"SUMMARYIn cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, selected deposits of Potsdam sandstone in the Ottawa-Kingston area were core-drilled and evaluated by CANMET as potential glass and foundry sand. Analyses of cores ranged from 84.6 to 98.5% Si02, 0.09 to 0.65% Fe203' and 0.07 to 2.10% A12°3' The cores were largely composed of white to grey, relatively tough sandstone. Impurities included iron as pyrite, iron oxides and staining on the quartz grains; carbonates as calcite; and aluminum oxide as feldspar. Beneficiation included size reduction to grain size, about 600 um, by jaw, roll and cone crushers, and grinding in a muller-mixer. Removal of fines was achieved by attrition scrubbing and washing. Further removal of impurities was achieved by reverse flotation of pyrite, iron oxide, feldspar, and carbonate minerals employing both anionic and cationic collectors. Flotation resulted in a substantial improvement in the quality of most samples; analyses of quartz concentrates showed 98.5 to 99.7% Sial> 0.022 to 0.156% Fe203' and 0.07 to 0.62% A1203. Further reduction of the iron content by wet magnetic separation and acid leaching also was investigated. On the basis of the samples submitted, sands/ones from six of the seven deposits studied have potential as sources of glass sand. Foundry sand tests were inconclusive because of the small quantities available for study."

"Today's demand for better and more efficient methods inspires new approaches to construction and mine development.A project at Asarco's Aquarius Mine provided a challenge that resulted in the adaptation of a civil construction technique to a mining application.This paper describes the construction of an escapeway shaft to surface from the mine's 150m level. The prime consideration was to provide the most cost-effective method of establishing a shaft collar in the 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden. This problem was resolved with the employment of the drilled in-caisson method.The remainder of the 500ft (152m) deep shaft was raise bored and portable hoisting equipment was used to install a permanentmanway and shaft liner.IntroductionHaving completed the first phase of exploration development in 1982, J.S. Redpath Limited was engaged to carry out an engineering and cost study to investigate the feasibility of re-opening Asarco's Aquarius Mine near Timmins, Ontario. The scheme was to develop the proven ore reserves and proceed with shrinkage stoping while carrying out further exploration development and diamond drilling.One significant and costly component of the project was the provision of an escapeway shaft to supply additional ventilation as well as a second means of egress from the mine. The major complication to this task was the presence of 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden at the site. The first and obvious approach was to use conventional ground-freezing methods as had been employed previously on .this property for the initial development shaft. This being the only ""sure"" method available at the time of the budget estimate, it was used as a basis for the study but its considerable projected cost and time demand inspired further investigation into other possible solutions.After considerable research and several brainstorming sessions, a Redpath team came up with an approach whose basic procedures had been used extensively in the civil construction field, although they were novel to the mining industry."

"In their paper, Marcotte and Boucher (2001) cast some new light on the old problem of 2D estimation of vein-type deposits with thickness and grade of intercepts. Using a theoretical approach, some extensive simulation experiments and the Walker Lake data, they show that the direct approach (interpolation of grade at points on a regular grid) gives better estimates of the true grade at those points than the indirect approach (interpolation of grade x thickness or accumulation and interpolation of thickness) when there is some positive correlation between grade and thickness and that this better performance increases with the correlation of grade and thickness as well as the variability of both variables.We would like to bring some reservations to that conclusion by showing that even if direct point grade estimates are better than indirect ones, it is not necessarily true for block estimates and in particular for the estimated grade of the whole orebody itself."

Prior work on effects of lamellar orientation on creep rates and other mechanical properties have shown that having lamellae parallel to the tensile axis provides optimal creep resistance and good strength. Consequently, a directional solidification system was used to examine the effect of solidification rate on the development of crystals with lamellae parallel to the growth direction. The nominal chemical composition of TiAl ingots was Ti-46A1-2Mo-2Nb (at%) and the ingots were 20 mm in diameter and 180 mm long. The master alloy bars were placed in a high purity yttria mold on a copper chill plate and raised into the hot zone of a Bridgman furnace. The alloys were melted and then directionally solidified at withdrawal rates of 4, 8, and 12 mm/min. As-cast specimens were sectioned at positions of 4, 22, 66, 111, and 155 mm from the bottom of the ingot to evaluate microstructure and crystallographic texture as a function of distance from the bottom of the ingot. The directionally solidified microstructure consists of continuous columnar grains with fully lamellar structure, a network morphology of primary 13, yttria particles, and interlocked columnar boundaries. For all three ingots, the texture at 4 mm shows many peaks, with isolated strong peaks, and a slight tendency toward <111> plane normals within about 20° of the cylindrical axis. At 155 mm, all specimens showed substantially stronger clustering of <111> orientations near the cylinder axis, with the strongest clustering of poles occurring for the 8 and 12 mm/min specimens. Analysis of diffraction peaks indicates that strongly compressive residual stresses in the radial direction are present in the casting. The combined microscopy and texture analysis provides more complete understanding of the processes of directional solidification of TiAl alloys.

This paper addresses recent calls to study the role of the state in private regulation. Using an historical, organizational-field approach, I trace and explain the evolution of public debates and interaction of different forms of regulatory initiatives dealing with Canada?s mining industry. The empirical evidence presented calls attention to the interaction amongst different regulatory forms, as well as the conditions under which the state will encourage fragmented initiatives, rather than facilitate and catalyze regulatory strengthening and consolidation. As such, my analysis: problematizes the underlying assumptions used as a starting point by the growing literature on the role of the state in private regulation; connects and juxtaposes recent scholarship to more established literature on regulatory state failure and self-regulation. I also contribute to the discussion on Canada?s CSR policy, outlining the likely regulatory effects of the current policy framework.

"The Con Mine has been producing gold continuously since 1938. In 1990 laboratory and pilot plant investigations began into the use of pressure oxidation for treatment of an arsenic trioxide waste product from two previous roaster operations on the property. This led to the construction in 1992 of a 96 ton/day plant to treat a mixture of arsenic waste and flotation concentrate from the existing mill. The plant was commissioned in the fall of 1992.This paper describes experience gained in the commissioning and initial operation of the plant. The unique aspects of treating a hazardous waste product are described including special operating procedures to satisfy environmental and employee safety concerns. The paper further describes modifications made to the process flowsheet, to operating procedures and to materials of construction in the early months of operation."

"To investigate the evolution of fluid-driven fracture of rock-like material subjected to borehole fluid pressure and its consequential damage with regard to post-peak stabilization, micro-seismic activities have been monitored using nondestructive technique of acoustic emission (AE) corresponding to the macro-scale complete history of loading curve by setting the hollow cylindrical external circumferential strain to be a closed-loop feedback signal during servo-fluid-driven tests. Development of a novel fluidinduced loading system injected from internal borehole as well as monitoring system were equipped such that the initiation and propagation of micro-cracks enable to analyze experimentally. By programming/controlling either injection rate or fluid pressure, synthetic sandstones with low-permeability made by cement mortar were conducted in this study. It found that both the growth of macro-crack initialized intensively as reaching the breakdown pressure and the micro-seismic activities represented by AE locations show nice agreement. The experimental results in this paper provide better understandings of fluid-driven fracture mechanism.INTRODUCTIONFluid-driven fracture is a process of generating cracks by injecting viscous fluid into solid material. Conventionally, fluid-driven fracture tests have been performed by mining industry to measure the in situ stress (Haimson & Fairhurst, 1969) and fluid-driven fracture has been employed by the petroleum industry to recover oil and gas. Additionally, the mechanism of crack growth or the extension of existing cracks is important to the evolution of volcanic dikes over distances of a few kilometers (Lister & Kerr, 1991; Rubin, 1995), crack propagation in dams (Bolzon & Cocchetti, 2003) and the disposal of radioactive waste (Sun, 1969)."

"Discrete-element method (DEM) modelling is a powerful tool for studying particulate systems within the mineral processing industry. DEM simulations were conducted to investigate the power draw, load behaviour, and impact energy profile of an experimental ball mill under different milling conditions. The variables considered were mill rotational speed (percent critical speed), ball size, and lifter face angle. The simulation results indicated that the grinding efficiency would be enhanced by using 80% critical speed, 30 mm ball diameter, and 45° lifter face angle. These findings can be useful in guiding actual ball milling tests involving an ore sample.RÉSUMÉ La modélisation par méthode des éléments distincts (MED) est un outil puissant qui permet d’étudier les systèmes particulaires au sein de l’industrie de traitement des minerais. Des simulations par MED ont été menées de façon à étudier le profil de la consommation énergétique, du comportement de la charge et de l’énergie de rupture d’un broyeur à boulets expérimental dans diverses conditions de broyage. Parmi les variables prises en compte figuraient la vitesse de rotation du broyeur (vitesse critique en pourcentage), la taille des boulets et l’angle de coupe de la cornière élévatrice. D’après les résultats de la simulation, on pourrait améliorer l’efficacité de broyage en utilisant une vitesse critique de 80 %, un diamètre de boulet de 30 mm et un angle de coupe de 45 ° de la cornière élévatrice. Ces résultats peuvent se révéler utiles pour les essais concrets de broyage à boulets impliquant un échantillon de minerai."

The Manganese division of the ERAMET group extracts manganese ore in Gabon and produces manganese alloys for the steel industry. ERAMET has an economic interest to maximize the ore throughput without reducing the lifetime of its manganese mines. This can be achieved by means of research and development leading to innovative ore beneficiation processes. For this purpose, the ERAMET research center has designed and constructed a new pilot plant for ore beneficiation by physical separation processes. This pilot facility was erected within an infrastructural and synergetic framework, including competencies in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, numerical modelling, analyses and mineral characterization that provide ideal research conditions. After laboratory scale tests, a pilot operation of beneficiation of low grade Mn ore (around 35% Mn) was carried out by jigging of the 1-10 mm fraction. This gravity separation process exploits density differences between the various Mn-bearing minerals such as pyrolusite and lithiophorite as well as gangue minerals such as silicates and iron-hydroxides. Enrichment leads to the production of a marketable product associated with a high mass recovery (53% for the jigging step). However, 20% of pyrolusite and 30% of lithiophorite are lost in the waste. Mineral characterization has shown microtextural complexities, but grinding the ore to approach the liberation mesh was not an option due to commercially defined constraints given by the ferro-alloy industry. Recovery of the Mn-bearing minerals or adjustments of the feed grain size (6.3-10 mm) are two potential areas of process improvements identified by means of Qemscan® mineral characterization. This paper details the process tested on a pilot scale (0.5 t/h), which has led to a significant increase in the beneficiation of a low grade Mn ore.

"Bricks made from local Paleozoic shales, and floor and wall tiles made from imported clays, both established record production volumes in 1985 and are the strongest segments of Ontario &apos;s clay products industries. However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario&apos;s clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario&apos; s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. "The middlings circuit, once called the pyrrhotite rejection circuit, at Inco’s Clarabelle mill was a single flotation stage. It used to process a combined feed consisting of the main flotation scavenger concentrate and the non-magnetic portion of the magnetics flotation circuit tails. The typical circuit metallurgy was 55% nickel recovery at 6.5% Cu+Ni concentrate grade. In the past few years, a research project with the objective of improving the circuit metallurgy was initiated between Inco’s research laboratory and the Mill’s Process Technology group. This project has gone through three steps: a) initial laboratory studies, b) on-site pilot plant investigation, and finally c) full plant implementation.The present paper describes the initial laboratory test work. The development of a two-stage circuit consisting of separate rock and pyrrhotite rejection stages to replace the simultaneous rejection of both rock and pyrrhotite in a single stage is discussed. A two-stage circuit simulation based on batch laboratory flotation data is also presented. Further development work, including the on-site pilot plant test work and the plant implementation of the new circuit design, will be described in a later publication.INTRODUCTIONThe milling operation at Inco’s Clarabelle mill, Copper Cliff, Ontario processes a rich complex sulfide ore from several large production mines around the Sudbury basin (Agar, 199 1). The sulfide mineralization is simple, consisting of chalcopyrite (Cp), pentlandite (Pn) and pyrrhotite (Po). The main gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar and quartz with minor amphibole and talc. Estimates of mineral composition are routinely calculated from Cu, Ni and S assays. In the mineralogical calculations, all gangue minerals are conveniently grouped and treated as rock (Rk)."

"Mount Milligan mine is located in northern British Columbia. The concentrator employs conventional SABC grinding circuit with bulk sulphide flotation processes. Commissioning started in September of 2013 and nameplate production of 60,000 TPD was reached in the fourth quarter of 2015. As is typical with many mill ramp ups, bottlenecks developed as throughput increased. Since then, plant modifications and new control philosophies in the comminution and flotation circuits have been implemented and evaluated. The mine-to-mill collaboration played a key role in reaching target throughput rates by improving blast fragmentation and implementing temporary pre-crushing. Results of the projects as well as ongoing challenges/bottlenecks and solutions will be discussed.IntroductionMount Milligan Mine is a copper-gold producer located approximately 253 km northwest of Prince George in British Columbia. Production commenced in September 2013 and reached nameplate capacity of 60,000 TPD in December 2015. Average head grades for the mine life average 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au.Circuit DesignOriginal process design began with run-of-mine ore from the pit crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher, conveyed to a live ore stockpile and fed to the mill via four variable apron feeders. The concentrator circuit employs SAG mill - Ball mill - Pebble Crusher (SABC) grinding configuration to grind the ore down to a target P80 of ~200µm. It is then fed to two parallel trains of flotation tanks, each consisting of five 200 m3 tank cells with the first two being roughers and last three being scavengers. Concentrate streams from roughers and scavengers are separately reground with a closed circuit Tower mill and two open circuit ISA mills operating in parallel, respectively.Three stages of cleaners upgrade roughers/scavenger products to 25% Cu followed by a cleaner scavenger stage. The final concentrate is then thickened and filtered to approximately 9% moisture and shipped off site (Figure 1)."

Mixed CrB2 and MoS2 powder (Cr:Mo=1:1 atomic %), without any further process, were used as the targets to be sputtered and deposited onto stainless steel and silicon substrates by pulsed DC power supply. The structures and properties of the CrBMoS films were then analyzed by using SEM, XRD, micro-hardness tester. The SEM morphology of the films showed dense, defect free structure, and the preferred orientations of the films were CrB2 (111) and MoS2 (200) according to XRD spectra. The thicknesses of the films were measured and the relationship between the deposition rates and pulsed factors was determined. The films, with the micro-hardness as high as 19GPa and friction coefficient as low as 0.02, could be considered to be the hard solid lubricant films.

"The effect of current reversal on two commercially manufactured electrodes (RuO2-TiO2 and IrO2-Ta2O5 coated Ti) in a chloride bearing electrolyte was evaluated. Accelerated lifetimes were found to decrease with increasing current density and increasing reversal frequency. Ru: Ti coated electrodes exhibited longer lifetimes than Ir: Ta coated electrodes even though they had one-third as much precious metal content. Chloride concentration did not affect lifetime in the range examined. Using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the failure mode of the electrodes was determined to be coating dissolution leading ultimately to passivation by the presumed growth of a highly resistive oxide at the coating/substrate interface.INTRODUCTIONCatalytic titanium anodes (CTAs) were developed in the 1960’s to replace graphite anodes in chlor-alkali cells. CTAs exhibited much better dimensional stability than graphite leading to lower operating potentials by promoting smaller electrode gaps and better operational efficiencies as they had to be replaced less often. CTAs are simply Ti substrates coated with precious metal oxides (such as IrO2 and RuO2) mixed with other components (such as TiO2 and TasO5) (Trasatti, 2000).CTAs are used in many other electrochemical industries, including water disinfection, wastewater treatment, cathodic protection and metal plating. RuO2 based coatings are typically used for chlorine evolution. IrO2 based coatings are for the most part utilized for oxygen evolution (Comninellis & Nerini, 1991; Forti, Olive, & De Andrade, 2001; Kotz, Stucki & Carcer, 1991; Trasatti & Lodi, 1981)"

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. "A set of experimental batch leaching tests studied the effect of pH, time, temperature, and stirring speed on the relative Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe leaching yields of an oxidized copper-cobalt ore sample in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The results were statistically analyzed and modelled using the structural equation modelling method. Models showed that Cu, Co, and Ni leaching yields were strong functions of the leaching time and leaching temperature, whereas the Fe leaching yield depended on the leaching temperature, stirring speed, and pH. Under optimum leaching conditions yields were 99.8% Cu, 82.4% Co, 91.3% Ni, and 30.6% Fe.RÉSUMÉ Une série d’essais expérimentaux de lixiviation en bâchée ont été menés pour étudier l’effet du pH, de la durée d’attaque, de la température et de la vitesse de brassage sur les rendements relatifs de lixiviation du cuivre (Cu), du cobalt (Co), du nickel (Ni) et du fer (Fe) d’un échantillon de minerai de cuivre-cobalt oxydé dans une solution aqueuse d’acide chlorhydrique. Les résultats ont été analysés et modélisés statistiquement à l’aide de la méthode de modélisation par équation structurelle (SEM, de l’anglais structural equation modelling). Les modèles ont montré que les rendements de lixiviation du Cu, du Co et du Ni dépendaient énormément de la durée d’attaque et de la température de la lixiviation ; le rendement de lixiviation du Fe, quant à lui, dépendait de la température de la lixiviation, de la vitesse de brassage et du pH.
