Several metallogenic zones including Sakmara, Magnitogorsk, and East-Ural zones were revealed in the Ural fold belt (Fig. 1). These zones are considered to be the paleogeodinamic sectors corresponding to marginal sea, island arc system, and uplift respectively. Ferruginous-manganiferous sediments in the Southern Urals are hosted by the basalt-rich volcano-sedimentary series of the Magnitogorsk paleoisland arc system with West- and East Magnitogorsk island arcs and Sibai inter-arc basin. The manganiferous mineralization occurs in association with the Middle Devonian stratabound hematite-quartz rocks and bedded red jaspers localized on the foot or handing walls of massive sulfide deposits. Fe-Mn nodules are widespread in jasper horizons on the flanks of manganese deposits. We have studied Fe-Mn nodules from the Faizulino and Yanzigitovo Mn-deposits formed in the Sibai inter-arc basin and compared them with well known Fe-Mn nodules from modern oceans.

Sedimento II oceanographic cruise, on board of the B/O El Puma, shows a new high anomaly or phosphate associated with shelf sediments from the south Mexican Pacific. Recently, were found two anomalies in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, that are located to the east of this new anomaly, that is related to muddy sands and rock fragment debris. The latter shows values of 17% P205. The phosphate occurrence is probably associated with red tides locations that usually are found in sites where sediments are phosphates enriched. These findings suggest that south Mexican Pacific is of potential interest for P205, in waters with high nutrients values. The possibility of a more regional occurrence of phosphate, from California to Chile is suggested.

Marine benthic habitats are vulnerable to the influence of a wide range of anthropogenic activities (e.g. sand and gravel extraction, dredged material disposal and trawling). Traditionally, benthic ecologists have relied on point sampling techniques such as grabs, corers and dredges to provide information on the physical nature of the substrates and their associated benthic fauna. However, information of this nature only relates to the specific point on the seabed from which the sample was collected and the interpolation of such data to predict the wider distribution of substrata and associated fauna may be unreliable. Our approach uses a range of acoustic, photographic and physical sampling methodologies to produce continuous acoustic coverage maps which can be used to assist with the interpretation of faunal distributions. This approach has been used to assess the impacts of marine sand and gravel extraction at the seabed at two sites off the east coast of England in the southern North Sea. The first study site (designated ?Area 222?) is located 20km off the southeast coast of England and was surveyed in 2001 using sidescan sonar, single beam bathymetry, seabed photography and also a 0.1m2 Hamon grab for the collection of benthos and sediment samples. The main objectives of this investigation were to provide an indication of the spatial distribution of the sediments and macrofauna in the wider area encompassing the dredged site, to evaluate the scope for the effects of marine sand and gravel extraction to extend beyond the boundaries of the site and to provide a wider geographical context for time series investigations. At this site, an acoustic basemap was utilised in conjunction with faunal sampling and photographic groundtruthing, to determine the nature and distribution of the seabed sediments and their associated features. Disturbances at the seabed arising from historic sand and gravel extraction activities were mapped, and this information was helpful in establishing biological cause and effect relationships. The acoustic basemap was also used to target biological reference sites against which the effects of adjacent man-made disturbances could be evaluated.

Annual metal consumption per capita has increased several orders of magnitude worldwide since the turn of the 19th century, yet grades of terrestrial ores are decreasing as reserves dwindle. Consequently, deep sea metal deposits are gradually transitioning from identified resources to economically viable reserves. Deposits in the Red Sea deeps along the axial trough result from tectonic and local hydrothermal processes. Continental rifting and ocean floor spreading produce fresh oceanic crust; concurrently, seafloor evaporites flow into the spreading zone and form isolated deeps. The deeps are often filled with hot stratified brines maintained by locally discharged fluids during hydrothermal circulation. Metalliferous sediments precipitate from the brines within the deeps. The ongoing multipronged study at KAUST involves: (1) acoustic characterization of the metalliferous accumulations using advanced signal processing techniques that capture the physics of granular materials; (2) comprehensive mineralogical and textural characterization of sampled sediments using SEM, EDS, XRD, XRF, and ICP-OES; (3) multiphysics instruments deployed to measure undisturbed sediment properties in-situ; (4) development of a distributed seafloor observatory for monitoring field operations; (5) innovative concentration and separation technologies; and (6) new strategies for proper tailings disposal purposely conceived for the unique field conditions in the Red Sea deeps.

Low- to intermediate-temperature, diffuse-flow hydrothermal fields and associated mineral precipitates have been found at many locations along oceanic spreading centers, back-arc basin spreading axes, and midplate hot-spots. However, this type of hydrothermal field has not been found in oceanic fracture zones until recently. We mapped and collected samples from an active hydrothermal field in the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ) located in the northeast Pacific. The BFZ connects the Gorda and Juan de Fuca spreading centers and is divided into east and west segments by Cascadia Depression, a small spreading center. Small pull-apart basins occur along both the east and west segments. A complex set of basins near the western end of the BFZ includes from east to west, Surveyor Depression, East Blanco Depression (EBD), and West Blanco Depression. The hydrothermal field described here is located in the EBD.

Numerous hydrothermal vents occur along the Earth?s oceanic spreading axes documenting the reaction of seawater with hot magmatic rocks. The circulation of seawater through the oceanic crust, the interaction with hot rocks in the crust, and the subsequent discharge of hot metal- and gas-rich fluids into the ocean have significant implications for the cycling of material and energy on Earth. Until recently, hydrothermal activity was unknown from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) south of the Equator where the MAR is offset by about 1000 km at the St. Paul?s and Romanche fracture zones. During a British cruise in February/March 2005, the first active hydrothermal vent field was discovered on the southern MAR at 5°S. During our follow-up cruise M64/1 in April 2005, the first samples from this vent field were recovered with the ROV QUEST (Univ. Bremen) and analyzed onboard. The high-temperature vent field is situated in a water depth of 2990 m along a line of collapse pits within a large basaltic sheet flow. A diffuse, low-temperature field occurs in a jumbled sheet flow few hundred meters to the east with warm water streaming out of cavities between lava blocks. Here we show for the first time that boiling fluids of ~400°C are emanating from sulfide-bearing vents at a depth of about 3000 m at a slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge segment. Although this segment is composed of thick basaltic crust, these fluids are dominated by hydrogen relative to methane. Whereas the active chimneys consist of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and isocubanite, the mineral association hematite-magnetite-pyrite occurs in the inactive chimneys suggesting that the fluids became more reducing in present times. The high hydrogen contents and the high temperature of the fluids as well as the change to more reducing conditions are most likely related to a young volcanic eruption event some 300 m east of the hydrothermal field. The presence of hematite and magnetite may indicate that the upflow zone or even the reaction zone at 5°S used to be more oxidized then at other MOR sites, where the hydrothermal fluids are commonly buffered by the pyrite-pyrrhotite-magnetite (PPM) buffer. Consequently, high iron contents and high hydrogen/methane ratios occur in high temperature fluids from basaltic host rocks rather than being restricted to ultramafic host rocks. Faunal communities at the South Atlantic vents largely resemble those from the North Atlantic vents implying that the large Equatorial fracture zones do not inhibit or obstruct faunal exchange along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Ferromanganese crusts on the seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are potential resources of cobalt, nickel, platinum and REEs. Particularly, those of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) waters are believed to be of the highest resources potential area in the Pacific Ocean. The total six cruises using the Japanese Research Vessel Hakurei Maru No. 2 were carried out in the seamounts of the Marshall Islands in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and of the FSM in the 1997, 1998 and 2005 for evaluation of economic potential for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts as part of the Japan-SOPAC joint project. During these cruises numerous data such as bathymetric, geological, geophysical and environmental data were obtained. Geophysical exploration with backscatter mapping and side scan sonar, visual imaging using towed TV camera and geological sampling using dredge bucket and/or benthic multi-coring system (BMS) were conducted on these seamounts. In this presentation, we will report the mode of distribution of the crusts and calculated resource estimation based on the results of these geological and geophysical shipboard survey and land-based analyses. The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

Internal textures of manganese nodules from Clarion-Clipperton zone of northeastern Pacific Ocean are classified into five textural zones: columnar-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured massive zone, cuspate-textured porous zone and massive- textured massive zone. Vernadite is the main constituent mineral in the columnar- and cuspate-textured layered zone. Buserite sometimes occurs in the cuspate-textured layered zone. The cuspate-textured massive zone is mainly composed of buserite. Todorokite is also associated with buserite in the massive-textured porous zone, where cuspates and globes are partially replaced by massive texture. In the massive-textured massive zone, todorokite, buserite and birnessite occur together. The analyzed elements of all zones are also classified into four elemental groups by the cluster analysis of correlation coefficients: Mn group, Cu-Ni-Mg group, Fe group and Si group. Mn group consists of Mn and K. Cu-Ni-Mg group consists of Cu, Ni, Zn, Mg and/or Ca, Na. Fe group consists of Fe, Co, Ti and/or Ca, P. Si group consists of Si and Al. Each textural zone is composed of three or four elemental groups. These four elemental groups are correlated with mineral composition, such as, Mn group with todorokite, Cu-Ni-Mg group with buserite, Fe group with Co-bearing iron-oxyhydroxide minerals, and Si group with silicates.

To effectively manage the potential environmental impacts of deep-sea mining of manganese nodules, we need to know substantially more about the effects of sediment redeposition on abyssal communities and the time scales of recovery from such effects. As an initial step towards a predictive understanding of mining impacts on abyssal benthos, we are conducting a series of biological studies within the framework of the Benthic Impact Experiment (BIE). Mining operations will cause resuspension of sediments across extensive areas of the abyssal Pacific Ocean. The resultant plumes likely will produce redeposition layers, ranging from a few sediment grains in thickness to > 1 cm, over thousands of square kilometers of the seafloor. The impact of such redeposition on abyssal benthic communities is exceedingly difficult to predict. While there has been speculation that redeposition of 1 mm or less will exert deleterious effects, there has been very little testing, and the BIE will provide the first in situ test of redeposition impacts. In a series of cruises before and after controlled resedimentation, we are collecting biological samples to determine the undisturbed state of the ecosystem, the immediate effects of disturbance, and the time-course of recovery resulting from quantified levels of resedimentation.

The world-class Neves-Corvo deposits were intersected by drilling in 1977. They occur in the (Carboniferous) Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), Western Europe&apos;s largest stock of base metals (see Bamga, 1990, in Dallmeyer RD, & Martinez E, eds, Pre-Mesozoic Geology of Iberia, Springer-Verlag). Massive and stringer sulfides in the area sum up to about 200 Mt (109 kg), in five main orebodies (Neves, Corvo, Graca, Zambujal and Lombador). They include unique, extremely high grade copper and tin ores ( - 33 Mt Cu ores, -7.5% Cu, and -4 Mt Sn ores, -2.6% Sn, - 12.5% Cu). Also present are -50 Mt polimetallic ores (-6% Zn, 1.2% Pb, 64 ppm Ag). The remaining are relatively low grade pyritic massive and stringer sulfides (Cu < 2%. Sn < 1%, Zn equivalent < 4%). The geological setting is one of bymodal submarine volcanism, with predominant felsic, explosive volcanism and associated sedimentation (detrital and chemical), which took place on a shelf-facies, quartzite-phyllite basement (of Upper Devonian age). The plate tectonic setting has been the object of much debate. Current interpretations favour that the IPB volcanism took place in a tensional fore-arc region, associated with oblique subduction and collision (Silva et al., 1990, same volume as above). At Neves-Corvo there are many different ores, that may be grouped in four main types: fissural (at the base), breccia, massive (intermediate) and "ruban6 " (at the top). Fissural ores seem to correspond to stockworks in contrasting types of host rocks (gray to black shale, sericitic, chloritic and graphitic, and light gray volcanic rock). Massive ore may contain significant shaly gangue, at the base of individual orebodies, and silica-rich (cherty) varieties towards the top. The more sulfide-rich varieties predominate, and are usually well banded.

In its first three years of operations, the in-house programs of the continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC/CSD) have focused on the development of drill systems - technology and the improvement of techniques and applications of reconnaissance methods to marine mineral deposit characterization. Many of the technological advances made to date have been in direct response to specific requests from industry for drill systems needs, and from federal and state agencies seeking technical support for various research efforts. These cooperative programs have proven to be an extremely efficient and effective way for the MMTC to achieve some of the main program goals that were established for the organization at the outset: primarily, to encourage and assist U.S. industry in marine minerals research activities and to encourage cooperative work among research institutions, government agencies, and industry. The Kyzyl-Tashtyg massive sulfide polymetallic deposit is situated 120 km north-east of Kyzyl (the capital of Tuva Republic, Russia). It is located in the Ulug-O volcanic zone which is interpreted as the northern segment of the Kaa-Khem rift in Sayano-Tuva marginal sea, one of the Paleoasian Ocean margin (Fig. 1) [Zaykov, 2006]. Since its discovery in 1946 the deposit has been studied by many researchers. Significant information was published by Kuzebny et al. [2001] and Zaykov [2006] who proposed volcanogenic-sedimentary genesis. A single reference in English about Kyzyl-Tashtyg is available [Herrington et al., 1999].

"REVIEW OF ISA's DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS – HAVE KEY STAKEHOLDERS' CONCERNS BEEN ADDRESSED ADEQUATELY?In early August 2017, the ISA published a revised draft of the exploitation regulations. My presentation will focus on the extent to which key State and Contractor issues raised in formal submissions in November 2016 have been addressed in the revised draft and any additional key issues in the revised draft which are likely to cause significant concern for Contractors.ABSTRACTFollowing the ISA's call for submissions in response to draft zero of the exploitation regulations in July 2016, 43 responses from stakeholders were received by the ISA in November 2016. My presentation will start by briefly looking at how the ISA has continued to engage with stakeholders following the publication of draft zero of the exploitation regulations, including at payment regime workshops in London (November 2016) and Singapore (April 2017) and at the environmental workshop held in Berlin in March 2017. It will also touch on the publication in February 2017 of what was in effect a very preliminary draft of the environmental regulations before moving on to consider in detail the extent to which key State and Contractor issues have been addressed in the ISA revised draft exploitation regulations which were published in August 2017. My review of the formal submissions will include, amongst other things, commentary on:(i) the level of Stakeholder response (State Parties to UNCLOS, Sponsoring States, Privately owned Contractors, State Owned Contractors and NGOs);(ii) the quality of the submissions (particularly by States and Contractors); (iii) the key concerns raised by State and Contractor stakeholders and how those issues have been addressed in the revised draft exploitation regulations; and(iv) how all stakeholders need to further engage with the ISA to ensure that the exploitation code adequately addresses the legitimate and reasonable concerns of each Stakeholder group (e.g. Contractors, Sponsoring States, Developing States and NGOs)."

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. Mode of occurrence and compositional variations of iron-manganese deposits from seamounts around the NW Pacific submarine island-arc area are described on the basis of on-site description during the Moana Wave Cruise MW9507 and other Japanese cruises, as well as geochemical and mineralogical analyses and dating on collected samples. Hydrogenetic and hydrothermal iron-manganese crusts occur at more than 80 sites out of 150 dredge hauls within a small area of 200x 200 km in the back arc region. The hydrogenetic crusts may have grown continuously at slow rates, but 2-3 times faster than those from the Central Pacific, associated with depletion of Co, Cu, and Ni contents. The site-maximum thickness of the hydrogenetic deposits trends to increase with the increase of distance from the active volcanic chain or the age of substrate volcanic rocks. Also the observed great local variations in thickness within single sites and on small scales may be resulted from post-depositional geological activity at the seamounts such as calcareous sedimentation, collapse of volcanic body and mass wasting,. On the other hand, the rapid hydrothermal manganese mineralization has occurred in place and time during arc volcanism and rifting and is still in progress at modern active areas. The ninety ICP/ES chemical plus XRD analysis show that these deposits are of distinct composition by origin or topographic provinces, but small-scale variation of the deposits of each origin and micro-scale depth variation are not clear.

Occurrence of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts has been well documented over inactive seamounts in the central and southern Pacific Ocean. It has been thus believed that the hydrogenetic crusts develop preferentially at water depths between about 800 to 2500 meters. In fact, according to the Manganese Crust Database (F. Manheim, 1988), only two occurrences are known at water depths below 5000 m out of 819 occurrences cited in the database. Unexpectedly, we found typical hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts from deep-sea floors; 1) outcropping old volcanic basement over the Philippine Sea Plate (abandoned spreading centers and subducting old oceanic crusts) and 2) one from the slope of an abyssal hill in the Central Pacific Basin (Cretaceous deep-sea basin) at water depths ranging between 5200 to 6100 meters. We report their occurrences with submersible observations from Shinkai 6K, physical parameters (such as thickness of crusts about 2-4 cm in maximum), chemical composition, petrology of substrate, and results of Be-10 dating for some samples in comparison with typical Co-rich manganese crusts from the Central Pacific seamounts. The preliminary chemical and mineralogical analyses reveal that they are of typical hydrogenetic origin, and typical of iron-manganese oxide mineral, vernadite, slow and probably continuous growth, and lower content of Co than the Central Pacific seamount crusts. The occurrences and nature of the crusts indicate that deep-sea floors are also optimal for the growth of hydrogenetic crust even at 5000 m water depth or deeper, only if oxygenated deep waters are supplied and the sea-floor morphology keeps stable enough for significant geological time period. The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel&apos;s levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.
