Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.

INTRODUCTION Airlift pumping, utilize compressed air that is injected at the bottom of a vertical pipe submerged in the water, reduces the mixture density inside the pipe and lifts the liquid or mixture of liquid and solids. This type of pumping technology, which is simple and without moving parts submerged in water, which provides several advantages compared to the mechanical pumping. Airlift is used in various difficult pumping applications such as transport of fluids corrosive to metals, explosives, nuclear and toxic materials in chemical industries, diamond mining and coal transport. Application of airlift to deep sea mining conditions was investigated by extensive laboratory experiments [1], theoretical analysis [2], and limited proof of concept field studies [3] starting in 1970’s with the discovery of huge amounts of manganese nodules discovered on the seabed at a depth of ranging from 4000 to 6000 m . Even after extensive investigations over the last five decades, there exists no commercial application of airlift technology for lifting of minerals. The major problems with the application airlift for deep ocean mining was (a) lack of control over the expansion of the injected gas, which increases the velocity in upper part of the riser pipe (b) lower efficiency compared to mechanical pumping [3]. Different flow regimes are encountered in airlift pumping: bubble, slug, churn and annular flow. Annular flow regime is the least efficient in lifting of particles and churn flow has better efficiency [3].

Hawai&apos;i is surrounded by a series of potentially valuable marine mineral deposits. These include manganese nodules between Hawai&apos;i and Mexico, cobalt-rich manganese crusts and phosphorites in the Exclusive Economic Zone around the Hawaiian Island Archipelago, Johnston Island and the neigh- boring island states and sand and gravel deposits off the main Hawaiian Islands largely in State waters. Hawai&apos;i has an economy that is very narrowly based on the tourist industry. In an effort to avoid the difficulties coming from such a vulnerable economy, significant efforts have been made toward economic diversification. The State has set up a range of programs looking to find new industries. New ocean industries figure prominently among these efforts as Hawai&apos;i is surrounded by ocean. Naturally, among new ocean industries the potential for new marine mineral industries is significant given that Honolulu is the only full service port in the Central Pacific and Hawai&apos;i is in the middle of the mineral belt. The port of Honolulu is now being actively used by mineral exploration vessels of several countries and with the current number of ship visits varying from 10-15 per year, this puts several million dollars a year into the State economy. It helps to fulfill the State&apos;s goal of dynamic growth in the ocean sector of the economy. Nonetheless, a major marine minerals industry, particularly one which would involve processing of minerals in Hawai&apos;i, is controversial in a State whose main source of revenue is tourist expenditures based on the image of a pristine environment. In addition to the perceived threat to the hotel and fishing industry, is the whole highly emotional debate concerning preservation and development. To complicate the issue further, the major interest in developing a marine minerals is currently largely from Korea and China rather than from domestic U.S. industry. On the other side of the debate is the fact that the State&apos;s economy is hampered by many low paying jobs and a lack of technical jobs. This is further exacerbated by the fact that lower paying jobs are held disproportionately by people of Hawaiian and Pacific Island ancestry. Naturally, this leads over time to a certain amount of resentment. The higher paying technical lobs associated with a minerals processing industry could help to alleviate this problem.

"Mineral deposits found near seafloor hydrothermal venting are of great economic interest. Valuable metals such as gold, copper, zinc, and other polymetallic sulfides are found in appreciable grades in seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits associated with these vents. For mapping these deposits, electromagnetic prospecting is one geophysical method that is very useful because copper/gold rich deposits are highly conductive.Ocean Floor Geophysics (OFG) in 2008 developed the first EM system to successfully map the limits of conductive mineralization in a survey at the Solwara 1 deposit (Kowalczyk, 2008). Since then, towed coincident loop time domain systems have been developed by Waseda University (Nakayama and Saito, 2016) and have successfully detected known mineralization buried at 30m depth. Using a deep tow controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) array, very clear anomalies have been measured (Murton, 2017) over known mineralization at the TAG field on the mid-Atlantic ridge.In 2014 and 2015, OFG partnered with Fukada Salvage and Marine Co. Ltd. and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to map methane hydrate deposits off the coast of Japan using a towed controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) system developed by Scripps. These hydrate deposits are resistive targets, and the Scripps system successfully mapped subsurface electrical resistivity distributions to depths of several 100 metres below the seafloor. OFG is attempting to extend the Scripps CSEM technology to map subsurface conductive SMS deposits to a similar range of depths below the seafloor."

"SUMMARYThis paper describes challenges faced when executing a programme of monitoring to measure the dynamics of currents and sediment plumes at a seamount and the solutions identified to deliver the measurements. The study site was the Tropic Seamount, which extends some 3300m above the surrounding seabed and is found at the southern limit of the Canary Island Seamount Province. The purpose of the study, which forms part of the Marine E-tech project, was to provide information on the interaction of flows with the seamount and to assess the behaviour of sediment plumes that could be generated from potential seabed mining operations targeting the recovery of ferromanganese crusts. Since the crest of the seamount is submerged to a depth of 1000m, much of the work was undertaken using remotely operated and autonomous vehicles supported by measurements from the surface vessel. Despite only limited information on currents being available for planning purposes, the combination of short term forecasting using a 3-dimesional hydrodynamic model of the study area coupled with the collection and analysis of reconnaissance data collected during the first phase of measurement activities made it possible to plan and execute a number of detailed hydrodynamic experiments on the seamount crest. The results of these experiments have advanced the understanding of the behaviour of sediment plumes in the deep ocean and will ultimately improve our ability to manage the impacts which may arise from deep sea mining operations."

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) entered into force, for those nations who had ratified it, on November 16, 1994. The Convention deals with nearly every aspect of ocean affairs, including marine scientific research, fishing zones, freedom of the high seas, protection of the marine environment and deep seabed mining. Article 76 of the Convention defines edge of the continental shelf in a way that many earth scientists find bizarre. Out to this limit, a coastal state has sovereignty over the seabed and sub-seafloor resources. Beyond that limit, the key principle of UNCLOS, that "the resources of the deep seabed represent the common heritage of mankind and should be developed to benefit all nations" is invoked. Establishing that limit and managing development in the different areas of jurisdiction is no small task. Canada&apos;s continental shelf as defined by UNCLOS covers an area approximately equal to half the area of the Canadian land mass. Interpretation and application of the convention is therefore highly significant for Canada. For example, the sedimentary basin in which the offshore Hibernia oil field is found, extends beyond the 200 mile limit but lies predominantly within the limits of the (UNCLOS) continental shelf. Responsibility for development of inshore placer deposits rests firmly with the coastal state. However, development of deep sea mining, in which the international community plays a management role under UNCLOS, has raised many concerns. Of particular interest to Canada will be the application of the provisions of the convention to interest in the polymetallic sulfides sampled on the mid-ocean ridges such as the Juan da Fuca Ridge. A further complicating factor for Canada is management of fishing stocks. Canada has sought to resolve this "problem" through multilateral negotiations under the UN. Under its "Oceans Act," currently being debated by Parliament, Canada intends to become a world leader in oceans and marine resource management. Similar activity in most maritime nations is setting the stage for a revolution in the way in which use of the world&apos;s oceans is managed. Much of this revolution will be guided by UNCLOS. Coastal states that have ratified the convention have ten years in which to define the limits of their continental shelves the clock is already ticking for them! We have yet to see how their actions will guide, or be guided by, those who have not yet ratified. We also have yet to see how national legislation and aspirations will mesh with international conventions that were drawn up in a previous era of environmental standards. This is a time in which many questions have been raised and few firm answers received. However, we must ensure that everyone is aware of what is happening, with what potential consequences, in order that rational decisions can be made. Canada has taken a few small steps that it is happy to share with the world community.

Activities of Brazil in relation to deep seabed mineral resources development are carried out in the framework of two main national programmes. They are: (1) the Program for the Assessment of Mineral Resources of the Brazilian Continental Shelf (REMPLAC) and (2) the Programme for Prospecting and Exploration of Mineral Resources of the Area in the South Equatorial and Atlantic Ocean (PROAREA). REMPLAC aim to research and increase knowledge of the seabed and sub-soil, as well as to collect the necessary information to allow integrated management of the Brazilian Continental Shelf. Among the various research projects undertaken or planned on the framework of REMPLAC are: geology of the Brazilian continental shelf and adjacent ocean areas, organized in geological information system; digital bathymetric charts of the inner continental shelf at 1:100,000 scale; systematic research for sands, gravels, carbonates; placers, phosphorites, coal, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulphides and Gas hydrates. The PROAREA was prepared with three initial projects starting in 2010. One of them, the Project Geology of the South Atlantic and Equatorial organized in a Geographic Information System, aims to collect, collate, integrate and make available in a single environment all geo-referenced data and information available in Brazil and abroad on geology and mineral resources of the South Atlantic Ocean. The other two projects are for the research of cobalt-rich crust and polimetallic sulphides. These programme are developed with the participation of various segments of government agencies, research institutions and public enterprises. Marine scientific research and other activities from REMPLAC and PROAREA are carried out in partnership between the Geological Survey of Brazil, national research institutions from several Brazilian universities and the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation from the Brazilian Navy.

Over the past decade, sea-floor hydrothermal vent fields have been studied by many researchers because of their commercial potential of mineral resources and the origins of Earth’s life. Approximately 300 of these are reported as massive sulfide deposits near the mid-ocean ridge, most of which are located in the Atlantic and Pacific ridges. However, only fourteen deposits have been identified in the Indian mid-ocean ridges. The Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 12°S is composed of three segments with a slow full- spreading rate of 33-37 mm/yr. The hydrothermal activity at the slow-spreading center can be generated along the ridge axis attended by volcanism or along the tectonic features, such as oceanic core complexes (OCCs). OCC is an exposed mantle rocks composed of peridotite and ultramafic rocks uplifted through long-lived detachment fault processes which can also lead to extensive hydrothermal circulation near the slow-spreading center. Therefore, the identification of OCC’s properties will be an important indicator for finding the sea-floor hydrothermal vents. To study hydrothermal activity of the CIR, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) have conducted expeditions using R/V Onnuri over four years (2009-2011, 2017). High-resolution bathymetry and backscatter data was obtained during expeditions using multibeam echo system of EM120 in 2009-2011 and deep-tow side-scan sonar system of IMI-30, which has more higher resolution than EM120, in 2017. In this study, we use these high-quality data for constraining location and size of OCC. We also analyze the geophysical and morphotectonic characteristics of OCC gathering high-resolution bathymetric map and backscatter image.

Several potential marine mineral deposits of various types have been identified within the Norwegian EEZ. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has recently designed and built a new remotely operated vehicle (ROV) system for scientific investigations of the deep-ocean and seafloor. A program to locate and investigate the most interesting of the identified marine mineral deposits using the new ROV system is underway. The ROV has been designed for detailed survey and sampling tasks. Although initially built for a major marine archaeology project, the design is equally suited to locate and investigate marine mineral deposits. The ROV is equipped with a high precision multi-sensory package that consists of various high quality cameras and lighting systems (together with state-of-the-art video and photo mosaic systems), several sonar systems, magnetometer and various other sensors. The ROV is also equipped with a 7-function manipulator arm and an excavation system. Internal collection baskets are used to store material for retrieval to the surface. A closed-loop control dynamic positioning system is used for detailed positioning of the ROV. Position data and other information are stored in a digital data management system. The ROV will also be used together with a specially developed remotely operated tool (ROT). The size and shape of this benthic lander can be adjusted before it is carefully lowered to the seafloor. The ROV can be docked on a moving platform on the ROT, to do detailed scientific investigations. The ROT can also be equipped with a separate sensor and system package, including drilling, excavation and coring units. This paper will present the new remotely operated system and the planned projects in Norway.

Subsea mineral deposit exploration aboard the R/V Onnuri was performed along the northern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 17°S in December 2009 ~ January 2010 (09IR Leg01 and 09IR Leg02) and December 2010~ January 2011 (10IR Leg01, 10IR Leg02, and 10IR Leg03). Final goal of the expedition for the first Korean research cruise on mid ocean ridge system is to define seafloor massive sulfide ore bodies through searching the active hydrothermal vents nearby spreading centers as well as to elucidate the nature of spreading segments of the northern CIR area where no systematic survey have been operated before by mapping and sampling of volcanic rocks. The preliminary result of topographical interpretations of bathymetry clearly display ocean core complex between 10°S and 11°S. The ocean core complex is featured by topographic-high area with corrugated surface. Lineaments of corrugations of the ocean core complex are clearly perpendicular to abyssal hill direction which is triggered by symmetric-normal faults. Ocean core complex are favor for hydrothermal fluid path because of the long-lived faults. In further exploration, more detailed examination, including systematic CTD casting and tows, need to narrow down actual venting site around ocean core complex. Magnetic field survey is able to estimate the location of hydrothermal vents with the properties that high temperature of hydrothermal fluids over Curie-point can cause thermal demagnetization. In magnetization intensity map, most of low magnetization zones are located at the nodal point over the ridge axis and the ocean core complex.

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) was founded in 1969 when a group of scientific and technical societies organized an annual conference and exhibition dedicated to technologies used in the offshore oil, gas and mining industries. Currently, OTC is sponsored by 12 industry organizations and societies. These include: American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG); American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE); American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); ASME International Petroleum Technology Institute; Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Oceanic Society (IEEE-OES); Marine Technology Society (MTS); Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG); Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME); Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME); Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); and The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS). OTC also has two endorsing organizations, the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) and the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA), as well as 6 supporting organizations that include the American Petroleum Institute (API), the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMEST), the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC), the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA), and the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA). From its earliest years, the OTC has been held during the first week of May in Houston, TX, initially at the Albert Thomas Convention Center where OTC?69 drew 4200 attendees and 200 exhibitors. As the conference grew and became established as the world?s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection, the venue was changed to the Astrodomain Complex, with technical paper sessions and most exhibits taking place in the Astro Hall. The numbers of attendees and exhibitors varied somewhat over the years, primarily in accordance with the fortunes of the international oil and gas industry. At its height in the early 1980s, OTC registered attendance exceeded 100,000 with more than 2500 exhibitors forcing expansion into the Astro Arena and even the Astrodome.

Manganese nodules lay in vast areas of the deep sea floor. Ideal harvesting conditions for a manganese nodule field are dense nodule abundances of nodules between 20 and 60 mm diameter and a metal content as high as possible. With regard to the development of collector technology, the properties of the deep sea soil, in which the nodules are embedded and to which the nodules stick, are of major interest. The forces for loosening the nodules have to be provided by the collector. For this purpose water jets and/or mechanical devices can be employed. For the choice of the best collecting procedure, various criteria, such as collecting rate, energy consumption and the environmental impact on the eco system of the deep sea floor, have to be considered and weighted as to their importance. Nowadays, the concept of a mining system with a flexible transport hose and a self propelled collecting machine is increasingly accepted among the expert community. With regard to the trafficability of the deep sea soil with a self propelled mining machine, the mechanic properties of the soil and the morphology of the deep sea floor are of special importance. The manganese nodule fields, which are interesting with regard to their recoverability, are mostly in the areas of tectonic fracture zones, at which the morphology of the sea floor is formed by vulcanic activities. In these areas, deep sea mountains, pits and other obstacles exist that have to be driven around if not trafficable.

"REVIEW OF ISA's DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS – HAVE KEY STAKEHOLDERS' CONCERNS BEEN ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY?In early August 2017, the ISA published a revised draft of the exploitation regulations. My presentation will focus on the extent to which key State and Contractor issues raised in formal submissions in November 2016 have been addressed in the revised draft and any additional key issues in the revised draft which are likely to cause significant concern for Contractors.ABSTRACTFollowing the ISA's call for submissions in response to draft zero of the exploitation regulations in July 2016, 43 responses from stakeholders were received by the ISA in November 2016. My presentation will start by briefly looking at how the ISA has continued to engage with stakeholders following the publication of draft zero of the exploitation regulations, including at payment regime workshops in London (November 2016) and Singapore (April 2017) and at the environmental workshop held in Berlin in March 2017. It will also touch on the publication in February 2017 of what was in effect a very preliminary draft of the environmental regulations before moving on to consider in detail the extent to which key State and Contractor issues have been addressed in the ISA revised draft exploitation regulations which were published in August 2017. My review of the formal submissions will include, amongst other things, commentary on:(i) the level of Stakeholder response (State Parties to UNCLOS, Sponsoring States, Privately owned Contractors, State Owned Contractors and NGOs);(ii) the quality of the submissions (particularly by States and Contractors); (iii) the key concerns raised by State and Contractor stakeholders and how those issues have been addressed in the revised draft exploitation regulations; and(iv) how all stakeholders need to further engage with the ISA to ensure that the exploitation code adequately addresses the legitimate and reasonable concerns of each Stakeholder group (e.g. Contractors, Sponsoring States, Developing States and NGOs)."

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Near-seafloor high-resolution mapping and photographic transects, associated with finer-spaced box-core sampling could constitute a next step to better constrain the mineable areas and to get a higher level of confidence in the resource estimation.

Dredging tends to be either horizontal or vertical. In each case solids have to be disengaged from the deposit, mobilized, acquired and elevated or translated. One means of elevation is the airlift. Elevation and translation of essentially granular material nay be by jet pump or centrifugal pump. Any of the three types may be used on its own. The airlift and jet pump may he combined for vertical transport and the centrifugal and jet pumps for predominantly horizontal. Both suction point and pipework must have a means of deployment from the surface or from a submerged vehicle or merely a diver. An airlift is an energetic system, having a source of energy and a means of storing it. It therefore will be difficult to prevent oscillation -surging. A centrifugal pump has a characteristic that bends over at low flow rate and is therefore intrinsically unsuitable for pumping solids. The result is blockage, operation at high velocity and correspondingly high wear rates or operation at low concentration of solids and correspondingly low efficiency. The jet pump is intrinsically exceptionally stable but has a low hydraulic efficiency. The jet pump-airlift hybrid prevents or reduces surging and increases system efficiency away from the optimum depth for airlift operation. Delivered solids concentration is increased. The jet pump-centrifugal pump hybrid totally prevents pipeline blockages and increases the productivity from a given pipeline size. For a given energy input the average production is typically doubled. For example, the Indian River Delaware bypassing pipeline transmits an overall day-in-day-out average of 500t/h (tonnes) of sand down a 10.86" diameter line.

The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator&apos;s product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

From an interesting and intriguing scientific research topic, deep sea mining has altered into an interesting mining prospect over the last years. Ten years ago most of the focus was on geological investigations, searching for typical deep sea deposits and getting answers on where we can find them and how these deposits were formed. At this moment we know much more about the interesting deposit possibilities and with our quest for minerals, metals and other materials to feed global economic growth, answers as to the technical and economic feasibility to mine these deposits are sought. This is not a new phenomenon as we already witnessed such question late 1970?s and early 1980?s. Most of the focus was on mining manganese nodules and brines in the Red Sea driven by the report of the Club of Rome that predicted shortages in near future at that time. Development went different, but later in the 1990?s a rival of interest could be noticed for mining deep sea deposits.

While there is no immediate worldwide shortage of hard minerals, the consumption of natural resources is constantly increasing, and there are ominous predictions of shortages to come. Means of meeting rapidly increasing demands are being implemented. These include such methods as exploration and discovery of new ore bodies, development of new mines, increasing production at existing mines, working or reopening known deposits of lower grade ore and tailings, recycling old materials, and developing more efficient and less wasteful processes to convert ores and metals into useful products. The United States, although itself mineral-rich, depends in large measure on imports for many key minerals and basic materials derived therefrom. According to the Department of the Interior, the U. S. depends upon imports for more than half of its supply of six of the basic thirteen raw materials required by any industrialized society - aluminum, chromium, manganese, nickel, tin, and zinc. By 1985 the country will also depend upon imports for more than half of its iron and tungsten, and by the year 2000 imports will have to supply more than half of the copper, potassium, and sulfur that it requires.
