With the exponential growth of demand for minerals and need for diversification of supply channels, deep-sea mining is rapidly becoming inevitable. Productivity of underwater mining technology is salient to justify the deep-sea explorations. Methods for enhanced productivity of mobile mining equipment in a system level are investigated in this paper. Lessons learnt from the land-based mining has been the basis of this investigation. In general, mining productivity can be enhanced in two ways; firstly, by maximizing the amount of recovered material per unit time and secondly, by minimizing the cost of operation per unit material. Equipment that enable faster excavation, loading and transport in the seabed contributes significantly in increasing the amount of slurry per unit time. Improved mean time between failures (MTBF) of mining equipment will reduce the operational down time, thereby, contribute to maximize the amount of mined material per unit time. Several factors influence the operational cost minimization per ton of slurry. Higher efficient motor drive systems including the motor and PWM-fed inverter not only will save power but also will emit lesser heat thus the heat management can be less complex. This leads to more compact drive systems that allows higher power density, thus increased payload weight per empty vehicle weight. An energy storage method in the form of an utracapacitor in the electric drive system will also save the energy supply from the upstream.

The presentation describes new data concerning the age of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal fields. The collection of massive sulfides recovered from six hydrothermal fields has been dated using the 230Th/U method. The range of the data obtained is rather wide: from 2.2 up to 65.1 thousand years BP. Three stages of hydrothermal activity were detected for this 65 Kyr period of geological evolution: modern (0 -5), 20-25 and 58–65 thousand BP (Figure 1). This conclusion was confirmed by dating the associated metalliferous sediment layers which also indicate the hydrothermal events led to the formation of sulfide mineralization. There is a correlation between the age and size of massive sulfide deposits: older deposits are larger (Table 1). This and other applications of obtained data will be discussed in presentation.

A pilot mining robot, named MineRo-II, has been developed by KIOST during 2011-2012. The pilot scale was defined as 1/5 of the commercial mining capacity, 1.5 million dry-tons of nodules per year. The development purpose of MineRo-II is to use for the pilot mining test planned in 2015. MineRo-II was designed to be self-propelled by electric-hydraulic power and remotely operated in real-time from aboard. The main operational functions are crawling on seafloor, pick-up and crushing of nodules, discharging nodules out to buffer. Prior to MineRo-II, a test miner (MineRo-I) was developed in scale of 1/20th in 2007, and performed two times sea trials in 2009 and 2010. The results of performance tests were evaluated and utilized for the concept of MineRo-II. The design concept aimed at the expandability of the mining capacity based on modularity of configuration, maintenance simplicity and multiplicity of backup solution. The pilot-scale mining capacity is achieved by four pick-up modules of each 1m wide, which are moving forward with robot vehicle and sweep the nodules entering below the pick-up heads. Principally, by adding the pickup modules in lateral dimension the mining capacity may increase linearly. MineRo-II was designed and constructed in unit-module wise. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical and hydraulic configuration. With the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development fast approaching it is timely to reflect on the integral role seafloor polymetallic nodule mining will play in facilitating sustainable development and alleviating global poverty. Polymetallic nodule mining presents mankind with a unique opportunity to advance the world?s sustainable development aspirations, particularly given the ultimate beneficiaries from polymetallic nodule mining will be the billions of people around the world that require greater access to more affordable minerals for their social and economic development. This paper discusses the importance of polymetallic nodule mining in the context of sustainable development and forecasted growth trends, supply and demand dynamics, the decreasing grade and quality of terrestrial mineral resources, and the Green Economy, as well as in light of a comparative analysis that demonstrates polymetallic nodule mining offers a socially and environmentally advantageous alternative to terrestrial mining.

On 13 July 2000, the ISA adopted the Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Polymetallic Nodules in the Area. The first contracts for such exploration were issued by the ISA the same year. The duration of exploration contracts is 15 years, after which the contractors are expected to go into exploitation. In 2013, ISA with the LTC initiated the process for developing the regulations for exploitation, and are currently working on the first draft to put forward for the Council. In the meantime, the first seven exploration contracts have expired, and been given five years extensions in order for the contractors to get ready to apply for exploitation contracts. According to the current draft of the exploitation regulations, an application for an exploitation contract shall be accompanied by all data acquired during the exploration phase, a mining plan, a financing plan, and a set of environmental plans (i.e. an environmental impact statement, an emergency response and contingency plan, environmental management and monitoring plan, and a closure plan). All of these plans have to be based on substantial scientific and technical data and information. The mining plan requires geoscientific data regarding the mineralogy and grade of the nodules, and the physiography of the mining site as a basis for the consideration of critical aspects, inter alia for making reliable resource estimations, design the mining operations, and forecast revenues. The environmental plans require the input of a substantial set of bioscientific data and information on the exploitation technology in order to establish base-lines, and monitor and evaluate the effects of the mining operations. Under the exploration contracts, such scientific data have been acquired and reported on an annual basis to the ISA. Some testing of mining equipment and experiments on the extraction of metals have also been performed by some contractors. These scientific and technical data from the exploration phase will be the basis for the for the preparation of the studies, plans and documents required for the applications for exploitation. No time frame is specified for the preparations of an application but it must be assumed to take place before the expiration of the exploration contract.

In the last two years, C-CORE has developed a new seabed sampler directed specifically at obtaining samples from hard or compacted bottoms such as are typical of marine placer deposits. Samples are required for appraisal of concentrations of saleable commodities, and for determination of levels of biological indicators in the deposits. Recently C-CORE and the University of Victoria have been comparing the performance of the Scott/C-CORE sampler with that of the Van Veen sampler often used for biological sampling. Initial trials of the Scott/C-CORE sampler in 1992 at the WestGold mining site, Nome, Alaska, were described by Jewitt et al. at the 1993 UMI. Since that time the sampler has been modified to prevent overfilling, and to limit turbulent flow of water across the top of the sampler buckets when the sampler is recovered with partly-open buckets. The modifications included shoes to prevent sampler overfill, and flexible rubber shielding over top and sides of the sampler to prevent water circulation. Samples have been taken with both samplers in two field areas, one at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland, and the other near Long Pond in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland. In each area multiple samples were taken with both sampler types, and the samples processed immediately to establish the types and quantities of marine organisms that were present. Species identification is expected to be complete by late August.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

Recent technological breakthroughs in the fields of ceramics, medicine, aerospace engineering and electronics (semi- and superconductors) are constantly creating new uses and an ongoing increasing demand for a variety of rare valuable trace metals. These so-called high-tech elements such as hafnium (Hf), titanium (Ti,) niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), zirconium (Zr), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE), many of them of strategic importance, occur inter alia at elevated and potentially economic concentrations in marine ferromanganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts, making those deep sea deposits potential future resources of these metals. As these metals are mostly present in the lattice of the manganese and iron phases, which are strongly intergrown, rather than in separate mineral phases within the nodules and crusts (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), reductive dissolution of the host phases is a prerequisite to release and dissolve the valuable metals. To evaluate the association of these rare valuable metals with their mineral carrier phases, sequential leaching experiments were carried out on selected samples in a first step in our project.

The reconstruction of ocean history has been a major focus of marine research over the past decade. A significant outcome of these investigations is the recognition that certain types of marine mineral deposits are linked to regional to global scale changes in ocean composition and climate conditions. Manganese-bearing deposits are of particular interest in this regard because changes in their occurrence, distribution and/or composition are responsive to both biochemical and geological factors. Analyses of such deposits whose formation spans critical age/epoch boundaries thus provide clues concerning the interplay of different process during anomalous periods in Earth history. Recent studies demonstrating this deposit - event - process relationship include: (1) Changes in the bulk chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts during the Late Miocene-Early-Pliocene (-7-3 Ma) that coincide with a period of enhanced biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific upwelling zone; (2) The formation of large statiform manganese deposits at the Cenornanian- Turonian Boundary (-92 Ma) in association with widespread oceanic anoxia; and (3) Increased deposition of hydrothermal precipitates caused by tectonic reorganizations at the Paleocene - Eocene boundary (-55 Ma) that resulted in global-scale changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and climate.

Subsea mineral deposit exploration aboard the R/V Onnuri was performed along the northern Central Indian Ridge (CIR) between 8°S and 17°S in December 2009 ~ January 2010 (09IR Leg01 and 09IR Leg02) and December 2010~ January 2011 (10IR Leg01, 10IR Leg02, and 10IR Leg03). Final goal of the expedition for the first Korean research cruise on mid ocean ridge system is to define seafloor massive sulfide ore bodies through searching the active hydrothermal vents nearby spreading centers as well as to elucidate the nature of spreading segments of the northern CIR area where no systematic survey have been operated before by mapping and sampling of volcanic rocks. The preliminary result of topographical interpretations of bathymetry clearly display ocean core complex between 10°S and 11°S. The ocean core complex is featured by topographic-high area with corrugated surface. Lineaments of corrugations of the ocean core complex are clearly perpendicular to abyssal hill direction which is triggered by symmetric-normal faults. Ocean core complex are favor for hydrothermal fluid path because of the long-lived faults. In further exploration, more detailed examination, including systematic CTD casting and tows, need to narrow down actual venting site around ocean core complex. Magnetic field survey is able to estimate the location of hydrothermal vents with the properties that high temperature of hydrothermal fluids over Curie-point can cause thermal demagnetization. In magnetization intensity map, most of low magnetization zones are located at the nodal point over the ridge axis and the ocean core complex.

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

Deep sea mining operations by nature are performed (or planned) in challenging environments. Another typifying characteristic of deep sea mining operations is the relatively high investment cost. This combination challenges engineers to design configurations able to mine the desired production rate in an efficient way. As design choices made for individual systems impact other parts of the system, it is vital to follow an integral approach to establish the one optimal overall system. Dredging and especially dredge mining learns that the excavation system, the slurry transportation system and the processing plant cannot be considered as individual sub-systems. These systems in any ?traditional dredge mining? operation interrelate to such extend that they must be developed towards an integral solution. The nominal production, peak production and variability of these figures must match for all subsystems in the overall mining system to optimize the mining efficiency. We call this the ?game of capacities?.

The release of methane as free gas from the seafloor into the water-column well within the hydrate stability field is a natural process observed today in various ocean settings, such as the Cascadia margin, the Black Sea, the Guayamas Basin, and the Gulf of Mexico. The subsequent dissolution of gas bubbles into the water-column determines the vertical distribution of aqueous methane in the water-column and the upwards methane flux. Understanding this process not only is essential to describing the impact of natural deep-sea gas seepage, but also to assessing the hazard potential from blowouts and offshore exploitation activities, which are steadily expanding to greater ocean depths. Furthermore, the fate of methane from seeps contributes to scenarios of global change in the past and future involving the large scale destabilization of gas hydrates on a. We recently reported on the extended lifetime of methane bubbles within the hydrate stability field due to the formation of a hydrate skin (Rehder et al., 2002), based on in situ measurements of methane and argon bubble dissolution in the depth range 400 to 800 m. More recently, these observations were extended to depths from 900 to 1500 m. Single bubbles were injected from the ROV Ventana into an attached, back-illuminated, flow-through imaging box. The ascent of individual bubbles within the imaging box was recorded with Ventana?s HDTV camera system by piloting the 3-ton ROV upward, at the bubble rise velocity, for up to 400 m of vertical transit. Observed rise velocities were approximately 30cm/sec for all depths. Post-dive analysis of the HDTV video allowed detailed measurements of the bubble shrinking rates. The results of the earlier and new experiments lead to the following conclusions: (A) Methane bubbles released below the hydrate stability field showed markedly enhanced lifetimes, attributed to hydrate skin formation. The change in radius with time, dr/dt, varied from -7.5 micrometer/s above the hydrate stability field to about -1 micrometer/s at the deepest release depth. (B) Bubble lifetime within the hydrate stability field increased with distance in P-T space from the hydrate phase boundary. (C) Before hydrate skin nucleation, dr/dt for CH4 bubbles was comparable to dr/dt above the hydrate stability field. Although variable, the onset time for the hydrate skin effect to occur generally decreased with distance from the hydrate phase boundary (super-pressurization and super-cooling with respect to hydrate formation). (D) Even before the onset of the hydrate skin effect, a slight decrease of dr/dt with increasing depth was observed.

The purpose of this presentation is to review the history of offshore non- fisheries resource development since World War II, as an introduction to a planned symposium on offshore resources scheduled for the 1996 UMI Conference. After World War II the United States became the leader in offshore oil and gas production, deep ocean drilling technologies, offshore terminals, platforms and production systems, and natural gas recovery and transport. Wartime skills in acoustic profiling and antisubmarine warfare were transferred into commercially important geophysical exploration techniques. The application of ocean drilling and geophysical techniques permitted the recognition and elucidation of plate tectonics patterns, development of seafloor spreading theory, and the transformation of our knowledge of seabed and subseabed strata. After John Mero's studies and recommendations for developing marine manganese nodules in the late 1950's interest in nonfuel minerals grew rapidly. The formation of international deep sea mining consortia in the 1960's was accompanied by a flurry of ocean engineering development, minerals prospecting and associated environmental studies The Santa Barbara Oil Spill of 1969 resulted in a moratorium on both offshore energy and minerals leasing by the Depart- ment Interior, and catalyzed the development of new Federal legislation in 1972. In 1973 the offshore energy moratorium was lifted in response to the Arab oil embargo, and offshore energy activities surged for a time. Mineral exploration problems in the S.W. Pacific are not unique to that region, but a combination of favourable circumstances render it an ideal area to attempt to solve such problems. The land area of the S.W. Pacific island nations is only a fraction of the total sea area they can claim under current International Law. Hence, they have a great need to explore and evaluate their offshore areas. For the past ten years the focus of this work has been CCOP/SOPAC which has individually and jointly with other groups initiated and maintained far reaching marine mineral exploration programmes. In association with CCOP/SOPAC the writer has obtained and analysed approximately 650 sediment samples from the S.W. Pacific region for seventeen elements. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to the data set. The aim has been to identify chemically anomalous sediments reflecting either sea floor mineralisation and/or mineralisation on adjacent land areas.

Deep-sea mining is rapidly approaching the test-mining phase to prepare for commercial mining in multiple oceans, both in areas within and beyond national jurisdiction. The first test-mining operations are likely to focus on seafloor massive sulfides found at active and inactive hydrothermal vents within national jurisdictions – possibly in the coming months. Beyond national jurisdictions, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is developing the regulations to oversee exploitation of polymetallic nodules, massive sulfides and cobalt crusts. The Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) minerals working group has, over the last 3 years, made formal submissions on the regulatory framework, on the draft exploitation regulations, on the article 154 review of ISA and on the initial environmental regulations. In advance of both test and commercial mining, we urgently need to identify and develop comprehensive, ecosystem-based management practices for deep-ocean environments subject to mineral extraction. Transparent criteria for deep-sea institutional and corporate social responsibility also need to be established. Proactive development of management practices, frameworks and policy prior to the onset of mining will facilitate some degree of protection and preservation of the marine environment, whilst enabling the use of seabed mineral resources. The DOSI minerals working group constitutes a broad spectrum of scientific, industry, legal and policy expertise. We provide expert opinion, both in collated and individual response forms, on deep-sea mining related concerns to ISA and national bodies. Our publications and workshops on key concepts raise awareness and provide scientific updates on ecosystems targeted for mining. A chemical and geological study of beach samples from the Mexican North Pacific was undertaken in order to evaluate the chemical composition of the beach sediments and it s association to lithology, climate, topography and weathering. The North Pacific Mexican littoral is characterized by arid weather with wide coastal plains and three geological provinces. The sands from the area are mainly finer, well sorted and show high maturity because of the high wave regime and the high energy conditions produced by the California Current in the coastline. The provenance index reflects that the region has a source of deep seated rocks, now exposed and dissected. Factor analysis made using the chemical composition showed the samples can be differentiated by five factors: 1) SiO2, 2) Al2O3; 3) Cu; 4) Sr and P2O2 and 5) Na content. Samples located in the northof the study area showed the highest values of Fe2O3 (17.72%), TiO2 (2.43%), V (576 ppm) and Zn (141 ppm) associated to methamorphic rocks present in the area.

The International Marine Minerals Society has now come of age! Previously known as the International Marine Mining Society, it was an informal group without officers, by-laws or official status. Despite the lack of formal structure, the Society has cosponsored symposia both in Europe and in North America including the 16th Annual Underwater Mining Institute in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last year. The roster of members is now sufficient to emerge as a fledgling professional society. To this end an ad hoc committee was appointed to prepare by-laws stating the objectives of the Society, provide the procedures for the election of officers and other guidelines essential for the operation of the organization. This paper briefly summarizes the history of the group, the by-laws, together with membership requirements.

The Republic of South Africa ranks among the world leaders in both reserves and production of numerous land-based mineral commodities. Over the last three decades, however, South Africa has also identified several commodities that may exist in commercial quantities in the marine environment. The major targets include 1) placer diamonds; 2) titanium- and zirconium-rich beach sands; 3) sedimentary and concretionary phosphorite and glauconite deposits; 4) manganese nodules; and 5) hydrocarbons. South Africa ranks second in world reserves of diamonds and has potentially enormous sea resources. Diamonds are currently recovered on the Atlantic side from ancient beach gravels in the Northwest Cape Province and from the seabed south of the Orange River to Lamberts Bay. Approximately 100,000 carats (or just 1% of South Africa's total annual production) are produced each year from offshore operations. DeBeers is investing approximately $5 million per year on sea prospecting activities and currently operates three vessels in offshore recovery operations. Diamonds recovered at sea will remain a small percentage of total production because of huge land-based reserves that are mined at a fraction of the cost of seabed operations.
