The Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled Displacement Pile Committee has historically been one of the most active and engaged DFI committees and has performed or spearheaded a number of research projects via the DFI Committee Project Fund (CPF). The authors have had the privilege of being either past or current committee chairs and have been involved in the performance of most of these projects since the fund's inception. The following is a historical overview of the committee's projects and their outcomes.

Nestled between Meridian Park and Howard University in the heart of Washington, D.C., the historic block between 14th, V and W streets North- west featured several original struc- tures, many of them dating to the 1800s. During its rich history, this square block has been home to a variety of different organizations including automobile showrooms and repair businesses, a parking garage, various industrial warehouses, and, in recent years, the headquarters of the renowned D.C. nonprofit Martha's Table. The revitalization of the buildings in this block also known as the Collection 14 project involved the transformation of aging and historical structures into a new multi-use development. The redevelopment project was distinguished by the retention of period street-facing building facades (to the extent possible) to preserve the character and culture of the historic neighborhood while revitalizing the block with some modern construction elements. The complexity of the project and difficult subsurface conditions required specialized and extensive sheeting, shoring and underpinning work to be performed. Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Brooklyn, NY is the largest of 14 Water Pollution Control Plants in New York City. It services over 1 million people with a current processing capacity of 310 million gallons daily. Upgrades to the plant have been underway since 1998. This paper details the foundation elements installed in three separate contracts during 2009: NC-41F, NC-36G, and NC-47G. The elements are Concrete-Filled Pipe Piles, H-Piles, Steel Sheet Piling, Secant Walls, Drilled Caissons, and High Capacity Micropiles. Soils on the site consist of fill over organic silty clay and silty sand. Beneath the organic layers lie lake sand and varved silt and clay, sitting atop glacial till and rock. Due to Federal Mandates, certain plant capacity and secondary treatment requirements had to be met by specific dates. Failure to meet the requirements would have an adverse affect on the NYC areas being serviced. Further complicating the project, the existing plant operations had to be maintained throughout the entire construction phase. To accommodate the constraints of the project, new specialty equipment and several key redesigns were used to maintain construction schedules

We present in this paper the results of a parametric study carried out in a calibration chamber on instrumented model piles. The aim is to point out group effect on piles within a group through their resulting shaft friction and tip resistance. The methodology relies on the study of the influence of adjacent piles on a "reference" pile. The soil used is a silica sand (Fontainebleau sand). The influence of parameters like pile spacing, number of piles and installation order are evaluated. The results show a positive effect on shaft friction of the group effect and a negative effect on tip resistance. Efficiency factors are defined in order to have a better view on the parameters influencing the response of the pile within a group.

The original Cistercian Lure abbey situated in eastern France and built in the second half of the 16th century, has become nowadays an administrative building. Because it has been founded on poor ground conditions and inadequate foundation scheme, the abbey has suffered severe structural distortion. In 1992 an inspection revealed new extensive damages which led to a general refection together with a foundation underpinning. Micropiling was the selected method. Movements recorded over a period of 6 years after underpinning completion are presented.

Pile load tests are regularly used to verify pile capacities. Sometimes, they are used to optimize pile designs. This paper presents a case study based on a real project, in which the information obtained from load tests during construction was used to shorten the design pile lengths without a formal decision analysis. In this study, a simple probabilistic model was used to assess the probabilities of failure based on design information. The Bayesian approach was used to update the probabilities given the additional information from load tests. These probabilities were then used in a formal decision analysis to determine the optimal pile lengths based on design information and based on the additional information from load tests. The optimal pile lengths are different from those implemented in the project without a formal decision analysis. The value of the formal decision analysis is illustrated by its ability to optimize the pile length in a transparent and defendable way.

This paper presents a restoration operation of the load-bearing capacities of a deep foundation which did not satisfy the original design conditions. The operation was preceded by a series of tests carried out after construction of the pile foundation. In order to verify the efficacy of the method, both load tests on piles before and after intervention and tests on the material used in underpinning the piles were carried out.

The soil-pile interaction under lateral impact loads is not yet completely well known. Many tests on single piles under static lateral loads in centrifuge have been performed and P-y curves have been determined at different levels of the pile in soil. Following these static tests on piles, a large program is undertaken with the same piles submitted to impact loads. The pile equipped with various pile caps has been impacted under variable amplitudes of shock. The behavior of the pile under different impacts was studied and dynamic parameters of the soil-pile system have been determined. Many cases of loading constituting various load histories have been analyzed. They are resulting from parametric centrifuge tests run out, on the one hand with constant and cumulative impacts and on the other hand, variable and cumulative ones. The Influence of each type of loading was studied. Using a finite element method, a non-linear pile-soil system was conceived and a transient dynamic analysis have been performed. The results of the non-linear analysis and experimental data were compared giving a good agreement.

Jet grouting is a ground improvement technique that has become widely adopted over the past three decades, yet relatively little data has been published about performance characteristics of mixes under adverse conditions, such as the inclusion of clay lenses. This paper presents an experimental investigation on the impact of clay on the strength of jet grouting. A total of 150 grout samples were subjected to 0-10% levels of Kaolinite and Bentonite inclusion. While the Bentonite was introduced as a pre-hydrated slurry, the Kaolinite was mixed in two ways: in a pulverized condition and as large chunks. Sample strength and stiffness were measured at multiple dates within the first 28 days. With 10% clay inclusion all samples exhibited significant strength and stiffness losses. With some, substantial losses began with as little as 4% clay. Even a 1% clay inclusion tended to decrease strength and stiffness between one-quarter and one-third of the control sample. Depending upon clay type and inclusion method, results differed significantly with respect to strength and stiffness development and failure mechanism. Petrographic analysis is used to provide further insights as to apparently divergent behaviors.

One popular method to stabilize slopes is the use of deep foundation elements to support lateral loads from an unstable soil or rock mass. Drilled deep foundation elements are often selected due to local availability of equipment, access concerns, cost considerations and post-construction aesthetics. The analysis of Combined Pile Raft Foundation (CPRF) is very complex due to involved interactions among components of CPRF system. Many researchers made efforts to develop sufficient methods including three dimensional finite element methods to compute these interactions. Since there are some restrictions and complexity in previous methods, in present study a new approach based on three dimensional finite difference methods is implemented to overcome some of these restrictions. The total and differential settlements of a centrifuge case study are computed using different numerical methods to show the performance of present numerical approach.

A helical pile with in-situ grouted shaft was used to underpin the existing slab of a large retail store in the Edmonton, Alberta Canada area. The existing structural slab did not have the capacity to support the increased load requirements. The design to upgrade the capacity specified a drilled shaft as the deep foundation to underpin a portion of the slab. A helical pile was quoted as an alternate and ultimately won the bid based on the advantages of the system. After an ASTM D1143 Quick Load Test confirmed the axial compression capacity, 723 helical piles with grouted shafts were installed in 3 weeks underpinning 40% of the 93,000 ft2 (8,660 m2) building.

The paper describes the design development and construction of bored piles at Pindersfield Hospital, Wakefield, U.K. The piles were of monopile type. Monopile is the term used to describe piles which are constructed without pile caps so that the superstructure columns bear directly on the pile top. Pile geotechnical design was developed from the Site Investigation data and testing of two preliminary piles. Final design philosophy is described. Pile structural design was developed from the loadings applied by the superstructure, and the requirements, tolerances and limitations of monopile construction techniques. Construction was closely controlled in order to achieve a ?right first time? result. The conclusion gives a critique of the system and its value.

An interactive short column system is evolved as alternative to deep foundation system in deep layers of marine clay, the interaction of encased stone column and marine clay carry load without causing conventional settlement. This paper presents concept of the system and its field application as foundation of culverts on marine clay layer of 15 to 17 M underlain by residual soil layer of 5 to 6 M, where conventional pile of 23 to 25 M would have been required.
