"This paper presents the main features of the Wolf Creek Dam Foundation Remediation Project, highlighting the innovative construction approach and stressing on how the collaboration between the contractor and the owner became a key element for the success of this project.The main rehabilitation contract, $341 M, was awarded in 2008 for the construction of a 980,000 sqft concrete barrier. Most of this 2ft-wide concrete barrier wall is being built to depths reaching 277 ft using innovative construction techniques proposed by the contractor and under quality control measures that exceed by far the industry standards.The construction of the barrier wall entails the use of nine different foundation techniques which run concurrently following very stringent requirements in terms of verticality, distance between open elements, strength, permeability and dimensions that control the installation sequence of each barrier wall element.The innovative construction approach by the contractor and the collaborative efforts by the contractor and the USACE (“US Army Corps of Engineers”) have brought this unique and very difficult project to a successful completion, setting new standards in the dam foundation industry and nine months ahead of scheduleINTRODUCTIONWolf Creek Dam is on the Cumberland River in south central Kentucky. It provides hydropower, flood control, water supply, and water quality benefits for the Cumberland River system and surrounding region. The lake is a source of recreation that has attracted more visitors (4.89 million) than Yellowstone National Park (2.87 million).The dam and its adjacent reservoir reside upon a heavily Karst bedrock foundation. In late January 2007, the USACE placed the dam under a 'high risk' for failure designation. As a temporary measure, the pool elevation was lowered to 680 ft Above Main Sea Level (“AMSL”), 80 ft below its maximum capacity, with huge impacts to the local economy while the major, and ambitious, $ 594 million remediation program to bring the dam back to its full operating condition was carried out.The main rehabilitation contract of $341 million was awarded in 2008 for the construction of a 980,000 sqft concrete cut-off barrier. "Mica Dam, owned by British Columbia Hydro, is an 820 ft high earthfill embankment dam that was completed in 1973. The dam consists of a thin central impervious till core supported by upstream and downstream compacted sand, gravel and cobble shell zones, founded on bedrock and valley bottom alluvium deposits. In 2012, a project was started to install new piezometric instrumentation within the dam’s foundation and downstream shell zone.Deep drilling in large embankment dams is very difficult and requires careful planning to select a methodology capable of reaching the target locations, while ensuring that no damage is done to the surrounding dam fill zones. At Mica Dam, the drilling could only be carried out from the Dam Crest and drillholes had to be carefully oriented to avoid intersecting any existing dam instrumentation. The drilling work therefore required angled drillholes, at depths of up to 855 ft, through heavily compacted sands, gravels and cobbles, and to significant depths below the standing water table.During the planning stages for the Project, in early 2013, the preferred drilling method was selected and a drilling contractor was engaged for the drilling work. Critical dam safety concerns were identified and addressed during the design stage of the Project with the drilling contractor, so that risk mitigation measures and response plans could be effectively developed.This paper explains how background information and prior drilling experience influenced the final design and implementation of the drilling techniques used in 2013 to successfully drill the deep holes and carry out the piezometer installations in Mica Dam. Drilling procedures, instrumentation design and installation methods, as well as risk mitigation measures, are discussed."

This paper presents two case studies of large diameter driven tubular steel piles for the ongoing Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade (W2B). This project forms part of Australia’s largest regional infrastructure project and will upgrade about 155 kilometers of highway to four-lane, divided road. There are more than 170 bridges on W2B, and driven tubular steel piles are adopted on 43 bridges between Glenugie and Ballina. Driven piles terminating in soil or basalt is a big challenge faced by both designers and piling contractors due to 1) the uncertainty of expected pile unit shaft and base resistance in different soils; 2) whether plugging is formed; and 3) highly variable basalt strength and thickness near top of the rock. If these risks are not adequately managed during design or construction stages, it could lead to unexpected project delay, extra time and cost or pile toe damage in basalt. This paper describes two case studies, one for piles designed to terminate in soils and the other for piles designed to terminate in basalt. How these risks were assessed and managed during detailed design, procurement, hammer selection, pile installation and verification will be discussed in details with lessons learnt summerised in the conclusion.

"Sydney’s booming real estate market has pushed property developers to invest in historically “no-go” areas, which were previously too expensive to develop. These areas are usually near rivers where the sites are underlain by deep alluvial and estuarine sediments. In these ground conditions conventional bored pile techniques are often not competitive. Contiguous Flight Auger (CFA) and Drilled Displacement Piles (DD) techniques are on the other hand suitable for these ground conditions. This paper deals with the design and construction challenges encountered with these piling techniques for a series of high-rise towers in Sydney’s West. The advantages of DD over CFA piles such as reduced overall spoil with substantial cost savings and achievable rock sockets in medium strength bedrock are discussed. Design validation through interpretation of real-time data from the piling rigs’ on-board computer data, and low and high strain pile dynamic testing (PDA) is discussed. The sediment comprises silty to peaty sand, silt and clay. Shell layers are also expected to be present within the soil profile. The Prospect/Parramatta River 1:2500 Acid Sulphate Soil Risk Map shows the site as ‘Disturbed Terrain’ in which soil investigations are required to assess acid sulphate soil potential. Several Cone Penetration Tests and Boreholes were carried out during the geotechnical investigation. All boreholes were extended to bedrock and NMLC-sized diamond core drilling was used to obtain 50mm continuous core of the rock, enabling unconfined compression strength testing to be carried out on selected samples. This paper presents the results of load tests to assess the vertical load carrying capacity of concrete expanded base piles, or pressure injected footings, for various projects located near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The site subsurface conditions and load test methods are described for the Vancouver International Airport site and the test results are reviewed under both compression and tension loading conditions. The pile load tests at Vancouver International Airport are compared to load tests at other sites near Vancouver. The pile load test results are reviewed with respect to available methods of estimating the vertical capacity of this type of piles. The effect of ground improvement by densification on the load test results is considered. The limitations of tension load tests on single piles with respect to uplift resistance of pile groups under seismic conditions are pointed out. Recommendations are proposed regarding pile load test methodology to estimate ultimate vertical load carrying capacity of plies for limit state design.

"The lateral resistance of the structure plays an important role during seismic event and it can be increased by using ground improvement. In this study an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of cement-treated sand on the lateral capacity of the pile. The behavior of piles surrounded by sand only and cement-treated sand confined in a steel box (30 x 30 x 50 cm) which is subjected to lateral cyclic load has been investigated. Piles having a diameter of 2.5 cm and embedded to a depth of 45 cm were used. Steel and aluminum piles were used to investigate the effect of flexural stiffness on the lateral capacity of the pile. Bottom supports of piles were also changed from pinned to fix. Well graded sand compacted to 70% of relative density (RD) was used. Cement-treated sand having a compressive strength of 3.7 MPa was used. Displacement controled lateral load tests were performed and cyclic loads were applied until pile displacement was 4%, 10%, 20%, 35%, 50%, 75% and 100% of pile diameter. Results evaluated are compared with common method of analysis like Brinch hansen (1961), Brom (1964), Poluos (1980) etc. Results have indicated that the stiffness of a pile affects its lateral capacity. The introduction of central cement-treated sand part increased 5 times the lateral capacity of piles as compared with a sand only condition.IntroductionPiles are used extensively around the world to support loads of structures. Piles are commonly used to carry axial load, but in some structures, the lateral capacity of the pile is more important than the axial capacity: for example piles supporting earth retaining structures, electric tower foundation, etc. Structures can be subjected to both axial and lateral forces, like structures constructed at harbor that are subjected to lateral force due to waves action; and structures built in earthquake prone areas like Japan."

"The CDM-LODIC method (cement deep mixing - low displacement and control) method enables ground displacement to be reduced by removing an amount of soil equivalent to that of injected cement slurry and the volume of the plunged mixing tool, which causes a certain degree of ground displacement. Since the CDM-LODIC method was developed in 1985, it has been applied to over 930 sites and the accumulated volume of stabilized soil has now reached 7.6 million cubic meters.In the CDM method, the number of blade rotations per unit depth in the ground when the mixing blades are withdrawn is considered a construction item. The blade rotation number depends on the degree of mixing between the cement slurry and the ground Some field tests were performed based on the degree of mixing between the cement slurry and the ground. In these tests, a new concept of evaluating the blade rotation number when the screw rod penetrates to a given depth without injecting cement slurry has contributed to the degree of mixing. Furthermore, a correlation exists between the coefficient of efficiency of soil removal and the cement slurry admixture rate. In this paper, we discus the data collected in those field tests and present some application examples.OUTLINE OF CDM-LODIC METHODThe injection of cement slurry may cause some ground displacement during Cement Deep Mixing (CDM). In recent years, due to an increased demand for ground improvement work in urban areas, there is increased concern that buildings near any CDM site may be adversely affected. The deep mixing method which reduces displacement due to mixing (CDM-LODIC method) enables ground displacement to be minimized by removing an amount of soil equivalent to the injected cement slurry and the volume of the mixing tool, which itself causes some ground displacement. When the construction site is near other structures, regardless of whether on or under the ground, the CDM-LODIC method can be used in order to minimize any ground displacement. There are considered to be two main causes of ground displacement as shown in Figure 1. Displacement A indicates ground displacement caused by the volume of the inserted mixing tool during the penetration stage and displacement B indicates ground displacement caused by the volume of the injected stabilizing agent. Thus, by removing soil equivalent to the volume of the inserted mixing tool and the injected stabilizing agent, ground displacement can theoretically be minimized. Figure 2 shows the amount of observed ground displacement in the cases of CDM and CDM-LODIC at an actual site. These case studies indicate that ground displacement can be reduced by removing the soil."

"An expansion plan for Washington Dulles International Airport is currently underway to prepare for growth at this northern Virginia facility in the future. While Dulles currently serves more than 20 million passengers a year, when the Master Plan for the Airport is fulfilled, it will be capable of handling approximately 55 million passengers a year. The current Capital Construction Program underway at Dulles will take the Airport one step closer to its full potential.As planned, work includes a new Airport Traffic Control Tower, expansion to existing concourses, a fourth runway, additional parking, and other improvements. One of the most interesting features of this project is the construction of a two-track passenger train system (Automated People Mover, or APM) linking the main terminal and concourses, which will largely replace the Mobile Lounge transportation system, thus greatly reducing surface traffic. Construction of the APM system involves deep excavations along the tunnels and at the transfer stations. This poses special challenges because the settlement-sensitive terminal, original Airport Traffic Control Tower, and concourse buildings, as well as other facilities, exist near the proposed below-ground stations. The site is also underlain by a tight grid of underground utilities that include jet fuel, gas and central communication lines, in addition to more mundane electric, sewer and water mains.One of the most interesting features of this project was the extensive and skillful utilization of micropiles for support of existing structures adjacent to the excavations. Without the use of micropiles, the cost and difficulty of the excavations would likely have been much more. Several important lessons were learned about the use of micropiles, which advance that technology.Throughout the project site, bedrock was generally encountered at 25-ft depths or more. The rock consists of micaceous and highly calcareous siltstone rock. This rock is typical of the sedimentary component of the Culpeper Basin, a Triassic Age geologic feature extending from south central Virginia to western Maryland. The siltstone beds dip gently to the west at about 10 to 20 degrees. Joint planes typically dip 60 degrees to vertical. The rock underlies a sequence of fill materials and residual soils of varying thickness."

"1. INTRODUCTION- WHAT IS P3 OR PPP ?The Public Private Partnership (PPP or 3P) is a project delivery scheme based on the government providing land and/or a concession agreement, and on a private entity providing the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the project for an extensive duration of time (up to thirty years). At the end of the operation-maintenance period, the project is turned over to the public entity, which fully owns the project at all times. While there are many PPP delivery schemes used around the world, for the present paper, we are going to analyze the impact of the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain (DBFOM) scheme on the deep foundation specialty subcontractor. There are couple of reasons that the PPP delivery system started to be used and implemented not only by developed nations (e.g. United Kingdom, USA etc.), but also by the International Development Bank for delivering major infrastructure projects in developing nations. From the point of view of government agencies, some of the reasons to use PPP are the following:??The primary use of private capital in an era where borrowing and/or supplemental taxation represents too much of a political risk. Budget deficits and taxation limits are extremely hot topics in every election (national or local) and the level of education of the electorate in this area is making it more and more difficult for politicians to use borrowed funds and additional taxation finance sources for public projects. At the same time, we see an increase in the social expenditures of the government in parallel with a needed increase in expenditures on infrastructure due to aging and neglect.??Bundling the construction risks with the operational and maintenance risks naturally pushes the private entity to increase the level of innovation and communications in the primary phase ( the construction phase) in order to develop future process based upon the innovation and communications utilized in the operation and maintenance phase of the project. This is true if contractual incentives are properly structured because “all revolves around incentives. In a world of ‘incomplete’ contracts, where it is difficult to foresee and contract about uncertain future events, it is important to get the incentive structure right” (Grimsey and Lewis, 2004).??The transfer of very expensive risks such as differing site conditions, schedule, design, construction, maintenance and operation costs from the public authority to the private entity.??The timespan of development and construction of a PPP project is usually shorter than the traditional procurement process (e.g. “ the I-595 P3 provided capacity improvements fifteen years sooner than a conventional plan would have offered. In Maryland, an innovative expansion of the Seagirt Marine Terminal in the Port of Baltimore was completed two years ahead of schedule due to the P3 model. As a result, the Port of Baltimore is only the second port on the US East Coast to have unrestricted access to both a fully functioning 50-foot channel and 50-foot berth.”)"

"The River Green Residential development, is located in the municipality of Richmond, BC adjacent to the Fraser River. Ground conditions at the site consisted of medium to fine grained alluvial sands and a high groundwater elevation. A temporary low permeability retaining wall was required in order to facilitate the construction of an underground parking structure without inducing settlement of adjacent structures, which include the Richmond Olympic Oval; part of the legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Golder Associates Ltd. and GeoPacific Consultants Ltd. utilized Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) technology to enable construction of a continuous combined low permeability cut-off and retaining wall around the perimeter of the property. The 350m long wall was keyed into marine clay at a depth of 28m below ground surface, and contained H-Pile reinforcement installed at regular intervals. The CSM technology provided many benefits for this project, allowing the combined cut-off and retaining wall to be constructed within a very narrow footprint (650mm width). The low noise impact and near vibration free construction of the CSM equipment provided minimal inconvenience to nearby stakeholders during construction. To reduce dewatering volumes during excavation and prevent significant water-table drawdown the Hydraulic Conductivity requirements for the wall were 1 x 10-7 cm/s or less. Project specifications called for a different strength requirement for upper and lower portions of the wall. The top 13 meters of the wall required an Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of 4MPa to act as a retaining and cut-off wall, whereas the bottom 15 meters of the wall required a UCS of only 0.5 MPa to act only as a cut-off wall. Wet-grab and core samples were obtained from the panels to confirm the UCS and Hydraulic Conductivity specifications were met.INTRODUCTIONGolder Construction Inc. and GeoPacific Consultants Ltd. conducted the design and construction of a deep soil mixed cut-off and retaining wall system. The “dry-box” solution was used to surround the excavation of an underground parkade and prevent flows of groundwater into the excavation."

"Full time inspection of drilled shafts by qualified personnel is a necessary part of construction. Detailed inspection procedures for routine inspection are provided in the Drilled Shaft Inspector’s Manual, published jointly by the DFI and ADSC: the International Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors.The use of NDT methods or other observation methods, such as probes, video camera inspection, remote shaft wall inspection devices or various calipers are not suitable substitutes for routine "topside" construction inspection as described in the Drilled Shaft Inspector’s Manual. However, these NDT and other "remote" or indirect observation methods are valuable alternatives to direct entry of personnel into drilled shaft excavations. They should be considered whenever appropriate to reduce the risks of direct entry of personnel into drilled shaft excavations.As described in the Drilled Shaft Inspector’s Manual, observations made during construction are essential for quality construction of drilled shafts. The shaft depth, diameter, plumbness, bottom conditions, reinforcement, concrete continuity, and bearing conditions are most easily checked during construction. Some of these observation methods include excavation around the shaft for relatively shallow inspection, down-hole inspection for end bearing conditions or rock sockets, and video camera devices for remote inspection. In rare circumstances, a drilled shaft can be extracted for inspection. Before concrete placement, the bottom of the shaft can also be probed by drilling or coring to determine if there are voids or soft zones in the material at the base of the shaft.The Drilled Shaft Inspector’s Manual focuses on traditional "topside" inspection for routine drilled shaft construction."

"The embankment dam at Storfinnforsen is 23 m high and was completed in 1954. The dam has an impervious zone with timber sheet piles and a support fill of glacial till. The pore water pressure in the downstream shoulder has during recent years increased due to deterioration in the sealing function of the timber sheet piling. There is a concern that the high pore water pressure in the glacial till will cause internal erosion initiating at a thin coarse transition layer between the glacial till and the rock fill along the downstream toe. As a remedial action in order to improvement of the leakage resistance a supporting berm of coarse rockfill against the downstream slope of the dam was constructed in year 2013. In addition a new impervious seal in the centre of the dam e.g. a diaphragm wall was considered. However, after further studies and a trial stretch of 40 drains each 20 m long and diameter 0.3 m an alternative with vertical drilled drains in the downstream support was selected. A contract has now started up to drill in a similar way to treat the full length of the dam with drains. The work is in the planning to be completed in 2016.Dam ConstructionStorfinnforsen Embankment Dam was put into operation in 1954. The dam is 330 m long and maximum height is approximately 23 m. The dam is constructed with a central core zone and supporting zones of earth and rockfill on the upstream and downstream sides giving an almost symmetrical cross-section about the dam axis, see Fig. 1. The upstream slope is 2H:1V down to el. 270 and 2.5H:1V below. On the downstream side the slope is 1.75H:1V down to +269 and 2H:1V below. The core zone consists of a timber sheet pile wall with a Zone 5 of glacial till, approximately 2 m wide, adjacent to the wall on the upstream side."

With the increase in population over the last decade, and anticipated population growth over the coming years, Norway is making significant investments in the Country’s infrastructure. Part of this investment in development starts with the Intercity development project in South-East Norway, which is the largest transport project in Norway. The Intercity Development project consists of 270 km (167 mi.) of new doubletrack rail, capable of train speeds reaching 250 km/h (155 mph). The new stations are centrally located in the major cities, in South-East Norway, to provide the benefit to as many citizens as possible. The goal of the project is to reduce the increase in traffic, which is coupled with an increase in population, and reduce the travel times between the cities. The Intercity Development Project has an anticipated completion date of 2034. The Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad (SMS) project, part of the Intercity development, includes 10 km (6.2 mi) of new double-track railway and is situated on the Østfold Line, near the city of Moss, Norway shown in Fig. 1. The 10 km SMS-section covers three open stretches and two tunnels, including 630 m (2,066 ft) substructure for double-track railways on the open line at Sandbukta. The Moss tunnel is a 1720 m (5,643 ft) long tunnel from Sandbukta to Moss center, including a 420 m (1,378 ft) long concrete culvert. The new Moss station includes an 800 m (2,625 ft) long station area. The Carlberg tunnel is a 2350 m (7,710 ft) long tunnel from Kleberget to Carlberg, including a 200 m (656 ft) long concrete culvert.

"Jet grouting is a method of ground improvement that relies on the erosive capacity of high-speed jets to cut and mix the ground in place with a cementitious grout. A continuous return flow of cuttings, called jet grout backflow or spoils, is expelled to the surface during the grouting process. Data from projects completed in Toronto and Ottawa is presented where BOS Solutions’ services provided significant savings compared to the traditional spoils treatment utilizing vacuum trucks for spoils disposal. These traditional treatment methods are cumbersome and expensive by nature. BOS Solutions provided an alternative solution that is environmentally friendly and capable of handling full flow to process these jet grout spoils utilizing a tank system paired with centrifuges and flocculation additives to remove the ground soils and grout product from the spoils slurry. BOS’ process produced a clean water for reuse in the project while reducing the overall waste volume by producing a dry, stackable solid that could be hauled to a landfill. Benefits observed by using the BOS process were disposal waste volumes decreased over 30% and at least a 19% reduction on disposal costs.SCOPE OF WORKJet grouting is a method of ground improvement that relies on the erosive capacity of high-speed jets to cut and mix the ground in place with a cementitious grout. A continuous return flow of cuttings, called jet grout backflow or spoils, is expelled to the surface during the grouting process. The backflow, or spoils, is a mixture of grout, water and soils. Traditionally, the spoil would be collected in in-ground pits and allowed to solidify for a few days prior to hauling to a final disposal site. For the projects completed in Toronto and Ottawa, the jet grouting work was performed at street level, in high traffic congested areas, presenting the challenge of insufficient space for the contractors to process the jet grout spoils in the traditional way. At first, attempts were made of using vacuum trucks to collect and haul the wet spoils to an off-site location where the spoils would be allowed to solidify. However, this method proved cumbersome and expensive due to the high volumes of spoils generated daily and the high number of vacuum trucks required to support the jet grouting operations, respectively."

"After Hurricane Sandy, the stability of an earth slope in the Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey in the United States was deteriorating due to slumping soils and erosion from flooding. A slope stability evaluation indicated the slope did not satisfy the requirements of the local building code. A triple-tier, pile-supported and mechanically stabilized earth wall was designed and constructed to stabilize the slope. The construction was planned from a 3-m-wide roadway and, because of rough terrain and limited work space at the site, a cast-in-place drilled-pile construction was deemed impractical due to slow pile production. An alternative procedure was utilized by pre-drilling holes, and installing precast tip-and-shaft-grouted (PCTSG) piles, which extended to competent soils to improve slope stability. A grade beam, connecting the PCTSG piles along with soldier beams and concrete lagging were used to form the lowest tier of the slope stabilization, while the middle and higher tiers were built as mechanically stabilized earth. The stability of the proposed stabilization was analyzed using 2-D non-linear finite elements. After construction, monitoring of the wall continued for about 8 months to check its performance, and indicated lateral and vertical wall movements were less than 25 mm and 6 mm, respectively, indicating effective slope stabilization.INTRODUCTIONStabilizing earth slopes using piles to connect near-surface unstable soils to underlying stable ground masses has been investigated by many researchers, who presented various approaches to evaluate the contribution of the pile system towards improving the stability of the slope. Some of these approaches consider the piles as structural elements receiving forces from the upper sliding ground mass and transmitting these forces to the underlying stable one. The force from the top sliding mass is applied at between one third and one half of the pile embedment into the top sliding mass, Anagnostopoulos et al. (1990), Fukuoka (1977) and Matsui et al. (1988). The point of application of the sliding force was explored based on successful case histories while addressing the safety factors for both geotechnical and structural design, Vessely A. et al. (2007). The development of numerical analysis techniques utilizing the method of finite elements (FE) also enabled better analysis and design of slopes stabilized using piles. A FE-based approach was successfully utilized to design slope stabilization with target safety factor based on the shear and bending demands and the spacing of the piles, Pradel D. et al. (2010).After Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, the stability of many properties constructed atop earth slopes located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean has become a concern due to storm-induced erosion. This paper presents the analysis, design and construction of a hybrid slope stabilization system utilized at one of these storm-impacted properties, which is located in the Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey in the United States. The subject property consisted of a two-story residential dwelling and a parking structure, and was built on top of an about 8-m-high earth slope having crest at about elevation 10 m (el 10) and toe at about el 2."
