his honour(1)(2)- The process imediately achieved industrial success, displacing the pyrometallurgical process that had been used until that time to produce alumina. The Bayer Process involved the pressure leaching of bauxite with NaOH solution to obtain sodium aluminate solution from which aluminum hydroxide was precipitated by seeding. Today bauxite is not only the principal source of aluminum but also of gallium, both metals being effectively recovered by the Bayer Process. The purpose of this paper is to outline the historical background of this discovery and its importance to hydrometallurgy."

"Since the most of mineral processing are wet, and for more specific applications where it is necessary to increase the purity through leaching and / or concentration, the proper dispersion is the first, and perhaps more crucial stage in the whole chain of processing. This specific process is based on the formation of a dispersion or suspension of mineral, trying to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible, and with specific rheological conditions. Sometimes it is not enough agitation to make it happen, so that chemical additives are used as an aid. However, the addition of chemicals strongly alters the viscosity and other rheological properties of the suspension factor to consider for subsequent steps to ore beneficiation. In other hand, in a process where no chemicals used often employ large quantities of water to achieve dispersion. But if an efficient chemical agent, which optimizes said dispersion through a specific physicochemical effect on the particle surface is used, also it can generate rheological advantages, besides achieving rational use of water and increase the recoveries of the product main about also optimal costs. The aim of this work is to find the optimal rheological conditions for a dispersion of kaolin as study case, looking for stability, best disaggregation, viscosity and pseudoplasticity.To find the optimal additive, the evaluation parameters were: 1) Best degree of dispersion of the suspensions according to the analysis of the flow curve; 2) Best level of disaggregation of particle chemical analysis delaminated by Particle Size Distribution; and 3) Best thixotropic rheological parameters and pseudoplasticity. Finally the optimum additive as one that meets the best combination of parameters is proposed.INTRODUCTIONKaolin is a clay material formed by altering of feldspar composed mainly for kaolinite. Depending on the application, the kaolin as raw material must be refined and processed because the ores of clays contain usually a lot of impurities derived of its sedimentary source, such as feldspar, mica and quartz (Torres, et. al., 2011). According to the experience on the plant floor and the publication of several scientific papers, it is known that the dispersion is a crucial stage in mineral processing (Greene, Duke, & Hunter, 1965) (Raghavan, et. al., 2004), not only because of the disaggregation of particles, besides because of the humectation of them. Is clear that disaggregation of particles give to the suspensions rheological stability, and the humectation improves the effect of further processes like grinding or chemical treatment. The dispersion process involves making a suspension of the mineral with a solvent which is usually water, to obtain a homogeneous dispersion, with the aid of energy of stirring. Sometimes is not enough the agitation (even with high energy) for this to occur, so is necessary the use of dispersing substances which introduce ions and molecules as modifiers of chemical potential, forcing the molecules of the material to disperse. Sometimes their use even could affect the pH of the suspension in a non-desirable condition. (Flores, 2013)."
