Intrusive features of cupriferous noritoids from the deeply eroded Proterozoic granite-gneiss terrane of the Okiep Copper District in South Africa illustrate the emplacement of basic magmas into a mid- to lower-erustal environment. The small, easterly trending intermediate to basic intrusions of the so-called Koperberg Suite display a wide variety of geometries, occurrence and emplacement modes, including dike-, sill- and plug-like bodies. Coeval granulite-facies metamorphism, partial melting and ductile deformation of country rock gneisses during intrusion of the basic magmas led to emplacement and dilation processes of the intrusions which differ significantly from those described for dikes and sills at shallow crustal levels. Regional tectonic stresses are largely negligible due to very low differential stress [( )] during deformation and intrusion, which permits emplacement at high angles to the principal compressive stress and which follows favorably inclined structural anisotropies. Dilation of the basic intrusions is largely determined by compositional differences of host rocks and occurs by thermal erosion, i.e., assimilation of wall rock gneisses. Low length-to-width ratios of basic to ultrabasic dikes and predominantly diapir-like outlines of mesocratic bodies are indicative of low viscosity contrasts between the mafic magmas and high-grade metamorphic host-rock gneisses. Buoyancy-controlled ascent of the basic to intermediate intrusions is expressed by a broad compositional zoning of basic bodies with respect to the granite-gneiss stratigraphy. Various intrusion modes within the stratigraphic column of the granite-gneiss sequence reflect a lithological and structural stratification of the seemingly homogeneous granite-gneiss terrane.

"The increase in the price of gold in the last decade has led to a significant increase in placer gold exploration around the world. Placer deposits occur in depressions along ancient river and stream channels. In many instances these channels have been covered with materials from subsequent erosion or glacial activity. Use of high resolution geophysical techniques to map the bedrock and soil strata can improve the probability of finding the placer deposits. The buried bedrock surface is often the factor controlling deposition. Ground probing radar (GPR) and seismic sounding are complementary high resolution techniques which can be used to map bedrock topography and soil stratigraphy. Current radar instrumentation operates best in coarse grained soils. Penetration depths of up to 30 m have been attained, and stratigraphic horizons have been mapped with spatial resolutions of better than 0.5 m. Although its spatial resolution is considerably lower than radar, seismic refraction achieves superior penetration in electrically conductive environments such as clay and silt soils. The seismic refraction method thus proves to be complementary to the radar method. The seismic reflection technique is analogous to the radar method. Current seismic instrumentation and energy sources however, provide limited spatial resolution and do not permit the use of seismic reflection for reflecting horizons lying at depths of less than 20 m to 30 m.This paper discusses the use of both radar and seismic methods for placer exploration. The radar and seismic techniques, the field methods, equipment, and data displays are presented. Field examples illustrate the high resolution mapping capabilities of the techniques. The radar data agree very well with the borehole data, and in fact they sometimes detect subtle soil strata variations associated with changes of permeability that were not initially observed in the borehole logging. The radar method can give a continuous profile of water table and bedrock in sandy soils. Seismic soundings are necessary to differentiate between the bedrock and water table reflections observed by the radar."

The microstructure in modified semi-solid ALTHIX (A356) alloy consists of aAl phase with Al/Si eutectic structure. Silicon phase in eutectic structure is coral like with fine fibers. The lack of good ductility in this alloy is related to the presence of silicon fibers. Accordingly many investigations have been recently conducted to modify the Si morphology through Thermomechanical processing on this alloy. In the present work an ALTHIX (A356) alloy was deformed at 450°C, 500°C and 540°C through different strain rates. Consequently the silicon fibers were broken into small particles. The results indicated that the Si particles may coarsen according to Ostwald ripening mechanism at 540°C deformed by rate of0.0005 sec-1 & 0.0001 sec-1-

"The property is about 120 miles north of Red Lake in the Favourable Lake area, district of Kenora ( Patricia part) , Ontario. The original discovery was staked by K. Murray in December, 1927. The first development work was done by the Favourable Lake Mining and Exploration Company. In 1936 Newmont Mining Corporation acquired control of the property and developed it to production by September, 1939. Production to the end of 1945 had a value of $7,534,656 from 441,457 tons of ore, an average value of $17.04 a ton . This production was mainly from gold and silver, with lead and zinc of subordinate importance.The rocks in the vicinity of the mine trend in a north-south direction. From east to west the sequence is: (1) A dark-coloured, massive rock, presumably a flow, composed mainly of quartz and biotite. ( 2) A buff- coloured, scricitized rock locally containing quartz phenocrysts and black hornblende. This is an alteration product of the dark variety and is later than the folding. It occurs mainly within the dark rock. (3) A series of sediments comprising thin beds of greywacke, grit, quartzite, conglomerate, and iron formation. ( 4) A gabbro sill, now largely altered to amphibolite.With the exception of the buff type, these rocks dip 80°E. The buff rock has a very irregular outline in comparison with the other rocks and appears to dip somewhat more flatly east. Felsite and diorite dykes are also present. These have a general strike of S.60°E. and dip 65°S .W. A post-ore diorite dyke trending N.15°E. occurs about 2,000 feet east of the mine area."

"Smelting of copper concentrates in the flash smelter generates a flue dust stream that contains a substantial amount of copper and accumulates more than half of the arsenic input to the smelter. In view of its high copper content flue dust recirculation to the flash smelter is common practice. Globally traded copper concentrates are affected by ever increasing arsenic contents and cause an increasing circulating arsenic load in flash smelter operation. Control of the arsenic level in the smelter slag becomes a challenge. This interaction of arsenic loaded copper feedstock, need for flue dust recirculation and slag quality control call for possibilities to reduce the arsenic load of the recirculated flue dust stream.The technology of partial roasting is known from pre-treatment of copper concentrates before smelting, and gold concentrates before cyanide leaching, to remove the harmful element arsenic. The partial roasting technology can be adapted for use in the purification of the flue dust. A major challenge for flue dust treatment is its extremely fine particle size compared to usual concentrates. For this reason Outotec developed a new process, which allows handling of such fine flue dust. This process solution provides an efficient possibility to reduce the arsenic burden in copper smelter operations.The suggested process aims at reducing the arsenic load to the smelter by treating the flue dust prior to recirculation to the smelter. The presented results are based on test work in the Outotec R&D-centre in Frankfurt. It is possible to remove 80-85% of the contained arsenic and to collect it in an arsenic trioxide residue with a concentration above 90%. The final off gas contains SO2 from decomposition of sulphates that are contained in the flue dust. The off gas stream is relatively small. We assume that it is possible to combine the off gas stream with other smelter process gas streams and to treat it in an existing sulphuric acid plant. Coal is used as fuel and as reductant to reduce pentavalent arsenate to trivalent arsenite. Arsenite can be kept in gas form at temperatures above 450°C. This permits separation of a calcine stream with arsenic levels of 0.2 – 0.3%, which is recirculated to the furnace.Outotec has a wide range of roasting testing facilities from lab-scale to pilot-scale. Outotec has both capability to modify and adapt technology to specific ore or concentrate requirements, but also the necessary infrastructure in its research centers in Frankfurt and Pori to do appropriate validation tests in lab and pilot scale size plants."

This paper outlines the position and capabilities of Western Canada's bituminous coal industry, and indicates the increasing importance of Japan as an export market. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Following this, iron ore gradually found a market in Japan, with exports usually based on long-term contracts. Industrial practice in mineral processing shows that an important problem in understanding and monitoring in-mill parameters is due to the lack of fundamental knowledge and appropriate sensors. However, over the last decade, Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling has shown an interesting potential in describing the fundamentals of grinding mill behaviour, in improving the understanding of internal grinding mill dynamics, and in developing solutions to industrial practice. With the objective of bringing this modelling technology into the concentrator control room to assist operators, this paper aims to describe the main elements needed to apply this emerging and developing technology to on-line mill performance monitoring.

Ion Exchange (IX) using Strong Base Anion Exchange (SBA) resins is conventionally used to purify uranium from sulfuric acid pregnant leach solutions (PLS), particularly when uranium grades are relatively low. However, the presence of chloride in the PLS interferes negatively with conventional SBA based IX processes, by reducing the uranium loading on the resin. Chloride can be present in the PLS due to the use of saline bore or seawater in leaching, or chloride containing leach/IX reagents. ANSTO has been examining strategies to combat this problem for several years. ANSTO previously reported that a recently developed high-capacity SBA resin was capable of extracting uranium efficiently from saline leach liquors produced at Boss Resources’ Honeymoon in-situ recovery mine in South Australia. The resin was tested successfully in a 2017 Field Leach Trial carried out onsite in the existing wellfield area. While the piloting was extremely promising, the elution was more challenging, with eluate tenors limited to 2 g/L U3O8 using NaCl. This is due to the resin’s strong affinity for the uranium complex, which makes it difficult to elute efficiently by standard methods. In this paper, we describe a novel elution process developed for strong base resins that significantly improves upon conventional methods. The process, developed by ANSTO, is based upon conversion of the extracted uranyl sulfate species to uranyl carbonate, followed by elution with sodium chloride. The loading and elution process was demonstrated in continuous locked-cycle piloting conducted at ANSTO in 2019. The results were excellent, with eluate tenors of 8–9 g/L U3O8 achieved from Honeymoon PLS containing 50 mg/L U3O8, with very little transfer of impurities. In subsequent test work, the eluate was shown to be amenable to uranium peroxide precipitation. The results represent a huge step forward for the purification of uranium from saline leach liquors.

Trend surface analysis was used to investigate the geochemical dispersion patterns of Si, Ai, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Ti and Rb in the footwall of the Seneca massive sulphide prospect in southwestern British Columbia. Surfaces for various element ratios were also produced to see if the distributions of the elements are related to each other. Trends developed by the elements redistributed during hydrothermal alteration may be difficult to detect for various reasons, such as too few and widely separated sample points, random analytical errors or local variations in rock chemical composition that are not related to regional trends. Trend surface analysis is useful to distinguish regional trends from local fluctuations. The computer program used in this study is capable of calculating surfaces up to the 6th degree polynomial, but provides for automatic termination when the variables in the equation for successive surfaces become effectively collinear. With the relatively small number of data points used (21 samples) in this study, such termination occurred after the quadratic surface. Results show that, at the Seneca prospect, Mg and K increase, and Na and Ca decrease, toward a common centre which corresponds closely with the best drill-core intersections of ore. The centre is interpreted as a volcanic vent and as the source of mineralization . Quadratic surfaces for element ratios show that K/Ca decreases and Fe/Mg increases away from this vent. Thin-section and X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that these variations reflect sericitization of plagioclase and an increase in the Mg content of chlorite near the vent. The mineralization , rock types and element dispersion patterns at the Seneca prospect are similar to those reported for volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits at Bathurst, New Brunswick, and in the Hokuroko district of Japan.

"Geological exploration involves the collection and analysis of a wide variety of information. A basic problem in interpretation is to determine the interrelationship s of the different data. A number of statistical methods can be applied to this problem, provided that subsets of data can be selected.We have recently developed a set of interactive computer programs which provide the cap ability to quickly examine a large set of data, and may be used by people with little previous computer experience. There are two main stages in using this system. First is selection of subsets of data , by applying various tests on the values of given items. This includes matching specific entries in descriptive fields, and minimum - maximum tests on numeric fields. The second stage is basic statistical analysis and data display , including histograms, 2-D scalier plots, probability (cumulative frequency) plots, and correlation matrices. All output can be viewed on a computer terminal, and important parameters changed to produce the most effective display for use in interpretation.This system has been applied to a number of different exploration problems. An example was the determination of the nature and extent of mineralization of a gold prospect in the Queen Charlotte Islands, from drill-hole data. With the aid of the computer programs , a mineralized zone was defined, and locations for further exploration identified."

"High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) technology, although developed over 2 decades ago, has not been widely applied to the separation of sulphide minerals. Under conditions of strong magnetic field gradients, weakly magnetic minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and marmatite (Zn(Fe)S, sphalerite with iron in solid solution) behave paramagnetically and can be effectively separated from diamagnetic minerals such as galena (PbS). The application of this technology to the separation of Cu-Pb and Zn-Pb bearing streams in the treatment of fine grained complex sulphides may in some cases be more effective than separation by flotation. A 2 TPH Sala HGMS pilot plant was operated at Brunswick for a nine month period, ending in March 1995. The testing demonstrated the mechanical reliability of the technology, the consistency of operating results and the scale up from laboratory testing. HGMS is seen as a complimentary technology to flotation, best suited to performing those separations of galena (and other diamagnetics) which flotation does not do as well.IntroductionBackgroundSince the turn of the century, the magnetic character or magnetic susceptibilities of minerals have been determined with increasing precision and accuracy. Figure 1 illustrates specific magnetic susceptibilities of some common minerals. As long as susceptibility ranges do not overlap, separation is possible.In 1937, the principle of using a magnetizable matrix material in a magnetic field to increase both magnetic flux density gradients and number of capture sites for susceptible minerals was first applied (Frantz). It was not until the 1970's, however, that the genuine development of wet high gradient magnetic separation began with the introduction of very fine matrix materials to the magnetized volume of large solenoid magnets. Today, dozens of HGMS units purify, filter and separate minerals, primarily for the removal of iron stained minerals from clays used in the paper coating and china clay industries and for the recovery of fine titanium and iron oxides in the iron ore industry. Only the Garpenburg mill in Sweden is currently applying a continuous HGMS machine to separate complex sulphide minerals; upgrading a lead concentrate since 1988."

Aur Resources is Canada's leading copper mining company with producing mines and development projects in North, Central and South America. Copper production from Louvicourt Mine in Quebec, Quebrada Blanca and Andacollo Mines in Chile was a record 245 million pounds in 2001. Located 600 km North of Montreal, Louvicourt Mine is a joint venture between Aur Resources (30%), Novicourt Inc (45%) and Teck-Cominco (25%). Aur Resources is the mine operator with 280 employees working to produce a copper and zinc concentrate. In operation since 1994, the mine has produced a total of 12,606,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 3.6% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 26 gr./m.t. Ag and 0.9 gr./m.t. Au. This highly mechanized mine reached full production in August 1995 at 4,000 tpd. From 1996 to 2001, the average mine production rate was more than 4,300 tpd. The Louvicourt Mine continued its record of solid performance in 2002 and is expected to continue to do so for the balance of its 2.5 years mine life.

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. "In a recent publication (SAG 2015), we presented a non-conventional high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball mill circuit as a lower capital cost alternative to the “standard” HPGR circuit. The circuit was designed for the treatment of a hard ore and relatively high tonnage (50,000 t/d). That paper provided details such as flowsheets, layouts, and equipment lists for the two options and compared their calculated capital costs demonstrating significant savings for the proposed circuit. This paper extends the analysis to a third option, a traditional semi-autogenous ball crushing circuit, giving the same level of details and now including the operating cost estimates for all three options for a more comprehensive analysis. Moreover, this work also provides information about the strengths and weaknesses of the non-conventional HPGR circuit when compared to the “standard” HPGR option.This study demonstrates that the proposed non-conventional HPGR-based circuit not only provides a lower overall capital costs for the project if compared to a “standard” HPGR circuit but also brings the capital cost to the level of the traditional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG)-ball mill circuits. In addition, the innovative HPGR circuit provides similar operational cost savings of the “standard” HPGR and thus a significant advantage when compared to the SAG option. With the current capital cost sensitivity for most greenfield projects, the proposed alternative circuit should help make HPGR-based circuits more competitive and thus promote the utilization of a technology that enables higher energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. INTRODUCTIONThe application of high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology in comminution circuits is well established for the processing of cement, diamonds and iron ore (Broeckmann & Gardula, 2005), and over the past 10–15 years, this technology has slowly been applied to hard ores in high-tonnage precious and base metal operations. Unfortunately, under the current economic climate, the ability to finance large capital projects has become very difficult and companies tend to have an easier time securing funding if the capital expenditures (CAPEX) are low with a proven process method. The traditional semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill / ball mill circuits easily fit into this mould, having been installed in countless plants around the world over the past 30 years with relatively low capital requirements. In contrast, it has been well-documented that HPGR-based circuits are capital intensive with complex material handling systems (Seidel, Logan, LeVier, & Veillette, 2006). Although these circuits benefit from reduced operating costs with the increase in energy efficiency and the elimination of steel grinding media (Rosario, Boyd, & Grundy, 2009), if the company is unable to secure financing to build the plant, these advantages remain out of reach. With the current trend to retrofit existing SAG circuits with a secondary crushing circuit to achieve design throughput, the opportunity to circumvent this gross inefficiency by making HPGR-based circuits more capital friendly would greatly benefit the industry."

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. In the conventional alkaline leaching of concentrate containing nickel, copper and cobalt, copper is usually removed from the system, prior to nickel reduction, by sulphide precipitation. A new process is described for the selective extraction of copper and separation from cobalt and nickel, using liquid-liquid extraction. General Mills LIX-63 dissolved in a kerosene diluent is the extractant. Trace amounts of co-extracted cobalt and nickel are easily removed by a scrub treatment, and copper is recovered from the extract by sulphuric acid stripping, thus providing a solution amenable to the oroduction of electrolytic copper. Estimated processing costs are included together with a proposed flowsheet.

"Mining with blast holes drilled upwards may be done to recover sill pillars, or for economic reasons when the distance between the levels is relatively large. If the rock is sufficiently competent to accommodate large stope size, the distance between sublevels could be increased to as much as drilling accuracy allows. The same drill drift can be used for the drilling of both down holes and up holes. In the case of down holes, the initial opening of the stope (drop raise) is not as much a problem as for the inverse drop raise for mining with up holes. This is because, with a drop raise, a lot of space is available at the toe for the blasted rock to expand. In addition, the raise can be blasted in many shots, thus allowing smaller blasts each time. Inverse drop raises are generally much more difficult to blast because of the limited space for muck flow, and must, therefore, be taken down in a single blast, requiring special considerations in order to ensure a success. A case study of a 29 m (95 ft) inverse drop raise successfully blasted in a single shot at Heath Steele Mines is described. The paper covers technical considerations such as drilling accuracy, hole deviation survey, delay extension and protection, initiation methods and initiation sequence. Finally, a novel method for creating the initial opening called ’slot drilling’ is presented. This method, inspired from LKAB in Sweden, consists of drilling a row of interconnected holes using a special guide mounted on a regular production drill hammer.With a case study of blasting an inverse drop raise of 29 m (95 ft) in one blast, this paper further discusses some technical issues that are critical for the development of inverse drop raises. A novel method for creating the initial opening with a slot of interconnected holes is also presented with the experience acquired at different mine sites across the Noranda group."

"The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited lies on the western tip of a large peninsula midway up the east shore of McTavish Arm, Great Bear Lake, about 30 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The mine is serviced by air, 950 miles from Edmonton, and by water, 1,380 miles from Waterways, Alberta.The veins were found, and the copper and cobalt minerals in them reported, by J. MacJntosh Bell of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1899. The veins were investigated by Gilbert Labine and E. C. St. Paul in 1930, and as a result of their work the Eldorado mine was brought into production in 1934. It produced silver and radium ores until 1940, at which time, as the silver orebodies had been mined out and the market for radium was negligible, it closed down. Early in World War II the need for uranium for the Manhattan Project was emphasized, and the mine was reopened in 1942. As a security measure Eldorado Mining and Refining was created a Crown company in 1944. The Port Radium mine has continued to be one of Canada's principal producers of pitchblende concentrates, and to date has about 25 miles of underground workings developed on fourteen levels.Regional GeologyThe general geology of the McTavish Arm area was mapped by D. F. Kidd in 1932 on a scale of one inch to four miles. A great deal of more detailed work has since been done by geologists of the Geological Survey and of Eldorado. The entire area at the end of McTavish Arm lies within the Precambrian Shield immediately east of its western margin. Most of the area is underlain by granitic masses which have intruded a sequence of late Precambrian sediments, volcanics, and hypabyssal intrusives. The pre-granite rocks now occur in extensive, irregular patches and pendants within the granite. Pitchblende deposits have been found in the district in all rock types, but the most favourable host rocks are the cherty sediments of the lower Echo Bay group."

It is well known that there are many ways to process copper concentrates into copper anodes using the pyrometallurgical route. All modern copper smelting technologies are fundamentally energy efficient and environmentally safe options, and therefore choosing one depends on the desired capacity range, feed impurity levels, plant location, flexibility needs, overall energy use, and of course smelter economics in both the short and long term. This paper focuses on comparing different solutions which have potentially the lowest variable opex (operational expense), meaning in practice finding out which technology offers the best chances for profit maximization under certain scenarios. For the comparison, we chose to have a closer look at Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Outotec- Kennecott Flash Converting (FCF), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Outotec Ausmelt TSL Converting (ACF), Mitsubishi Smelting Process (MIT), Bottom Blowing Reactor (BBR) – Bottom Blowing Continuous Converting (BCC), and Side Blowing Furnace (SBF) - Top Blowing Converting (TBC) since these seem to be the main state-of-art technologies now being applied in many recent copper smelter projects around the world. The work was carried out by modelling each smelting route by using the new HSC SIM 9 simulation software and applying operation time, energy, and consumables consumption numbers for each unit process and stream. Combined with cost data, the exercise produced a rich set of information which will be shown in detail for each area per scenario. The authors’ goal here was to provide a fair comparison where each technology can be evaluated from various perspectives such as electricity use or refractory consumption. INTRODUCTION Copper can be produced either pyrometallurgically or hydrometallurgically. The hydrometallurgical route is used only for a limited amount of the world’s copper production (~20%) and is normally only considered in connection with in-situ leaching of copper ores. On the other hand, most of the copper extraction from Cu-Fe-S minerals is pyrometallurgical (~80%) (Schlesinger 2011, ICSG 2017). IN the presentation of this paper to the Institute, three objects are in the mind of the writer: first, to set forth the close relation which, of necessity, exists between ceramics and the industrial minerals; second, to clarify the apparently hazy understanding which many have of ceramics in general; and lastly, of equal or even more importance, to stimulate a greater interest in the industrial minerals, especially in those used and required by the ceramic industries. While Canada is now producing in large quantities a fairly wide variety of the ceramic industrial minerals, there are some which are not known to occur in the Dominion. Hence it is to be desired that our geologists, prospectors, and others, while on field work, should be on the look out for commercial deposits of such minerals as diaspore, bauxite, ucts of a value in excess of $600,000,000, a figure which places ceramics as kyanite, massive topaz, and sillimanite. A find of any of these in quantity would prove of very great importance and value to the country as a whole. At this point it seems desirable to introduce formally the word ceramic or the plural of it, ceramics. In doing so it may be stated that the origin of the word dates far back in history in that it was derived in part from the Greek word Keramos, 'a potter' or 'pottery', which in turn has been traced back to an older Sanskrit root meaning 'to burn' or 'burned stuff', having reference, no doubt, to burned pottery or other clay wares; and the word was so used until near the close of the last century, when the world's first schools of ceramic engineering were established in the United States. The use of the term ceramics was then expanded to cover a much larger field the entire field of the silicate industries and products. At one time it was suggested by a limited number of ceramists that the term 'ceramic engineering' be changed to 'silicate engineering'. This proposal, however, gained little support and was soon abandoned.
