Future challenges to the mining industry are many and include increasing requirements from regulatory agencies and communities, more competitive commodity pricing, increasing competition for power and water supplies, deeper mines and increasing number sulfide ore bodies requiring dealing with Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) controls and finally larger mine waste structures increasing consequences of potential failures. In this sense, the paper deals with approaches that can, and have been, used in planning the overall project and tailings facilities locations and layouts. It also discusses approaches used to achieve better planning, by considering an integrated milling, concentration, and tailings process, rather than considering tailings and the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) as an independent entity.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful analytical and data display tools for mining industry management, capable of linking spatial features with tabular data and integrating communications across departmental boundaries. In this sense, the paper point out the GIS application concentrates in four technical areas of underground mining: ownership and mineral claims; exploration management; production; and mine safety. GIS provides land and exploration managers with the ability to consolidate and archive claim data and to georeference property maps defined in local coordinates into world coordinate systems. GIS’s proximity analysis identifies areas of potential safety concern and points to and maps the shortest routes to emergency exits, facilitating the prompt evacuation of mine personnel.

This paper point put if the companies will considerate large- scale mining in South Américan in the future. In this sense, the philosophy of an international mining company means that the company and the country working in the partnership and they can convince the outside world of the creditworthiness of the project. The mining company would be considering the account metal requirement in the future, the code of behaviour, the obligations and the rights among the employees, the shareholders, the customers, and to the State in wich its work. However, is not specially tailored philosophy for South America. The most important is the satisfactory agreement can be reached even with governments whose domestic laws preclude equity participation by the mining company.

The paper point out the deposits about the carbonate-hosted San Gregorio Colquijirca, as products of an epithermal high sulfidation system. Field, geochemical, and geochronological evidences suggest that the different ore types of the Colquijirca District are caused by a pulsed high sulfidation system subsequent to the emplacement of a diatreme volcanic complex. The first stage formed disseminated Au±Ag mineralization in areas affected by vuggy quartz alteration at Marcapunta. During a second stage, base metal mineralization replaced Eocene carbonate sediments from the Marcapunta diatreme to 2.5 km more to the north. San Gregorio and Colquijirca are to our knowledge the first "carbonate-hosted epithermal Zn-Pb high sulfidation deposit" recognized as such. The correct recognition of this ore type opens new exploration possibilities for base metal in high sulfidation systems affecting carbonate rocks.

The paper point out the Antamina's social policies with Huascarán National Park. The project had required the mine engage with the communities most affected by the mine development, its operation, and closure. In this sense, operating within this social context has required Antamina to first be effective in understanding who the affected people are –at the local, regional, national and international levels. This understanding is also a process that requires time. Through the HWG, the company has achieved engagement, as well as an understanding an appreciation of viewpoints and perspective that has resulted in the protection of HNP, as well as the timely development of the project, with support of stakeholders. Therefore, the experience of the HWG was become for other natural resource projects in complex settings, involving national and international stakeholders and protected or sensitive areas.

The escalation in micro-computer power during the past ten years has been instrumental in the realization of operations research and other mine planning tools as a practical mine design tool. Present day utilization of computer techniques varies across a wide spectrum of activities: from operations research to aid mine management through payroll processing to mine design, monitoring and control. With the advances in computers, increasing automation and robotization in mining, operations research techniques are being used in modeling and evaluation. The trend discernable in mine planning is increasing use of operations research models. In the next ten to fifteen years, nanotechnology will enter in our lives in a big way. There are several methods being pursued for information processing at the nanoscale. The mineral industry management in the 21st century will be faced with several new challenges and opportunities from these advances in the mineral industry applications, data and information acquisition and transmission technology

In mining today, planning is of paramount importance, even more so when one considers that the business margins are reducing, requiring the evaluation of diverse alternatives for the optimal use of scarce resources. Additionally the capital required to approve some projects demands the best planning possible. Modern planning requires that all of the aspects of the business be represented, and not just the planning of the extraction in an isolated form. In order to carry out integrated strategic planning in the mining business one needs to have implemented a culture within the organisation that allows the business to be understood as a interelated system of processes. These processes must be co-ordinated so that they interact properly between each other and so define an integrated plan that optimises the available resources and maximises the benefit to the company. This defined culture should consider the important variables of each activity within the processes, and its’ relevance to the strategic plan. In this sense, this paper shows an example of computer tools used in order to reach the described objectives.

El presente trabajo señala la innovación de procesos en la explotación minera de Cerro Verde a partir de 1971. El proceso se inició con la aplicación industrial de la técnica de extracción por solventes para la purificación de soluciones de lixiviación desarrollada por la compañía Ranchers en la mina Bluebird (Arizona) y que fue seguida por operaciones a gran escala en Bagdad (Arizona) y Chingola (Zambia). La mina Bluebird, que practicaba la lixiviación de óxidos en botaderos seguida de los procesos de extracción por solventes (SX) y electrodeposición (EW), fue la primera en demostrar que la innovadora operación “mine for leach” era una alternativa económicamente viable. En ese sentido, el desarrollo de Cerro Verde se dio en dos etapas: el primero, comprendía el minado y la lixiviación de los procesos de SX/EW y la segunda etapa, el tratamiento de los sulfuros secundarios de alta ley y primarios. De forma que se mejoró la cinética de la extracción de cobre, el manejo futuro del Pad 4 tanto para mantener y asegurar su estabilidad como para reducir los problemas de permeabilidad e inventarios de cobre que un pad permanente involucra, así como para manejar apropiadamente las variables metalúrgicas que la lixiviación de los sulfuros requiere.

El yacimiento de La Zanja ubicada en el caserío La Zanja, Santa Cruz de Succhabamba, Cajamarca, inició sus actividades de exploración en 1991 y las de producción en el 2010. MLZ construyó el embalse o reservorio llamado Bramadero, que acumula las aguas de escorrentía de la quebrada del mismo nombre durante el periodo de lluvias, las cuales son empleadas para el consumo humano en la unidad minera, y en menor escala durante la época de estiaje para los procesos de operación. En este sentido, el presente texto señala la construcción de la presa Bramadero, la cual genera agua para beneficio de las poblaciones ubicadas aguas abajo de las instalaciones. Asi también cuenta con un programa de monitoreo ambiental para vigilar la calidad y la cantidad de aguas superficiales y subterráneas. Por tal motivo, cuenta con estaciones hidrométricas para evaluar en tiempo real la calidad del agua en los cuerpos receptores del área de influencia de la unidad minera.

The Lepanto and Victoria epithermal deposits contain in excess of 8 Moz Au, associated with massive enargite-cemented breccia and quartz-carbonate-base metal veins, respectively. The two deposits are separated by 500 m, but the latter was not discovered until the former was nearly mined out. The sulfid assemblages of these adjacent deposits are characterized by high- and intermediate-sulfidation states, respectively. However, gold was introduced after enargite at Lepanto, associated with an assemblage that is similar to that of the Victoria ore. An even larger gold resource is present in similar to that of the Victoria ore. An even larger gold resource is present in the Far Southeast porphyry Cu-Au deposit, the top of which lies 200-400 m beneath and adjacent to these two epithermal deposits.

The paper is founded on the results of an investigation on the softening behavior of a cold-rolled low carbon steel. This specimen, originally cold rolled 15 , 30 , 50 and 75% reduction in thickness, were annealed at several temperatures ranging from 481 to 687ªC. A temperature-time range was encountered over which strong competition between these processes was evident. An interpretation on the effect of test variable on determining which one of the competing processes dominated during annealing is presented.

The Rincon del Tigre (RdT) complex is one of South America’s largest and best-developed mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions. It is set in the SE Bolivian lowlands, about 50 km from the Brazilian border.The BGS (British Geological Survey) and GEOBOL (Servicio Geologico de Bolivia) carried out an initial investigation of the RdT complex from 1976 to 1986. La perforación y la voladura son mecanismos que suministran material adecuadamente roto al equipo de carguío. La efectividad de ambos depende de la evaluación de la perforadora y de los explosivos a utilizar. El presente texto evalúa la mejor opción técnico-económico para el transporte de concreto lanzado (shotcrete) a interior mina. Para ello, se evalúan tres alternativas logísticas excluyentes: el primero, consiste en instalar una planta de concreto en superficie y realizar el traslado a interior mina mediante mixers. El segundo, consiste en establecer una planta de concreto en interior mina del centro de gravedad de las operaciones, y el tercero instala una planta en superficie y se envía el concreto a la mina por medio de tuberías. En la evaluación de las dos primeras alternativas, se tiene los resultados de la mina San Cristóbal y Cerro de Pasco, pertenecientes a la empresa Volcán, mientras que para la tercera alternativa, se tiene la data de la mina Diamond Cullinam en Sudáfrica.

Minería sin residuos o Wasteless Mining (WLM) es una innovación tecnológica global que apunta a eliminar los riesgos ambientales generados por escombreras y relaves, por medio de una combinación de los procesos de explotación subterránea por hundimiento y de espesamiento de relaves hasta convertirlo en pasta. La condición ideal ocurre cuando ya existe una explotación a tajo abierto y se migra a explotación subterránea por hundimiento, en cuyo caso el déficit de volumen para alojar el relave en pasta lo suple el antiguo tajo. La cavidad resultante del minado por hundimiento puede contener algo más de 2/3 del residuo generado; el otro tercio se coloca en el tajo pre-existente, en obras subterráneas abandonadas, en un depósito sobre zonas de subsidencia delimitada por pretiles o en una relavera menor. Durante la explotación de mina por hundimiento, hasta extraer 1/3 de las reservas no hay cráter de subsidencia. Entre las principales ventajas de la WLM, el artículo cita: mínimo uso de suelo y quebradas para depositar residuos, bajo riesgo de filtraciones y/o producción de aguas ácidas, bajo consumo de agua, ausencia de vibraciones o polvo por voladura.
