Manganese nodules from the Cook Islands (CI) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are compositionally different from other nodule fields. CI nodules have relatively high cobalt concentrations and low nickel, copper, and manganese concentrations (e.g. Hein and Petersen, 2013). This reflects the predominantly hydrogenetic (seawater source) origin for metals in the CI nodules versus dual seawater-pore water sources for most other nodules. The concentrations of many critical and strategic metals have not been previously analyzed for CI nodules, so comparisons with other nodule fields have been limited. To address this, we analyzed a set of nodules distributed throughout the CI EEZ for a complete set of 67 elements, including all of the metals that may be of economic interest, such as the rare earth elements (REEs), yttrium, tellurium, niobium, zirconium, tungsten, titanium, and others (see selected elements in Table 1). In addition, we recalculated the tonnages of nodules and contained metals from nodule abundance areas (in square kilometers) determined by GIS ArcMap calculations based on JICA/MMAJ (2001) nodule distributions. The nodule tonnage calculated and summed from each abundance sector yields a total inferred resource estimate of 9.66 billion tonnes of nodules covering an area of 1.21 million square kilometers; using a cut-off of 6 kilograms of nodules per square meter, yields a median tonnage of 8.59 billion tonnes of nodules covering 687,647 square kilometers (Table 2).

Both ferromanganese crusts and nodules present potential processors with enormous volumes of tailings of dubious environmental character: most processing scenarios fail to utilize the uneconomic manganese itself, leaving a total waste volume on the order of 96% of the incoming ore. Each current disposal proposal seems flawed: (1) backhauling to the initial mine site is costly and might run afoul of EPA or UN marine dumping*regulations, (2) subsea disposal near a coastal processing site means almost inevitable community opposition, (3) agricultural soil amendment for improving barren lava or coral rubble appears to require prohibitive amounts of supplementary phosphate, and (4) the slag resulting from an energy intensive pyrometallurgical processing may have potential as road ballast, but few processors will opt for smelting in all but those locales where energy is very cheap. This unfortunately rules out a smelting operation in almost any Pacific Island environment. We envision at least one other scenario which could result in both the removal of tailings from a processing plant and an increase in the supply of useful building materials at little or no cost to either the processing or construction industries--transforming a tenacious waste into a novel resource. Ongoing experiments have demonstrated considerable potential for turning acid leach tailings into dark composite facing stone, fancy black tile, novelty ceramics or concrete aggregate. The tailings are commonly very fine grained and may also serve as an additive in drilling mud. Applications as an additive to asphalt also need to be explored. In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). "INTRODUCTIONThe majority of studies on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts focus on the adsorption and accumulation of metals, and therefore cations, especially those of economic interest. From these studies, a first-order electrochemical model has been proposed based on the zero point of charge of the manganese and iron oxides at typical seawater pH, which assumes that positively charged ions will bind to the negatively charged manganese oxide phase and neutral and negatively charged ions will bind to the slightly positively charged iron oxide phase (e.g. Koschinsky and Halbach,1995; Hein et al., 2013). While the theory behind this model is sound, and it has been consistent for many elements, other elements may not follow the model (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), and thus requires additional investigation and validation. As a new approach to understanding element accumulation in ferromanganese crusts and to test the proposed electrochemical model, this study investigates the surface chemistry of the halogens, which occur as negatively charged ions in seawater and have high and consistent concentrations in seawater.ResultsBulk Halogen ConcentrationsTo determine the distribution of halogens in ferromanganese crusts, an initial dataset of 24 FeMn crusts (24 bulk and 19 layer samples) from throughout the global ocean, including the Arctic and the Southern Oceans, has been analyzed for chlorine and fluorine content using ion-selective electrode. Although both Cl and F are conservative in seawater, their content in crusts shows striking variability (Cl: 326 - 13310 ppm; F: 146 – 1048 ppm for non-phosphatized crusts) and has no obvious geographic relationship to ocean basin and no correlation with water depth, latitude, or longitude. We plan to have bromine concentration data to present at the time of this conference."

Accumulation of cobalt -rich ferromanganese crusts on Pacific seamounts located off-ridge in the Hawaiian EEZ, represents a complex process that involves geologic aging of the seamounts, geographic transportation- of the seamounts on the Pacific plate during the past 80 million years, and geochemical history of the oceans for that period. A comparative study of the building and erosion processes of the young Loihi Submarine Volcano, located south of the Island of Hawaii , and the 80 million year old Cross Seamount, located west of Hawaii , shows that both edifices show wide armchair-shaped talus chutes and intervening ridges of exposed dikes. The similarity between the observed mass wasting process on Loihi and Cross suggests that the slopes of submarine volcanoes are geologically unstable from the time of their origin on the seafloor through their entire geological history. The slopes of Cross are covered by coalesced ferromanganese crust covered talus, steep exposed dike faces, and crust covered dike ridges. A study of the stratigraphy of the crusts shows a range of thicknesses and number of unconformities present. The thickest crusts, up to 8 centimeters, are found preserved within the larger coalesced slabs along the shallower slopes of the talus chutes and along the crests of the ridges between water depths of 400 and 1800 meters. The platinum content was used in stratigraphic correlation between the crusts in the coalesced slabs and those collected from ridges with the PISCES V submersible. "Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

"The underwater search for the passenger aircraft MH 370 produced rare high resolution datasets of the ocean floor of extraordinary size and detail. The survey design and operations were for sole purpose of finding the aircraft debris field. The aircraft was not found in the detailed search area and the survey was suspended. As planned, the data are now being made available to scientists and researchers. The large survey area includes geologic settings that might be prospective for seafloor minerals. A review of the data can provide insights to seafloor mineral prospectivity in the Southern Indian Ocean and is a large dataset that can be used to calibrate object detection for the design of dedicated mineral exploration surveys.Economic minerals in the Southern Indian OceanOceanographic research and scientific drilling cruises have assembled geologic and geophysical data points in the Southern Indian Ocean. These, together with satellite derived bathymetry and gravimetric data, earthquake mapping, and mapping of magnetic anomalies have, even if they lack detail, produced a general understanding of the main tectonic features and plate movements in the Southern Indian Ocean as well as contributed some marine mineral data.The Southeast Indian Ocean Manganese Pavement, a large manganese nodule field south of Diamantina Fracture Zone was discovered in 1970. Dredging and photographic data from the discovery cruise determined that dense nodule accumulations cover 900,000 sq. km."

The small-scale observations, mapping, sampling, and in-situ experiments have been carried out since 2009 using JAMSTEC ROVs at some model seamounts in the Northwestern Pacific seamounts. Laboratory analysis on mineralogy, chemistry, chronology indicated a continuous slow precipitation since the Middle Miocene, at water-depths 1-6 km, and the modern hydrogenetic precipitation even in the oxygen minimum zones. Thus the variability in abundance and grade of the deposits on regional, small and microscopic scales are determined by geological, geochemical, and hydrological conditions, resulting in the stacked piles of tiny precipitates from the seawaters.

The report is about oceanic ferromanganese crusts ? covers of iron and manganese hydroxides developed over an opened rock of seamounts and rises. Ore bed parameters of crusts are understandable as their thickness and content of main economic components ? manganese, cobalt and nickel. All known results of research activity on ferromanganese manganese crusts point to that crust are characterized by notable variability of thicknesses and composition. It is possible to separate few levels of variability. The most evident is the first level of parameters variability, which is manifested in various regions of the Ocean, and connected first of all, with an age of submarine mountains, a host objects for a crusts. It was proved by many authors, that most powerful crusts are connected with submarine mountains of Cretaceous age. [1]. Crust thickness at the Magellan Seamounts reaches, for example 12-15 cm, sometimes exceeds 20-22 cm. Thicknesses of Hawaii Archipelago or Tuamotu crusts in 3-4 times less. Biostratigraphy studies of crustal sections at the Magellan Seamounts already show, that its main part started to form in the Late Paleocene. Four layers with well expressed features in structure and composition of a layer are separated in the section. From foot to top: Late Paleocene ? Early Eocene layer I-1, Middle-Late-Eocene layer I-2, Miocene layer II and Pliocene ? Quaternary layer III. Relics of more ancient Campanian ? Maastrichtian ore layer [2, 4] were discovered. It is evident for example, that Oligocene mountains could not be a host for two lower layers in the crust section.

The Marine Minerals Technology Center has taken advantage of recent price and performance .improvements in PC hardware and software to upgrade its seismic acquisition system. In the past, single channel, high resolution, seismic data was displayed on an analog plotter and stored on tape. Associated navigation data was logged by hand or on a chart plotter. The navigation and seismic data were synchronized with time so that they could be cross referenced. The Center's new system uses PC's for the acquisition of both seismic and navigation data. Off the shelf software products were purchased for each task. Elics Delphl performs the seismic acquisition and processing, and GeoResearch, Inc. Geolink provides the navigation interface. A navigation string is sent from the navigation PC to the seismic PC via an RS232 line. This string consists of a time and location fix, as well as speed and heading data. The navigation string is then imbedded in the header of the seismic record. The Geolink software is capable of monitoring other devices in addition to the GPS used for positioning. Device inputs are attributed to the location data to provide easy construction of a navigation GIs. Currently the Center is logging fathometer data along with the navigation. As a result, a map of bathymetry along the tracklines can be available shortly after completion of the cruise.

This is a part of the joint KIGAM-GNS-NIWA 3-year study of ferromanganese modules in the Campbell Nodule Field, east of Campbell Plateau to determine age distribution, growth rates and geochemical evolution in relation to geographic setting. The petrography, chemistry, inferred genesis, and 10Be/9Be dating of the nodules were described in the science report of GNS (Chang et al., 2003a, 2003b; Graham et al., 2003a) and presented at UMI (Chang et al., 2003c; Graham et al., 2003b). The morphology and distribution of ferromanganese nodules were also published in detail (Wright et al., 2005). This presentation is only concentrated on the mineralogy and chemistry of the nodules.

Annual metal consumption per capita has increased several orders of magnitude worldwide since the turn of the 19th century, yet grades of terrestrial ores are decreasing as reserves dwindle. Consequently, deep sea metal deposits are gradually transitioning from identified resources to economically viable reserves. Deposits in the Red Sea deeps along the axial trough result from tectonic and local hydrothermal processes. Continental rifting and ocean floor spreading produce fresh oceanic crust; concurrently, seafloor evaporites flow into the spreading zone and form isolated deeps. The deeps are often filled with hot stratified brines maintained by locally discharged fluids during hydrothermal circulation. Metalliferous sediments precipitate from the brines within the deeps. The ongoing multipronged study at KAUST involves: (1) acoustic characterization of the metalliferous accumulations using advanced signal processing techniques that capture the physics of granular materials; (2) comprehensive mineralogical and textural characterization of sampled sediments using SEM, EDS, XRD, XRF, and ICP-OES; (3) multiphysics instruments deployed to measure undisturbed sediment properties in-situ; (4) development of a distributed seafloor observatory for monitoring field operations; (5) innovative concentration and separation technologies; and (6) new strategies for proper tailings disposal purposely conceived for the unique field conditions in the Red Sea deeps.

Seafloor polymetallic sulphides are distributed in the EEZ of Japan, including substantial deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Bonin back-arc basin. In this new frontier, the successful development of these resources in Japan is expected to bring about a new domestic supply of mineral resources. The initial stages of this development are authorized by the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, approved by the Japanese Cabinet on April 26, 2013, and the Plan for the Development of Marine Energy and Mineral Resources, formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 24, 2013. In 2008, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), commissioned by METI, began a survey and technological development programme for the development of the seafloor polymetallc sulphides (PMS) based on these Plans. The examination of four different fields: the evaluation of the amount of the resource, environmental assessment, mining technology, and processing & smelting technology, are concurrently promoted, aiming for commercialization as soon as possible. Based on the results of research for properties of geomorphology and marine environments of the target test sites in the Okinawa trough, which have been ongoing for several years, the preparation of the pilot lifting test included an in-situ excavation and crushing test conducted using test excavating and crushing systems.

The traditional method of deep sea manganese nodule exploration is to conduct grid survey and sampling on successively finer scales until a suitable deposit has been delineated. Clearly this is both time consuming and ultimately self-defeating if large areas of the ocean floor are to be explored on a human timescale. A conceptual deductive approach would be preferable if one could be found, as it would aim to outline areas of potentially economic nodules on the basis of easily measurable oceanographic parameters. An attempt to achieve this aim in the Central Pacific is outlined below. Nodule Distribution in the Central Pacific Ocean Maps of ore grade nodules in the Central Pacific show that they are confined to two zones trending roughly east-west which are well separated in the eastern Pacific but which tend to converge towards 170-180ºW. They follow the isolines of intermediate biological productivity in the surface waters, strongly suggestive of a biological control on their distribution. Within these zones the nodules preferentially occupy basin areas. Thus they are found in the Penrhyn Basin, Tokelau Basin, Central Pacific Basin, Clarion Clipperton Zone and Tiki Basin. Nodules in all these areas have features in common and are thought to have obtained their distinctive composition by similar processes.

It has been long known that manganese nodules occur more or less in some part of marginal seas in West Pacific Ocean. On the other hand, it is difficult to understand their distribution and the genesis as those nodule samples were collected mostly by dredge from the deep basins generally has much higher sedimentation rate than the open ocean. For example, the sedimentation rate in the South China Sea is about three orders of magnitudes than that in region of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone. In June of 2013, a small seamount (named as Jiaolong Seamount), consisting of southern part and northern part with a distance of about 3 km each other, was visited by DSV Jiaolong/RV XiangYangHong 9. It is discovered that abundant manganese nodules exist only on the surface sediment in the southern part with a water depth of about 3800 m to 3300m, on the platforms nearby an obvious crater where volcanic rocks exposed on the wall. There are no any nodules be observed on the sediment in the northern part of the seamount (about 100 m deeper than the southern part) and surrounding deep basin (approximately 4000 m in water depth). It is speculated that a source of core for manganese nodule and a dynamic sedimentation environment, are two major governors for the growth and distribution of manganese nodule in the marginal seas.

Lemkein seamount located in the west of the Kuwajleen Atoll of RMI is a relatively samll, simple-shaped, peaked type seamount with its base at 4,500 m and summit at 1,452 m water depths. Ferromanganese crusts were identified in the water depth range between 2,000 m and 2,500 m, and they were mostly observed on the northern slopes of the seamount. Among various substrate rocks, breccia occurred most commonly with crusts and formed the thickest crust layers. Average thickness of the Lemkein crusts was about 5 cm. Their chemical compositions were similar to other crusts found in the RMI area; Mn=25.82%, Fe=15.29%, Co=0.74%, Ni=0.56%. Lemkein crusts were characterized by their four distinctive internal layers; 1) Massive Layer 1; 2)Porous, Fe-stained or sediment infilled Layer 2; 3) Massive to slightly porous Layer 3; and, 4)Massive, Dense, Phosphotized, CFA veined Layer 4. Layers 1 and 2 were generally similar in composition, but highest Co concentrations were measured in Layer 1 while relatively higher concentrations of Al, Rb, Fe, and Ti were observed in Layer 2. Layer 3 showed higher concentrations of Ca and P than Layers 1 and 2. Based on the Co-chronography, the age of Layer 1 is 0¡?6 Ma (growth rate = 1.50 mm/Ma), Layer 2 is 6¡?15 Ma (1.75 mm/Ma), Layer 3 is 15¡?27Ma (1.76 mm/Ma), and Layer 4 is 27¡?45 Ma (2.06 mm/Ma). These preliminary results indicated that high Co contents in Layer 1 resulted from slow growth rates; Layer 2 was formed under relatively strong influence of high terrestrial input; and, Layer 3 was probably affected by a minor phosphatization event occurring in 15 Ma.

Exploration for active seafloor hydrothermal vent fields has been highly successful, and more than 300 such fields have been discovered to date. Some will most probably be mined, given their high metal grades (Cu, Zn, Au and others). However, the current practice detects active systems, and activity rates, not the size of the deposits. This strategy may leave undetected some of the best targets, for several reasons as follows: 1. Large hydrothermal plumes are a measure of dispersion of ore components, not of efficiency in the generation of orebodies; 2. Deposits formed a few hundred years (or more) before present will generally have ceased their activity and will not be detected by plume studies; 3. Deposits formed under a cover rock (up to a few meters of sediments, volcaniclastics, or the like) may exhibit only minor seafloor hydrothermal activity, possibly diffuse flow. Cover rocks will often host hanging wall rock alteration, expressed in geochemical and mineralogical haloes. It has been demonstrated in many instances, especially for deposits formed in the geological past, now exposed on land, that ore genesis under a cover rock is one of the most suitable processes for generating large massive sulfide deposits. One of the great challenges for submarine resource knowledge will be to develop adequate exploration strategies for sizeable orebodies, not necessarily hydrothermal vent fields, sometimes hidden under a cover rock.

"INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are a kind of marine chemical sediment composed of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides as well as small amounts of clastic sediments, which are ubiquitously found on the surface of slopes of seamounts and oceanic plateaus at depths from 900 to 5500 meters below sea level (mbsl). Fe-Mn crusts contain extremely high concentrations of useful minor metals such as Co, Ni, Te, REEs, and thus are expected as submarine mineral resources. Also, Fe-Mn crusts record the change of chemical compositions of seawater during last several tens million years, which allow us to obtain clues to clarify the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of its deposition. However, occurrence, chemical compositions, microbial community and growth patterns of ferromanganese crusts are yet fully understood. Hence, a comprehensive study on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts, such as growth rates and enrichment processes of elements, is required to better understand their resource potential as well as their applications to paleoceanographic study.Based on the resource potential of ferro-manganese crust, the project entitled “Next- Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration” was launched as one of the governmental projects to develop the exploration technology based on the scientific research on the submarine resources such as hydrothermal deposits (e.g., a poster by Kawada et al.), ferro-manganese crusts. We have made several research cruise to seamounts in the north-western Pacific such as Takuyo-Daigo and Takuyo-Daisan seamounts (Fig. 1) ."

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus, but those who have an economic interest have the following composition: Mn 29%, Fe 6% Si 5%, Al 3%, Ni 1.4%, Cu 1.3%, Co 0.25%, Na 1.5%, Ca 1.5%, Mg 0.5%, K 0.5%, Ti 0.2 0.2% and Ba 0.2% (Morgan, 2000; ISA, 2002). The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules (Glasby et al., 1980; Morgan, 2000). According to these authors, the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000m (Morgan et al., 1993). In studies conducted in the EEZ of the Mexican Pacific are those made within the project "Research on the origin, process and distribution of minerals in the Pacific ocean floor in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico". Within this project Rosales (1989) conducted studies on the origin, process and distribution of polymetallic nodules, finding that a number of processes give origin to nodules, being diagenesis one of the main mechanisms of elements that contribute to the nodules. Besides hydrothermal processes that are carried near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, inputs are contributing to the nodules metallic elements and sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes occurs westward (Rosales and Carranza, 1990). In 1993, after cruise MIMAR II, Carranza and Rosales refer that metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba may have a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn).

Activities of Brazil in relation to deep seabed mineral resources development are carried out in the framework of two main national programmes. They are: (1) the Program for the Assessment of Mineral Resources of the Brazilian Continental Shelf (REMPLAC) and (2) the Programme for Prospecting and Exploration of Mineral Resources of the Area in the South Equatorial and Atlantic Ocean (PROAREA). REMPLAC aim to research and increase knowledge of the seabed and sub-soil, as well as to collect the necessary information to allow integrated management of the Brazilian Continental Shelf. Among the various research projects undertaken or planned on the framework of REMPLAC are: geology of the Brazilian continental shelf and adjacent ocean areas, organized in geological information system; digital bathymetric charts of the inner continental shelf at 1:100,000 scale; systematic research for sands, gravels, carbonates; placers, phosphorites, coal, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulphides and Gas hydrates. The PROAREA was prepared with three initial projects starting in 2010. One of them, the Project Geology of the South Atlantic and Equatorial organized in a Geographic Information System, aims to collect, collate, integrate and make available in a single environment all geo-referenced data and information available in Brazil and abroad on geology and mineral resources of the South Atlantic Ocean. The other two projects are for the research of cobalt-rich crust and polimetallic sulphides. These programme are developed with the participation of various segments of government agencies, research institutions and public enterprises. Marine scientific research and other activities from REMPLAC and PROAREA are carried out in partnership between the Geological Survey of Brazil, national research institutions from several Brazilian universities and the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation from the Brazilian Navy.
