A chemical and geological study of beach samples from the Mexican North Pacific was undertaken in order to evaluate the chemical composition of the beach sediments and it s association to lithology, climate, topography and weathering. The North Pacific Mexican littoral is characterized by arid weather with wide coastal plains and three geological provinces. The sands from the area are mainly finer, well sorted and show high maturity because of the high wave regime and the high energy conditions produced by the California Current in the coastline. The provenance index reflects that the region has a source of deep seated rocks, now exposed and dissected. Factor analysis made using the chemical composition showed the samples can be differentiated by five factors: 1) SiO2, 2) Al2O3; 3) Cu; 4) Sr and P2O2 and 5) Na content. Samples located in the northof the study area showed the highest values of Fe2O3 (17.72%), TiO2 (2.43%), V (576 ppm) and Zn (141 ppm) associated to methamorphic rocks present in the area.

After the simulated ‘mining’ experiment (INDEX) in the Central Indian Ocean (in 1997); the restoration of benthic environment was monitored for 4 years (2001-2005) at 5 locations in and around the test site and at 3 reference stations (20-80 km) from the test site. A comparison of long-term monitoring data with the pre-mining and post mining observations has shown that: • The concentration of silt fraction which was the highest (50-60%) at most locations during ‘pre-mining’ and ‘post-mining’ phases, had reduced (40-50%) during monitoring phases. • There was a corresponding increase in clay concentration (50-60%) during the monitoring phase, implying change in the size of sediment particles settling on the seabed, a trend that was also observed at the reference locations. • The initial increase in water content and decrease in shear strength after the experiment, which appeared to be returning to normal in monitoring-1 (2001), was reversed during subsequent monitoring phases (2002-2005), indicating changes in benthic environmental conditions. • Sediment organic matter and pore-water chemical data have not only indicated partial restoration of geochemical properties after the experiment, but also cyclic changes during the monitoring period.

The XRF Core-Scanner system performs non-destructive analysis of elements from Mg to U, in concentrations of ppm levels on split cores with digital images. Using the AVAATECH XRF Corescanner system, we conducted high resolution element analysis of deep sea sediment cores from Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone of the northeastern Pacific to reveal recent environmental changes. Comparison of data estimated by the XRF core scanner with ICP-AES showed relatively weak correlation coefficients except Mn contents. Down-core variations of most elements seem to be matched with each other and reflect changes of sediment colors. Especially Mn/Al ratio significantly change at distinct color boundaries. The variations of Mn/Al ratio with sediment colors are suggestive of changes in redox condition and further divided into two types probably affected by activities of benthic organisms. Be isotope age datings of select core (BC08-02-13) indicate that the color boundaries are approximately coincident with late Pliocene and Pleostocene also early Pliocene and late Pliocene boundary. The U. S. Bureau of Mines participated in a two-year joint State of Oregon/Department of Interior Placer Task Force study on the economic and environmental aspects of Oregon's marine placer deposits. The effort culminated in a research cruise off the southwest coast of Oregon to investigate the geological and biological characteristics of the continental shelf deposits. The Bureau's role was to collect and study the placer material off the continental shelf and to determine its strategic potential and significance. In-depth characterization of the sediments by optical and electron microscopy verify that the placer material from Cape Blanco contains up to 3 pct ilmenite, 0.5 pct chromite, and small amounts of zircon and gold. However, harsh sea conditions and equipment failures prevented sampling below a four-foot depth at the Cape Blanco site. Results to date indicate that the deposits sampled off the southwest coast of Oregon do not represent a significant source of strategic minerals. However, further study of the deeper sediments off Cape Blanco may uncover significant concentrations of chromite. This presentation encompasses the site geology, the geophysical and biological activities of the expedition, and the results of the Bureau's mineralogical and chemical investigation. The combined findings of the Bureau and other Task Force agencies have provided information needed to expand the country's limited knowledge of marine mineral resources and has assisted state and federal agencies in the formulation of offshore mineral policies.

Numerous studies have examined the distribution of deep-sea manganese deposits throughout geologic history. Here I summarize the recent results, focusing on the frequency of occurrence, burial age and mechanism, and the paleoceanographic implications.

The mineralogy and geochemistry of hydrothermally altered wall rocks from different modern basaltic- and felsic-hosted hydrothermal fields at seafloor spreading centers and convergent margins have been studied to determine the characteristics of different types of alteration and to calculate the magnitudes of elemental exchanges between seawater and wall rock.
