"The Blue Nodules project started February 2016 as part of the EU Horizon 2020 subsidy program. Blue Nodules aims at developing a sustainable deep sea mining system for the harvesting of polymetallic nodules from the sea floor. Blue Nodules is closely related to the Blue Mining and Midas projects, both EU subsidized projects. Blue Mining mainly concerned the development of technical capabilities to adequately and cost-effectively discover, assess and transport deep sea mineral deposits up to 6,000 m water depths. The MIDAS project - Managing Impacts of DeepseA reSource exploitation - was a multidisciplinary research programme investigating the environmental impacts of extracting mineral and energy resources from the deep-sea environment.The Blue Nodules project is divided in seven work packages defined to develop mining equipment and process equipment, to assess and integrate environmental, economic and technological aspects and to assess and minimize the environmental impact of mining polymetallic nodules.This abstract will address part of the work performed in the second work package called: ‘Subsea harvesting equipment and control technology’. The main topic addressed will be the development of a propulsion system to manoeuvre the harvesting system. The propulsion system will be developed with full incorporation of economical and compliance requirements and to have a minimal environmental impact.SummaryBased on information gathered in the 70’s during the first studies into polymetallic nodules mining and more recent data and developments, an initial full scale design of the propulsion system is developed. The largest challenge for the propulsion of a deep sea mining vehicle is to drive on the soft sediments associated with these deep sea environments. A short summary of the initial design criteria is given below."

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Near-seafloor high-resolution mapping and photographic transects, associated with finer-spaced box-core sampling could constitute a next step to better constrain the mineable areas and to get a higher level of confidence in the resource estimation.

Analysis of the relationship between environmental parameters and the content of Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Fe and Zn in ferromanganese crusts permits improved identification of locations to prospect for crusts with commercially valuable concentrations of these metals. In this study we asked whether a statistically significant relationship exists between primary productivity of the overlying surface waters, the concentration of O2 in and depth of the O2 minimum layer on the metal content of non-hydrothermal ferromanganese crusts in the Pacific Ocean between 130o W and 175o E and 0o to 30o S (the study area). To further develop the interpretation of the results of the statistical analysis and to assess in detail the geographical expression of these parameters in terms of metal content in crusts, a geostatistical technique (kriging) was used to generate contoured values for metal content, primary productivity and O2 concentration in and depth of the O2 minimum layer in the study area.

Hydrothermal circulation that produces sulfide deposits in the marine environment can also produce sulfide deposits in lakes. The major differences in terms of process are (1) in lakes the hydrothermal fluid is meteoric water of low salinity whereas in the marine setting it is saline and (2) the rocks that are leached of metals to produce the deposits are continental crust in one case and oceanic crust in the other. We have examined sulfides that are presently forming in two lakes ? Lake Tanganyika in east Africa and Lake Oyunuma in Hokkaido, Japan. Tanganyika is the second largest lake in the world and the second deepest rift lake, after Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. Two hydrothermal fields are known in its northern basin at Pemba and Cape Banza (Tiercelin et al., 1993). At Pemba, CO2 and CH4-rich, low temperature (53-88°C) hydrothermal fluids are forming decimeter-tall chimneys at 2-46 m water depth. Our microscopic and x-ray diffraction study of samples from the Pemba site reveal marcasite and pyrite to be the most common sulfides. Minor minerals include barite, hematite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Quartz and feldspar are also identified and were probably incorporated from the surrounding lake sediments. At Cape Banza, aragonite chimneys, up to 70 cm high, are venting fluids at 66-103°C.

For a period of twenty years - from 1985 to 2005 - the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) have jointly conducted surveys of deep-sea mineral resources in the EEZs of SOPAC’s twelve member countries. The overall Programme has obtained excellent results and has identified numerous sites with potential marine mineral resources of manganese nodules, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and polymetalic massive sulphides. The survey cruises have identified numerous sites with potential marine mineral resources such as: manganese nodules in the Cook Islands; cobaltrich manganese crusts in the Marshall Islands, FSM, and Kiribati; and polymetalic massive sulphides in Fiji. Based on collected samples and acoustic data, inferred resources for manganese nodule, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and polymetalic massive sulphides, have all been estimated to be about- 200 million tons in the central Cook waters- 200 million tons in the three seamount selected Marshall waters- and 500 thousands tons around the triple junction of the North Fiji Basin.

The Urals massive sulfide deposits are concentrated in Silurian -Devonian fold belt extending for 1500 km with length from 50 to 150 km. By paleodynamic reconstmction it is established that they were formed in submarine parts of island arcs, in inter arc and back arc basins, marginal seas. When "black smokers" were found in rift zones of present oceans, problem searching their analogues in the Urals Paleozoic complexes was arisen. For solving this problem and demonstration of seafloor origin of massive sulfide many quarries and drill cores were carefully sketched and studied. Particular attention was given to correlation between ores and synchronous sedimentary rocks and fossils. Various laboratory methods were used for comparing sulfides from ore hills with ore-clastic sulfides.

Recent advances in coring technology and in the development of shipboard and/or in situ geochemical geochemical analysis systems have greatly improved our ability to collect and analyze exploration samples, particularly for marine placer exploration programs. The potential benefit of these improvements cannot be fully realized, however, until we also develop more efficient methods of data reduction and interpretation. Specifically, there is a need to provide prospectors with rapid and useful interpretations of the raw geochemical data so that they can exploit promising results and otherwise optimize the exploration program while the exploration vessel is still at sea. The goal of this project has been to identify and/or develop computer software which is capable of making the necessary data reduction calculations and which can be run on conventional desk-top computers. All work on this project has been supported through a research grant from MMTC-CSD to The University of Michigan. The first stage of this effort involved an evaluation of commercially available (i.e., "off the shelf") software to determine its suitability for use in marine placer exploration applications. Various commercial software packages, each purportedly capable of making different types of statistical and/or mathematical calculations, were tested by evaluating their performance in handling geochemical data sets representative of actual marine placer locations. These data sets include the positions and results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected marine placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Gold and silver are important byproducts of mining volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Both metals occur in VMS deposits ranging in age from the Archean to the currently forming massive sulfides found on the ocean floor. The gold- and silver-rich deposits on the modern seafloor are geographically diverse and occur in several different tectonic settings (Figure 1a,b) including seamounts (e.g. Franklin Seamount, Papua New Guinea), unsedimented mid ocean ridges (e.g. TAG and Snakepit, Mid Atlantic Ridge), sedimented mid ocean ridges (e.g. Escanaba Trough) and back-arc basins (e.g. Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea). Interestingly, the most gold- and silver-rich deposits are found in the back-arc basins of the western Pacific, commonly associated with differentiated volcanic rocks such as the dacite-rhyodacite suite at PACMANUS in the eastern Manus Basin. This suggests that different, or more efficient, mechanisms are concentrating precious metals in such back-arc settings. Such mechanisms may include leaching of volcanics enriched in gold (e.g. rifted arc crust) or silver (e.g. continental crust) and/or the introduction of gold into a hydrothermal system by a magmatic fluid. The gold content of modern seafloor precipitates varies from a few ppb up to a high of 54 ppm reported from eastern Manus Basin (1). The Jade Deposit in the Okinawa Trough has the highest silver contents with values up to 1.1% (2). Both gold and silver are preferentially concentrated in late-stage, low temperature precipitates with zinc-rich assemblages being favoured in most cases. Gold is found as relatively pure native gold and sub-microscopic inclusions in gold-rich deposits, but occurs predominantly as sub-microscopic inclusions and possibly as solid solution in the gold-poor deposits (3). Silver occurs as rare silver minerals such as acanthite and native silver in the silver rich Jade deposit (2), but more commonly in the silver-containing minerals tetrahedrite and tennantite, as is the case in the PACMANUS deposit. Tetrahedrite is also known to be an important host of silver in ancient VMS deposits (4). More abundant sulfides can contribute significantly to the silver balance. In the silver-poor deposits at 21 N East Pacific Rise, silver is contained entirely within chalcopyrite, isocubanite, pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite/wurtzite and galena. In this case silver may be present as sub-microscopic inclusions of silver minerals or in solid solution.

In its first three years of operations, the in-house programs of the continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC/CSD) have focused on the development of drill systems - technology and the improvement of techniques and applications of reconnaissance methods to marine mineral deposit characterization. Many of the technological advances made to date have been in direct response to specific requests from industry for drill systems needs, and from federal and state agencies seeking technical support for various research efforts. These cooperative programs have proven to be an extremely efficient and effective way for the MMTC to achieve some of the main program goals that were established for the organization at the outset: primarily, to encourage and assist U.S. industry in marine minerals research activities and to encourage cooperative work among research institutions, government agencies, and industry. Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). Two principal types of the hydrothermal fields in Atlantic - axial and off-axis - could be established based on their structural setting in the rift zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) (Figure1). The first (axial) type is represented by five high- and three low-temperature hydrothermal sites (Table 1). All of these fields are connected with young axial effusive volcanism and related to large linear volcanic ridges or central volcanoes at the inner floor of the rift valley. The hydrothermal activity here is controlled by the intersection between longitudinal magma feeding faults and transverse weakened zones characterized by high permeability. [ ] The hydrothermal sites of the second (off-axis) type (such as Rainbow, TAG, 24°30?N, Logatchev, newly discovered 13°N (Figure 2) and possibly 16°48?N sites) are related to large tectonic dislocations forming marginal scarps of the rift valley as well as transverse discontinuities.

One hundred ninety nine beach face sand samples from an equal number of beaches from the Mexican Pacific were studied. Based on petrological and chemical analysis some locations have been studied in more detail. Black sands from the following areas are discussed: (1) west Baja California Peninsula, where black sands rich in magnetite and ilmenite have maximum values of 50% iron and 14% titanium in the very fine sand fraction; (2) east Gulf of California, in its northern portion, the black sands show maximum values of 43% iron and 5% titanium in the fraction 2 to 4 0;-(3) the south Mexican Pacific, characterized mainly by medium sands, moderately well sorted, show that the fine sand fractions reach values of 35% iron and 41% titanium. X-ray fluorescence applied on selected samples constituted by feldsarenites and lithic feldsarenties, showed the presence of rare elements in some of the studied samples.

A thorough appreciation of the origin, formation, preservation and geometry of marine sand and gravel deposits is central in demonstrating that their extraction by dredging does not affect coastal processes or marine life. Geological evaluation underpins wave, tidal and sediment transport modeling and assists in predicting the nature and extent of seabed change during and after dredging. Marine sand and gravel deposits in the English Channel, southern North Sea and parts of the Irish Sea are of predominantly periglacial fluvial origin and record long histories of valley and floodplain cut and fill associated with Quaternary climatic and sea level oscillations. In the Bristol Channel, the influence of marine transgression and tidal dominance in sorting proglacial outwash deposits is evident in the distribution of sandbanks, scoured channels and gravel lags of this region. These deposits are relict and are unrelated to coastal sediment dynamics. Their extraction leaves seabed depressions which monitoring shows remain unfilled. The resultant offshore bathymetric changes and sediment removal in over 10 m water depth are not transmitted to the coastal zone as beach drawdown, wave height increases or sediment starvation. Applications for new aggregate dredging permissions in UK waters must be accompanied by an EIA and need to make a convincing case that the dredging will not affect rare or declining species and communities of marine life. Seabed recovery rates post dredging are now investigated and understood with reference to geological setting and the uniqueness of the sediment/biological character (biotope). Investigation of the continental shelf by the Industry and others reveals the large extent of gravel-dominated biotopes relative to commercially viable deposits.

Stephen D. Scott Steven Scott is a Professor of Geology, Director of the Marine Geology Research Laboratory and, until May 1997, was Chairman for 9 years of Geological and Mining Engineering, all at the University of Toronto. Steve also holds a cross appointment at the University of Western Brittany's European University Institute of the Sea in Brest, France. He was educated at the University of Western Ontario (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and at Penn State (Ph.D.). Steve is a geologist/oceanographer specializing in base and precious metal massive sulfide deposits which he and his students have studied on five continents and on the bottom of three oceans. He was the first ore deposits geologist and first Canadian to witness "black smokers" on the ocean floor. Since 1982, he has participated on 21 oceanographic surface and submersible expeditions, many of them as Chief Scientist. His research team is currently carrying out projects in the W and NE Pacific Ocean. Steve has published more than 150 research papers and lectured in more than a dozen counties. Popularized accounts of his work have appeared in various media.. He has been honored by several awards and distinguished lectureships. Steve is President of the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility, which operates the Canadian ROPOS robotic submersible, and is President of the International Marine Minerals Society.

The paper describes recent advances in the technology for mapping of the seabed with acoustic instrumentation. These instruments are typically single beam echo sounders, multibeam echo sounders and high resolution sub bottom profiler. For the single beam echo sounders, new features for deep water mapping are described, as well as the possibility for combining investigation of shallow areas with side scan sonar and vertical echo sounding in the same instrument. Multibeam echo sounding technology for deep and shallow water is reviewed, and some new high resolution instruments using dynamic beam focusing is presented. The sediment profiling technology deals with a novel design for high resolution sub bottom profiling, based upon a Mills Cross transducer with resolution as good as 3 degree in its largest configuration and a frequency range of 2,5 ? 7 kHz. Remarkable features of the system are a very high ping rate even for deep water, and the capability to map buried objects or structures by several simultaneous beams. Some results obtained with the first installation on the French research vessel ?Beatemps Beaupré? are presented.

The GeoERA Co-Fund action is a joint contribution of 48 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 33 European countries “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe (GeoERA)”. This is an ERA-NET action under Horizon 2020. The aim of GeoERA is to fund transnational projects contributing to the best use and management of the subsurface, addressing the following four themes: Geo Energy, Ground Water, Raw Materials and Information Platform. The European Commission recognises the significance of raw materials through its Raw Materials Initiative (RMI), the European Innovation Platform on Raw Materials (EIP-RM) and Horizon 2020 funding, specifically through Societal Challenge 5 – Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials. The GeoERA Raw Materials Theme will contribute to research and innovative developments for minerals inventory, minerals yearbook, exploration, mapping, modelling, metallogeny and critical raw materials in the pan-European framework including the sea. A major element in Europe’s long term economic strategy is to ensure security of supply for strategic and critical metals as part of the Blue Growth Strategy developing sectors that have a high potential for sustainable jobs and growth as seabed mining. The project MINDeSEA results of the collaboration between eight GeoERA Partners and four Non-funded Organizations at various points of common interest for exploration and investigation on seafloor mineral deposits. The Geological Surveys of Spain, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Ukraine are organisations with responsibility for coastal, marine geological investigation and mineral resources studies and mapping in their respective countries. The Non-funded participants: the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera; the United States Geological Survey; the All-Russia Scientific Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ocean; and the Geosciences Institute, host important databases, they have an international reputation for excellence in both science and technology, and are internationally-known experts on seafloor mineralisation and hydrothermal systems. This project addresses an integrative metallogenetic study of principal types of seabed mineral resources (hydrothermal sulfides, ferromanganese crusts, phosphorites, marine placers and polymetallic nodules) in the European Seas. The work program includes all the regional seas around Europe comprising the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea (Fig. 1). The MINDeSEA working group has both knowledge of and expertise in such types of mineralisation, providing exploration results, sample repositories and databases to produce innovative contributions. Modern Kuroko-type deposits occur in submarine calderas of island-arc fronts and back-arc rifts in Japan. They occur primarily on or adjacent to caldera boundary faults. Hydrothermal sulfides in the Myojinsho submarine caldera are one of Kuroko-type deposits, but their occurrence is different from other deposits found within the area 200 km2 around the Quaternary volcanic front of Izu-Ogasawara arc.

2013 has seen good progress for Nautilus Minerals and our projects due to the determination of our people and the continued support from shareholders and stakeholders. Our focus remains Solwara 1 in Papua New Guinea for which the build continues on the seafloor production tools, subsea slurry pump and riser and lifting system.
