"The recycling of aluminum materials is a green industry while Al–Si–Fe is a typical scrap aluminum alloy. The key point of recycling Al–Si–Fe alloys is to separate Al and Fe. A method by introducing Al–Si–Fe alloy into Mg melt has been investigated in this work. A separation layer with gathered Fe–rich and Al–poor Fe3Al0.7Si0.3particleswereobtained at the bottom of the cooled ingot, indicating that ß–Al5FeSi phase evolves to Fe3Al0.7Si0.3,and quantities of Al are released to the upper Mg matrix simultaneously. However, the evolution of Al3Fe by adding binary Al–Fe alloy into Mg melt is different. It is supposed that element Si plays an important role in the phase evolution procedure, thus affects the performance of this method.INTRODUCTIONThe rapid development of aeronautic, automotive and aerospace technologies strongly depends on the consumption of materials while sustainable development is the future direction. Aluminum is a recyclable material and Fe is one of the most common impurities. Fe can be introduced into Al alloys by adding low–purity alloying materials and by using unprotected ferrous crucible, tools, or equipment (Belov, Eskin, & Avxentieva, 2005; Lu& Dahle, 2005).For instance, wear–resistant rings are usually inserted into piston head when producing Al–Si pistons and an infiltration procedure by putting the cast iron rings into Al melt before casting is always essential. As a result, both the re–melting of pistons and the reuse of Al melt for infiltrating rings lead to the enrichment of Fe element, which can be even high to5 wt.%(Viala, Peronnet, Barbeau, Bosselet, & Bouix, 2002).It is widely known that coarse ß–Al5FeSi particles will form in high Fe–contained Al–Si–Fe alloys which is harmful for the mechanical properties. In the past decades, several methods to eliminate the harmful effect of ß–Al5FeSi have been investigated which can be widely referred (Munson, 1967; Lee, Kawamura, Inoue, Cho, & Masumoto, 1997; Suárez–Peña& Asensio–Lozano, 2006; Eidhed, 2008).These methods can be divided into two kinds. One is to aggregate and remove the Fe–rich phase through the methods of centrifugation, gravity filtration or magnetic separation. The other way is modifing the morphology of flake–like ß–Al5FeSi by overheating the melt or adding neutralized elements. However, these traditional methods are rarely used due to respective disadvantages, while the commonly used method in industries is using primary aluminum for dilution. However, only less than 30wt.% of scrap Al can be added into primary Al melt for each melting work while it also results in the decrease of product quality simultaneously(Zhang, Liu, & Liu, 2016)."

Transmission of vibration to the operator from percussive vibrating tools is increasingly of concern in industrial and mining applications. Prolonged exposure to high levels of vibration transmitted via the hand causes disorders known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The vascular component of HAVS is called vibration white finger (VWF) and has a debilitating effect on the hand. Vibration at frequencies below 1250 Hz, a tight hand-grip force and cold environments are reported to increase the likelihood of developing VWF. A vibration damping handle design with patents pending that addresses some of the causes of VWF has been developed and retrofits onto jackleg pneumatic rock drills. The handle is decoupled from the drill while maintaining jackleg twist-grip controls on the hand-grip using a combination of sealed self adjusting hydraulic pistons and compliant materials in series, and a new air control valve. The ergonomics of the hand-grip was also modified by the addition of a polyurethane sleeve with a diameter of 50 mm. The new hand-grip reduces direct cold metal contact and minimizes grip force. Measurement of vibration as the quantity acceleration was made in accordance with international standard ISO 5349. Overall vibration damping in all axes of 50% to 63% was attained at frequencies below 1250 Hz. The dimensions of the damping handle are comparable and its weight is only 100 g heavier than a standard handle.

"The North Star and Don Jon copper deposits lie beneath the waters of Thompson Lake, which is 12 miles east of Flin Flon, Manitoba. The deposits were discovered during the years 1949 and 1951 by diamond drilling done in the vicinity of pyritic showings on the shores of two small islands in the lake. The Don Jon ore body lies 1, 700 feet southeast of the North Star orebody and is connected with the North Star mine workings by a crosscut on the 600-foot level (Figure 1 ).Production began on January 1, 1955, at a combined rate of 200 tons per day. The ore is trucked, on 24 miles of highway, to the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited mill at Flin Flon.Regional GeologyRocks in the Thompson Lake area are Precambrian volcanics, ranging in composition from andesite to rhyolite, with related tuffs and breccia. These rocks have a general north-south trend and are steeply dipping. The area is part of the Lac Aimee fault block, which probably is the southward extension of a south-plunging syncline now thrust some miles to the north. This regional deformation has produced many subsidiary zones of intense shearing and crumpling. It is in two of these zones of shearing and drag-folding that the orebodies occur. The only recognizable intrusive is a narrow diorite sill which trends northeasterly near the west shore of Thompson Lake.The North Star MineA pyritic showing, carrying some chalcopyrite, was discovered around the year 1930 on the west side of a small island near the west shore of Thompson Lake. This ground was included in a group of claims acquired by the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co., Limited in 1947.In the years 1949 to 1951, a diamond drilling program outlined a copper sulphide orebody. This ore zone comes to surface beneath the lake, about 300 feet north of the pyritic showing on the island."

A newly discovered East zone is being de veloped by open pit. The raw Henderson talc is a foliated talc schist of high purity and whiteness; Conley talc is a white talcose dolomite. Products are used primarily as fillers in paints, plastics and rubber.

"When confronted with the difficult decisions on advancing an exploration project to the feasibility and construction stages, it is important to know how various regions of the ore body will react in the milling and concentration processes. While bench scale test work is common and inexpensive, the results and information provided are somewhat limited due to the difficulty in accurately predicting the effects of recirculating middling streams or gradual changes in solution chemistry.Conventional Pilot Plants, processing 100 to 1,000 kg/hour of sample ore, provide the detailed engineering data required to develop a final process flowsheet and to size the equipment. They are, however, expensive to set-up and operate, and are really only viable for major projects that are well advancedIn the latter part of 1999, the Mineral Development Center at CVRD (MDC) purchased a new piece of mineral processing equipment which can run continuous flotation tests using drill core samples. To evaluate its performance, and to compare it with conventional testing methods, various types of flotation tests were carried out using two different types of copper ore. The limitations and advantages of open circuit and locked cycle bench tests, as well as the Mini Pilot Plant and the Conventional Pilot Plant were evaluated.Open circuit tests carried out at the bench scale only provide basic information. More complete and trustworthy information is obtained, in terms of the recirculation of flows and reaching a permanent and stable flotation regime, as the dynamics and complexity of the tests increases. The data obtained showed that the MPP’s metallurgical performance was equivalent to that of a conventional pilot plant."

"A key barrier to vertical mineshaft construction is the construction access required for workers. A suspended work stage is used to provide this access for the mechanical, electrical and structural applications and other tasks. Work stage design is complicated considering the numerous types of construction activities that are executed simultaneously, the confined environment in which the work stage operates, the significant corrosion attack that is present, the weight limitations imposed by the mechanical hoist systems, and the risks associated with worker safety. Also complicating the design, these structures and their construction environment can vary with time. Hence, they can be described as 4D structures. The author has discovered significant synergies and advantages with integrating engineering design with detailed three-dimensional (3D) fabrication design. The significant reduction of minor design errors needing field correction will be underscored. The tender process is also accelerated since the design output is fabrication shop drawings including a detailed quantity takeoff output which lists each component required and its specific quantity. The paper presented will document the numerous advantages to the project using this approach. This teamwork may or may not be present and is dependant on the experience and relationship the team members have working together as well as other factors."

"Large-diameter flotation columns are subject to severe axial mixing which has reduced column recovery and has generally limited it to cleaner applications. It has been assumed that columns with diameter greater than 1 m should be baffled to reduce axial mixing, but little work has been reported quantifying the effectiveness of baffling. Tests were done on a 0.2 m by 2 m column fitted with baffles of different geometry. It was generally found that the inclusion of baffles in the column worsened rather than improved mixing conditions in the column. This is explained in terms of a model for the effect of poor gas distribution on the behaviour of the column; this showed that under typical conditions a 16% excess of gas flux in the one compartment of a two-compartment column could result in one of the compartments being ""dead"" (i.e. with no net flow of slurry through it), resulting in a substantial loss of performance. The quality of mixing in the laboratory column was only reliably improved when the baffle was raised so that its top was positioned above the froth-slurry interface level. It should be possible to increase column recovery substantially with this configuration. The improved residence time distribution also means that columns can be used more effectively in roughing and scavenging applications. IntroductionFlotation columns have generally been used in cleaner applications, starting with their dramatic success at Mines Gaspe(1). Their lack of applications as roughers and scavengers is probably due to their poor residence time distribution (RID) when compared to the conventional cells they would replace. Espinosa-Gomez et al,(2) recently used them in rougher applications but installed three columns in series, presumably to cope with this disadvantage.Dobby and Finch in their seminal papersl(3,4) on the scale-up of flotation columns were the first to quantify the impact of axial mixing on the performance of industrial flotation columns. Laplante et al.(5) collected further data from the literature for column diameter D, ranging between 5 cm and 183 cm, gas superficial velocity Jg ranging between 0.7 cm/s and 2.8 cm/s and per cent solids in the feed S ranging between 3% and 52%. These data were analyzed with reference to the axial mixing model using the boundary conditions for closed vessels (the latter are more appropriate for flotation columns but the model is more difficult to use because analytical solutions for the RID are not available). The rougher flotation stage is used to reject liberated gangue at a coarse size. Base and precious metals due to their high specific gravity tend to recycle in the grinding circuit and report to the flotation circuit at a finer size than the gangue from which it is being separated. Generally liberation levels of greater than 50% are achieved in roughing and thus a portion of the feed can be immediately upgraded to final concentrate. The proportion increasing as the amount of liberated mineral in the feed increases. Scalping out concentrate from the rougher can reduce the size of the subsequent regrind and cleaner circuits. Examples of alternative process design for circuits demonstrates that you don’t need large volumes to effectively recover all of the minerals – you need smart flotation. Several case studies will be presented where circuits can be significantly reduced in size by designing smarter – not larger. This paper describes case studies to test the amenability of the Jameson Cell to produce final concentrate from rougher feed. Metallurgical performance and plant design implications are discussed. Froth flotation has been used extensively for mineral concentration for over 100 years. Although the flotation cell design has changed, it has generally simply increased in capacity rather than increase in efficiency. Cell capacities of over 600 m3 are now being used in rougher flotation particularly for the lower grade ores where the amount of surface area for flotation is deemed less significant than the required volume. The plant design volume in rougher flotation comes from laboratory batch flotation tests and/or pilot plants. The volume required for the plant is calculated based on the laboratory residence time multiplied by a scale- up factor. Examples of laboratory to plant scale-up design are given in Dunne et al. (2010 part 2). The factors are usually between 2 and 3. A laboratory residence time of 10 minutes would equate to a plant design residence time of 25 minutes using a 2.5 factor. The volume of the required flotation cells can then be calculated using the design tonnage and volumetric throughput. This scale-up factor takes into account the differences in performance between batch flotation efficiency and full scale plant. The differences are likely related to inefficiencies of bubble particle contact in large cells as well as froth recovery, which is essentially complete in a batch cell. Flotation cells, such as the Jameson Cells, are smarter designs that improve bubble/particle collection, bubble/pulp separation efficiency and operate with high froth recovery rather than simply getting bigger. The Jameson Cell was designed on the principal of improving the collection efficiency of fine particles by separating the contact zone from the separation zone and having the bubbles generated by the plunging jet shearing and entraining air. This means the method of bubble generation is not impacted by the wear of mechanical equipment as it the case in other flotation devices. Jameson Cells make bubbles less than 600 micron in size under most operating conditions (Ding, 2016).

IN a recent paper on Roasting of Beattie Concentrate (1), the importance of controlling the temperature, and the sulphur dioxide concentration was pointed out. It is the purpose of the present paper to present further information by which the most satisfactory conditions for roasting are more specifically defined. Incidentally, a method of illustration is developed for representing roasting curves on a three-dimensional diagram. The primary purpose of this investigation, as in the case of the earlier work, was the search for information that would be of practical value in improving plant operation and gold recovery. For this reason, emphasis is laid on the regulation of essential variables and on definition of their optimum values and limits for maximum gold recovery in the subsequent cyanidation process. Good roasting is considered at least as much an art as it is a science, and, in this light, theoretical consideration of the nature and sequence of the chemical reactions involved is of secondary importance. The presentation which follows includes a series of graphical illustrations, an interpretation of the graphs, some theoretical considerations, and a description of laboratory technique.

"Haldor Topsoe’s Wet gas Sulfuric Acid (WSA) technology has been proven in a number of industries converting sulfurous gasses to concentrated sulfuric acid. In the metallurgical sector plants have been delivered handling SO2 gasses from copper, zinc, molybdenum, and lead ore. WSA has high energy efficiency and allows autothermal operation from feed gas strengths as low as 3.0% (volume). Recent variants of the WSA process have been developed that allow very high SO2 conversion efficiencies of over 99.9%. This paper describes the technology, its advantages and industrial achievements.The WSA technology is well suited for production of concentrated sulfuric acid of commercial quality from the sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas that inevitably emerges from the metallurgical processes. Some of the features that make the WSA technology attractive for this application are:- High SO2 conversion rates (up to 99.99%)- High energy efficiency leading to a low autothermal point (~ 3% SO2)- No need for gas cooling and drying to produce concentrated sulfuric acid- No production of waste- Very low cooling water consumptionThis paper describes the WSA process principles and highlights features that make this process attractive for handling SO2 gases."

"This paper describes, for the first time, a patented method of extracting sodium sulphate from a natural deposit in Western Canada. The method resembles, but is not, strictly speaking, solution mining. The fact that a plant based on this method has been in successful operation since late 1969 will be of added interest. The deposit in question is located near Metiskow, Alberta, and conventional surface recovery methods could not be applied because of heavy concentrations of mud. Considerable pilot work went into the separation and recovery process on which the plant operation is based. The history of the industry is covered briefly as background to this development. Today it is clear that the method has broader application within the industry and, in concept, may generate interest in many other applications."

"According to the characteristics of rock mass and the directional cutting technology of water jet, a new idea of light shock controlled blasting with water jet slotting was put forward. Based on the fracture mechanics theory and the stress wave theory, the mechanism of damping with water jet slotting was analyzed. On the basis of the above, the evolution law of the pressure wave and displacement field during the blasting were simulated by FEM software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The result shows that: the oriented slot plays a good role in orientation during the blasting, and makes the energy generated by gas released by the explosives gather at the tip of the oriented slot, which makes it easier for the main crack to expand along the oriented slot and indirectly reduce the stress effect on the protected object. Meanwhile, the energy of the seismic wave is reduced while transmitting through damping slot. Finally, compared with the normal blasting with damping ditch, the maximum acceleration is reduced by 15.62%, the maximum velocity is reduced by 52.99%, and the maximum displacement is reduced by 68.32%. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, with increasing demand for energy and space, an increasing number of underground projects have been under construction. Drilling-blasting method, as a traditional main method for rock excavation, is still an indispensable means in the engineering construction. As is known, blasting vibration will cause the deformation and unstable of the existing building structures, so how to reduce the influence on the existing building structures caused by the blasting vibration has become the focus. Traditional shock absorption measures mainly include three kinds: the first one is pre-splitting blasting, the second measure is to change the parameter of explosive filling, and the last one is to excavate damping ditch between the protected object and blastholes. However, engineering practices show that: the protected rock may be damaged in the process of pre-splitting crack construction by blasting, the second measure is difficult in operating, and the third measure is troubled by large work quantity (Song Guangming, 1999; Lou Jianwu, 2004; Lou Jianwu, 2005; Li Xibing et al., 2008)."

The Cassiar Asbestos mine is situated on McDame Mountain in northern B.C. at a mean elevation of 6000 ft (1830 m), some 6 miles (9.6 km) from the townsite /mill complex. Asbestos ore production averages 1,200,000 tons at 9% R.M.G. (Recoverable Mine Grade) and waste production is 6,000,000 cu. yd annually. Waste is loaded by P&H 1900 AL 11-cu.-yd shovels and transported by 75-ton and 85-ton end-dump trucks to the waste dumps. The ore is loaded by a 992 Caterpillar 10-cu-yd front-end loader into 50-ton and 75-ton trucks, which transport it to the crushing plant located at the mine. The ore is transported by a 15,370-ft (4685-m) tramline to the mill complex.

"SAG/AG mills have been most common choice in grinding circuits last decades. In the most cases, at the discharge of SAG/AG mills, a trommel screen is used that is equipped with baffles to provide appropriate residence time and improve separation efficiency. Using baffles, with the resultant maintenance requirements could lead to decrease in mill availability. In this research, an innovation in the structure of baffles of a trommel is presented. The results show that using new baffles led to 67% decrease in SAG mill downtime due to problems of baffles and 80% decrease in fine particles on recycle conveyor.INTRODUCTIONComminution is a vital operation in mineral processing circuits and it helps to achieve a certain level of fineness in the ore material. About 60-80 % of the overall energy used in mining is consumed in comminution, and this is the reason that much research has been performed in this field (Kochnev, 2008).During the last decades the configuration of grinding circuits has been changing due in large part to the decrease in the grade of mineral resources and the need for large scale, energy efficient processes. The previous configuration of conventional grinding circuits was based on parallel primary circuits (mostly using ball mill), such as the grinding circuit of Sarcheshmeh concentrator plant no.1 (Figure 1). The new configuration of grinding circuits is based on using SAG/AG mills, such as Shahrebabak concentrator plant (Figure 2), sometimes incorporating new technologies like the HPGR. Nowadays, application of new configuration of grinding circuits using large SAG/AG mills up to 40 feet (Allan, Major, Flintoff, Klein, & Mular, 2006), in the minerals industry is continuing increase due to the significant reduction in capital and operating costs, and increase in the plants throughput (Banisi & Hadizadeh, 2007)."

Arsenic is a compound that has no significant market value. However, it needs to be removed from ores, concentrates and other process streams because of environmental or technical processing concerns. A wide range of arsenic containing minerals exists in nature, and in many instances these minerals are also associated with the ones that have commercial value. For example, sulfide copper ores are normally closely associated with minerals like enargite, Cu3AsS4 and tennantite Cu12As4S13. After mineral processing these arsenic sources can report to the waste waters and these effluents need to be treated before discharge or recycling. Ferric arsenate precipitation is a well-established method for stabilizing arsenic in effluents. Electrochemical arsenic removal utilizes the same adsorption/precipitation ideology as ferric arsenate precipitation. Electrochemical arsenic removal, even though it is a simple process in terms of equipment, is a complex system involving chemical and physical mechanisms taking place simultaneously to remove dissolved and/or solid arsenic components from wastewaters. The whole process can be described by the following three steps: 1) electrolytic oxidation at a sacrificial anode (dissolving electrode metal, iron for example), 2) chemical reaction between dissolved iron and arsenic to form a solid precipitate and 3) aggregation of the particles to form flocs, which can be removed by known solid/liquid separation methods. Electrochemical arsenic removal is a very efficient way to remove arsenic from different waters to very low residual concentrations.

The current version of the JORC Code was issued in 2004 and since that date the Australian Securities Exchange, in collaboration with JORC, has issued a number of companies? updates to provide guidance on various reporting issues. An interim review will be undertaken during 2010 to meld these updates with the current 2004 Code. This will be followed by a full review during 2010/11 covering all aspects of the Code and focusing particular attention on: ? clauses / guidelines relating to Exploration Results1, exploration targets and the reporting of historical estimates; ? issues relating to the Public Report2, including definition, the requirements for Competent Person sign-off, level of disclosure and mandatory requirements; ? guidance on techniques to quantify resource / reserve estimation uncertainty; ? the level of study required to convert Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves, and disclosure of prices and economic factors; ? expansion of the requirements for reporting of marketable material for bulk commodities; ? the use of language and tone that anticipates new and emerging technologies and techniques for the qualitative and quantitative measurements of data; and ? linkages to valuation and the valuation code (The VALMIN Code). Although the Canadian and Australian reporting regimes for public statements on Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral (Ore) Reserves are similar in intent and coverage, they differ in detail, sometimes substantially. Canadian requirements are generally more wide-ranging and prescriptive than Australian requirements, including in the need in many situations to publicly lodge a Technical Report, a requirement that does not exist in Australia. Australian-listed companies seeking to list in Canada, and Competent Persons seeking to act as Qualified Persons in Canada, need to ensure that they are fully conversant with Canadian regulations and how they differ from those in Australia.

"A significant area of Outotec’s business involves fluidized bed roasting. With several decades of experience, more than 300 reference plants and strong R&D capabilities, the company provides several industries with optimum processing solutions. Applications include oxidation and sulfation of sulfides found in copper, pyrite and zinc concentrates. Gold production and de-arsenifying roasting are also within this scope. This paper describes the latest furnace developments and includes novel trends. Moreover, hot and wet gas cleaning systems are examined focusing on unit operations related to the removal of components such as dust, SO2 for sulfuric acid production, fumes, halides, Hg, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and metals.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, when defining roasting processes, it can be stated that the respective primary pyrometallurgical reaction is exothermic, of gas-solid nature and relates to a value solid product. These processes are a key focus within Outotec’s scope and include: (i) dead roasting (ii) sulfating roasting (iii) partial de-arsenifying roasting and (iv) two-stage, de-arsenifying roasting.Dead roasting involves the oxidation of a given sulfide, thus allowing for a subsequent leaching process, and has been applied to producing ZnO. Dead roasting of pyrite has also been extensively utilized with a primary goal of producing sulfuric acid. In contrast, sulfating roasting involves converting a sulfide to its sulfate, enabling a selective sulfation of components, such as Cu or Co, and their separation from ferrous components during leaching (produced sulfates are soluble). Partial roasting involves partially oxidating the metal sulfide to its oxide with the simultaneous production of gaseous As4O6, which is handled during gas cleaning. The solid product, containing hardly any As, is rich in S and can be fed to a respective smelter (e.g. in the case of Cu). Coking coal producers often encounter variations in clean coal quality when mining multiseam deposits containing coals with different washability and coking properties. This paper describes how, for a single coal property, an initial clean coal specification with an ash content of 8.5% on an air-dried basis (ADB) and a free swelling index (FSI) of 5.5 can be improved to a specification with 7.5% ash content ADB and an FSI of 6. This is accomplished by sorting coal seams into two groups for processing and blending. A preliminary economic model demonstrates how this improvement enhances economic returns through a beneficial factor.

"THE need for continuing education has been recognized only in fairly recent years as a major concern of the engineering profession. Formerly, it was acknowledged that engineers were required, at least informally, to follow the professional literature and to give some attention to new technical and technological developments. However, those relaxed days, when progress could be followed in a casual or incidental evening of reading, have disappeared in these days of mushrooming information. The engineer is now in the position of the man trying to control the flow from a fire hydrant with a child's pail. Our problem is that of developing an effective flow system -be it trough, hose, pipe or a bigger pail.The first step in achieving an effective means for continuing the education process is to realize that the need for the system is really an outgrowth of an increasingly sophisticated society. It is merely one more symptom of that society; others would• include the facts that new engineering graduates are more highly trained than those of several years ago, that graduate schools are now the norm and that even some fairly recent technologies are becoming outdated. There-fore, let us examine the education-al systems from which the bulk of the increasing sophistication has grown."
