Shotcrete is a practical and economical support system in many Canadian underground mines. Although shotcrete technology has gained acceptance in the mining industry, there are some problems that have emerged with respect to quality assessment and thickness measurement of the liner. This paper presents recent tests performed with miniature seismic reflection technology (MSR) developed and patented at McGill University primarily for thickness measurement of this heterogeneous liner. MSR is also capable of providing information regarding the quality of shotcrete in terms of its mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. Work was performed on site in an underground mine in Ontario, Canada. This paper also presents the results from laboratory tests performed on fiber-reinforced and non-reinforced shotcrete panels that were used to assess the P-wave velocity in both materials. The results of these tests were used in a second site investigation. The NDT thickness measurements showed good agreement with direct thickness measurement such as coring. In addition, the MSR technology has the advantage of being more accurate and more affordable compared to other non-destructive testing (NDT) systems in the market.

"This paper summarizes the work carried out to develop and implement the gold cyanidation by size class (CSC) process, a novel concept aiming to reduce cyanide consumption.First, the authors will present the methodology and results of laboratory tests conducted to evaluate the response and the expected gains for the selected ore when submitted to the CSC processing. In the second part, focus will be on the methodology behind the CSC scheme development prior to its implementation at Sleeping Giant Mine concentrator. Finally, the evaluation of the modified circuit performance (operating since July 2007) will be addressed as a reduction of cyanide consumption by more than 30% and of free NaCN in the tailings by more than 50% is confirmed.INTRODUCTIONCyanidation is the most widely used technique to extract gold from hard rock ore. Its use of oxygen as an oxidant still makes it the cheapest process available after more than a hundred years. Unfortunately, gold cyanidation is known to be a slow process that requires high consumption of cyanide. In fact, cyanidation plants are designed with very long residence times (Habashi, F., 1967). Drawbacks of long cyanidation times are, among others, loss of gold in tailings, high reagent consumption and high capital investment and maintenance costs.Responding to their members expectations for the improvement of cyanidation process, COREM undertook a challenging R&D program covering the development of alternative concepts (processes) and the understanding and solving of mass transfer, gold passivation and process water chemistry problems. One of the interesting findings of the R&D program is a patent pending process technology based on the cyanidation by size class (CSC) concept (Côté and Ourriban, 2004; Gagnon and Ourriban, 2007; Gagnon and Ourriban, 2004).The new technology was tested at the Sleeping Giant concentrator, a plant member of COREM. The existing flowsheet was modified in order to implement the CSC process in the full-scale plant. The plant has been operated using the modified CSC based process since August 2007. Laboratory testwork was conducted prior to the industrial application in order to properly design the new process scheme. The modifications included:1) Reclassification of the grinding circuit product through an hydrocyclone2) Leaching of the coarse size fraction3) Addition of the fine fraction to the coarse leaching circuit tails."

Barrick's Zaldivar operation in Chile produces copper by heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The heap consists of a dynamic pad, and its stacking and operating conditions have changed over its 11 years of operation. These changes have included pad re-mining midway through the cycle, tightening of the irrigation drip lines, an increase of the coarseness of the particles, and an increase of the heap height. This paper reviews the heap operating data to understand the effects of these changes on the kinetics and recovery of copper minerals. Field tests demonstrated that neither re-mining nor tightening the irrigation grid added value for both low and high grade oxide and sulfide ores. The P80 of the feed ore was increased by 0.8 mm, which did not reduce the copper recovery of oxide and sulfide ores. The increase of the heap height above 8 m lowered moderately the copper recovery from sulfide minerals, and very slightly the recovery from oxide minerals. Despite the lower recovery, the higher tonnage stacked in the taller heap increased the copper output. Optimizing the chemistry of the agglomeration and feed solution holds more promise for increasing the copper recovery than the above physical changes.

Production in copper electrorefining tankhouses mainly depend on two factors: The deposition area, which is a result of the amount of installed cells and cathodes, as well as the current density - the amperage per square meter of deposition area. The present paper shows, that the most economical way of achieving a certain production is to maximize current density by using the METTOP-BRX-Technology - as building and infrastructure can be kept more compact. This industrial proven technology applies a parallel electrolyte flow in each electrolysis cell. In 2011, the first fully industrial applications started up: At the secondary smelter Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, 156 cells are equipped with the METTOP-BRX-Technology; this allows a current density of 390 A/m². Xiangguang Copper Co., Ltd. - a primary smelter and refinery - operates its new tankhouse (720 cells) at 420 A/m²; this stands for an production increase of 50% compared to the same sized ISA tankhouse which is limited to 280 A/m². The first part of the present paper gives a cost comparison between a conventional copper electrorefining tankhouse and a high current density tankhouse when assuming a Greenfield project. The second part describes the cost savings when installing the METTOP-BRXTechnology in an already operating tankhouse.

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

A representative sample of ramming paste from a peripheral seam in an aluminium electrolysis cell was taken in order to develop a process to fabricate ramming paste samples in the laboratory. To this end, paste material was compacted in multilayers in a mould designed to be representative of peripheral seams in Alcoa's smelters. The density distribution in the representative sample was measured ranging from 1.51-1.76 g/cm3. The density range obtained by the proposed methodology in laboratory is 1.47-1.77 g/cm3. The results demonstrate that the proposed fabrication method adequately duplicates paste density from the cell for both one and two layer compaction. Finally, preliminary results related to the compressive strength and Young's modulus of laboratory samples were obtained at various temperatures and are presented in this paper.

This paper focuses on the dissolution of various Manganese based compact additions into liquid Magnesium. The experimental procedure employed cylindrical compacts with various Manganese compositions. The various temperatures of the additions and the Magnesium bath were measured simultaneously during the immersion of the additions into Magnesium bath. The exothermicity level of these additions during their dissolution into liquid Magnesium was determined. The relation of the exothermicity level with the dissolution kinetics was also examined. In addition, SEM and EDX work was conducted for additions, which were withdrawn from the Magnesium bath. Finally, the recovery of these additions was estimated by taking samples from the Magnesium bath and conducting ICP analyses.

The flotation separation of salt type calcium minerals is problematic, due to the similarities in their formation properties and the same active Ca2+ related site for interaction with anionic collectors and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, point of zero charge, surface speciation, Ca-site density. The work was performed to achieve effective and selective separation of the calcium-minerals using pure minerals samples: four calcite, two fluorite, and two apatite samples. The effect of pure and mixing anionic collectors such as oleic and linoleic acid to different ratio (2:1; 1:1; 1:2) as well as the role of nonionic collectors on the selective separation of Ca minerals were studied. All flotation tests were performed in self-aspirated flotation cell. The results obtained with the blend of anionic collectors with the molar ratio of 2:1 show a separation between apatite and calcite at pH 5 and a ratio 1:2 at pH 9. The enhancing of separation contrast using the sodium silicate as a depressant for calcite and apatite is also examined as a function of oleate/linoleate ratio. Additionally, this paper discusses the enhancing of the selective separation of Ca minerals when anionic collectors were blended with nonionic reagents. The surface reactions in aqueous mineral suspensions and the adsorption of anionic collectors blended with nonionic reagents were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. An unexpected synergistic effect was observed for some ratios between anionic and nonionic reagents. The mixture of fatty acids and nonionic reagent showed very high flotation efficiency in comparison with fatty acid alone for the flotation of an igneous low-grade phosphate ore.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. (1.16% V2O3) pour 20 analyses]. Ainsi, la magnétite est le principal minerai de vanadium; elle renferme du vanadium sous forme de V3+ et non de V5+, tel qu’il a été communément et à tort rapporté. Newmont&apos;s Phoenix Project is located near Battle Mountain, Nevada and is scheduled to produce copper concentrates containing high precious metal values. High temperature pressure oxidation (PDX) of the concentrates was considered as a treatment option during process development. The metals content in Phoenix concentrates range from: 15-25% for Cu, 1-10% for Zn, 0-2% for Pb and ?27% Fe. The precious metals content of the Phoenix concentrates can range up to ?300 g/t Au and >3,000 g/t Ag. As a consequence it was necessary that any process for consideration should have the capability of recovering both the copper and precious metal values. Typically, gold can easily be leached from the autoclave discharge solids, but silver is chemically bound with the jarosite formed and cannot be directly leached. Laboratory investigations led to the development of a patented PDX process that minimizes the formation of jarosite so that the silver can be leached easily along with the gold. The process was confirmed with extensive pilot plant testing. Excellent solution extraction of copper and zinc was achieved, and both iron and lead were precipitated in the PDX residue. The process produces clean PDX discharge liquors with very low iron concentrations. As an example, conventional PDX techniques resulted in pregnant liquors containing ?5 g/L Fe. However, the Newmont process, which controls the iron and sulfate species, achieved high iron precipitation in the PDX solids and pregnant liquors containing <0.5 g/L Fe. High gold and silver recoveries were achieved by direct cyanidation of the PDX solids. This process has the added benefit of producing PDX solids that demonstrate superior settling and filtration characteristics.

"Large scale rock slides in deeply incised Alpine valleys are common hazards that can endanger human life, settlement areas and critical infrastructure such as highways, railways and reservoirs (Bonzanigo et al., 2007). In order to perform reliable forecasts of the behaviour of rock slides influenced by large dam reservoirs the geometry, the kinematics, the deformation behaviour and the hydrogeological situation need to be understood profoundly. Based on generic rock slide models the influence of the rock slide geometry on the stability as well as the impact of the buoyancy forces and water load of the reservoir at the toe of the slope are the main focus of this study. Various assumptions of hydraulic conductivity, groundwater conditions of the rock slide and impoundment depth of the reservoir are analysed using limit equilibrium approaches.Generally, deep seated rock slides are characterised by deformation along one or multiple shear zones where most of the measured total slope displacement localizes. Many large rock slides, especially those observed in foliated, mica-rich crystalline rock masses (e.g. paragneisses, mica schists, phyllites), do not fail suddenly or reach high velocities. Instead, many of them move slowly and reach velocities of centimetres per year or even less. Some show episodic accelerations, sometimes reaching alarming levels, but then subside to non-critical levels again. However, there is a potential that deep-seated rock slides fail rapidly, develop into far-reaching run-out rock flows, and cause catastrophic events. Whereas the role of triggers in promoting phases of acceleration is often understood, the same cannot be said regarding the kinematics and dynamic processes by which the rock slide mass decelerates, re-stabilises or accelerates to a catastrophic degree once the trigger impetus has been removed. Thus key questions of the presented work concern the geotechnical, geometrical and hydrogeological conditions under which a slowly moving rock slide is triggered to accelerate to irreversible, maybe dangerous velocities. The development of the sliding zone is generally influenced by pre-existing discontinuities such as brittle fault zones, shear and tensile fractures, foliation and bedding planes. These geological structures determine the geometry of the sliding zone which can either be rotational or translational. During the gravitationally induced failure process the geometry of the rock slide undergoes a change.Several observed post-failure geometries in metamorphic rocks show a concave topography in the middle to upper part of the rock slide and a typical convex or bulge-like topography at the toe of the slope (Zangerl et al., 2012). Whereas the sliding zone of the upper part of such a rock slide mass is rather steep and planar, the inclination of the sliding zone at the toe can be close to zero and act against the driving forces (Alonso et al., 2010). A shear zone that meets alluvial deposits at the foot of the slope encounters a stabilizing impact on the mechanical behaviour. This buttressing effect of alluvial sediments has a remarkable influence on the slope stability."

This paper summarizes current underhand paste backfill mining as applied to Goldcorp Inc?s Red Lake Mine, Newcrest Mining Ltd?s Kencana Mine and the Lanfranchi Nickel Mine as well as ongoing research at the University of British Columbia?s Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. The Red Lake Mine utilises a 6 m wide undercut with a 2 MPa unconfined strength paste in order to selectively mine its high grade, high-stress orebody. Kencana?s orebody is located in a poor rock mass environment. An 8 m wide, 2 MPa unconfined strength paste sill allows a safe working condition for its high grade orebody. The Lanfranchi Nickel Mine utilises a cable-supported, 2 MPa paste, with 12 m span sills, to optimize the mining of the squeezing rock mass. This paper details the rock mechanic hazards, ground support techniques, paste practices and unique conditions for each mine. Further, an update of ongoing research at the University of British Columbia, focussing on the optimization of safe mining in underhand cut-and-fill mining in high-stress/weak rock masses, is presented.

"IntroductionIndustrial minerals include a group of more than fifty minerals which are marketed into almost all the sectors of industry; they are the backbone of many manufacturing industries. Table I shows major end-uses for industrial minerals in manufacturing sectors.At Energy, Mines and Resources, industrial minerals are divided in three major categories: (I) agro chemicals and chemicals, (2) construction mineral s, and (3) ceramics and specialty minerals. A listing of the major groups of minerals is shown in Table 2.Agro-chemicals and chemicals are sold on the basis of their chemical content and purity. Construction minerals or structural minerals are distinguished by their performance as low cost and bulky commodities. Ceramics and specialty minerals are performance-specific and are sold for their property on imparting functions on end-products. Industrial minerals have unique characteristics that are useful in many stages of processing; from crushed size to micronized fillers a single mineral ca n serve a broad range of industries because of its intrinsic properties.The Industrial Minerals Industry in CanadaCanada has a large industrial minerals base and is a world leader in the production of some of them. The total value of product ion of these minerals has grown by 115% over the last 10 years despite the misfortune of asbestos.Industrial minerals have shown remarkable growth in the past 20 years at an average annual rate of 9.2%, compared to 7.8% for metallic minerals. In 1986, the value of industrial minerals rose to $4.9 billion, or 14% share of the Canadian mineral production. Figure I shows the value of production of the mineral industry for the period 1966-1986.The leading segment in industrial minerals segment since 1976 is the chemicals and agro-chemicals sector which has an average annual growth rate of 5.75 % in terms of value of production. During the same period, the growth rate for the whole Canadian mining industry was 1.37% per annum. The chemicals and agro-chemical s sector increased its contribution to the total value of production of 2% to 6070 despite the growing share of fuel minerals with 59%."

Three nickel based superalloys (7.5%Cr+5%Co+2%Mo+1%Ti+5%Al and Ni balance (wt%)) containing different amounts of W and Re were produced in the single crystal (SX) condition utilizing the Bridgman casting process. First, the effect of different levels of Re, and W on chemical microsegregation were investigated by EPMA quantitative analysis, and eutectic phase fraction analysis. Second, in order to investigate the effect of these refractory elements addition on oxidation behaviour, isothermal oxidation testing of the SX nickel based superalloys was conducted at 1000°C for 277 hours under 3 ppm moisture content of air in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). All three SX nickel based superalloys revealed an excellent SX solidification structure with a common primary dendrite arm spacing of -250 µm and a large fraction of ?/?&apos; eutectic located between the secondary dendrite arms. From the average EPMA compositional results, with the exception of Ni, elements such as Cr, Co, Re, Mo, and W all tended to segregate towards the dendrite core during solidification, while Al, Ti, and Ta were present in greater quantity in the last liquid phase to solidify, which resulted in large eutectic ?/? &apos; phases to form within the interdendritic regions. As the nominal level of Re increased, microsegreagation of Re, W, Cr and Mo increased, indicating that Re had a much greater influence on partitioning behavior compared to W. Figure la shows the specific mass gain as a function of exposure time for each alloy. An alloy with 2wt% of W and Re (Alloy B) exhibited less weight gain compared to two other alloys with either higher content of W or Re (Alloy A and C). Microstructural and compositional analyses of oxidized samples were conducted using SEM and EDS. Figure lb shows the typical surface morphologies of the oxidized Alloys A and B. It is evident that more oxide nodules (indicated by arrows in the figure) were presented in Alloy A. It is speculated that the amount of these nodules was responsible for more mass gain in Alloy A compared to the two other alloys. From the examination of the longitudinal section of the oxidized samples as shown in Figure 2, for Alloy A, nodules actually penetrated deep into the material. For Alloy B, however, a relatively uniform and continuous oxide layer was developed and deeply attacked areas were not observed. It was also found that preferential oxidized regions were located at the area between the ?/?&apos; eutectic phase and the dendrite arms where the concentration of refractory elements was relatively high. Therefore, it is plausible that the oxidation kinetics of these alloys is related to the extent of microsegregation.

"In kraft pulp mills, the spent pulping liquor is concentrated and used as fuel in the recovery boiler. Extensive deposits are formed in the upper section of the boiler due to the very high ash content of the fuel and the volatite nature of the ash. Deposits are composed of Na2S04, Na2C03 NaCI, some potassium salts and reduced sulphur compounds. Chloride and potassium salts are enriched in the deposits compared to the smelt due to their greater volatility.Severe corrosion of the superheater tubes in a recovery boiler has been traced to three factors: a non-uniform temperature profile in the flue gas, relatively high operating steam temperatures and high chIoride and potassium concentrations in the fireside deposits.The role of chIoride and potassium in superheater corrosion has been explained by increased Iiquid phase in deposits. Together with corrosion studies, this information has shown that kraft recovery boiler superheater corrosion due to the chloride and potassium enriched deposits can be avoided by proper boiler operation and by judicious superheater and furnace design.IntroductionThis investigation of recovery boiler superheater corrosion was initiated by the discovery of severe corrosion of the final stage superheater in a Canadian closed cycle kraft pulp mill(1,2). Metal wastage leading to tube failure was believed to be due to three major causes : the relatively high operating steam temperatures, the uneven distribution of flue gas temperature across the boiler which created a "" hot spot"" and the high chloride and potassium concentrations in the superheater fire side deposit. The mill responded to the problem by i) lowering the superheater steam temperature from 475°C to 380°C, ii) minimizing the chloride content in the spent pulping liquor, by controlling the NaCI input with recovered bleach plant effluent, and iii) changing metallurgy of a portion of the bottom section of the final stage superheater platens from ferritic steel T-22 (2.25% Cr, 1% Mo) to austenitic steel Incoloy 800H (21% Cr, 32% Ni, 46% Fe, 1.5% Mn, 1% Si, 0.6% Al) (Fig. 1). Current changes in our environment demand such a reaction.The changes in our environment include more rap id substitution of materials; a significant alteration in design philosophy; the global economy; and market saturation and market diversification in dev eloped countries.This paper will cover the changes and illustrate how they will affect the Canadian resource industry. "Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours &apos; retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surface disposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. The use of potential control in the flotation of ores has been applied in a variety of operations and presents an opportunity for improvement of selectivity and recovery of valuable minerals. Although it is possible to vary the redox potential (Eh) using chemical additives such as sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide this is more commonly done by varying the pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. The present study involves an investigation into the effect of varying dissolved oxygen concentration, ionic strength (IS) and pH on the flotation response with the aim of application to a South African lead-zinc ore. In all cases the Eh is measured as a function of the different DO, IS and pH values. The main objective was to achieve selective flotation of galena from sphalerite. The first part of the work was micro-flotation tests conducted on single minerals with galena used as the basis for effect of the factors studied on redox potential and ultimately recovery. The DO was varied by alternating between the use of air and nitrogen as the gas source to the micro-flotation cell. PH was varied between pH 9.2 and pH 11.8 using sodium hydroxide. In the first part of this study a factorial design approach was used to determine the interactive effects of the variables tested, viz. DO, ionic strength and pH, on the Eh and on the recovery. Redox potential was measured using a combination electrode made up of platinum wire and Ag/AgCl reference combination. Recoveries indicated that pH had the most significant effect on recovery and Eh. The influence of redox potential on recovery was found to be of relevance to the condition of high dissolved oxygen concentration and less so at low dissolved oxygen concentrations. It was also noted that that the combined interaction between ionic strength and dissolved oxygen concentration had a positive effect on recoveries, however this was not so with Eh. The chemistry of the ions in solution was observed to play a dominant role on the recovery due to changes in solubility arising to pH modification. The longer term objective of this work is to determine the optimal Eh conditions for the separation of galena from sphalerite.

In the decade 2002 to 2012 some 6.7 million tonnes of new copper concentrate production capacity was brought on line, corresponding to 2 million tonnes of contained copper. This increase in concentrate supply necessitated the commissioning of a number of new copper smelters as well as the modernization and/or expansion of existing plants to meet the demand. This paper gives an overview of the copper extractive industry, reviews recent copper production trends and changes in the copper industry, including an examination of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical technology developments. WorleyParsons has supported a number of the projects involved in these developments and this role is briefly discussed. The paper introduces a number of ideas related to possible future directions of the copper industry.
