Clark volcano is a large volcanic center on the active arc front of the intraoceanic Kermadec arc. It is one of the two southern-most Kermadec arc volcanoes (the other being Whakatane volcano) that sits on oceanic crust before the transition to continental New Zealand, and is underlain by the 17-km-thick Hikurangi Plateau, which is presently subducting beneath the southern section of the Kermadec arc. Unusual K-rich basaltic lavas have been recovered from Clark (1.5 to 2.25 wt.% K2O), together with more typical basaltic-andesite, andesite and dacite rocks. The total volume of the Clark volcanic center is ~90 km3, calculated from the summit of the volcano down to the 2,500 m contour (which marks the inflection point of the volcano flanks with the surrounding seafloor) and comprises two separate edifices similar in size; the northern one having a volume of ~4.57 km3 and the southern one 4.43 km3. The volcano has a maximum relief of ~1,645 m from the 2,500 m contour to the summit of the shallower northern edifice shoaling to 855 m below sea level. The northern edifice is comprised of twin peaks each consisting of a constructional cone, with evidence of sector collapse having occurred between the cones. A more recent, smaller cone again has grown on the eastern flank between these summit cones. Massive, blocky lavas and coarse talus dominate the summits of the cones, with finer-grained volcaniclastic material and sediments a feature of the volcano flanks. The southern edifice is noticeably more dissected than the northern one, having a pronounced horst in the centre of the volcano bounded by 5-6 km-long faults. There is no obvious constructional cone atop the southern volcanic edifice.

Marine minerals are more than an academic curiosity as they represent the most significant global source of mineral materials for economically and ecologically sustainable development for the future. Minerals research is traditionally carried out by industry and thus, in the United States at least, applied research in marine minerals may not get the share of government funding or attention that more exotic programs for space exploration or future global disasters engender. Two recent events have significantly changed the status of marine minerals. Discoveries made in the last thirty five years indicate that the potential for mineral occurrences in the oceans and seabeds, area for area, is as high as for terrestrial lands. On this basis the global mineral resource base has been recently increased by a factor of four of which three quarters is underwater. The recently enacted Law of the Sea has mandated what is probably the most far reaching re-distribution of natural resources in human history, and has resulted in a peaceful subdivision of seabed jurisdictions between the coastal nations of the world which should significantly affect future mineral markets and the balance of economic powers. Significant applied research efforts are ongoing for marine minerals as an adjunct to commercial production in southern Africa for diamonds; and in many other parts of the world for sands for beach and coastal protection. Forward planing, including research and development activities focussed on future commercial production of metalliferous oxides, continues in Korea, China, Japan, India, and with lesser activity, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and the CIS. Annual expenditures for this work amount to millions of dollars. In all cases the environmental aspects of commercial produc¬tion are a significant part of the research. Geologic studies on the occurence and distribution of metal sulfides at plate boundaries continue on a regional basis in the Pacific.

Onslow Bay is a broad, shallow, high-energy shelf system bounded by the Cape Lookout and Frying Pan shoals. It is generally a sediment-starved shelf system dominated by hardbottoms with a scattered and discontinuous veneer of mobile Holocene sediments. Phosphate-rich beds of the Miocene Pungo River Formation crop out in a belt 150 km long and up to 50 km wide across the continental shelf in Onslow Bay, North Carolina. Previous research has demonstrated that a few of these beds contain vast quantities of potentially economic phosphate resources that occur in the surface and shallow subsurface sediments. Onslow Bay contains five phosphate-bearing beds predicted to include up to 20.7 billion tons of in-place phosphate concentrate with total sediment grades ranging up to 22.9% P2O5 and adjusted average concentrate grades of 29.8% P2O5. These phosphates are lithologically and chemically similar to phosphates currently being mined in the nearby Aurora phosphate district in North Carolina. Various lithologies of the Pungo River Formation and associated rock units of Oligocene and Quaternary age crop out on the sea floor to form extensive hardbottom habitats that dominate almost 100% of Onslow Bay. A large proportion of these hardbottoms appear to be sea floor deserts, whereas others are virtual oases with rich associations of benthic organisms. These important differences in benthic community structure appear to be greatly influenced by one or more of the following variables: 1) geologic framework (geologic formation, hardbottom composition, morphology, and spatial orientation relative to dominant currents and waves), 2) texture, movement, and accumulation of surface sediments, and 3) flow rates and chemical composition of discharged submarine groundwater.

Diamond mega-placers, in order to rank amongst the primary diamond deposits, are defined as => 70 m carats at =>95% gem quality. There is only one mega-placer known and that is found along the coast of southwestern Africa fringing the Kaapvaal craton. Placers are classified as residual when they are left on the craton, transient when being eroded into the exit drainage and terminal. Terminal placers, in being the final depositories of diamonds off the craton, have the greatest probability of being a mega-placer and such is the case in the placer deposits near the Orange River mouth, southwestern Africa. There are four main groups of conditions leading to the development of a mega-placer: the craton, the drainage, the nature of the environment at the terminus and the timing. The craton, in its role as the producer of diamonds is significant in respect to its size, diamond-fertility, the degree to which diamonds from successive kimberlite intrusions have been retained there and their availability to the final drainage yielding the mega-placer. Cratons in being buoyant have a tendency to leak diamonds into surrounding basins but in being incompressible often have orogens converge onto them resulting in lost sediment being returned as foreland basin fills. In order to concentrate a bulk of diamonds the drainage basin has to be large with a high proportion of it on the craton. The drainage yielding the mega-placer should ideally not have been preceded by older drainage and other systems that may have robbed the craton of earlier diamonds. The exits of diamonds from the craton need to be few in order to focus on their supply and the drainage network needs to be efficient in order to remove the maximum volume of diamonds off the craton. This efficiency and the focused termination is best achieved by the rejuvenation of a pre-existing drainage network. The drainage should be young enough to yield host sediments friable enough to allow brittle diamonds to be recovered from them.

The Logatchev hydrothermal field is situated on the east inner flank of the rift valley of the MAR at 14°45?N and is hosted by serpentinized peridotites and minor gabbronorites while basalts are subordinate. Hydrothermal precipitates recovered from the Logatchev field during a recent R/V Meteor cruise include massive chalcopyrite chimneys, massive pyrite crusts, silicified breccias, abundant secondary Cu-sulfides, red jaspers, abundant Fe-Mn-oxyhydroxides as well as atacamite and Mn-oxides (Kuhn et al., 2004). Previous results of hydrothermal fluid studies in the Logatchev field are somewhat at odds with theoretical models of ultramafic-seawater reaction. Butterfield et al. (2003) suggested that the Fe component of orthopyroxene plays the more important role compared to olivine in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems. This consideration is supported by the recovery of large amounts of Opx-rich gabbronorites and orthopyroxenites in the Logatchev field (Kuhn et al., 2004). A possible tool to constrain the contribution of the different rock types (ultramafics, mafics, MORB) to a seafloor hydrothermal system is the systematic analysis of 187/188Os ratios of the host rocks as educts and the sulfides as products. For instance, abyssal peridotites mainly display low 187/188Os ratios (<0.127); in contrast MORB and gabbronorites have radiogenic ratios of >0.13 (Snow and Reisberg, 1995), orthopyroxenite has ratios of about 0.174 (Büchl et al., 2002) and seawater has an ever higher 187/188Os of about 1 (Sharma et al., 1997). Therefore, massive sulfides predominantly leached from ultramafic rocks should have Os isotopic ratios plotting on a mixing line between the ultramafic rocks and seawater (in a 187/188Os vs. 1/Os diagram), whereas those derived from MORB, gabbronorites and/or orthopyroxenites will be plotting on different mixing lines.

A number of Articles contained in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea III (UNCLOS) bear directly on legal issues related to the recovery of mineral deposits on the ocean floor. Mineral resources of the continental margin other than oil, gas and hydrates include, sand, gravel, shell, coral, gemstones and phosphorite. Jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of these deposits is determined either by the Territorial Sea claims of a coastal state or their recognized sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). At least 33 coastal states have the right under Article 76 (Continental Shelf regime) to claim seabed jurisdiction beyond 200 nautical miles (EEZ limit). In addition, several states have "Pioneer Investor" status with regard to seabed resources in international waters (The Area). A global maritime boundary database (GMBD) has been developed as a basic resource identifying the current claims of coastal states. It provides detailed information on existing boundaries and limits determined by the UNCLOS accords or by multi-lateral agreements which affect mineral exploration and exploitation. This paper will describe the GMBD and its construction and maintenance.

A C-CORE study on behalf of the government of Newfoundland identified the inner continental shelf off northeast Newfoundland as having a relatively higher potential for hosting placer gold than other parts of the inner shelf. Under the auspices of the Canada-Newfoundland Cooperation Agreement on Mineral Development, the Geological Survey of Canada conducted a three-year project to map the distribution of surficial sediments and the abundance of placer minerals (particularly gold) from White Bay to Cape Freels. Much of the study area is a fjord coast, with steep rocky slopes and scattered gravel beaches. The extreme east, from Hamilton Sound to Cape Freels, has a wide, shallow inner shelf, sandy beaches, and extensive coastal dunes. Relative sea level was high in the late glacial period. It has fallen continuously in the west, but in the east it dropped to -19 m, before rising to within several metres of the present level by 3 ka. In terms of surficial sediments and processes, five zones are identified: (1) Deep offshore deep basins that contain thick postglacial mud overlying glacialmarine gravelly sandy mud. This zone is below a depth of 370 m in White Bay, 300 m in the Notre Dame Basin. 2) Basin transition zone in which the sea bed has been eroded by currents, so that glacialmarine sediments are exposed in places. Winnowing has formed an uppermost layer of muddy gravel. There is a slight potential for enhanced levels of fine particulate gold, but the gold would not be exploitable. (3) Iceberg impacted zone Above 200 m the keels of icebergs impact the sea bed, causing furrowing and pitting. Furrows predominate in deeper areas, and pits are concentrated at the inner boundary of this zone. Iceberg turbates have developed in shallow waters (60-100 m). Combined with winnowing, iceberg turbation could enhance the potential for concentration of fine particulate gold, but not into economic quantities. 4) Wave dominated zone Above approximately 60 m the sea-bed sediments are highly mobile due to waves, currents, and iceberg impact. Williamson & Associates, Inc. has developed a marine mineral exploration tool using an induced polarization technology (IP) under license from the US Geological Survey. Developed by Jeff Wynn at the USGS, this method has gone through several prototyping stages and is now in commercial use to map offshore ilmenite deposits. Preliminary results of a recent resource mapping program are discussed as well as potential applications in the detection and quantification of other minerals in marine sediments.

In the last two years, C-CORE has developed a new seabed sampler directed specifically at obtaining samples from hard or compacted bottoms such as are typical of marine placer deposits. Samples are required for appraisal of concentrations of saleable commodities, and for determination of levels of biological indicators in the deposits. Recently C-CORE and the University of Victoria have been comparing the performance of the Scott/C-CORE sampler with that of the Van Veen sampler often used for biological sampling. Initial trials of the Scott/C-CORE sampler in 1992 at the WestGold mining site, Nome, Alaska, were described by Jewitt et al. at the 1993 UMI. Since that time the sampler has been modified to prevent overfilling, and to limit turbulent flow of water across the top of the sampler buckets when the sampler is recovered with partly-open buckets. The modifications included shoes to prevent sampler overfill, and flexible rubber shielding over top and sides of the sampler to prevent water circulation. Samples have been taken with both samplers in two field areas, one at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland, and the other near Long Pond in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland. In each area multiple samples were taken with both sampler types, and the samples processed immediately to establish the types and quantities of marine organisms that were present. Species identification is expected to be complete by late August.

In October-November 1993, the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering, Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Victoria jointly carried out reconnaissance surveys at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland. Pine Cove is the site of a multi-year study examining the environmental impact of a shallow water small-scale marine placer gold mining operation. The reconnaissance survey data collected will be used to develop a multi-year environmental effects monitoring (EEM) program for Pine Cove, Baie Verte, but more generally an EEM protocol for shallow water small-scale marine placer mining, which meets the requirements of Canadian government regula¬tors such as Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Pine Cove mining operation is currently scheduled for the summer of 1995, and will use two mining methods: a hydraulic suction dredge in shallow water (<10 meters) operated by a scuba diver, and a hydraulically actuated clamshell dredge in deeper water (-30 m). A centrifugal concentrator will be used to extract the heavy minerals from the mined marine sediments, and the tailings will be returned to the sea floor via a suspended discharge pipe. The reconnaissance work at Pine Cove included geophysical, geochemical, oceanographic and biologi¬cal surveys, providing data which will enable prediction of the potential environmental impacts of the proposed mining operation. The Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center has recently completed field tests of the percussion- waterlift drill and the vibracore/vibralift convertible drill. The two systems have been modified from existing drills to increase their effectiveness and flexibility for nearshore minerals exploration. Originally the percussion-waterlift drill was designed for iand based operations, but it has been modified for use in protected shallow water areas. This drill is easily maintained, inexpensive to construct and operate, and is able to accurately recover representative samples from a variety of sedimentary deposits. Sampling is accomplished using either a reverse circulation method for the recovery of a slurry of sediment cuttings and water or employing a thin walled "Shelby tube" to core zones of interest. The vibracore/vibralift convertible drill is a modification of the remote placer drill (RPD). By combining these drills into one convertible system, it is possible to recover continuous cores of unconsolidated fine-grained sediments (vibracore), a slurry of clay to gravel size sediments over 1.0 meter intervals (vibralift), and to sample sedimentary material in environments where indurated

"The conceptual basis of the developed model is based on the ideas that evolution of geological-geomorphological structure of the CCZ is controlled by four types of geologic factors: geodynamic, sedimentary, volcano-tectonic and erosion-lithodynamic. In terms of time span two factors (geodynamic and sedimentary) can be considered as permanent and the other two as sporadic.The geodynamic factor is responsible for two interrelated geological processes. One is going under conditions of the axial zones of spreading centers and results in formation of the CCZ basement. Historically this process is considered as a starting point for each of the heterochronous fragments of the CCZ. The second one controls gradual shifting towards the Pacific Plate (Hawaiian direction) and subsidence to greater depths of the neogenic fragments (basement). Thus, those processes control basic topography, geomorphology and the seabed depth within the CCZ.Volcanogenic-hydrothermal activity of the EPR is one of the main sources of the ore components, which finally compose manganese nodules as a result of complicated processes of their dissemination and transportation to the bottom in dissolved and organically bound forms.The role of the other constant factor (sedimentary) is displayed in two ways. Firstly, initial relief is smoothed under the influence of this factor, which, subsequently, makes favorable conditions for manganese nodules formation. Secondly, it favors transportation of the majority of the ore components, participating in manganese nodules formation into zones of active nodules formation."

Deepsea Mining will soon become a reality with Nautilus Minerals getting their equipment ready to mine SMS at Solwara 1 off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The vertical transport system (VTS) adopted by Nautilus consists of a riser hanging ‘freely’ from the mining production vessel with a lifting pump unit suspended at its lower end. A compliant jumper connects the pump to the seabed crawler without restraining its movements. In this free-hanging VTS arrangement, the vessel can be re-positioned to follow the crawler should it want to extend the mining area and start stretching the jumper. A recently proposed alternative to this is a free-standing VTS whereby the riser is grounded on the seabed with a base and maintained in an upright position by distributed buoyancy modules or a buoyancy tank at the top. A compliant jumper connects the seabed crawler to the riser base, and another connects the riser top to the vessel. In this free-standing arrangement, the entire VTS can be lifted clear of the seabed for relocation to a new mining area. This paper will describe the important features of the two options and discuss the advantages and disadvantages in respect of riser dynamic behavior, water depth, weather and mining windows, pump maintenance, installation and retrieval, continency measures, etc. The two systems will also be appraised separately for mining SMS and SMnN deposits.

The needs of the on-going basic maintenance operations and proposed enhancement and hurricane protection projects in the City of Virginia Beach exceed the capability land-slide sources of sand. Through the past several years our studies have concentrated on locating and defining suitable quantities of sand appropriate for use on the area&apos;s beaches and assessing some of the consequences of dredging in shallow offshore areas. By providing information concerning the geological setting of sand resources, the local wave climate, and benthic infauna, the overall research project has strengthened the knowledge and understanding of several facets of Virginia&apos;s inner continental shelf. We have identified three distinct settings for deposits of beach-quality sand, two of which (filled channels and surficial shoals) are distinguishable in relatively unprocessed sub-bottom profiles and cores. The third, a sand facies within a larger stratum, is discernable only with a suite of cores. Sandbridge Shoal, about 5 km offshore of the resort and residential community of Sandbridge appears to contain a substantial quantity of sand that could be exploited with comparatively few problems. It already is designated as the source of material for use in a shoreline protection protect for a federal facility. Fluvial(?) fill of a late Pleistocene channel lust offshore of the main, commercial, resort area may offer a proximal alternative to existing and proposed resources. Ongoing work to describe the local wave climate and the possible impacts of anthropogenic alterations of the bottom topography on wave transformation and studies of the biological community as it might be affected by dredging will help fill-out our series of studies. Prior to utilization of the resource additional work is needed to provide better definition of the limits and magnitude of the sand bodies. Finally decisions concerning the use of specific resources will have to include physical, biological, economic, technical, and social considerations.

One of the numerous challenge for underwater mining is the positioning. This paper describes an architecture for the integration of an Ultra Short BaseLine (USBL), an Acoustic Synthetic BaseLine (ASBL) operating in Sparse Array mode and a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) closely coupled with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) for precise subsea positioning in severe environments. By using such architectures, the INS can help to reduce the noise on the measurements coming from acoustic sensors. Another advantage is the capability to reduce the number of required transponders on the seabed, and as a consequence, reduce the time for the deployment and calibration of each transponder. The paper further describes sea-trials performed to assess the ability of a complete positioning system to provide decimetric positioning precision even with a single beacon deployed in the navigation area.

Williamson and Associates, Inc of Seattle, Washington has recently built a remotely operated seafloor coring system for Nichiyu Giken Kogyo Ltd and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ). The system is designed to core to depths of 20 meters in 6,000 meters of water and will be operated from MMAJ&apos;s research vessel Hakurei-Maru No. 2 The corer uses rotary rod coring methods and will recover a core diameter of 44 mm. To facilitate coring through soft or unstable formations, the corer has the ability to set casing. The corer is fitted with thrusters for positioning during landing and telescoping legs for leveling. The system is operated through a 12 km electro-optical cable. Data displayed to the operator provides the operator with real-time feed back and control over the coring process. The operator has independent proportional control over bit weight, advance rate, rotary speed, and flushing water flow. The process of making up, breaking down and storing the drill string is automated and is controlled by a logic driven software routine. The system is currently undergoing trials in Japan. This presentation will discuss the drill&apos;s capabilities and should be of interest to those in need of a tool for assessing the thickness of marine mineral deposits.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts.
