"The paper is part of our study of the frother structure-property relationship using bubble rise velocity. Single bubble rise velocity profiles were determined in a 350 cm column for surfactants from the polypropylene glycol (PPG) family. Using velocity at 300 cm, the concentration to reach minimum velocity (CMV) is determined. The CMV is shown to decrease as alkyl chain length (n, number of carbons) increases and as the number of propylene oxide groups (m) increases. Linear correlations log CMV vs. n and m were observed. Taking literature data for critical coalescence concentration (CCC), linear log CMV vs. log CCC correlations were also noted. Mechanisms are briefly discussed, and prediction of CCC made for a commercial polypropylene glycol.INTRODUCTIONAs one of the great enabling technologies of the 20th century, froth flotation is a highly versatile method for physically separating minerals by exploiting differences in wettability (hydrophobicity). Over the last century, flotation reagents have undergone significant developments (Khoshdast and Sam, 2011). One important group of reagents is frothers which are used to reduce bubble size, slow bubble rise velocity and help stabilize froth (Klimpel and Isherwood, 1991).Frothers, originally derived from natural sources (e.g., pine oil and cresylic acid), are largely replaced today by synthetic products which provide more consistent properties. Polyglycols, based on PEO (polyethylene oxide), PPO (polypropylene oxide), or PBO (polybutylene oxide) groups, were first described by Leja and Nixon (1957) and have attracted wide use since then (Farrokhpay 2011). The chemical structure of polyglycols can be represented by a general formula: R(X)mOH, where R = H, or CnH2n+1 and X stands for EO (-C2H4O-), PO (-C3H6O-), or BO (-C4H8O-). The polypropylene glycol ethers (CnH2n+1(PO)mOH) are the most common of these reagents (Pugh, 2007) and the focus of this study.In general, the chemical structure of frother molecules comprises two parts, a non-polar hydrophobic hydrocarbon (alkyl: CnH2n+1) chain and a polar hydrophilic head. By introducing the ether -Olinkage, which acts as another polar site, the propoxy group (-OC3H6-) in the structure makes the frother readily soluble in water (Somasundaran and Wang, 2006), facilitating the industrial use of these frothers. Available as by-products, Dow Chemicals introduced as series of polyglycols, e.g., Dowfroth (DF) 200, 250, 263, and 1012, the most familiar being DF250 (CH3(PO)4OH), a polypropylene glycol methyl ether. While no longer available from Dow, these and other polyglycols are still widely used."

"The flotation behavior of O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC) and pH for chalcopyrite and galena was studied through pure mineral test, adsorption quantity determination, solution chemistry calculation and Materials Studio simulation. The results show that the recovery differential value of chalcopyrite and galena is about 20% when pH of the pulp 9.5 and IPETC is 7×10-4 mol/L, the flotability differences of the two minerals is significant. There is competitive adsorption between OH? and IPETC on mineral surfaces, it lead to galena flotability is lower than chalcopyrite flotability. IPETC can remove the hydration layer on mineral surface and adsorb on active sites for collector adsorption, minerals have a better hydrophobicity.INTRODUCTIONCopper and lead are two of the most widely used metals in industrial and living, their applications include building construction, various metal alloys, heat and electricity, machine manufacturing (Zhang et al., 2014). Chalcopyrite and galena are the major source of copper and lead, normally they associated with each other. With the growing use of these resources, high grade and dissemination large particle sizes minerals are less and less, the use of low grade and complex dissemination minerals have to be paid more attention (Chen, Ye, & Li, 2010; Liu, Sun, Hu, & Wang, 2009). As the special properties and complex composition of copper-lead sulfide ore, flotation separation of chalcopyrite from galena effective is a research emphasis and difficulty point in mineral processing (Bruckard, Sparrow, & Woodcock, 2011).In the separation process of chalcopyrite and galena, it is rather important to choose effective collector (Huang, Wang, & Liu, 2014). Enlarging and using the two mineral flotability will be a good basis and start in flotation (Reyes-Bozo et al., 2014). Qin et al. (2013) made a great deal of research on flotation separation of copper/lead concentrate, collector O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC), butyl xanthate (BX) and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADTP) were investigated, BX and ADTP floated both chalcopyrite and galena well, specific adsorption appeared in the surface of mineral, the problem was the collectors were not selective enough, however IPETC showed better selective."

"This paper demonstrates the selection of grinding circuit technology for a number of recent projects including discussion of the key drivers and the role of energy efficiency. Decreasing head grades combined with a strong and sustained increase in operating costs has forced miners to examine increased project size, increased equipment capacity and efficiency improvements in order to reduce their unit operating costs and improve overall project economics. Comminution energy consumption, safety and capital cost considerations play a critical role in the success of projects. This paper presents some key guidelines for a successful and cost effective comminution circuit design and includes a case study on three projects, outlining the issues and the drivers which led to the ultimate circuit selection and the critical role that energy efficiency played.INTRODUCTIONComminution circuits for minerals processing are selected based on their suitability and efficiency in reducing run-of-mine ore to the desired feed size for the downstream process. The input material (ore) properties and downstream process requirements are the key determinants and there are standard approaches for each circumstance.The minerals processing industry has been a fast adaptor of efficiency improvements based on increasing capacity of equipment (e.g. trucks, crushers, mills, pumps) but less successful in adapting radically new technologies that disrupt incumbent flowsheets or processes.The installed power of grinding mills has increased linearly over the past 25 years (Meka & Lane, 2010) and pumps and classification equipment have kept pace. The autogenous grinding (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills displaced stage crushing as a dominant method of coarse rock breakage in many applications causing crusher manufactures to increase the capacity of cone crushers to meet the competitive demand.Examples of new comminution technology in the 20th and 21st centuries are the development and adoption of cyclone classification in the 1940s (Newtech, 2016), AG milling in the late 1950s, vertical grinding mills in the 1980s, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) also in the 1980s and ultrafine milling technology in the 1990s (Meka & Lane, 2010)."

"This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations addressing hoist safety, automatic hoisting, and shaft obstruction. The regulations are quite similar among provinces, with only slight differences. Risk-mitigation strategies used in other industries are discussed, including their applicability to mine hoists. The specific case of software safety is introduced through examples. The mitigation of software failure is based on the use of the software lifecycle as recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 standard. Finally, ways to improve hoist safety are proposed.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare entre elles les diverses réglementations provinciales canadiennes concernant la sécurité des machines d'extraction, le levage automatisé et les obstructions dans les puits. Les réglementations sont assez semblables entre les provinces, mais elles comportent de légères différences. Les stratégies d’atténuation des risques utilisées dans d’autres industries sont abordées, incluant la possibilité de les appliquer aux treuils de mines. Le cas spécifique de sûreté des logiciels est abordé par des exemples. L’atténuation de la défaillance des logiciels est basée sur l’utilisation du cycle de vie du logiciel, comme cela est recommandé par la norme 61508 de la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI). Des moyens d’améliorer la sécurité des treuils sont également proposés."

"Today technical electro-refining processes for copper exclusively use sulfuric acid, for silver refining nitric acid electrolytes are used. Sulfuric acid is characterized by very good chemical and electrochemical stability, good conductivity and low cost. The disadvantages of sulfuric acid are the precipitation of fine-grained cathodes with smooth surfaces only by using additives like glue, thiourea and chloride. In case of silver the electrolyte is electrochemical unstable and bears the risk of the formation of toxic NOx when pH is too low. A second disadvantage is the form of electrodeposition of silver as dendrites with their removal from the bottom of the Möbius cells.This paper reports the results concerning the application of an alternative electrolyte in copper and silver electro-refining. At first the electrolyte was characterized by the determination of current density potential curves. Electrolysis experiments were performed in laboratory scale using technical anodes for copper and synthetic anodes for silver. During the copper tests the solubility of contaminations from the anodes and the amount and chemical composition of the anode slimes were determined. Moreover the influence of current density, electrolyte temperature and the effect of several additives on the precipitation and chemical purity of the cathodes were investigated. In all experiments cell voltage as well as anodic and cathodic polarization was measured and current efficiency and specific energy consumption were calculated. A comparison with the results with those of tests using conventional sulfuric acid electrolyte shows the advantages and disadvantages of both systems, additionally the technical application chances and limitations for the new electrolyte. This electrolyte enables the precipitation of smooth copper cathodes with low silver and sulfur concentrations even at lower temperatures without any additive. For silver refining the electrodeposition of compact silver sheets is possible, that can be stripped comparable to those in copper electro-refining."

Indigenous peoples are a unique stakeholder because their growing legal rights to lands and resources can often determine a project’s outcome. A project will only be successful if it is able to obtain the legal permits, withstand any judicial reviews, and gain and maintain the social license to operate. Stakeholder identification, management, and engagement are key risk-mitigation tools required to successfully convert risks into opportunities.RÉSUMÉ La courbe de développement du secteur de l’extraction s’est allongée, elle est devenue plus abrupte et plus hasardeuse en raison de l’accroissement des risques sociaux, légaux et politiques venant des divers intervenants. "Av. Bases de Manresa 61-63, Manresa (08242) Barcelona, SpainTantalum is a strategic metal and an improvement of the mineral processing is an important issue. The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). Many author structures of the High Pressure Grinding Rolls modelling in three main branches; (a) throughput modelling, (b) Power and energy model and (c) particle size distribution modelling (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Austin & Trubelja, 1994; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali, 2009)."

"This paper outlines geotechnical conditions that commonly exist in underground, hardrock mines and the challenges posed for ground-support steel, specifically rockbolts, used in these environments. A model is proposed whereby the in-situ stress and rock-mass classifications (based on Bieniawski’s rock mass rating) form the basis of determining the desired steel properties of the rockbolts used. Based on the ASTM F432 bolting specification, recommended minimum steel properties are defined for three ranges of in-situ stress levels, each with their own six ranges of RMR values. Heat treatment for the steel can be specified once these minimum steel properties are known.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article décrit les conditions géotechniques qui existent fréquemment dans les mines souterraines de roches dures et les défis que cela pose pour le soutien de terrain en acier, plus spécifiquement les boulons d’ancrage utilisés dans ces environnements. Un modèle est proposé dans lequel les contraintes in situ et les classifications de la masse rocheuse (selon la classification de la masse rocheuse de Bieniawski) servent de base pour la détermination des propriétés désirées pour l’acier des boulons d’ancrage utilisés. En se basant sur les spécifications de boulonnage de l’ASTM F432, les propriétés minimales recommandées pour l’acier sont définies pour trois plages de niveaux de contraintes in situ, chacune avec sa propre plage de six valeurs de classification de la masse rocheuse (RMR). Un traitement thermique pour l’acier peut être spécifié une fois que ces propriétés minimales pour l’acier sont connues."

"Excess Gibbs energy is a thermodynamic parameter which quantifies the difference between the value of the Gibbs energy for a real mixture and that for an ideal mixture. More specifically the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of a species (i) in a mixture is indicated by the change in the overall excess Gibbs energy of the solution as the number of moles of species (i) changes while keeping temperature, pressure and the number of moles of all other species in the solution constant. Generally it is obtained from the activity coefficient which in turn can be obtained for a species in a mixture using a variety of models. The most widely used method is to use UNIFAC. Flotation is probably the most important process in the concentration of minerals and requires the use of reagents such as collectors and frothers. There is abundant experimental data which illustrates that collectors of different alkyl chain lengths will change the contact angle and that frothers of different structures and molecular weights will result in changes in key flotation properties such as froth behavior, surface tension and critical coalescence concentration. In this paper it is shown that there is a strong linear relationship between measured parameters such as froth volume/height, surface tension, critical coalescence concentration and contact angle and the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of the molecules used. Proposals are made to explain these correlations.INTRODUCTIONAs is well known froth flotation is arguably the most widely used process in the separation of minerals. In broad terms the process relies on the use of reagents known as collectors to adsorb onto a mineral surface and thus render the mineral particle hydrophobic. Alkyl thiolates are very commonly used for this purpose. The hydrophobicity is induced as a result of the alkyl group’s molecular structural properties which results in it forming a non-ideal mixture with the process water. Surfactants (or frothers) are typically alcohols and are known to lower the surface tension of the system and also inhibit bubble coalescence and reduce bubble size. Since alcohols are polar they will also form a non-ideal mixture with water. The hydrophobic mineral attaches to the bubble and rises to the froth phase where the valuable mineral is recovered as a concentrate. Frothers have often been characterized using the so-called HLB (hydrophobic-lipophilic balance) number but recently it was shown that the use of activity coefficients (?) or excess Gibbs energy (G ex ), which is calculated using equation (1) is a much more appropriate way to describe the behavior of these reagents in non-ideal mixtures with water (Corin and O’Connor, 2014)."

"The paper presents a scale-up and design method of vertical screw stirred mill, in which the closed circuit of mill and hydrocyclone was assumed as one factor, theoretically regardless the affects inside system of the mill and hydrocylone. The specific energy is chosen as a scale-up criterion, based on the premise that when fed the same feed material, mills of different sizes delivering the same specific energy will yield products.Batch grinding tests are conducted to determine the specific energy, and combined with industrial production data, scale-up and design of vertical screw stirred mill for industrial production are accomplished. Having developed this method for the vertical screw stirred mill used in regrinding duty of iron ore in Ma Steel, it has now been successfully applied in other installations.INTRODUCTIONThe Towermill was developed in Japan in the 1950s, by the Tower Mill Kubota Corporation, it was fine and ultra-fine grinding mill of the metallic ores and concentrates. Due to the rapid development of metal mining and useful minerals disseminated fine, fine grinding and ultrafine grinding equipment has also been more wide used in minerals processing industry. Typical fine and ultra-fine grinding mil are the Vertimill and Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) Mill of Metso, Eirich Towemill, Outotec HIGmill, FLSmidth VXPmill, Xstrata Isamill and the vertical screw stirred mill (JM) of CRIMM, etc.JM series of vertical screw stirred mill were invented by Changsha Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the 1980s. Energy saving and consumption reducing have been achieved through the optimization and engineering practice. More than 500 units JM series of vertical screw stirred mill are used in the iron ore, copper ore, copper-molybdenum ore, molybdenum ore, Pb-Zn ore and Au ore."

"Block caving is the preferred underground mining method to profitably extract massive, low-grade orebodies; however, lack of cave access inhibits understanding the rockmass response to mining, which is needed for safer, more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualization (VRSV) is an alternative method for understanding complex cave behaviour, by providing virtual access to the cave. A customized VRSV module was developed at UNSW Australia to investigate rockmass response to undercut developments at a case-study block caving operation. Time/sequence effects are investigated in rockmass response to blasting, which is an important factor in hard-rock mines.RÉSUMÉ La méthode d’extraction souterraine par blocs foudroyés est la méthode préférentielle pour extraire rentablement des gisements massifs à faible teneur. Toutefois, le manque d’accès à la chambre restreint la compréhension de la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’exploitation, ce qui est nécessaire pour obtenir des opérations plus sécuritaires et plus productives. La combinaison de grands ensembles de données de multiples sources avec la visualisation scientifique par réalité virtuelle (VRSV) constitue un autre moyen de comprendre le comportement complexe de la chambre en fournissant un accès virtuel à la chambre. Un module de VRSV sur mesure a été développé à l’Université de Nouvelles-Galles du Sud (UNSW) en Australie afin d’étudier, dans une étude de cas d’une exploitation par blocs foudroyés, la réponse de la masse rocheuse aux développements de galeries de sous-cavage. Les effets de temps/séquence sont étudiés dans la réponse de la masse rocheuse au sautage, ce qui est un facteur important dans les mines de roches dures."

"In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of ferric and ferrous couple on the pyrite surface was studied by application of the chronoamperometry technique in an acidic solution at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The effects of the pyrite origin, ferric and ferrous ions concentration on the electron transfer kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ reaction were probed. Tafel behavior of all the test conditions were developed. The results showed that the ferric-ferrous reaction on pyrite electrodes with different origins have a common mechanism, despite different reaction kinetics. The exchange current densities of the redox reaction have the same magnitude of about 10-5 A·cm-2, which is far lower than the value reported for the gold and platinum electrodes, but larger than that of the chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic transfer coefficients are between 0.4 and 0.5, while the anodic transfer coefficients appear unusual with the lowest value being 0.23. It was also demonstrated that an increase of one order of magnitude of iron concentration has no clear effect on the exchange current density and cathodic transfer coefficients of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox reaction.INTRODUCTIONPyrite, FeS2, is mostly considered as a gangue mineral which frequently coexists with valuable minerals and metals, such as gold, copper and nickel. Its separation from valuable minerals can be a costly process (Chandra & Gerson, 2010). In refractory gold ores, the fine gold particles are locked inside the pyrite structure. Oxidative leaching of pyrite is a hydrometallurgical method to destroy the structure of pyrite and expose the fine gold particles to the cyanide solution in the downstream cyanidation circuit. Pyrite oxidative leaching can be achieved by oxidation of pyrite via oxygen and ferric ion(McKibben & Barnes, 1986). In fact, pyrite oxidation by oxygen and ferric is a significant source of acid mine drainage(AMD), which adversely causes serious environmental problems(V. P. Evangelou, 1995).The pyrite oxidation mechanism is accomplished in three consecutive steps: (i) pyrite is oxidized by oxygen and ferrous ion formation (Eq. 1); (ii) ferrous oxidation by oxygen and ferric ion formation (Eq. 2); (iii) pyrite oxidation by means of ferric ions (Eq. 3). "Constrained groove pressing (CGP), as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) technique, is one of the applicable methods for sheet metal forming capable of producing ultra-fine grained materials (UFGMs). In CGP, processing and die design parameters can significantly affect the deformation response of sheet metal specimen. Having said this, in the present research the effects of die design variables and processing parameters (i.e. shear angle and friction) on the deformation behaviour of an Al-Mg-Si Alloy are studied thoroughly. Finite element analysis (FEA), was used to evaluate the effectiveness of mentioned parameters on the deformation homogeneity, strain distribution and pressing load variations. Also, mechanical properties of the deformed sample in term of micro-hardness was analyzed. It is observed that with increasing the shear angle, effective stress, strain and pressing load are enhanced. Moreover, by increasing the coefficient of friction, pressing load enhances. The color coded micro-hardness measurement showed a good agreement with the strain distribution obtained from FEA (higher hardness for the zones associated with higher shear plastic strain values).INTRODUCTIONWork hardening results in enhanced mechanical properties upon cycles of deformation (Hosford & Caddell, 2007). However, the formability of the processed products are affected by work hardening reducing the possibility of processing in subsequent deformation cycles. Therefore, many industrial processes cannot be performed on sheet metals to produce products with desired mechanical and physical properties (Valiev, Islamgaliev, & Alexandrov, 2000). Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is an effective grain refining technique which can impose large plastic strains through cold working on a metallic specimen (Bisadi, Rastgou, Payganeh, Zeynali, & Ghahremani, 2010). SPD techniques are mainly categorized into three types; sheet, bulk and tube forming. Among SPD sheet forming methods, Constrained Groove Pressing (CGP) (Shin, Park, Kim, & Park, 2002), Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) (Saito, Tsuji, Utsunomiya, Sakai, & Hong, 1998) and Repetitive Corrugation and Straightening (RCS) (Zhu, Lowe, Jiang, & Huang, 2001) possess potential applications in manufacturing industries."

"Red Dog is one of the largest zinc mines in the world both in terms of reserves and annual production. In 2013, Red Dog produced 551,300 mt of contained zinc and 96,700 mt of contained lead. The mine, which is located in Northwest Alaska, is a partnership between Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine and NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the local land owner. The Aqqaluk deposit, which is the current source of ore, has an average grade of 15.8% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 73 g/t Ag with the main minerals being sphalerite, galena, pyrite, barite and quartz. Surveys of the zinc flotation circuit at Red Dog identified that a substantial amount of fully liberated, sub 20 micron sphalerite particles were being lost to final tailings. As a means of improving fine sphalerite recovery, a four month plant trial of magnetic conditioning was conducted in the zinc retreat circuit. Magnetic conditioning technology has already been commissioned in several concentrators around the world to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals, increasing their probability of bubble collision and recovery in a flotation cell. The results of the four month plant trial at Red Dog showed that at a high level of confidence, a 1% increase in zinc recovery or zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade combined was achieved with magnetic conditioning. The resulting economic benefit, which is also at a high level of confidence, is significant to Red Dog and therefore, magnetic conditioning has been permanently incorporated into the Red Dog zinc flotation circuit.IntroductionRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. "The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. "Froth stability has an overriding effect on metallurgical recovery and grade for many ore types. Froth recoveries of less than 10% are common for low stability froths such as those in sparsely mineralized ores or in cells at the back end of flotation circuits. It is well known that, aside from chemical factors such as frothers and electrolytes, the mineral particles themselves have the dominant influence on froth stability. The particle properties of size and hydrophobicity are expected to have the greatest effects on froth stability. The aim of this study was to understand the effects of particle size on froth stability and to quantify these relationships.The study compared a synthetic ore of pyrite and quartz, with carefully controlled size ranges and hydrophobicity, with conventionally milled platinum-bearing UG2 ore and the bulk reverse flotation of hematite ore. A novel bench-scale continuous column flotation cell and continuous mechanical hybrid cell with large relative froth volumes, as well as a three-phase froth stability column were used to characterize the froths.It was found that froth stability could be related to the concentrate particle surface area by a Langmuir-type relationship. This is indicative that the mechanism by which particles stabilize the thin films in froths is similar to the mechanism by which surfactants lower surface tension. Different froth stabilities were found for different ores and this was thought to be the result of different particle sizes and distributions, which resulted in different packing densities in the thin films and Plateau borders. Interestingly, there was a clear relationship between the feed particle size and the froth stability even though froth stability was dependent on the concentrate particle surface area. It seems that the feed particle size is a good predictor of the surface area of particles in the concentrate. Concentrate particle size did not show a clear relationship with froth stability since it was already shown that it is both the size and the amount of the particles in the froth that contribute to the stability.INTRODUCTIONThe stability of the froth in froth flotation is important to the recovery and grade of the valuable mineral. Too stable a froth and the grade is reduced; not stable enough and the recovery may be compromised. Platinum-bearing ores with fragile, poorly mineralised froths are known to have froth recoveries that are routinely less than 10% (Crosbie et al, 2009). There are a number of chemical, physical and operating parameters that can affect froth stability, including reagent dosages, air flow rate, pulp density and particle properties. Arguably, the largest contribution to froth stability is from the particles that stabilise (or destabilise) the thin films in froths. Particle size, hydrophobicity and shape all affect froth stability to some extent."

"The purpose of work was the significant increase of copper recovery from slag at a concentrating plant. Analysis of study of slag phase composition showed the perspective of a slow slag cooling method due to its recrystallization and transition of primary copper minerals to secondary.Copper content in base slag varied between 0.71 and 0.96%. The study of a degree of copper minerals release of the slowly cooled slag in comparison with a yielding slag showed that in a flotation size grade –0.071 mm of yielding slag the weight ratio of released copper minerals grains is 58.95% against 86.73% in samples of slowly cooled slag. The process flotation sheet consists of three main, one control and two cleaner flotation operations with aftergrinding of middling products. A reagent mode was differed from a factory one by decreasing the slurry pH from 11–12 to 8–9. This paper shows research results of the slurry alkalinity impact on technological indexes of beneficiation (flotation).Industrial testing of a resulted batch of slowly cooled slag at “SUMZ” concentrating plant showed the efficiency of such processing: copper recovery to a copper concentrate increased by 15–19%.INTRODUCTIONIntensive development of mining and metallurgy industries within a 250-year period in the Ural region led to forming of approximately 315 man-made mineral formations at the territory of the Sverdlovsk region. The region contain over 32.5 billion tons of barren rocks and out of balance ores, over 1.5 billion tons of tailings, over 115 million tons of slimes, and over 100 million tons of metallurgical slag (Demin et al., 2000). Latters, at average, contain 407 thousand tons of copper, 2519 thousand tons of zinc, 7 tons of gold, and 150 tons of silver (Rudoy et al., 2011). Wastes generated in mining processing and metallurgical sector of economy contain not only thousands tons of copper and zinc, but cause significant damage to the environment where they are located. The reduction of negative impact of anthropogenic wastes on the environment as well as the storage volume reduction of valuable metals from dump slags is possible by improving the efficiency of the melting and further flotation of slags formed during this process."

Most metals and alloys processed undergo a solidification processing step. Increasingly, there is a growing number of solidification processing routes that involve rapid solidification of the alloy. These include strip casting, high pressure die casting, 3D printing, and atomization for the production of powders or spray formed parts. By contrast, there are few experimental techniques developed to study the solidification path of alloys during rapid solidification. Amongst these laser melting and solidification, Electromagnetic Levitation (EML) and Impulse Atomization (IA) are the most prominent. Of relevance is the formulation of the solidification path of an alloy and the resultant identification and quantification of metastable phases and their relationship to processing conditions. This typically involves the understanding of the interplay between undercooling and cooling rate for the various phases that form. This presentation will outline some of the methodologies developed to quantify phase fractions and their solidification path as a function of processing conditions using EML and IA.

"Red Dog is one of the world’s largest zinc producing mines and a significant producer of lead and silver. While some of the operational challenges relate to the mine’s location in a remote part of Alaska, there are also challenges in the mineral separation process. Recent processing upgrades have included the installation of two M5000 IsaMills to improve the zinc regrind circuit and of one Jameson Cell to improve the pre-flotation circuit. Relatively fine grinding is required to achieve efficient mineral separation at Red Dog, but while fine grinding aids in the production of high grade concentrates, it also creates challenges in the efficient recovery of fine minerals. Over half of the lead lost to the lead circuit tailings, as well as almost half of the zinc lost to the final tailings, is in the finer size fractions (<10 µm). The high pulp density experienced in the pre-flotation and lead rougher circuits also causes significant entrainment loss of lead and zinc to the pre-flotation concentrate and of zinc to the lead concentrate. To help improve fine mineral recovery, Red Dog has recently plant tested and installed magnetic conditioning technology in the flotation circuits. The equipment aggregates fine paramagnetic sulphides and selectively increases their flotation recovery. This paper outlines the testing and positive results at Red Dog.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. Red Dog Ore and Mineralogy The Red Dog deposit is a rich sedimentary exhalative (sedex) zinc-lead-silver deposit. The main minerals present in order of abundance are: quartz, sphalerite, pyrite, barite and galena. Production began in 1989 with mining of the Main deposit. Between 1989 and 2012, approximately 55.6 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 20.5% Zn, 5.6% Pb, and 97 g/t Ag was mined from the Main deposit. Subsequent to the development of the Main pit reserve, two additional open pit deposits were discovered: Aqqaluk and Qanaiyaq. The first blast in Aqqaluk occurred on June 4, 2010. As of December 31, 2014, the Aqqaluk deposit reserve is an estimated 45.7 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 15.1% Zn, 3.9% Pb and 71 g/t Ag."

Despite the success of DLVO and extended-DLVO models that have been developed for homogeneous and smooth surfaces, a vast majority of practical surfaces encountered in mineral ore beneficiation are typically rough at various scales; they are also typically heterogeneous. The interactions of gas bubbles with particles having rough and heterogeneous surfaces are much more complex than the commonly used DLVO or extended-DLVO models predict. The effects of surface roughness on flotation and colloidal interactions have been reported many times in the past, although a clear understanding of their origins has been lacking. To explain differences in colloidal interactions for spherical hydrophobic particles, a theoretical analysis of the interaction potential was carried out for a model rough particle interacting with a bubble surface in an electrolyte solution in this study. The attractive hydrophobic interaction potential was added to repulsive retarded van der Waals and repulsive electrical double layer interaction potentials. The rough microscopic particles were modeled as spheres decorated with nano-sized asperities. Parameters that reflect common flotation separation systems were selected for testing this theoretical model and computation of the energy barrier applicable to particle – flat bubble surface interactions. It was found that hydrophobic asperities with the height of only several nanometers can reduce the repulsive interaction energy by an order of magnitude. Theoretical analysis also reveals that surface coverage of microscopic particles by nano-sized asperities is important as well. The findings of this research suggest that manipulating and engineering the particle surface topography could lead to better control over flotation separation.
